Kodak Sets a Gold Standard for Publications around the World with Special Covers Historically, gold leaf or gold foil was a prohibitively expensive way of achieving gold effects in printing. But soon gold will be available to everyone, thanks to KODAK NEXPRESS Gold Dry Ink, a unique option for the NEXPRESS Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions that adds a gold metallic, sparkle effect for applications such as direct mail, magazine and catalogue covers, certificates, photos, tickets, and other special projects. To promote Gold Dry Ink, Kodak collaborated with five different magazines around the world to create special covers that feature the attentiongetting gold effects. First introduced at drupa 2012 and winner of a Must See ’Ems award at Graph Expo 2012, NEXPRESS Gold Dry Ink enables users to truly differentiate content. Beta sites are enjoying outstanding results with this new option, uncovering a variety of opportunities to add value to print applications. By combining the effect of gold tones with the high-quality output of NEXPRESS Presses, Kodak is giving digital print professionals more options for growing revenues and increasing profits. The five magazines that feature NEXPRESS Gold Dry Ink on their covers as part of this global project are: • Effekte—a worldwide publication distributed by Merck to its clients in the pigments industry • Print21—an Australian publication for commercial printers • Digital Printer—a UK magazine for commercial printers • PrintWeek MEA—a UAE magazine for commercial printers • ME Printer—a UAE magazine for commercial printers “Our cover image was specially selected to highlight the creative possibilities of

the gold ink,” noted Patrick Howard of Print21. “The pigments in the Gold Dry Ink produce a sparkle effect that is similar to that achieved with offset metallic inks. The Gold solution follows the pattern already set by Kodak with its dimensional printing effect, utilizing the Fifth Imaging Unit of the press to add decorative or tactile layers to the CMYK inks.” Ideal for a wide variety of print applications, the new Gold Dry Ink joins other award- winning print capabilities of the NEXPRESS Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions—such as Dimensional printing, Red Fluorescing ink, inline watermarking, spot glossing, and others—that help printers stand out. Other new features on the KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Production Color Press include a Long Sheet option that enables printers to offer larger applications, including point of sale,

book covers, dust jackets, packaging inserts, and labels; and new Intelligent Calibration System version 3 software that offers continuous improvement in quality and performance with up to 20 percent faster processing time. “Digital printing is a highly competitive market with intense price pressures and shrinking margins,” said Greg Gresock, Kodak’s Director of EPS Marketing. “With the NEXPRESS Platform, we have worked very hard to give customers opportunities to add value for their clients through unique printing and finishing applications. Gold Dry Ink is another way to make a printed piece stand out in the mailbox, at events, or on the shelf. And the best part is that it’s just one of several unique capabilities customers can leverage with our Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions. By demonstrating the gold effects on these well-known magazines, we are able to showcase the visual impact.”

Professional Colour Control Reducing Variation in the Digital Supply Chain Abstract: In a global economy, the manufacture of print and packaging is increasingly distributed across time and distance. Digital workflows offer an advantage in streamlining distributed manufacturing; however, these workflows must take into account the brand owner’s need for brand integrity across all manufacturing processes and materials, especially as it relates to colour accuracy. This white paper explains how the X-Rite Graphic Arts Standard (XRGA) helps all stakeholders in the colour supply chain ensure colour consistency across geographies, printing techniques, substrates, media and production processes.

Dynamics of the Colour Network Communicating accurate colour can be a challenge, even with all of the sophisticated colour management technology available today. This is especially true in complex color networks that extend across multiple sites, geographies, media and substrate types, and production technologies. Let’s face it: Colour is still a blend of art and science. It starts with inspiration and the specification of a colour or colour palette for a specific brand or use case. The expectation on the part of the designer or brand owner is that the color as specified will be consistent across all use cases. Though the intention is there, oftentimes, this simply does not happen because of the wide range of variability and capability that exists within the colour network. The Role of Instrumentation in Delivering Color Accuracy Once a designer or brand owner has selected a colour, it can be measured

using a spectral measurement device to determine precise spectral values for that colour. Over time, users often find themselves using a variety of different measurement instruments from different manufacturers for colour control. They also use instruments of various ages, with varied measurement functionality at different points in their workflow. This can lead to slightly different measurements for the same sample due to the fact that each manufacturer uses slightly different physical instrument calibration standards. Through various standards, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) provides guidance in terms of the establishment of accurate colour measurement. ISO 13655, revised in 2009, establishes procedures for the measurements and colorimetrical computations appropriate to objects that reflect, transmit, or self-illuminate, including flat-panel displays.

Bringing colour communication to a series of languages to communicate accurate colour across the supply chain

A designer or brand owner can select a color with a spectral measurement device to determine precise spectral values for that color. In addition, communicating values is explained in detail in ISO Standard 28178, “Graphic technology--Exchange format for colour and process control data using XML or ASCII Text.” X-Rite Pantone recognised this important work and built upon it to develop the Color Exchange Format (CxF), now in its third iteration, to provide a process for mapping this data into the expanded language of CxF3. CxF3 is now being incorporated into a series of standards under the ISO 17972 series. These standards-based activities have been helpful in bringing more consistency to the application of effective colour management techniques within the printing and packaging industries and throughout the colour network. However, they still fall short in addressing variation among

colour measurement instruments. What Is XRGA? It is for these reasons that in the fall of 2010, X-Rite Pantone introduced the X-Rite Graphic Arts Standard (XRGA), a language that is optimised for today’s colour business standards. XRGA operates with legacy colour measurement products and is native in new and future products from X-Rite Pantone, and the standard is being made available to third parties so that it can be applied to their instrumentation as well. XRGA delivers quality data exchange among varying sites and instrumentations, creating an optimal set point for both legacy and future devices. It also aligns calibration standards for instrumentation from both X-Rite and the former GretagMacbeth, guaranteeing better alignment among the members of both families of instruments once legacy instruments have been upgraded to XRGA compliance. With participation from third party instrument manufacturers, XRGA has the potential to optimize colour measurement across the entire multivendor colour network. XRGA: The Back Story

XRGA for Ink Manufacturers and large sites requires an assessment and implementation of recommended actions. These actions often result in less wastage and higher satisfaction levels among top tier customers In creating XRGA, X-Rite conducted a study designed to quantify the systematic differences between measurements obtained using instruments from both former companies (X-Rite and GretagMacbeth), and to ultimately arrive at the definition of a new corporate X-Rite standard for its graphic arts instrumentation which most accurately links to known industry standards. Systematic differences are quantified under the term “intermodel” agreement, which is different from the inter-instrument agreement that is typically specified for each

XRGA is a standards-based effort, directly based on the master calibration standard certification with NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (www.nist.gov). XRGA is applicable to all 0:45 and 45:0 geometry spectral devices used in the graphic arts. All new X-Rite devices come directly

Management/General 13 from the factory with native XRGAbased calibration metrology. Legacy X-Rite devices may be upgraded to XRGA; some by field upgrade and others by certified service centers. Many customers have already elected to upgrade legacy devices when the spectrophotometers are sent in for routine maintenance, calibration and recertification. Based on the results of this study, XRGA was designed to achieve the following goals: • Significantly improves the way different devices measure a given colour, reducing variation Incorporates improved methods for calibration Maintains traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. • Spectral data contains an origin tag that specifies compliance to XRGA. • Best implementation with respect to existing standards • Guarantees better alignment among

legacy X-Rite and GretagMacbeth instruments • Provides a single standard for all next generation graphic arts instruments to be delivered by X-Rite, including X-Rite eXact and i1Pro2 • Allows customers to enjoy the new benefits of XRGA for legacy instruments with this migration path – hardware, software, and legacy spectral data. Once legacy instruments are XRGA compliant, measurements from these ugraded instruments will be consistent with next generation instruments, which are all native XRGA. • Who Needs XRGA? For most products and many operating environments, the switch to XRGA results in very small differences in measurement values, so many users will not observe changes due to

XRGA. It is still highly recommended that instruments routinely be returned to X-Rite for recommended routine maintenance, calibration and recertification to take maximum advantage of the XRGA benefits. For smaller operations that have not implemented standardisation, upgrading to XRGA will provide an immediate benefit that will help them achieve standardisation and readiness for ISO compliance and future products. For printers and packaging converters serving a larger supply chain and remote or connected brand owners using mixed devices across the platform, it is highly recommended that X-Rite conduct an on-site evaluation of colour-related work processes, including an assessment of the devices being utilized. This will not only identify areas where an XRGA upgrade will reduce colour variation, it will

also allow companies to refine overall colour-related processes, thereby gaining competitive differentiation in the marketplace. In addition, if operations have a Pantone workflow in place, XRGA compliance is an absolute requirement. An X-Rite assessment and implementation of recommended actions often results in less wastage and higher satisfaction levels among top tier customers. It also prepares the organisation for future enhancements and workflows that may be required by future acquisition of new instrumentation, more stringent customer requirements, and/or by updates to ISO and other standards. Ink suppliers will also want to consider working with X-Rite to define a new center point based on XRGA and begin the process of mapping old data

to new data. This will ensure that ink formulations, both existing and new, align across the full product line. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or third-party developers who embed X-Rite technology in their products can also work with X-Rite to analyze existing conditions within the product portfolio and installed base, and develop a plan to roll the newer technology out to customers, especially those who have larger installed bases and/or are producing colour critical applications. Contact: devsupport@xrite.com for more details if you are an OEM/ developer. Summary XRGA will benefit the colour network by ensuring alignment of colour measurements provided by instruments being utilized across the

entire printing or packaging supply chain. It globally unifies all master metrology, better controlling the data these colour instruments provide and interconnecting with various actors in the supply chain. XRGA gives you the confidence that you are ready for adoption of new standards such as ISO 13655. XRGA is a critical component in the journey from inspiration to product delivery, and is one of the factors that connects the art and science of colour. The adoption of XRGA by industry organizations and suppliers beyond X-Rite will make the impact of that critical component on the colour supply chain even greater.

Digitizing the Orient – Singapore printer installs Xeikon 3030 Label & Package Printing Press

In its search for cutting-edge label printing technologies that both aid production efficiency and provide quality in print, Singapore-based Orient Quality Print Pte Ltd selected Xeikon’s high-performing digital printing technology as the best solution. reduce cost and the ease of material inventory control,” said Mr Alex Tan, CEO of Orient Quality Print. “The efficiencies and benefits are phenomenal and we couldn’t be happier!” he added. Josep Roca, Area sales manager for Asia comments: “We are delighted that Orient in Singapore embraces the Xeikon 3030. They are living proof that after Europe and North America, Asia is now embracing the label and packaging digital printing presses from Xeikon. To support this trend, 2 active service hubs are installed in the region with engineers operating out of Singapore and India” A relatively young printer-converter, Orient Quality Print is involved in intermittent letterpress and label finishing, producing labels for different vertical markets including the health and beauty, food and industrial segments. The Singaporean label and packaging printer needed a print solution that would cater to the growing trend of variable content, extremely short lead times and high lightfastness colors, while gaining production efficiency in Singapore’s high-cost labour market. Realizing that digital print was the only way forward, Orient Quality Print made sure to be the first commercial printer to offer this highly productive solution to its market. The company owners Mr Alex Tan, Mr J Te & Mr Ben Chua evaluated different digital printing brands available in the industry for several months and eventually confirmed Xeikon to be the best investment choice that would bring a good ROI (Return on Investment). The full rotary direct printing press gave Orient Quality Print the capability to print extra-long labels – essential for

the industrial labels it prints. Xeikon toners’ very high lightfastness (6 to 8 on the blue wool scale) is also vital for certain types of applications which the printer-converter runs. Through CGS Pte Ltd, the sole authorised partner of Xeikon International BV for Singapore and Malaysia, Orient Quality Print ordered a complete Xeikon 3030 digital printing system. In October 2012, the Xeikon 3030 line was installed by specialists from Xeikon International and the CGS trained technical team, and the system was in full production status in just three weeks, operating full 24-hour shifts on an almost 24/7 basis. Orient Print Quality runs the Xeikon press in a roll to roll configuration, and handles the finishing process offline. “We were really impressed by Xeikon 3030 extremely fast start-up during production, print quality, colour stability throughout the production run, low material wastage, highly efficient daily files handling and use of standard / non-pre-treated substrates allow us to

Combining productivity and quality benefits The Xeikon 3030 is a member of the high performing Xeikon 3000 Series of five-color digital label presses, which was launched in 2010. Utilizing LED-arraybased,dry-toner electrophotography, the Xeikon 3030 is standard-equipped with five color stations - four for the standard process colors, while the 5th allows the use of spot colors, security toner, or opaque white to create a desired ‘no-label look’ on transparent labels. It features true 1200 x 3600 dpi addressability and quality, and runs at a maximum speed of 9,6m/min at 5 colors, and at a maximum web width of 330mm. Print speed is unaffected by the number of colors used, nor by the repeat length of the job. The digital press runs on Xeikon’s QA-I toner, that allows for substrate use without specific pre-treatment and is compliant with FDA food-approval regulations. An entry-level printing technology, the Xeikon 3030 can be easily upgraded on site to a higher speed (Xeikon 3300) or a higher speed and wider web (Xeikon 3500) without making any concession on print quality.

Since that time over 1200 printing units and more than 250 presses in the Speedmaster SM/SX 52 Anicolor series have been installed globally. Benefits of the Anicolor can be summed up as "90:50:50" - which means that Anicolor inking unit technology results in 90 percent less paper waste, which first and foremost benefits the environment, 50 percent shorter makeready times, and 50 percent higher productivity. Thanks to extremely fast and stable inking-

Speedmaster SM52-4L Anicolor press at xPrint Sdn Bhd up, OK sheets are often achieved after just ten sheets, and all this with optimum offset quality and maximum user-friendliness. The Anicolor press is available in configurations from four to ten colors with perfecting device and UV technology. What's more, the press is ideal for web-to-print applications with mixed forms that require simple standardization and consistently high quality, which is the case for xPrint. Mr. Teh said the service and support provided by Heidelberg has been a tremendous benefit to xPrint. “Heidelberg’s trained professionals deliver a high quality service. The installation was seamless and the training of our staff was very good. Plus the after sales service and support from Heidelberg is valued by us”. “Our vision is not confined to Malaysia. Whether it is for brochure, booklet or business card printing, our green printing service soars as high as your eye can see, with print and distribution services across Asia. The Anicolor press has already allowed us to expand our market and produce a greater number of jobs. I am very excited about the future opportunities for xPrint and we now have the right press to meet our objectives,” concluded Mr. Teh.

KBA demonstrates packaging solutions in medium and large formats In February, some 30 packaging printers from Great Britain joined a corresponding delegation from South Korea at the KBA facility in Radebeul near Dresden to get information on the latest trends in the printing and finishing of packaging products. The group included a number of representatives from international packaging companies, such as Chesapeake, but also printers who have not used KBA technology to date.

for increased pile heights. After production at full press speed with a 350 g/m2 GD2 board, a job using heavy display board with a thickness of almost 1 mm was printed at 13,000 sph and finished with drip-off effect coating (oil-based overprint varnish through the last inking unit and gloss dispersion coating in the coater). Here, again, the presentation spotlighted the fully automatic non-stop and logistics systems which are already well proven with KBA Rapida users out in the field.

The first of the print demonstrations presented by KBA head of sheetfed marketing JĂźrgen Veil took place on a six-colour Rapida 145 with inline coater. This large-format press from the newest generation could be seen in operation at speeds of up to 17,000 sph with 250 and 600 g/m2 substrates. The highlights included a fast job changeover with simultaneous plate changing using DriveTronic SPC, and different coating effects based on the latest UV technology from KBA. The switch from a dispersion coating for the first job to matt-gloss special effects for the second was accomplished in next to no time, despite requiring also conversion from conventional to UV coating in the coater tower. Another feature catering for situations typical in packaging printing: Non-stop pile

changing at the feeder and delivery, in combination with fully automatic substrate logistics. For the next demonstrations, the group moved on to a six-colour Rapida 106 coater press with a raised foundation

The guests were then treated to the ultimate in product refinement on a sixcolour Rapida 106 in a double-coating configuration with inline ColdFoiler unit. After simple dispersion coating, a five-colour folding carton for hair colouring was refined by adding a cold-foil finish. The special feature of this process is the optimisation of foil application by way of web splitting (division into several narrower ribbons, which can then be aligned precisely to the areas of the printed sheet requiring foil) and MFU (= multiple foil use): The foil web runs through the impression gap several times, and thus minimises foil consumption by reducing the area which is left unused. But even this sophisticated configuration is today not the maximum of what is feasible, as explained by KBA sales manager Roland Gebauer and illustrated with the example of a Rapida 106 comprising 19 printing and finishing units at Amcor Tobacco Packaging in Switzerland.

Extends its presence across Malaysia with Suzuki network Libroff’s new point-of-sale platform has taken off and its position sealed with the automotive industry in Malaysia. Ziad Fazaruddin, Head of Dealer Development at Suzuki Malaysia Automobile Sdn Bhd, shares his insights with Libroff’s products. Christel Lee reports.

If you are close to concluding typical billboards and banners stamped from print are obsolete, you stand to be corrected. Malaysian Book of Records award winner, Libroff Sdn Bhd, is one of the leading companies in Malaysia specialising in LED frameless lightboxes, which are among the most popular forms of indoor & outdoor advertising today.

Automobile Sdn Bhd is Libroff ’s latest satisfied customer with LED light box displays.

Managing Director, Dato Maarof, is quick to clarify print is not obsolete. “We haven’t discarded print! In fact we are still printing on our Agfa Jeti 3324 Solvent RTR and Jeti UV Galaxy RTR. However, it’s pertinent to be innovative to keep up with the times,” he notes.

Ziad Fazaruddin, Head of Network Development at Suzuki Malaysia, says: “Libroff approached us with an idea of illuminated display signs to replace our conventional buntings. It was hard to visualize initially, and we were apprehensive – not knowing how it would result. It turned out to be a good idea and we have implemented it on our service centres nationwide. It’s vivid, visible and we have received tremendous feedback from our dealers as well, not to mention minimal investments involved!

Today, Libroff Sdn Bhd stands tall with a major milestone achieved, and it’s through Japanese-made automotive brand, Suzuki. Suzuki Malaysia

“A notable feature of this light box is that our visuals are produced on fabrics. Combine that with LED lighting and it’s a whole world of difference in

comparison to typical fluorescent light boxes with paper visuals. Additionally, we are free to replace the visuals whenever deemed fit to synchronise with our marketing plans and that gives us maximum flexibility to customise our campaigns. “This new point-of-sale display platform will help to further enhance the promotion awareness at showrooms and service centres by 'illuminating' and highlighting the promotion/image on the fabric canvas display,” he highlights. Dato Maarof concludes, “We are very happy to be have been able to be part of Suzuki’s marketing campaigns. Times have changed for marketers and this new milestone corroborates the importance of innovation for customers.”

duomedia, a leading agency specializing in public relations and marketing communications for the graphic arts, industrial, and technology markets conducted a survey in the fourth quarter of 2012 to gain insight from key consultants in the graphic arts industry. The results of this international survey make it absolutely clear that print must adapt in order to continue to play a crucial role in the communications mix. Print professionals and influencers from 10 countries shared their expert opinions on how print will evolve in the digital age, in this study conducted by pan-European communications agency, duomedia.

printed brochure, he needs a solution to convey his message to his (potential) customers. Identifying the real needs of their customers, will lead to new and interesting offerings. I recently spotted a simple but very effective example of this solutions-oriented mindset: a printer solved the number one issue of a small winery - missed sales - by simply changing the layout of the label.

Lutt Willems, partner at duomedia, comments: “The duomedia end-of-year survey provides an accurate snapshot of the status of the print industry. By soliciting the opinions of professionals and influencers from around the globe, we can help print houses identify the most important areas of focus to drive revenue and to ensure that print remains a highly effective component of the cross-media communication mix.”

A small change with a big impact. Of course, a change in mindset means investing time and resource. But it’s well worth the effort if it means your company is seen as a high-value link in the marketing and product development chain rather than as just a supplier of printed paper or of printed packaging. This industry will evolve

Moving from a manufacturing to a service industry Many survey respondents identified the need for print houses to adopt a new strategy. They urged printers to go beyond being just a supplier, and to work more closely with customers and brands to establish themselves as value-addedservice providers in the marketing and communication supply chain. Eddy Hagen, Director and Trendwatcher at VIGC (Flemish organisation for Graphic Communication), comments: “Print houses need to change their mindset and focus on offering solutions and services rather than selling products. A marketing manager doesn't need a

from a product industry to a solutions and services industry.” Print on-demand is in demand Many survey respondents flagged the growing trend for short-run, ondemand work, which is being facilitated by advances in digital printing technology. High volume printing will decrease over time as more print is produced on demand. A perfect example of why shortrun, on-demand work is proving so popular are school books. It doesn’t make economic sense to hold on to thousands of copies when it’s highly likely they’ll need updating before too long. With digital, the school can print as many copies as they need, when they need them, and be able to update content as needed to keep educational materials as relevant as possible. A market for print products with added value Respondents highlighted that there are growth opportunities in producing products to which people attach a new function, an added value or an emotional value, such as photos.

Sheetfed Offset URLs or augmented reality; there are a variety of ways to make print interactive and blend it more seamlessly with digital communications strategies. According to Cary Sherburne, Senior Editor at WhatTheyThink, “Printers view digital alternatives to print as a threat and worry about cannibalization of their printing business. The truth is, this cannibalization will continue to happen, with them or without them. Making print interactive will extend the life and value of print, and it’s not that hard to do. Additionally, adding value by supplementing a printed brochure with a tablet or smartphone app that overlays rich content such as audio, video and more, can add high margin revenue streams and increase customer loyalty.”

Ed Boogaard, freelance journalist in the printing industry, believes some people will always value print over digital: “For example, for many people, printed photos hold a special place. Looking back at pictures on a laptop just isn’t the same as seeing them in an album or photo book. Also magazines

will become more and more functional for people, especially with the trend towards short run printing.” Making Print Interactive Whether you are talking about magazines, commercial print or packaging, QR Codes, personalized

Packaging and labelling sector to continue growing Those surveyed predicted that while commercial print volume will continue falling, the opposite is true for packaging and label printing. As one respondent summed up: “No matter how much digital evolves, you can’t download an ice cream. You’re always going to need packaging.” But with environmentalists pushing for ever-smaller packaging, does this

Print World Asia • 3/2013

Sheetfed Offset 35 mean a smaller market? Not necessarily, according to one respondent. “You only have to look at Easter eggs to see how packaging has shrunk. But this doesn’t spell the end for packaging printers – it just means there’s more emphasis on creative packaging. Packaging designers and producers can add value to brands’ products by producing creative, attractive packaging, despite having a much smaller ‘canvas’ to work on.” Sustainability - a crucial battleground According to the survey, sustainability will become even more important, with brands using their green credentials to glean a competitive edge. To this end, respondents suggested that all companies operating in paperbased industries should be more vocal in communicating their sustainability accreditations and initiatives, particularly as digital-based companies will come under greater environmental scrutiny in future than they are today. Among the public, paper is still seen as the ‘bad guy’, despite the fact that paper production isn’t nearly as harmful to the planet as people think. The U.S. grows more trees than it harvests, for example. By comparison, digital gets a much easier ride because many people are totally unaware of the environmental impact of electronic waste. Paper industries can turn this

situation to their advantage. They’ve been defending their position for so long, they’ve a host of sustainable initiatives that prove their commitment to greener practises.

collaboration among everyone in the print supply chain in order to sell the benefits of paper communication, because most printers don't know how to do this.

Education and embracing digital is key to a brighter print future A common theme that ran throughout the survey was a greater need for everyone in the print industry to spread the word on the latest developments in print technology. This means closer

Ed Boogaard adds that resisting digital is futile: “There’s no point fighting digital. It’s here to stay. Print and digital can certainly co-exist and complement each other. Print houses and suppliers should focus on areas where paper and print can play an important role and add value in ways that digital can’t.” About duomedia Founded in 1999, duomedia’s mission is to create visibility, awareness and market share for its clients through a cross-media multichannel approach. Integrated Inkjet for Germany After a development phase with manroland web systems, Axel Springer launches its business model nationwide Inkjet: “integrated by manroland web systems.” manroland web systems supplies the engineering, project management, installation, and start-up expertise for newspaper presses.

manroland web systems has received an order from Axel Springer AG for 19 additional Integrated Inkjet installations. The publishing house has decided to equip its newspaper presses with inkjet imprint systems at all German sites. Integrated Inkjet, the application for variable-data imprinting in newspaper production, is on its way to becoming a true broad-based solution. manroland web systems is at the forefront of this development with the company’s Integrated Inkjet technology; Axel Springer AG is its first pilot user. The Berlin-based media conglomerate will now equip all of its newspaper presses with a total of 33 inkjet installations. manroland web systems will integrate the majority, a total of 23 units including previous orders, in existing

press equipment at nine Springer printing sites. This order marks a crowning achievement in a successful development partnership, as Anton Hamm, Vice President Service and printcom at manroland web systems, explains: “We are so pleased to have come this far in our partnership with Axel Springer. By working together, we were able to develop the ideal inkjet solution as part of pilot projects in Ahrensburg and Berlin-Spandau. With this experience we will be able to quickly upgrade the rest of our customer’s presses and support the new business model.” For manroland web systems, this cooperation has resulted in the development of patented processes that include numerous applications in newspaper printing. Inkjet expands business model

Thanks to the inkjet applications, Springer can increase the added value of its newspaper products. Lotteries, breaking news, tailor-made ads, and cross-media applications are attractive for both readers and advertisers, and help stabilize runs. In production, Integrated Inkjet ensures accurately positioned imprints without a loss in speed, added waste, or longer changeover times. However, the quality of the technology is not the only crucial factor. Models such as the Prosper S30 inkjet system from Kodak need to be optimally integrated in the production workflow and operating concept. Integrated Inkjet accomplishes this thanks to the implementation of two modules: The automation module lays the foundation for electronic and softwarerelated requirements, and the web lead module ensures the constructive, mechanical, and technical adjustment of the web lead. Automation focuses on inkjet software integrated in the operating concept. It bundles the requirements and commands of key components such as the control console with multi-touchscreen, the central encoder for speed, and the SmartCam mark reader. The software transmits resulting control commands to the imprint system from Kodak. manroland webs systems has produced an open solution, a welcome development for the industry: Integrated Inkjet is available for all newspaper and commercial presses, regardless of model or manufacturer.

Web Offset Technology

KBA RotaJET with convincing print quality and performance Boasting a raft of technical advancements and in the meantime fully operational, the RotaJET 76 inkjet web press unveiled by Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) at Drupa just nine months ago was also able to convince the audience on its first appearance at the Hunkeler Innovation Days in Lucerne.

Given the relatively short development lead time, the prototype of the KBA RotaJET was still not able to demonstrate its full print quality prowess at Drupa, but the intervening months since the fair have seen some decisive optimisation of the ink feed, ink system, screening and colour management. Thanks to very close and intensive cooperation with potential first users from the most varied market segments, the high-speed digital press is now ready for the market. In Lucerne, the KBA RotaJET gave live proof that it has more than bridged any gap to the competition. KBA has also received similar feedback from interested printers who have tested the print quality with jobs of their own either at KBA or other digital print providers. A new rewinder and a new, even more efficient IR/hot-air drying system – both in-house developments from KBA – enhance overall performance and were already integrated into the RotaJET to be seen in Lucerne. New polymer-based ink reduces capillary effect An important share in the vastly improved print quality is due to the newly developed polymer-based pigment ink RotaColor. Compared to conventional inks, it significantly reduces the capillary effect (penetration of the pigments into the paper), and that translates immediately into exact print and reduced print-through. KBA is the first manufacturer to use the new polymer-based ink in a highvolume inkjet system. According to the KBA experts, the new ink extends the

High-speed inkjet compact: On a stand measuring just 91 m², the KBA RotaJET 76 gave proof not only of its minimal footprint (10.5 x 6 m), but also of its high quality and performance potential in book and newspaper production at the Hunkeler Innovation Days printable range of untreated papers and offers considerable potential for further quality advances and cost savings in the future. This was also demonstrated admirably by the variety of products printed at the Hunkeler Innovation Days. Project manager Oliver Baar: “We have kept the promises we gave to those interested in the press at Drupa. The KBA RotaJET is now well prepared for daily print production.” Superior precision engineering … KBA sees essential advantages for the RotaJET 76 compared to competitor products in its precision engineering and the exact web travel. That is the basis for very accurate front-to-back and colour register, for example. The possibility to print during acceleration and deceleration of the press also brings a noticeable reduction in waste. KBA marketing director Klaus Schmidt: “It

was for good reason that we decided to rely on our own wealth of press engineering and print technology know-how for the RotaJET, rather than simply relabelling one of the many OEM products on the market. KBA customers expect a press which stands up to the tough demands of industrial use, and at the same time does its job reliably, precisely and with ultimate availability even when operating at maximum capacity.” As one of the leading press manufacturers, KBA will naturally pursue the topics of print quality and substrate flexibility further, and plans to bring high-speed inkjet printing as close as possible to offset. The medium-term objective is maximum flexibility for the users, enabling them to serve not just a limited market segment, but rather the full spectrum of today's print products

Web Offset Technology The RotaJET 76 on show in Lucerne was paired up with the newly developed KBA rewinder pages/month). And that for the press with the greatest output at the show in Lucerne. On the other hand, the small stand did underline the compact design of the RotaJET. Thanks to an intelligent web lead, the press and rewinder are together just 10.5 m long and 6 m wide. It would not have been possible to install other 4/4 presses of this performance class in such a small space.

with the RotaJET 76. This will involve also continued improvements with regard to process costs, full pageto-page content variability and the impressive format flexibility. The unique combination of capabilities embodied by the RotaJET make it an especially attractive alternative to other analogue and digital sheet printing systems for many applications. ... with interesting options for professionals The image of a digital print system built for professionals by professionals is upheld by the availability of a web remoistening unit and a coater. The automatic reelstand KBA Pastoline is another interesting option which is not available in this form from any competitor. With the facility for flying changes, the autosplicer lends a considerable boost to performance and can also be integrated into an automated paper logistics set-up with KBA Patras. High-speed inkjet printing with the RotaJET is in this way lifted to previously unknown levels of productivity. High-speed inkjet with a small footprint The KBA team was initially none too happy with the very limited space provided at the Hunkeler Innovation Days. As a newcomer, the company had been allocated an area of just 91 m² for its 25-tonne high-speed press (3,000 A4 pages/min.; 85 million A4

For its entry into the digital print market, KBA will at first be focussing on the target segments books, direct mailing, manuals, advertising, newsletters and newspapers. The live demonstrations of book production and a daily exhibition newspaper with original content from the “Neue Luzerner

Zeitung” were among the highlights of the show. The book sections were produced reel-to-reel on the RotaJET and then combined with ready-printed offset covers on a Hunkeler finishing line. The finishing of the exhibition newspaper was also handled by postpress systems from Hunkeler. The packaging and security printing segments are to be addressed later. One field which KBA excludes for the RotaJET, however, is the transaction and transpromo market which has evolved in the electronic business world. Printers interested in the new possibilities for digital print are offered break-even calculations and production scheduling analyses to assist their investment decision. The even more efficient IR/hot-air drying system – here a view under the covers – is likewise a new KBA development

Packaging Technology

LABELS ENHANCE BRAND VALUES AND CONSUMER EXPERIENCE Leading packaging solutions provider Payne has launched a range of holographic effect label finishes that offer a high impact and cost-effective means to integrate a high end finish to labels.

The new HoloSense effects enable eyecatching holographic-type patterns to be added to label designs, enhancing on-shelf presence and consumer appeal. They help to achieve added depth to colours and create a sense of movement that attracts attention on crowded retail shelves. Part of Payne’s Inform product range, the HoloSense technology can be incorporated into existing labels or included as part of a new design. Five distinctive patterns are available for the surface finish – Diagonal Stripe, Raindrops, Kaleidoscope, Mini Lens and Checkerboard and these special effects can be used either as an all-over design or on selective areas of the label. HoloSense is the first in a number of initiatives that Payne is taking in the development of label print technology which stimulates senses such as sight, touch and smell. It has been recognised that the incorporation of these types of enhancements can help to increase a brand’s impact by 70 per

promotes loyalty and adds value and we are building on this across our label and tape solutions at Payne to enable our customers to provide additional benefits to their consumers.”

As Payne’s managing director, Martin Dallas explains: “A label’s key role is to inform but this does not just mean practical information about a product. It is equally important that the label helps to create or reflect brand image, raise consumer expectations and encourage purchase. It is for this reason that many of our customers are asking more of their packaging and looking at additional ways to create value and meaning for the consumer.” Other sensory products that Payne is seeing greater interest in from customers include the variety of texturing and embossing techniques and scented labels. “We believe a wider sensory experience is a key part in enhancing the overall consumer experience for brands,” concludes Martin Dallas. “This

At RedEye On Demand, 3D Printed Cars Edge Closer to Production RedEye On Demand, a rapid prototyping and direct digital manufacturing service, and its parent company Stratasys, Ltd. today announce a collaboration with KOR EcoLogic to produce URBEE 2, the first road-ready, fuel-efficient car built using 3D printing, or additive manufacturing, technologies. Targeted to hit the road in two years, URBEE 2 represents a significant milestone in the world of traditional assembly-line manufacturing. "A future where 3D printers build cars may not be far off after all," said Jim Bartel, Stratasys vice president of RedEye On Demand. "Jim Kor and his team at KOR EcoLogic had a vision for a more fuel-efficient car that would change how the world approaches manufacturing and today we're achieving it. URBEE 2 shows the manufacturing world that anything really is possible. There are few design challenges additive manufacturing capabilities can't solve."

The KOR EcoLogic team will fully design URBEE 2 in CAD files, sending them to RedEye On Demand for building through Stratasys' Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process. This unique process applies thermoplastics in layers from the bottom up, yielding parts that are durable, precise and repeatable. The finished two-passenger vehicle will comprise 40 large, intricate 3D-printed parts compared to hundreds of parts in the average car. The strong, lightweight vehicle will be designed to go 70 mph on the freeway, using a biofuel like 100 percent ethanol. The goal is for URBEE 2 to drive from San Francisco to New York City on only 10 gallons of fuel, setting a new world record.

"As a mechanical engineer, I've always believed we could use technology to help us solve some of society's greatest challenges, like minimizing our dependence on oil and reducing ozone emissions. How cool is it that American manufacturing can evolve to tackle these challenges head-on? Our team is excited to launch URBEE 2, putting a next-generation vehicle on the road that will eventually be sold to the public," said Jim Kor, president and senior designer for Winnipeg-based KOR EcoLogic. URBEE 2, which stands for urban electric, follows in the tracks of its conceptual predecessor, Urbee 1. Produced in 2011 as a partnership

between KOR EcoLogic, Stratasys and RedEye On Demand, Urbee 1 proved that 3D printing could in fact produce large, strong parts that meet accurate specifications of a car body. URBEE 2 will take the basic concepts of Urbee 1 to a higher level, including features like a fully functioning heater, windshield wipers and mirrors.

RedEye On Demand of Stratasys Ltd collaborates with KOR EcoLogic to produce URBEE 2

"With the Urbee 1 project, I learned that product design is nearly unencumbered by considerations on how parts can be made with digital manufacturing. That liberation is incredibly powerful and holds a lot of potential for the future of manufacturing," said Kor. RedEye On Demand, by Stratasys, makes prototyping and the production of low-volume, complex parts fast and easy. RedEye assists engineers in all phases of product development from conceptual modeling to the production of end-use parts. As the leader in on-demand, 3D printing services and powered by the innovation of Stratasys, product developers rely on RedEye for the breadth and reach of its manufacturing technologies. These technologies include Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), PolyJet, cast urethane molding and injection molding. RedEye's global distributive manufacturing network includes more than 140 additive manufacturing systems worldwide. Through its vast network, RedEye is able to streamline and expedite the development time for parts, reducing costs and time to market. Online at RedEyeOnDemand. com

First Eurobind Pro installed in Asia C.T. Bindery, situated on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is the first company in Asia to install the Heidelberg EuroBind Pro, the high performance binder that is known as “the professional marathon runner” amongst adhesive binders due to its speed, high level of automation, flexibility and robust design. To celebrate the installation, Heidelberg Malaysia and C.T. Bindery hosted an Open House in November to showcase the new machine. More than 100 guests representing 40 companies witnessed the ribbon cutting ceremony and were given the opportunity to see the new machine in action. The Open House included the live production of an actual customer job, and the speed, quality and accuracy of the completed books impressed those gathered. During the Open House, the Chairman of C.T. Group, Mr. Subramaniam said he was impressed with the total commitment and support from Heidelberg Malaysia that C.T. Bindery received throughout the process. He stated that the support from Heidelberg would help drive C.T. Bindery to the next level in becoming a modern binding house

with the latest technology and automation. He concluded by recommending Heidelberg as a supplier of not only presses, but also high performance equipment for professional binderies.

CT Bindery is one of the leading trade binders in Malaysia specializing in soft cover books with run lengths starting at 1,000 copies up to 100,000. The EuroBind Pro replaced two aging Muller Martini/Wohlenberg binders. The EuroBind Pro delivers the highest monthly book output of all Heidelberg binders and is expected to increase the company’s overall output by 250 percent. Mr. Keith Patten, Regional Business Manager Postpress Commercial said, “Although this installation is in its infancy, the combined efforts of C.T. Bindery and the Heidelberg team have already made this installation one of the most productive EuroBind Pro binders anywhere in the world. C.T. Bindery has Managing Director of C.T.Bindery, Mr.Subramaniam and Mr. Bent Serritslev, Managing Director of Heidelberg Malaysia Singapore at the ribbon cutting

Finishing Technology been able to produce an output of approximately 800,000 books per month with over 300 job changes recorded in the same period, which is impressive”. “The high performance and ultra fast make-ready of the EuroBind Pro lend themselves perfectly to today’s market where run lengths and time to deliver become increasingly shorter. Trade binders such as C.T. Bindery need to offer a very fast turnaround, often with jobs that the bindery will only have contracted days and sometimes hours ahead of production. The need to have flexible production combined with high performance have never been greater,” said Mr. Patten. He continued. “Of course productivity and flexibility are the keys to success, but it must not be forgotten that whilst cost to produce is paramount, customers still demand high quality and again the EuroBind Pro delivers”. The EuroBind Pro can be equipped as a hot melt version, PUR version or a hybrid configuration with both systems incorporated, allowing the operator to switch almost seamlessly between them. The high level of automation allows the EuroBind Pro to optimize settings and return to these settings during re-runs. Designed for multishift operation, the EuroBind Pro reliably delivers high productivity and consistently high quality especially with inline-finished products. The EuroBind Pro is extremely cost-effective and with a high level of automation, super-fast make ready and unique ease of operation, it can significantly reduce waste and speed up time to market.

Using servo drive technology, the EuroBind Pro permits setting changes to be made on the run as well as pre-setting for the next job. For example if the current job running is not using all of

the gathering stations, the idle stations can be pre-set for the next job, reducing make-ready times even further and speeding up production times. During the Open House Mr. Bent Serritslev, Managing Director Heidelberg Malaysia Singapore highlighted the data recorded from C.T. Bindery’s EuroBind Pro comparing it to the worldwide EuroBind Pro installation base. After being in operation for only a short period, C.T. Bindery’s EuroBind Pro had already achieved the highest monthly books production in the world at around 800,000 books, the second highest monthly production hours in the world, and produced 300 different book formats a month.

Great Interest in the Presto II Digital At the Hunkeler Innovationdays trade fair in Lucerne Muller Martini produced three different print products live and without interruption using a Presto II Digital saddle stitcher. Paul M. Wasanga, CEO of the Kenya National Examination Council, is convinced that “such inline systems are what the market needs”.

With high-performance inkjet digital printing establishing itself in the field of high-quality color printing too and sizes of print runs for magazines, journals and brochures continuing to fall, Muller Martini presented the Presto II Digital to trade visitors in Lucerne as a new industrial finishing solution for digitally printed products. Three different products were produced live

Wasanga considers it “a highly innovative solution that saves on a lot of space”. According to the CEO of the Kenya National Examination Council in Nairobi, who visited the Hunkeler Innovationdays for the first time, the market is in need of precisely such inline systems. “Digital printing alone is not efficient enough – it requires the right finishing for the seamless completion of print products. When I see solutions like the Presto II Digital, I am convinced that there is still potential for digitally printed, saddle-stitched products.” There is no question that new printing technologies will be successful, according to Patrick Douglas-Meis of PDM International in Toronto, who made the trip from Canada to attend the trade fair in Lucerne: “Digital printing is growing rapidly, and anyone who isn’t focusing on it will pay for it later – and that time will come earlier than they expect.” The printing expert with many years of experience at large

graphic arts businesses believes that the Hunkeler Innovationdays trade fair presented an ideal opportunity to gain an overview of the technical state of the art: “There was a lot of expertise concentrated in a small space, with many decision-makers in attendance, including from abroad.” “Saddle Stitching for Digital Printing Will Continue to Gain in Importance” That is why Petr Romanov, Chief Technologist at JSC First Model Printing House in Moscow, spent four days at the trade fair in Lucerne: “Unlike drupa, where the entire spectrum of the graphic arts industry is present, at the Hunkeler Innovationdays I specifically studied digital solutions and could take a more detailed look at various machines. Technicians from various manufacturers took their time to explain their systems in detail.” JSC First Model Printing House already produces digitally printed hardcover and softcover books on a SigmaLine, consisting of a SigmaFolder and SigmaCollator. The products

are finished on a Diamant MC 60 bookline and a Ventura MC book sewing machine from Muller Martini as well as on an older perfect binder. “I came to Lucerne to find out about the options offered by saddle stitching for digital printing, since I’m confident that this market will continue to gain in importance.” Quasi Selective Binding Dragan Volic, Marketing Director for Print Finishing Systems at Muller Martini, feels that the trade fair has been highly successful: “I’m very satisfied with the high quality of visitors and the great interest in our solution. Muller Martini has clearly confirmed its position as market leader in the finishing of digital print products by expanding its range of digital solutions with a flexible saddle stitcher.” According to Adrian Mayr, “many visitors to our stand are surprised by the wide range in the number of digitally printed signatures that can be processed on the Presto II Digital without interruption”. The Muller Martini Product Manager points out

AIRDOT Ä C XY      

that the saddle stitching systems from Muller Martini have attracted a lot of attention, in particular the individual feeding of different covers as well as the feeding of conventionally printed signatures. “With the barcode system (AsirCode), which is used to switch the signatures in and out from product to product, we virtually offered selective binding.” Many customers have also been impressed by the configuration of the saddle stitcher with two length folds. This solution, which is one of a kind on the market, enables a high net output in small sizes (A6) in two-up production. Visitors to the trade fair from all over the world were not only interested in the live production at Muller Martini’s stand, but also by the Connex data and process management system presented there. Connex really comes into its own if the saddle stitcher is used as a fully integrated inline solution (digital printing with finishing), as it ensures seamless interplay and optimum control of all aggregates.

A new era of packaging production with cutting-edge technology The leading Swiss packaging manufacturer has embraced digital production through the installation of an Inca Onset S40 printer, and is the beta site for Fujifilm’s new Uvijet OC inks for corrugated applications. Model Holding AG is the holding company of Model Group, a well established family owned business. Founded in 1882 as a small mill board factory, the company soon found its niche in the production of corrugated board and industrial packaging. Today Model Group is led by the fourth generation of the founder’s family and has his head office in Weinfelden, Switzerland, and over 16 subsidiaries and production sites spread across eight other countries in Europe. Model Group is prominent in the packaging business and boasts more than 3000 employees, 550 of which are based in Weinfelden. In 2011, the group produced 619 million m2 of corrugated board, as well as 26,300 tonnes of cardboard packaging and 284,200 tonnes of container board. The corporate HQ in Weinfelden is the flagship corrugated board plant. Here lies one of the company’s outstanding Innovation and Competence Centers (ICC), where all the technical expertise is directed into new packaging developments to keep Model at the forefront in its field. Over the years Model has built a strong reputation in a variety of markets such as food & beverage, cosmetics and automotive. Blue-chip multinationals like Unilever, L’Oreal, Nestle’ and Kraft trust Model as a competent supplier able to satisfy the most demanding requests through a holistic and consultative approach. Cardboard and corrugated board are treated as the raw materials for creative output at Model. The company of-

fers a comprehensive range of services from design to manufacture, through the filling and set up of displays and boxes, and including the disposal and recycling of waste cardboard and corrugated board. Thanks to the perfect combination of substrates, print and finishing techniques, Model’s specialists can devise unique products to meet specific customer needs. In the pursuit of flexibility Model Group had historically based its production on offset and flexo equipment. Offline and in-line flexo machines are currently operating within the HQ but 10 years ago the ICC at Weinfelden started to investigate digital print, recognising that it was an upand-coming production method. After initially outsourcing to a digital partner, in 2008 Model installed its first entry level inkjet flatbed device to cut its teeth with this technology. Edoardo Finotti, head of Model ICC,

explains: “In the last few years the importance of digital print has grown steadily. There is an increasing demand for short run and personalised products, as well as strong pressure to reduce costs; digital print perfectly suits those requirements. Model prides itself on being innovative and in tune with the market’s demands, and as a leading packaging manufacturer we didn’t want to lag behind in terms of digital innovation.” Since 2008 Model has been monitoring the latest developments in digital printing in order to find the most productive, high quality and reliable technology to fulfil the high standards required by the packaging industry. It found the answer to these stringent demands in a wide-format flat-bed Inca Onset S40 inkjet printer supplied by Fujifilm. “Quality is an undisputed priority for Model and we were extremely im-

pressed by the photographic-like images delivered by the Onset S40. What’s more, this print engine is a workhorse which guarantees extraordinary productivity and fits perfectly into our workflow,” says Edoardo. He adds: “The Onset S40 takes the flexibility typical of digital print to the highest level. This machine allows us to create limited and bespoke packs and displays with increased efficiency, as it doesn’t require set up times or prepress. It has helped us to diversify our production and has given us the opportunity to choose to go digital, whenever appropriate, depending on the job.” The Inca Onset S40 prints at up to 470 m2/hr and provides ‘best-in-class’ quality and flexibility at a low cost per print. The Onset S40 can print directly onto substrates up to 50mm thick to create exquisite displays and packaging solutions. This digital inkjet flatbed platform meets high-volume and fastturnaround production needs thanks to 168 user-replaceable printheads (28 per colour) on a full width print bar delivering a 27 picolitre drop size. These features, combined with Inca's precision ink drop placement, produce superb 600 dpi print quality with the option of four or six colours. A brand new digital department Following the purchase of the Onset S40 in May 2012, Model has built a dedicated digital department within its extensive plant in Weinfelden. Out of 20 operators working in print production, four have been allocated to the management of the S40 on a three shift basis. In addition, Model has recently invested in a Zund G3 digital cutting plotter which has been placed alongside the Onset S40. Edoardo Finotti comments: “We are committed to achieving a fully automated and end-to-end digital workflow. We are focused on the fine tuning between print and finishing devices and currently we are using both the Zund digital cutting plotter and a traditional die cutting machine to keep up with different production requirements.” What’s more, Model is working closely

with Fujifilm as a beta site to test and help in the development of the company’s brand-new Uvijet OC inks for corrugated applications. Edoardo explains: “Fujifilm’s reputation in the R&D of advanced imaging and colour solutions is beyond compare. Its ongoing investment in the research of high performance inks and technologies was pivotal to our decision making process. We are pleased to be on the front line with Fujifilm to help in the formulation of the most appropriate inks for the extremely demanding packaging & display market.” He adds: “Not only do Fujifilm’s Uvijet OC inks deliver excellent performance in the POP and display market, but also they represent a breakthrough in the packaging sector. We are working closely with Fujifilm to achieve the best possible quality and push the boundaries of these innovative inks to provide our customers with outstanding packaging solutions.” A reputable brand and a digital future Edoardo emphasises how Fujifilm’s service perfectly complements the unquestionable quality and productivity of the Onset S40. “Fujifilm is not only a leading supplier whose investments in technology improvements are endless and significant, but it’s also a flexible partner to work with. We have absolute

confidence in the brand and the people behind it. Both the sales and technical managers have never let us down. Once, we experienced a problem on a Friday, with an urgent delivery on a Monday - Fujifilm’s service was prompt and we met our deadline.” Thanks to its dynamic approach and the support of valuable suppliers such as Fujifilm, Model has a positive outlook on the future. Building on the introduction of the digital production department, the company has also launched a web to print platform called ‘Model Pack Shop’. This web-shop allows buyers to submit repeat orders quickly and efficiently through the simple scanning of QR codes placed on boxes and displays previously supplied by Model. Whether for short runs of standard packaging or more complex orders, Model Pack Shop is another digital route Model has embarked on. Edoardo Finotti concludes: “For us, digital is the future. Today, digital print is nothing more than a small percentage of our business, while Model Pack Shop is just a tool within a traditional working environment. Nevertheless, we are confident both digital technologies will thrive as they are excellent solutions that allow us to compete in a fast evolving market.”

News The chemical has raised questions before - mainly whether exposure to it can predispose people to a range of health problems including reproductive and immune system disorders, cancer and obesity. Food Standards Australia New Zealand says an "extremely large amount" of food and drink would need to be consumed to even reach a tolerable daily intake for BPA.

Packaging chemical may affect embryos, say US scientists A chemical commonly found in food and drink packaging has the potential to affect embryonic brain development, say US scientists. The chemical, Bisphenol A, can be found in the lining of food and drink packaging, including some plastic bottles and in the lining of metal cans. It is used to protect against contamination and extend the content's shelf life. Known as BPA, the chemical has also been found in some baby bottles. Last year the federal government announced a voluntary phase-out of BPA use in polycarbonate baby bottles.

the amounts of BPA studied did not reflect normal consumption rates. Neuroendocrinologist Wah Chin Boon from the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health said the dosage used in the study was 20 times higher than the amount approved by Australian, New Zealand and American food standards bodies. "The approved level is a lot higher than what someone would consume anyway, so it is very unlikely someone would consume that volume," Dr Boon said. Australia, New Zealand and America have the same maximum consumption standard for BPA at 50 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day.

Outlined in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Tuesday, the study got pregnant mice to ingest the chemical and then studied the neurons from the offspring to establish the effect of BPA on brain development. Advertisement

The American study used 10 milligrams per kilogram per day. "I don't think a person could consume that much," she said. A senior lecturer at Adelaide University's faculty of medicine, Dr Ian Musgrave, agreed, saying while the research threw light on aspects of gene regulation, it was not relevant to human exposure to the chemical.

"Our study found that BPA may impair the development of the central nervous system," said neurologist and lead author Wolfgang Liedtke from Duke University. "[It] raises the question as to whether exposure could predispose animals and humans to neurodevelopmental disorders."

But Dr Boon said as a scientific study, it was useful to learn about the mechanisms at play because while BPA has been shown to affect the developing nervous system, little is known about how this occurs.

The chemical was capable of oppressing a gene vital to nerve cell function and to the development of the central nervous system. However local researchers said

"This research shows that if the dose is high enough it can shut down the sodium channel, which is important for brain development" she said.

A survey by consumer group Choice found that a nine-month old baby weighing nine kilograms would have to eat more than one kilogram of canned baby custard containing BPA each day to reach the tolerable level. And that was assuming the custard contained the highest level of the chemical. Peter Kuisle, member of the Management Board manroland web systems, says: “India is a strong market with a promising growth potential and deserves our utmost dedication and attention. We are very pleased we could gain Mr Bhasin with his wide-ranging know-how as Managing Director for this important market organization.” KBA plans acquisition in growing flexible packaging market Healthy finances make it possible for Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) to invest in growth markets. Following the entry into the promising digital print market at Drupa 2012 with an inkjet web press produced at KBA’s main plant in Würzburg, the takeover of Flexotecnica in Tavazzano, near Milan, signals the entry into the growing print market for flexible packaging (especially films). Flexotecnica is a subsidiary of Officine Meccaniche G. Cerutti (OMGC), an Italian company specialized in gravure for packaging and publication with headquarters in Casale Monferrato near Turin. With approx. 100 employees Flexotecnica builds and merchandises central-cylinder flexo presses for printing on various flexible packaging materials. So far the Italian company is mainly present in Europe and in some overseas markets. The manufacturing of parts has been completely outsourced. KBA views this planned takeover as an opportunity to expand its strong market position in the folding carton market into a further growing packaging segment by using its own international organisation. The price for the majority stake in the Italian company will be in the high single-digit million euros, following adjustments on the basis of agreed items made on the settlement date. The Jet Press 540W also utilises the company’s own screening technology, which is based on FM screening and allows for smooth colour tones and sharp text as well as eliminating moire and rosette patterns. The press will be available as a standalone system, or as a complete solution with the integration of Fujifilm’s own post press equipment (consisting of a sheet cutter and sheet cut + roll). It can also integrate with post press equipment from Hunkeler - predominantly for newspaper use - and Muller Martini equipment for commercial print. This means that it will slot seamlessly into a production environment, producing finished printed products within days of initial installation. The Jet Press 540W uses Fujifilm’s high performance VIVIDIA ink, developed specifically to facilitate superb image quality. The VIVIDIA ink allows high density images to be printed at high speed, with less ink transfer from sheet to sheet, with high quality reproduction possible even on thin paper.

Fujifilm has used its experience and knowledge to develop both pigment and dye-based inks for use with this press which, when combined with the ultra-compact footprint, maximise the application flexibility and versatility of the machine. The VIVIDIA WP-S pigment ink features a wider colour gamut, suffers from less ‘see through’ on the page and can be used in nearly all graphic applications. The VIVIDIA WD-S dye ink also has a wide colour gamut, but provides better water resistance when used with inkjet papers. The combination of short-run and variable data capabilities allows the Jet Press 540W to accommodate a wide variety of jobs and opens up new opportunities for a growing number of applications requiring these particular features. It can also help to reduce paper waste when compared with commercial web presses, which makes the press a more sustainable solution. “We are excited to be launching our digital inkjet web press to the market,” comments Taro Aoki, manager of product development and marketing, Graphic System Division, FUJIFILM Europe GmbH. “We had a lot of interest in the technology showcase at drupa and have high expectations for European beta sites in the near future.” Kodak Showcases Innovative Digital Print Solutions at Gulf Print & Pack 2013 Kodak will showcase a raft of innovative print solutions at Gulf Print & Pack 2013 on Stand B1, Hall 4 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, April 8 – 11. News win the battle for consumers’ attention – particularly for book covers and direct mail applications. The NEXPRESS Press will also be showing the impact of its Long Sheet option for increased job flexibility and throughput. Komal Sharma, Managing Director Kodak, Middle East & Africa, believes the new inks will have a big impact: “The metallic Gold sparkle effect adds something different and breathes new life into applications like direct mail, certificates, photo and tickets. You can also create variations of gold-toned tints, by putting combinations of process colours underneath the gold effect. Just check the ME Printer and Printweek ME March covers to experience the Gold effect or come and view a wide range of marketing communication leaflets and invitation samples at our booth.” The Intelligent Calibration Solution (ICS) version 3 software, a unique element in the KODAK NEXPRESS Platform's Print Genius suite of productivity and quality control tools, ensures print uniformity and fast processing and enables a 20 percent faster processing time helping printers maintain peak quality throughout the production run. Extensive portfolio showcased Kodak will highlight the creative possibilities of the KODAK PROSPER S-Series Imprinting System, which uses KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology. The PROSPER Imprinting System allows users to create a hybrid set-up and produce personalised, highly targeted products. With faster job turnaround time, lower costs and higher productivity for imprinting applications when compared to roll-fed laser printing, the system is easy to integrate with existing equipment and production processes. Hybrid printing enables imprinting on the sheets inline as they pass through the offset press, eliminating drying time and

saving up to two days in production time. Showcased will be the drupa-launched KODAK SONORA XP Process Free Plate. Offering high-quality thermal imaging and the complete elimination of plate processing, SONORA XP Plates increase productivity, simplify operations, and remove costs by reducing the number of steps required for platemaking. SONORA XP Plates completely eliminate all costs associated with processing equipment and chemistry, while requiring less floor space and reducing energy consumption— all great for reducing the environmental footprint of printing, but even better for its bottom line. What makes SONORA XP Plates unique is that they offer all the benefits of process free, plus the productivity and print capabilities that printers expect from mainstream plates. Kodak will be happy to discuss how the KODAK ACHIEVE All-In-One CTP System offers affordable access to its state-of-the-art imaging and plate technologies, ideal for customers transitioning to digital imaging for the first time or upgrading to a higher level of performance in that region. Sharma states: “Including platesetting, plates, workflow software, processing, and chemistry, the complete CTP System delivers all the benefits of Kodak's Thermal Imaging Technology such as exceptional image quality, true stability on press and operational efficiencies accessible now to all printers. With lowchemistry usage and reduced waste, potential cost savings and an improved

environmental footprint can also be enjoyed by printers.” There will be samples on display of the KODAK FLEXCEL NX Wide System, which handles KODAK FLEXCEL NX Plates up to 1067 x 1524mm (42 x 60in). In addition to delivering quality equal to offset and rotogravure printing, KODAK FLEXCEL NX Plates significantly improve press-room efficiency, due to their wide color gamut, efficient ink transfer, and better print stability than traditional digital flexographic plates. Workflow manages the efficient production and delivery of pages to the press. On the booth there will be two workflow stations, running live demos of the KODAK INSITE Prepress Portal System and KODAK PRINERGY 6 Workflow System. The award-winning PRINERGY Workflow is widely used among commercial print and packaging companies seeking increased prepress capabilities, customizable automation, third-party integration, and advanced color and screening proficiencies. The newest version of PRINERGY Workflow 6 goes even further by providing unified job management driven by production planning and job intent, resulting in reduced costs in the manufacturing process. The INSITE Prepress Portal System automates some of the most critical workflow steps by providing secure web access to customers, prepress operators and service reps for remote job submission, progress tracking, collaboration, remote proofing and approvals. Sharma concludes: “Meeting with customers and prospects at the show is an opportunity to understand the specific challenges they are facing, and allows us to determine which KODAK Solutions are best suited to their needs. We also explore new ways they can increase revenue and drive profitability. By working in collaboration with print houses this way, we partner with our customers to help them grow their business.”

Synergy in high-quality waterbased inks Ink experts hubergroup and pigment specialists Heubach have joined forces in a strategic partnership for water-based inks. The collaboration brings together the wealth of experience of both partners. As part of the collaboration, Heubach, which has been manufacturing pigments for over 200 years, is producing waterbased pigment preparations developed jointly with hubergroup offering excellent color strength and gloss and outstanding shock stability. hubergroup, with its extensive know-how in ink development, combines these basic concentrates with other specially designed components to form a new water-based flexo printing ink system that perfectly meets the modern requirements of the packaging industry for an extremely wide range of applications. The result is the new HYDRO-X GA/ MGA product range, a modular user system for the production of packaging inks offering maximum quality and economy. hubergroup is offering the new HYDRO-X system in two versions: GA for GMP-compliant production and the premium variant MGA for maximum reliability in terms of migration, for packaging that comes into indirect contact with food - with all the associated market benefits. It represents the ideal starting point for a wide range of ink formulations using just a few system components. inviting designers from all over the world Iggesund Paperboard, manufacturer of the world-leading paperboard Invercote, is inviting designers from all over the world to participate in a unique learning experience. From those who apply, 20 will be chosen to join the Iggesund Design Experience in Sweden in late August 2013. “We tried this for the first time in 2012 and the appreciation and enthusiasm we got from the participating designers was overwhelming. So we’ll do it again”, says Staffan Sjöberg, Public Relations Manager at Iggesund Paperboard.

Participants will visit the Swedish forests to discover more about how they function and are managed. They will see how paperboard is made and understand why there is a difference between paperboard and Paperboard. And they will find out how they can use paperboard to raise their creativity to new heights while also making the right choices from a sustainability standpoint. The Iggesund Design Experience will discuss sustainable design and material selection and will question experts in such fields as forest management, water pollution/purification, and food safety in packaging. Participants will return home with new insights into how to make their designs stand out from the crowd not only graphically but also from a sustainability point of view. “We usually receive significantly more applications to our events than we can accommodate. In order to ensure a wide range of participants, we must therefore create a shortlist based on such factors as design speciality and geographic location,” explains Staffan Sjöberg. Iggesund Paperboard will be the host for four days filled with experiences of nature, insights into product knowledge and lively discussions about sustainability together with fellow designers from around the world. The event itself will be completely free of charge but participants will need to pay their own travel expenses to and from Stockholm, Sweden. “The designers will invest their time – and in return we will give them some unforgettable days in the heart of Sweden,” Sjöberg says. This new activity was inspired by the huge response Iggesund received from the design world for its Black Box Project, which gave well-known designers free rein to create unique solutions using Invercote as a starting material. More information and a registration form for the Iggesund Design Experience are available at www.iggesund.com
