Increasing Productivity to Grow Business In today’s competitive digital printing landscape, both SMEs and enterprises should increase productivity to boost profitability. Sha Jumari reports.
Print industries are investing in more solutions and technologies to enhance productivity, alongside providing other value-added services, according to Jarrod Chong, senior business development consultant, Fuji Xerox. The trend points to one thing - print businesses cannot just print anymore. “Businesses should focus on investing in various solutions to enhance productivity such as Print MIS, colour management solutions and other workflow automation software to drive more jobs efficiently through their operations with lesser wastes,“ Chong added.
Fuji Xerox engages its customers through workshops, partnerships, seminars, training programmes and consultancy projects to help businesses grow. Most recently, the company held the 14th edition of Fuji Xerox DocuWorld Conference in Singapore to showcase the latest in print innovations and services. Some new tools Fuji Xerox has developed to increase productivity include the Object Oriented Halfton-
ing, which allows different halftone screens to be applied to various graphic elements on the same page to optimise the print result. The company has also developed a second new full colour production continuous feed inkjet press (FX 1400 IJCCF) with a smaller footprint targeted at business colour applications that require higher productivity (>1000 pages per minute).

Digital Technology Besides investing in productivity tools, having a qualified workforce is also an important factor for growth: “Attracting good talent to support their business transformation and continuous learning of best practices in this industry is the driving force to raise the bar of professionalism and growth in the graphic communications arena,” Chong concluded. Print Marketing – Still Thriving As technology continues to evolve, businesses naturally change the way they operate. Online marketing may be the talk of the town, but print will not be taking the backseat anytime soon. InfoTrends’ research reports in 2012 stipulated that promotional print took up the largest share of enterprise firms’ and SMEs’ marketing communication budgets. “Print is still a key communications channel in the enterprise space,” Chong agreed. “Consulting company, Caslon, foresees that variable information, full colour digital printing and direct mail market segments will continue to grow.” A 2014 study conducted by Woodwing Software revealed that 21.6% of marketers would be focusing on print marketing as a key channel in the upcoming year, above web and mobile strategies. A majority of 59.2% of marketers, however, would be implementing a multi-channel communications approach. Multi-channel communications strategy refers to a combination use of print, Web, mobile, tablet and social media tools to reach out to audiences. “Change is the only constant in today’s competitive environment,” Chong asserted. “Business owners should take a step back, give serious thought on which path they want their business to grow and make commitments to possibly invest in new business models like web-to-print and multi-channel communications.”

Polytype Asia Pacific Opens Its Doors Jeff Rowe, CEO of PAP
The Swiss company introduced the latest line of affordable print systems while welcoming visitors to its newly furbished factory. Sha Jumari reports.
In late March, Polytype Asia Pacific Co., Ltd. (PAP) celebrated the opening of its renovated headquarters in Bangna, Thailand. The event, which spanned over 3 days, saw visitors and customers from around the region. During the event, visitors were treated to seminars by industry experts and live machine demonstrations.
The star of the show was the Eco-line, a recently launched machine lineup for plastic tube decoration. When asked to comment on the turnout at the open house, Peter Ruth, global CEO of Wifag-Polytype, was satisfied: “It’s very good, our customers appreciate the range of machines,
products and supplies that we have here. We’re very confident we made a very good representation of our company to our customers.” PAP was founded in January 2006, and has been a fully functioning representative of all business in the Asia Pacific region. PAP will be focusing on business development, design and manufacturing of machines for the printing and decorating of plastic tubes and cups or containers for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, healthcare, toiletries and F&B industries in Asia. “Although we are a European company, we export more to other hemispheres than Europe, this is why we have to be close to other markets, such as PAP for the Asian market here. We take the structure and concept in Europe to standardise the machines in Asia to lower the cost, which is what I’d like to call Swiss-quality, globally produced,” Ruth continued. “With Polytype Asia Pacific, we aim to bring quality, high-precision Swiss machines to Asia,” concurred Jeff Rowe, CEO of PAP. “Within the zones here we have China, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, India and Myanmar markets. If I were to include the visitors who are here today, we also have Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Vietnam. That is the group representation of our market for this factory and our area of distribution. We have sold machines in most of the countries in the region already.”

Management/General PAP’s parent company, Wifag-Polytype, is an international development and plant engineering company, whose core expertise and market leadership cover metal packaging and printing on plastic cups and tubes. Wifag-Polytype has its roots in manufacturing newspaper printing presses, but has since evolved to include complete product lines and consumables to their customers. “There are three elements to our business. First, we want to be present in global hotspots, such as the Asian market with this facility,” said Ruth, on the global goals of Wifag-Polytype. “We are also selling a complete lineup of machines, not just a printer.
Finally, we focus on providing supply too, be it lubricants, blankets or plates. We want to give customers the complete package; to be a one stop shop.” On a micro scale, the factory’s location proved to play an important role in helping PAP achieve Swissquality standards at lower local costs. Within a 200km zone of the factory’s location, there are aeronautical, dye, stainless steel and hardening businesses– industries that are able to provide the quality parts required to build a Swiss-standard machine.
Peter ruth
“With those locally-sourced components and what we bring in from European companies, we can make a very high-quality machine for a worldwide acceptable market. The machines are about 55% local content, and 45% international content, so there is a good balance between the two,“ said Rowe.
Soon enough, all of Polytype’s basic machines would be assembled in Thailand and shipped across to Europe. This move will enable the Europe team to concentrate wholly on high-end development and manufacturing. PAP’s branch also has its own team of designers working on developing new technology and products for the Asian market, setting the factory out to be a well-rounded establishment. ECO-LINE PAP launched the Eco-line at the open house, a lineup consisting of high performance machines at a more affordable value. The company collaborated with German engineering company, Breyer, to complete the lineup. The Eco-line allows users to extrude and cut plastic tubes, send them directly over to dry offset printing, and have them fixed with shoulders and capped – all at one go. There

The extruder then links up to a transportation system, the accumulator, which links up to the RDA T, a dry offset printing machine. A second accumulator continues the lineup to facilitate an uninterrupted flow of output. To end off the setup, the last contraption is the HC 120, a high speed heading, orientated capping and membrane machine for extruded and laminated tubes. “Our focus here is to bring Swissquality machines into Asia, at a far more affordable price by transferring the technology and high-end automation that’s created for the European and US markets,” Rowe emphasised. “We simplify those machines, while making sure we maintain absolute quality, before sending them out into the market at a more affordable price. There is the option of the machines being able to be upgraded, when before the flat price of a Swiss machine was much too expensive.”
is also the flexibility to add a final station to include sealing and filling. “The Eco-line concept is designed to match the desire and forward focus of Asian companies that are beginning to struggle with producing at the low end cost. Labour costs has grown exponentially,” said Rowe, on the motivation to introduce the Eco-line into the Asian markets. “For example, China used to be the production central for the world, but it’s beginning to lose that ability to be a dominant producer because of rising labour costs. Countries like the US, Japan and Australia, and the European Union have long used fully automatic machines, and as such are producing high quality tubes at competitive rates compared to the ever more expensive China. China and other SEA countries need to reinvest to maintain their competitive advantage along with the improved quality and

As advertising and personalisation trends extend its reaches to automotive, vehicle wrapping is expected to increase. Sha Jumari reports. Vehicle wrapping is a growing trend in outdoor advertising. A main reason is in its effectiveness in reaching out to a broad range of audiences. Unlike other advertising medium such as print ads, banners or billboards, audiences are least likely to ignore advertising on a vehicle.
vealed that 80% of participants could recall certain aspects of vehicle wrap advertisements seen once and 91% could recall significant parts when viewed several times a week through normal commuting. 90% felt that vehicle wraps were more effective than billboard ads.
A study done by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America re-
“Vehicle graphics are on a definite rise in out-of-home advertising,” said
Pravin Krishnan, segment marketing director for Asia Pacific, Avery Dennison. “Especially given the increasing number of vehicles in Asia Pacific, the nascent stage of fleet graphics in the region compared to Western markets, and the ‘eye balls’ that a moving vehicle will attract compared to a static billboard.” Krishnan observed that the growth is largely propelled by personalisation, especially in vehicle paint replacements. Termed the ‘paint replacement vehicle wraps’, this trend involved covering the factory colour on a car, truck, or boat with a different-coloured wrap vinyl. “Everyone wants to be different, be it an individual or an organization for how the vehicle looks like or how the interior environment where they work, live and play,” Krishnan added. “One of the main benefits of this is the ability to change the color of a vehicle, without affecting the factory paint. It looks great, while preserving the resale value of the car. Paint replacement wraps provide all of the benefits of changing the vehicle’s color, without the commitment. If the car owner decides to change the color

a year or two later, the wrap can be removed easily, and rewrapped,” said Krishnan. Avery Dennison’s Supreme Wrapping Film recently topped benchmarking studies, when placed against seven other films from major manufacturers. The benchmark tests were con-
ducted by three independent applicators at three different skill levels with the support of an independent wrap shop. Slideability, repositionability, air egress, conformability, application speed, removal speed and finish quality were evaluated. Unsurpris-
ingly, the Supreme Wrapping Film is popular with customers in the Asian region. According to Krishnan, time efficiency, easy application, superior performance and long-term removability are characteristics that vehicle wrap applicators and installers are looking for: “Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film ranked highest for slideability and conformability, and achieved the highest score for overall performance. Application times were also measured and Supreme Wrapping Film was rated the fastest to apply, at almost 20% faster than other products.” Some basic key points to take note of when handling vehicle wrapping projects include selecting the correct type of media to be used for the vehicle, for example, a full wrap would require using cast films. Proper curing of the inks prior to any over-laminating and application is also essential. “And last but not least, use properly trained and highly skilled applicators using the right methods and tools,” Krishnan emphasised.

MOVING TOWARDS GREEN GROWTH An increasing number of countries in Asia are transforming their economies toward a more sustainable model due to climate change and accelerated environmental damage. Sha Jumari reports.
In a world where the progress of a nation is measured by a country’s GDP, the state of the environment often takes a toll. In favour of economic progress, many countries across the world do not take into account the consequences of environmental issues such as air and water pollution, energy use and natural resource depletion. Southeast Asia is estimated to be the most vulnerable to the climate changes, as a consequence of rapid carbonintensive growth. An IEA research in 2009 estimated that Asia accounts for 27% of the world’s energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, and the share is highly likely to increase to 44% by 2030. In light of increased awareness and recent environmental calamities, more countries are making commitments to a green growth economy. The concept of green growth is the means by which the current economy can make the transition to a sustainable one while reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, minimising waste and inefficient use of natural resources. “Governments understand the effect urbanisation has on the environment. We see it almost everyday as

well, in China, Hong Kong and Malaysia, where the pollution index is very high. There is a concerted effort now by the government, compared to say, 10 years ago,” said Nicholas Ng, regional manager for graphics solutions, HP Asia Pacific and Japan. At the forefront of green growth are the economies of Japan, the Republic of Korea and Singapore. Since 1970, these countries have successfully made the transition from being least developed to fast growing economies, suggesting that developmental efforts that facilitate environmentally-sustainable growth is possible. It appears that these countries are leading the way for emerging markets around the region. In March 2014, Japanese companies started pitching advanced environmental technologies in emerging Asia, where economic expansion and population growth are sharply boosting demand for all things green. At the same time, Vietnam had developed a National Green Growth Strategy to help improve people’s living standards and accelerate the process of economic restructuring in a sustainable manner. “Surprisingly in Manila, they even have one day called ‘Strawless Day’ where you can’t find straws on one day of the week. They also have this campaign in Makati, one of the bigger cities, where they are also going on a green drive to have lesser usage of plastic. I think it is getting there,” Ng continued. Print Goes Green Fundamentally, printing is not an environmentally-friendly industry, from the amount of paper used, to the use of solvents and consumables.
Since green growth meant that adopting sustainable practices can maintain economic development, ecofriendly printing is fortunately not only becoming a norm, but sought after. Big players in print, such as HP, Canon and Fuji Xerox, already have comprehensive environmental initiatives. Ng pointed out that there is a definite trend in corporate buyers and advertisers requesting specifically for printing that is not only VOC-free, but PVC-free as well. “One of the major retailers actually requested for PVC-free and VOCfree printing for recent campaigns. A main reason was for safety. In case of a fire, the printed material does not combust as easily as the ones printed with VOC or plastic. When those materials get burnt, the toxic fumes that are released are extremely harmful. Materials printed with PVC-free, or latex ink, do not release these harmful chemicals. So there’s actually also a business aspect to their choice,” Ng continued.
The main reason? Costs. Ultimately, a substantial amount of investment is required to implement green technologies. Ng, however, implored printers, to take on a macro view on the overall costs of adopting print technologies. “The overall cost of using latex printing is actually on par, if not lower. Compared to a solvent printing, the turnaround time is lower and there is less manpower required to maintain it,” Ng said, using HP’s prolific waterbased latex ink technology as an example. It all boils down to communication and customer education instead: “Let’s put it another way. If the print buyer or advertiser is aware that with just a little bit more, they can get printed outputs that is green and not harmful for the environment, and can still reinforce their corporate image, do you think they would go for the green printing? Perhaps that’s the message that has yet to be brought up to the print buyer, and needs to be communicated enough.”

KBA Asia Pacific wins customers’ interest in workflow solutions Following the recent announcement of KBA’s partnership with Optimus for the worldwide sales and distribution of their management information systems (MIS), this new collaboration has already started to bear fruit in Singapore. A local printing house will be implementing the Optimus Dash MIS in the near future.
Health, money and prosperity is what everyone wishes for during the Chinese New Year. To kick-off the Lunar Year of the horse successfully KBA Asia Pacific invited customers from various print shops throughout Sin-
gapore to an informative event that promised exactly that: a tool to increase efficiency, save money and boost profitability. The seminar took place at the German Centre in Singapore on 20 February. After starting their day with a Bavarian breakfast the print experts were welcomed by KBA Asia Pacific managing director Stefan Segger. Optimus CEO and coowner Henny van Esch, LogoTronic product manager Chris Waschke and KBA IT-specialist for system integration Martin Beer travelled to Singapore to present an overview of KBA and Optimus workflow modules and their functionalities, which included a live demonstration of the interaction of both systems. “Apart from our printing technology KBA LogoTronic and Optimus Dash MIS, either as stand alone solutions or in combination, offer our customers solutions that help them become even more efficient by optimizing all surrounding processes and activities”, says Chris Waschke. Major advantages of the Optimus Dash are its flexibility and user-friendliness. “Too often various systems are in use in a company’s different departments. Such so-called networked islands hardly ever contribute to more efficiency. Optimus
Dash together with LogoTronic Professional, on the other hand, presents a closed-loop workflow solution tailored to the needs of each individual customer. It even offers the possibility of integration with existing subsystems if that’s the customer’s wish”, explains the product manager. The first order for an Optimus Dash MIS placed by a print firm in Singapore was already finalised during the visit of the experts from Europe. All of the company’s printing presses will automatically feed data into the system using connect boxes and postpress equipment will be connected via user-friendly browser interfaces. From the quote to the finished print product and even through to shipping, with a setup like this all data has to be entered into the system only once and it is made available across all departments. The management level in particular will soon benefit from the data that helps identify optimising potential. Managing director Stefan Segger: “For a long time MIS systems were regarded as too expensive for mid-sized print shops. In our seminar we were able to illustrate that an MIS tailored to the specific needs of each of our customers often becomes vital given the changing media landscape and shrinking margins.”
Integrated workflow solutions are becoming increasingly more popular in printing firms in Southeast Asia, too. This was seen at the joint workflow seminar from KBA and Optimus in Singapore

ROLAND scores big in Australia Australia's first high speed ROLAND R706 LV HS press has kicked off to a flying start at leading packaging printer, Hannapack Australia’s first high-speed Manroland R706 LV HS touches down at Sydney’s Hannapak, with two more 700 series sheetfed presses following hot on its heels. The $multi-million investment is a resounding vote of confidence for the German manufacturing giant’s standing as a leading force in the packaging industry. The state-of-the-art press went into Hannapak’s Richmond site over January and February, and is now up and running live jobs at the country’s largest, privately owned, paperboardpackaging manufacturer. The six-colour R706 LV HS is the most productive press in its class, with a top speed of 18,000 sheets per hour, and a raft of the latest production efficiencies and automation in the market. A serious investment by any standard, Sam Hanna, Managing Director of Hannapak, tells Print21 that the move is well worth the outlay. According to Hanna the decision was, of course, based on a range of criteria, “Most importantly, our previous success with Manroland presses, confidence in the Manroland ownership under Langley Group who have shown commitment and focus to servicing the packaging industry and the specific technology available in the HS high speed series that will deliver op-
timum operational efficiencies for our company.” For Hanna the new gear driven pallet changeover device in the AUPASYS material logistics system helped seal the deal. The cutting edge innovation is stand out feature, along with the Inline Inspector 2.0 system with PDF verification integrated into the InlineSorter, ramping the press up to a peak capacity of 18,000 sheets per hour.
“This combination equates to the most productive 3B format press for producing quality packaging in Australia,” says Hanna. The R706 LV HS is custom built for folding carton packaging, designed in direct consultation with leading companies worldwide, including Hannapak, to handle high volumes while delivering uncompromised high quality work. Finding the right balance was a crucial ingredient for Hanna, who already has the machine up to its 18,000 sheet-an-hour peak speeds. “This latest investment is in line with our company philosophy of combining traditional values with state-ofthe-art technology. It will service our company and customers well for the future,” he says.
While the Hannapak install is done and dusted, an R706 LTTLV sheetfed press is scheduled to land at Colorpak’s Braeside facility in Victoria this month, with a third 700 to land shortly after that. According to Steve Dunwell, Manroland Australia, managing director, these recent successes are a marked endorsement from the local industry for manroland’s ongoing commitment to provide leading technology and service to the packaging sector. “The people at these top packaging printing companies know what they want in a sheetfed press. They are very experienced printers and I believe the decision to go with the latest manroland 700 is a vindication of the high productivity technology now available for the packaging market,” said Dunwell. The Hannapak installation was executed seamlessly over January and February by manroland’s local technicians, together with specialists flown in from Offenbach. The press is additional to Hannapak’s current capacity and brings its tally up to a total of seven manroland presses in operation.

In-Mold Label Suite illustrates game-changing potential of digital production Label and packaging printers and converters as well as print buyers should mark their agenda’s for the Xeikon Café on Packaging Innovations, hosted by Xeikon and its Aura Partners (May 20 till 22 in Belgium) Participants will discover how digital production can enhance and transform not only the label and packaging industry, but also their own business. The three dayevent will highlight the complete range of Xeikon's label and packaging application suites: Folding Carton Suite; Self-Adhesive Label Suite; Heat Transfer Label Suite and In-Mold Label Suite. This release provides more details on the In-Mold Suite and how it overcomes the issues of conventional technologies. In-mold labeling (IML) is rapidly gaining popularity for the decoration of plastic containers. With in-mold labels the decoration is an integral part of the container, applied during molding and not added on at a later stage in the production process. While this complicates the production and limits its f lexibility, the result definitely makes up for it with an eye-catching no-label look that stands out on the shelves. Conventional printing technologies struggle to provide an affordable solution for today’s demands for product launches, short runs and personalization.
mented with four supporting components: (1) software, (2) consumables and tools, (3) print media and (4) pre- and post-printing equipment. Live production of labels for butter tubs and Clics buckets At the event, a Xeikon 3000 Series press equipped with ICE CMYK and opaque white toner will be printing label designs in roll-to-roll mode for thin-walled as well as thick-walled in-mold applications. Michelman primer will be used to precondition the substrates. Running inline with the press will be a MiniUCoat in which the
prints will be coated with a water-based varnish from Actega Terra before being rewound. To prevent the buildup of static charges, the MiniUCoat will be equipped with Meech antistatic bars. The reel with the varnished prints will be mounted onto an off line Rietstack converting machine that will diecut the labels into their final shape.
“Digital printing of in-mold labels can overcome the issues of conventional technologies and will enable further grow th of the in-mold label market,” says Filip Weymans, Xeikon’s Director of Segment Marketing Labels & Packaging. “Together with our Aura Partners we have developed the In-Mold Label
Suite, an integrated solution that enables you to use digital printing as part of an automated in-mold label production process.”
This configuration will run two applications: a label for a thin-walled container – a butter tub with matching

tunity to learn from first-hand experience, from a company that has successfully started up digital production of in-mold labels. If anyone is still looking for a reason to attend, this is it!” Based in the Netherlands, with also branches in Germany, aL Printing (www.alprinting.com) provides services to customers throughout Europe. Founded in 1938 as a dairy business, aL Printing became a specialist in innovative packaging solutions. Using digital printing technology since the 1990s, the company decided at the end of 2013 to invest in a new digital platform, opting for a Xeikon 3500 Digital Press.
Meet the customer: aL Printing “Digital in-mold label production is a game-changer. We are therefore extremely pleased that one of our pioneering customers, aL Printing, has agreed to come and provide more details about their move into digital in-mold label production,” comments Weymans. “This Xeikon Café offers visitors the unique oppor-
This choice was determined by several factors. One particular important one is the Xeikon digital printing technology’s fit with in-mold labeling: PET dry toner does not deform during molding and meets FDA standards for indirect food contact as well as being CPSIA compliant. The combination of a 508 mm imaging width and unlimited repeat length supports any size of label and the 1200 dpi resolution combined with four-bit variable-dot density enables matching offset printing quality. aL Printing sees huge potential, especially in the decoration of thick-walled buckets. Many of these are decorated using conventional techniques, such as direct screen printing,
which fail to meet brand owners’ requirements in terms of image quality. The volumes sold of these larger containers are also lower than those of common consumer goods. So, conventional techniques are simply not cost effective for in-mold labeling of this type of packaging. About the Xeikon Café on Packaging Innovations – easy and free registration The Xeikon Café will take place at Xeikon’s production site in Lier, Belgium. It will run from May 20 till May 22, with basically the same program each day so participants can choose the date that best suits them. Attendance is free but registration is required online at www.xeikoncafe.com. The Xeikon Café is hosted in collaboration with the following Xeikon Aura Partners, who will all attend the event: 3M, AB Graphic International, ACTEGA Terra, Advanced Track & Trace, Argos Solutions, Bograma, CERM, CHILI Publish, Diamond Photofoil, Grafisk Maskinfabrik, Highcon, Hybrid Software, Iggesund, Kama, Label Traxx, Meech International, Michelman, OneVision, Rietstack, RotoMetrics, Schober Technologies, Siliconature, Stora Enso, Squid Inks, ThermoFlexX, Treofan, Tronics and UPM Raflatac.

The Label Says it All Security logistics labels from Schreiner ProTech showcase the label industry's expertise in product authentication - FINAT, Europe’s international industry association for selfadhesive labels, is active in promoting the achievements of its members, many of whom are label converters, through its annual label competition, whose winning entries go forward for judging in the prestigious World Label Awards. Both competitions demonstrate the versatility, f lexibility, and technical skills that print on to self-adhesive labelstock can deliver. One area where self-adhesive labels have, in recent years, proved particularly adept is in the creation of security labels to help brand owners to provide authentication data for their products, and foil the perpetrators of today’s huge global business in counterfeit goods and ‘grey market’ trading. The world ’s biggest brand Global sales of fake goods are now estimated at $650bn per annum, making 'counterfeit’ the world ’s biggest brand. As well as threatening the welfare of purchasers, fake goods negatively affect customer brand loyalty and, of course, the brand owner’s profitability.
A winning example A fine example of an effective security logistics label from Schreiner Group’s ProTech division has been honoured in the 2013 World Label Awards competition. Proclaimed the winner in the technical category covering combination line print, the Schreiner security logistics label features a complex package of overt, covert, and digital security features. It demonstrates ‘ best practice’ in leading-edge layered security solutions for high-value and sensitive goods -- in this case, critical OEM automotive spare parts – and it has already found commercial success for authenticating BMW spares. Why use a label? Labels are the preferred carrier of security features of all kinds, since they provide an accessible substrate which may be checked for authenticity in a number of ways. With self-adhesive labels in particular, the opportunities
to build covert security features into or under the label face, or in the adhesive, are diverse. Three levels of security The three major areas of focus are the provision of devices for visual authentication (with the naked eye, or with a scanner of some kind); secure tracking systems (creating a continuum through the supply and distribution chain); and anti-counterfeiting technologies – often bespoke -- that are difficult, or impossible, to replicate. Such devices may be overt or covert, to provide the broadest possible umbrella of protection for everything from ethical pharmaceuticals to legal documents, designer handbags, automotive parts, prepared foods and their ingredients, toys, and computer software. They can involve the use of the label substrate itself (eg with security watermarks), inks and coatings, Data Matrix codes, holography, and even chemi-

cal taggants and microtaggants -- including DNA -- which are detectable only with dedicated specialist scanners. The key to success in the real world The Schreiner ProTech security logistic label ’s specification brings together a complex cocktail of such features – some of which require professional authentication, and all of which need brand owner involvement in developing and using their company’s own security labelling system. As Thomas Völcker, Director, Business Development and Marketing at Schreiner ProSecure, explains: ‘Security is not just a matter of technolog y today. It’s a matter of educating the people who have to authenticate the product.’
demetallized holographic stripes which produce different (and identifiable) optical effects when they are viewed from different angles.
Visible tamper evidence Such education will begin with checking entry-level packaging features like security seals, which will readily provide tamper evidence without the use of any tools except the naked eye.
Security inks deliver additional features. Thermochromic inks, which change colour at different temperatures, fade to show a ‘genuine’ message when the labelled pack is at body temperature. UV luminescent inks produce a hidden text line and other marks when viewed under a black light. Additionally, a high-resolution random pattern, printed from an extra-high-resolution digital master, is printed on the label to enable authenticators to detect label copying. Anyone copying the pattern illegally will achieve less precision and technical detail in the image, since it is being copied from previous printed matter and not from the digital master. (It will in fact be slightly blurred). A simple scan with a handheld device or even a smartphone and will uncover this blurring and identif y the fake.
Covert features At the second level of security, covert features are added to the Schreiner security logistics label via the printing process, including two- and three-dimensional
Track-and-trace functionality Finally, a unique track-and-trace security product batch code is added to verif y the integrity of the logistics chain. As with all advanced authentication label-
ling solutions, customer-specific features can be added to order – and Schreiner ProSecure offers many additional options. Foiling the fraudsters is now a major concern on high-value goods such as automotive spares, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and on wines and spirits. Multi-layer security labels from FINAT member companies such as Schreiner ProTech are contributing significantly to reducing the damage for both purchasers and brand owners.
Schreiner Group were also victorious in the Innovation category in the 2013 FINAT Label Competition with their Electric Conductive Films – produced using advanced printing and diecutting techniques, and used in electrical and electronic applications such as membrane touch switches and other conductive functions.

CUSTOMERS TO BREAK APPLICATION BOUNDARIES HP today announced the new HP Latex 300 Printer series, helping sign shops, quick printers and small to medium print service providers (PSPs) easily expand large-format printing capabilities, offer new application areas and build a healthier production environment.(1)
Small and medium PSPs have long used traditional eco-solvent ink devices for outdoor print jobs, which lengthen turnaround times and limit application versatility. Powered by third-generation, water-based HP Latex ink technology, the HP Latex 300 Printer series helps lowvolume customers efficiently handle more outdoor and indoor applications with improved durability and image quality. “Small to medium PSPs face the challenge of simultaneously addressing more applications to reach more customers while reducing costs and fitting in smaller spaces,” said Stephen Nigro, senior vice president, inkjet and graphics businesses, HP. “Backed by proven HP Latex Technology, the new HP Latex 300 Printer series addresses these needs with durable quality and easy operation, helping customers break application boundaries and establish a competitive advantage.” Also for small to medium PSPs, HP is introducing the industry’s fastest 60-in
large-format inkjet printers, the HP Designjet Z6600 Production Printer and HP Designjet Z6800 Photo Production Printer.(2) New series accelerates transition from solvent to HP Latex Introduced in 2008, HP Latex Printing Technology has established a new largeformat product category with more than 19,000 units installed worldwide.(3) Offering a complete portfolio for the low-volume market, the new HP Latex 300 Printer series features a range of price points, sizes and production levels to serve customers from small sign shops to higher-volume PSPs. Helping customers transition more pages from solvent devices, HP 831 Latex Inks offer scratch resistance comparable to hard solvent inks(4) on PVC banners and vinyls, while the HP Latex Optimizer enables high quality at high speeds. Thirdgeneration HP Latex inks also contribute to a healthier work environment,(1) with
odourless prints(5) that come out completely dry, ready to finish and deliver. Designed for easy operation in small spaces, the entry-level, 54-in HP Latex 310 Printer offers the benefits of HP Latex in a compact model with front-media loading to maximise the production area. Optimised for the HP Latex 310 and 330 Printers, the easy-to-use SAi FlexiPRINT HP Basic Edition Raster Image Processor (RIP) software is bundled with these printers.(6) The 64-in HP Latex 330 Printer combines application versatility with affordability, handling larger, heavier rolls and printing up to 50 m2/hr (538 ft2/hr). The higher-volume, 64-in HP Latex 360 Printer prints up to 91 m2/hr (978 ft2/hr ) and increases application versatility with an ink collector for porous textiles.(7) The printer also features automatic frontto-back registration for printing doublesided banners. “As a long-time solvent user, we recently began exploring HP Latex Technology to

replace our outdated solvent device,” said George Beitner, owner and founder, All Star Signs. “Since installing the HP Latex 360 Printer, not only are we able to print three times faster than with our solvent device, we also decreased project turnaround time from one to two days to 24 hours. This difference alone has dramatically impacted how we do business.” New HP Designjet printers built for high speed and unrivaled image quality(8) The new HP Designjet Z6600 Production Printer and HP Designjet Z6800 Photo Production Printer increase productivity with print speeds up to 50 per cent faster than previous HP devices.(8) Additionally, these printers are uniquely designed to deliver high-value indoor applications and gallery-quality prints, with durable output that last up to 200 years.(9) The HP Designjet Z6600 Production Printer prints more efficiently than its predecessor using up to 30 per cent less ink,(10) saving time and costs with an optimised ink configuration. The HP Designjet Z6800 Photo Production Printer produces top-quality prints at high speeds with advanced colour management features, including an embedded spectrophotometer, as well as HP Chromatic Red Ink for a wider colour gamut and uniform gloss.(11) “We collaborate with a large network of professional photographers who demand top quality at high volumes, making image quality and productivity critical to what we look for in a printer,” said Oscar G. Farell, marketing director, AP Photo Industries. “The speed and reliability of the new HP Designjet Z6800 Printer not only meets and exceeds our core needs, it has allowed us to transition jobs from three separate devices to the new printer, without compromising image quality.” Availability The HP Latex 300 Printer series and HP Designjet Z6600 and Z6800 Production Printers are expected to be available worldwide on 5th May.(12) HP will display the new products and solutions for the first time in booth 2057 at the ISA Sign Expo in Orlando, Fla., 24th – 26th April. At ISA, the company also will show new large-format media options for HP Latex inks, which will be available worldwide through licensing partner Brand Management Group

Primer option to Jeti Titan S and HS f latbed inkjet printers The Jeti Titan HS made its North American debut at the International Sign Association’s Sign Expo last week in Orlando. In May, it will also be shown at FESPA Digital in Munich, Germany. Its newly added primer option improves ink adhesion and extends the durability of prints. Incorporating the latest generation 1,280-nozzle Ricoh Gen 5 print heads, the Jeti Titan S (speed) and HS (highspeed) combine exceptional print quality and high productivity at a best-inindustry price point. They are ideal for high-value work like POP/POS viewed at close range or for the high-level art, fashion and cosmetics markets. A new digital primer makes the Jeti Titan S and HS even more versatile. Digital primer is typically used to print outdoor signage and displays on low-cost yet more difficult (in terms of adhesion) materials (e.g. fluted polypropylene) with the objective to extend the durability of the prints. Agfa Graphics’ digital primer solution can be applied to the entire image or ‘spot-wise’ only. It is subsequently cured by the printer’s UV curing system. Digital primer vastly improves adhesion without sacrificing either the maximum density or the ink color gamut US company Phase 3 Marketing & Communications expands business with Jeti Titan HS Recently, Atlanta-based marketing services provider Phase 3 Marketing & Communications became the first company in the USA to install a Jeti Ti-
tan HS. The company had been using a 36-head Jeti Titan 3020 successfully for years. “Compared to our other flatbed equipment, this machine uses far less ink to obtain the same, if not better, quality. The Jeti Titan HS will bring faster speeds, better quality and more output. It will be a great complement to our existing machinery for digital POP printing”, said Gail Turner, Senior Vice President, Operations & Purchasing, Phase 3 Marketing & Communications. “On top of that, Agfa Graphics does an outstanding job with their service and support. We feel that they set the bar for service performance.” Jeti Titan S and HS come with Agfa Graphics’ Asanti workflow for the sign and display market, which adds color management and automatic pre-flighting. This not only provides consistent quality but also minimizes errors, thus increasing productivity and saving time. Asanti is completed by the Asanti StoreFront cloud-based web-to-print system, which comes as an optional low-investment SaaS solution. More about the Jeti Titan S and HS The 3x2m (122x79 inch) six colors plus white Jeti Titan S is equipped with one row of print heads and is field-
upgradeable to two rows to increase productivity. The Jeti Titan HS comes with two rows of print heads. Reflecting market demands, the default set-up for both models is six colors plus white (CMYKLcLmWW). White printing supports different modes including overprint, under-print, spot, underspot, fill and over-spot for rigids and pre-white for roll media. The “flat-to-roll” option on the Jeti Titan S and HS give users the ability to print flexible media with the same high quality and resolution as rigid materials and this at the full maximum media width (3.2m). Thin ink layer technology Thanks to the ‘thin ink layer’ pigment dispersion technology, Agfa Graphics’ large gamut of UV-curable inks enable printing on a broad range of durable indoor and outdoor applications on flexible materials, including top quality banners, self-adhesive vinyls, and front- and back-lit graphics. These inks deliver the highest quality prints with the lowest ink consumption per square meter in the industry.

Investment Security for Today and Tomorrow Is High Productivity Only Possible with a New Investment? Muller Martini has shown that it is a reliable partner when it comes both to new machines and extending the life cycle of existing systems. With market requirements changing rapidly, the matter of investment security is currently of particular importance to graphic arts businesses. Companies are seeking solutions not only for today, but also for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Whether the choice is made for new equipment or a used machine is secondary. What is important is that production systems satisf y current and future requirements. Highly Automated New Machines New machines have the advantage of enabling more efficient production and making it possible to react promptly and f lexibly to customer requirements thanks to higher net output or improved product quality. That allows graphic arts businesses to attract new customers or regain jobs that have been lost since they can now provide better quality and short delivery times. The trend toward smaller runs and shorter processing times together with higher quality color printing creates new opportunities for innovative products. As a result, digital printing is increasingly becoming the focus. There are, however, solutions that are designed both for offset and digital printing. For instance, a digital ready Presto
The Presto II saddle stitcher Presto II from Muller Martini is digital ready, which means that it provides investment security. II saddle stitcher fitted with signature feeders for conventional use can be expanded for use in digital printing in the future. That provides customers with a greater degree of investment protection. Extended Machine Use Provides Alternative However, is it possible to sur vive in the graphic arts business over the longer term without investing in new machinery? At the current time, price pressure is forcing many businesses to improve the productivity of their existing equipment at the minimum expense or to invest in a used machine. In parallel with new technolo-
gies, Muller Martini supports the trend toward using existing machinery for longer periods with its comprehensive ser vice portfolio. MMSer vices extends the economic life-time of systems and makes them fit for new business models thanks to upgrade options. Companies do not necessarily have to do without state-of-the-art technolog y even in the case of relatively old machines. Regular maintenance and updates are key to sustaining productivity and profitability. NEWS Revolutionary blood recycling machine, called the Hemosep, using Stratasys' Dimension 1200es 3D Printer. Stratasys Ltd. (Nasdaq: SSYS), a leading global provider of 3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions, today announced that Brightwake Ltd., has developed a revolutionary blood recycling machine, called the Hemosep, using Stratasys' Dimension 1200es 3D Printer.
has the potential to be a game-changer within the medical industry, saving the National Health Service millions."
The Hemosep recovers blood spilled during open heart and major trauma surgery, concentrating the blood cells ready for transfusion back into the patient. This process, known as autotransfusion, reduces the volume of donor blood required and the problems associated with transfusion reaction. The prototype device features a number of Stratasys 3D printed parts, including the main filtration and cooling systems, enabling the Brightwake team to functionally test the system in its intended environment, before the final device is produced from metal. The device has been awarded the CE mark and is attracting global interest from distributors and healthcare providers.
One of the first patients to benefit from the new Hemosep device is 50-year-old UK heart patient Julie Penoyer, who, as a Jehovah's Witness, requested not to receive donated blood products. Because the device captures, cleans and puts back lost blood lost during an operation, Hemosep was the perfect solution for her.
"The Hemosep consists of a bag that uses chemical sponge technology and a mechanical agitator to concentrate blood sucked from a surgical site or drained from a heart-lung machine after surgery," says Steve Cotton, Brightwake's Director of Research and Development. "The cells are then returned to the patient via blood transfusion. In a climate of blood shortage, this recycling methodology
Successful UK Trial Upholds Patient's Religious Beliefs Successful clinical trials of over 100 open-heart surgery operations in Turkey confirmed the Hemosep's ability to significantly reduce the need for blood transfusions, and further trials are now continuing in the UK.
The success of Hemosep's use during Mrs. Penoyer's operation presents new possibilities for patients across the globe, whose religious beliefs mean that receiving donated blood is not an option. Prototyping Costs Slashed by 96% and Lead-Times Eliminated Thanks to Inhouse Production For Brightwake, with medical device
production demanding extremely accurate parts, capable of enduring the stress of functional and safety tests, the company's use of 3D printing has presented significant cost- and timesaving benefits. "Previously we had to outsource the production of these parts which took around three weeks per part," explains Cotton. "Now we're 3D printing superior strength parts overnight, cutting our prototyping costs by 96% and saving more than ÂŁ1,000 for each 3D printed model. "3D printing has not only enabled us to cut our own costs, it has also been crucial in actually getting a functional device to clinical trials," he adds. "The ability to 3D print parts that look, feel and perform like the final product, on-the-fly, is the future of medical device manufacturing." Originating in Nottingham's traditional textiles industry, Brightwake is a family-run creative development, engineering, production and research company specializing in innovative manufacturing solutions. With nearly 35 years' experience, Brightwake has now extended its expertise into the medical field, starting with the production of wound dressing for the UK's National Health Service (NHS). Armed with its Stratasys' Dimension 1200es 3D Printer from UK reseller Stanford Marsh, the company now has the in-house capability to extend its medical device manufacturing program beyond the Hemosep. "In the fast-paced, competitive medical device industry, we are seeing more and more of our customers use 3D printing to bring their products to market more efficiently and cost-effectively," reports Andy Middleton, Senior Vice President and General Manager EMEA. "The ability to turn ideas into functional products quickly is something that in the long-term we believe will improve the quality of care, and in some cases, save lives."

Sagawa chose the FLEXCEL Direct System, an award-winning direct engraving flexographic platemaking system recognized by the 2013 InterTech Technology Award of the Printing Industries of America, for its superior quality and productivity advantages. Sagawa Printing is currently building on its formidable nation-wide branch network and large production network. This effort includes work at Japan’s leading gravure printing plant, the Hino Plant located in Shiga, which is the company’s offset and gravure printing center. As part of this expansion, the company plans to provide premier solutions in four areas: printing, digital data, distribution and RFID. In addition to its traditional businesses of commercial printing, Sagawa Printing is entering into the new business of package printing. The firm is constructing an exclusive worksite for flexographic printing, where two KODAK FLEXCEL Direct Systems for flexographic platemaking will be introduced, together with two flexographic printing presses, two extrusion lines and two laminators. “In our quest to purchase a platemaking system, we focused on direct engraving systems because we’ve been using
large direct engraving machines for publication gravure printing,” says Akihiko Uyama, Director, Sagawa Printing. “A simpler platemaking process was another advantage of direct engraving platemaking systems. We decided to incorporate the KODAK FLEXCEL Direct System because of its high productivity based on unique, high-power semiconductor laser imaging technology. It’s also easy to use, which was another key to our selection. We are looking to Kodak Japan to provide us with a deeper knowledge of flexo printing and higher quality products, including plates.” In alignment with these bold moves, Sagawa decided to incorporate waterbased flexographic printing to enhance its environmental footprint. Overall, the KODAK FLEXCEL Direct System is positioned at the core of Sagawa’s platemaking process for flexographic printing with water-based-ink, driving success in the printing process with its superior quality and productivity potential. “The fact Sagawa Printing has selected the FLEXCEL Direct Systems shows how aggressively we’ve been digitizing the platemaking process in the flexographic
The KODAK FLEXCEL Direct System features innovative, energy-efficient, high-power semiconductor laser imaging technology, Kodak-formulated pressready elastomers and workflow software for accurate image reproduction. This outstanding combination of technologies offers sleeves and plates for flexographic printing superior in both quality and productivity potential. In the round (ITR) platemaking for flexographic printing, which was once labor intensive, is now made much simpler by the FLEXCEL Direct System. Package printing accounts for approximately 30 percent of the Japanese printing industry, with gravure printing dominating the flexible packaging segment with more than 99% market share. However, flexographic printing is attracting more attention in the Japanese package printing market as a result of a great improvement in its quality and because of its environmental advantages. This trend has caused an increasing number of companies to consider switching to or initiating flexographic printing programs. The FLEXCEL Direct System forms part of an innovative portfolio of KODAK Flexographic Solutions designed to help printers and pre-press providers transform the capabilities of flexo printing and improve productivity.
