The solution enables print service providers to reduce job preparation time, automate converting and serve a new business which can only be enabled through digital print, such as variable data. “We are constantly innovating our press portfolio and, as a result our, software solutions that support them, so our customers can maximise their production possibilities,” comments Filip Weymans, Vice President Marketing at Xeikon. “The Xeikon

X-800 6.0 DFE builds on our highly successful and established dedicated Xeikon press software platform that works with open standards and delivers scalable functionality.” Weymans continues: “It will allow all our customers to add value no matter their specialty area. From label and packaging converters to operations with high-volume data throughput requirements, the latest version will help them streamline their workflow, reduce job preparation time for even the most complex work and become more responsive and efficient. “Our X-800 DFE is designed from a digital printing perspective to outperform any other DFE in the market when it comes to the level of automation possible. X-800 6.0 strongly focuses on enhancing operational capabilities, one of which is automated impositioning. Weymans explains: “Streamlining this process can easily help operations save hundreds

of prepress and job preparation hours per year. This alone delivers a clear and measurable value.” To demonstrate the possible business gains for individual operations Xeikon has launched a new initiative called “Workflow Challenge”. Customers can request an online review by simply mailing info@xeikon.com comparing the X-800 6.0 to other workflows. Adds Weymans: “Simply seeing the impact a software solution has on other similar operations does not always make it easy to understand how it will help your business’s performance. With our Workflow Challenge, a much more direct comparison can be made helping define specific goals that will achieve tangible results. We will highlight how job automation reduces job preparation, enables variable data management and supports web to print with laser die cutting.”

New Zealand’s Benefitz installs country’s first Fuji Xerox Iridesse One of the country’s top print, signage, design and web companies, Benefitz, has become one of the first in New Zealand to install the Fuji Xerox Iridesse press. Based on Auckland’s North Shore, Benefitz is one of the country’s top print, signage, design and web companies. Benefitz has a reputation as an early adopter of new technology, so the Iridesse installation comes as no surprise. As a customer of Fuji Xerox for over two decades, Benefitz has consistently counted as one of the first to the market with the manufacturer’s new printing technology. Aidan Bennett, managing director of Benefitz, said, “We are proud to be a Premium Partner of Fuji Xerox New Zealand. The relationship allows us to be at the forefront of technology, ensuring we are providing high quality and innovative solutions for our customers.”

He pointed out that the
Fuji Xerox Iridesse Press offers massive advantages in quality and capability over the technology it has replaced.

Its six colour print engine offers four process colours plus specialty dry ink with offset-like metallic colours. It also has white and clear inks.

“The introduction of the Iridesse Press has seen massive advancements in overall print quality and we are able to offer our customers many new digital print options,” Bennett added. “The ability to print white
is huge, as well as the added ‘special’ metallic colours in addition to clear, and being able to print on up to 400gsm thick card. Our digital team is fizzing about the possibilities.” Benefitz fittingly installed the new machine during the company’s 30th birthday celebration month. “Fuji Xerox is incredibly proud to have had
a business partnership with Benefitz for over 20 years,” said Peter Thomas, managing director of Fuji Xerox New Zealand. "We are also very excited to be delivering our new Iridesse digital press to Benefitz this month. We both believe that this new technology platform will allow Benefitz to enhance its position as one of New Zealand’s premier businesses in its field.” The Iridesse press achieves the quality advancements with its Super EA Eco dry ink. For higher image quality, this new ink has a high viscoelasticity and its particle size has shrunk by 20 per cent. This smaller particle size means greater smoothness and better quality of fine detail with improved dot reproducibility. The toner has a lower melt point and a reduced viscosity which uses less heat, therefore saving power. Thicker substrates will travel through the machine faster. Each toner cartridge can produce more printed pages, so operators can expect

longer times for continuous printing, owing to less replacement frequency. The designers have made the
PC user interface vertical and attached the LCD monitor with a dedicated arm. Monitor options are 38cm to 60cm. The operator can move the monitor’s arm back and forth and around, and also adjust its height. The screen rotates 180 degrees, allowing the operator to check it screen from the back side. The new Iridesse press joins the range of digital solutions at Benefitz, which includes the iGen press. Fuji Xerox Iridesse broadens the possibilities for print Fuji Xerox sees endless possibilities for Benefitz to take advantage of the Iridesse’s capabilities. The machine’s large range of applications can expand the market for printed products. The Iridesse prints six colours at 120 pages per minute on stock rated from 52 to 400gsm. It is able to produce banner sheets of 729mm (two-sided) and 1200mm (one-sided) and it can handle a range of media from plain and coated paper to variations of specialty paper (coloured paper, aluminised paper, films, envelopes, embossed paper, and so on). The paper weight for auto duplexing is 360gsm. It offers CMYK plus two specialty colour stations and a range of specialty dry inks (Gold, Silver, Clear and White), along with metallic effects
with a mixture of gold/silver
and Pantone metallic as well as enhanced finishing

with three-sided trimming and creasing. Users can output multiple special colours in one pass, such as simultaneous printing of gold and silver. The Fuji Xerox Iridesse at a glance: • Six colour print engine • Specialty dry ink realises offset- like metallic colours – Gold, Silver • Also prints White dry ink and Clear dry ink • Resolution 1200x1200dpi using 10bit RIP rendering • Sheet size up to of 729mm or 1200mm • Enables printing on a wide range of stocks, from 52 to 400gsm

CGS launches ORIS X GAMUT The new product enables expanded gamut printing and brilliant images – with software instead of expensive ink CGS introduces ORIS X GAMUT, a fully automated software product for expanded gamut printing on conventional and digital presses. ORIS X GAMUT expands the full colour space and multi-colour ink set of the press. A specific spot colour can be reproduced without the need for a special ink formulation - a feature of definite interest to brand owners and the packaging and label industries. In addition, ORIS X GAMUT increases the colour saturation of images, especially important in the production

of brilliant pictures for photobooks and complex packaging designs, for example. All this is possible through a perfect match of software features and intelligent workflow tools. ORIS X GAMUT extracts the DNA of the spot and CMYK/RGB colours in the print job and translates them into the expanded fixed colour palette (CMYK+n) of the press. Usually this expanded gamut is achieved at press by adding orange, green and violet to the standard process inks (CMYK+OGV).

The process makes use of the included special colour reference tables, i.e. the Pantone colour library or a table created automatically from imported CxF data. The software leads the user through the whole process, from reading in the test chart to output of the final, optimised, print job – all done automatically. ORIS X GAMUT has many advantages, not just to the printer but also the brand owner and end customer. Press set-up and make ready

ONE. FOR ALL. The world‘s leading system for packaging proofs and dummies. Contract proof quality, with native screening. On every stock: film, cardboard, sheet metal, aluminum, sleeves, IML and much more.

19 times are significantly reduced, regular ink changes and the subsequent cleanup time are, for all intents, eliminated – especially important with short run jobs. Press up-time is greatly increased as the fixed ink set means that different print jobs can be combined into a single press run. Expensive special inks are no longer required, are not wasted and inventory costs are reduced. Paper waste is also reduced. All leading to a much more environmentally friendly process. An incredible amount of time and costs are saved in many areas of the print production workflow. ORIS X GAMUT frees up resources for the printer, enabling an increased production capacity. With an increase in production capacity printers can focus more energy on winning new customers.

INDOPLAS, INDOPACK and INDOPRINT 2018 reports record attendance Record attendance up 10% from the last edition with strong international presence, more technology on display, and local visitors all on the rise. 24,918 trade visitors from Indonesia and around the world
 360 exhibitors from 21 countries showcased best-inindustry
solutions
 Well-attended industry seminars and presentations
The Indonesian International Plastics, Packaging and Printing Exhibitions, INDOPLAS, INDOPACK and INDOPRINT, welcomed 24,918 trade visitors from 31 countries, when it closed its door on a highly positive note on 22 September at Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran, Indonesia. This represented a 10 per cent increase over the last edition in 2016. The predominantly local visitors came from diverse industries such as automotive and transportation, building and construction, chemical, food and beverage, graphic arts and printing houses, retail, pharmaceutical and more.
The four-day exhibition that bridges the synergistic industries of plastic, packaging and printing at one central location, provided a one-stop platform serving the entire end-to-end supply chain for local and international companies to promote their businesses. Commenting on the benefits of the colocation of these exhibitions was Aegis Packaging Pte Ltd from indopack: “We were overwhelmed by the response that we received at the exhibition. We managed to gather a number of important leads and also secured several business offers for a more indepth demonstration of our machines.

The quality of visitors, have been very relevant and being located with INDOPLAS, we get to enjoy visitors from both the packaging and plastics industries at the same time,” said Andrew Ong, its business development manager.

As Indonesia continues to build on its solid economic growth due to strong investments and net exports, and a GDP that is projected to exceed US$3.7 trillion by 2030, investor confidence in the country and the Southeast Asian region is on the upward trend.

INDOPLAS, INDOPACK and INDOPRINT 2018 spanned across two halls and over 15,000 sqm, thus cementing its position as Indonesia and the region’s must-attend exhibition; with 360 exhibitors – 65 per cent of which came from overseas including five national pavilions and country groups from Austria, China, Germany, Singapore and Taiwan.

Commenting on the keen and rising interest in Indonesia, Rebecca He, manager at Xiamen Changsu Industrial addedL “We believe that Indonesia is the new power in the packaging industry and indopack certainly showed us that there is a huge potential in the country’s packaging sector.”

Similarly, for Haicheng-based Liaoning Xinda Talc Group, one of China’s large-scale talc enterprises – from mining, R&D to production, their participation at the exhibition has been a huge success. “We managed to meet some serious buyers as well as grow our leads in the Southeast Asian market,” said Ms Christina, International Trade Supervisor. This is the company’s inaugural showcase at INDOPLAS. The strong local visitorship and international exhibitor participation, further demonstrates the relevance of the exhibitions and Indonesia as a destination of choice for many businesses. “This cross-sector platform that brings together the plastics, packaging and printing industries to one central location and to a destination such as Indonesia continues to gain global interest underscored by the busy show floor and successful networking, thus reinforcing its role as a highly-

relevant marketplace,” said Rini Sumardi, managing director, Wahana Kemalaniaga Makmur, PT (WAKENI), and joint organiser (together with Messe Düsseldorf Asia) of the exhibitions. Echoing this sentiment was Andhika Kurniawan Pontoh, marketing manager, PT Epson Indonesia: “Our participation at indoprint 2018 has been very successful as we were able to showcase our new product series to not just the people from Indonesia, but also some from the region.” As one of the region’s leading procurement platforms, INDOPLAS, INDOPACK and INDOPRINT 2018 was also staged against the backdrop of strong economic growth rate and the Indonesian government’s roadmap - Making Indonesia 4.0 that is aimed at building a digital economy and focused on the five key sectors of food and beverage, automotive, textile, electronics and chemicals.

With this, digital technology and automation across the three exhibitions featured strongly with an impressive range of technology and innovations that included energy- efficient machinery, the latest equipment and applications, to new solutions and services across the plastics, packaging, processing and printing sectors. “To the extent that Indonesian middleclass population will double to 141 million by 2020, higher purchasing power will invigorate the consumer goods industry and thus boosting demand for plastics products. Once again, the increase in the line-up of international exhibitors in 2018 testifies that the trio of INDOPLAS, INDOPRINT and INDOPLAS is the most important platform for business opportunities in the region,” said Thomas Franken, deputy director, Global Portfolio Plastics and Rubber, Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. The exhibition also served as a knowledge-exchange platform with its series of content-rich conferences and seminars by local and international associations and organisations. Industry trends, new applications and technologies, and a comprehensive overview of market developments in Indonesia and the region took centre stage through topics that ranged from plastics to zero waste, packaging in the digital economy, print and packaging media technologies to street food and fast food packaging. The next edition of The Indonesian International Plastics, Packaging and Printing Exhibitions, will take place from 2 to 5 September 2020, at Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran, Indonesia.

Virtual and Augmented Reality as Helping Hands in Production Today’s work environments become increasingly digitized and connected thanks to automation, cloud infrastructures, big data and the IoT. But this is not all that industry 4.0 has to offer: More and more virtual and augmented reality applications are entering productions plants. Using virtual and augmented reality applications on printed products such as magazines and packaging is by far nothing new to the printing industry. But these state-of-the-art technologies might also enhance the manufacturing process of such products since they empower employees and machines to work more efficient. This is why these applications match the industry 4.0 mindset perfectly. How the Games Industry Changes Production Today, hardware, software and IT merge increasingly fast and closer supporting staff members to work more efficiently and avoid claims, accidents, or even total breakdowns. The constant optimization of workflows is needed to ensure a profitable business no matter what sector. By means of automation, cloud infrastructures, big data and the Internet of Things, the growing digitization helps with this – just to name a few keywords. This development enables machines to exchange information with other components within the system. Finally, the gained insights allow for more control, efficiency and flexibility. But the shift towards smart factories hasn’t finished yet. More and more companies think outside the box and draw inspiration, for instance, from the games industry. Augmented, virtual and mixed reality have long been standards and also have the potential of taking production processes to the next level. They are, for example, able to create surroundings that don’t exist (yet) or add information to reality. Thereby,

complex technologies become more tangible and workers receive assistance in difficult tasks. We gathered two examples illustrating the added value virtual and augmented reality applications offer: Smartphones and Tablets as CoWorkers Smartphones and tablets increasingly enter production plants thanks to the smart services they provide: inexpensive prototyping or efficient planning processes in logistics. For instance, planning a facility or a warehouse with virtual reality before it’s even built saves time and money. Next to fitting the equipment in their exact future position, it’s possible to test the ergonomic conditions. After all, cutting-edge sensors can virtually mimic how people move in real life. This allows the employees to arrange everything the way it’s most practicable for all of those involved. Troubleshooting From Far Away While virtual reality creates an entire

digital environment, augmented reality is able to put computer-generated data or virtual objects on live images, e.g., when visualizing temperatures. Potential application fields are maintenance services and repair works, respectively. Augmented reality goggles can enable mechanics to see machines that need to be maintained or fixed. For example, signal lights might display the maintenance requirement of certain components. It might even be possible for technicians to share their point of view with a location-independent expert giving instructions on how to repair a specific part. A Science Fiction Workspace All in all it becomes clear that there are many changes ahead for all working in manufacturing companies. Even today, we already use technology which would have been considered as a SciFi scenario just a few decades ago. But although highly intelligent technology is key for progress, it’s obvious that it can’t completely substitute mechatronic know-how.

The Truth and Values o recruitment agency. I have lost count, of the number of times I have held discussions with a candidate who shares with me, their disappointment, in their lack of success in securing the right, new job opportunity, via direct applications to employers. criteria that they are using for selection processes, which you will not know, but your recruiter will. 3. Should, in some cases, know the client well enough to get you to interview stage on the strength of their recommendation. Brief and prepare you for the interview process. Possibly share insights on the company/ interviewer’s style. 4. May have already filled assignments with the employer, and thus have an established relationship, giving you more credibility, over someone coming from a non head-hunter/recruiter source.

Let me share with you some thoughts on the matter. Once you have made a direct application to a company for an advertised opportunity or a speculative introduction for a future opportunity, you immediately alienate yourself from your recruiter. They are no longer entitled to represent/introduce you and ultimately earn themselves a fee from that company! My advice to you, would be to partner with your recruitment agency. Share with the, details of companies you would like to work with. Opportunities you have seen advertised or heard of. Get them on side, and working to secure what you want.

“…you would say that…” I hear you say – well here are my reasons below and why recruitment agencies work hard, to earn their fee and get you, your dream job. Your recruitment agency; 1. Should know you and your capabilities. They will present you professionals. Help shape your CV and application, to be most relevant to each opportunity. 2. Should know the assignment and whether you are a good match. They will prevent you from discrediting yourself by applying for something you would not be considered for. Some employers will not put in writing, some

5. Should know the market rates and the packages that the client provides, and your likely chance of achieving your desired remuneration. 6. Will act as a go between, keeping all parties in harmony together for a successful outcome. Will also assist later with the formalities to obtain visa’s if required etc. 7. Should know their clients well and their future plans and requirements. Many roles are not advertised by clients but are given to recruiters, unofficially or in strict confidence. 8. Should work for a specialist recruitment agency to your industry and be a specialist from your industry themselves. Therefore, knowing how to interpret your value and experience and introduce you to people who want to meet you. Sometimes even creating roles for the right candidate.

Printing Innovation Asia Issue 10 2018

of partnering with your 3. Preferences of where you would like to work. 4. Designation. 5. Industry specialism. 6. Desired salary package.

9. Should keep you well informed of everything that is happening, good news or bad. They should be controlling the whole process on your behalf. 10. Should always be discreet and keep all your details highly confidential and coordinate with you regarding which opportunities you wish to be considered for. This of your head-hunter as your career advisor. They won’t encourage you to work for companies that have high staff turnover or that they have market intelligence, indicating it would not be a good move for you. It’s in their interests to find you and the employer their best match for a long and fruitful relationship together, where its a ‘win

win’ for both parties. After all that’s how recruiters build good reputations. They will partner with you and should gain an understanding of your current points of dissatisfaction and then seek to ensure that your new job, ticks as many of the boxes on your wish list as possible.

You should set up your automatic vacancy alerts and make sure you are following all our company and related pages on social media. In this way, not only do they now have all your current details and preferences, they also have a method of communication with you automatically, just as your dream job arises. Present yourself as the ideal candidate, include all your great skills and experience that will put your application above the competition. Good luck!

So, how do you start the process? Firstly, you should log into your account with your recruitment agencies CRM system and check that all your details are current and up to date. Please include…. 1. The mane of your past and present employers. 2. Correct employment dates.

The emphasis was on “production maintenance” and “full participation”. Beginning with improving equipment management, existing equipment operation is maximized and by avoiding errors in equipment utilization, the business management system continuously increases resulting in a reduction in cost and a boost in overall efficiency. In addition, Carson Xia also discussed daily maintenance and repair techniques, operating procedures and technical principles of the ROLAND 700 printing press. With the help of technical experts, customers were able to clarify the operating principles and technical details. This will allow them to constantly improve and upgrade the

equipment maintenance management level and achieve a substantial increase in production efficiency. Printed materials and green printing. As an advocate of green printing in China, Manroland offers customers a series of high-quality and environmentally-friendly printcom products and magicpix series. According to Maxco Tang, Manager, Manroland Printcom China, only through certified environmentallyfriendly, high-quality printing materials can customers achieve green printing. This will improve their competitiveness and open the door to more business opportunities offered by clients who share their concern for a clean and healthy environment. Overall operating costs are also reduced, resulting in greater profits.

UV/LED curing technology. Alfred Chan, Technical Sales Director of Eltosch Asia, talked about the LED curing solution. The ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION is equipped with an energy-saving UV/LED drying technology option that offers printing companies many benefits: brighter colors on a wide range of substrates, increased productivity, lower costs and an environment-friendly approach. These advantages drive the development of short-run printing. LED technology enables instant curing on paper, synthetic or metallized materials. As this technology eliminates the need for spraying powder, the environmental benefits are significant. The training session also included a special visit to Dongguan Junxing Printing Co., Ltd. Customers experienced first hand how Manroland's printing solutions can help them maintain equipment, optimize production and increase efficiency. Thanks to the active participation of the guests, the training session in Dongguan proved a big success. Digital to support evolution of finishing industry A new Smithers Pira report highlights how postpress will increasingly look to incorporate digital technologies as it adjusts to changing nature of the global print marketplace. Almost all printed material has to be finished and converted into a saleable item. In 2018, post-press equipment is increasingly sophisticated with computer control driving servomotors to automate set-ups. There are in-line integrated single-pass solutions, nearline where finishing is close to the printing machine and the finishing is controlled by the same software, or completely separate off-line solutions.

Market transformation According to the study, in 2018 the global market for new post-press equipment is $4.87 billion. This is a little down from $5.10 billion in 2013

– a reflection of the general slowdown in demand for printed products. The market will rebound slightly across the next five years to reach to $4.90 billion in 2023. This period will see a further decline in demand for finishing platforms in several traditional segments. Mailing equipment and systems is forecast to see the biggest decline, falling by nearly 40% across 2013-2023; sales of post-print equipment for commercial application will fall by 22.2% over the same 10 years. This negative situation will improve to a certain degree by expanded demand for digital print finishing equipment as the boundaries between digital and commercial machinery increasingly merge. Many of the established equipment suppliers are developing machinery suited to the smaller formats and lower run lengths that are associated with toner and particularly inkjet work.

46 Growth is also forecast for finishing systems for packaging and labels as this segment becomes increasingly important to the print industry overall. The segment is worth $2.03 billion in 2018, and is the largest sector and will boost its share over the study period, representing 45.9% of the total in 2023. New challenges According to Smithers Pira, flexibility and connectivity are important in postpress. A few years ago the finishing department of a typical commercial print company would handle a few large jobs. Today, the situation is changing with the rise of web-to-print systems and greater variety of work, where there may have been 10 or 20 smaller digital jobs. Equipment suppliers can capitalise on new opportunities based on the new potential of digital print technologies into finishing systems and adapting to changing print service user demands. Digital enhancement Many print service providers and converters are exploring ways to make print more appealing to consumers with special effects. This business model relies on embellishment techniques driven by digital print technologies. Tactile features The leading area of focus is in enhanced embossing and tactile features. There are many ways that suppliers exploit the physical tactile nature of print. Mechanical embossing to raise parts of a surface is well established, but leveraging inkjet processes is creating new options.

One system available today

Israeli company Scodix has inkjetbased digital embellishment machines that operate by laying down a variable thickness of UV-curable modified acrylic varnishes with silicone-based additives. These are marketed as a lowercost flexible alternative to embossing in commercial print products, often using web-to-print systems; book publishing; photobooks; and folding cartons for higher value segments, like cosmetics. Other systems are being developed, such as MGI’s JETvarnish 3D Evolution, capable of finishing 4,200 B2 sheets per hour. This can give digital and offset printer operators a scalable upgrade path for a full range of production environments and post-press applications. Argos, Komfi Spotmatic, Autobond and Steinemann are also providing enhanced spot varnishing machinery. Metallic effects A parallel development, which can be combined with tactile print, is digital post-press metallic enhancement. This works as an alternative to established cold foiling processes, with inkjet or toner laying down a programmed

Back in 1990

pattern with a cold foil then pressed onto it. Prominent systems in this arena include the Digital Metal platform from Leonhard Kurz, and the iFoil feature on MGI’s JETvarnish machine. Again innovation is coming out of Israel’s Silicon Wadi, in the shape of nano-metallography developed by Landa and being advanced as an option on its Nanography line of presses. Nano-metallography prints a design in UV curing fluid and the silver particles are then transferred from a specialist roller in the Landa machine. Laser cutting Laser cutting is another digital finishing technology that is gaining traction. Laser cutting employs high-powered solid state or CO2 lasers to vaporise material in the beam path. Spot size can be altered and the power can be adjusted to fully cut, kiss-cut or score a paper, film, or board substrate. This eliminates the need for mechanical dies, as the shape is defined digitally. Recent improvements in this technology mean there is less risk of burning and discolouration of the substrate. Furthermore the lasers can also be set to mark the stock to add security features or coding. Suppliers – such as Highcon and Motioncutter – stress the benefits of laser systems in eliminating tools and reducing set-up costs translating into savings in changeover time, labour and waste. The sector that has embraced laser system most readily has been label finishing, followed by packaging and commercial print. Across the next five years it is likely laser cutting will become much more mainstream, with laser units more routinely integrated into printing and converting machinery. =

49 Muir will join EFI’s third quarter earnings call, which is scheduled to take place after market close on October 29, 2018. Agfa launches first preheat-free chemistry-free Violet Plate, Avatar V-ZH Eleven years after the worldwide launch of the first chem-free violet newspaper CtP plate, Agfa Graphics launches Avatar V-ZH, which does not require pre-heating. The plate marks the next milestone in terms of economic and ecological platemaking. Based on its customers’ successful experience with its violet chemfree printing plates Agfa developed a new plate technology that meets the demand of newspaper printers to streamline production processes further and to reduce machine maintenance. The Avatar V-ZH plate requires no pre-heating unit, which reduces printers’ capex and energy consumption, while gaining them floor space. In addition, the decrease of start-up time and waste during make-ready, as well as stability and linearity throughout the entire print run, empower the daily production. Avatar V-ZH has a very high image contrast after clean-out, allowing a visual image inspection to avoid mixups on press. Other features that make the plate a great fit for newspaper printers are its daylight compatibility, high scratch resistance, and outstanding robustness on press (run length, dot gain, press start-up). The plate is flexible, as it can be used with either conventional or UV inks for semicommercial or special applications. Avatar Z-VH is suited for high-quality Arkitex Sublima screening.

Using it with Arkitex OptiInk software will result in a more economical use of ink, higher colour fidelity, and improved make-ready time with less paper waste. Rainer Kirschke, market manager newspapers, Agfa Graphics: “Violetlaser technology makes up the majority of the newspaper market. We have a worldwide base of customers who have been using our violet chem-free plates for more than a decade. During the development of Avatar V-ZH we carefully listened to their remarks, and we made every effort to bring maximum economic and ecological benefits to their production.” Avatar V-ZH works with all violet CtP units currently in use at newspaper print sites across the world. During exposure, the violet-laser diode triggers the polymerization of the image area. Subsequently, the plate is gummed in the clean-out unit with a dedicated gum, which removes the soft, unexposed non-image areas in an easy and clean way. A LED bar close to the drying section takes care of the final curing of the plate. Attiro ZH – state-of-the-art plate clean-out unit Avatar V-ZH chemistry-free printing plates form a very attractive solution combined with the world’s fastest CtP imaging unit Advantage N and the new high-speed clean-out unit Attiro ZH. The latter features groundbreaking cascade technology, which brings an unrivalled wealth of productivity

and sustainability. The Attiro ZH is characterized by minimal gum consumption for maximal clean-out effect. Its extensive bath life results in lower maintenance, while cleaning is easy and fast. A completely flat plate transport means no buckling of plates between rollers. Existing Agfa clean-out units can easily be upgraded to the preheat-free version. “Agfa is strongly investing in new products for the newspaper market, because we believe in the future of printed news. Newspapers face a very difficult decade where every kind of cost saving and process streamlining is crucial. Our ECO³ portfolio combines software, hardware and support that cover every part of a newspaper’s production, from image tuning up to the press run. Like that, newspapers can speed up and streamline their operations and achieve a ‘just-in-time’ workflow,” said Kirschke. Over the last months, Avatar V-ZH proved its stability and robustness as it was put through its paces under a range of challenging printing conditions in real newspaper production environments. These first users reported up to 60% energy saving compared to processors and COUs running with preheat. The plate will make its global debut at the IFRA World Publishing Expo 2018 in October and will be worldwide available early Q4 2018.

The move will also see the company gain access to new customers in the pharmaceutical industry and add mailing system offerings to its offset portfolio. This decision highlights the company’s strategic focus on consistently aligning its portfolio and new business model with the growth segments of digital and packaging. Furthermore, Heidelberg aims to use this extended offering to tap into new customer groups for its entire product portfolio. “The planned takeover of the MBO Group enables us to attain further sustainable and profitable growth by leveraging new technologies and customer segments,” said Rainer Hundsdörfer, CEO of Heidelberg. “By acquiring MBO’s digital portfolio, we are closing a gap for our customers and helping them achieve a smooth industrial process in the digital future. We also expect to see synergies in our own value added chain, which will bring about tangible benefits for customers, too.” The acquired operations account for a sales volume of around €50 million and will see Heidelberg expand its postpress offerings. The acquisition involves, among other things, taking over

the sites in Oppenweiler and Bielefeld, Germany, and the production site in Perifita, Portugal, which employ a total of approximately 450 staff. Besides the German sites, the efficiently structured site in Portugal opens up particularly interesting opportunities for the entire Heidelberg Group. “Even when postpress operations are running efficiently, there is still huge potential for boosting productivity throughout the entire print shop,” said Stephan Plenz, member of the Management Board responsible for Digital Technology. “The takeover is another important step in offering our customers a comprehensive portfolio that generates value and covers everything from technology and consumables right through to service.” Strong MBO brand to be retained The MBO brand is well-established on the market and its technology complements the Heidelberg product range well. Continuing to expand offerings together will optimize the portfolio and supply chain, while leveraging the MBO dealer and service network will also result in mutual benefits. Overall, the acquisition is set to create a better basis for unlocking shared potential for future-focused developments that are geared toward market demands. The planned takeover of the MBO Group is another strategic step for Heidelberg as it seeks to secure its future by pursuing continuous innovation for the benefit of customers. The aim is to increase productivity and

54 These are formulated to address food and beverage packaging and other sensitive applications in which the risk of odour may concern brands and consumers. These sensitive packaging applications include pet food, infant care, toys, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Our customers have high expectations, both when it comes to quality and to rapid delivery One of Europe’s biggest wide format print businesses is reporting a substantial productivity boost, a reduction in delivery times and an increase in quality, since investing in an Inca Digital Onset X platform from Fujifilm in the spring of 2018. The Onset X2, with six colour channels and ¾ automation, installed at the company’s Berlin facility, has made such an impact that the company intends to invest in a second machine early in 2019. With seven sites across the continent, PPS. is one of Europe’s largest wide format printing companies, serving a diverse customer base, which includes retail, agency and exhibition clients and many major global brands. “Our customers have high expectations, both when it comes to quality and to rapid delivery,” says Steffen Hufnagel, Production Director at PPS., Berlin. “We produce a huge range of products for our customers across our multiple sites, including corrugated displays, POS and OOH products, banners, and more. Quality is essential to everything we do and our customers are continually pushing

us to deliver that level of quality to them in shorter and shorter timeframes. “We were looking to upgrade two of our older machines and we carefully examined all of the latest technology on the market. We didn’t just want to visit showrooms either, where manufacturers and suppliers have a degree of control over what you can see. We made sure to talk to real customers who were already using the machines on our shortlist, and it was a visit to an Onset X2 customer in France which convinced us that this was the perfect machine to give us the increase in speed we needed without any sacrifice in quality. “We replaced one of our older machines with an Onset X2 platform in April 2018 and we intend to replace our other existing machine with another Onset X2 platform (also with six colours and ¾ automation) early in 2019. Since installation we’ve noticed that not only are we able to produce repeat jobs for our regular customers

faster, and at higher volumes than we could with our old machine, we’ve actually seen an increase in quality as well. It is already proving itself to be a hugely valuable tool in staying ahead of market trends and evolving customer demands. “The versatility of the Onset X platform has also impressed us” Hufnagel continues. “We’re running a huge number of different substrates through it, both rigid and flexible, creating corrugated displays and a range of signage products. I’m confident that this investment places us in a very strong position to respond to market trends towards shorter runs, faster turnarounds and greater demand for personalisation. Furthermore, the installation process went incredibly smoothly. Fujifilm was very professional throughout the process, they scheduled a timetable and stuck to it, and they had an answer to every question we raised. Since installation, the level of support they’ve provided has continued to be exceptional. “I would have no hesitation in recommending this machine to anyone. I believe it to be the most powerful printer on the market and the combination of speed and quality it offers is unrivalled.” Says Kersten Caspar, Sales Manager, Fujifilm Graphic Systems, Germany: “We’re delighted to have been able to offer PPS. the step up in speed and quality they required to stay ahead of their customer demands and general market trends. We’re delighted they are installing a second Onset platform in the New Year, and we look forward to working with them to get the very best out of their investment.”
