CGS wins Idealliance G7 System Certification with ORIS Lynx Idealliance recognises latest advancements in ORIS Lynx including the new G7 Curve Connect feature CGS Publishing Technologies International, LLC announces that ORIS Lynx has been awarded Idealliance G7 System Certification. G7 is a catalyst for achieving colour consistency across varying print technologies. The achievement ensures that users can now benefit from a guaranteed industry-wide standard of excellence when using CGS colour management technology. ORIS Lynx is CGS’s cloud-based colour management tool designed to deliver precise, repeatable colour along with the ability to generate Custom ICC Profiles. The ORIS Lynx system validates industry standards like SWOP or GRACoL, then guides users step-bystep through the process of creating an ICC Output Profile or a Device Link Profile, each optimised for G7 calibration.

In contrast to competitive systems, ORIS Lynx calculates G7 correction curves directly, simplifying the calibration process and simultaneously establishing a measurable and uniform colour management process. A number of recent ORIS Lynx advancements were key to the certification of G7, Idealliance’s industry-leading set of best practices for managing gray balance. Pivotal among these is the new G7 Curve Connect feature, which enables process colours to be curved to meet certified G7 standards, producing gray balance and tonal characteristics defined by the G7 specification. With this capability, users of ORIS Lynx now have independent verification of CGS technology for facilitating consistent, repeatable colour across jobs, presses/ printers and processes.

The G7 Curve Connect feature can also be found in OEM editions of ORIS Lynx “Colour management is crucial to our clients and partners. I can’t imagine selling an offset or digital press without a controlled process for colour managing it,” said Cory Sawatzki, director of ORIS Lynx. “The aim of CGS is the development of powerful proof and workflow software solutions to colour manage every step from prepress to print production. Consistently and seamlessly producing repeatable color, day after day, is a core need of our customers. They need to be able to trust the tools that they use – this G7 Certification is a powerful endorsement of our own efforts here at CGS and the benefit of peace-ofmind to our customers.”

Printing with out ink, or burning trees onto paper Former students of the University of Technology in Delft have founded the start-up Inkless that has developed a technology able to print without ink and on any kind of paper by burning letters and “prints” onto paper. cause holes. Furthermore, the color of burned-in letters is more brown than black and additionally it is nonpermanent, so that it can be rubbed off.

Imagine your printer ran out of toner or ink but you urgently need to print something. It would be better to have a printer which prints without any kind of ink, don’t you think? There are already some techniques which work without ink, like printing with water or light, but in any case a special paper is necessary. Former students of the University of Technology in Delft, in the Netherlands have now developed a technology able to print without ink and on any kind of paper by burning letters and “prints” onto paper. The name of their start-up sums it all up perfectly: Inkless. Carbonization is the Magic Word The researchers use an infrared laser that passes through a lens and burns the paper. This process is called “carbonization” and with this, they say, the burning-process is perfectly controllable. So Inkless can “print” less deep so that the paper will not be destroyed by the laser. The intensity

of the printed color can be influenced by changing the pulse duration of the laser. This means the scientists are able to print the exact black color which is the same as the one printed with a conventional printer. The technique itself works similar to burning paper by using a magnifying glass and sunbeams. But burning in connection with paper basically is a bit challenging ;-). Of course, it might

No Ink, No Problem – But Lots of Advantages Inkless did a lot of research to ensure that the quality of their burned-in prints is as high as the quality of conventional prints. Also, this technique comes with many benefits, for example, there is no more need for toner cartridges, which reduces waste and energy on the one hand. On the other hand, it reduces costs for the whole printing chain because cartridges do not have to be produced any longer. Another advantage is that manufacturers do not need special coated paper, which again reduces costs. The founders of Inkless created their printing method for industrial markets and large scale printing but also for private home or office use. It is possible to print texts, images and graphics on paper as well as on labels or packaging surfaces – but by now only in black.

Inking a jet with inkjet Inkjet technology might soon be literally flying high, thanks to an invention by SwRI and their technology for large-scale robotic inkjet printing on complex surfaces, including aircrafts. Inkjet technology might soon be literally flying high, thanks to an invention by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). The leading innovator in advanced science and applied technology has secured a patent for a technology for large-scale robotic inkjet printing on complex surfaces, including aircrafts. The Perfect Solution for a Complex Job Inkjet’s success story will not come to an end, with the technology now opening up to aircraft construction. It is complex aircraft decorative coatings where the printing technology’s potential could fully be exploited. And chances are excellent due to inkjet’s

superior performance and properties compared to decals or appliqués which – on aircrafts – pose problems with adhesion and robustness. “As aircraft decorative coatings have become increasingly complex, the aircraft manufacturing and maintenance communities are seeking more efficient ways to apply complex graphics,” said Clay Flannigan, who leads SwRI’s robotics and automation engineering activities. “There is a lot of interest in using inkjet technologies applied to aircraft painting but to fully leverage the potential efficiency and aesthetic advantages of this process, the technology must be able to print on

a variety of complex geometries and in varied orientations over large areas.” High Accuracy Inkjet Printing Here is where Flannigan’s invention “High Accuracy Inkjet Printing” sets in as it overcomes obstacles linked to painting on large, complex surfaces. Furthermore, the team was able to adjust for inaccuracies in robot positioning and vibration of robotic arms – no more discontinuities, gaps or spaces when printing over curved tops due to a perfect alignment. This is how the process works: A vision sensor detects an encoded pattern to ensure accurate application of graphic images. The encoded pattern is deposited on the surface in a known location with respect to the most recently deposited graphic swath. The printing system includes highbandwidth servo actuators to locate the print head with respect to the encoder pattern to permit precise positioning for the next swath. For the aviation industry this could be the future technique for applying large graphics to aircraft fuselages, wings, tail fins, and engine nacelles. Both the respective soft- and hardware have been covered in the patent. “We have been developing new processes for removing paint from aircraft for nearly three decades. Now we are looking to revolutionize the way decorative finishes are applied to aircraft,” Flannigan said.

Visitors will not only learn Heidelberg’s vision of a digitized future and the Print Industry 4.0, but also see for themselves a truly digitized, integrated and networked print shop on our booth. Our customers expect us to deliver added value solutions, and we are actively helping them make the transformation to a digitized future.” Heidelberg helps print shops make transformation in the digital era At China Print 2017, Heidelberg showcased the industry’s digitized future, with the aim of helping Chinese print shops carry out a success transformation and achieve sustainable growth in the current digital era. How to make it work for print shops to transform from a traditional print shop into a Smart one? First of all, Heidelberg Smart Print Shop is attributed to the workflow Prinect, which integrates all areas and lays the foundation for integrated communication inside the print shop, as well as between the print shop and their customers and suppliers. Besides, based on “Navigated Printing” philosophy, Intellistart 2 in the new Press Center XL 2 can identify the ideal changeover sequence, show the operator the shortest way to get from one OK sheet to the next, initiate all make ready operations and inform the

operator when manual activities are necessary. Last but not least, Heidelberg Assistant offers personalized access – whether via computer or mobile – to all of a print shop’s key service, contract, and performance data. The online portal also provides access to a variety of Heidelberg products and services, offering customers the greatest transparency and end-to-end support for their entire printing business. All the above topics have attracted many visitors’ attention on Heidelberg’s booth during China Print 2017. For example, at the “Smart Area”, there were special introduction about Heidelberg Assistant during the presentation break-out session, which was always packed out by a number of customers who are eager to learn new things.

Packaging Solution: New product and new applications, successful sales launch of new Speedmaster CX 75 in China During China Print 2017, a Speedmaster CX 75-4 press with innovative DryStar LED technology from Heidelberg was showcased for the first time. This press is the combination of the innovative platform of Speedmaster XL 75 and components of Speedmaster SX 74. The new Speedmaster CX 75-4 on the show is digitally integrated with Prinect Press Center 2 and the patented Intellistart system, presenting the highly automated and integrated print production as a result. The most innovative DryStar LED technology achieves the highest energy efficiency. No drying time is needed, which means the sheets can go straight into postpress, no more waiting times, and delivery times are shorter.

he 500 mm elevated Speedmaster CX 102-7+L press also at Packaging & Label Printing Area has unsurprisingly been the longest and most impressive sheetfed offset press on the trade shows in China. Equipped with high end features like Prinect Press Center XL 2, Intellistart 2, Wallscreen XL, AutoPlate Pro, Automatic Wash-up, Prinect Image Control 3 and fully integrated in the Prinect workflow it addressed the increasing demand for top end solutions for advanced print production. Following the “Push to Stop” philosophy introduced at drupa 2016 the live presentation showcased the huge saving potentials of “Navigated Printing” on this highly automated press in perfect combination with “Multicolor”. The Multicolor technology from Heidelberg delivers the world of color on a single sheet, achieves

value, to support online customers operation, to optimize the workflow and productivity, which ultimately connects our business to the print production volume. All in all, a distinct Customer Centric business model will help us redefine our growth strategy,” said Hundsdoerfer.

outstanding quality with its unique 7 color separation and screening but less waste, less wash ups, faster production and shorter delivery times. In addition, it is the first time for Heidelberg and its subsidiary Gallus to make joint efforts to present the integrated Packaging and Label solution at China Print. A Gallus ECS 340 ten color label press was shown, to offer customers the possibility of even more cost-effective label production of the highest standard. Commercial Printing Solution: Smart and tailor-made for customers, high demand for locally produced machines The Speedmaster CS 92-4 press at Commercial Printing Area is not a new face on the show, as it was officially launched on Print China exhibition two years ago. However, its costeffective production of commercial jobs, especially the benefit from 20 percent cheaper printing plates than the 70 x 100 cm format still impresses many customers. With DryStar LE UV technology, the CS 92-4 is able to achieve impressive quality, instant drying and fast turnover. The onsite demonstration presented two gang jobs as well as rapid curing on uncoated papers, making LE UV an ideal solution for commercial print shops who want to improve their response to constantly changed market requirements.

Another particular highlight at Commercial Area is the Hybrid Printing done by a Speedmaster SX 74-4 sheetfed press together with a Versafire CP digital printing press. With Prinect workflow system, the print orders are reasonably separated and automatically sent to different printing process. Those orders fit for digital printing, the production data goes directly to Versafire CP. Those orders fit for sheetfed printing, the data goes to CtP and the Speedmaster SX 74. With Heidelberg Prinect system and Color Management, the commercial print shops can harness the benefits of Hybrid Printing and enjoy the highest cost efficiency at any run length. There are still quite some stories to tell. The Stahlfolder TH 82-P, which was unveiled at drupa and is well known for its high performance, productivity and stability, has made its first debut in front of Chinese customers on the show. Another Stahlfolder CH 56, by doing 3 different folding jobs changeover within just 5 minutes, could have given audience the most unforgettable experience during the show time. Heidelberg’s Customer Centric business model “Heidelberg has gone digital. Our mission is confirmed. The customer is at the center of everything. Digital technology and digital business models will allow us to connect our components to create customer

“What benefits we offer our customers are always our key consideration, because our own success depends on that of our customers,” Benny Huang emphasized. That is the main reason why Heidelberg China is launching eShop during the China Print show. What’s more, Heidelberg Services is aimed at maximizing customers’ profit, by means of enhancing equipment availability, productivity and print quality. New concepts and new service products have been introduced during China Print. “Print shops in the region of Asia, especially Chinese print shops, have seen China Print the most important event of this year. They want to take this opportunity to make sure they keep pace with the new developments in the printing industry. The demands in Asia for automation and Smart Printing is considerable,” said Rene Ludvigsen. “We have confidence that we will help our customers make a success transformation towards the industry’s digitized future.” China remains an important market for Heidelberg Heidelberg generates around 10 percent of its total sales in China, thus making it one of the biggest market for the company. And market growth of the print production volume is expected to continue in the future. Heidelberg has structured its market organization in China accordingly. With a workforce of about 900 employees, it boasts the most extensive organization of any foreign press manufacturer. Its workforce includes about 500 sales and service staff and around 400 employees working in production.

Great interest in individual print and finishing solutions Koenig & Bauer (KBA) reports a successful China Print show in Beijing this year. The show was placed under the motto “Origin & Future – 200 Years Koenig & Bauer”, and visitors to the 1,000 m2 stand from China and numerous other countries in the region were treated to a raft of offset, flexo, screen printing and digital solutions for the commercial, publication and packaging markets. Practiceoriented press demonstrations and vivid presentations of products which could not be exhibited directly were undisputed crowd-pullers. similar ceremony for the Rapida 106 on 10th May. The five-colour press which was to be seen in Beijing is now on its way to Liuyang Shuangfu Packaging Printing in Hunan Province.

Walter Zehner, CEO of KBA Greater China, summed up: “It was a very successful show. The interest and sales results far exceeded our expectations.” Dietmar Heyduck, sales director at KBA-Sheetfed, was equally enthusiastic: “KBA-Sheetfed already recorded a very positive business result on the Chinese market in 2016. Our revenue increased by 10 per cent, not least because we placed a clear focus on the growing packaging segment. The aim must now be to maintain the upward momentum of last year, and this successful China Print is definitely an important step in that direction.”

Ralf Sammeck, CEO of KBASheetfed: “Over the past years, KBA

has established a firm reputation as a specialist catering for individual printing needs. Our customers are looking for special or complete solutions – for example for high-quality finishing. The sheetfed offset presses supplied by KBA are becoming longer and longer, and incorporate more and more practice-oriented automation. That is the technology which the market demands. The key to our success is that we concentrate on making our customers successful.”
Rapida 106 handed over to packaging printer
The official hand-over of the Rapida 75 PRO on the stand to its future owner, the Hucai Group, already on the first day of the show was followed up by a

General manager of Hucai, Zhao Bang said: “We will certainly benefit from simultaneous plate changing with DriveTronic SPC. Job changeover times will be shortened dramatically, and the pre-registration facility will also help to reduce waste. Everyone is really excited about the high production speeds and print quality of the Rapida 106. We are pursuing automation to enhance our production efficiency and to reduce labour costs. With this highperformance press, we are continuing the restructuring of our company and will be increasing our production capacity by more than 100 per cent.” The products in greatest demand at the show were medium- and large-format sheetfed presses. Alongside the Rapida 106 for Liuyang Shuangfu Packaging Printing, a further press of this highend series was sold with seven printing units, inline coater and extended delivery. Several buyers opted for the Rapida 105, including two eight-colour coater presses, one of which was also configured with the cold foil module Vinfoil Optima. In large format, KBA lived up to its role as market leader with several new orders, and a number of sales contracts for the Rapida 75 PRO are also close to completion. In total, the orders received matched the figures achieved at Print China two years ago.

Study shows packaging print will promote healthy growth opportunities for machine manufacturers A study conducted by the print and paper technology associations in VDMA and NPES forecasts positive market development in packaging print, with an expected annual sales growth of 5.2 % until 2020 These figures are based on a contemporary study conducted by the VDMA industry association in conjunction with NPES, the US association for printing and publishing technologies, and market researchers from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). “We expect overall sales of 286 billion US dollars in 2020, which represents an increase of 44 billion when compared to the figure for 2015,” said Dr. Markus Heering, managing director of VDMA Print and Paper Technology. This study has also drawn upon market developments in the period from 2011

to 2015. Apart from this, the authors also took a closer look at 26 countries on every continent to support their prognosis. Data is also subdivided into five packaging printing segments: corrugated board, folding cartons, flexible packaging materials, label printing and, as a fifth segment, all other niches, including direct glass and metal printing. Developed markets offer enormous turnover potential “The study indicates that, although growing middle classes and increasing awareness of hygiene in emerging economies have lead to very high growth rates, sales in developed markets

such as the United States, China and the EU increase at a completely different level,” said Dr. Heering. As a result, four-fifths of the growth forecast in sales is expected in the five largest markets (37.6 billion of 44 billion US dollars). The USA, China, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom together accounted for 78 % of all sales in 2015. According to the study, this will increase to 79 % by the end of the decade – with India advancing from sixth to fourth place and forcing the United Kingdom out of the top 5.

Urbanisation, the trend towards smaller, more flexible packaging in terms of precise targeting of groups and differentiation of competition and increasingly decentralised suppler chains are the drivers behind development both there and here. Global brands are also increasingly manufacturing and packaging their products in regional hubs. “In addition to the increasing quality of print on packaging, equipping these hubs offers printing machine engineering equally promising prospects of growth,” Dr. Heering continued. Modern printing technology is the key to a more refined, high-quality appearance and can attract the attention of undecided buyers to products through the use of sophisticated embossing techniques and the interplay

between gloss and matt varnishes and metallic inks. Print on films, labels and folding cartons offers positive chances of growth The market study, which is available free of charge to member of the VDMA Print and Paper Technology industry association and which non-members can obtain through the association as of June 2017, breaks down growth forecasts according to markets and segments. At annual rates of 5.6 %, print on flexible packaging is the most dynamic area, followed by print on folding cartons and printing of labels, as analyses of both indicate that they will each grow by 5.2 % annually. However, as the most mature and, indeed, largest

segment, printing on corrugated board remains on course to continue growing, with the joint study predicting average growth rates of 4.5 % until the end of the decade. Numerous companies which are association members have been rigorously aligning their portfolios for years with this market and supply customers with precision solutions tailored to suit their applications. “This could involve efficient offset systems for cartons, rotogravure and flexographic processes for films, systems for direct printing on glass, metals and many other materials or even highly flexible digital inkjet technology for individualised products and rapidly expanding campaigns,” said Dr Heering. Intensive joint research also means that machine engineers can avail of a broad range of high-quality, food grade printing inks and varnishes today for every process. “We are well prepared to embrace pending growth on a global scale and our research and development continues uninterrupted. That's why I'm sure we'll once again be able to enjoy a broad range of innovations relating to print on packaging at drupa 2020”.

Stamping Nanomaterial onto Flexible Surfaces How do you know if the coffee in your to go mug is ready to drink without trying and maybe burning your lips? Do you have an idea if you can still eat the meat in your fridge even if the expiration date is already exceeded?

Actual there is no practicable answer but nanotubes stamps could bring the solution! Engineers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a stamping process that involves carbon nanotubes which might cost-effectively print electronic ink onto almost any surface – whether rigid or flexible. How do you know if the coffee in your to go mug is ready to drink without trying and maybe burning your lips? Do you have an idea if you can still eat the meat in your fridge even if the expiration date is already exceeded? Actual there is no practicable answer but nanotubes stamps could bring the solution! Engineers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a stamping process that involves carbon nanotubes which might cost-effectively print electronic ink onto almost any surface – whether rigid or flexible. Higher Resolution than Conventional Printing Methods But what is new about this stamping method? In the past there have already been some attempts to print electronic surfaces using inject printing or rubber stamping techniques but the results

have often been fuzzy. Controlling the results gets more difficult the smaller the scale gets. With conventional methods, the ink risked to disperse to places it should not. Further, the conductive ink often cracked a little when been printed on flexible surfaces so that it lost its conductance. To overcome all these challenges the stamps developed by MIT come with a surface covered with nanoscale holes, which enable the ink consisting of nanoparticles uniformly flow onto the surface. The MIT researchers also found out that the key to success is not just the stamp’s nanoporous surface but it also depends on how evenly pressure is applied to them. Designed in this way, the stamp achieves much higher resolution than conventional printing methods. New Techniques Possibilities

Bring

New

The researchers expect that these nano-stamped prints can, for instance, function as a transistor for controlling individual pixels in high-resolution displays. They could also be used as electronic labels or stickers. When it comes to food packaging, they

might show a countdown how long the food inside is still consumable. Another application possibility are windows telling you the day’s weather forecast based on hyper-local weather monitoring. Now, that there is a solution for the technical realization of such small applications in prospect the next challenge is to reduce production costs as much as possible. As soon as the costs for fabrication are low enough it will become more likely to print these applications on disposables like a to go mug or a meat packaging.

50 ROLAND 700 helps Japanese print company to leading position Adapting to long-term changes in pharmaceutical industry, Toyama based print company Taiyo Package Co Ltd recently invested in a new ROLAND 707 LV, with spectacular results. The new machine has enabled Taiyo, long respected as a pharmaceutical print company for both OTC (Over The Counter) and prescription medicine packaging, to adapt to government-led changes in the pharmaceutical industry. Expanding on rationale behind the company’s recent investment, Taiyo President Mr Yukihiro Kusonoki said: “Government cost-cutting recommendations over the past ten years or so have resulted in greater public consumption of over-thecounter medicines. “While Taiyo had always been respected for its efficiency and print quality, the demand for more distinctive, eye-catching printing of OTC products presented us with some challenges. “While printing for premium pharmaceutical packaged products is back on track, our existing 6 unit press could not give us the production efficiency required. “Our new ROLAND 707 LV helps us meet a vast range of substrate and embossing requirements and delivers amazing quality.”

Speaking about his company’s relationship with Manroland Sheetfed, Mr Kusunoki said: “The new press is a great 70th anniversary gift for us. Because of our association with Manroland, our most reliable partner, customers and the market have even more confidence in our company.”

Contiweb unveils rebranding To demonstrate strong market diversification, Contiweb announced the company’s new brand identity, logo and website. The rebrand reflects the evolution of the company into a cutting-edge provider of web offset, web inkjet, label & packaging and finishing products, as well as its vision for the future. Since drupa 2016, under the leadership of new shareholder AIP (American Industrial Partners) Contiweb has been recognised as a standalone brand within the Goss portfolio, due to its strong position in its existing markets. Contiweb’s rebrand reflects the recent diversification of the company, exploring new market segments with a keen eye on the future, and offering more efficient solutions for all print sectors. The new website is located at www.contiweb.com. Contiweb’s rebranding represents its successful and ongoing transition to a company beyond heatset web offset. Today the company is supplying high quality products in several new markets, while maintaining its customer-focused philosophy which is also reflected by a strong focus on product lifetime support with extensive aftermarket offerings. Bert Schoonderbeek, managing director at Contiweb said the rebrand marks a new era for Contiweb and its products: “Contiweb has always been guided by our customers’ needs and suggestions, so we are excited to move forward with new products spanning diverse printing applications which will help them to meet the demands

of the printing industry today. With increasing pressure on lead times and profits, Contiweb offers solutions to improve efficiency and sustainability in all print sectors.” Contiweb, although well known as a supplier of splicers and dryers to the world’s premier web offset printers for some 40 years, started to diversify its product offering back in 2014, developing ancillaries for digital inkjet web production. In collaboration with HP, Contiweb launched a series of unwinder/splicers and rewinders at drupa 2016, which were designed to be entirely modular, providing customers with an easy path to full automation at either end of the press line. In a continued move to diversification, Contiweb engaged in the label and packaging markets, forming a strategic partnership with DG press ServiceS and acquiring the Intellectual property (IP) of the Thallo web offset packaging press in early 2016. The Contiweb Thallo system integrates web offset with flexo, gravure or digital units into hybrid configurations, providing optimal flexibility for a wide range of printing applications. While the brand, logo and website have changed to better represent Contiweb’s position today, their vast understanding of the efficiencies and repeatable high quality for web fed processes remains unique. Ltd. officially opened its doors one year ago in the Chinese market.

During the last months, the new market organisation in China has helped to handle two press installations at two printing facilities in Beijing. A commercial press was recently installed in Beijing, followed by an installation of the new digital finishing system FormerLine. manroland added that there are currently ongoing negotiations on further press projects with Chinese customers. Expanding and establishing a fast and broad service offering is one of the goals of the new market organization. Throughout the first months, several challenging projects could be realized for e.g. press relocations in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, press audit contracts and upgrades and retrofits. According to the company, the strong presence and reliability of the new arm has attracted printers with competitor presses to ask for support. First orders for third party press service have been placed successfully and will soon be introduced to the public. At this year’s China Print, manroland organized an event for customers from all over China to introduce new strategic approaches and business models for the future. In the course of this event, the organization also took the opportunity to have intense discussions and share experiences with its customers. How the Pharmaceutical Industry Benefits from Intelligent Packaging Innovation in packaging technologies is key to success since it offers great opportunities to increase brand identity and customer loyalty. This also applies to the pharmaceutical industry, which is constantly growing: Between 2015 and 2020 the market for pharmaceutical packaging will increase by 8 percent. But still, this sector of the packaging industry, in particular, faces many challenges such as medication intake errors or counterfeit drugs.

53 tags can wirelessly communicate with NFC-enabled smartphones, e. g. to transmit product states such as “factory sealed” or “opened”. Furthermore, the NFC tags can contain unique identifiers for authentication and tracking. Other Applications of Intelligent Packaging But there is more to it than this. Pharmaceutical packaging should also maintain the product’s environment in some cases. If this cannot be guaranteed, the drugs could release chemicals or bacteria. Smart packaging containing chemical or biosensors might display, whether the drugs are unsafe, spoiled or expired.

This is where intelligent packaging comes into play providing several benefits for pharmaceutical packaging. Innovation in packaging technologies is key to success since it offers great opportunities to increase brand identity and customer loyalty. This is where intelligent packaging comes into play providing several benefits for pharmaceutical packaging. How Does the Pharmaceutical Industry Benefit from Smart Packaging Besides their protection and marketing functions, it is highly important that packages for pharmaceutical products provide concerning medicinal ingredients and the interaction of different medications. The following examples show how intelligent packaging can augment these functions. Pharmaceutical Packaging with TimeTemperature Indicators Many medications, which have to be stored at a certain temperature, otherwise they might not only become unusable but also dangerous for the

patient’s health. Thanks to Intelligent packaging it is possible to create labels informing about a product’s temperature during the shipping process and storage so that doctors, pharmacists or patients can determine whether the drugs are safe to take or not. Some time ago we already presented two exemplary solutions in a blog article relying on temperature sensitive intelligent ink and built-in temperature sensors, timers and activation triggers. Pharmaceutical Packaging with NFC Tags It is a matter of common knowledge that nobody really reads information leaflets in drug packages. Additionally, patients are not reliably adhering to prescriptions or forget to take their medicine. Therefore it is even more important that they receive enough information alternatively so that they know they are using the drug as intended. Near-field communication (NFC) could be a smart solution to deliver this information in an interactive way on the patient’s smartphones, for instance via video. A current example for this is the collaboration between Jones Packaging Inc. and Thin Film Electronics ASA. Jones is the first folding carton converter to receive a “Preferred Converter” certification for the integration of Thinfilm’s NFC OpenSense tags in paperboard pharmaceutical packaging. These

54 TCPL comments “TCPL has a successful history of product performance and service support with QuadTech, so we specifically chose QuadTech over other possible suppliers. We are now using additional solutions from the QuadTech product portfolio and they are our supplier of choice for color and inspection technologies”. Mr. Naha continues, “Our most recent investment will continue to ensure quality and dependability is maintained while dramatically reducing waste and above all safeguarding our reputation for packaging excellence.” Jonas Sjöström commented on winning the competition: “This makes me feel very proud, I did not expect to win when I first got on the plane to Hamburg. I entered this competition with the main goal of meeting new people in the industry and sharing thoughts, techniques and perhaps business opportunities. I’ve made friends in all parts of the world, which will hopefully result in some trips in the future, while I also received confirmation that my work is of a high standard.” Head Judge Ole Solskin, from Denmark commented on the quality of the installers involved in the final: “The guys are on a level that we’ve never seen before, they really deserved to be here. They’ve done an outstanding job.” Duncan MacOwan, Head of Events, FESPA comments: “This year’s contestants were really put to the test in the Wrap Masters. Over the fourdays they were tasked with wrapping a variety of objects including Kia cars, race helmets, a Formula 4 race car and a world powerboat Formula 4 raceboat from Team Haugaard, using materials provided by sponsor Hexis and printed by Mimaki. The judges found it extremely difficult to judge this year as the quality of the wrapped objects was so high.” Established relationship and proven performance history TCPL Packaging Limited, one of India’s largest manufacturers of printed folding cartons, has installed their third QuadTech Inspection System to further drive printing

efficiencies as they move to support flexible packaging. In addition to the Inspection System, the order includes Data Central®, PDF verification, Waste Management and Web Viewing Systems—equipping TCPL with a complete defect management workflow. TCPL has a long-standing association with QuadTech, having first deployed QuadTech’ Autotron™ Register Guidance System in 1990. The latest QuadTech technology has been installed to support TCPL’s newest rotogravure press, a Bobst Rotomac 4003, which will enable the company to print tipping papers for the tobacco market, and to print on flexible materials. TCPL, one of the two largest converters of paperboard in India, is already servicing this sector using two existing Rotogravure presses with incorporated QuadTech Inspection Systems, and has seen the benefits the 100 percent technology offers. Mr. Biswadip Naha, Plant Manager,

QuadTech’s complete defect management workflow solution offers printers improved waste reductions and increased savings on returned rolls through detecting defects on virtually any substrate or web width, at any press speed.
