Memjet gets first DuraFlex OEM partner in India Memjet announced that Monotech Systems Ltd has used Memjet’s DuraFlex technology to create the Jetsci ColorAqua hybrid label printing press. Based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu India, Monotech Systems is a developer of printing solutions.

This printing solution gives printers in India an economical way to produce high-quality labels and expand their product offerings. Monotech Systems launched the new printer at Pamex 2020 at the Bombay Exhibition Center in Mumbai. Monotech’s Jetsci ColorAqua hybrid press For more than 20 years, Monotech Systems has been innovating and providing technology solutions to the Indian graphic arts, label and packaging industries. In that time, the company has developed a range of solutions to meet the changing requirements of its customers. These solutions deliver the quality, productivity and positive return on investment customers need to stay ahead in a competitive market. The latest example of this innovation is the Jetsci ColorAqua hybrid label printing press. This low-cost hybrid press enables printers to meet the demands of modern label production. In addition to its economical cost, the

printer produces 1600 x 1600 dpi and runs at speeds of up to 45m/min. Together, these features enable label printers to expand into digital printing and offer services like CMYK full color printing, microtext, variable data and security printing. Jetsci ColorAqua uses Memjet’s DuraFlex’s aqueous pigment inks that are lightfast, water durable and scratch resistant. The hybrid press can print on most general coated and uncoated label stock materials without primers and can also print on many films and substrates by applying primers. “DuraFlex technology has the features and functionality we needed to rapidly develop our latest printer,” said T.P. Jain, managing director, Monotech Systems Limited. “DuraFlex’s modularity, ease of integration, small footprint and affordable cost ensured we could quickly develop the ColorAqua, while the high print quality, speeds and productivity of DuraFlex will make

the printer — and our customers — successful. We are very pleased to launch ColorAqua with Memjet DuraFlex technology and to provide customers with an entry-level digital printer that can scale up very quickly.” A Successful Partnership Released last September, Memjet’s DuraFlex technology is being adopted by OEM partners around the world to power a new breed of printing solutions that are powerful, yet affordable. “Working with a professional company such as Monotech has been a pleasure, and with their leadership in the Indian market for inkjet solutions, we could not have found a better partner to bring our pigmented inkjet technology to the market. We have great expectations for the Indian printing industry, not just limited to labels, and look forward to a long relationship with Monotech,” said Bent Serritslev, senior vice president, business development, APAC at Memjet.

First Landa S10 arrives in Asia Chinese packaging company, ZRP showcased the first Landa S10 press in Asia Pacific. Landa announces that the Chinese packaging giant, Zhongrong Printing Group Co., Ltd. (ZRP), has completed the installation and launched the first Landa S10 Nanographic Printing® Press in Asia Pacific. ZRP will use its Landa press to deliver faster, higher-quality digital colour printing of short to medium-run packaging for its large and prominent customer base of Chinese FMCG businesses. “It fills us with pride to be the first Chinese company to install and operate a Landa S10 press, and to offer the benefits of this technology to our customers. With a strong focus on service innovation, we believe that cutting-edge technologies are key drivers for business growth and differentiation, and early signs suggest that the Landa press will give us that. Our customers now have the ability to order medium-run jobs for the first time, with incredible color vibrancy

and all the logistical and environmental savings that ordering what you want, when you need it, delivers,” said Mr Huang, CEO, ZRP. “We already have a comprehensive offering digital print, offset, gravure, silkscreen and flexo printing processes, but the Landa S10 presents us with a brand-new production capability and customer service that truly complements our other printing formats. In China, colors used in packaging and product branding are very influential in the consumer buying decision. These colors can suggest anything from the nutritional value of the product to the product’s authenticity (not counterfeit). Because of this, we expect Nanography’s vibrant color palette to add significant value to customers, especially in a competitive retail environment,” Huang added. The single-sided B1 (41 in. / 1,050 mm) format Landa S10 Nanographic Printing® Press enables just-in-

time mainstream efficiency for the production of folding carton and POP/POS applications. With a higher throughput than any other digital sheetfed press in the industry, the Landa S10 prints 6,500 large format sheets per hour on off-the-shelf substrates in thickness from 2.4-32 pt. (60-800μm). Yishai Amir, Landa CEO commented: “We’ve spent the last six months putting all the necessary service and support functions in place to serve customers in China, which also includes the opening of a local Landa office. With that done, ZRP has been the perfect partner to launch Nanography in Asia Pacific. Being a packaging expert and one of the country’s ‘Top 100’ leading industry suppliers, the company not only understands the opportunities that the Landa S10 delivers, but they also know how to take Nanography to market and drive its rapid adoption. We look forward to supporting ZRP and other customers in this thriving region, in the near future.”

The Kornit Digital Over the past year, Kornit Digital has been making waves in the digital textile printing market in Asia. We sat with Andy Yarrow, Kornit Digital’s president for Asia Pacific, to get updated on the company’s progress in Asia, strategy in 2020 and the sustainability movement. By Sha Jumari The textile printing industry has been going through a transformation to adopt new technologies in order to adapt to current generations of consumers and supply chains. While textile printing is a mature market, digital textile printing takes up just 5% of the global pie. According to a Smithers Pira report, the market value of digital textile printing is expected to grow to USD$4.90 billion in 2023 at a CAGR of 11.6%. At the forefront of this digital movement is Kornit Digital. The company offers industrial solutions to revolutionise the supply chain, primarily in direct-to-garment (DTG), but also direct-to-fabric (DTF), which are roll-to-roll systems. It supplies its inkjet machines across 100 countries addressing the needs of designers, manufacturers and vendors across the textile printing value chain. Headquartered in Israel and only public since 2015, the company is considered the new kid on the digital textile printing block. Today it is one of the very few companies that are dedicated to mass production, high volume industrial textile printing. “In general, it was an amazing year of growth for Asia. In terms of our business, we make up some 12-14% in the global numbers, and it’s growing year-on-year. We grew the business significantly in all areas. We have our printers, ink revenue, and then service. Ink revenue will give you a good

impression on how we're growing and how our customers are growing as a business,” said Andy Yarrow, president of Kornit Asia Pacific. The company sold four Atlas machines, which it launched in January 2019. Utilising Kornit’s HD technology, the Atlas is a DT Yarrow added that the challenges to grow in the region vary market to market. Much like in other industries, its challenges include copycat technologies and price consciousness. “We’re number one in the industrial space for DTG, and growing quickly in roll to roll with the introduction of Presto last year at ITMA, and people like to try and copy our technology, but the unique advantage for us is our “wet on wet process” which is a combination of our pigment inks and fixation,” said Yarrow. “We also have customers who might want to spend an entry level machine from our competitors and build up their fleet that way. Instead of having one industrial machine, they might have five or six smaller platforms, but even these customers are seeing the productivity benefits of the Kornit systems, and the added benefit of lower ink costs with our HD technology.” Kornit primarily works through channel partners, supported by Kornit sales and technical professionals. “We need to make sure we have the right partners across the region. We

Takeover The Sustainability Movement Although e-commerce continues to be a key driver for the digital textile industry, another vital trend is the rising awareness to sustainability. “The direction the textile industry is headed to is digital. The industry understands the challenges of the sustainability message. People are becoming more activist and after seeing the waste from textile and fashion industries, it gives them a real cause to go after. I think what our message is saying to the market is that we understand these challenges. The most sustainable thing to wear is nothing, the next best thing is Kornit,” said Yarrow.

are pretty much 100% channel, so it’s important to make sure we have the right partners in the field that have the same values as our business and are able to talk to their customers that way,” said Yarrow.

“We also have to make sure to target the right customers, so going to the big players who have connection with the brands is key. It’s to make sure we’re connecting with the right people and that they connect with what we’re saying as a business, for example with our sustainability message.”

Presto

Sustainable printing approaches make up the core of Kornit’s company values. The entire print process with a Kornit machine is designed with environmental protection in mind, from non-hazardous water-based inks to energy-efficient equipment and raw materials to finished products. “I think what people are seeing in terms of Kornit’s message is the real synergy with where brands are looking to go. Being more sustainable, not creating more waste, and just-in-time manufacturing. And that’s where we’ve been making a big name for ourselves in the past 12 months,” said Yarrow. “A lot of our business comes from brands telling their factories what to produce the product on. In the next months, there’s going to be a real focus by brands on sustainability. We’re in discussions with brands to make serious investments in Asia, who are talking to us about sustainability,” Yarrow explained. According to Yarrow, the brand targeting stems from Kornit’s headquarters, where a team of people

are working and speaking with major brands: “You can imagine every single textile brand that has a message on sustainability is talking to Kornit. We don’t have the same challenges with waste and pollutants that you get with the older technologies, such as with acid and reactive inks. The message is in sustainability, when people hear our message and our unique value proposition around our pigments.” In January 2020, Kornit’s stock price spiked up to 20%. Yarrow attributed this to the resonating of Kornit’s sustainability message amongst brands and people in the market. Lean, Green Machines

Kornit utilises its proprietary waterbased NeoPigment inks that are free of heavy metals, formaldehyde and Alkylphenol Ethoxylates (APE), making them non-hazardous, nontoxic and biodegradable.

take a roll of material whether it’s silk, polyester or cotton and then giving it inline fixation, which means we don’t have to pretreat it, wash or steam it or anything like that afterwards is a huge advantage,” said Yarrow.

To further reduce environmental impact, Kornit’s technologies implement a 100% waterless process in its printing systems. This eliminates external processes such as pretreatments, steaming or washing. For example, the Kornit Presto is a onestep process of printing on fabric. “The fact that we can print on any material this is certainly key in the rollto-roll space, what we call the DTF or direct-to-fabric space. Being able to

The same rings true for the DTG systems: “We load the shirt, spray down the fixation, we lay down the inks, and then dry. No one else does this. Usually you have to pre-treat, wash or sream it. And that’s really the big difference between us and competition. The process, the flexibility, and the ability to print on multiple fabrics.”

Vulcan Plus

From 21 to 24 April, Kornit will be organising a huge innovation event at its headquarters in Israel where they will be sharing trends that are happening and the direction digital textiles will be headed from a global perspective to customers. When asked about his favourite product in the Kornit portfolio: “I can’t pick one, they’re all my children!” quipped Yarrow. “But the Presto gives us the greatest opportunity. We’re using the Presto as a platform so it enables us to to bring in different inks and different chemistry, things like that to help cater to different parts of the industry. The Presto this year will be a major focus for us to get into the fashion space and we’re already in talks with some of the major brands in the market about investing in Presto. This is the year of the Presto, for sure.”

Kanyarat Taechasukij, general manager, Me Class Co. Ltd Thailand.

Me Class Installs First Colorado 1650 in Thailand Canon announced that its first Colorado 1650 in Thailand goes to Me Class Co., Ltd. The Colorado 1650 printer had made its debut at Pack Print International 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand. At the conclusion of the show, Canon unveiled that it had sold three of the machines, one of which was to Me Class. Based in Bangkok, Me Class is a company that specialises in wall coverings, floorings, curtains and blinds. “A couple of months ago, we attended the Pack Print exhibition in Bangkok, and was introduced to a new digital printing system by the Canon team. We found that this is another machine we couldn't miss!” said Kanyarat Taechasukij, general manager, Me Class Co. Ltd. The Colorado 1650 printer is aimed at print service providers (PSPs) that are producing high volumes of large format

applications, such as self-adhesive vinyls, wall coverings, canvasses, soft signage and vehicle graphics.

on wallpaper, to more feature walls with limitless imagination!” added Taechasukij.

“We have foreseen that wall covering demand has shifted to become more customized. We see the trend change from conventional repeated patterns

“This Colorado 1650 has a new technology and was an upgrade from its predecessor, the Colorado 1640. We foresee that this machine can serve

Printing Innovation Asia Issue 1 2020

15 our customer’s requirements and is very suitable with our wall covering business,” said Taechasukij. “With UVgel ink technology, we are able to offer variety of application to our customers. For example, customers can opt for a matt or glossy look.” The Colorado 1650 incorporates Canon’s FLXfinish technology, a new approach to LED curing which allows the user to choose between matte or gloss modes for each individual print. The game changing feature allows for matte or gloss outputs without having to change inks or paper. This feature allows PSPs to easily achieve different aesthetic finishes at the push of a button. “We are also impressed with the high speed productivity, lower ink consumption, low operating cost, and easy maintenance as it has an automated system support. The reasonable operation cost additionally allows pricing to be very competitive in the market. Besides that, we are not limited to printing only on wallpaper, but also other media such as films, canvas, stickers etc.,” Taechasukij continued.

With Colorado 1650, Me Class will be able to explore opportunities in premium POS and décor without switching media or inks. A gloss finish gives visual impact to applications such as banners and posters, while a matte appearance is particularly appealing for high quality indoor applications viewed in artificial light, such as wall coverings or premium instore POS materials.

According to Taechasukij, another reason the Colorado 1650 stood out was its new technology of UVgel, as it has no smell and is environmentally friendly. The Colorado 1650 works with a new version of Canon UVgel ink that has achieved the highest level of GREENGUARD Gold Certification by the UL Environment, a worldwide safety and certification company.

"In a diversifying market, printers need the flexibility to let their imaginations run wild. With the Colorado 1650, there are seemingly no limits – indoors or outdoor. We are very pleased to be able to offer that increased flexibility with the added value of the FLXfinish for customers who can benefit from a matte finish as well as the consistency of color and dimension in the print,” said Steve Ford, Managing Director, Production Printing Asia, Canon Singapore.

The Canon UVgel is designed for maximum flexibility by increasing the ‘stretchability’ of each cured ink droplet. This results in output optimal for applications that require cutting, bending, creasing and folding without risk of cracking, such as in soft signage. Me Class already has a Canon machine in its arsenal – the Arizona 2280 digital printer. It invested in the machine last year, together with Muraspec UK after the printer showed a very successful track record in the UK. The Arizona machine is a hybrid which can be used as a flatbed and roll-to-roll.

“The Colorado 1650 has successfully filled the gap performance wise between current technologies in the roll-toroll production market. Our satisfied customers are reaping the benefits of these highly efficient production units to help further grow their businesses.”

“We selected the UV series as it has many advantages over other inks including odourless, Greenguard and other EU-certified inks,” said Taechasukij. “We used the Arizona

Printing Innovation Asia Issue 1 2020

16 for printing premium quality products which served the interior and designer markets. The Arizona can create a magnificent printing technique as it can print on any rigid media with up to 5 cm thickness.” “After installing the Arizona, we were looking for a second machine. The most important factor for us is not only the machine capacity, but also capability. We appreciated the best support from the Canon Thailand team, they are fantastic!” “We are also very confident in the Canon brand and technology. There is very good support and after sales service from the Canon team in Thailand, especially from K, Nattapon and the K. Charoen team. The Canon team here treats us as their business partner, not just as a customer.” “We’re thrilled that Me Class has decided to add the Colorado 1650 to its existing line up enabling them to unlock new business opportunities in premium interior POS and décor. We’re excited to continue to build on this partnership and help drive Me Class’s business forward,” said Nattaphol Rungsomboon, Head of Sales & Marketing for Production Printing Products at Canon Marketing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. “The wallpaper business was started by my father in 1990. He had a factory located in the northern part of Bangkok, in Navanakorn Industrial Estate,” said Taechasukij. “The factory was operating for more than 10 years but with much difficulty. Due to this, he decided to close the factory, and focus on the import business instead.” Today, Me Class has around 50 staff, including sales and back office. Its clients can be segmented into three categories; dealers, modern trade and DIY store partners, and the commercial market which include interior firms and developers. The hospitality, education, government and mixed use industries also fall into this category.

Beyond Printing – Auto to increase productivit Konica Minolta introduces AccurioPro Flux, a tool for workflow automation. Managing print workflows has always been the fundamental yet underrated part of a print process. As we embrace the age of Internet of Things (IoT), automation software is becoming a much sought-after tool to incorporate in the print room. Allowing machines and software to take care of print and infrastructure processes has revealed multiple benefits, including cutting down time spent by operators in prepress, streamlining the print process, overall cost effectiveness

and significantly decreasing production and turnaround time. It can also detect processing errors, and eventually improve the quality of print. By now, we know this much – we could all use a print management solution. However, choosing a suitable print management software is not the most straightforward decision. There are plenty of solutions out in the market, but there are limitations.

With existing workflow solutions in the market, users likely have to purchase multiple third party tools to service the entire print process. For example, MIS integration would require a different software to a web store. Most workflow software also does not link operators directly to different machines, so users are not able to maximize the use of all printers in the work room. Pre-flight checks tend to take up a large amount of the operator’s time, and most print shops do not have an interface for customers to submit their print jobs through a web platform.

and in-house print shops of schools, companies and public organisations. Konica Minolta has developed the technology to enable the customer to automate and streamline operations, expand print service offerings, and meet requests for quick turnarounds on high-quality digital prints.

The Flexible Automation Software series – AccurioPro Flux To combat these issues, Konica Minolta introduces AccurioPro Flux, a series of workflow solution software that targets CRDs, print service providers (PSPs),

There are three modules of the AccurioPro Flux; the Essential module contains all a print room needs for prepress and makeready management, Premium includes a server to enable collaboration between clients and the

print team, and the Ultimate version adds a web-to-print function. AccurioPro Flux increases productivity in several ways. At its core, the series of software aims to provide users with a more efficient prepress workflow by automating recurring tasks. The software utilises load balancing to minimise the manual labour required to conventionally sync colour and mono printouts. Load balancing means that users can maximize the use of different printers to achieve greater efficiency by distributing the load intelligently

fonts, images with low resolution and transparencies. The integration of third party devices meant that the user can centrally control all machines in the print room – including machines from other manufacturers.

A key differentiator of Flux is that it enables third party integration and centralized control of production printers on the print floor. This meant that Flux can seamlessly communicate with different brands of printers and allow users to increase utilization of lose machines. Flux will enable users to leverage different printer capabilities to maximize output on the print floor.

AccurioPro Flux Premium – Automation and Collaboration On top of offering the features as the Essential module, the AccurioPro Flux Premium offers a server designed for even greater automation and collaboration. Users will be able to work from anywhere with the Premium app, whether from a PC, Mac, or even a mobile device. Users will also be able to process print jobs assigned to the machine directly on the printer via the Flux Panel, be it checking, previewing or editing the jobs. Besides just detecting printing errors, the flux server can link with 3rd party system such as ERP and MIS for a more streamline process.

AccurioPro Flux Essential – Prepress and Output The AccurioPro Flux Essential is the entry level product of the print automation software series. This module offers tools for efficient prepress processes, namely in the automation of recurring tasks and centralized control of all production machines. Within the software, there is a ready-to-use make-ready tool so that users don't have to switch to a separate app to do some editing. The software is able to do a basic preflight check, detecting printing problems due to incorrect PDF files, missing

Premium’s server inclusion facilitates collaboration amongst members of a team, as every operator can have a personal account and different operators can work at different workstations simultaneously. This module also allows users to link the Flux server and their B2C online print shop via open API to exchange

information, Flux will then process the print jobs accordingly. Clients are easily kept in the loop via email updates automatically as soon as a print step is completed. AccurioPro Flux Ultimate – Web-to-Print The Ultimate version of the AccurioPro Flux software includes a web-to-print function. The online shop feature allows clients to submit their orders online 24/7. A preflight check and previews function allows client-uploaded documents to be automatically checked, equating to lesser to and fro communication in printing issues. The flux Document Converter allows uploading of up to 300 different file formats to the webto-print portal, this means that users don’t have to be restricted to specific file formats or convert their files unnecessarily. Clients will also be able to check on the status of their print anything on the online platform. For companies using Active Directory for authentication, the online shop can be integrated easily into their IT environments.

Tomoyuki Fujiwara, president of the company believes that the folding technology with a shingled stream feeder will not only be key for increasing their productivity dramatically, but will also become the mainstream technology of fold-ing machines in future. With the new folding machine, they were able to double their output compared to a domestic manufacturer’s folding machine, thus eliminating the need to outsource folding jobs. Yangjisa Co.,Ltd. in Korea Yangjisa Co.,Ltd. was established in 1976 and is employing a highly dedicated staff of 245. The company produces and distributes notebooks, business card holders, pocket books, diaries and telephone books. Facing

issues such as increasing labor cost and shortage of skilled labor especially in postpress area, they started looking for highly automated folding machines with higher productivity. Stahlfolder TH82-P turned out to be the right solution. They replaced a total of six conventional Stahlfolders with three highly auto-mated TH82-P machines in 2018 and run these new folding machines at a constant speed level of 150 m/min. Make-ready time was also shortened to increase their output by 50%. Managing director Lee Hyun, says, “I am very happy that now the

company can save space and labor cost with the new Stahlfolder TH82-P without compromising on quality and productivity.” Southern Colour Pty Ltd in Australia Southern Colour Pty Ltd is located in Victoria, Australia. The commercial printing company is an environmentally friendly producer and offer their customers a broad range of services from corporate services to marketing & agency. Their biggest issue was so far the big productivity gap between

The President of Asahi Shiko Co.,Ltd, Mr. Masayuki Hashino with his bindery team in front of Stahlfolder KH82-P

The lower output of their conven-tional folding machines caused a bottleneck and ultimately placed pressure further down the line when it comes to meeting customer deadlines. But now the newly installed Stahlfolder TH82-P with shingling technology allows them to run the machine with one operator with at a productivity level of 1.8 million 16-page signatures per month. Manag-ing director Rod Dawson is extremely satisfied with the investment and states, “We could not be happier with what we achieved with this folder. Our numbers show that it has delivered some significant productivity gains and workflow efficiencies that have made a real difference.” Asahi Shiko Co.,Ltd in Japan Asahi Shiko Co.,Ltd is located in Osaka and was established in 1963. They nowadays have 200 employees and are specialized in postpress operations such as cutting, stitching, folding and calendar production. Being confronted with the situation that a partnering trade binder closed the doors they had to look for an alternative. They had to decide to either find a new outsourcing partner for a good portion of their folding work or adding inhouse folding capacity. After their president Mr. Masayuki Hashino had seen the outstanding performance of the Stahlfolder KH82-P at drupa 2016 and a further produc-tion test in Heidelberg’s factory in Germany, he decided to invest in the new shingled folding technology. “One operator is running our new Stahlfolder KH82-P but he dou-bles the productivity we used to achieve with our domestically produced folding machine before. We are very happy as this results in a far higher profit.”

What does MPS “Beyond the Machine” mean? You can have the best press in the world. But, what if your operators didn’t receive training to run the machine in its optimal performance?

MPS presses can now be linked to prepress and post-press systems as well as to ERP or Management Information Systems (MIS). Labelled talk to me, this MPS innovation is essentially a protocol that allows for real-time data exchange - hence, control - at any given moment. We developed a new protocol for exchanging data between Management Information Systems and MPS printing presses. By constantly being able to communicate with the printing press operators will optimize performance and, in the process, enjoy increased job satisfaction.

What if you only know how to run one kind of label and cannot accept more special, higher margin applications? What if you create unnecessary waste and take too much time setting up jobs? Focus on lifecycle performance The press is not the primary focus for MPS anymore. Atze Bosma, CEO of MPS explained: “Yes, our presses are top-quality, but we offer label printers and converters much more. Highlevel Service, and our knowledge of Connectivity and Productivity are the foundation for optimal lifecycle performance of MPS machines. The result: extremely efficient production of highest quality Applications.” MPS presented ‘Beyond the Machine’ at the recent Labelexpo Europe 2019. It showed how the Dutch press manufacturer offers valuable processes that extend beyond a top-quality printing press and subsequently shares this with label printers and converters. The focus is on four key processes that extend beyond the press. Applications, Service, Productivity and Connectivity.

Connectivity: Talk to Me In the printing industry as well as anywhere else in modern business, connectivity continues to develop into a factor by which future success is measured. That is why MPS developed an innovative way of promoting the exchange of information between MPS printing presses and its surroundings.

Service A printing press is a significant investment in for any print business, and you need the confidence of ongoing support. Rest assured, at MPS, our service engineers are experts who know exactly how to care for your press. And, you can also expect the same level of service from our agents' engineers and customer support team. Our services include: Red Box, Remote Support,

Global Service Network, Expert Service Engineers as well as Training. Not only that, with today’s Internet of Things (IoT), connectivity developments and techniques are now available at a large scale with intensive security and robustness. Data to be exchanged from the MIS to press includes all jobrelated machine settings and tooling information presented to the operator in the job queue. Data from the press to MIS consists of the printing speed, metres/yards printed (order status), waste produced (waste sheets), set-up and printing time. MPS embraced and implemented these connectivity capabilities to create a platform for our customers which give more insight into their processes and equipment productivity, with performance measurement and analysing services.

Productivity PRINTING PRODUCTIVITY is our promise to our customers. With a focus on ease of operation, press automation and world-wide support, the MPS presses are designed to boost productivity. You will achieve productivity in the printing process and in the final printed product when using MPS presses. Productivity is the ultimate result of the MPS operator friendly technology, enabling you to maximise your efficiency and performance in today’s market. Our innovations include Automated Print Control (APC), Crisp.Dot Technology, Lean Inking Technology, iStop Technology, iStrip Matrix Rewinding, Nonstop Print Change (NPC) Technology, Registered & Control System and many more.

For years, flexo printing used the air mandrel method for sleeves in order to have the highest printing quality. However, the sleeves are held by a layer of foam, which is easily compressed. With low pressure, the foam corrects differences and balances the pressure. The dots in the design create a dynamic pressure on the plate, but the design can create different pressures and may create bouncing. As for this issue happening throughout the years, MPS unveil new E-Sleeve technology. Designed as a superior alternative to traditional sleeves that use compressible material, the new MPS E-Sleeve enables printers to generate predictable results at increased speeds, with guaranteed quality tolerances and more reliable production cost calculations. “Flexographic printing sleeves play a critical role in the overall flexo printing process, as they have a major influence on print efficiency and quality,” said Bert van den Brink, MPS Co-Founder. “We at MPS saw the need to change from sleeves that use an aero-mounting principle with a compressible inner core, to a design with precise concentricity across the entire plate for optimum print results. It’s a game changer for the printing industry!” Key features of the MPS E-Sleeve include optimum pressure settings to avoid unnecessary bouncing, precise concentric runout properties, constant parallelism for ideal register across the entire print length and increased dimensional accuracy for optimum register between all colours and die stations. With a reduced weight, MPS E-Sleeves provide easier and faster job changeovers and lower lifetime tooling costs through improved durability.

Label converting system opens the access to the folding carton market By Dieter Finna

The ability to produce labels and cartons on the same press enables label printers to expand their product portfolio. The "Carton Edition" of the digital Gallus Labelfire overcomes - as can be summarized after two years of practical experience - the previous process limitations of these applications in narrow-web printing. However, for converters, investing in a hybrid printing system also means breaking new ground and becoming a pioneer in a smart service industry Ever faster innovation cycles and ever shorter time-to-market increases the number of regional products for brand owners as well as the number of variants for test markets. Trends that label and packaging printers face on a daily basis, seeking solutions for markets where responsiveness is critical. Given the premise of agility and responsiveness, it's no wonder that it's a digital converting system that provides a cross-procedural solution for label and folding carton printing. The Gallus Labelfire with "Carton Kit" utilises the strengths of digital printing and is additionally equipped with optimized analog and digital inline finishing techniques.

The machine equipment Features of the machine configuration include a fiber breaker for paperboard and a corona pre-treatment for label stock. For the much higher web tension of paperboard materials, the press is stiffened, in other words the modules, on each of which two printing units are located, are clamped with steel straps. All pulleys are coated and designed for maximum diameter. Combination drying of UV and hot-air was also considered for the use of hybrid effect coatings on a machine designed for UV inks. The existing flexographic printing units are mainly used for formatless applications such as primers, varnishing

or non-digitally producible special effects. The digital printing unit with eight UV inking units (White + CMYK + GOV) can print colour images in an extended colour space as well as variable data. Metallic effects are achieved by digitally overprinted cold foil in all shades. Another special feature of the converting system is the Digital Embellishment Unit (DEU) from Steinemann DPE at the end of the processing line. It is used for the digital application of spot varnishes with gloss and matt varnish and - brand new - to achieve tactile effects. Application rates of 20 g/m2 can be applied, which corresponds to a coating thickness of 20 Îźm, without this process restricting the printing speed of 70 m/min. Even a coating application of up to 50 Îźm is possible, with a reduction in speed. In die-cutting, it is possible to choose between a semi-rotary or fully rotary die-cutting unit, whereby the maximum speed utilization requires a rotary diecutting unit. Extended batch production A comparison of print runs of Print sample of the Digital Embellishment Unit (DEU) of the Steinemann DPE with large-area spot varnish, spot varnishing with fine elements and simulation of a drip-off effect in the coating.

Labels in the personal care sector have a high demand for colour consistency conventionally and digitally printed labels published by FINAT in 2015 shows that the print run in digital printing averaged 13% of conventional run lengths during the investigation period. In other words, a conventional order corresponded to six orders in digital printing, divided into smaller batches. Of course, with small print runs, the change efficiency between the jobs is of particular importance. This is beyond doubt in digital printing.

overprint or UV flexo printing. This highly refined goods market is driving forward the development of the digital converting system with the aim of producing a completely digital end-to-end process. Steinemann DPE's Digital Embellishment Unit is already achieving inline fascinating and extraordinary results in coating applications and tactile effects in this market, which could previously only be achieved with a separate working step.

A digital converting system can therefore make particularly good use of the advantage of extended batch production. In this mode of production, only the print subject changes; the finishing effects, substrate and die remain the same. This enables digital printing to print different variants in smaller editions without additional setup time.

An extremely interesting target market of the "Carton Edition" is Health &

Beauty Care, especially in the area of personal care. In this market segment, labels and folding cartons have a high level of embellishment, and the print runs as well as the size of the cartons are very much in line with a digital converting system with a printing width of 340 mm. After a substrate change, the required labels for the primary packaging can also be printed on the machine. This also applies to the field of cosmetics and perfume, in which labels and folding boxes are elaborately

48 labels and folding cartons on the same machine, since the integrated colour management system places the highest demands on the colour consistency of labels and folding cartons. In terms of the packaging dimensions and print runs, the Pharmaceutical segment is also one of the target markets for this hybrid printing press. Due to the high physical resolution of the digital printing unit of 1,200 Ă— 1,200 dpi with a drop size of 2 pl, small characters and letters as well as fine lines and vignettes can be reproduced to zero percent. The colour management ensures colour consistency with high qualitative requirements in the Pharmaceutical sector.

Equally suitable, the pharmaceutical market segment. It places high demands on colour management and print quality finished with lacquer. With a hybrid label printing machine such as the Gallus Labelfire, hybrid coatings with a sandpaper effect or soft-touch coatings that impart a velvety, rubber-like or

soft feel to the haptics can be applied in the conventional range. Metallic effects emphasize the exclusivity of the packaging. In this segment too, it would be advantageous to produce

In the near future, the confectionery sector will also be among the target markets. New UV-ink formulations for food packaging are currently under development in this area, which means that this segment can also be included in potential considerations in the medium term.

49 "Beauty has to be staged in a sophisticated and at the same time entertaining way at the point of sale as well as on the internet." Martin Ruppmann, Managing Director of the VKE Cosmetics Association in the foreword to Personal Care 2020 Cost vs. benefit Digitally printed products are not cheaper. Where is your added value? What all these market segments have in common, is that the design variants of their products are characterized by a rapid change. These Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) are dependent on constantly re-staging their brand image. In the introduction of new products into these markets it is sometimes a matter of avoiding potential supply gaps. Therefore brand manufacturers accept overproduction of packaging material, because in this phase, consumer behaviour and thus the required print run with respect to the new product is difficult to estimate. Today, lowest inventory or even "zero stock" is an approach brand

ed gamut to newly ped XG Inks

manufacturers take, in which they only order as much packaging material as is currently needed for the campaigns. If design variants are tested and a variant runs particularly well, brand manufacturers are dependent on being able to reproduce at short notice, especially if the market behaviour of the end user fluctuates. Costs for storage and retrieval operations, slow-movers or obsoletes of packaging material are thus largely reduced or completely avoided. From this perspective, the production of packaging material in digital printing, especially small to medium runs, is quite interesting from an economic point of view. Smart solutions in services The development of a hybrid label printing machine explicitly for folding carton printing to a converting system with the equipment features shown is driven by practice. More precisely, by a brand manufacturer, that purposely pursues the goal of exploring all the possibilities of digital folding carton printing for its supply chain. The results in the tobacco market show that the hybrid printing system Gallus

Labelfire has passed its folding carton aging test. Now the path into further markets is open, especially in the segments Personal Health & Care and Pharmaceuticals. An enormous advantage when addressing other market segments is that the Gallus Labelfire with "Carton Kit" builds on a converting system that has already proven itself well in the label market. The extended version adds value and gives label printers and converters the chance to take on a pioneering role - single-source labels and cartons, quickly and reliably printed on a single press, in small to medium runs. This is in line with the market requirements of brand manufacturers and also meets the target of lowest inventory levels. However, the search for further developments in digital printing and digital finishing for a completely digital solution does not stand still. This is what makes the development in these areas so exciting.

Operating under the business principle of 'Integrity, Quality First, Service First, Reasonable Pricing' the company has continuously improved product quality and production capacity since it was established more than 20 years ago. Needless to say, its efforts have increased customer satisfaction. And despite various challenges, such as the sluggish growth of the printing industry, overcapacity and shrinking profit margins, Shengzhou Yuchen

continues to expand its scale and remains profitable. Focus on developing its own strength In 1997, a start-up business in the form of a printing workshop was founded with the help of a modest loan of tens of thousands RMB. The focus was on developing its own strength, so Shengzhou Yuchen strived to improve print quality and production processes. By now, it has grown into a prestigious printing company with an annual production of over RMB100 million. Over the past two decades, a wealth of experience in management and printing technology has been accumulated, to go with the solid economic and technical foundation that has been laid. It has faced tremendous pressure from the fall-out from the Sino-US trade war and a lot of difficulties in the printing industry, but Shengzhou Yuchen has

High-end product positioning Shengzhou Yuchen focuses on highend products, so it is important to improve the printing process and product quality in order to meet the rigorous requirements of customers. "The whole production process from the printing equipment to the die-cutter in post-printing was totally upgraded," Mr. Zhang says. "In addition, with the help of green printing supplies and auxiliary materials, advanced printing technology and highly efficient printing service, we have been able to keep our customers happy and so they choose to stay with us. The characteristics of our company's purchase orders are 'small and fine', which determine our place in the market and product positioning. Our development plan is determined by customers needs and order characteristics." Choosing the best printing equipment is vital to success Mr. Zhang emphasizes the importance of high-quality printing equipment. "A good press does not only improve product quality, but also brings us more purchase orders and

52 frontline employees all said that these printing supplies are actually very safe to use. The actual operation experience is very good and the equipment compatibility is strong. The most important part is that it is 10 times more effective. We've been able to save on other consumables since we started using it. For example: the W390 wash agent not only has low VOC and low usage, but also is very effective in cleaning. Before using it, we had to use many other auxiliary products, such as color changing paste, deep cleaning paste. But now, using the W390 wash agent alone is enough for cleaning, significantly increasing our productivity." strengthens the customers' faith in us," he says. The most important criterion is good quality at reasonable cost. Since the company' s initial cooperation with Manroland in 2003, Shengzhou Yuchen print on Manroland presses "At present, we are using a ROLAND 706 LV, which prints up to 17,200 sheets per hour," Mr. Zhang says. "This significantly increases our productivity and lowers our production costs. It also greatly improves our production capacity, profit margin and competitiveness. We' re very satisfied with Manroland' s reliability and stability." High-quality printing supplies must be compatible with the machine In addition to excellent printing equipment, the right choice of printing supplies is very important. "Nowadays some printers may not realize that there is some misunderstanding in the selection of printing supplies. Lacking the overall concept, they simply think that the materials used in the market must be a good choice," says Mr. Zhang. "However, the really good printing supplies should be compatible with the entire machine's operation. Printing supplies should not be judged only by part of usage experience or the price. Generally speaking, the cheaper auxiliary materials couldn' t quite meet the requirements of high-quality printing. The costs of changing spare parts and damages to operation are even immeasurable.

The loss outweighs the gain indeed." Shengzhou Yuchen have been using printcom® / magicpix® printing supplies and Mr. Zhang explains why. "Firstly, as the professional manufacturer of printing equipment, Manroland understands each part of the press very well and clearly knows which kinds of materials are the most suitable for the printing equipment. Based on this, Manroland R&D department developed printing supplies that are compatible with the entire machine operation," Mr. Zhang says. "These printing supplies ensure high-quality printing production apart from improving the efficiency of the machine. They also extend the machine life cycle." "Secondly, the printcom® / magicpix® washing agents meet safety standards and have environmental protection certifications, including FOGRA. It offers enormous economic advantages, as it has the characteristics of outstanding cleaning power, strong corrosion resistance, low VOC and environmental protection. What‘s more, printcom® alcoholfree fountain solution is very suitable for the special environment of our production plant. It‘s available in different types, so it meets the various demands of our extensive product range. It's tailor-made for us." "Thirdly, Manroland proactively provides us with professional consultancy and the aftersales ProServ360 PERFORMANCE, guiding our operators to ensure the maximum utilization of materials. Our

Mr. Zhang expressed his optimism about the development prospect of the packaging printing industry. "In the current economic environment, policies of industrial restructuring have been launched, putting great pressure on small enterprises. They face the possibility of elimination from the industry," he says. "However, our focus on developing our own strength will ensure us that we stand out in the competition. Although for now our profit margin is quite small, we still keep growing steadily. In the future when the balance between supply and demand reaches a reasonable level, profits and purchase orders will also be rationalized. The whole industry will grow in a healthy and positive way."

EFI appoints new Chief Technology Officer EFI has announced Dr Douglas Edwards as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Edwards replaces longtime technology leader Ghilad Dziesietnik, who recently retired after nearly 25 years with EFI – the last 14 as CTO. Immediately prior to this appointment, Edwards was CEO of Cambridge, England-based Xaar plc, a leading developer of inkjet print head technologies for industrial printing, and Chairman of Xaar 3D Ltd – the company’s 3D printing joint venture with Stratasys Ltd.

Before joining Xaar in 2015 Edwards was President of Kodak's Digital Printing and Enterprise Business with responsibility for flexo packaging, functional printing, electrophotographic solutions, commercial and consumer inkjet solutions with combined revenues of around $800 million. Prior to this, Edwards ran Kodak's largest graphics business, Prepress Solutions, with revenues of $1.5 billion. Edwards joined Kodak from Kodak Polychrome Graphics (KPG), a 50/50 joint venture between Eastman Kodak and Sun Chemical Corporation, where he was Vice President of R&D. He has also held senior R&D leadership roles with International Paper, Zeneca Specialties (formerly ICI Colors & Fine Chemicals) and Ilford® Photographic Ltd in the U.K. “Doug possesses one of the best technological backgrounds in our industry, and combines technology with demonstrated business accomplishments,” said EFI Chairman and CEO Jeff Jacobson. “EFI has a history of providing its customers with a competitive advantage by keeping them at the forefront of technology. I had the pleasure of working closely with Doug – when I was the CEO of KPG, as well as when I was the COO of Kodak’s Graphic Communications business – and I cannot think of a better person in our industry to lead EFI’s strategic and technology developments.” Edwards, who is based in EFI’s Manchester, N.H. facility, has a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and a Ph.D. in conducting organic materials – both from London University.

He has several patents, scientific papers and books to his credit in topics such as solid-state conductivity and photographic materials. He has also published research in textile dyeing, including work on the aqueous solution behavior of anionic azo dyes for textile fibers. “EFI was a customer of mine while with Xaar, and I am very aware of the unique opportunity EFI has now to further develop a portfolio that includes many of the world’s leading digital inkjet and print workflow solutions,” said Edwards. “EFI, with its printhead-agnostic approach, is leveraging technology from many different vendors, and I look forward to bringing my inkjet experience to help drive value from this strategy and further enhance EFI’s ‘best of breed’ approach. “Dating back to my time with Kodak and KPG, I have long appreciated Jeff Jacobson’s approach to innovation and technology development,” he added. “I look forward to working with him and the global EFI team to drive our customers’ success in high-quality print production.” Cosmetics Packaging Market is Estimated to Attain $35.9 Billion By 2025 The global cosmetic packaging market size is expected to reach USD 35.9 billion by 2025, expanding at a CAGR of 4.8% in the forecast period, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Sales in the region are scheduled to commence in early 2020. This announcement builds on 15 ePac locations previously announced in the United States, and entry into Europe with ePac Silverstone opening this month in the UK.

“Our Asia Pacific operations will be based on the same strategy that has grown our US and European operations, which is to serve our local communities with flexible packaging that competes with larger brands in design, structure, and quality. We feel Indonesia is the perfect launching point for our Asia operations with a large population that is demanding local, small brands on a regional basis,” said Jack Knott, CEO of ePac Flexible Packaging.

Managed by Hadi Widayat, Director of ePac Holdings Asia Pacific, the company will be a collaborative investment between ePac Holdings US, Era Prima and the Indosterling group of companies.

Canon places 3rd in patent rankings

According to Widayat: “We would like to empower local small businesses with flexible packaging products on par with the big brand owners to enable them to compete nationally and internationally. The short-run, quick turnaround philosophy of ePac will bring tremendous benefits for many local businesses that currently do not have the scale, capital, or expertise to compete. We will start with a base in the Indonesian market then moving forward to South East Asia and Australia/New Zealand”.

Canon was granted 3,548 patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office and maintained its third place ranking for patents granted in 2019 according to IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, a leading producer of global patent databases.

Focused primarily on food manufacturers and co-packers, ePac ships finished pouches in 15 business days or less, and rollstock in under 10 business days. ePac’s unique business model is built on breakthrough digital printing technology from Hewlett Packard. To learn more about ePac Indonesia visit ePacFlexibles.com In line with the global movement toward sustainable packaging, ePac’s all-digital platform is far more ecofriendly than conventional printing processes since waste and process steps are eliminated and energy consumption is reduced. Additionally, brands have the ability to order to demand so less flexible packaging is kept in inventory and ultimately discarded. ePac also offers recyclable, compostable, and “Post Consumer Recycled” (PCR) film options.

drupa is much more than just a global trade exhibition for the print industry - drupa ranks as a top international fair that identifies important trends, offers insights into future developments and drives inspiration. To provide participants with the best possible visitor experience, drupa invests in top-class knowledge transfer through its five special forums, the drupa Cube being one of them. “educate - engage - entertain” has once again been chosen as the slogan of the drupa Cube for 2020, designed to provide a broad spectrum of highly relevant content that is motivating, highly stimulating and interactive for visitors thanks to the various talk formats. World-renowned speakers are set to create a buzz with a visionary range of topics. Best-selling author Michael Gale and internationally renowned designer James Sommerville will also contribute to the top-class programme with keynotes.

“Our primary aim is to put as many ideas as possible out there that participants can successfully implement in their own companies,” says Sabine Geldermann, Director drupa and Global Head Print Technologies at Messe Düsseldorf. “We want to offer a programme that meets their actual needs.” Practical recipes for success James Sommerville and Michael Gale, along with representatives of global brands and leading industry experts, are on the starting blocks to share their knowledge with drupa 2020 visitors. With “The Digital Helix. Transforming your organization's DNA to thrive in the Digital Age”, Michael Gale has written a guide for decision-makers who want to bring their company into line with digital business models. Gale's book has become an international bestseller. Top brands use his company Inc.digital's digital helix algorithm to accurately place their marketing and sales investments in digitization projects. The drupa Cube looks at the future of the industry and offers concrete recommendations for activities that will secure a successful digital management as well as important background information on how to take the plunge into digital management. James Sommerville, on the other hand, is no stranger

to strengthening brand images. The British star designer dusted off CocaCola’s old image in 2013, raised its design language to a whole new level and gave it the face that is still etched in our memory today. “The print industry has undergone a remarkable technological transformation and can be hailed as a “best case scenario” in this respect - both in terms of changed processes and new business models,” says Michael Gale. “As we access new fields of application, acquire new technologies and capture new vertical markets, we are caught up in the maelstrom of this transition.

The print industry must proactively embrace this change. Companies that go digital increase their profits up to five times faster than their competitors; companies that don’t follow this track will therefore find the going incredibly tough. Personally, I find this new market not only important but also very exciting and I'm eager to share my enthusiasm with others. In the drupa Cube, we are putting the spotlight on a number of examples and solutions designed to illustrate strategies for successful corporate management.” A programme with depth To give it a clear structure, the drupa Cube programme is divided into five thematic fields. In addition to the Keynote Presentations by James Sommerville and Michael Gale, the Business Evolution lecture sessions focus on global market trends, best practices in sales and marketing, and innovative business models. Print Futures is dedicated to relevant technology trends in print and packaging, along with printed electronics applications.

Brand owners and agencies will also share their Brand Stories. In the fifth category, Executive Think Tanks, business leaders are invited to exchange ideas with keynote speakers. Pre-registration is required for these sessions. The complete programme of the drupa Cube, which will take place for the entire duration of the fair from 16 to 26 June, will be available online at the end of February at www.drupa. com/cube-en.

AUGUST 26 - 27th Ho Chi Minh City

Over 40 sessions - keynotes, C-level sessions, workshops, brand stories and best practice examples, the drupa Cube serves as a source of inspiration and expertise on new digital business models. The content will bring participants up to speed with the global megatrends that have already left their mark and are on course to shape the future. In this respect, digital transformation continues to play a significant role. The focus will be on innovative web-to-print and packaging technologies, the potential of a platform economy with more diversified sales channels and new collaboration models, as well as the changing expectations of connected customers in a social media culture - to the backdrop of the industry’s growing sustainability and circular economy obligations.
