THE DIGITAL CORRUGATED PACKAGING REVOLUTION The HP PageWide Web Press T1100S joins the line of HP digital packaging solutions, set to transform the market for high volume, high speed corrugated packaging printing. By Sha Jumari.

Management/General the next few years,” said Nick Price, Packaging Segment Manager for Asia Pacific, HP. “Japan and South Korea are also driving that growth with manufacturing hotspots in South East Asia too,” Price observed.

Parallel to drupa 2016, HP gave customers a first glimpse of the new HP PageWide Web Press T1100S, held at an event at the KBA facilities in Wurzburg, Germany. Some 100 corrugated packaging converters from all over the world, including Asia Pacific, were invited for the VIP viewing, held over two days in June 2016 The press is a result of collaboration between HP and KBA-Digital & Web. This collaboration was announced in September 2014 and combines the innovation of HP digital printing technology with KBA’s many years of experience in industrial printing machinery. This partnership came about to fill the unaddressed need for high-volume digital printing in the corrugated space. Within two years, and just in time for drupa 2016, the full solution is already being installed at some of the largest global corrugated converters, with a fully operational demo unit being showcased at this event. The press was on full display for the first time, printing in colour at fullspeed, over 180m per minute. The press is a 2.8 metre wide simplex inkjet web-press, mainly for the pre-print corrugated packaging, however users are also seeing opportunities for other web-fed packaging applications. As well as customisation and personalisation that is synonymous with HP digital printing (think of the various Coca-Cola campaigns), corrugators are now able to combine many individual jobs together on a roll or across the web for short, mid or long runs with very fast turnaround times.

The HP PageWide T1100S press on display at the KBA site was on schedule for installation at DS Smith, slated for August this year. The UK packaging group has committed to be the first company to run the new press. Corrugated Packaging Industry in Asia Pacific Digital printing is the fastest growing print process in the packaging segment with a projected annual growth rate of 17% and is expected to be worth $19 billion by 2019. Within this segment the Asa Pacific region will contribute a substantial proportion of the growth. “The corrugated market in Asia Pacific, as part of the overall packaging market, is growing double digit year on year. This is mainly driven by China, which is forecast to contribute up to 60% of the global corrugated growth over

The first markets targeted for the HP PageWide Web Press T1100S press are Japan, Korea, Australia and China. Price asserted however, that there has been a lot of interest from many larger converters across the region. In the past, there really hasn’t been a digital solution to cover these large volumes. With the HP PageWide Web Press T1100S, for the first time, we are able to produce cost-effective corrugated work on pre-print liner effectively, while surpassing the quality of conventional flexo,” said Price. Changing the Corrugated Game Converters that deal with high volume corrugated packaging are required to accommodate even faster turnarounds and shorter run lengths today. Brands are demanding high-quality customized products, and they want them faster, to compete in a more dynamic market. “The key driver for these huge multimillion dollar corrugated printers is to increase efficiency. Nick Price, Packaging Segment Manager for Asia Pacific, HP.

Web Press T1100S introduces three main benefits to dramatically transform the production of corrugated packaging: speed-to-market, cost reduction and job flexibility,” said Price. The press is able to deliver higher throughput compared to traditional analogue technologies by eliminating much of the setup process. Capable of printing up to 30,600 square metres per hour means that packaging manufacturers can now quickly take on new, complex jobs at speed. With the high level of productivity, it can also be implemented economically for large runs. “Basically, we have a very fast, costeffective solution that goes from approved artwork file, directly to print. Technically, you can print a ready-file immediately on a HP PageWide Web Press T1100S, this radically speeds up the turnaround time,” Price continued. According to Price, one of the most significant ways the press immediately reduces cost is in the dramatic reduction of the pre-press process. Production artwork, pre-press, plates and makeready come with a hefty cost. On top of the initial cost, the expensive plates and cylinders need storing and can get damaged, resulting in a lot of added cost and waste. Going digital removes many of these cost variables and risk for error that comes with conventional pre-press. Job flexibility is enhanced with the Multi-lane Print Architecture (MLPA). This feature allows for the web to split into multiple print lanes during production so that different jobs, with

varying box sizes and run lengths can be printed next to one another. Multiple ultra-short or short runs in varying formats can be queued and printed together, with no make-ready or press stops in between jobs, while a long run is printed in another lane. “Rather than having to stop printing one job and then preparing the next file, many different jobs can be produced on one web. It is a lot more cost-effective and flexible to do that if the job sizes and finishing workflow allows. The HP PageWide Web Press T1100S, is equipped with improved priming options, including a combination of HP Bonding Agent, HP Priming Agent and four-colour HP A50 aqueous pigmented CMYK inks. Users will be able to print in a high quality on standard uncoated and coated liners from 80 to 400 gsm. Each box produced can be customized and even personalized, every pixel can be different. Variable data also allows for unique serial numbers, use-by dates, QR codes to be included with ease, whereby these would normally be added with a secondary. Price explained. High colour saturation, dark black optical density and crisp text along with in-line and near-line coating solutions for HP Priming Agent and aqueous overprint varnishing also help optimise print quality. In cooperation with KBA, HP offers a range of equipment and automation options for the press. These include primer and varnish coating solutions, automatic reel change as well as the KBA PATRAS fully automated paper logistics system.

HP embarked into the corrugated packaging market in 2014, when it announced its first web-press offering for this market: the HP PageWide Web Press T400S Simplex Color Inkjet Web Press. The HP PageWide Web Press T1100S was launched late 2015. Designed for high-speed mass production, the HP PageWide Web Press T400S and HP PageWide Web Press T1100S series make up HP’s digital corrugated pre-print solutions. The HP PageWide Web Press T400S Series of presses maintain the same printing technology but on a narrower print web of just over 1m, with variants adapted for both Packaging and Publishing applications. It is suitable for many companies, but where the HP PageWide Web Press T1100S really comes into play is for those companies producing large boxes at higher volumes", explained Price. The printing speeds far outstrip any other digital packaging solution today. The product positioning of the preprint portfolio is very clear. The press joins HP Scitex sheet-fed corrugated solutions, which are flatbed machines for lower productivity and very high quality printing, ideal for POS stands or mockups on thick substrates. drupa was the launchpad for the new HP PageWide C500 press, which fills the space for a robust and flexible industrial post-print corrugated packaging solution. With this launch, HP becomes the only company to have the most complete digital printing offering in the corrugated packaging market. “The addition of corrugated presses is really going to boost the presence in the digital print market, where there has been no dominant digital solution . HP is the first company to really have a high-volume, high-quality preprint corrugated press at such a size. We are very proud to see such an innovative joint R&D project come to market at such an opportune time here at drupa.

Inaugural ORIS Flex Pack Awards Winners Announced In the lead-up to drupa, CGS Publishing Technologies organised its first ORIS Flex Pack Awards with resounding success

The aim of the competition is to acknowledge the creativity of current customers of the ORIS Flex Pack // Web system, while showcasing the quality and capabilities of the solution. The winning entries were on full display at the CGS booth at drupa. With 274 installations worldwide, the ORIS Flex Pack // Web system has firmly established itself in the market when it comes to producing highly accurate packaging proofs and mockups. The unique solution leverages on specially developed XG inks, a broad media portfolio and the ability to print on almost any printing substrate, to produce even the most demanding packaging proofing needs.

“In the past, producing dummies were a difficult and time-consuming process. Most were not colour-accurate. Flex Pack // Web allows the same colour precision for mock-ups and proofs,” said Heiner Muller, key account director for Europe, CGS. “The key is the ORIS transfer media, which can be printed upon and then transferred to any substrate common in packaging, including metal. The material is so flexible that it can, for instance, be transferred onto sheet metal and subsequently be processed on the regular finishing line, such as deepdrawn and molded.” The ORIS Flex Pack // Web system has installations across the whole

production chain, ranging from design agencies, brand owners, mock-up producers, pre-press companies to printers. Amongst the printers are flexo, offset and gravure printers and as of late, metal printers. The competition was held without stringent specifications to allow maximum creativity. All ORIS Flex Pack//Web system users worldwide were eligible for entry and each company were allowed to submit more than one entry. All submissions were anonymised to allow for neutral evaluation. Fuji Xerox wraps up successful drupa Fuji Xerox hosted a healthy number of visitors from Asia at drupa 2016. Through ‘country days’, attendees were able to experience the best of the Xerox booth. Holding the theme ‘Let the Work Flow’, the show floor was sectioned into the six key market application areas: direct mail, transactional marketing, packaging, photos, books & catalogs and marketing service providers. More than 160 applications were being printed on the booth. Amongst the machines on demo at drupa that garnered the most interest from the Asian attendees include the iGen5, the Versant line, the C1000i

press, and a drupa launchpad product: The Xerox Brenva HD, a production press that was a prominent highlight at the Xerox booth, and is the company’s first cut-sheet inkjet press. “The Brenva HD definitely is an interesting product and potentially opens new opportunities outside of what we currently sell.” said Mike Braggins, senior manager of graphics communications, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific.

The Brenva HD aims to combine the cost effectiveness of inkjet with the flexibilities of cut-sheet to address the needs of print providers in the light direct mail, transactional and book markets. Fuji Xerox is still in the process of evaluating the potential market for the Brenva HD in Asia Pacific: “We’re in the midst of talking to our customers and seeing if it is a viable technology for them, particularly in terms of running costs, and then we’ll decide whether we can bring that to Asia.”

Packaging Innovation Asia Issue 7 2016

Digital Technology Also under evaluation is the Xerox Rialto 900. The Rialto is a single pass duplex colour press, which runs at a maximum speed of up to 320 A4ppm. The printing width is 220mm, with a web width of up to 250mm. It supports paper weights from 60 to 160 gsm. At drupa, Xerox introduced two new inline finishing options for the press. The Rialto is now able to accommodate an in-line dynamic perforator and a second high capacity stacker. “We probably will, if the economics of the Brenva HD is good for Asia. Both the Brenva HD and the Xerox Rialto 900 fit between the iGen presses and the high volume continuous feed presses, in what Infotrend refer to as the ‘Zone of Disruption’. ” added Braggins. In terms of aesthetics, the Brenva HD bears resemblance to the toner press iGen5 press, which Fuji Xerox recently released in the region in March 2016. The Brenva HD incorporates many of the reliable paper-path components of the iGen. Some of the features include an inline spectrophotometer to assist with calibration and profiling and a K-only mode to enable it to run as a cost effective monochrome press. The Brenva HD utilises object-oriented colour management to distinguish text, graphics and images and optimises the image quality of each accordingly.

The Brenva HD was launched in conjunction with the new continuous feed Xerox Trivor 2400 inkjet press. Fuji Xerox will not be introducing the Trivor 2400 to the region, as its capabilities are similar to Fuji Xerox's own range of continuous feed inkjet presses, namely the FX 2800 and FX 1400 twin-engine and singleengine duplex machines. Those are experiencing great success, having sold more than 80 engines within this region to date. “What we’re beginning to see in the market is that inkjet is becoming mainstream. The inkjet quality that we see right now compared to what it was the last drupa is so marked. Four years ago, we were showing technology demonstrations on what we can do, and now we are showing technology that is actually viable for the market, and it can only continue to get better,” said Braggins. The Xerox booth also hosted various other technology demonstrations, including a clear toner for the fifth station of the iGen5 and High Fusion Ink that enables inkjet printing on traditional offset coated stocks, eliminating the need for pre or post paper treatment. A prototype of its new Direct to Object Inkjet Printer was also demonstrated.

This inkjet printer is able to print on 3D objects in a wide variety of materials including plastics, ceramics, metals and fabric. Xerox reported that the prototype has been sold to UKbased printer DCL Print. Premier Partners Two days prior to drupa, Fuji Xerox held its annual conference for Premier Partners in Amsterdam. 160 members were in attendance on 29th May for a series of events that motivates idea sharing and provides networking opportunities. The senior management team were onsite to provide valuable insight on the strategic direction of Fuji Xerox, key trends in the industry and the company’s latest innovations. Winners of the company’s ‘Best of the Best Awards’ for 2016 were also announced. Fuji Xerox Post DRUPA Event Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific will be rolling out a post-drupa event or events in the months after drupa 2016. These will extend to all customers in the region with the aim of giving those who are unable to attend drupa an overview of the major print event. Watch out for further announcements so that you can register interest with your local Fuji Xerox representatives.

Konica Minolta to focus on industrial print market with Accurio brand drupa marks the official launch of Accurio, Konica’s new branding for inkjet and digital workflow portfolio

With the commercial launch of the AccurioJet KM-1 at drupa, Konica Minolta embarked on its goal to claim leadership in the industrial printing market. Focus of the company’s research will revolve around key industrial applications such as label and packaging. The AccurioJet KM-1 is one of the first offerings under Konica Minolta’s new ‘Accurio’ line. According to Konica Minolta, the Accurio brand name signifies “the advanced, automated and, most of all, accurate nature of Konica Minolta’s technology”. The AccurioJet KM-1 was presented in the B2 inkjet printing zone of Konica Minolta’s exhibition booth, and performed in combination with MGI’s JETvarnish. The system aimed to show visitors a wide range of benefits such as hybrid printing with the integration of KM-1 into existing offset processes, duplex printing and larger sheet sizes, as well as printing on packaging board, lightweight papers and textured stock. Additionally, the AccurioJet KM-1 won the ‘Best Cut Sheet Color B2 + Printer’ at the EDP Awards 2016. The bizhub PRESS C71hc, which likewise was on demo at drupa, took home the ‘Best Cut Sheet Color Light Production’ award. The digital printing system was

launched to the Southeast Asian region early this year. The B2 Digital inkjet press is capable of printing high-quality images, comparable to those of sheet-fed offset printers. Targeted at the commercial printing market, a wide variety of paper media can be used. The KM-1 uses Konica Minolta’s inkjet head and ink design technology, combined with the image processing technology founded on toner-based digital printing. The product can print on sheets up to 585 mm x 750 mm in size, allowing effective impositions including 6-up imposition of US letter size and book cover printing, and is also capable of duplex printing. Konica Minolta’s proprietary single-pass inkjet technology combined with the high speed UV (HSUV) ink technology enables high-speed printing.

Next Generation KM-C Konica Minolta unveiled a prototype of its next generation UV inkjet technology at drupa, the KM-C. It is a B1 format UV inkjet digital press targeted at the commercial print and packaging sectors, and is the first printing system developed from top to bottom by Konica Minolta. The KM-C utilises technology from AccurioJet KM-1, giving it superior image quality at 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution, as well as excellent colour stability, inline sensor and image correction and the ability to print on a wide range of paper substrates without pre-coating. KM-C is built around a flatbed sheetfeeding platform designed by Konica Minolta that enables easy processing of materials such as cardboard and micro flute. Paper thicknesses of between 0.3 and 1.2 mm can be handled easily. The press is capable of printing up to 2,200 B1 sheets per hour with a maximum paper size of 760 x 1,060 mm. “drupa is one of the world’s greatest print shows and Konica Minolta is showing that it has the scale and expertise to grace such a formidable stage. We have one of the largest stands here in Düsseldorf, and with products such as the AccurioJet KM-1 and the technology demonstration of the KMC, we are proving that Konica Minolta’s stand is truly one that every printer with an eye on the future should have on their schedule”.

Xeikon Set to Blaze Trails in Asia Xeikon emphasised commitment to the Asian market as it highlights the company’s innovative future with Trillium One and Fusion Technology at drupa 2016. By Sha Jumari. Xeikon’s expansion in the Asia Pacific region is nothing short of impressive. The beginning of 2015 saw the opening of the company’s Technology Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which also marked the inauguration of its headquarters for Asia Pacific. At the end of 2015, Xeikon celebrated the opening of its second Technology Centre in Tokyo, Japan and drupa 2016 is Xeikon’s first major show since it was acquired by the Flint Group in late 2015. “Asia is a very important future market for Xeikon and the Flint Group. By being an integral part of the Flint Group, we have a shareholder which is very willing to invest, and have capital to put to work for growing our business. We are able to increase our

budget not just in terms of R&D, and also in feet in the streets,” said Wim Maes, chief executive officer of Xeikon and president of Flint Group’s Digital Printing Solutions division. The Flint group consists of two major shareholders, namely Goldman Sachs and Koch Industries. Thanks to the added resources provided by Flint Group, Xeikon can further strengthen its commitment and reach into Asia. Its first priority? To grow regional sales team. “Two years ago, there were basically zero of us in Asia. By the beginning of the year, we grew to 16 people, and by the end of the year there will be 24 of us. We are growing very fast as Asia is a huge focus for us. Its represents a big potential growth area for our product offerings in high quality / high

performance digital printing,” Maes continued. According to Xeikon, Japan currently holds the biggest single footprint in terms of manpower and installed base in the Asia Pacific region. To further grown, the company has also put a direct sales team in China and appointed sales managers in India and Australia.

Win Maes and Bent Serritslev

2012. Since then, Xeikon has worked closely with hand-picked customers to complete the development of the flagship 4 over 4-colour Trillium One press – just in time for the 2016 edition of drupa. The press is capable of currently running at 60 metres per minute at 1200 dpi, with a print width of 500mm. Applications that require high-quality prints are typically produced by offset, or toner-based printing. Under the toner-based printing spectrum, there are dry toners and liquid toners. As the frontrunners in dry toner technology, Xeikon now includes the Trillium technology, which is a liquid toner printing process that can print at very high speeds.

by putting people in front of the customers both in terms of customer relationship management, support and services,” added Bent Serritslev, managing director, Xeikon Asia Pacific. “With Flint Group, we can further capitalise on the reach that they have in the market as well. Our focus has essentially developed from label, to successfully entry into the commercial printing space in Asia as well. If two years ago, we were recognised for our label solutions, today we are also known as having solutions in the commercial and packaging space,” Serritslev said. “We truly believe in the potential of the market. We invest a lot in this

region and make dedicated products for the Asian market,” added Maes. “Every time I meet people in Asia, I'm always positively surprised with their entrepreneurial drive, their creativity and the can-do mentality to make it happen. We want to be good partners with Asian converters and companies in digital print and we’re very interested to talk to them.” Trillium One – the Future and Beyond At drupa 2016, the company officially presented the brand-new Trillium One press to the public. The liquid toner technology pegged to the Trillium was first introduced four years ago at drupa

“The Trillium press that you see at the show is the fastest liquid toner-based machine at up to 50% faster. And this is just the beginning. The Trillium technology has the potential to go 50%, or even 100% faster than what we have now,” said Maes. “It’s a technology that allows you to print wet on wet, so this technology prints very fast and economically.” Touted as the “missing link” in the industry for high volume direct marketing materials and publishing, the Trillium One aims to combine costeffectiveness, high quality and speed. Xeikon is targeting the Trillium One at the commercial and direct marketing materials, and catalogues have been identified as high quality markets for Trillium One, with more target markets and applications expected to be added over time. At drupa, Trillium was on demo five times daily using a range of applications during 30-minute demonstrations. In addition, Trillium’s Microgapping technology process allows for an initial 5-micron development gap, so toner particles easily transfer from one roller to the other with extreme precision and at a very high speed as the substrate progresses through the imaging process. “Trillium is a technology we acquired in 2010 and we’ve since invested a lot in it. It’s a strong future technology not just for Xeikon and the Flint Group, but will also be a game changer for the print industry,” added Maes.

Management/General alternative to hot / cold foiling, screen printed white, tactile varnish, spot print, and Braille. Serritslev added that Asian interest in Fusion is high: “There is a definite interest in the Fusion technology. Asian converters are asking about the technology and keen to explore what it can do to make a difference to their business Fusion gives them a different level of flexibility and opens up opportunities to reach outside of what they're currently doing.” Tonnik – The Elixir of Sustainability At the core of the Trillium One technology is the liquid toner, Tonnik. The liquid toner combines all the advantaged of dry toner in a liquid format and has the potential to become the most sustainable, environmentally friendly and economical colorant in the industry. The Tonnik’s first focus is on recyclability. According to Maes, a lot of the digital printing technology currently available in the market are not able to meet requirements of paper recycling plants. Often times, these technologies, be it in inkjet or tonerbased, do not recycle. “A lot of plants out there do not necessarily have the money to invest in new paper recycling technology. We have to make sure that whatever we print can fit with current paper recycling technology,” explained Maes. “It’s not a problem when your digital printed products are only 2-3% of the total paper coming in. However, digital printing is growing very fast. Soon you’ll see the numbers growing to 5%10%, then it becomes an issue,” Maes continued. “The new Tonnik liquid toners have been fully tested and is going to be perfectly paper recyclable.” With the Trillium technology, Xeikon is planning to head towards vegetable oilbased toners in the future. The Tonnik liquid toner will be just as sustainable as Xeikon’s current repertoire of dry toners, including QA-CD and ICE, which are all food-safe. Trillium is able to achieve a high level of quality due to the high resolution made possible by the imaging heads (1200 dpi) and the small toner particle

size of less than 2 microns used in the Xeikon-crafted high viscosity liquid toner. The toner contains no evaporating carriers for a more environmentally conscious print production process that also mechanically recycles the majority of the carrier liquid. Biomaterial derived carrier liquids have been identified further increasing the sustainability of this new technology. As tested by INGEDE, printed materials are perfectly deinkable on the Trillium press. Fusion Technology – One-Pass Wonder Fusion Technology is another headlining concept on demo at the Xeikon booth. Targeted at the label and packaging market, the technology combines full colour production printing with digital embellishment of labels and packaging in a single, one-pass and fully digital production process. “In label printing, a lot of labels are being printed digitally, but next to printing there's a lot of embellishments to be done, such as foiling and varnishing, which are done conventionally. Having a total solution to connect the digital technologies and make them run as one, is an important development. This umbrella of connecting various digital solutions we call Fusion,” said Maes. “Fusion is essentially the workflow and the concept of combining all these different technologies. digital foiling, digitial varnishing, we will put all of these into fusion.” This innovation is capable of producing embellishments through modules, which currently includes a digital

drupa debuts: Xeikon 9600 and Xeikon FDU drupa 2016 was the launchpad for the new Xeikon 9600, a one-pass-duplex web-fed system. The press will replace the Xeikon 8600 as a solution for document printing. The Xeikon 9600 is able to print speeds of up to 14.5 mpm at a 1200 dpi x 3600 dpi resolution. It integrates the variable data capabilities of the Xeikon X-800 front-end and incorporates a 5th color station for spot color and color gamut enlargement and security applications. Its QA-CD dry toner enables the use of substrates without specific pretreatment, offers a wide color gamut and has no VOC emissions. Xeikon also unveiled the Xeikon FDU, a newly-developed flatbed die-cut unit. The FDU was developed for end-toend printing and converting for folding carton printers and is ideal for near-line finishing of digital work. It can also accommodate offset litho runs. This 2000-sheet-per-hour flatbed system handles sheet sizes from 400 x 400mm up to 530 x 1000mm and a maximum die cut size of 490 x 700mm. Substrate thickness can range from 160 to 890 micron for paper and carton board and also micro-flute corrugated board can be finished, making it ideal for completing offset as well as digital runs. The FDU is unique in the fact that it used a step and repeat die tool which reduces cost of tooling and substantially reduce set-up time. Furthermore, the die cutter comes standard with a toolless stipping unit and delivers high quality, nick free blacks.

Komori Corporation ends successful drupa 2016 A comprehensive international exhibition of printing equipment and materials with many accomplishments in the more than 50 years since it was first held in 1951, drupa 2016 – the 16th in its long history – was held for eleven days beginning on May 31st and ending on June 10th. Komori provides new value and solutions born from extending the new potential of printing together with customers through all products – not only offset presses but also digital printing systems, postpress machinery, printed electronics, materials and equipment – and also connecting all

things and functions. Targeting richer print communications, we presented proactive demonstrations. As a result, we attracted high interest and attention from many users in a range of machines and systems, and a large number of visitors came to the Komori booth during the exhibition.

In offset presses, from the Lithrone GX40RP, which attracted great attention due to its double-sided printing with single-sided gripper configuration, to the Lithrone G29, the half-size press incorporating a full model change, we demonstrated based on our themes – slashed makeready time in multiple machine sizes, full automation and strengthened quality inspection systems. Many customers came to the booth every day and a large number of orders were received from around the world, including Europe, the U.S. and Asia. In digital printing systems, the Impremia IS29, which began regular sales at this drupa, was applauded by many digital printers for its ability to print on any stock without precoating. It attracted great interest not only in Europe and the U.S. but also particularly in Greater China. Artron, which is expanding its business in this region, expressed admiration for the excellence of the quality, which exceeded its conception, and the reliability of Komori machines. It indicated that it would invest in multiple Impremia IS29s. In addition, the Impremia NS40, equipped with the Nanographic® printing system, which was shown in

Sheetfed Offset a technical exhibit, surprised many customers, giving them expectations for the future, due to its offset-level quality, speed and distinctive wide color gamut. Komori garnered a greater number of letters of inquiry than we anticipated, starting with 4Over, a prominent U.S. printer. drupa 2016 wound up as a tremendous success for Komori, including in sales. An outline of the Komori exhibit is provided in the following. At drupa 2016, Komori exhibited under the theme ‘Open New Pages’ , the same as IGAS 2015, and the subtheme‘Connected Print’. The exhibit machines consisted of four sheetfed offset printing presses (all were H-UV machines and one of these was an H-UV L (LED) machine), including two totally new products. In addition, the Impremia IS29 sheetfed UV inkjet digital printing system, the Impremia NS40 sheetfed Nanographic Printing® system, and the Apressia CT137 cutter were exhibited. Connected Print with ICT Komori ICT (Information and Communications Technology) Solutions is the general name for solutions to boost printer productivity that only Komori as a press manufacturer could deliver. These solutions use the latest ICT and connect print manufacturing processes to make them visible, automatic and labor saving. In the Komori stand, three objectives (print visualization, process management and workflow automation) that Komori’s ICT Solutions can realize for print communications organizations were introduced with a demonstration movie.

Demonstrations During the show, three demonstrations a day were run on the exhibit machines (except for the last day) based on the idea of next-generation ‘Connected Print’. Total solutions that showed new value and potential by connecting offset and digital, hardware and software were proposed. In particular, the demonstration of the Impremia IS29 digital printing system that was launched at IGAS 2015 was remarkable. In addition, the Impremia NS40 new printing system that debuted at this drupa drew a lot of visitor attention. All demonstrations of the offset presses used the K-Supply ink that is optimized for Komori presses. Lithrone GX40 In the demonstration of the H-UVequipped LITHRONE GX40, the business model of food and garment packaging was presented by printing with instant curing at the 18,000 sph maximum printing speed. With

the PDC-SX Spectral Print Density Control-SX and the PDF Comparator System, the power of quick start-up and high quality control that meet the demands of the ever-stricter packaging market was shown. Lithrone GX40RP The state-of-the-art Lithrone GX40RP has no perfecting mechanism so no margin is needed on the tail edge of the sheet. Because of the single-sided gripper configuration, paper costs can be minimized and stable, highproductivity one-pass double-sided printing at 18,000 sph is possible with not only light but also heavy stock. The demonstration showed the new technologies that enable high productivity, quick start-up and ultimate short makeready. Impremia IS29 blanket washing and KHS-AI ink settings – contributed to fast job changeover. Lithrone G37 The new Lithrone G37 that debuted in Europe at this drupa can print 8-up A4 impositions. It enables a high-efficiency, low-cost production environment by saving space, saving energy, and cutting plate costs. The exhibition machine was equipped with H-UV L: LED , which has been added to the H-UV lineup. Perfect for a wide range of needs in publishing and commercial printing using either light or heavy stock due to printing with the instant curing system. In addition, it was equipped with the Full-APC fully automatic plate changer, the PDC-SG print density control system, and the PQA-S SG in-line color control system. These functions excel on small lots of many different items. The Lithrone G37 showed workand-turn printing at the 15,000 sph maximum printing speed in the demonstration. Because of H-UV L (LED), high-productivity short-run operation is possible even with a onesided press. Lithrone G29+Apressia CT137 A new product – the Lithrone G29 – was unveiled with a completely new design. The exhibition machine was configured with five colors, coater and extended delivery. The high productivity that comes from being equipped with the latest systems was demonstrated by H-UV printing using heavy and light stock. This press maintains high print quality even at its maximum printing speed. PQA-S V5 has a 4K camera and provides in-line color control in

addition to high-precision inspection. Quick checking of quality is performed by the PDC-SX Spectral Print Density Control-SX model and in-line color control by PQA-S V5 realizes high quality and productivity. The new Lithrone G29 for printing on both light and heavy stock offers high added value printing thanks to a wide range of unit configurations. It makes possible a flexible production environment due to high quality and agility. Impremia IS29 The Impremia IS29 is suitable for a wide range of stocks and sizes and enables printing on the same stocks with offset and inkjet without any precoating or special processing. It is also capable of single-sided or doublesided high quality printing. The gripper-to-gripper paper transfer device ensures high register accuracy. The UV instant curing system makes possible one-pass double-sided printing. The work is sent to postpress right after printing. This enables small lots of many different items and short turnarounds. The business model put forward in the demonstration at this drupa was a printing company presenting a sales promotion idea for a fashion brand. A small number of copies of a catalog that is color matched with offset, a poster for a shop, and a premium paper folder were output. In addition, this demonstration featured color matching with the Lithrone GX40RP for commercial printing and printing of on-demand personalized packaging for package production.

Impremia NS40 Komori and Landa became strategic business partners in 2012 and are developing the revolutionary Nanographic Printing® System and printing process. At this drupa, the Impremia NS40 was exhibited with the five necessary conditions for digital printing — print quality, printing speed, cost per page, area coverage and the ability to print on any substrate. In the first job, about 50 sheets of several different images were printed by variable output. The second job was continuous printing of a poster. These jobs were displayed on the screen. Even with variable output and a job changeover, this only took three minutes at the 6,500 sph maximum printing speed. K-Supply/Service Corner At the exhibition site, products that contribute to energy saving on existing machines and in the plant, such as DC blowers and a real-time operations monitor (power consumption monitoring device), were shown. Under the K-Supply brand name, Komori offers a lineup of special consumables, materials and equipment that are standard for Komorimade presses. K-Supply is not just consumables but also printing supplies developed with the Komori Graphic Technology Center (KGC) for high print quality and performance. All exhibit presses used K-Supply ink. K-Supply ink is the Komori standard H-UV ink offering high-level hardness, print quality, versatility and economical performance. GLX 640

Finest finishing with the KBA Rapida RSP 106 Print finishing and for the first time post-press were major topics on the KBA stand at Drupa which recently closed its doors. One innovation presented by KBA-Sheetfed at new user Kolbe-Coloco Spezialdruck in Versmold, Germany, drifted rather out of focus in the midst of Drupa: the new Rapida RSP 106 rotary screen printing press KBA-Sheetfed developed the Rapida RSP 106 as an offline finishing system for luxury packaging, high-quality promotional material and corporate publishing based on the renowned Rapida platform (feeder, delivery, sheet travel, dryer, console etc.). This means that working with the new machine is

almost routine for operators who have worked with a Rapida sheetfed offset press and it is easy to operate for those who haven’t. Special finishers or offset printers who wish to expand their portfolio by adding extremely highquality finishing are a key target group for the Rapida RSP 106.

A further group is screen printers who finish large print runs. They profit from its high production speed of up to 8,000sph depending on job. What is more, the new rotary screen printing press is also suited to new business fields in the field of industrial printing. As part of post treatment the rotary screen system is one of many options for the new KBA VariJET 106 Powered by Xerox inkjet press. Sheet preparation for high-quality coating The Rapida RSP 106 consists of a calendar unit and the actual screen printing unit. The calendar unit depowders the printed sheets and removes any impurities. The sheets are smoothed to improve the spreading of the coating. The calendar unit consists of one impression cylinder with a special compressible jacket as well as a switched chrome roller. This is in Rotary screen printing delivers brilliant finishing results thanks to the high layer thicknesses

types. A smart in-house workflow in pre-press reduces the outlay for rotary screen making. Screens are usually supplied cut-toformat and with hole patterns for film positioning and seam welding. Exposure, washing out and drying processes are the same as for flat screens. Steps specific to rotary screens include seam welding and mounting of the end rings. Special handling fixtures are available for both of these steps. addition to the fully automatic blade system with integrated extraction. It removes foreign particles from the chrome roller and extracts these. The calendar unit adapts precisely to the respective substrate with its finely adjustable printing pressure. Clean production in screen printing The screen printing unit itself is equipped with the AirTronic Drum, a perforated impression cylinder with a perforated jacket. Air suction fixes the sheet over the full area of the jackets. Above it is the rotary screen which can be changed quickly in a few simple steps. The exact positioning of the closed screen area during breaks in printing results in a clean working environment. The screen only rotates when sheets run through the unit.

The blade can be accessed from the side for changing. The stepless, motorized setting of the blade pressure and angle make working both directly at the screen printing unit and the operating panel, plus full console integration of all components easy. The screen cylinder is driven individually. The drive positions the screen with the gap area facing downwards ensuring that the coating or ink does not leak during production stoppages. The circumferential register and if necessary corrections to the print length are set via the individual drive. The motorized cylinder pressure setting adjusts the unit to various substrate thicknesses.

Available now The Rapida RSP 106 is tried and tested, and has been available since Drupa 2016. Alongside the machine which has been in operation at Kolbe-Coloco Spezialdruck in Versmold (North Rhine-Westfalia, Germany) for some months now, a Rapida RSP 106 will soon also be in the customer centre at KBA-Sheetfed for demonstration and testing purposes.

Consumers still value print & paper but environmental misunderstandings persist Citing environmental concerns, corporations and governments are increasingly driving communications online and making paper more difficult, and costly, to access. A new survey provides valuable insights into how consumers view this trend, and how they perceive and use paper in their daily lives. Carried out by international research company Toluna in June 2016, the survey questioned more than 7000 consumers worldwide (528 of them in the UK). Among its findings, the survey reveals that many consumers want to retain the choice of using print and paper, at no additional cost, and that many question or feel misled by “go paperless – go green” and similar

“greenwash” claims – believing cost savings to be the primary driver for organisations looking to phase out paper-based communications. Despite some concern over environmental impacts, many respondents preferred paper-based communications to digital alternatives, with ease of reading and a lack of

internet access among the many reasons given. A large majority recognised that paper-based communications can be sustainable when produced and used responsibly. A lack of awareness of the industry’s positive environmental activities (especially sustainable forest management and recycling) persists. Despite European forests having grown by 44,000 square kilometres – an area bigger than Switzerland – in the past 10 years, 65% of UK respondents believed that European forests were in fact shrinking. The majority of respondents were also unaware that paper is one of the most recycled products with recovery rates of 72% in Europe. There is a notable preference for print on paper in all age groups, indicating the more fundamental, and more human way that we react to the physicality of print on paper.

16% believe that our forests have either stayed the same or increased in size (10% in 2011)

89% agreed that, when responsibly produced, used and recycled, print and paper can be a sustainable way to communicate

Many people need a paper option and don’t want to be forced into “digital only”

79% agreed that print on paper is more pleasant to handle and touch when compared to other media (up from 70% in 2011)

31% believe that the paper industry has a higher than average recycling rate (25% in 2011) 14% have seen adverts related to the effectiveness and sustainability of print and paper (8% in 2011), and a large majority rated the ads as credible and useful. Key Findings: “Go Paperless-Go Green” claims are questioned by many 83% of respondents receiving environmental claims like; “Go Paperless – Go Green”, or “Go Paperless – Save trees”, or “Get your bills online - it’s better for the environment” believe such companies are seeking to save costs. 40% feel misled by these claims

77% would be unhappy if they were asked to pay a premium for paper bills and statements 74% of respondents want the option to continue receiving printed information as it provides a permanent record for important documents

86% believe that when forests are responsibly managed it is environmmetally acceptable to use trees to produce products such as wood for construction and paper for printing 80% still prefer reading print on paper than from a screen 79% of consumers enjoy the tactile experience of paper and print

56% are unhappy that the responsibility to print valuable documents is being passed to consumers

47% believe paper records are more environmentally sustainable than electronic storage of information

46% would consider changing provider if they are being asked to move to paperless communication

78% are concerned about the effect on forests by the production of print and paper

42% of all respondents still don’t have a reliable internet connection and want paper records

73% consider that paper is based on a renewable resource Forest growth in Europe is still misunderstood Only 5% of consumers believe European forests have grown in size over the past 50 years 76% believe that they had stayed the same or reduced in size The great recycling story of print and paper is not well known 66% believe that less than 50% of waste paper is recovered for recycling Only 8% of consumers believe that the industry recycling rate is more than 60% Only 31% believe the industry recycling rate is higher than average, whereas (at 72%) the paper industry has one of the highest recycling rates of all More people are seeing ads promoting print and paper 14% saw ads related to the effectiveness and sustainability of print and paper (vs. 8% in 2011) and the large majority rated the ads as credible and useful. People prefer paper towels to dry hands An observational study conducted in four washrooms during ISSA/Interclean Amsterdam 2016 last month revealed that 90% of people showed a behavioural preference for paper towels over jet air dryers in the washroom. The study, undertaken by the European Tissue Symposium (ETS), observed the behaviour of 3,879 visitors – 2,474 men and 1,405 women – when washing and drying their hands following a visit to the washroom. Four washrooms - two men’s and two women’s - were equipped with both paper towels and jet air dryers, situated directly above each other. Faced with a choice of drying methods, 90% of men and 91% of women chose paper towels over jet air dryers. “We undertook this study during Interclean/ISSA in order to give us a better understanding of people’s behaviour in washrooms,” explained ETS Chairman, Roberto Berardi. “The results are very clear. People overwhelmingly plump for paper towels as the preferred way to dry their hands following a visit to the washroom.”

The study also looked at the prevalence of soap use in the handwashing process. It found that 26% of visitors used just water to wash their hands while 74% used soap and water. The use of soap was higher than in

previous studies, probably due to the fact that users were cleaning industry professionals. Previously, research by leading microbiologists has shown single use towels to offer the most hygienic way to dry hands following hand washing during a visit to the washroom. “We now have proof that in addition to helping prevent the spread of viruses, nothing is more hygienic than paper to dry your hands, but also that paper towels are the most preferred option among users,” concluded Roberto Berardi. “Facilities managers should take note if they want clients to be happy and healthy following a trip to the washroom.” ISSA/Interclean was held in Amsterdam from 10-13 May 2016. The most important exhibition in the global Cleaning Industry calendar and it welcomed some 30,000 visitors.

Mimaki LUS-350 ink is compatible with the Mimaki UJF7151plus and JFX200-2513 printers and will be available in CMYK, white and a unique clear ink. “This new ink will change the way vacuum moulded – or thermoformed – applications are created,” says Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA at Mimaki Europe. “It brings the benefits of digital printing to this segment of the market, addressing requirements for fast turn, short-run moulded objects with exceptional graphic quality. Previously, objects had to be formed and then have the images applied manually or with screen printing, Before Embedded Color Bar technology

a time-consuming and expensive process. Now thermoformed objects can be imaged before forming, using Mimaki digital printers with an ink that will not crack or otherwise be damaged during the heat-based forming process. It will provide a beautiful finish for applications such as car parts, mockups, moulded signs, kiosks and more.” The details Mimaki LUS-350 ink will stretch up to 350% when heated to between 120deg C and 200 deg C. After cooling to room temperature, the ink’s rigidity is restored, while securely adhering to the moulded product without cracking or peeling. Thus, the ink is unique in providing rigidity, durability and stretchability to serve a broad range of applications with no-compromise image quality. Images are printed on flat substrates using specialised imaging software and then formed into the desired shape using vacuum, thermoforming or other moulding techniques.

adds, “is that intricate textures and designs in fine decorative prints are retained even after moulding. What’s even more exciting is the ability to apply multiple layers of ink to create raised areas in the image for further enhancement, without worrying about cracking or the quality of the adhesion.” Mimaki’s LUS-350 clear ink is also unique in the market, adding texture or a glossy finish that can’t be achieved with coloured ink alone.

“The beauty of this ink when used in the thermoforming process,” Horsten After Embedded Color bar technology

EFI unveils new Cretaprint ceramic tile printers to China At the Ceramics China tradeshow, EFI presented a complete ecosystem for tile printing including the new M4 platform alongside advanced Fiery DFE and Cretacolor inks EFI launched two new digital inkjet printing technologies at the May 2730 Ceramics China tradeshow in Guangzhou, the EFI Cretaprint M4 and EFI Cretaprint M4 SOL. The two launches aim to drive more value and efficiency for customers in the analogue-to-digital transition in ceramic tile decoration. Along with the two new technologies, EFI also exhibited the full Cretaprint ecosystem for ceramic decoration printers, ink and colour management, which included advanced EFI Fiery digital front end (DFE) technologies and genuine EFI Cretacolor inks. “China is the world’s largest producer, consumer and exporter of ceramic tiles, and we were thrilled to showcase our portfolio to new and potential customers who are looking for new innovations that can help them earn more profit with efficient, high-quality digital print technologies,” said José Luis Ramon Moreno, vice president and general manager for EFI’s Cretaprint and Nozomi operations. According to EFI, the new products are aimed at helping customers maximise production quality and ink savings, minimise production cost and expand chromatic richness so they can manufacture at the highest possible quality in the most efficient way possible.

The EFI Cretaprint M4 platform allows customers to print on popular, larger tile sizes up to 1180mm wide and offers enhanced imaging quality with variable-drop grayscale imaging. This gives users a cost-effective and efficient alternative to analog methods for vibrant full-colour decoration. The printer includes eight bars for colour and special-effects inks, and features a new, automatic nozzle cleaning system that yields a much longer print head life compared to other ceramic tile printers. The Cretaprint M4 SOL, on the other hand, is a soluble-salt digital print offering specifically designed for producing high-transit, porcelainpolished tiles. Users can jet soluble-salt inks and bring richer colours to their porcelain tile decorations with lapatto and polished finishes. This combination of Cretaprint inkjet technology and a soluble salts application widens the possibilities of creative design of porcelain tiles. EFI Cretaprint digital inkjet technology also brings tighter control on process parameters for constant ink laydown and temperature, to allow for higher tone stability on finished porcelain jobs.

In addition, EFI exhibited the newly released EFI Fiery proServer for Cretaprint, version 2.0. The latest version is described to be a highend DFE technology that help customers retain their competitive edge by producing superior-quality designs faster, with improved colour management and reduced ink costs. A new and unique Smart Ink Saving feature on the Fiery proServer incorporates users’ actual ink costs to calculate the most affordable ink combination possible for each pixel of a design. The product also includes a CMYK+spot colour mode that simplifies editing tasks without limiting the product’s full technical capabilities. To round off the EFI tile printing ecosystem are Cretacolor inks. Combined with Cretaprint printers and the Fiery proServer, the inks help users achieve maximum colour intensity and gamut, chromatic range and colour stability over time, and uniformity throughout the manufacturing line. EFI’s Ceramics China exhibit followed the company’s successful exhibition earlier this year at the Cevisama International Show in Spain, where EFI Cretaprint received the prestigious Alfa De Oro prize.

NEWS The Massivit 1800 uses a special hardening gel rather than plastic filament to print in 3D, one reason why it is faster than most other offerings, and definitely bigger in output. It was developed by people who know wide-format intimately as they were involved with Idanit, Scitex and HP. “The hard part will be keeping our operators and customers away from wanting to 3D print new creations!” beamed Bruce Scott, “Probably me as well.” CIVIC MEDIA DOUBLES UP ON FUJIFILM UVISTAR 5 METRE GRAND FORMAT Civic Media of North Lakes, near Brisbane, has installed a second 5 metre wide Uvistar printer from Fujifilm, to handle an 82% increase in workload over the past 12 months. Managing Director Adam Middleton commented: “We are extremely busy and even with the addition of a second Uvistar, we have had to increase operations to 24/5.”

FIRST MASSIVIT 3D PRINTER INTO NSW SITE Composite Images of Artarmon, Sydney is the first POP, sign and display printer in NSW* to commit to the giant 3D machine from Israeli-manufacturer Massivit, placing the order on the spot at drupa. (* a VIC customer Massivit was also ordered) “There is nothing else like it,” says Composite CEO Bruce Scott. “We were looking for something to differentiate us from regular wide format roll and flatbed production, and the Massivit 1800 fitted that bill perfectly – so I went shopping.” Delivery and installation will be completed in early September and is fully supported by freshly-appointed Massivit distributor Photo Electronic Services, who also represent Durst in Australia. www.photoelectronics.com.au Composite Images is one of Australia’s leading sign, display, exhibition and

point-of-purchase manufacturers with clients that include Qantas, Australia Post, and The Star. The company currently has several roll and flatbed devices, cutting and finishing capabilities. “The possibilities for exciting, vibrant advertising and promotion are endless with this technology,” says Scott, “a beta site in New York tapped into Sony’s launch of the film Angry Birds and created 3D printed bus graphics, blended in with the wrapping and illumination. It can print virtually any concept in 3D, which can then be finished by wrapping, painting, airbrushing or burnishing.” Massivit 1800’s size is not limited to the 1.8 H x 1.5D metre platform capability. Larger 3D products can be printed in sections and then joined together. “If a 3D production run is longer, then the thermoforming mould can be produced on the Massivit at a fraction of the cost and in less time than current methods,” says Scott.

Civic Media is already using several Fujifilm-supplied roll and Flatbed UV printers including an Acuity Advance HS flatbed UV, the first 5 metre Uvistar UV roll-to-roll machine and an Acuity LED 1600. The showpiece is an Inca Onset Q40i UV installed in 2013, with a 3140mm x 1600mm bed and ability to produce up to 305 sqm/hr on rigid materials, at near-photographic quality. Fujifilm is the exclusive distributor of Inca Digital Printers, a Cambridgeshire, UK company. On why Civic sticks with Fujifilm for wide and grand format, Middleton is unequivocal: “After using Fujifilm machinery and seeing how well they have looked after our account, we knew we could build on our relationship with them as we continue to grow as a business with them as our supplier.” The new Uvistar, a Pro8 model, is mainly for printing large rolls of vinyl banner and banner mesh, such as that used to shroud construction site fences and scaffolding. It features an array of 32 inkjet printheads delivering true 600dpi (up to 1200dpi apparent), and a wide-gamut

NEWS Conclusion: This year’s drupa had been a complete success for KOLBUS. Numerous and enthusiastic exhibition visitors contributed and enjoyed a great atmosphere on the booth and sales at record level. Agfa Graphics shines with breaking new technologies at drupa 2016 With its strong showcase of offset and wide-format inkjet printing solutions, spiced with an extensive offering of software solutions, Agfa Graphics underlined its commitment to the print industry at drupa 2016 (Düsseldorf, Germany, May 31-June 10). As announced during its pre-drupa press conference back in March, Agfa Graphics focuses heavily on the new developments for offset printing. Stefaan Vanhooren, President, Agfa Graphics commented: “Print and offset printing technology continue to play a crucial role despite many new alternatives. Chemistry-free plate solutions already made prepress extremely convenient and environmentfriendly. Now, Agfa Graphics is taking conventional plate solutions one step further too by adding total impact of operations and convenience to the equation. This ECO3 approach—which stands for Eco-friendly, Economic and Extremely convenient—generates plenty of business opportunities. Avalon N8-90 made its debut at drupa 2016 as the fastest thermal CtP for B1 plates ever (70 pph). Hooked to the new Arkana smart processor and loaded with Energy Elite Eco plates, the system offers a bath life of 15,000 m², eliminates the need of rinsing water and consumes not more than 30ml of chemistry per set of four B1 plates. Agfa Graphics also announced Azura TU VLF (chemistry-free plates for very large-format offset applications), and demoed Azura TE direct-on-press plates. Both are characterized by extremely high image contrast as well as excellent daylight stability and fast roll-up, thus offering tremendous advantages when going on press. Recent improvements for chemistry-free applications for the newspaper industry

include the Attiro VHS clean-out unit with the N95-VCF (violet chemistryfree) printing plates, and the Advantage N Essentials CtP series, which takes computer-to-plate technology for newspaper printers back to its essence. Advantage N Essentials comes in a manual, semi-manual and a trolley-load version. Agfa Graphics also announced the Advantage N-PL for the top end of the market. With its ability to image up to 3,100 plates continuously at a speed of up to 400 plates per hour, the newcomer takes computer-to-plate (CtP) productivity and automation to the next level. All Advantage models provide great user-friendliness and reliability. Wide-format solutions All Jeti and Anapurna wide-format solutions at the booth, driven by the Asanti workflow, featured the latest developments: the highly productive Jeti Tauro in a ¾ automation line-up including the new automatic board feeder and unloading unit, and the versatile Jeti Mira with the unique dockable roll-to-roll option. Also during drupa, the Jeti Mira was rewarded with the EDP award in the category ‘Best wide format flatbed/ hybrid printer up to 250 m²/h’. On its family of Anapurna i printers, Agfa Graphics introduced state-of-theart, air-cooled LED UV-curing as an alternative to the current mercury lamp curing technology. LED UV enables printers to print on a broader range of media, to save energy, to increase system up-time and to reduce operational expenses. In addition to widening the media range, UV LED curing technology

delivers operational and environmental benefits. Opposed to mercury lamps, the lifetime of the LED alternative is in line with the economical lifetime of a printer of typically five years. On display at drupa 2016 was the Anapurna H2500i LED system, the 2.5m hybrid printer. The new Acorta 3120 HD cutter, targeted at very thick or dense materials, completed the wide-format set-up at drupa. Stefaan Vanhooren continued: “As a leading player with a truly global footprint in the print markets, we focus on both the offset printing and the wide-format printing industry, while also opening doors to new print markets and applications in need of innovative solutions.” Industrial printing UV-ink technology also appeals to industry integrators aiming to use printing technologies in non-printing industries. Agfa Graphics gives them access to technologies and know-how on fluids including inks, primers, white and varnish, and also software. Multiple opportunities present themselves in the fields of flooring, decoration or bottling, as well as in the automotive industry, or when it comes to glass or metal printing. Software cloud solutions In the spotlight at drupa the extensive range of software solutions from Agfa Graphics with new versions of Apogee, Asanti and Arkitex workflows including StoreFront web-to-print and many state-of-the-art cloud implementations.

Design Meets Technology - Highcon and Eco Concrete achieve the impossible The Highcon vision of bridging the gap between design creativity and production capability, combined with Eco Concrete's relentless pursuit of new technologies, lie behind the spectacular 2 meter Morpheus bench. This extraordinary design, coming to life with the help of Highcon's 3D modeling technology, will be presented in Taipei by Eco for the "Creative Roughness - Contemporary Israeli Design", part of a range of exhibitions being held during World Design Capital Taipei 2016 from July 9th until August 14th. The concrete bench was designed by Eco Concrete Ideas and produced using Highcon Rapid Layer Manufacturing technology to cut 4,000 layers of paper, resulting in the creation of a complex mold in a low-cost method. Faster than CNC and eco-friendly, it uses recycled

Not only does Highcon technology dramatically reduce the costs of mold production, it also disrupts the creative cycle and dramatically cuts lead time. In the case of the bench, from first concept to completion was an unimaginable three weeks! Highcon customer, Skitza Print in Israel, produced the mold in a turnaround time of less than a week on their Highcon Euclid digital cutting and creasing machine, with actual production time of a few hours. The mold was made from standard recycled paperboard which was then filled with concrete. Extraction from the paper is simple and once finished, the mold was sent back to be recycled again. Although Eco experts say that it would have been impossible to produce this design by any current conventional method, they estimate that the production of anything similar would have been around ten times more expensive and would have taken months rather than days. The Morpheus bench was produced on the Highcon Euclid digital finishing machine with a dedicated 3D Modeling workflow solution that converts standard 3D models into separate layers that can be cut on Highcon's machines. A paper mold can be produced quickly, with dramatic reduction in time and cost. Complex structures and textures can be created that are impossible in any conventional molding technology or in any known additive manufacturing technology. Fine details and smooth surfaces are achieved, when required, by very little post-processing.
