Canon introduces worldwid Packed with new core technologies, the Océ ProStream series aims to take high quality inkjet printing beyond its current limits. The platform has already confirmed six installations; one of which will be in Asia Pacific. Sha Jumari reports. Canon unveiled the new Océ ProStream series on 17 February 2017 at its facility in Poing, Germany. Launched ahead of Hunkeler innovationdays 2017, the event saw visitors from 22 countries, including from the Asia Pacific region namely Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Australia.

The Océ ProStream series is a continuous feed production inkjet platform that leverages on Canon’s inkjet technology with the Océ JetStream, Océ ColorStream and Océ VarioPrint i300. Aimed at mid-to-high level commercial printing segments, the new series is able to produce premium quality prints on a larger range of

media, including print uncoated, inkjetoptimised, gloss and matt-coated papers, at a rate of 80m/min, or 1,076 A4/min. “We deliberately took a green-field approach to design, with a commitment to create a product that would open up fresh business opportunities for commercial printers, particularly in high-growth segments such as premium direct mail and marketing collateral. The Océ ProStream delivers on this commitment, pushing inkjet even further into the commercial printing mainstream with its amazing quality and versatility,” said Christian Unterberger, chief marketing & executive vice president production printing products, Océ. At the time of the announcement, six ProStream machines has already been

Packaging Innovation Asia Issue 2 2017

13

de debut of Océ Prostream sold. While most of the installations will be in Europe, the fourth installation is slated for Asia Pacific. For now, Canon is unable to specify its customer due to a disclosure agreement. Canon is expecting 25 presses to be sold by the end of 2017, and hopes to reach 100 presses by the end of 2018. The Océ ProStream features a modular design and it will be possible to configure to an alternative L-shape. The series has already earned a coveted iF design award 2017 from Germany’s iF International Forum for Design. The competition includes over 5,500 entries from 59 countries, presided by a 58-member jury of independent experts. In 2016, the number of pages printed by inkjet and toner is the same for the first time ever. The inkjet technology of today, while able to provide high quality, variable content and productivity, is still limited in its media flexibility. Facing this challenge head-on, the main feature of the Océ ProStream is its ability to expand the choice of media,

opening opportunities for new digital applications. “We are confident that the Océ ProStream series will continue to drive our success in our competitive market. With more than 33% percent market share, Canon/Océ is the undisputed worldwide leader in continuous feed inkjet. The Océ ProStream will build on this heritage and carry forward our proud tradition of innovation in professional digital printing,” Unterberger added.

The Océ ProStream series incorporates several new core technologies for continuous feed inkjet. Some of the technologies include new 1,200 print heads, ink formulation with ColorGrip, a contactless drying system and enhanced usability powered by a new DFE. New Print Heads The latest Kyocera KJ4 piezo electric drop on demand print heads is based on Océ DigiDot Multilevel technology for sharper details, smoother half tones

Packaging Innovation Asia Issue 2 2017

14 the print gap climate for less drying in the print head nozzle. The final print quality for uncoated media allows for more vibrant colours, less feathering, less strike-through, and less mottle. On coated media, ColorGrip enables less colour-tocolour bleed and less coalescence. and economised ink usage. It can print at a resolution of 1200 dpi and 1200 npi and produce multilevel dot modulation of 2 picoliter and 5.6 picoliter at full 1,076 A4/min productivity. The new print heads will have a higher firing frequency of 64 kHz, resulting in an increased generation of heat. To combat overheating, there is a print head water-cooling system. The cooling system will allow the inks to maintain its target temperature of 32 degrees celcius and below, and reduce the risk of drying in the nozzle. This is expected to result in improved jet stability over print width and time. New Polymer Pigment Inks with ColorGrip The ProStream utilises new pigmentbased polymer inks, which are ultra fast immobilizing, enabling high printing speeds for increased productivity. The

inks are developed and manufactured by Océ.

New Contactless Floatation Drying Technology

The polymer pigment inks work to form a ‘glue layer’ which is able to benefit in a few ways. Firstly, the ‘glue’ layer adheres the pigment onto the media, leading to a large range of media. Due to the layer, the pigments are kept on the surface of the substrate, which also results in a larger colour gamut. According to Canon, the polymer pigment ink set is able to match, if not exceed, offset colour gamut.

The sensitive floatation air dryer ensures that the printed paper is not touched until the print images are fully robust. The no-contact drying method means that there are no scratches, rub-off or changes to gloss levels in the dryer. The drying technology also allows for consistent drying of all colours, and over the whole paper width to avoid media cockle. The result is minimal stress to the substrate, allowing for maximum print quality.

The ink set is equipped with ColorGrip technology, which was first seen in the Océ Varioprint i300 press. ColorGrip technology allows printing on a wider range of media, including a variety of coater, uncoated offset stocks, to expand applications. The ColorGrip is applied using the print heads. It facilitates full area coverage to minimise paper curl in addition to humidifying

There is recirculation of heat in the system, reducing the amount of power required for heating and lessening exhaust of the system. There is also active cooling to stabilise the printed image and reduce paper stress. New Usability with PRISMAcontrol DFE

The Océ ProStream is powered by a new workflow system, the PRISMAcontrol. The digital front end will support direct native PDF production and modification. It allows for printer job and paper settings management, and has production queue control at the printer. Canon added that eventually DFE operations can be controlled remotely, for example, via a mobile device.

Firm hold on pole position in large formats KBA-Sheetfed Solutions has been the acknowledged market leader for largeformat sheetfed offset printing presses for many decades. That applies especially – but by no means exclusively – in packaging printing.

Since the initial market launch of a wholly redesigned Rapida large-format generation in 1995, a total of 1,500 largeformat presses have left the Koenig & Bauer factory in Radebeul. That equates to well over 6,000 printing units for the format classes 910 x 1300 to 1510 x 2050 mm since the turn of the century. Large-format sheetfed offset presses in unit design had already been manufactured at the Radebeul factory since 1968. It was then drupa 1995 which marked the transition from the dependable workhorses of the previous Varimat series to the extensively automated, highperformance Rapidas. Newly engineered from the ground up, the large-format Rapida series immediately claimed pole position in this format class. From the mid-1990s onwards, they successively displaced presses based on the outdated five-cylinder system with their fast makeready times, superior substrate flexibility and application-specific configurations. The availability of highly automated technologies geared to significantly accelerated job changeovers heralded a renaissance for large-format

sheetfed offset, not only in traditional fields such as book and packaging printing, but also in the commercial and publication segments. Large-format sheetfed offset from Saxony since 1968 Irrespective of the new competition which has emerged in this format class over the past ten years, KBA-Sheetfed remains the clear number one with a market share of 60% of new large-format installations. In total, more than 3,000 large-format presses have been supplied by the Radebeul factory, including 1,500 Rapidas. KBA-Sheetfed currently offers the large-format Rapida in four series: Rapida 145, Rapida 164, Rapida 185 and Rapida 205, which together cover formats from 106 x 145 cm to 150 x 205 cm. Presses becoming longer and longer The large-format Rapidas have also been setting new standards with regard to the press configurations realised for customers. The longest large-format press in the world to date, a 42-metre long Rapida 145 with a total of 14 printing and finishing units was recently supplied

to a European packaging printer. The first printing unit is followed by a coater and two intermediate dryer units, then an automatically convertible perfecting unit, another six printing units, two further coaters either side of two more intermediate dryer units, and finally a three-section extended delivery. Thanks to the comprehensive automation, with

automated pile logistics, simultaneous plate and coating forme changing, CleanTronic Synchro for parallel washing processes and full inline colour control, even such press lines are easy to handle. At home in international packaging and book printing Large-format Rapidas are at home in packaging, book and commercial printing companies throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australia and in a few individual cases also Africa. In the packaging segment, in particular, the share of long presses with 10, 11, 12 or even 13 printing, coating and drying units has risen significantly, not least due to a constantly growing trend towards inline finishing in folding carton production. In the coming year, such presses are to be delivered to customers in the USA, Sweden, Spain, Mexico, Brazil and Chile, among other countries. Where a largeformat Rapida typically comprised five printing and finishing units at the turn of the century, the average length of a press has today risen to seven units. With the Rapida 205, KBA-Sheetfed

30 oriented automation is another aspect which must not be neglected. Both yield significant benefits in terms of makeready times, ergonomic operation and efficiency. On packaging presses for industrial-scale operations, options such as anilox roller sleeves, which can be changed in a flash by a single operator, are fast becoming a standard choice.

also manufactures the press with the largest sheet format on the market – 3 m2 of print on a single sheet. Around 50 of these superlarge-format presses have been supplied since they were first launched in 2003. They are used above all in display and poster printing, but occasionally also in folding carton production where particularly large outer packaging is involved. The second press model in this format class is the slightly smaller Rapida 185, which has already been installed in a doublecoater configuration with 12 units and a total length of 38.5 metres. Alongside cardboard, microflute corrugated and plastic films, largeformat Rapidas around the world print a diversity of commercial jobs, books, magazines and catalogues. The

list of such installations shows not only straight presses with four or five colours and inline coating, but also long perfectors with eight printing units for 4-over-4 production. Slightly modified Rapida printing units are furthermore the basis for metal decorating presses from KBA-MetalPrint. Unique technical features To be able to defend a leading position on the market in the longer term, it is imperative for a manufacturer to offer users unique technical and processenhancing features. In the case of the Rapidas, this means consistent implementation of the DriveTronic dedicated drive technology at the feeder, the infeed (DriveTronic SIS) and in the printing and coating units. Practice-

Facilities to disengage unused inking units have been standard on largeformat Rapidas for decades. Palletfree logistics systems for substrates from 220 g/m2, reel-to-sheet feeders, cold foil modules and a double-pile delivery are further unique equipment options. Automation solutions such as CleanTronic Synchro (parallel washing processes), sheet inspection systems and inline colour control in numerous variants, including Instrument Flight for control based on grey balance, take workload off the press crew, shorten makeready times and reduce waste. Enormous productivity With top speeds of 18,000 sheets/h (Rapida 145) and 16,500 sheets/h (Rapida 164), the large-format Rapidas can output up to 30,000Â m2 of print in a single hour. That corresponds to the entire production and storage floor space of many a large packaging company.

Packaging and the Evolution

Nick Coombes reports for Folding Carton Industry magazine.

Following the launch of its ‘Evolution’ series and major sales successes at Drupa 2016, the German offset press manufacturer is optimistic about its future as part of Langley Holdings Group. In the five years that have passed since British entrepreneur Tony Langley acquired the assets of Manroland’s sheet fed press division in Offenbach, and its large user base worldwide, much has changed in the printing world, with the continued rise of digital technology, especially in the commercial sector, and the fragmentation of package print caused by a change in shopping habits encouraged by the Internet and social media. From the heyday of the former Manroland, today’s resurgent company finds itself fighting different battles with new opponents, with a whole set of new rules. So, it’s encouraging to see what progress has been made since the dark days of 2011, and nothing highlights that better than the interest shown by carton makers in the Roland 700 Evolution press.

Speaking recently to the trade media he commented: “Printers are facing new challenges now, as never before. Market maturity, lower profitability, environmental issues, and lack of personnel training are all serious challenges for printers, and our success will depend on how well we continue to enable our customers to meet and grow through those challenges. The Evolution series has been designed to allow carton converters to meet these new challenges, and those who have installed it are reporting how much the new user interface is helping them to deliver consistently high performance.” Among the features that boost productivity on the new press are simultaneous plate loading for faster make-ready, QuickStart Plus for waste reduction, Inline Foiling and Coating capabilities to add value, and

fast reaction LED drying for shorter lead times and more eco-friendly production. The latter, in particular, has been of significant benefit, giving colours greater vibrancy and allowing for a wider range of substrates to be processed efficiently. These include those that can be tricky to handle like metallised papers and boards, as well as synthetics. With a smaller footprint and lower power requirement than conventional UV systems, LED is now seen as the next generation in curing technology. Highlighting the impact that the new Roland 700 Evolution has had on their businesses are two Asian customers that serve different markets but agree on the benefits of the new press. Brilliant International Group, which is based in Hong Kong, was established in 1986. Now, with subsidiaries

also in Shenzhen and Zhengzhou, Brilliant is one of the region’s leading manufacturers of high-end cartons for the toy, cosmetics, jewellery, electronics, appliances and giftware markets with a staff of 4,000 and a production facility of 500,000sqft in Shenzhen. Speaking for the company, Founder and Chairman Dr Allen Shi said: “Our customers have been the key to our success so we have always made great efforts to support them by investing the latest and best technology. That way, we can keep the quality of our service high and bring innovation to the discussion table. The Roland 700 Evolution is the newest part of that plan.” A Roland user for more than 30 years, Brilliant now has six presses, including one large format Roland 900. Believing colour control to be the key to print quality, Dr Shi is impressed with the controllability offered on the new press. “We have always been able to maintain good colour management on our Rolands, but the 700 Evolution takes it to new levels,” he commented. Acknowledging that the market never stands still, Brilliant is constantly looking for ways to add value for its customers, and its new Roland is equipped with Inline Foiler, InlineInspector, Inline ColorPilot, and InlineRegister. “We recognise that our customers need to be able to differentiate themselves from their competitors, so we must offer

them as wide a variety of production capabilities as possible – the Evolution technology does just that!” In Thailand, sixty years of carton converting expertise has led to TCP Industry choosing a Roland 700 Evolution for its plant in Bangkok. The seven-colour press, with its inline capabilities is described as “the perfect press for our business”, by the company’s Managing Director Soontorn Soontornkumphonratana, who tested the press at Manroland Sheetfed’s Print Technology Centre prior to placing the order. “InlineColorPilot, InlineInspector 2.0 with PDF detection and InlineNumbering all give us automatic 100% control that is essential for highend cartons, and make production so much more efficient,” he added. With an annual production capacity of around 15,000 tons of board, the company is proud of its quality

portfolio of brand owners, who benefit from TCP’s accreditation to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and GMP/ HACCP, and FSC. In addition to the colour management controls it offers, the Roland 700 Evolution also offers a production speed of 18,000 sheets/ hour, making it a high performer and also a hungry animal to feed. With this level of new capacity, TCP is confident of its ability to grow the business in quality cartons, matching adding value with shorter lead times. It’s clear the new Roland 700 Evolution has added firepower to the manufacturer’s well-established and proven armoury of technology. With its direct drive and new control features, it raises the benchmark for medium format carton houses and offers a significant boost to productivity and potential profitability. Little wonder then that Rafael Peñuela sees 2017 as the beginning of a major growth spurt for Manroland Sheetfed.

Control of colour with the colour doctor Sydney’s Easy Signs, servicing clients nationally, has solved its colour management consistency issues with the help of Colour Graphic Services and its Mellow Colour PrintSpec analysis software plus Color Logic Copra and ColorAnt ICC profiling applications. Located on the outer fringes of Sydney, at Ingleburn; Easy Signs has conquered colour consistency by calling in the Colour Doctor – David Crowther of Colour Graphic Services. Easy Signs was established in 2006 at Miranda, and moved to sparkling new premises in November 2014. Staff count has risen to 36. Easy Signs’ reach is Australia-wide because they have fully embraced online commerce. Their website is clear and quick to navigate with all pricing calculations transparently online for both resellers and end

spectrophotometer, were unable to get colour completely under control. Mark introduced us to David Crowther, who he had worked with in the past. David performed a free colour health check using a special target print, measured it through Mellow Colour’s PrintSpec and produced a numerical report that identified the root causes of our colour variations.” Crowther says: “Following the colour health check measurements, PrintSpec was able to reveal colour vagaries across Easy Signs’ two SwissQPrint Nyalas, two HP Latex 360s and recently acquired HP Latex 3100. We started with training in printer calibration and ICC profiling and, in conjunction with this training, I advocated using Color Logic’s ColorAnt for measuring, analyzing and optimising to profile chart measurement data, and Copra for creating very high quality ICC profiles themselves.” Complete colour confidence He continues: “Further training covering monitoring and evaluation of on-going colour quality took place. With this, I advocated Mellow

Colour’s PrintSpec which produces clear and accurate reports on how a print organisation’s colour is tracking. PrintSpec identifies issues before they become problems and saves a great deal of time and money in re-prints and consumables. The fact that we can utilise ISO 12647 as a standard reference point for any print process, offset, flexo, digital and wide format is of great benefit.” Apart from the recently-installed HP Latex 3100, Easy Sign’s has recently become the first company in Australia

to upgrade one of their 2 SwissQPrint Nyala 2 UV Flatbed printers to the newly released 4x4 printhead configuration, giving them nearly double the previous print speed to cope with demand. “One thing for certain,” says Andy Fryer, “whatever production direction we head into in the future, we know that we will have colour quality totally under control, thanks to David and Colour Graphic Services.” www.easysigns.com.au

Anti-counterfeiting Technologies for Packaging Adding taggants and colour changing pigments provides valuable protection against counterfeiting. Introduction Counterfeiting has become a worldwide epidemic and the dangers it poses are vast. Counterfeiting threatens public health through the production of inferior medicines, foods and beverages. It causes taxes to increase by sidestepping official channels, increases public spending by boosting law enforcement to counter the illicit trade, and raises the price of legitimate products as companies seek to recoup their losses. The problem of counterfeiting spreads across industries and can befound in a wide range of diverse product types. Some of the key industries most vulnerable to counterfeiting include automotive, alcohol, computer hardware, mobile phones, packaged foods, personal goods, pharmaceuticals and tobacco.

Counterfeiting even affects simple things like sunglasses, shoes, tools, safety goggles, electrical plugs and tea bags. Pirated and counterfeit goods are increasingly being sold online, where the use of legitimate websites to deliver infringing goods have made it that much harder for law enforce- ment officials to detect. How big of a problem is counterfeiting? According to Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy (BASCAP) the global counterfeit goods market is worth $1 trillion1. The World Health Organization reports that the global trade in counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs, alone, is estimated to be worth over $32 billion. In February 2012, USA Today reported that in developing countries, approximately 30 percent of medication sold is fake. Not only can counterfeit drugs lead to dangerous health side effects, including death, they

can also erode consumer confidence in a brand. In November 2013, the UK’s The Daily Telegraph reported that wine industry experts estimate that up to 20 percent of all wine bottles sold worldwide are counterfeit. The Irish Times reported that 929 litres of counterfeit alcohol was seized by authorities in Ireland in 2013. An increase from 232 fake alcohol bottles confiscated a year earlier. Sixty thousand bottles and labels of fake champagne were seized in Italy in February 2014. In 2013, RIA Novosti reported that one man was arrested for smuggling 800 bottles of counterfeit vodka into Russia. Deaths caused by counterfeit alcohol in 2010 totaled 12,000 in Russia alone. Channel NewsAsia reported in February 2014 that over 1,200 tons of counterfeit and substandard foods and nearly 430,000 litres of counterfeit beverages were seized across 33 countries. These included everything from oil, vinegar, biscuits and chocolate bars to fake spices, condiments and substandard dairy products. In fact, $17.2 million worth of counterfeit food and drink was seized in Colombia.

Counterfeit cigarettes are also regularly seized. In Ireland 37.7 million fake cigarettes were detained in 2013. They pose even higher risks than legitimate cigarettes as they contain much higher levels of nicotine and other dangerous chemicals, such as arsenic, benzene, cadmium and formaldehyde. Exact numbers are hard to quan-

Anti-counterfeiting Technologies In terms of a layered approach, security solutions can be categorised into three basic types: • On-package based solutions • Serialisation (or track and trace) – including barcoding and RFID • Direct product testing

Sun Chemical is a global ink manufacturer with an integrated brand protection business. Its expertise in packaging, printing and security, as well as its diverse brand protection product portfolio and presence around the world, make it a good fit to help resolve counterfeiting issues on packaging and electronic devices for any multinational brand.

Of these options, the most prevalent technology implemented and recommended is on-package based solutions. Direct product testing is the least used anticounterfeiting method. Serialisation refers to the process of identifying and tracking at the unit level using a number specific to each unit. The number may be printed as an alphanumeric code or a data matrix.

The most cost-effective and successful security solution is an on-package approach. There are many benefits to using this kind of approach, including ease of implementation, the ability to be integrated into existing processes, a rapid yes/no determination for in-field users or customs officials and its low cost.

Track and trace is another method that processes data often in real time, as an item moves through the supply chain. Track For an on-package based solution, the sub options can include a combination and trace requires expensive read- of overt and covert technologies. Sun

ers, scanners, databases and personnel. Tracing is frequently used to find an item in case a recall is needed or to identifya product’s history in the event of a counterfeiting incident. Direct product testing refers to the use of laboratory or field analytical techniques to determine product authenticity by chemical and/or physical analysis methods. Common analysis methods can include, but are certainly not limited to, near-infrared (NIR), raman spectroscopy, colorimetry tests, UV-visible spectroscopy and various chromatography methods.

Chemical has a range of overt, covert and semi-covert security features that can be supplied as printing inks or be incorporated covertly into the packaging. Covert solutions offer increased security compared to overt solutions and are viewed as the second line of defence. Sun Chemical’s range of overt, covert and semi-covert solutions include: SunShift® overt solutions, SunGuard® semi-covert solutions and SunLock® covert solutions. Overt solutions are visible features that are added for consumer verifica-

tion and do not require detection devices. They can include holograms, inks that change colour with viewing angle, metachromic inks that change colour based on the light source and thermochromic inks that change colour based on temperature. Covert solutions are invisible features that are added for brand owner verification. Covert solutions will contain some form of taggant, or chemical marker that is only visible or detectable through a detection device. These devices range from simple laser pens to more sophisticated hand-held readers capable of detecting unique taggant signatures. Semi-covert solutions are concealed brand protection products and are only detected through a simple reading device and as such, offer security solutions that are extremely cost effective. Sun Chemical’s SunGuard solutions include ultra violet, infra-red and visible responsive inks. UV fluorescent inks are invisible in daylight but exhibit distinct fluorescent shades on exposure to UV light. There is also a range of IR responsive inks, including Apollo and

Packaging Innovation Asia Issue 11 2016

48 Highly flexible brand protection security solutions are made possible through technologies that are incorporated into the ink. Packaging printers are able to use these inks without having to adjust or replace any press equipment or process lines, as the products are supplied as standard inks suitable for all single-pass applications, which makes security a realistic option for all brand owners.

Orion, with readers capable of detecting up to four taggant signatures. Multi-taggant detection offers the ability to check for counterfeit and diversion if the wrong taggant signature/label is found in a different geography than expected i.e. taggant one is for Europe, taggant two is for Asia, taggant three for USA. The highest level of brand protection is covert solutions. Sun Chemical’s SunLock range of anti-counterfeiting products are only detected through a sophisticated reading device and as such, offer high level security solutions that are extremely robust and offer dedicated customer codes and unique authentication. One of the most sophisticated anticounterfeiting measures available for packaging includes the SunLock Verigard technology. This offers a lock-and-key approach to securing and authenticating brand packaging and valuable documents. Using machine-readable taggants and reading devices available only from Sun Chemical is a highly effective system of covert marking and verification, for both visible and hidden ink applications. The SunLock range also includes Microtag technology capable of reading through packaging as well as a selection of forensic markers, which are only added at parts per million and cannot be detected by handheld devices. Forensic markers can only be detected by laboratory analysis, which plays an important role in proving authenticity of products in courtroom situations. Sun Chemical’s security products and the technology it provides have been used in passports, tax stamps, postal stamps, product labels and embedded into plastic parts as well as many other product areas. Sun Chemical products have also been successful in protecting pharmaceuticals, electronic devices and food & beverage products for a number of years.

Evaluating At-Risk Products and Taking Action Increasingly, companies are employing in-house experts or teams of experts to handle anti-counterfeiting efforts. These experts evaluate the risk exposure of a firm’s individual brand and overall product portfolio. For example, security teams at a pharmaceutical firm might ask some of the following questions about a new medicine: • How will the product be priced? • If it’s a high value product could it become a target for counterfeiting? • Has this type/class of product been counterfeited before? If so, this might mean there is an established supply channel that can be utilised by counterfeiters. • If a product is not yet marketed, where

will the product first be introduced? (Europe, USA, or Asia.) Products that are identified by experts/ security teams as “potential high risk” are usually those that are expensive or high volume, or that have some type of inherent vulnerability. Based on this type of situation assessment the appropriate anti-counterfeiting technology and strategy can be selected and deployed. Conclusion All of Sun Chemical’s brand protection technologies can be applied directly to paper, plastic, metal, or foil by either printing or incorporation directly into a product at relatively low cost and in some cases require a small- sized reader. All of Sun Chemical’s materials are manufactured onsite in secure facilities. Additionally, all of Sun Chemical’s solutions are designed to have little or no impact on existing manufacturing processes to allow rapid and seamless integration into any customer supply chain. New dates set for drupa 2020 Organisers announced that dates for drupa 2020 has been brought forward a week, to be held from 16 to 26 June 2020. The initial dates were set for 23 June to 3 July 2020. The decision to bring forward the dates came after concerns that the original dates would clash with the European summer holiday period. Werner Dornscheidt, President and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, said of the move: “When we decided to stick to the 4-year cycle of drupa in consultation with the leading representatives of the industry during drupa 2016, the majority of holiday dates had not been published yet.” “Now we are really pleased that we can offer this solution although there is hardly any room for manoeuvre in the packed trade fair year of 2020. The fact that we agreed on a more compact stand construction period also contributes to holding the entire trade fair in June. And we are delighted to be able to act in our customers’ interest by kicking off one week earlier than originally planned.” Malayala Manorama, the largest circulating newspaper in Kerala, chooses QuadTech print quality solutions QuadTech announced that Indian publishing house Malayala Manorama Co. In addition, QuadTech’s excellent support team is already implementing a smooth installation process.” In addition to the Malayala Manorama newspaper, the award-winning company also produces nationally and internationally recognized magazines

Although print newspaper distribution has declined around the world, the industry is still growing in India due to increasing literacy rates which drive demand for regional-language media throughout the country. Newspapers are a source of news and entertainment, and are essential in providing education and empowering political participation. Despite the growing readership, the cover price of Indian newspapers tends to be very low, in order to remain affordable for a large proportion of the population, while reduced advertising revenue following the recent demonetization crisis is challenging profitability across the industry. Therefore, it is imperative that new print technologies improve efficiency and lead times to meet demand for the news, while reducing waste and keeping overheads low as the market evolves. “Malayala Manorama Co. Ltd is one of the most highly regarded newspaper printers in India, so it’s a great endorsement for our technology that they are installing QuadTech systems across the territory,” said Vinodhkumar Balakrishnan, area sales manager for

54 innovations for its customers. For its latest initiative, the company has collaborated with Sun Chemical, the leading producer of printing inks and coatings, to deliver the most robust and efficient, digital laser-based coding solution that supports customer packaging and labelling requirements. The new coding solution for secondary cartons combines Smurfit Kappa’s flexo printed corrugated boxes with Sun Chemical’s SunLase activated coating system resulting in high quality, reliable, late stage coding, which allows customers to laser mark packaging at the end of manufacturing operations. With the capacity to laser mark at the typical speed of an automated packing line, it offers a replacement for direct thermal labelling. As a result, there is less disturbance during the packaging line as there is no requirement for labelling and printing. This saves the business time and ultimately, drives operational efficiencies. The SunLase system is clean, hygienic (no inks or chemicals are used in the production) and is a much more reliable form of coding, when compared with labels and printing. SunLase is available in white and transparent laser-sensitive ink. Extensively tested within the FMCG sector, the late stage solution is being successfully used on packaging for leading companies. “We are delighted to collaborate with Sun Chemical, experts in their field, on this laser-based marking solution, which is further evidence of Smurfit Kappa’s commitment to innovations that make a meaningful difference to the packaging needs of our customers,” said Arco Berkenbosch, Vice President Innovation and Development, Smurfit Kappa. Michel Vanhems, SunInspire, Special Effects Inks, Functional Coatings and SunLase Product Manager EMEA at Sun Chemical, comments: “As regulations for traceability continue to grow, combined with the need for delivering fast, efficient

and cost effective output, our partnership with Smurfit Kappa has enabled us to combine our expertise to deliver a digital laser-based solution that meets all the demands of industrial applications. Having undertaken thorough testing of our application, and to already have it adopted by a world-leading organisation is testament to the benefits that it can bring in terms of versatile, high speed, late state identification for a wide range of secondary applications.” HELP CUSTOMERS WITH INCREASING REGULATIONS ON NUTRITIONAL LABELING Esko – one of the largest global suppliers of integrated solutions for the packaging industry – today outlined details of a comprehensive strategy for helping companies to adapt their packaging in the face of new regulatory compliance regulations on nutritional labeling. “We are seeing a wave of new legislation being introduced as governments all over the world seek to educate consumers via product packaging,” said Philippe Adam, Vice President of Global Marketing at Esko. “For the food and beverage industry, as well as many pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies, this means keeping on top of all the various regulations and adapting their packaging and business processes accordingly. With our new tailored solutions and smart software capabilities, we can help.” The announcement from Esko follows the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declaring that they are introducing a modernized Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods, with compliance required by July 2018. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) has since proposed updated nutritional information for meat and poultry

products. Regulators in other countries are taking a similar approach, with new guidelines on communicating nutritional information on packaging announced in Canada and France, with others set to follow. Solutions designed to untangle the complexity Depending on the needs of each individual organization and where the target data is stored, Esko has devised three clearly defined solutions. Solution 1 starts with the Brand Owner, Solution 2 starts with the artwork and Solution 3 is full system integration. Each organization can choose the solution most suited to its current situation and be confident that they will optimize their nutritional labeling process and create a single source of truth. Detailed information on the different solution can be found in Esko’s white paper on regulatory compliance process and technology. In addition, Esko is releasing a unique feature that pulls nutritional fact data from existing packaging files (AI or PDF files) and converts this to a data stream that can be used on any other piece of artwork to automate artwork creation. This capability is expected to result in time savings of up to 70% for customers who have to convert all their tables to comply with the FDA regulations. “It is important that companies can stay ahead of all new regulations and feel confident every single SKU they produce will have compliant packaging,” said Adam. “Esko will continue to support with new templates into which centralized nutrition and ingredient information can be automatically placed. With our solutions in place, new regulations can just be an everyday standard part of doing business and not an exceptional undertaking and disruption.”
