Agfa Graphics to address opportunities for growth at drupa 2016 At a pre-drupa press conference hosted in its headquarters in Belgium, Agfa Graphics unveiled its plans for the upcoming drupa show in Düsseldorf.

Stefaan Vanhooren

Ag fa Graphics President Stefaan Vanhooren: “Print and print technolog y continue to play a crucial role despite the digitization of our daily lives. Print volumes undoubtedly suffer in particular areas and applications (e.g. newspapers, magazines and some commercial jobs), yet they are still growing in packaging, wide-format and industrial applications, as well as in the emerging economies, generating plenty of business opportunities. And even in mature printing markets and regions, our innovative thinking and solutions enable our customers to always stay ahead. As a leading player with a truly global footprint in the print markets, we invite visitors to drupa with the slogan ‘We Embody Print’, underlining our commitment to both the offset printing and the wide-format printing industry, while also opening doors to new print markets and applications in need of innovative solutions.” At drupa 2016, Agfa Graphics will present an overview of its product portfolio including following new products: ECO3 In the field of offset printing, Agfa Graphics focuses on transforming technology into sustainable solutions that create value for its customers. The environmental impact of these solutions is an important factor, yet Agfa Graphics is taking this one step further by adding total cost of operations and convenience to the equation. ECO3 stands for Ecofriendly, Economic and Extremely Convenient.

“With the introduction of the Azura printing plate in 2004, we pioneered chemistry-free prepress solutions; we are still the industry leader,” explained Joan Vermeersch, Vice President Technology, Marketing & Business Development Prepress. “In the meantime, we also keep improving conventional systems to become more ECO3.” Recent improvements for chemistryfree applications include the Attiro VHS clean-out unit with the N95VCF (violet chemistry-free) printing plates for the newspaper industry, the new Azura TU VLF chemistry-free plates for very large-format offset applications in combination with the new Azura CX150 clean-out unit, and the Azura TE direct-on-press plates, that feature image contrast as well as daylight stability and fast roll-up, and thus offer a tremendous advantage when going on press. For drupa, Agfa Graphics also adds the Avalon N8-90 CtP to its family of

thermal computer-to-plate systems, and the new Energy Elite Eco printing plate. With a best-in-class run length for no-bake positive thermal plates, the latter is both mechanically and chemically compatible with today’s needs in sheetfed and heatset applications. Also new on the booth will be the pallet loader for the high-end, automated Advantage newspaper CtP systems, and the Advantage N Essentials CtP series, which takes computer-to-plate technology for newspaper printers back to its essence while providing equal user-friendliness and reliability. Wide-format solutions All Jeti and Anapurna wide-format solutions are designed in accordance with Agfa Graphics’ “matched components approach”. The Anapurna roll-to-roll and hybrid solutions will be driven by the Asanti workflow at the booth. So will the versatile Jeti Mira with the unique dockable roll-to-roll

Digital Technology

Print the Future with Xeikon at drupa 2016 It’s all about growth with new products and services for labels, packaging and document printing In its first major show since it was acquired by Flint Group, Xeikon has a number of headliners prepared for drupa 2016, Messe Düsseldorf, May 31 to June 10 to be presented in Hall 8a. These include its brandnew Trillium One press based on the technology demonstration of Trillium at drupa 2012 and Fusion, the next big thing in packaging and labels. Flint Group will have a presence in: Hall 3 where it will talk to visitors about its wide range of consumables; Hall 8a where an information hub will highlight the group synergies and Hall 8b with BasysPrint and Thermoflexx where together they will continue the

conversation on the commonalities in prepress. “Our drupa theme is ‘Direct. Dedicated. Digital.’ Visitors to our stand will see that in action, with innovations across the board. This includes workflow efficiencies with our digital front end, the print engines themselves, our unique consumables and our next-generation approach to finishing. Our stand at drupa will have something for everyone in the printing industry, and visitors are guaranteed to go away with new ideas about how they can expand their capabilities to drive profitability,” said Danny Mertens, corporate communications manager, Xeikon. Trillium One: The missing link Since the announcement of its breakthrough Trillium liquid toner technology at drupa 2012, Xeikon has been working to commercialise the first digital press using Trillium technology and will present the brandnew Trillium One four-colour press at drupa 2016. Capable of running at 60 meters (200 feet) per minute at 1200 dpi, with a print width of 500 mm (19.7 inches), it combines cost-effectiveness, high quality and speed for the ultimate

in digital printing performance. Trillium One is the missing link in the industry for high volume direct marketing materials and publishing such as catalogs. Many of these applications will also be demonstrated during the show. “Trillium One adds a new dimension to the world of digital printing that has not previously existed in the marketplace. It has the ability to take digital printing to a new level in terms of price/performance metrics - all features that make the Trillium unique. Also its high resolution imaging heads and toner particle size of less than 2 microns create a winning combination," Mertens commented. Drupa visitors wishing to more deeply explore Trillium technology, can enjoy a Trillium Virtual Reality Experience and take a peek inside the press to better understand its unique characteristics. A Trillium theatre on the booth will also stage five live daily demos. A Liquid Tonnik Xeikon will also present its unrivalled toner capabilities as part of production areas focused on labels, folding cartons

and document & commercial printing. This includes its own-developed Tonnik, a liquid toner developed for Trillium One, that combines all the advantages of dry toner in a liquid format. Tonnik has a lot of potential for future developments, it will become the most sustainable, environmentally friendly and economical colourant for the digital printing industry. Inline Finishing for Labels For labels, the Xeikon CX3, which has seen more than 20 systems installed since its September 2015 launch, will be producing a broad array of applications with inline finishing. Its top speed of 30 m/min (98 ft/min) ensures it is the most productive fivecolour digital label press in its class. The five-colour Xeikon 3500, the flagship of the Xeikon 3000 series,

will show folding carton applications. By using CMYK + Orange toners as an example, packaging converters can extend their colour gamut to be able to achieve more than 72% of Pantone colours. It has a variable width of 250mm (9.8”) up to 516mm (20.3”), runs at a top speed of >1600 B2 sheets/ hour and even produces B2+ format. The production line will include a Web Varnishing Module (WVM) inline for spot and flood coating with UV and aqueous varnishes, a waste separator and a stacker with a capacity of up to 450mm. This delivers a fully functional end-to-end configuration for folding carton printing. Xeikon FDU completes the Folding Carton Suite Xeikon will also be showing its own developed digital die-cutting unit for folding carton applications. This

nearline flatbed unit was developed to enable customers to better complete in short run carton conversion with streamlined and responsive production. “The addition of the Folding DieCut Unit (FDU) demonstrates Xeikon’s commitment to providing complete solutions. Working with our customers, we have seen that there is need for a solution to help speed up production. This unit is ideal for short run, fast turnaround work and helps to eliminate production bottle-necks,” Mertens added. Growth opportunities in the Document market Xeikon’s technology is steeped in innovation for the document market; and at drupa, the Xeikon 9800 will represent the latest developments. It can print on a wide range of untreated substrates ranging from 40gsm to 300gsm at a resolution of 1200x3600 with variable dot density for unmatched quality. Combined with the variable data capabilities of the Xeikon X-800 front-end, this

These include taggant marked spot colour toner. Taggants are microscopic chemical markers that can be added to the substrate or the toner itself, to allow various forms of verification. They are already used for high security documents such as banknotes, identification documents and other valuable paper-based products. Speak to our experts Xeikon’s Services offering will be well represented at the booth, too, with Xeikon experts on hand to share advice on quality, productivity and technology. Xeikon services range from installation, setup and support to a range of Premium Services that includes training and education, colour services and business development training and advice. Xeikon will be promoting the power of its long-established Aura partner program that brings all Xeikon partners together under a

central umbrella. Customers benefit from a transparent overview of all tested and approved total solutions enabled through Xeikon's extensive set of industry partners and rigorous certification process. “Aura gets stronger all the time and underscores the fact that we place great importance on helping our customers develop the most effective and efficient workflow process for their operational needs, whether components are manufactured by Xeikon or trusted partners. By partnering with the industry’s best, we can bring to market solutions that will benefit our customers, giving them the most efficient and effective workflow possible,” said Mertens. He concluded: “We are excited to be bringing so many of our marketleading technologies to drupa 2016 with our new owners, Flint Group. We are even more excited to meet existing and future Xeikon customers at this important industry event. Our expanded presence at drupa reinforces our dedication to showcasing how Xeikon customers can benefit from end-to-end productivity and increased profitability.”

house print environments with much higher volume requirements, has a recommended monthly volume of 80,000 to 400,000 pages and supports a monthly duty cycle of up to 1.2 million letter images. Océ VarioPrint i300 The spotlight at drupa 2016 will be on the upgraded imaging system on the Océ VarioPrint i300 press. As promised, Canon has loaded the inkjet sheetfed press with a range of enhancements and extensions, namely the new ColorGrip option. The feature is an inline paper conditioning step that expands the choice of media, enabling high quality inkjet print on commodity stock, from light to heavy weight, which would otherwise deliver unacceptable print quality. ColorGrip will allow PSPs to print on a wider variety of cost-effective papers, including standard uncoated and offset coated media, and to comfortably manage blended offset, toner and inkjet production without the need for different types of paper and without compromising on quality. Océ ColorStream 6000 Chroma Two lines of the newly launched Océ ColorStream 6000 Chroma, featuring new Chromera ink set, will be on showcase. The Chromera ink set features a high pigment load, which aims to offer outstanding colour fidelity, wider gamut and higher optical

densities. The Chromera will be able to extend the application range of the press to lighter weight media with reduced ink showthrough, and deliver higher quality documents on uncoated or inkjet treated papers. “The introduction of the new ColorStream 6000 Chroma extends the market for our leading continuous feed inkjet printing system to customers requiring higher colour quality. The features we have incorporated into the new model are a direct outcome of our proactive dialogue with customers, whose ideas and feedback we apply to our continuous product development. This latest launch reaffirms Canon’s leading position in continuous feed inkjet technologies for production print, complementing an already extensive line-up of high performance presses for business communications, publishing and commercial print applications,” said Peter Wolff, head of commercial print group, Canon Europe. At drupa 2016, one inline configuration of the ColorStream 6000 will feature a fully automated book production line; the other one will show a multitude of applications in a roll to stack configuration including variable perforation.

Océ ImageStream 2400 The Océ ImageStream 2400, a fullcolour inkjet press for standard offsetcoated papers, will be on demo. The Océ ImageStream range utilises the latest innovations in high-speed inkjet technology at a native resolution of true 1200dpi, and new ink chemistry to enable printing on a wider range of media then previously possible, including coated and uncoated offsetprinting media and lightweight papers. This capability meant that print service providers could mix offset and digital production lines without the need for two different types of paper and without compromising on productivity. The Océ ImageStream 2400 brings this new technology to additional applications requiring a print width of 516mm and an optimum printing speed of 160 metres per minute, resulting in an impressive equivalent of 2,154 A4 pages per minute. Océ ColorWave 910 Visitors to the Canon stand can expect a demo of the Océ ColorWave 910, a high-speed, single-pass colour inkjet printer for large format. The successor to the Océ ColorWave 900 printer is the fastest digital 42-inch wide format color printers on the market, with speeds of up to 10,000 square feet per hour regardless of image complexity, ink coverage or media type. The second generation Océ ColorWave single pass inkjet printers deliver superb functionality and exceptional performance to the high-volume print market.

HP Inc. Expands Commercial Printing Fleet with 8 New Indigo and PageWide Web Presses HP Inc. introduced five HP Indigo digital presses, three HP PageWide Web Presses, and innovative cross-platform enhancements in quality, productivity, versatility and color. Today's announcement broadens print service providers' (PSPs) possibilities for high-value commercial applications to help drive business growth. The HP Indigo 12000 Digital Press, part of the new HP Indigo portfolio

This is due to multiple factors: there were no relevant digital systems available; the requirements of the packaging industry are completely different from those in the traditional printing industry; and the players in the slightly conservative packaging industry have taken a little more time to adopt a digital future than their commercial printing counterparts. But the tide is beginning to turn. A growing numbers of producers and customers are recognising the benefits of digital packaging print and implementing the technology. Without a doubt, one of the "breakthrough moments" was the now legendary Coca-Cola Share-a-Coke campaign. Just a few months following Coke’s innovative approach to placing

names on coke cans, for example, Ferrero followed suit with variable Nutella labels. The market is growing According to the latest forecasts, the volume of the worldwide print market is set to grow to 420 billion euros by 2020 from a current level of around 407 billion – following the significant sharp decline in the years between 2008 and 2010 from 438 billion euros to 407 billion euros. Within the global print market, packaging print is the only area that will grow significantly, with an increase of 3.3% per year, for a share of the overall market of 141 billion euros by the year 2020. This includes folding boxes, labels and flexible packaging. In terms of specific printing processes, flexo printing is projected to see

2.6% growth, and digital printing 8%. Today, only 7% of packaging is printed digitally, but that share is projected to grow significantly. For packaging converters, digital printing can be a logical adjunct to analogue printing and simultaneously allow them to develop new applications. But more on this later. "Just how much digital print technologies will impact production depends on how quickly digital printing presses for the industrial production of packaging are developed. A further – very important – factor is the cost of procurement, maintenance and repair, as well as the cost of the printing inks. In addition, it has not yet been possible to achieve all Pantone colours with digital printing. Printing

The new HP PageWide T240 HD provides customers increased print quality and higher productivity

onto coated papers and the drying that requires also remains a serious challenge. Once these challenges are resolved, digital packaging printing will impact production significantly, even revolutionise it," Hubert Marte, Forum Wellpappe Österreich (Austrian Corrugated Cardboard Forum). It is also worth mentioning that the report The Future of Package Printing to 2019 by Vlad Savinov, Smithers Pira, 2014, anticipates an annual growth of 17% for digital printing. This makes it the fastest growing technology within packaging print, projected to reach a volume of 19 billion U.S. dollars by 2019. Packaging trends The choice for consumers has become considerably greater and brands are anxious to differentiate themselves from competitors to acquire market share. Packaging is playing an increasingly important role in acquiring consumers “at the shelf” when the final buying decision is made. Packaging increasingly must influence consumers and engage all of their senses. Marte comments, "The growing trend toward smaller packaging units, ever stricter safety regulations for packaging and booming online sales will continue to drive growth in the packaging market over the next few years. For this reason, it will become increasingly important that packaging is more environmentally

friendly, recyclable, printed in high quality and intelligent, integrated into the Internet of Things with features like QR codes, more customization and more.” "The packaging market continues to be marked by integration and consolidation. Overcapacity and resultant price wars are the order of the day. Growth in the entire sector really depends on consumer behaviour. Their buying decisions are often driven by complicated graphical and colour representations at the point of sale. This requires a high level of investment in value added processes by packaging converters in order to create packaging that stands out," Eduard Fischer, Managing Director, Schwarzach. The European view The European packaging market is continuing to expand due to growing population and converters are using all available print technologies. "The key market trends we see are ever more products on the shelves and microsegmentation to address a variety of consumer demographics,” reports Francois Martin, responsible for worldwide Marketing Graphic Business Solutions at HP. “For many years, HP has enjoyed double-digit growth in the number of pages printed digitally as a result.” The packaging market – including

the related digital printing solutions – can essentially be divided into four sectors: labels, flexible packaging, folding cartons and corrugated. Each of these areas has its own dynamics and characteristics. The label market was the first to recognise the benefits of digital printing. The other markets are now following suit, but not at the same speed or via the same route. The label market has a 10- to 12-year head start on corrugated in terms of digital printing implementation. Advantages of digital printing for packaging Today's media fragmentation means that consumers are continuously bombarded with information and messages that they virtually ignore as a matter of course. Packaging is certainly one of the last media channels that still attracts consumer attention. But to achieve this, products must stand out on the shelf; and brand owners are responding with ever-faster product cycles and more relevant packaging, which also contributes to smaller lot sizes, shorter production cycle times and more demand for digital printing technologies. What also drives more interest in digital printing are demographic developments, including increasing numbers of single-person households with purchasing behaviours that differ from those of larger families, including

quantities purchased and shopping budget. In addition, households of the 50-plus generation have unique requirements for packaging. Plus consumers are more sensitive cost and environmental issues as well as convenience. For packaging producers, this means handling an increasing number of smaller orders. The turnaround times are becoming shorter as a result, and production planning is becoming more complex. "Digital printing helps companies meet these new challenges and optimise their production as compared to analogue methodologies,” Francois Martin, Marketing Graphic Business Solutions, HP. Stephan Ratt, CEO of the Ratt Pack Group in Austria, agrees. "We currently see growth in minimum order sizes in the non-food sector,” he says. “That means more firms here are entering the fray by acquiring digital printing presses." The world of digital labels HP has now installed more than 1,000 digital presses in the market, and considers that digital printing has become mainstream. Xeikon has well over 300 systems installed, and more than 50% of its sales now come from the packaging industry. Traditional companies such as Heidelberger Druckmaschinen have gone down the digital path via Gallus, and since

Labelexpo 2015 are fully on-board with digital with the Gallus DCS 340. This converting system, developed in a joint project by Heidelberg and Fujifilm, is equipped with the latest generation of inkjet print heads and prints at a quality level that was previously only achievable in offset printing. It delivers high-end UV inkjet print quality with a native resolution of 1200 dpi at a speed of 50 metres per minute, with the flexibility and efficiency of digital printing combined with the benefits of flexo printing. Also unique to this solution, in addition to outstanding print quality, is the integration of inline finishing modules. The Gallus DCS 340 prints digitally from roll to the finished, die-cut label; all in one pass. French company Autajon bought and tested the first system, and has now ordered three further systems. Label print shops increasingly recognise that digital printing can be used as a logical adjunct to the long print runs in flexo or offset printing. Designs can also be changed rapidly. It's almost as if label design is turning into fashion design. Some wine bottles are becoming style icons as a result. And the next digital wave is already on the horizon: flexible packaging, folding cartons and corrugated will also be riding this tide. Flexible packaging The market for flexible packaging is

significant and will continue to develop digitally in the coming 5 years, but it is also subject to social change (primarily due to external mobility). People eat and drink on the move (nomadic mobility). Flexible packs are gaining popularity and increasingly replacing fixed packaging. In the food sector in particular, flexible packs are easy to handle, and they fulfil the current trend for less waste and a smaller carbon footprint. The convenience factor cannot be ignored in this segment, either. Digital printing provides manufacturers of flexible packaging the opportunity to grow their businesses. The formula is a simple one: high quality packaging, produced digitally, with just-in-time delivery. This is why the technology is currently gaining ground, supported by presses such as the HP Indigo 20000 that issued a clear signal to the packaging market with its launch. Swiss firm O. Kleiner KG was the first company in the world to install an Indigo 20000 and specialise in the production of flexible packaging using flexo, gravure and more recently, digital printing. "Digital printing is gaining importance in flexible packaging printing," says CEO Martin Kleiner. "The HP Indigo 20000 introduced a quantum leap in digital production of flexible packaging and opens up many new opportunities for flexible

Digital Technology packaging print with its printing width of 736 millimetres." O. Kleiner KG has leveraged its HP Indigo 20000 to produce small runs as add-ons and to provide new options for customers in the smaller run sector. A good example of this is closures for small jam jars. Whilst flavours such as strawberry are produced in large runs, other flavours such as raspberry have smaller batch sizes. These will in future be produced using digital printing. Further applications include test packages or personalised packaging. Colourful world of folding cartons Digital printing is still relatively new in this market sector within the packaging world, even though there are now several excellent examples of applications here. The folding carton industry tends to use the technology for small and differentiated runs;

print runs before or at the end of large, conventional runs are another application. Digital folding carton printing is currently still considered to be in the early adopter stage; in other words, the users who have recognised the trends and developed the first applications. A good example of this is Peter Sommer from Elanders in Germany who, together with Ritter Sport chocolate, concocted a fascinating project. A special website was set up where consumers were able to order personalised packaging for their Ritter Sport chocolate. This was a venture that really paid off, as customers were willing to pay considerably more for this chocolate. The project also gained recognition from Mediaware in Ireland who implements packaging projects for Microsoft. There are now a growing number of projects of this nature as brand owners recognise the potential

and savy print shops are helping them to realise creative ideas. Packaging made from corrugated To date firms processing corrugated have been slow to adopt digital printing technologies, with the exception of those using flatbed systems (HP Scitex, Durst, Mimaki, swissQprint…). However, this is more due to the fact that until now there had not been many systems available on the market that could be used for corrugated. But this will be changing relatively quickly due to providers such as Bobst or the HP / KBA joint venture, both of which will be exhibiting at drupa 2016. And the large players in the industry very clearly see the advantages of being able to respond to market requirements more quickly and thus being able to offer a higher level of service. The use

The HP Indigo 50000 Digital Press, designed for high-coverage jobs on virtually any type of paper

of digital technology is also helping to optimise workflows and potentially also re-design production sites – following the principle of using the right technology for the right jobs. Digital Colossus in pre-print Following barely two years of development, HP and KBA presented the world's first HP PageWide Web Press T1100S to a group of visitors in Würzburg in November 2015. This gigantic inkjet rotation with a web width of 2.80 metres and with digital pre-printing of the top layer is opening up new options for the flexible production of corrugated packaging in different sizes and run lengths that were not economically feasible before. "Finishers and their customers need to develop both customerappropriate and effective packaging whilst reducing costs," comments Eric Wiesner, General Manager, PageWide Web Press Division at HP. "With the combined expertise of HP and KBA, we have now launched the world's

most productive roll printing press for corrugated. The HP PageWide Web Press T1100S allows finishers in the high-end sector to offer added value by combining pre-print and digital printing in one machine." The first customer for the HP T1100S was DS Smith Packaging. The company was interested because in comparison to standard analogue printing technologies, the system offers considerably greater productivity and flexibility, particularly with small and medium sized runs. Thanks to its high productivity of over 30,000 square meters of printed area per hour, the press can be used cost-effectively for large runs as well. The Brits are clearly taking the project very seriously as they gital technology in the packaging industry. One example of this is Bennty Landa’s nanotechnology that this time will be shown with a complete system for packaging production. It is a fascinating sector that will be stimulated by all of these developments. And

above all… this is a growth market. Good news for the industry! Management/General Bobst (Hall 10) Bobst celebrates its 125th anniversary with a comprehensive repertoire of launches. At drupa, visitors can witness the world premiere of a brand new Mastercut 106 PER. This new model is purported to be the most productive die-cutter available to the industry, due to a range of innovations that aim to set new standards in die-cutting. A new Masterfoil 106 PR hot-foil stamping press that incorporates Foil Unwinder+ is a system that can deliver up to 30% more press productivity and a reduction of up to 50% in foil use will also be introduced.

The Harlequin RIP transforms design and pre-press data into a format that can be printed and feeds those pages to the press. The RIP is compatible with a wide range of PDF design tools and compliant with industry standards. The new version, Harlequin 11, is available in two formats: the Harlequin Host Renderer 11, which powers the Digital Front Ends used in high-volume digital production environments; and, Harlequin MultiRIP 11 for conventional and light digital production printing. On top of that, the software company launched the Harlequin Multi-Level Digital Screening Engine, a new innovation to help single-pass inkjet presses achieve significantly better print quality. The technology is able to vary the amount of ink delivered from the inkjet head in any one location on any type of media to overcome common problems - such as streaking and mottling - that are frustrating many press manufacturers. Datalase (Hall 06) Laser inline digital printing company, Datalase, will be unveiling the new Variprint monochrome technology at drupe 2016. Traditionally seen in product coding and marking applications in only white, clear and black, the Variprint is now able to deliver real time messaging and variable data with a new selection of monochrome colours, specifically blue, green and red. Its patented laser reactive pigments can be incorporated into a coating, or

conventionally printed onto a package. When exposed to a low power CO2 or NIR diode array laser on a packing line, it generates a colour change reaction resulting in a high definition, premium quality digital print. The DataLase technology can be applied on a variety of primary and secondary packaging materials, to enable the laser to print text, and graphics up to 100mm high and 2m/ sec with one laser. The solution enables high-speed printing, which is ideal for in-line customised print. In addition, the system is essentially an inkless print solution removing the requirement for consumables at the point of packing and filling or converter. Datalase most recently announced strengthened partnership with Japanbased SATO Corporation. The two companies joined forces in October 2015 to launch SpeciaLase, which will be responsible for introducing the inline digital printing technology to Japan and the Asia-Pacific region.

To complement the Mastercut and Masterfoil, a new folder-gluer will be launched, which features increased automation, shorter set-up times, lower running costs, easier use, and will allow packaging manufacturers to realize ‘zero fault’ production. A brand new version of the M6 UV flexo press will be unveiled, configured with folding carton production in mind, which will challenge offset printed carton production by offering job changeovers in under a minute thanks to Digital Flexo technology. The seven-color M6 offers cost benefits of purchasing board on reels, allied to the production benefits of the nowater, no-solvent, fast changeover UV Digital Flexo process. On top of that, Bobst will show solutions that offer comparable set-up times to digital, using new low migration UV curable inks and Digital Flexo automation. To round off its drupa 2016 product rollout, Bobst will release a new tooling software for the production of highperformance die-cutting formes, using Bobst branded precision die-board wood, ejection rubber and rules.s

NEW Impremia NS40 Digital printing system based on revolutionary system using nano pigments The Impremia NS40 is a digital printing machine born from a new revolutionary system that uses the Nanographic Printing® process, or Nanography®. This is an innovative system and printing process that employs Landa NanoInk® colorants, a proprietary water-based ink with nanopigment particles that measure tens of nanometers in size. The Nanographic Printing® process begins with the jetting of billions of droplets. However the droplets are not ejected directly onto the substrate. Instead, they are ejected onto a blanket from ink ejectors. As each ink droplet lands on the heated blanket, it spreads and very quickly loses its water, becoming thinner as it does so. When all of its water has been evaporated, the ink becomes an ultrathin, dry polymeric film on the blanket. When pressed into contact with the printing substrate upon transfer, this thin 500 nm layer of ink instantaneously bonds tenaciously to the substrate without penetrating it. The formed images are tough, abrasion resistant, do not need post-drying and leave no residual ink on the blanket.

Can be used with all common commercial substrates (coated and uncoated paper, paperboard, plastic and specialty substrates). NEW KP-Connec State of printing operations made visible via the cloud KP-Connect is a service that improves productivity by allowing the printing company and Komori to share detailed press operating information in the safe environment of the cloud, making printing operations visible in real time. coexistence of everything’ is the green concept that Komori promotes. We will introduce the building of production environments that incorporate this green concept as well as the current state of product development. Web Offset/Chambon Corner Komori developed H-UV-equipped presses to respond to the need to apply H-UV technology to web offset presses and has been working on further printing technology innovation. Since H-UV was announced, more than 600 offset presses equipped with this system have been put into operation around the world (as of December 31, 2015). Now H-UV is a system that now provides powerful support for printers’ business by meeting the need for ultrashort turnaround times and extremely short runs through instant curing and powderless printing that solves the problems inherent to printing with conventional ink. H-UV is now being used for not only sheetfed but also web offset presses, resulting in high performance machines that combine sheetfed print quality that is unaffected by the dryer and the high production capability of web offset. At drupa, they will show printing samples from an H-UV-equipped web offset press and comparison samples from an H-UV-equipped sheetfed and a conventional web offset machine using the same image, allowing visitors to confirm H-UV print quality. Panels showing the in-line presses for packaging manufactured by KomoriChambon and printing samples will also be introduced.

With the enhanced Rapida 145 KBA-Sheetfed will probably be the only exhibitor presenting a high-tech large-format press at drupa. he six-colour press with coater and automated pile logistics on display will be equipped with a raft of new highlights aimed at automating the printing process further and making this even more effective. Its higher maximum speed of 18,000sph (Rapida 164: 16,500sph) and new double-pile delivery are striking features. The first large-format presses with double-pile delivery are already in operation. This option is now also available in medium format for the Rapida 106.

Increased productivity through a wastefree delivery pile The new double-pile delivery contributes to optimising production at packaging companies with high throughput. A waste-free delivery pile which stands next to a smaller pile of waste can be sent straight to a die-cutter or laminating machine to be converted. Productivity is increased as manually sorting through a pile for waste is now no longer necessary. Both piles can be embedded in substrate logistics. Waste can be ejected

at full speed, i.e. at 18,000sph (Rapida 145) and 20,000sph (Rapida 106). What is more, start-up and run-up waste is removed automatically. Further applications are planned in the future. In addition, double-pile delivery makes nonstop pile change at maximum speed safer. Production with two piles is possible in both manual and automatic mode. Automatic paper stretch compensation Colour imposition, dampening and the number of colours influence the substrate and can lead to variations

Sheetfed Offset The traffic light function with QualiTronic ColorControl allows the operator to see at a glance if the density values are within the tolerances As part of PileTronic the new system boasts above-floor assembly and a low installation height. It does away with interfering with the hall floor or a building’s foundations. The piles are transported via LOX bands and servo motors smoothly and precisely to the press. A clear and simple user interface makes operation easier. Plug & Play components are also used.

in print length. Stretching the printing plate along the axis and radius of the cylinder (up to 0.2mm) on Rapida jumbos remotely via the console (ErgoTronic PlateStretch) can compensate for the print length. Manual intervention is not necessary. The result is improved print quality and less waste. Perfect print quality at a glance There have also been advances in inline colour control with QualiTronic ColorControl. Green and red lights show the operator at the ErgoTronic console’s monitor whether the colour densities are within specified tolerances. A sound signals deviations and prompts immediate corrections. A feeder stop can be done to avoid waste if an error cannot be rectified quickly enough. QualiTronic PDF for automatic quality control Another new product to be unveiled at drupa in large format is QualiTronic PDF inline sheet inspection as part of automatic quality control during printing. It compares a freshly printed sheet with the contents of a PDF file from pre-press. After approving the reference sheet, production monitoring creates a virtual reference as soon as the OK sheet counter starts. A camera with a resolution of around 300dpi detects the smallest errors up to 90µm, even at maximum press speed. The inspection parameters can be adjusted during printing. The operator can find

detailed information on possible sheet errors on the ErgoTronic console’s wallscreen. Certificates and reports provide detailed information on the print quality.

The pile turner has an individually controlled programme for preparing the pile. Vibration duration, air supply, pile position or mechanical strain on the substrate can be set according to material. The system extracts the top three to five waste sheets automatically during pile preparation.

QualiTronic PDF Pile View is an additional tool for subsequent error analysis following production or in the case of complaints. The precise control of the entire job eliminates waste and prevents the customer from delivering faulty sheets.

Transparent energy consumption Press performance, the resulting energy consumption and individual components, such as the dryer, can be tracked at the console in real time. KBA LogoTronic Professional logs and stores the energy consumed according to job.

Logistics alternative with higher automation As the market leader in board printing technology, KBA-Sheetfed has a wealth of experience in substrate logistics.

VisuEnergy is KBA’s solution for analysing all energy consumers in a printing house. These can then serve as input variables for a company’s energy management system.

3rd drupa Global Trends Report 2016 Positive economic assessments but challenging times for much of the world. Last year we reported an almost universally positive picture of printers’ own economic con dence, even though the more detailed results did not always support that view. This year the picture is subtler with North America con dent and Europe recovering steadily, but many of the other regions, whilst still positive overall, express signi cantly more caution than last year. Those printers serving the Functional and Packaging markets1 remain very positive for the future, but those serving the Commercial market were cautious and those serving the Publishing market even more so. In other words, for this year’s results we need in part to look past the ‘global all markets’ results and view the results at a more granular regional and market level. But to start back at the beginning, let us remind readers that we asked two broad questions on how positively participants considered the current economic condition of their company and what they think are their prospects for the coming 12 months2. We have described these as the drupa Barometers of economic con dence. 37% of the global panel of printers described their current condition in 2015 as good and 12% said their condition was poor – a positive net balance of 25%. Looking ahead printers were in general more positive with 50% expecting their economic condition to improve in 2016 compared with just 6% expecting it to deteriorate – a positive net balance of 44%. 1. De nitions of markets are given in the brief glossary at the end of the executive summary. 2. Numbers of participants by region and market are given in the Appendix of the full report

In terms of end markets, those serving Packaging and Functional markets have con dence. Those in the Commercial

market have had a tougher 2015 but still look forward to 2016 very positively whilst those in the Publishing market have had a tougher 2015 and are more cautious for 2016. Turning to suppliers, the general picture

was also optimistic with a positive net balance of 49%. Regional results were patchier with current performance marked down for South/ Central America, Africa and the Middle East. Prospects for 2016 were more even

Management/General and surprisingly positive, given what are clearly dif cult conditions in some regions. It must be said that the broader economic summary that follows this executive summary and the more detailed nancial performance measures below should give fresh reasons for caution. The challenge is most clearly visible in the following chart reporting the key nancial measures for printers. Prices and margins continue to fall in most regions and for most printers the solution in the short term at least is to increase utilisation and therefore revenues. But once again we must examine market variations by region to get a fuller picture e.g. the chart below on regional revenues shows a very mixed picture even within markets3. It is the same very mixed picture for prices for both regions and markets. 3. There were insuf cient Functional printer participants for data to be analyzed at a regional level.

en such tough trading conditions across much of the globe, it is surprising to report that employee numbers have crept up with a global positive net balance of 4% – perhaps a re ection of the ever more challenging work mix and the failure of most printers to grasp the opportunity for automation. Like printers, the suppliers reported an almost universal decline in prices and margins (N. America being the clear exception). But all regions except S/C America and Australia/ Oceania were able to report revenue increases. Overall con dence was down on last year, with better pictures for Europe and N. America offset by greater caution for S/C America, Africa, Australia/ Oceania and Asia. In terms of revenue mix, core sales and spares/servicing were strongest and disappointingly training was again weakest. Given the varied economic conditions across the regions it is not surprising that there were striking variations in nancial conditions reported. Two facts emerged globally. First that everyone suffers from poor debtor days and second that printers reported better nancial conditions in general than the suppliers.

Conventional print declines offset by digital print gains This is a remarkably diverse industry in terms of its core print technology. None of the fourteen differing print technologies scored less than a 10% penetration in at least one of the markets. However it is the digital technologies (particularly cutsheet colour + 28%) that dominate in terms of growth in print volume. There is still growth in sheetfed offset, thanks to publishing (net positive balance of +7%) and packaging (+12%). The growth in exo and gravure is from packaging (+18% and +3% respectively) and the growth in screen is in functional (+11%). The trends in the changing production mix of conventional print continue with ever-shorter run lengths and reduced lead times, but some sign of a slow down in the growth of the number of jobs. As for digital print, there is a steady increase in the volume

and value of digital print, with the exception of packaging where only 13% reporting that it represents more than 25% of turnover compared to 35% for commercial, 24% for publishing and 59% for functional. This result is in turn driven by the proportion of digital print that is variable, with 59% of functional printers and 35% of commercial printers reporting that more than 25% of their digital turnover was variable by value. More disappointing to report is that for the second year running there is no signi cant global increase in either the proportion of Web to Print installations (25% 2015, 26% 2016) or in the volume of business being processed through them. N. America as a region and the Functional print market are the clear exceptions.

Fuji Xerox Color 1000i Goes for the Gold The digital press’ capability to print gold and silver combined with a unique marbling technique gave life impactful collaterals. Sha Jumari gets inspired. Closely examining the entry for the point-of-sale category, it is hard to believe that the exquisite sheen of the gold and silver swirls were, in fact, digitally printed - and not a product of foil stamping. Little wonder that this collateral won itself the first prize in its category at the Fuji Xerox Digital Print Design Award. Held in partnership with LASALLE College of the Arts, the competition saw unique design entries produced by students of the Singapore design institution. As part of the competition requirements, students were tasked to design artwork using the Color 1000i press, the industry's first xerographic production press that is able to print gold and silver dry inks through digital printing technology. “The C1000i press has much to offer to today’s printing industry. With the addition of the specialty dry inks, printing professionals can expand creative printing possibilities, which add to marketing effects and improve print value. Professionals can create stunning metallic and ‘foil stamp-like’ effects, without the associated costs of traditional processes such as custom dies and materials,” said Bruce Murphy, marketing manager for production services business, Fuji Xerox Singapore. With the C1000i, jobs that were previously traditionally outsourced for offset gold and silver printing

and foil stamping, such as invitations, certificates and business cards, can now be moved to digital and produced inline. This ultimately results in quicker turnarounds and better cost efficiencies. “The students wanted to showcase Fuji Xerox’s Color C1000i's ability to print vibrant and sharp colors accurately, which was the inspiration behind their decision to work with paper marbling,” said Stanley Lim, lecturer-in-charge for design communication, LASALLE College of the Arts. “The students were really inspired by the visual effect of paper marbling when they were doing their visual research. They felt that the technique was able to showcase the intricate patterns between the interplay of two or more inks. They believed that this could lead to a visually impactful design,” Lim continued. Lim explained further how the marbling effect was created: “They first began by filling an aluminum tray with a small pool of water before mixing the inks with turpentine. For this particular entry, they started with blue and yellow inks for greater contrast. Next, they created the intricate patterns with a stick to 'pull' and 'swirl' the two inks.

This can also be achieved by blowing at the inks with a straw. Once a desired pattern is achieved, a piece of paper is laid across the top of the pool, taking care not to submerge the entire sheet of paper. Once the paper is lifted, the intricate patterns on the surface of the water are transferred onto it.” “They were also inspired by the Color C1000i's gold and silver printing functions, and this led them to tweak the blue and yellow inks that they had experimented with, to represent gold and silver in Photoshop. They were really pleased with the final print result, as the Fuji Xerox Color C1000i was more than capable of printing sharp intricate gold and silver swirls achieved through the paper marbling technique,” said Lim. “For Fuji Xerox, collaborations with young minds are important as we continue to enable and empower them in their areas of interest. In this case, The Fuji Xerox Print Design Award is an important avenue for us to empower the designers of tomorrow by highlighting the role that technology plays, and its potential in the design process that can bring their artwork and projects to life,” said Murphy.

The new Color 1000i Press

Gold & Silver give you infinite creative possibilities Fuji Xerox’s new Color 1000i Press is the industry’s first to offer gold and silver dry ink in a single pass. Built on the market leading Color 1000 Press platform but now with stunning metallic effects that can deliver increased profitability to your business.
