Value for money - Agfa Economy, ecology, extra convenience – or ECO³ in short. These are the key benefits that characterize Agfa Graphics’ next-generation innovations for the printing industry. The focus not only lies on the company’s well-known strong portfolio in the prepress area, yet equally on quality, productivity and efficiency improvements in the pressroom environment. Agfa Graphics wants to show printers how they can get the most value for their money. “ECO³ is short for Ecological, Economic and Extremely Convenient,” says Joan Vermeersch, Vice President Technology, Marketing & Business Development Prepress at Agfa Graphics. “The term ‘eco’ has been used for many years to designate solutions that are environmentally friendly. Yet the other two E’s are just as important to a printer. In the field of offset printing, we focus on transforming technology into sustainable solutions that create value for our customers. The environmental impact of these solutions is an important factor, yet we add total cost of operations and convenience to the equation. Our innovations are always market-driven.”
“We aim to make our entire portfolio ECO³”, states Vermeersch. “We have a long record of accomplishment when it comes to sustainable development. With the introduction of the Azura printing plate in 2004, we pioneered chemistry-free prepress solutions; we are still the industry leader. In the meantime, we also keep improving conventional system so they fit in with the ECO³ framework. Environmental sustainability is embedded as a set of technical requirements in all of our R&D projects for new systems, which are equally valued as quality, performance and cost specifications.”
From prepress to press
What are the flagships of your ECO³ offering? “One of them is the Energy Elite Eco printing plate. It has a best-in-class run length for no-bake positive thermal plates (up to 600,000 copies) and is both mechanically and chemically compatible with today’s needs in sheetfed and heatset applications. Combined with the truly disruptive Arkana smart plate processing technology—with its extremely low replenishment rates and its total elimination of rinse water—waste is reduced by up to 50%. This not only shrinks a printer’s ecological footprint, it also means less transport, less storage space, less handling and less empty bottles. In addition, the clean chemistry of the Energy Elite Eco printing plate used in the system allows for easy and rapid cleaning, and extends bath life up to 15,000 m² of printing plates (3 times more than a conventional system).” Vermeersch adds: “Other illustrations of the ECO³ advantages are the Avalon N8-90 thermal platesetter, achieving ultra-high productivity levels of up to

Graphics’ ECO³ solutions such as Apogee Impose, for instance, can minimize paper waste by calculating smart impositions. A plate like Energy Elite Eco enables a wide press latitude and shows excellent lithographic performance, leading to fast restarts, low dampening levels, and a stable inkwater balance – and therefore time and money savings. The plate also has an outstanding chemical resistance. This means more flexibility in choosing fountains, washes and plate cleaners. Its excellent mechanical robustness means less risk of plate wear issues, remakes and associated costs. Our pressroom consumables, too, add value. These include a.o. blanket and roller washes, fountain additives and auxiliaries that extend the lifetime of printing plates, blankets and rollers, and improve both press uptime and the stability of runs.” 71 B1 plates per hour, but also our innovative cloud solutions. We are the only ones to take printers’ workflows into the cloud, thus allowing companies to minimize their operating costs, while ensuring business continuity and security. Add to this our state-ofthe web-to-print and file management software.” Agfa Graphics’ offering does not stop where the prepress environment ends. How do you make a difference in the pressroom too? “Indeed, a wide range of our solutions yields significant improvement and savings in the pressroom. Software
“Recently, we also released a true printing power combo in the shape of the software packages PressTune and InkTune. They will add value by reducing costs, both in the prepress and press environment, while improving quality and productivity. PressTune is a comprehensive and unique print standardization tool that ensures color matching to specifications and color consistency throughout the press run. Through a trend analysis of production, it allows printers to track, manage and improve press and operator performance. As such, it reduces make-ready time up to 40% and cuts down waste during the print
“Nowhere else do printers get such good value for money. We are committed to providing the highest quality of products and services, and let our customers grow their business in a profitable way. That is why we invest in sustainable innovation with a focus on ecology, economy, and extra convenience – or ECO³. In addition to our cleaner and cost-effective prepress solutions that are easier to operate and maintain, our newly introduced software solutions will see printers profit from enhanced automation and quality management, resulting in an impressive amount of savings, both in the prepress and press environment.”
Joan Vermeersch, Vice President Technology, Marketing & Business Development Prepress at Agfa Graphics. run by 5%. InkTune applies intelligent processes that fine-tune press settings in order to increase the profitability of press operations. It reduces ink consumption by up to 30% while maintaining or even increasing print quality. It also improves color stability on the press, as well as image quality and consistency, and it leads to higher printing speeds and faster drying times. The two software packages work their magic best when combined.”

You promise printing companies added value and cost savings. How do you prove this to them? “We propose printing companies to make a detailed calculation of their potential savings. To this end, we have developed a Value Calculator which compares our offering with competitive systems, including hardware, software, and consumables. In this process, we take a wide range of prepress- and press-related elements into account: water consumption, energy consumption, developer or gum use, labor costs, maintenance costs, waste disposal costs, amount of plate remakes, first sellable sheet etc. Our Value Calculator generates a detailed, fact-based report that summarizes – both in volumes and in money – what is the potential gain for a customer.” Discover how you can save money on www.eco3.graphics.

Taipei-based K-Lin chooses Xeikon 9800s for first foray into digital book printing Thorough market review revealed Xeikon delivers best quality for long-tail book printing Xeikon announced that K-Lin, a leading Taipei book printer specializing in high quality culinary, travel and educational books, has chosen to install three Xeikon 9800 digital webfed presses to support its first foray into digital printing. The company has also added a top-of-the-line inline Muller Martini book binding system which accepts direct roll feeding from the Xeikon presses. This combination makes it the most advanced printer of books in Taiwan. “We thoroughly reviewed both inkjet and toner digital presses from all of the top manufacturers during our decision process,” said Mr.Tsai, K-Lin’s owner. “We needed to ensure we could produce the very high quality our publishers expect, in line with offset production, and Xeikon came out at the head of the pack with good reproduction capabilities, including the

fine details that are a signature part of many of the books we publish.” Mr.Tsai states that the company would still continue to print most first edition books using offset, but added: “For second and third editions, and for smaller quantities of specialized titles or books on demand, digital printing is ideal. We expect our Xeikon presses to be a key to our ability to profitably tackle what has been a challenge in the past. In addition, by adding inline book binding, we no longer need to outsource the binding of these shorter
“We also needed a digital press that could print on almost any substrate. We can rarely make the decision about which paper stock will be used as this is defined by the publishers. Our Xeikon 9800s allow us to print on papers ranging from 60 to 360 gsm with the option for inline varnish, enabling us to digitally print covers as well.” The Xeikon 9800 digital press is a high productivity single-pass duplex web-fed digital printing press that prints at 1200 dpi. It is part of a total solution that includes toner, print media, binding equipment and the Xeikon X-800 digital front-end, all working as an integrated digital book printing factory. It offers a fifth colour station that can be used for special toners, including spot colours and UV reflecting clear toner. The Xeikon 9800 prints at up to 21 meters per minute on web widths ranging from 320 to 512 mm. “It has been a pleasure working with the talented staff at K-Lin as they add digital printing to their platform,” concluded Bent Serritslev, general manager, Xeikon Asia Pacific. “The company has mastered the ability to seamlessly direct print projects to offset and/or digital, and its publisher clients are delighted with its ability to cost-effectively produce smaller lots of books within a short cycle time, with no compromise in quality. It is a win/ win strategy.”

Health & beauty label printing? This is how it’s done
By Filip Weymans, VP Global Marketing
Not one label is the same - different applications require different digital technology, which is precisely why printing is such an exciting business. Whether it is for pharma, wine & spirits, durables, health & beauty, industrial chemicals or beverages, every label comes with its own aesthetic and functional requirements.
This issue we focus on health & beauty labels, a group of products with very specific requirements in terms of substrates and white opacity level. Cosmetics, fragrances and makeup labels are mainly produced with synthetic substrates (white or clear, BoPP or PE). They must be resistant
to humidity, contain sufficient levels of white opacity for the clear labels and look stunning on the shelf.
ultimately comes down to the desired image quality the brand owner expects. Let’s take a closer look.
Image quality drives the choice At Xeikon, we did an in-depth analysis of different digital label printing technologies and looked at the technical characteristics of each technology. Based on this report, Xeikon recommends two technologies for printing health & beauty labels: dry toner and UV inkjet. The choice
Substrates Two factors determine if a printing technology is suitable for a certain substrate: adhesion (if and how well the printed image stays fixed to the substrate) and pigment penetration (if and how well the ink or toner penetrates the substrate). For health & beauty labels, adhesion should be high,

White opacity of cosmetic labels For health & beauty labels, a sufficient level of white opacity is required. The opacity of a color is determined by the concentration of pigments and pigment particle size. Dry toner scores well on both accounts. White dry toner combines the highest pigment load with the largest particle size, offering white layers of an opacity that is generally higher than that of flexo white, in a single pass.
while pigment penetration should be avoided at all cost. Synthetic substrates are most common for cosmetic labels. Due to its chemical affinity dry toner is a great choice as
it can be used without any coating or primer. UV-curable inkjet requires a corona treatment to ensure a high enough surface tension and proper spread of the UV inkjet ink.
For UV-curable inks used in single-pass high-frequency jetting systems, the pigment particle size should be small enough to avoid nozzle clogging. Also, the required viscosity of the inks does limit the maximum possible pigment load. However, inkjet inks are capable of achieving an opacity comparable to that of screen printing, provided

17 the print head features a low native resolution, producing a large-sized droplet, which is a disadvantage for design elements other than solids, and at potentially lower printing speeds. Look and feel of cosmetic labels Dry toner gives a matte impression which, by applying a varnish, can give a glossy impression. When fine image details (offset look) are required this technology is preferred. UV inkjet gives a very high gloss and tactile impression, which can appeal to certain people. The image details are not as sharp as dry toner but this is not necessarily a requirement. The appearance of both technologies is not influenced when the labels get in touch with the water (condense) on the outside of the bottle.

Achieves latest ISO 12647-2:2013 Certification Worldwide Printing Solutions has come a long way since its inception as a ‘hub and spoke’ printing franchise in 1994. In July 2010, the Worldwide name and franchise was acquired by long-established Perth Printer Crystal Print, which now trades under the Worldwide name and services a national network of over forty Worldwidebranded franchisees.
Worldwide’s Arnold Whiteside with his Heidelberg XL 75-5+L
The Cannington, WA hub covers over 4,000 square metres and is one of the largest printing facilities in Western Australia. It is also one of the most energy-efficient and carbon-neutral print sites, featuring a roof festooned with solar panels, plus more on the ground. Together, they generate over 2.4 gigawatts of clean energy each day and account for approximately 25% of Worldwide Cannington’s energy needs. Being carbon-neutral is also important at Worldwide. While the ultimate aim is to capture 100% of all fugitive emissions, the inevitable small amount of CO2 that does escape is offset by the purchase of carbon credits in line with the Carbon Reduction Institute’s criteria. “Being Green and socially responsible is in our culture,” says Managing Director Arnold Whiteside. Colour of highest importance Also firmly embedded in Worldwide Cannington’s culture is colour excellence, this being assured by
Prepress Manager Laurie Kennedy, checking a proof using the new Techkon SpecroDens
completing Mellow Colour ISO 126472 Proficient Printer certification for its offset workflow and main production press, a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL75 - 5 colour plus coater. Recently, Worldwide became one of the first printers in Australia to move up to the latest ISO 12647-2:2013 standard. David Crowther of Colour Graphic Services conducted the training and auditing and supplied a new M1compliant Techkon SpectroDens instrument for measurement. He explains: “As with previous versions, ISO 12647-2:2013 enables us to ‘calibrate’ an offset press to print within the tolerances of the target values for colour (primaries, CMYK and overprints RGB and 3 colour) and TVI (tone value increase, or dot gain). Worldwide Cannington has achieved excellent results and consistency and, in turn, these benefits are passed on to the many Worldwide franchise outlets across the country who use them as their offset hub.” Crowther continues: “Although announced in 2013, the new standard has taken a while to become
implemented effectively as uptake of the M1-mode spectrophotometers, new ICC profiles and characterization data sets have taken a while to filter down to real-world production. The increased use of optical brighteners by paper manufacturers is, however, making adoption of the 2013 standard more necessary for larger print groups who service leading brand customers and used ‘ganged-up’ printing, such as Worldwide.” Arnold Whiteside comments “If we are to maintain our leading position as a trusted print service provider to our 35,000 customers, we had little choice but to upgrade to the latest ISO colour standard. It has proven very satisfying, hitting the right colour every time and with very little waste along the way.” Crowther concludes: “I’d like to congratulate Arnold and his team at Worldwide for their diligence and attention to detail. Once established, maintaining high colour standards is not always easy but in achieving ISO 12647-2:2013, Worldwide is leading the way.”

Paper & cardboard packaging comes out on top In the midst of heated discussions about packaging, avoidable plastic waste and a move towards a circular economy, a snap poll, conducted by Two Sides and international research agency Toluna, has revealed a strong preference for paper & cardboard packaging A nationally-representative survey of 500 adults found paper & cardboard to be the most preferred packaging material for environmental-friendliness, recyclability and practicality. Respondents were asked which packaging material (glass, metal, paper & cardboard, or plastic) they prefer based on a number of different reasons. Paper & cardboard received the highest score for being; better for the environment and easier to recycle and, in terms of practicality, easier to open and close, easier to store, lighter weight, more practical, and safer to use.
Consumers also appreciate paper & cardboard packaging’s unique environmental qualities: • 78% like paper & cardboard packaging because it is biodegradable • 73% believe paper & cardboard packaging makes good use of recycled materials • 64% like paper & cardboard packaging because it is made from renewable wood fibre Martyn Eustace, Managing Director of Two Sides, says; “In the current packaging climate, it is great to see paper & cardboard packaging recognised by consumers for its excellent environmental attributes. Not only does paper & cardboard packaging have an exceptionally high utilisation rate of recycled fibres, it is also the most recycled packaging material in Europe, at 83%. Consumers can also be confident knowing that European forests, which provide much of the virgin fibre used for making paper & cardboard packaging, have grown by an area the size of Switzerland in just 10 years – that’s equivalent to over 1,500 football pitches every day!”
The survey also revealed significant consumer concerns about packaging in general. 85% believe packaging is a significant source of litter, 84% believe over-packaging is a problem, and 71% believe packaging is bad for the environment. Coffee cups, plastic bottles, chocolate bar wrappers, crisp packets and take-away packaging were all perceived to be the most significant causes litter. Paper & cardboard packaging is durable, renewable and recyclable and will be an essential material as we move towards a regenerative, circular economy, as outlined in the UK Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan.

Packaging printer in for high automation - Completely new packaging facility in Dammam - Productive Koenig & Bauer technology to drive further growth - Vision: Automatic substrate logistics from the stores to product shipping It is not often that printing and packaging companies build a completely new production facility. But Noor Carton, a packaging producer from Dammam in Saudi Arabia, is one of those rare cases. The company erected its new plant in 2015 and has since been producing on two high-performance Rapida 106 coater presses, one with five colours, the other with six colours. Noor Carton is a member of the Salman Group, which operates not only printing plants serving the commercial and flexo segments, but also companies for medical and IT products. In each of its fields of activity, the group views itself as a solution provider and organises its competencies and

capacities accordingly. To this end, the individual business units are committed to continuous process improvement and the integration of cutting-edge technologies. In packaging printing, many of the leading global print buyers are represented on the list of Noor Carton customers. When looking for the ideal partner with regard to offset technology, the Noor Carton management formulated clear demands to be met by press manufacturers: The best available technology paired with the best advice and service. Baker Al Nasser, general manager of the Salman Group: “There are many presses which deliver good and saleable quality. And we ourselves grew with other presses until 2014. But the reality on the market is today unfortunately different to a few years ago. Today, it is imperative for us to use only the most productive presses with the highest levels of technical availability. That is the only way to grow further. In this connection, the Rapida series leaves no technical wishes unanswered. Furthermore, Koenig & Bauer and Kharafi convinced us with the best advice and service concept.” Noureddine Amalou, MENA sales manager at Koenig & Bauer: “It is an exciting challenge to plan a printing plant from scratch. For the Saudi Arabian market and for the target group of Noor Carton, productivity and integration were essential aspects. Many very long repeat jobs are printed,
which is why all the presses are configured with automatic non-stop pile changing and extended logistics. The vision is to automate board transport from the stores, via the printing press and die-cutting machine, through to shipping to the customer. This is an innovative solution which is unique in the MENA region, based on the models of existing Koenig & Bauer partners in Europe. After all, labour costs are also increasing dramatically in the Middle East and must thus be taken into account in major investment projects.” The printers at Noor Carton are today full of praise for the ease of operation of their two Rapidas: “The new

First ROLAND 706 EVOLUTION installed in Kazakhstan In September "Intellservice" a printing house in Kazakhstan opened its doors to printing industry. The installation and production startup of the new high-performance printing machine was a momentous event, generating lots of interest. Intellservice started business in 1991 to produce different kinds of printing products for the advertising arena. During the last years, “Intellservice” became one of the biggest and most prominent printers in the region and specialized in the production of metallized card-board packaging, chrome cardboard packaging, matted corrugated cardboard packaging, books, magazines, commercial printing, calendars and many more. “Intellservice” also initiated differentand complicated printing projects in the area of packaging and label printing on a high quality level. The new ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION meets the targets set for the “IntellService” production team by the company's management, and is an important step in the implementation of a comprehensive development plan. The Machine is mounted on a pedestal, has a special enlarged format of 790
x 1050 mm and offers lots of new possibilities. The machine is equipped with an automatic sheet inspection system (the ROLAND InlineInspector 2.0) with electronic masking (Quality Mask) and comparison with PDF-files, that ensures highly efficient assessment of the quality of the printed products. The production potential of printing presses is constantly growing due to the increase in the maximum printing speed and ever increasing number of printing sections on one press. Simultaneously with these conditions there is a growth of the responsibility of the printer for the correctly printed order, for the lack of color variations of the impressions throughout the whole run. One of the criteria for getting a positive result for potential customers in this situation is the use of a sheet inspection system with automatic error detection on the printing presses. The main advantages of the ROLAND InlineInspector 2.0
are: two times increased resolution of the cameras for sheet inspection; comparison of the printed sheet with the original pdf-file; electronic masking and time saving for the transfer of the order data. The customer’s PDF file is uploaded in the printing press control panel computer. The Subscription sheet is compared with the PDF image. The differences between the subscription sheet and the PDF are evaluated by the printer and/or the customer and are marked as "acceptable" or as "unacceptable". During printing, each printed sheet of the run is compared with the subscription sheet. ROLAND InlineInspector is an excellent marketing tool for the sales team of the printing house. The tool reduces the waste, ensures total quality control (color variation, hickeys, scratches, etc.), eliminates the rate of complaints, reduces the number of waste and saves operation time for the necessary actions during the work of the printer. It is also a tool for the optimization of the control criteria by means of establishing of a mask, or masks of the control areas and control level. The ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION was launched by Manroland Sheetfed at DRUPA-2016 and today the press is the “flag-ship” of the company.. The machine has attracted the attention of printers from all over the world since it embodies many technological developments designed to provide printers with unprecedented conditions for efficient, productive, reliable and high-quality work.

Bring Your Wine Labels to Life With Augmented Reality Augmented reality is an exciting technology that will now give wine lovers a new experience of drinking wine. Companies have begun to attract the attention of the customers in various ways, because the market is overfilled and you as a company have to stand out. They use colorful and shrill labels to get this. Furthermore we’ve come across all interesting examples for the use of augmented reality in packaging. The Australian wine brand 19 Crimes, for example, collaborates with creative technology company Tactic and J. Walter Thompson SF to bring the wine labels to life with the help of augmented reality. With a special app, the stories of each bottle become real by animating the labels’ photographs and prompting characters to tell the unique stories behind the labels. H1: Augmented Reality Brings New Experiences in Your Wine Cupboard The app is available for free via the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The augmented und virtual reality agency Tactic und the marketing communications agency J. Walter Thompson SF have cooperated to get the 19 Crimes brand to life. With the app, users can experience the history of the founding of Australia as an English penal colony. Wine lovers, therefore, will not just have the opportunity to
taste the delicious wine but will also be emotionally entangled with the product. The Story on the Bottle The persona-driven wine brand is inspired by the true tales of British criminals accused of 19 specific crimes, which, starting in the late 1700s, were punishable by “transportation” or relocation to the new penal colony known as Australia. It celebrates the rebellious spirit of the more than 160,000 exiled men and women, the rule breakers and law defying citizens that forged a new culture and national spirit in Australia. Each bottle displays the mugshot of an actual person sentenced to make the treacherous trek to the unknown land. To bring the characters to life, you have to hover a mobile device over the bottles. People like John O’Reilly who recounts finding
love after avoiding the hangman’s noose, James Wilson who shares his tale of triumph after a conviction for treason, or Jane Castings who admits to her crimes of thievery, sharing their stories of rule breaking that sent them across the ocean to Australia. By the way, Jane Castings is depicted on the label of 19 Crimes’ first and newly available white wine, Hard Chard. Is it a hazard that the only woman is on the white wine bottle? Augmented reality is an exciting technology that will give wine lovers a new experience of drinking wine. And not only in this case it is an awesome tool that gives you special experiences with different products. I’m curious about where the exciting expansions of experience will meet me next. Whose story would you like to see on the label?

New HD printing technology launced Avalanche HD6 and Avalanche HDK give a competitive edge to garment decorators with drastically reduced cost per print, high-definition image quality, improved hand feel and new software for advanced file preparation capabilitie Kornit Digital, (NASDAQ: KRNT), a global market leader in digital textile printing innovation, has announced the introduction of a new HD printing technology for its Avalanche platform of direct-to-garment printing systems. The Avalanche HD6, the successor of the Avalanche Hexa, is equipped with Kornit’s HD print engine and NeoPigmentTM Rapid ink, which leads to significant reductions in ink consumption – and therefore cost per print – in comparison to the company’s existing Avalanche systems. The HD6 will reduce the ink consumption by up to 30% compared to the current “R-Series” version and up to 46% compared to the previous Non R-Series versions of the Avalanche Hexa. In addition, Kornit is launching an HD version of the Avalanche 1000 which will be called Avalanche HDK. The company also announced that existing Kornit customers now have an upgrade path for their Avalanche Hexa and Avalanche 1000 systems. The new systems are the result of Kornit’s experience gained from 15 years of direct-to-garment printing innovation and a very large installed base of systems. The new cost per print levels make the new HD systems an attractive choice for screen printers for print runs between one and 500 copies. The new systems are running with 4l bulk ink containers of Kornit’s NeoPigmentTM Rapid ink. This ink, which has been specifically developed for Kornit’s HD technology, offers an improved gamut for spot and brand color matching, increased opacity and saturation of the white ink, as well as improved hand feel – an important requirement by screen printers. The
print quality is further enhanced by ColorGATE’s Professional RIP solution, adding advanced color management and screening capabilities, improved white base creation and predefined color libraries for ultimate color matching. Both the HD print engine and the NeoPigment Rapid ink are used in Kornit’s Vulcan system and have been field proven in a number of installations over the past year. Omer Kulka, Kornit Digital’s Vice President of Marketing and Product Strategy, comments, “Today’s market trends put traditional screen printing service providers under pressure given increased demand for short run production with frequent inventory cycles, coupled with the online and direct-to-customer business models, the demand for personalized garments, and demand for shorter delivery times. Added to these trends is the current retail meltdown which particularly impacts fashion and apparel outlets. Kornit’s HD technology, based on our 15 years of digital textile printing experience, provides an excellent
and profitable alternative for print runs of one to 500 pieces with quick turnaround times.” Kornit’s Avalanche platform represents the high productivity segment of Kornit’s industrial direct-to-garment printing product family, providing customers with a multitude of system options for different application requirements. The Kornit Avalanche HD6 includes six color channels (CMYK, Red, Green) plus white, for a wider gamut and improved spot color matching. Users can easily reproduce the true colors of licensed sports teams and accurately match corporate logos with fiery reds, warm yellows, deep blues and greens, vivid purples and many more. Designed for the mass production of garments, Kornit’s Avalanche HD6 includes a patented architecture of dual bridge and dual pallet, designed to achieve optimal performance in an industrial production environment, and is a very robust platform designed for heavy duty use. The system operates at high speeds and provides excellent print quality.

Inkjet Printing Opens up New Possibilities for Circuit Production Researchers from MSU have succeeded in printing the world’s first stretchable integrated circuit with an inkjet printer.
Mass Production Yet to Come One could certainly read both stories as a sign for a soon-to-come mass production of inkjet-printed electronics. After all, the materials can be produced on a standard printer which is not expensive to manufacture. As Wang puts it: “We can conceivably make the costs of producing flexible electronics comparable to the costs of printing newspapers.” But he and his team want to take the next step first: printing the circuit and the OLED at once, i.e. combining them into a working pixel. After overcoming this hurdle, their smart fabric could find its way into commercialization.
Inkjet-Printed Tablet of the Future is Stretchable Do you have a think, how many bags do you carry around on an average working day? For many people it counts up to four quickly: A handbag, lunch bags for themselves and their kids and last but not least their laptop bag. Chuan Wang, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MSU, and his team might take at least the weight of the last one off people’s shoulders sometime soon – literally speaking – as they invented the first stretchable integrated circuit printed with an inkjet printer.
Research Revolving Enormous Potential MSU’s detection is one in a row of findings researchers have recently come up with around circuit inkjet printing. All components – the elastic ground material, the circuit itself, and the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) – are printed from electronic inks, they themselves consisting of dissolved nanomaterials and organic compounds. The case of Waseda Universityconstitutes another example. They managed to inkjet-print electronic wiring onto a self-adhesive film instead of paper, hitting a milestone in the field of electronic tattoos people would just put on their skin.
“We have created a new technology that is not yet available, says Wang. “And we have taken it one big step beyond the flexible screens that are about to become commercially available.” Until then, we are left dreaming of stretchable mini smart tablets, or wallpapers transforming an entire wall into a huge screen. Looking at the high speed in which inventions pop up, could you imagine having printing electronics in your own home? We are looking forward to your comment next to this blog post.

attended last year. We have also moved this event to an annual schedule. This is in an effort to provide ongoing education, information about industry trends, and inspiration to packaging converters, printers, brands and designers alike.”
“Our goal with the Xeikon Café is to provide an industry educational venue that is as agnostic and neutral as possible as it explores the future of digital production. We want it to benefit the industry at large, helping people understand the new opportunities digital production can bring to their businesses, and inspiring them to achieve new heights,” explains Danny Mertens of Xeikon Café. “This year’s focus is again on packaging innovations, and we hope to attract even more visitors than the 1.000 who
The newly introduced Academy will provide a technical, educational forum centred around innovative end-use applications and packaging decoration techniques. “By introducing the Xeikon Café Academy, we are taking the technical element of the event to the next level. The goal is to guide visitors towards transforming their businesses for a successful future,” comments Mertens. “We are driven by the desire to help participants make the most of the fantastic technology that is available in the market and to
discover ways in which they can use it to their best advantage.” The Academy will be a mix of workshops and presentations. The interactive workshops will be designed to help attendees acquire knowledge and make the right decisions for their businesses. Going beyond product specifications, the workshops will cover topics related to Food Safety, Automation, Exploring the Creativity of Digital, Saving on Cost and Print Technologies. The presentations in the Academy will focus on the main packaging decoration techniques available today, while covering all aspects of digital production – from workflow, print media and print engines to consumables and finishing equipment. Attendees can choose from a range of topics, including self-adhesive, heat transfer, wet-glue, flexible packaging, among others, and attend the sessions most relevant for their business. Each presentation is concluded with a technology demonstration in the exhibition area of the Xeikon Café, making it highly practical and hands-on. Next to the Academy, Xeikon Café 2018 will again feature general Conference sessions with strategic keynotes speakers that will provide inspiration and education designed to help attendees move their business forward. In many cases, these presentations will involve brand owners who will speak at a high level about how they are implementing some of the 40 end-use applications demonstrated in the exhibition area. Lastly, this year’s event will include a social event on the second evening, March 21st. This informal get-together will give attendees the opportunity to meet the speakers and fellow visitors, review the day’s activities and discuss ideas and issues in a more relaxed setting. In short, an ideal opportunity to meet new industry colleagues, and reconnect with old ones. “We strive to make Xeikon Café 2018 a top-class networking and educational industry event. We want attendees to learn, discover new applications that can benefit their businesses and their customers, and network with peers. By combining the technology-focused sessions in the Academy, the strategic

Pantone Unveils Colour of the Year 2018: Ultra Violet Pantone has announced PANTONE 18-3838, Ultra Violet, as the Pantone Color of the Year for 2018. PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet is described as a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade that communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future. “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone
cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own. Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolises experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets. Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The colour is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energises the communities that gather there and inspire connection.

“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” added Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.
“As individuals around the world become more fascinated with colour and realise its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use colour to inspire and influence. The Color of the Year is one moment in time that provides strategic direction for the world of trend and design, reflecting the Pantone Color Institute’s year-round work doing the same for designers and brands.” Ultra Violet in Graphic Design and Packaging As packaging design becomes more sophisticated, Ultra Violet offers complexity and nuance that appeals to our desire for originality in all that we touch. Similarly, in graphic design, Ultra Violet resonates with this dynamic medium through its multi-dimensional feeling. includes the latest Automation Engine prepress workflow as well as the latest screening technology for flexo printing. It will enable Amjet Shanghai to focus on the highest definition flexo production technology for flexible packaging and labels. With the new solution, Amjet Shanghai, a repeated winner of the FTA Award in the United States, aims to combine greater prepress workflow and the highest quality screening technology to improve efficiency and to enhance the quality of its packaging and printing Precise Crystal control The new and unique CDI Crystal XPS is a digitally-controlled exposure unit supporting all photopolymer flexo plates. The combined solution reduces five manual steps in the traditional platemaking process to just one step. The platemaking device integrates with the entire prepress workflow, including Device Manager, to optimally control the output of plates. Plates are placed onto the glass surface, where very accurate back and main exposures - by patented LED UV light technology that allows very precise control - are conducted simultaneously. The consistent light source and nearly concurrent back and main exposure deliver unmatched relief and image consistency combined with perfectly formed flat-top dots. As a result, these plates deliver the highest level of consistency and quality on press. One of the primary factors influencing plate stability is UV exposure. It has also been proven that the shorter the time (dwell) between main exposure and back exposure, the finer the detail,
such as highlight dots, tiny linework, and text, can be held on the plate. The CDI Crystal XPS completes these exposures nearly simultaneously, providing the absolute highest quality dot and fine elements. Automation Engine manages Flexo Platemaking Automation Engine enables a fullyautomated platemaking workflow, from ripped files all the way to the exposed plate on the CDI Crystal XPS, without operator intervention. With Device Manager, anyone that needs to know what the status of a job is, can check from the comfort of their desks. Jobs can quickly and easily be placed in queues, and queues can be modified as needed. This automation not only saves valuable operator time, but also time in the platemaking process to help meet customer customer demand. Geert de Proost, Director Solutions

to consistently achieve the most stringent customer color requirements, efficiently and cost effectively. PANTONE Certified Printer Program requires annual recertification to ensure continued performance at peak levels. “Our goal was to establish a more stringent color management program, expanding beyond visual evaluation to using instruments and digital standards,” said Mikael Svennas, Pyroll Packages’ CEO. “The PANTONE Certified Printer process was very thorough, and we learned a great deal. In addition to the process improvements we will achieve as a result of the audit, we will also be able to leverage Pantone’s brand recognition adding even more credibility to our market position.” Flexolahti Oy, an active member of the Finnish Flexographic Association, has raised awareness in Finland about the value of X-Rite solutions as a solid foundation for color management standardization. “We’ve seen X-Rite and Pantone solutions become the de facto standard in Finland with great results,” commented Kai Tornikoski, Managing Director. “We were pleased to work with X-Rite color experts to help Pyroll achieve this prestigious status and to further elevate awareness of the importance of a formalized color management program. In an environment where supply chains are complex, deadlines are tight, and errors and rework are not acceptable, PANTONE Certified Printer status gives Pyroll’s customers peace of mind that their packages will be produced as expected, giving them faster time to market and improved shelf appeal.” To boost its overall performance and meet certification criteria, Pyroll has added the following X-Rite products to the Joensuu site:

Uncoated fresh fibre liner expands the Sappi line for corrugated board applications Sappi expands its container board product range and with Fusion Uncoated, offers an uncoated fresh fibre liner in the corrugated board market. With the development of Sappi’s Fusion Uncoated, a fully bleached fresh fibre liner, the specialist paper manufacturer is continuing to expand its product offering for the high-volume corrugated board market. Fusion Uncoated is based on the paper concept for the already very successful Fusion Topliner. In contrast to the double-coated Fusion Topliner, Fusion Uncoated has a natural, uncoated surface. Ideal applications include corrugated board and carton packaging, requiring a high white appearance for the topliner, inner liner and fluting. "Sappi's core expertise lies in the production of fresh fibre papers,” says Bernd Gelder, Product Group Manager for Containerboard at Sappi. “This makes the development of Fusion Uncoated a logical next step in our ambition to create an ever more appealing container board portfolio. We can now offer an uncoated surface with a natural look for the premium corrugated board sector. Fusion Uncoated is wood-free and impresses with its high whiteness and strength values."
Fusion Uncoated is approved for direct food contact and is recommended for use when branded product manufacturers, designers and corrugated board processors are seeking an alternative to brown liner papers. These applications include inner packaging such as white corrugated board inserts for highend perfume boxes as well as food packaging. These often-unprinted cartons present a luxury surface finish thanks to their high level of whiteness. Other application’s include display and shelf-ready packaging, for which uncoated paper finishes are often the preferred option. Fusion Uncoated is produced at the Sappi plant in Stockstadt, which has many years of experience in the manufacture of uncoated papers. Currently there are seven weights available, from 70 to 130 g/m2,in sheet and roll formats. As with Fusion Topliner, the low weights meet the rising demand for weight savings with corrugated board packaging. Also, as a special requirements for food packaging, another version of this liner has recently been developed, without the addition of optical brighteners and is offered under the name Fusion Uncoated OF. Both Fusion Uncoated and Uncoated OF feature excellent printability with offset, flexo, screen and digital printing.
