9th drupa Global Trends Executive Summary Last year’s report, the first since the Covid pandemic, was remarkably positive as the ever-resilient print industry bounced back, reporting a more positive condition than in 2019 i.e. before COVID19. The results this year have maintained that momentum, with a further improvement in sentiment for 2023 and very positive expectations for 2024. across the globe, while Packaging continues in its confident fashion. The unexplained dip in confidence for Functional print in 2022 is reversed – probably a result of the small data set.

Globally in 2023, 44% stated their company’s current economic situation was ‘good’, and 12% described it as ‘poor’ while the remaining 44% described it as ‘satisfactory’. The net positive balance being +32% i.e. 44% minus 12%, is the overall result shown as the green column in the chart, 14% better than in 2022. It is this net positive or negative balance that is shown in many of the charts that follow. It is not all good news. Germany was downbeat at +12%, the same as 2022. Yet the Rest of Europe was +34%. North American (N. America) sentiment softened to +50% from the peak last year. However, South/Central America (S/C. America) +24%, Africa +34%, Middle East +52% (small data set) and

Australia/Oceania +56% (small data set) all recovered well from previous lows. Looking ahead, all regions, except Australia/Oceania, expect better performance in 2024, although Germany at just +4% is far more cautious than most. The detailed breakdown of printers and suppliers by market and region is given in the full report’s Appendix. Where data sets are too small to use separately, they are not shown, but are included in the global data. Where small data sets have been shown, attention is drawn to this limitation in both the text and the charts1. Looking at markets, there is a striking recovery in confidence amongst Commercial and Publishing printers

Suppliers were a little more cautious this year than last at 32%, down 2%. N. America, S/C. America and Asia were up, with Europe down 5%. All markets were fairly flat this year, but all showed great confidence for next year, perhaps in part because of drupa 2024! For the second year running, printers raised prices globally; this after seven

years of falling prices. Revenues grew at the fastest rate by far and margins decreased at the slowest rate ever recorded. The pattern was not universal, with Europe and S/C. America reporting a more mixed situation. Suppliers reported a similar upbeat assessment. Commercial pricing is strong, net balance average +57% for the last two years compared with an average of -21% 20132017. Publishing is also an average +57% last two years; average -18% 2013-2017. These figures suggest the beginnings of better times for both market sectors. offset is remarkable with net growth in all markets, even commercial after a number of years of reductions. Flexo grows fast in packaging and Digital toner cutsheet colour is far ahead of all other digital processes in all markets.

25% of the total printer panel reported having web-to-print installations in 2014. The figure for 2023 is still 25%. Some regions have less e-commerce for cultural, technical and other reasons but the figure is flat almost everywhere. Those operating web-to-print enjoyed a surge in demand from that source over the Covid period, but demand has fallen back this year almost to pre-Covid levels. The exception is Packaging where the major growth of 2022 has been largely maintained.

Globally the digital adoption rate – printers claiming more than 25% of turnover in digital – is growing from 26% in 2014 to 29% in 2023. At first sight this is only a modest growth. However, according to various industry sources volumes have grown significantly since 2014, even though the digital adoption Employment numbers amongst printers rate appears to be slowing down. are flat in the developed economies, but show significant growth elsewhere.

The stronger financial performance for the industry as a whole is welcome, as long as it does not crumble under wider inflationary pressures. Every year we ask printers to assess the net print volume by print technology. Chart D shows this year’s results for the main print processes in total and by main market sectors. The resilience of sheetfed

Print Innovation Asia Issue 12 2023

8 Labour shortages are reported by both printers 47% and suppliers 39%. Conventional press operators and finishing staff are hardest to recruit for printers and manufacturing and technical support staff amongst suppliers. Supply chain issues have loomed large for both Printers 63% and Suppliers 73%, although all expect issues to be less next year. Capital expenditure fell back during the pandemic and there was an inevitable lag last year but demand picked up strongly in 2023 with even higher forecasts for next year, drupa 2024! There was the expected sustained demand from Packaging printers, and an encouraging surge from Commercial and Publishing printers, while Functional printers retuned to levels not seen since 2018. As usual, print technology and finishing equipment are the strongest targets by far.

Both printers and suppliers have increasingly relied on diversification to create growth, though the rate of change is slower as trading has returned to more normal patterns post-Covid. Socio-economic issues loom as large as ever over all regions. The risk of economic recession is the top concern 47%, knocking the impact of pandemics into second place 41%. However, beyond

sample has halved since 2014 (from 30% of the total 2014 to 15% in 2023). And the mix of markets they serve has also changed, with fewer in the newspaper, magazine and catalogue markets but more offering varying book printing options. Packaging printers report increasing demand for added value packaging e.g. interactive print. The search for more environmental alternatives to plastic packaging is a major focus for many, particularly for Flexible printers of course. While our sample of Functional printers is small, the shift to inkjet print from screen and toner is clear. In conclusion, the majority of printers and suppliers across the globe have increasing confidence for the future, despite the many market and socio-economic risks and challenges. Prices and revenues are up strongly and the squeeze on margins is less than ever.

Sheetfed offset remains first choice for print technology globally and has been since the first Trends report in 2014. Digital presses take the next two places for popularity, as shown on the table below. There is more variety when analysing the market sectors, signalling the amazing range of products and market conditions that together dictate best investment choices. Capital expenditure amongst suppliers was relatively flat at just +4% net balance. However, all were bullish for 2024 at +24% across all markets, particularly for the Functional market. Building sales channels, raising efficiencies and developing new services are the preferred targets.

the top two issues there were major variations across almost every region. For example, S/C. American printers were concerned about Political instability 52%, African printers highlighted currency issues 51%, Australian printers pointed to environmental issues 33%, Asian printers commented on trade wars 23% and N. American printers worried about standards of living 32%. Opinion is divided between those that think market forces are more important 43% and those who think socio-economic forces 46%. We returned to market specific questions for the first time since 2019. For commercial markets, the key takeaway is the advantages of diversification in both markets served and services offered. The proportion of publishing printers in the

Perhaps the most encouraging news is the clear improvement in confidence amongst Commercial and Publishing printers, who appear to have adapted to the impact of the digital revolution and can plan forward with greater confidence. Meanwhile Packaging printers enjoy sustained demand and Functional printers continue to enjoy an astonishing and ever-growing variety of products and markets served. Capital expenditure has recovered to pre-Covid levels and 2024 is forecast to be a bumper year for investment – good for drupa 2024! Finally let us quote one printer’s confidence in the industry’s future. “We notice that people although prefer to use digital tools, they invest on print products that offer a distinct quality (i.e. fine printing, good binding etc.). This type of printing sector will not extinguish as it offers a sense of uniqueness, a product that you want to feel/touch/keep.” Commercial printer, Greece.

Digital Printing Packaging The global digital printing packaging market size was valued at $20.6 billion in 2021, and is projected to reach $49.9 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 9.1% from 2022 to 2031.

. In comparison to traditional printing, digital printing is a more advanced technique. Flexo and litho processes are examples of traditional printing technology. In contrast to traditional printing, digital printing does not require the replacement of printing plates. As a result, it has a greater printing efficiency and lower machine cost. Digital printing is done with the help of computer equipped with software and printing machine. The digital printing packaging market was hampered during the initial period of lockdown. However the market recovered with ease in restrictions and re-initiation of manufacturing activites. Digital printing produces higher-quality prints than traditional printing. To print all of the colors, only one pass is necessary. Changes may be made even at the last minute before printing thanks to digital printing technology. Because there is no need for water, photo chemicals, or prepress processes, digital printing packaging is considered an environmentally sustainable printing procedure. There is high demand for digital printing packaging market from various industries

such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, and electrical & electronics. Printing on the packaging of the product is an important factor for any company as it attracts more customers to buy their products. The information on the packaging must be clearly visible to the customer so that he can get the correct information about the product. As digital printing technology offers good quality printing on packaging, it is widely used across industries. Many manufacturers use detailed labeling, various packaging technique, recyclable material, and different colors for advertisement of their product. If the quality of packaging is premium, then it indicates that the product must be of high standards, which is very important to create and maintain the brand image. Factors such as variation in the prices of raw material have caused a negative impact on the profitability of the printing industry. And high maintenance cost and requirement of skilled operator are the restraining factors for digital printing packaging market growth.

Furthermore, during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, construction, manufacturing, hotel, and tourism industries were majorly affected. Manufacturing activities were halted or restricted. Construction and transportation activities, along with their supply chains, were hampered on a global level. This led to decline in manufacturing of digital printing packaging as well as their demand in the market, thereby restraining the growth of the digital printing packaging industry. Conversely, industries are gradually resuming their regular manufacturing and

services. This is lead to re-initiation of digital printing packaging companies at their full-scale capacities, which helped the digital printing packaging market to recover by end of 2021. Digital printers provide printing with more efficiency and also give better quality printing compared to the conventional printing method. Therefore, the demand for digital printing packaging is expected to rise during the forecast period. Further, the low operating cost of digital printing attracts many customers, which will drive the digital printing packaging market share.

Food & beverages segment holds the largest share in the market The digital printing packaging market is segmented into Packaging Type, Printing Technology and By End-User Industry. By printing inks, the market is divided into UV-based inks, solvent-based inks, and dye sublimation inks. By printing technology, the market is segmented into inkjet printing, electro photography, magnetography and thermal printing. By packaging type, the market is segmented as folding cartons, corrugated, labels, flexible packaging, and others. By end user, the market is divided into food & beverages, automotive, pharmaceutical, and others. Region wise, the global digital printing packaging market forecast analysis is conducted across North America (the U.S., Canada, and Mexico), Europe (the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific (China, Japan, India, South Korea, and rest of Asia-Pacific), and LAMEA (Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa). On the basis of packaging type, in 2021, the labels segment dominated the digital printing packaging market, in terms of revenue, whereas the flexible packaging

segment is expected to witness growth at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. As per printing technology, in 2021, the inkjet printing segment led the market, and is expected to exhibit highest CAGR in the near future. By end-user industry, the food & beverage segment led the market in 2021, in terms of revenue; however, the others segment is anticipated to register highest CAGR during the forecast period. Region wise, Asia-Pacific garnered the highest revenue in 2021; however, LAMEA is anticipated to register highest CAGR during the forecast period. The major players profiled in the market include DuPont, Eastman Kodak Company, HP Development Company, L.P., Mondi PLC, Multi-Color Corporation (WS Packaging Group Inc), Quad/Graphics Inc., Quantum Print and Packaging Ltd., Traco Manufacturing, Inc., Xeikon N.V. and Xerox Corporation. Training at HEIDELBERG: Digital, international and sustainable Heidelberg offers training that young people enjoy, complete very successfully and which also leads to many of them making a career in the company. On 1 September 2023 alone, around 150 young women and men will start their training or dual study programme at HEIDELBERG. The experience of recent years also shows that 98 per cent of them remain with the company after successfully completing their training and some even receive an award for their training achievements. Training still occupies an important place in the company. "In times when many companies are struggling with a shortage of skilled workers, we at HEIDELBERG focus on good training, which is often the starting point for a career in the company," says HEIDELBERG CEO Dr. Ludwin Monz. In total, the company offers training in fourteen occupational profiles at four different locations in Germany: from the fields of electronics and industrial mechanics, to the highly sought-after specialist IT and warehouse logistics, to the broad field of mechatronics, media technology and materials testing. In addition, there are a large number of dual courses of study in the fields of business administration, technology and IT. The stories of many long-standing employees show that apprentices make their way in the company. For example, Achim Mergenthaler started an apprenticeship as a toolmaker in 1982 and is now head of the company's global manufacturing network. To ensure that such steps are also possible in the future, HEIDELBERG continuously adapts its internal training courses to changing requirements. That is why today's trainees not only learn how to work in the age of digitalisation, but also what role artificial intelligence will play in their professional field in the future. Stations abroad are also possible to strengthen intercultural competence. "We make an attractive and high-quality training offer to young people with

an interest in future topics. We offer junior staff a long-term perspective at HEIDELBERG and in an exciting industry," says Monz. This is also confirmed by the high takeover rate. The following is a compact summary of further aspects of training at HEIDELBERG: Sustainability: HEIDELBERG is part of the "Sustainability Navi" initiative of the employers' association Südwestmetall. One of the aims of this initiative is to firmly anchor the topics of environmental protection and sustainability in the occupational profiles on offer. Energy scouts: In energy-intensive areas, such as the foundry site in Amstetten, HEIDELBERG uses apprentices as energy scouts to detect hidden efficiency potential, develop measures and implement them. They support HEIDELBERG on the path to climate neutrality in 2030. Instagram: Anyone interested in an apprenticeship at HEIDELBERG can gain a first virtual insight on Instagram: Under heidelbergerdruck_azubis, the trainees post self-produced content about their professions. Attracting New Talents - H Artificial Intelligence Opp The global digital printing packaging market size was valued at $20.6 billion in 2021, and is projected to reach $49.9 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 9.1% from 2022 to 2031. Who hasn't heard of artificial intelligence today? The exhibitors at drupa 2024 will certainly use this motto to attract clients. However, it is essential to remember that human intelligence will be needed to manage printing operations, whether it's in the upstream design phase, during production, or for the management and maintenance of production tools. Let's explore together the reasons and modalities of this coexistence. In recent years, and more recently with the advent of the chatGPT robot, artificial intelligence has been increasingly integrated into our professional and personal lives. However, an observation highlights the shortage of human resources needed for the proper functioning of graphic industry companies. The graphic arts professions no longer attract the interest of young people, even though the sector has undergone significant evolution with digitalization and automation. The industry is facing considerable challenges

So, what has happened? Where do we stand today? As we have observed in the various editions of drupa, equipment, processes, and computer tools are constantly evolving, making production tasks increasingly accessible to "humans". Today, it is no longer necessary to be a 100 kg giant to operate an offset press! However, it is important to emphasize that humans remain essential in the implementation of production processes, and fortunately, this is the case. This is evident, particularly in the training provided by suppliers when acquiring new production equipment: owning the tool is not enough; one must also possess the necessary human skills to use it correctly. Furthermore, the qualification of operators, drivers, and managers who use these tools, which increasingly integrate automation, robotics, and assistance systems, requires a high level of skills. Artificial intelligence cannot (yet) function without the human input that enables its proper use.

Artificial intelligence already allows, to a large extent, the synthesis and utilization of vast amounts of data (management, production, etc.) to improve production processes and quality. In this regard, there is no doubt that this will also be evident at drupa 2024. Therefore, it is essential for employees, regardless of their responsibilities within the company, to learn how to question and properly navigate these intelligent tools, knowing what and how to interrogate them, as well as being able to analyze the collected and processed data to derive concrete recommendations. Ultimately, decisions need to be made, which is imperative but not necessarily simple. Indeed, the question of the availability of skills required to use connected artificial intelligence tools arises. In terms of education and training, it is observed that young people are showing less and less interest in careers in the industry in general, including those in the graphic arts and printed communication sectors.

This is not a printing press

AI will be with us everywhere

consolidation under the control of large groups. Consequently, it is other groups of young people who are entering the graphic arts sector, often discovering this industry completely.

What is happening, what has happened? First observation, at the level of companies. A significant change in mindset has occurred over the past twenty years: previously, the majority of printers' children pursued studies that allowed them to continue in the same path as their parents. They were motivated and had a particular interest in these fields. They could be found in schools and training institutes where they acquired the necessary technical and complementary skills. Business was thriving, with high profit margins promising a bright future in the family business. Today, an increasing number of company leaders have more experience in commerce, management, and production management. In the past, it was often technicians who started their activities based on their know-how and passion. Now, as mentioned earlier, given the current context, one needs to be a seasoned manager for the company to be profitable and generate benefits.

Generally, today's printers no longer extol the virtues of their profession to their families. Profit margins have significantly declined since the 2000s, making profitability challenging, and the prospects lean more towards

Second observation, in terms of future employees: The younger generation, Generation Z, has a different vision of the world and work today. Many companies have not yet taken this change in perception into account. To make jobs attractive, companies need to revise their management style, integration methods, and attraction of new employees by adapting to their new demands. These young individuals were born with screens, no longer consider work as a priority, and prioritize factors such as working conditions, well-being, and family. Various studies conducted in different countries all arrive at similar conclusions. Third observation is questioning the level of training programs. Are the

programs offering education in the graphic industries still suitable? Are they adapting to the rapid evolutions in the sector, the jobs of tomorrow (training of trainers and teachers in schools, institutes, universities), the behavioral changes of the new generations (use of digital tools, time management, schedules, etc.), and finally, the question that now emerges clearly: the integration of new Artificial Intelligence tools made available to the general public for the acquisition of necessary knowledge and skills? And today? The challenge is clear. It is about attracting young people and talent so that companies can continue to thrive. Intergraf, through the Print Your Future Awards competition, has been studying this issue for several years in collaboration with partners such as federations, institutions, and professional associations. They have already identified the situation and implemented actions to enhance attractiveness. In France, a recent initiative by a professional association (CCFI) aims to bring together stakeholders from the industry (employer federations, labor unions, suppliers, training providers, press, etc.) to develop a joint action plan to improve recruitment and meet the human resources needs in the sector.

The issue of recruitment and attractiveness of the industry is closely linked to the image of graphic arts professions. The sector is often poorly understood or even unknown to the general public. If you were to ask people with no professional or family ties to the graphic arts industry, you would find a perception of an outdated image—referring to Gutenberg and past centuries—that does not convey career opportunities. Furthermore, this industry under pressure is often associated with topics such as the decline of daily press and print media in general, which contrasts with the growth of digital platforms. Moreover, this industrial sector is seen as polluting and environmentally unfriendly due to the paper production's perceived pollution. The absence of drupa 2020 prevented showcasing ongoing technical and technological innovations that could attract new personnel. In this context, drupa 2024 is a crucial event for all matters related to human resources. drupa provides an exceptional opportunity for printers to exhibit industry transformations and showcase new trends that have taken the industry far from the era of Gutenberg. Having participated in this event multiple times as both a visitor and an exhibitor,

Color automation - soon with AI and everything will change I know that a trip to Düsseldorf is also a fantastic opportunity for young people in training and employees of companies to gain firsthand insight into the state of the graphic arts industry today. It will be a great way to envision the future careers in the sector and, consequently, think about implementing training frameworks to acquire skills in line with the needs of the printed and multimedia graphic communication industry. Industry events should undoubtedly be an opportunity to raise public awareness of the sector through media, press, social media platforms, etc., to showcase the technological level required for producing printed products worldwide. It is essential to emphasize that these professions require skills, knowledge, and will continue to exist in the future, with automation levels at least as advanced as in other industries. It is up to us, stakeholders in the graphic arts industry, to make known that these professions are associated with innovation in various forms, including the integration of AI tools in the production process. We need to promote international events such as drupa and, if done effectively, we will attract future generations of talented individuals.

Investment marks dawn of a new era for Malaysian offset printer Tung Lim Press Successful businesses are often built on consistency. This can involve consistency across processes, supply chains, and the quality of materials used. However, it can also involve building solid relationships with reliable partners. This is a fitting description of BOBST’s long-standing successful partnership with Malaysian offset printer Tung Lim Press Sdn. Bhd. Jeffery Wong, Managing Director of Tung Lim Press and the team Founded in 1982, the company was just three years old when its relationship with BOBST first began. Back then, Tung Lim Press was a three-man band, with a small 1,400 square ft plant. Its purchase of a BOBST SP 900 die-cutter in 1985 was the catalyst for almost four decades of remarkable growth. Today, it is based in an 83,000 square ft factory on the banks of the Damansara River in Shah Alam, a cutting-edge facility that is home to 120 staff and 20 machines. It now has the capacity to produce 6 million units a week for the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and FMCG sectors, a performance that

has seen its turnover grow to RM 25m (around $5.5m) a year. This journey was not without its challenges. Jeffery Wong, Managing Director of Tung Lim Press, has seen the company overcome many problems. “The nature of offset printing means we have had to constantly upgrade our facilities to keep up with market trends. The solutions and expertise provided by BOBST have been invaluable in helping us to continually grow our market share for almost 40 years now,” he said. “Our customers rightly demand the best from us, so when we need to expand our capacity, we also have to look for the best in terms of productivity, register precision, changeover, and costeffectiveness. That search keeps leading us back to BOBST!”

Tung Lim Press Sdn. Bhd Since acquiring its first die-cutter SP 900, the company has added further solutions including a BOBST SP EVOLINE 102E and BOBST MEDIA 100 A2, both in 2002, and BOBST Novacut 106-E in 2020. In 2021, the time was right to grow its capacity even further. With the company forming plans to branch out into corrugated products, the new machine had to be precise, simple and easy to maintain, and very fast. Perhaps most importantly of all, it needed to come with expert customer service that guided and supported Jeffery and his team through the installation period and beyond, to help lay the foundation for Tung Lim Press’s new era. As Jeffery describes it, the choice was easy. “Our continuous growth is down to the trust our customers have in us – they know our level of expertise and the

quality of the technology we use. That means it’s important for us to trust our suppliers, too,” he said. “So, when we needed a new die-cutter that could boost our capacity today and into the future, we knew we could trust BOBST with the job.” The result was yet another BOBST solution installed in the Tung Lim Press plant - a NOVACUT 106-E in 2021 Autoplaten and Ambition 76A2 in 2021 When it was up and running following what Jeffery described as a “user-friendly”

setup, the effect of the new machine was instant, and its impact proved to be longlasting. “NOVACUT has an average production speed of 7,000 sheets per hour and has increased our production output by 35%. We project it will lead to a 10% increase in revenue per year”, he added. “It gives us excellent performance with high production speed and output. With that speed comes increased safety and precision, which helps us keep costs down. And overall throughput is boosted

by the rapid job changeover.” These impressive numbers mean it is hard to bet against Jeffery and his team as they continue to expand into new market sectors while continually raising the bar of their core offset printing business. And one thing that is guaranteed is that BOBST will be there to support them as they grow, with new innovations, expert advice, and round-the-clock customer service.

Indian packaging solution provider switch to sheetfed offset from Koenig & Bauer • Two Rapida 105 presses with equipment for mixed UV operation • Certification for the food and pharmaceuticals branches • Award-winning products The offset division of India’s Printmann Group has invested in new sheetfed offset technology from Koenig & Bauer. Based in Navi Mumbai, the biggest planned city in the world, the company supplies the full spectrum of labels and packaging, for example for pharmaceutical products and for the FMCG and food industries. It was founded in 1987. After working with machinery from other manufacturers for almost 35 years, Printmann installed its first Rapida sheetfed offset press from Koenig & Bauer in 2021. The new relationship began with a Rapida 105 (max. sheet format 740 x 1,050 mm) with seven inking units, coater and extended delivery as a hybrid press for conventional and UV production.

Second press after two years A second press has been installed this year. Again, a Rapida 105, this time with six inking units, and naturally also with a coater and all the necessary equipment for mixed UV production. In this configuration, it likewise offers every possibility for product refinement and finishing. The two medium-format Rapidas boast almost identical features: raised foundations for board production up to 1.2 mm, production speeds of up to 16,000 sheets per hour, two-section extended delivery, non-stop pilechanging facilities for both feeder and delivery, inking unit temperature control, CleanTronic Multi (washing systems for the alternating use of conventional and UV inks), EES (Emission Extraction System), VariDry IR/hot-air/UV dryers and further automation solutions.

High performance and productivity Printmann is one of a significant number of highly efficient and technologically upto-date print and packaging companies on the Indian subcontinent. It possesses certification to ISO 9001:2008 and PS 9000:2011 (pharmaceutical packaging materials). With BRC:IOP accreditation, it also meets a global standard for food packaging. A long list of awards bears witness to Printmann’s quality and performance, including several Label Awards and National Awards for Excellence in Printing (in silver and gold). In this demanding environment, both Rapida 105 presses supply daily proof of their special capabilities.

The erosion of consumer trust for social media platforms and unsolicited, intrusive and scam-based digital marketing has created a unique opportunity for print to swoop in and securely save the day. In this article, learn how discussing print from a “secure sender” position can get your business trending with customers and prospects. Greetings Citizens of the Printerverse! It’s been a wild ride these last few years, to say the least. I am honored to be back as a contributor to this series, and as your drupa 2024 Ambassador. I am also hosting drupa DNA programming in Hall 7 from May 28th to June 7th. More on that later! What I am here to discuss is ‘print’ in an online world. At this point in time, we all live, communicate, learn, market, sell, shop and so on in digital and physical spaces whether they are separate or combined experiences. Print rarely lives in a physical world only silo anymore. Including links of any kind to digital media makes it part of a multi or omnichannel strategy.

Even my one-time use grocery bags have a URL printed on them. I’ve seen others with QR codes.

the disclaimer. No spelling or grammatical errors, correct logo, year and copyright info. I deemed it safe to click. Click.

What has changed significantly over the last few years is digital and social media marketing, and the volume of it coming at us on every device and channel. Driven by the pandemic, electronic communications became the default channel for customer engagement with many brands and businesses. And with that inbox door ajar, the spammers and scammers kicked it wide open.

My MAC opened Safari and then Safari tried to open something that was not my bank’s website. I lurched at my keyboard, gripped my mouse and shut down Safari. My heart was racing… AFTER ALL MY SKILLED DIGITAL DETECTIVE WORK THEY STILL GOT ME!!!

In December of 2022, I received an email from my bank about an update to my account. I put on my forensic detective hat and went through each line of the email to make sure it was real. I checked

I shut down all my programs, opened Norton and clicked on full scan. I learned two important lessons during the hour and a half I watched the Norton wheel spin, waiting to see if any viruses or malware were detected.

Print Innovation Asia Issue 12 2023

Time Machine. Every minute that went by for a useless file to be checked, or 4 copies of the same file stored in multiple places was painful. The second was more of an epiphany. In a semi-hypnotic state from watching the spinning Norton wheel from hell I realized this; Had I received a communication from my bank through my mailbox, I would have SAFELY connected through the URL or QR code provided to get me online. AND, I would have visited that URL and/or scanned the QR code without ANY doubt that the information legitimately came from my bank, and the digital bridge was a secure process. THAT TRUST PUTS PRINT A POWERFUL POSITION I asked ChatGPT to list the largest consumer data breaches and the outcomes. This is some of the information it returned through 2021, only.

The first, I have a serious file hoarding situation on my computer despite having cloud storage, a hard drive backup and

I was personally caught in three of these data breaches. Alarming emails resulted in annoying password changes and luckily nothing else. However, I no longer store my credit card in my apps and when possible, I use Google Pay or PayPal as my preferred method. I then asked ChatGPT what people fear about digital marketing. These were some of the results.

These fears are now part of our collective human experience. They are also part of our collective consumer experience. This is where positioning print as a security device comes in to save the day – as well as marketing budgets and campaign results. People Trust Print – a Credibility Story Several years back I read an article about a man in NY who was trying to navigate the emerging cannabis market and secure his spot in it. Let’s call him Dan. Dan was dealing with piles of paperwork and the time-consuming government bureaucracy associated with his goal of securing a license to open a dispensary. The writer covered all of this, but first diverted a few paragraphs to the business card he received from Dan upon their first meeting. The writer recalled immediately focusing all his attention on the business card handed to him. He wrote about it being extra thick, with embossed type and gold foil stamping around the edges. It was also printed on both sides. He said it was the nicest card he had ever received and looked very expensive. He asked Dan how much he paid for his cards. It was between $5-$8 each as I recall. He only printed a small number of cards that he needed immediately for the interview and a few meetings with banks and lawyers he during the week.

31

Print Innovation Asia Issue 12 2023

32

The writer, taken back by the cost needed to understand why Dan would spend so much money on a business card, so he inquired. Dan responded, “That card transforms me from a drug dealer into a businessman.” Print has authority. Print provides credibility. Print cements reputation. And print doesn’t contain viruses. It can’t be hacked. It is a trustworthy and a secure digital bridge. Enter QR codes. Or rather, the return of them. Driven by the pandemic, QR codes take over the world. They provide a ‘touchless’ experience, and a secure digital bridge to online communications, information, menus, shopping, payments and everything else. Voice-first technology also provides a secure digital bridge when prompts are shared through print. For example, I can ask Alexa/Google/Siri to donate to a charity by saying a specific phrase shared in the communication. This process requires some set-up with Amazon, Google and Apple and IT skills. It hasn’t been democratized yet, but it is coming and when it does there is no going back. In 2023, the sales opportunity for printers and marketers presents itself. Combine the rise of online scammers with the fear of consumers. Resolve that growing problem with the authority of print and by incorporating a secure digital

bridge. Everyone understands this on a personal level now. Print can capitalize on this moment and help businesses and brands create trust through their printed communications. The future? That is the most exciting to me. The Metaverse is coming and the virtual B2B and B2C world needs the entirety of the print world to get their goods and materials into the physical space from the digital space… aka phygital.

There is so much to learn about phygital, about AI, and about new technologies that will disrupt and ignite our industry. These topics and more will be featured at the drupa DNA forum in Hall 7 from May 28 to June 7, 2024. I am honored to co-host this exciting programming with Frank Tueckmantel. We would love to hear from you if you have something new to share with the world whether you are an established company or a start-up. Young entrepreneurs don’t be shy! Reach out to get your moment in the spotlight and take advantage of the global networking that happens in every corner of the Messe.

Upgrade to the Jet Press 750S High Speed Model Based in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Impressed is a respected printing company focusing mainly on the creative industry and regional commercial printing market.

that there was nothing that matched the Jet Press. Despite being a simplex press, its variable data printing functionality makes it incredibly easy to use for both single and double-sided applications and we’ve found it very straightforward to transfer a wide range of jobs from offset.

Founded in 1995, Impressed is currently in the process of merging with Kapsenberg van Waesberge, a print business with an incredibly rich history that dates all the way back to 1590. With 20-30 employees active in the new, combined organisation, the upgrade to the Jet Press 750S High Speed Model stands poised to bolster the team’s capabilities significantly. In 2015, Impressed made its initial investment in the Jet Press 720S, marking its first collaboration with Fujifilm, and its first foray into inkjet. This decision was motivated by the potential to produce high quality, short run print in B2 format, and led to Impressed winning work with new customers, such as creative agencies. In September 2023, the company decided to upgrade their original press and installed the Jet Press 750S High

Speed Model. The upgrade was primarily driven by the increased productivity and performance available with the new model, as well an increase in the price of offset consumables, which is driving the company to print more work digitally. The Jet Press 750S High Speed Model is helping Impressed expand its market reach within the creative sector, broadening its appeal to other organisations, including art galleries and museums, and throughout the sales and installation process, Impressed has found its dealings with Fujifilm to be of a consistently high standard. Bas Gravesteijn, General Manager, Impressed, comments: “We’d had no prior experience with inkjet devices before our initial Jet Press investment in 2015. We explored a range of options back then, including both simplex and duplex machines, and overall we found

It’s brought huge benefits to the business over the past eight years and enabled us to target new customers in new markets. In upgrading now to the Jet Press 750S High Speed Model, our digital print capabilities are going up yet another level, and we’re going to be able to transfer even more work to digital that would have been printed offset in the past. This will be especially valuable for the high end work currently being offset printed for Kapsenberg’s clientele. “We opted to continue our partnership with Fujifilm because we believe there is no other press available on the market today that produces better quality than the Jet Press 750S. It is simply the best, and offers us exactly what we are looking for to continue our growth.” Taro Aoki, Head of Digital Press Solutions, Fujifilm Graphic Communications Europe comments: “We are proud to support Impressed’s commitment to quality and innovation in the printing industry. Their success underscores the capabilities of the Jet Press 750S and reflects our ongoing dedication to delivering top-tier technology and support to our valued customers.”

Mark Shaw, Business Leader, EMEA and APAC at WestRock said: “Innovation and sustainability are the bedrock of WestRock’s operation, and by investing in print technology from HEIDELBERG we are future-proofing our capabilities for our customers. There is no better demonstration of this than the two longest presses in the world being developed specifically for WestRock facilities. As brands continue to drive demand for sustainable, fibre-based packaging, through our continued investment and industry-leading expertise, we are well positioned to meet these needs.” Long custom configurations are a specialty at HEIDELBERG A trend is emerging, particularly in folding carton and label printing, toward customized, long press configurations. After all, manufacturers of branded

goods are keen to create new purchase incentives time after time by offering stand-out, sustainable packaging designed with particularly striking effects. HEIDELBERG specialises in custom configurations of this kind. The Speedmaster XL systems in particular can be adapted in numerous ways to meet customer-specific requirements. “Projects such as the one for WestRock involve particularly high mechanical engineering demands and close consultation with the customer. We combine two things – first-class printing press construction and user-friendly operation,” says Christian Steinmassl, who is in charge of the Packaging segment at HEIDELBERG. The operating concept must be designed in such a way that, even with a press of this length and complexity, staff always have all processes under control via the Prinect Press Center. “As underlined by the fact that packaging printers are more than ready to invest in custom configurations from HEIDELBERG, users trust our company’s expertise and partnership-based approach to finding solutions,” Steinmassl adds. A world record – the longest sheetfed press ever produced, a Speedmaster XL 106 from HEIDELBERG with 20 printing units and a length of 42 meters, is destined for a Polish site of the U.S. packaging manufacturer WestRock. Mastering the Environmental Impact of Graphic Creations Fabrice Peltier – Designer, Eco-design Consultant

The common factor in many graphic creations, especially in packaging design, is that they are usually printed in large quantities to meet consumer demands.

However, amid the focus on reducing packaging material consumption, one crucial aspect seems to have been overlooked: the environmental impact of printing inks. Often deemed insignificant, the inks used in graphic creations play a more substantial role than we might realize, both in terms of their ecological implications and economic considerations.

application. Developed over a decade ago, this innovative technique has been meticulously tested on over 250 consumer product packages in France. The results have been nothing short of remarkable, consistently achieving an average reduction of ink consumption by 20 to 25% while preserving the visual appeal and message impact of the original creations.

of the resulting paper. By minimizing the quantities of ink used in printing, eco-inked papers facilitate the deinking process, reducing the consumption of chemicals and energy required to remove inks from the recycled material. This, in turn, minimizes waste production and contributes to a more sustainable circular economy.

As a passionate advocate for sustainability and ecological responsibility in design, I firmly believe in sharing knowledge and expertise for the collective betterment of our environment. In this spirit, I have chosen to disseminate the eco-inking technique as an "open source" resource through comprehensive guides and training materials. I encourage fellow designers, manufacturers, and businesses to embrace eco-inking and unlock the potential for positive change in our creative industries. Feel free to reach out and while you visit drupa, not only assume new substrates, new machinery and new technologies will help you to reduce the

For brand owners aiming to reduce costs, "eco inking" offers a potential source of savings. Using fewer inks directly impacts expenses, and opting for CMYK - or even CMY - printing can deliver outstanding results at even lower costs and with a reduced environmental impact. The efficiency of the eco-inking approach has been proven by its practical environmental impact of packaging, also consider new ways to conceive and produce packaging. In conclusion, embracing eco-inking is not only a means to enhance the environmental sustainability of graphic creations but also an opportunity for designers to stand as pioneers of change in the ever-evolving landscape of design and consumer consciousness. Together, we can make a meaningful contribution to safeguarding our planet's resources and ensuring a greener, more promising future for generations to come.

drupa – More than a Tradefair – It’s all about Sustainability drupa is more than a fair. Why do I say that? In essence, I haven't come across any other fair that puts in as much effort for the graphic arts industry and achieves as much success. drupa will be the most significant trade fair of the year. A journey that began in 1951, this event has now become the leading trade fair for the graphic arts industry. Even after it closes its doors, it continues to influence the industry. For eleven days, it shapes the industry by unveiling emerging trends and innovations - even those that are set to be released in the coming years only. drupa serves as a platform for industry leaders to witness the latest advancements. But what do you think, awaits us at Messe Düsseldorf eight years after the last physical drupa? The answer to this question is most likely already known today. Yes, drupa is more than a trade fair Because its end doesn't signify the end but rather the beginning of a new four-year process. The organizers consistently nurture the industry until the next edition, employing cross-media strategies, publishing influential articles, and consistently highlighting innovations. Their blog stands as a testament to their commitment. It holds significant importance for us journalists as it serves as a valuable source. We receive numerous noteworthy headlines and updates from the drupa

it, to experience tangible outcomes such as layouts, to smell the ink composition, and to explore substrates by rubbing them between our fingers. For these reasons, we require more than just a screen; physical trade fairs are indispensable.

organizers, which we subsequently share with our readers. drupa also serves as an extensive networking platform that extends across continents, supporting commercial fairs in different geographic regions and facilitating the dissemination of innovations.. Moreover, drupa trade fair provides areas for innovations, trends, seminars, and conferences that are just as important as the exhibition itself. I am expecting drupa 2024 to be a record-breaking event Despite the proliferation of electronic methods, a trade fair remains the ultimate platform for showcasing new technologies. While virtual fairs and virtual demo rooms have become more prevalent nowadays, they fall short in providing the physical experience we need. Understanding often requires physical proximity. That's why we have a desire to see hardware up close, to touch

Therefore, the long interval of eight years heightens our anticipation for drupa 2024. If any edition of drupa is expected to be a sucess, it will be the one taking place in 2024. A survey in Turkey indicactes a strong desire to attend – see table. C

What to expect from drupa 2024? What are the potential problems and expectations of a printing house today? There is a simple answer: productivity, high quality, and high profitability. These three objectives are at the forefront of technology manufacturers today. There is only one gateway that leads to these three goals, and this gateway has three other doors. Ultimately, this multi-door labyrinth guides us towards a single objective. Does it seem complicated? No, it's actually quite simple. The goal is singular, while the paths are many and long. Our expectation from drupa 2024 is for participants to showcase their own paths for every aspect of the printing industry. Digitization, Digitalization and Digital Transformation Explained A blog article was published on drupa blog in September 2022 with the above title. I believe that the article was the best among those published so far. The reason is that although these three concepts share the same denominator (digital), they have three different meanings. In Turkish we use only one word for these three concepts: 'Dijitallesme' (See graph). However, this concept encompasses many industries and processes, which can lead to misunderstandings. Let's clarify this a bit and simplify the paths of the labyrinth I mentioned earlier.

Digital printing and finishing technologies How simple is that? It's just four words, but it carries a vast meaning. For instance, an SRA3-format toner-based machine can do digital printing. Similarly, a desktop printer that prints self-adhesive labels from a 10 cm-wide roll to roll also does digital printing. A 5-meter-wide signage printing machine, a 2-meter-wide corrugated printing press, a 33 cm-wide label printing press, a UV inkjet press that prints in B2 format, an embellishment press that prints in B1 format, a flatbed cutting table, or a laser cutting machine—all of them are digital printing and finishing solutions. But what will a printer (PSP) understand when I say digital printing? The first thing we need to understand at drupa 2024 is this: Customized digital printing technologies have been developed for all printing areas, such as commercial printing, publishing, labels, and packaging. So, make sure to search for these technologies in all halls of drupa, and do not limit yourself to just one hall or the stands of one or two global brands. For example, you can find digital solutions at the stands of conventional printing process companies. You should also visit the stands of digital printing machine manufacturers renowned for producing A4 printers. Because in those stands, you can see machines that compete head-tohead with conventional ones. Therefore, the most important thing that I believe I will see at drupa 2024 is industrial (B2 and B1 format) digital printing and finishing solutions. Digitization of conventional processes This might be one of the most important parts of the labyrinth as it holds great importance in paving the way to achieve efficiency and meet the current expectations. This includes various factors such as the utilization of artificial intelligence and machine learning. All of these aspects fall under the umbrella of Industry 4.0. At drupa 2024, one of the key focal points is to witness this transformation. The desired objectives

can be summarized as follows: • Swift production • Elimination of human errors • Reduced production costs encompassing labor, materials, and waste • Expedited delivery times with minimal downtime • Attainment of the highest quality standards • Ultimately, maximizing Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) Prepress solutions have long been integrated into this process to accomplish these objectives. Elements like PDF-toplate conversion, color management, and soft proofing form part of this workflow. Today, the emphasis lies on ensuring this digital workflow operates throughout the entire production process. Consequently, this is the driving force behind numerous new investments. Hence, the second most significant aspect that I anticipate witnessing at drupa 2024 pertains to the implementation of Industry 4.0 solutions in the printing and post-production phases. A dedicated space for packaging Yes, the third most important thing that I believe I will see at drupa 2024 is packaging solutions. Specifically, cardboard packaging takes the lead as the flagship. This is because almost all major brand owners, governments, and communities are pushing for the creation of international regulations. Brand owners are also establishing specific procurement regulations. These driving forces, along with global agreements such as green pacts, share a single objective: a sustainable world. Although solutions have been developed in many fields today, cardboard packaging provides the easiest path to achieve this goal in the packaging industry. Therefore, the keyword that will emerge at drupa 2024 is "sustainability", which is very much linked to the aforementioned "digital transformation" and paper and cardboard packaging solutions. Cardboard packaging Turkey demonstrates a significant growth in cardboard packaging. According to the Eurostat report, Turkish paper and cardboard industries lead the recycled packaging industry with a share of 85%. According to data from KASAD (Association of Cardboard Packaging Manufacturers), Turkey's cardboard

packaging exports witnessed a 38% increase. However, there was a decline in the last quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023, just like in the rest of the world. Here's some good news: although there is a decrease in quantity, there is an increase in value. This implies that the digitization of processes in cardboard packaging contributes to efficiency and quality. Leading Turkish cardboard packaging manufacturers are aiming for foreign markets and are increasing their exports. Printers are updating their machinery to align with Industry 4.0 for production, so much so in 2022 and the first quarter of 2023, investments were made specifically in highly automated offset printing, totaling 162 units (from only two major German manufacturers). What I mean is that besides the exhibitions at drupa 2024, a must-visit point is also the touchpoint packaging forum In short The automation of conventional processes, digital printing, specifically inkjet technology, and cardboard packaging will take center stage as the shining stars of drupa 2024 in line with the principles of Industry 4.0. Their shared goal will be centered around "Sustainable Printing." (See Table) About the author Akif Tatlısu boasts four decades of experience in the printing industry. experts suspect that the regulations will also be adopted by France’s European neighbours.

Success in Practical Tests of LowMigration MGA Inks on a Koenig & Bauer Press In spring 2023, Koenig & Bauer was one of the parties involved in comprehensive tests of heatset MGA inks at B&K Offsetdruck in Ottersweier. The MGA ink series made by hubergroup was developed specifically for the printing of food packaging. The inks are mineral oil-free and promise especially low migration. There were several reasons behind B&K’s decision to test the new ink series. Entry into a booming market segment Low-migration, mineral oil-free inks are an important prerequisite for heatset printers that are considering ventures into packaging printing – the largest and fastest-growing segment within the print market with an immense product diversity. Generally speaking, most commercial web presses are highly suited for applications in packaging printing thanks to their broad format variability and can be optimised for this area of use with just a few modifications, for example the incorporation of an additional sheeter or rewinder at the delivery. New options also for the existing product portfolio MGA inks are not only interesting in terms of their future market potential. They also offer added value for existing customers. The second-generation family-run print company B&K Offsetdruck in Ottersweier, for example, produces a wide variety of children’s and colouring books. This production

can, in future, be made more sustainable with mineral oil-free MGA inks. “We can create print products that are tailored to the individual wishes of our customers,” says managing director Jörn Kalbhenn.

Positive side effects of MGA inks The testing of MGA inks at B&K also provided a glimpse of what the future holds. A ministerial decree relating to the use of mineral oil-free processes in production for the French print market came into effect on 1 January 2023. The new regulations govern the MOAH/ MOSH content (C16 to C35) in printing inks and specify a reduction of these ink components in two steps between 2023 and 2025. Accordingly, the use of mineral oil-based heatset inks is already subject to certain conditions today, and will be prohibited at the latest by 2025 – on the French market at least. Industry

MGA inks deliver impressive test results The print tests were conducted on a C217 commercial web press made by Koenig & Bauer and involved experts from ink manufacturer hubergroup and from Koenig & Bauer. The first round of testing assessed performance with a coated paper of the kind typically used for disposable food packaging, an application where the ink coverage is commonly high. Over the course of several runs, the press printed at a reduced web speed both with and without an additional MGA UV coating. The tests yielded flawless print products with no discernible set-off or drying problems. A further test run using coated natural paper (90 gsm art paper, glossy) confirmed the results. “The conclusion after this test series is that, at a reduced web speed, the MGA inks perform just like conventional heatset inks and delivered convincing results,” says Georg Zitterbart, who observed the test production as print technology expert for Koenig & Bauer. DIC Builds New Printing Inks Production Facility in Nantong DIC Corporation announced that wholly owned subsidiary Nantong DIC Color Co., Ltd., based in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), has commenced construction of a new printing inks production facility in the southern area of the Nantong Economic and

50 Technological Development Area (NETDA). The new facility is scheduled to begin production in 2025, after which Nantong DIC Color will shutter its existing production facility in NETDA’s northern area. Since its establishment in 2002, Nantong DIC Color has manufactured printing inks, focusing on offset and gravure inks, at its existing production facility, functioning as one of the DIC Group’s principal printing inks production centers in the PRC. In 2021, the company received a request from the city of Nantong to relocate this facility, citing its proximity to the Yangtze River, in line with its environmental protection efforts for the river. After internal discussions, the decision was made to move to a site provided by the city in the southern area of NETDA. Construction began in November 2023. The design concept incorporated throughout DIC Nantong Color’s new production facility emphasizes the streamlining of production processes and ancillary equipment. On the production floor for the facility’s core liquid inks, for example, plans are to incorporate cutting-edge design for raw materials preparation and filling processes, as well as to automate production lines. With the aim of establishing a robust foundation as the PRC’s leading comprehensive printing inks manufacturer, the DIC Group is building a three-pronged production network comprising bases in the eastern, southern and north/northeastern parts of the country. Nantong DIC Color’s new production facility will serve as the production hub of the eastern base. For certain products, the facility will also serve as the mother plant for the entire country.

52 Hunkeler Group with the Müller Martini Group. Müller Martini Holding AG has acquired all of the shares of the Hunkeler Group. With this transaction, the Hunkeler family and Crédit Mutuel Equity have sold off all of their shares to Müller Martini. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. Hunkeler AG and Müller Martini AG are both global market leaders with innovative solutions for post-print paper processing. Both companies focus a significant part of their innovative strength on the economical production of individualized print products within an automated smart factory. Hunkeler and Müller Martini have been very close for many years. The long and successful history began during the 2nd World War, when Hans Müller worked for Hunkeler as a mechanical engineer before setting up his own business in 1946 by establishing the company Hans Müller / Grapha. These good relations have been maintained for decades. The local proximity in the Zofingen region of Switzerland and the already existing and successful partnership in the machine and component business form an ideal starting point for even closer cooperation in the future. By joining forces, both companies see great opportunities to bundle their innovation activities and to serve our global customer base even better in the future through joint sales and service activities. The two owner families have therefore decided on this strategic transaction that led to the acquisition of Hunkeler AG by Müller Martini AG. Bruno Müller: “The graphic arts industry is constantly changing and regularly calls for new innovations. By combining the key components of the two companies, such as personnel, expertise and technology, we will be able to serve our global clientele even better with innovative solutions in the future.” Stefan and Michel Hunkeler: “There is a long-standing partnership between Hunkeler and Müller Martini and a regular exchange. The opportunity for the merger is currently greatly beneficial for both partners and our joint customers, as it will result in considerable advantages in a combined enterprise. This is also a strong commitment for the

Zofingen region.” The following key points are intended to answer the most important questions and serve as a guide for day-to-day business in the coming weeks. The management of Hunkeler AG under the leadership of Daniel Erni will remain responsible for day-to-day business. The name Hunkeler, the Hunkeler products and services as well as the Hunkeler Innovationdays will remain unchanged. Scodix Ultra 6000, powered by SHD Digital Enhancement Press Scodix, a leading provider of digital print solutions for the graphic arts industry, announces the sale of the Scodix Ultra 6000, powered by SHD Digital Enhancement Press to Hudson Printing, a leading and innovative print company – also known as North America’s first certified carbon balanced printer. This acquisition marks the integration of Scodix’s cutting-edge B1 press with Smart High Definition technology into Hudson’s highly sophisticated digital strategy. Renowned for its wide array of printed products, including catalogues, high-end magazines, books, and direct mail, it’s particularly the latter two products that are identified as high-growth markets for Hudson. The addition of Scodix technology will enable striking foil elements to be added to direct mail, which has been shown to boost the impact of direct mail pieces and increase response rates. With printed book sales consistently beating digital now as the world suffers from digital overload, the addition of tactile and decorated books enhances the physical connection between readers and content, offering an engaging reading experience. Scodix’ seamless integration into Hudson’s production workflow is supported by the highly productive B1 format of the digital enhancement press, handling jobs from Hudson’s digital and offset presses alike, before proceeding to the downstream process. Scodix’s support for personalization, variable data workflows, and multiple effects on a single press further enhances the efficiency of Hudson’s printing processes.

Paul Hudson, CEO of Hudson, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We’ve been watching this technology for years, and we knew that it’d be in the future of Hudson Printing. We believed this was an incredibly important capability to add for our customers. “There are other industries, even within our current markets, that are great candidates for Scodix through efficiency, automation, and personalization. Magazine covers and direct mailers, for example, are projects we would have had to send out for finishing before that can now be kept in-house.” Alongside product differentiation, productivity and cost-efficiency, sustainability is a core principle for Scodix. A standard essential to Hudson Printing, which states on its website that “sustainable printing business is savvy business”. Scodix is committed to helping clients such as Hudson reduce waste, conserve energy, and minimize environmental impact through independently verified standards. A recent Lifecycle Assessment study revealed significant environmental benefits, with Scodix reducing water consumption by 80% and cutting emissions and energy usage by 85% during the embellishment process compared to traditional hot-foil stamping methods. Furthermore, Scodix enhanced print holds certification as recyclable, allowing brands and manufacturers using Scodix embellishment under the WMU SBS-E control protocol to display the FTC recycling symbol, as long as the substrate used is also certified as recyclable.
