Decisive impulses for the global print industry & top marks for drupa 2016 The atmosphere at drupa 2016, the world’s biggest and most important trade fair for print and crossmedia solutions, can hardly be topped: the investment climate is extremely good and has far exceeded all expectations. As the 11-day trade fair draws to a close the 1,837 exhibitors from 54 countries unanimously reported excellent business deals, extremely promising contacts and a positive spirit for the global print industry. The re-positioning of drupa and its focus on future themes with strong growth potential – such as 3D printing, functional printing or packaging printing – proves to be a real asset. Be it publication, commercial, packaging or industrial printing – printing technology offers matching solutions for all of these applications while opening up new lines of business and business models at the same time. “The print industry is constantly reinventing itself and offers a wealth

of high-potential facets. And this is precisely what drupa 2016 has very impressively proven. We were able to experience a highly innovative industry here in the 19 exhibition halls, one that has succeeded in moving out of the “valley of tears” and grasping the future by the neck,” explains Claus Bolza-Schünemann, Chairman of the drupa Committee and Chairman of the Board at Koenig & Bauer AG. drupa 2016: trade fair of decision makers and capital spenders Some 260,000 visitors from 188 countries and some 1,900 journalists from 74 countries travelled to Düsseldorf to learn about technology innovations, further developments and

new business lines. Visitors’ decisionmaking competence is extremely high: approximately 75% of all visitors are executives and in a decisive and or co-decisive capacity when it comes to capital expenditure in their companies. Various other indicators produced by the visitors’ survey also underscore very clearly that drupa is a flawless B2B trade fair and platform for business decisions: 54% of visitors came to drupa 2016 with concrete investment intentions 29% placed orders during drupa 30% are planning to place their orders after drupa

Management/General 60% found new suppliers at drupa The development in visitor attendance (2012: 314,248) reflects the worldwide consolidation occurring in the industry. This is why visitors’ high decisionmaking competence produced a particularly positive effect, all the more as one in two visitors expected their companies’ business to develop very well over the next twelve months. “Customers – with very few exceptions – no longer come with large delegations or as part of a company outing to drupa. It is rather the top managers that travel to Düsseldorf today – and from 188 countries to this drupa,” explains Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. drupa 2016: global No. 1 trade fair Totalling 76%, the percentage of international visitors is up 16% from four years ago. This figure can be attributed to Asian visitors: 17% of international visitors came from this continent alone (2012: 13.6%). And here India accounted for the largest share with 5%, followed by China with 3%. The leading European countries were Italy, France, the Netherlands and the UK. “This means that drupa has enhanced its global market significance and its international rating even further. It is the unrivalled global No. 1 trade fair for the print and media industries,” says Werner Matthias Dornscheidt commenting on the results of drupa 2016.

Positive verdict for technical side events Meeting with high demand was the programme of accompanying expert events with its three pillars drupa cube, drupa innovation park, 3D fab + print, touchpoint packaging as well as Printed Electronics and Solutions. One in two drupa visitors were interested in the various special shows and lecture theatres. drupa cube, the event and congress location, was received particularly enthusiastically. Almost 3,500 drupa visitors flooded into the cube over the eleven trade fair days in order to find out about a plethora of topics. In particular high demand were the keynotes by Frans

Johansson (founder and CEO of The Medici Group), Silas Amos (founder of Silas Amos Ltd. Design Thought) and Shane Wall (Chief Technology Officer HP And Global Head of HP Labs). The Creative Day organised by Messe Düsseldorf in cooperation with W&V which addresses marketers and creative workers in particular, was even sold out. And the C-Level Sessions specifically targeting executives were also fully booked. Meeting with a very positive response was the drupa innovation park that focused on innovative business models in addition to technology innovations from renowned exhibitors. On display were ready-to-market applications for Augmented Reality in field service and in advertising but also successful examples for multi-channel campaigns. The crucial insights from the contentdriven dip 2016: print creates content and added value! drupacity: an experience for all And drupa does not stop at the gates of the exhibition centre. Instead, Düsseldorf presented itself with a versatile programme as an attractive trade fair destination for all things drupa: be it an exhibition or 3D event, discussion forums or a “rolling lab”: drupacity allowed thousands of interested visitors to experience the trade fair themes – live and handson right in the city centre – providing both drupa visitors and exhibitors with tangible added value and a concept that is truly “one of a kind” worldwide.

“Our concept of bringing the drupa themes to the city thereby making it possible for people to understand and experience technology has paid off 100%. Thanks to numerous citycentre activities Düsseldorf citizens and visitors were able relate to the trade fair themes. drupacity proved an experience for all,” reworked Boris Neisser, General Manager at the trade association Destination Düsseldorf, which organised the drupacity programme, who went on to say: “The many multipliers from all over the world felt welcome in Düsseldorf and will return to their home countries with these positive impressions. This is “city marketing live” representing a locational advantage not to be underestimated for our city.” As announced at the midpoint of drupa, the event will will stick to its four-year cycle meaning the next drupa will be held from 23 June to 3 July 2020. Exhibitors Testimonials: Asahi, Dr. Dieter Niederstadt, Technical Marketing Manager With drupa 2016 we see our efforts confirmed that visitors, prospects and customers changed their point of view inS10 the flexo Feederprinting area completely. In today’s surrounding, stunning graphical

quality is a given. Customers are more looking into productivity advancements of a product such as the improvement in overall equipment effectiveness, e.g. to reduced make ready waste and fewer press wash-ups. We were happy that we had the opportunity to explain the perfect solution of fixed colour palette printing in reference to extended color gamut (ECG) and drupa was a good podium for that. These OEE benefits create significant improvement at the print converter and has been a hot topic in our conversations at the booth. Bobst, Jean-Pascal Bobst, CEO The industries we serve today are searching for drastic productivity improvement through innovations, services and people relationship. Moreover the digitalization of the packaging supply chain is paving the way for the future. This year´s drupa has again been a great platform for us to demonstrate that we deliver the right solutions for our customers´ applications – be they folding carton, flexible material, labels or corrugated board. Canon, Jeppe Frandsen, Executive Vice President Canon Europe Canon came to drupa 2016 with the aim of demonstrating the range and depth of our capabilities in a way that reflected

the real business of our customers. We set out to give visitors fresh ideas about how they could expand their capabilities and to inspire them to unleash print in their own individual ways. We’ve surpassed that objective on multiple levels. The response of visitors to what we’ve shown and discussed with them has been hugely positive. The deciding factor for so many Canon customers here at drupa 2016 has been the inspiration they have taken from the live print applications we have shown – so much so, in fact that for us it has been the ‘applications drupa’. Our many applications, offering significant added value particularly in the areas of commercial print and publishing, have given them confidence in the immediate business potential of our end-to-end solutions and, through their investments with Canon, they’re looking to ensure the long-term future of their businesses. In turn, our commitment far beyond drupa is to give them the long-term support to achieve their goals. CHILI publish, Kevin Goeminne, CEO drupa 2016 gave us the opportunity to show that CHILI publish has evolved a lot since it first drupa participation in 2012. With not only the launch of a new product but also the numerous

partnerships, CHILI publish wants to emphasize that our company is growing and is becoming an important player in the industry. At the booth, we wanted to create a casual and cosy feeling where people were welcomed to learn more about CHILI publish and its products. Which has certainly paid off as the number of visitors on our booth exceeded our expectations! drupa gave us the opportunity to meet people we have only been in contact with via mail or phone and to strengthen existing contacts in real life. CHILI publish is looking forward to the next edition of drupa and will make sure to show many more innovations by then! EFI, Guy Gecht, CEO The USP of drupa is clearly the production plants in operation. This allows visitors to follow and assess the complete workflow. An asset no other trade fair in the world has to offer. Enfocus, Fabian Prudhomme, Vice President Again, drupa managed to attract visitors from all over the world, which gave us an extraordinary opportunity to touch base with our existing Enfocus community as much as with new customers. People who were not familiar yet with Enfocus had the chance to discover our solutions and the value these can bring to their respective companies. We showcased the endless possibilities of the Enfocus solutions during the 800 live demos we delivered on our booth. We are absolutely delighted with the feedback and votes of confidence we received from our visitors. Not only is this the result of our customer centric approach in everything we do, but I also believe that we succeeded in convincing our visitors that it is possible to not only touch the future but also automate it!

This drupa was the most successful edition for Enfocus yet and we are already looking forward to drupa 2020.

its sister company X-Rite Pantone and subsidiaries Enfocus and MediaBeacon. Spread out across six Inspiration Zones, visitors experienced the combined innovations to improve the steps of a typical packaging production workflow. Bringing that message and demonstrating the value add of a connected and integrated workflow has come across really well for the many visitors we welcomed at our stand. This drupa helps us to reconfirm our leadership position in all domains of packaging and labels workflows; the overwhelming amount of visitors from all over the globe exceeded our expectations both in closed orders as well as in new contacts.

Epson, Duncan Ferguson, Executive Director, Professional Printing & Robotics, Epson Europe This drupa is Epson’s biggest ever showcase for our most complete range of inkjet printers for prepress, signage, photographic, textile and label applications. We have had a very successful show with significant orders from companies around the globe, particularly for the SureColor SC-S signage range, which has led us to increase production to meet demand. Interest in our SurePress L-6034UV digital label press, commercialised at drupa, was high with orders taken at the show from Germany and the UK. Our Print Shop Zone too was extremely busy and attracted huge interest from visitors discovering how our desktop solutions enable them to offer a collaborative design-and-print service to produce personalized products.

Goss, Eric Bell, Marketing Director Achieving More Together’ was undoubtedly the right theme for Goss this drupa. We’ve had a very successful show, working side-by-side with our partners, and this will be continue to be the most logical way forward to support not only our existing customers, but new prospects too. Our drupa 2016 successes include significant product orders, signed for live on the stand; the sale of the first Goss Thallo system since acquiring of this product line from DG press ServiceS; and the launch of another Goss industry-first, the embedded color bar for web offset packaging production. All in all, drupa 2016 far exceeded our expectations and confirms that our approach to business, with our customers and partners at the forefront of our strategy, is the right direction for Goss moving forward.

of the trade fair. Thanks to drupa Heidelberg starts into the new business with a positive outlook. Our motto Simply Smart was a success with visitors. We received a high demand for our industrial printing ranges and exceeded our own targets. The further automation of offset printing produced a high number of contracts signed especially for our high-performance presses. Together with our partner Fuji we have set new standards in industrial digital printing. The debut and market launch of our new digital printing machine Primefire 106 was extremely promising prompting worldwide sales for packaging applications. With drupa tailwainds we are on course for growth. Highcon, Aviv Ratzman, CEO and CoFounder drupa 2016 has been a tipping point for our business. We launched our technology at drupa 2012, but this one has been a real reinforcement of our vision. Sales to both new customers and existing customers have surpassed our expectations by far. drupa has been confirmation that digital technology, and finishing in particular, has reached the point where it is becoming mainstream. Many of the customers we met during drupa have realized the need to start investing in technology rather than continue to expand capacity, adding value to their products instead of competing on price. HP, Francois Martin, worldwide marketing director HP Graphics Solutions Business drupa 2016 has been a landmark show for HP. It is clear that digital has arrived as mainstream, with HP experiencing the best attendance at any drupa ever and with sales not only surpassing 2012 results by 20%, but exceeding our 2016

ambitious goals by 25% overall. drupa continues to be the most relevant industry event for innovation, and HP is committed to keep reinventing to help our customers reinvent their own possibilities, ensuring that drupa 2020 is better than we could imagine. Ink Router, Robert Godwin, Director of Business Development Our first time exhibiting at drupa was a great success. It made it possible for us to introduce our dynamic new product, InkRouter to visitors from all over the world. One of the largest fairs in the world brought us in contact with leaders in the printing industry, which offered us the opportunity to network and to create more brand awareness and brand recognition. Sabine Geldermann, Global Director of drupa and the Messe Düsseldorf team did a great job, I’m glad we were part of this event. drupa 2016 has exceeded our expectations and we are already looking forward to the next edition! Kodak, Olivier Claude, Worldwide Director of Sales and Customer Operations drupa 2016 completely exceeded Kodak’s expectations. Tens of thousands of high caliber visitors, customers and prospects from around the world visited our stand to do business and see the more than 20 products and technologies Kodak

launched at this year’s show. The fact that we hit our sales target on Day 7 – and having reached 168% of our sales target on Day 9 - is testimony of the industry’s trust in our cutting edge technology, which helps our customers deliver on profitability, sustainability and growth. Landa, Benny Landa, Chairman drupa 2016 will be remembered as the inflection point in the industry’s transition from mechanical printing to digital. In the past, digital printing vendors had to try to convince the market that digital is the way to go. Previously it was a ‘push’ selling motion. Now, for the first time, the situation has reversed. There is a very strong ‘pull’ from the market, driven by both customers and brand-owners, who are now demanding digital printing. It seems that the market leaders – in packaging, commercial printing and in publishing – have come to the realization that they simply must go digital. For Landa Digital Printing, this market awakening has been particularly rewarding, as reflected in the substantial number of orders which we took at drupa. Customers are telling us that no one comes even close to matching our quality, speed, substrate independence and print cost, which combine to create a tremendous value proposition.

Management/General 11 Massivit 3D Printing Technology, Lilach Sapir, VP Marketing and Business Development This drupa is Massivit 3D first presentation at an international trade fair. It was a great chance for us to present our 3D printing solutions made for printers in an exhibition for Print Service Providers. Our expectations are more than fulfilled. We had some nice sales mostly to large/wide format printers who understand that the use of 3D printing is their future and enables them to add another dimension to their business and grow their services and business in the visual communication world. QuadTech, Karl Fritchen, President drupa 2016 has been a fantastic show

Ricoh, John Blyth, Market Development Manager & Production Printing Business Group For us drupa 2016 has been all about enabling Ricoh to open new worlds of opportunity to new and potential clients alike. We have been delighted by the strong and steady flow of visitors on to our stand. There is nowhere like drupa for bringing decision makers in our industry, from all corners of the globe, together. Most notable of all for us has been the relative seniority and influence of so many of those we have been proud to host on our stand. They seem to have appreciated the warm open welcome and the way Ricoh has set out a clear

and doubling with each coming day. With an incredibly fruitful launch at the show in 2012, we saw our company grow from 12 to over 200 customers and drupa played a vital part in that accomplishment. We hoped for similar success in 2016 and the show has exceeded all expectation. Scodix’ vision to ‘enhance your competitive edge’ and drupa’s message of ‘touch the future’ went hand-in-hand for us at the show and we saw these synergies demonstrated by phenomenal business results. VDMA, Dr. Markus Heering, Managing Director of the Printing and Paper Technology Association within the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) Not only our own VDMA stand got an enormous respones, our member companies also gave us the feedback that the quality of conversations they had and the numner of lead and new orders were extremely positive. Our manufacturers have made use of the lately difficult years to develop custom-fit solutions for the changed needs in the print industry. We have every reason to look to the future with optimism. Print is an industry with a future!

for QuadTech! We wanted to reach specific printing markets with the launch of four new products. There is no better place than drupa to connect with those markets, and take advantage of the bright spotlight. Not only was the quantity of show visitors very high for us, but also the quality. It seemed that almost all were customers or potential customers of our print technology. We experienced very high interest and extremely positive response to our ColorTrack, DeltaCam, Inspection System and MultiCam TRIM introductions. After investing heavily in new technology innovations, drupa gives us the opportunity to meet with our markets directly, and show them the fruits of our labor.

narrative that covers the full, integrated breadth of services and solutions that we offer. In production printing and beyond. From multi-drop inkjet to additive manufacturing, end to end workflow to neon toner and lean and green consultanc. Drupa 2016 has been eventful. But overwhelmingly in a positive way and we are already looking forward to drupa 2020. Scodix, Amit Shvartz, Vice President of Marketing Gaining over 100 new customers in 11 days, Scodix had an extremely successful drupa 2016. The largest exhibition in print provides a hugely popular forum and within this buzzing environment, we saw sales doubling

Xeikon, Danny Mertens, Corporate Communications Manager drupa 2016 was a special edition for us, as it was our first major show since we were acquired by Flint Group. The booth, including a number of Xeikon technologies and Flint Group presence, made this collaboration visible for our visitors. With the theme “X marks the spot”, we wanted to mark our position in the market. We are pleased to say that once again, drupa 2016 has been a successful edition for us. We aimed to create an open and welcome atmosphere at our booth and this was more than visible through the amount of visitors on our stand every day. It gave us the opportunity to get in contact with partners, competitors, existing customers that we have known for years and new, future customers from all over the world. drupa is a unique experience, not only by its size but most of all by its diversified public. Countdown for the next edition in 2020 has started!

Kodak showcased robust offering at drupa Print service providers saw the host of products being delivered through Kodak’s strong R&D investment in prepress solutions in the Kodak Quarter at drupa 2016. Kodak revealed two plates that are expected to set new levels of onpress performance for print service providers. The KODAK SONORA UV Process Free Plate is a new plate designed to allow printers using UV, including the newer low-energy UV presses, to achieve higher run lengths than with any other process free plate available today. The KODAK SWORD MAX Thermal Plate will feature the new, patented Advanced Resin Technology (ART), which delivers high-performance features for printers facing challenging press conditions and strict cost constraints. SONORA UV Plates will meet the rigorous demands of UV print

Digital Technology the globe already benefit from faster supply, support and customer service,” comments Brad Kruchten, President of Kodak’s Print Systems Division. “SONORA Plate volume sales grew 50% in 2015, and this continued adoption of SONORA Plates worldwide underscores the industry’s demand for more sustainable printing solutions to address new applications and opportunities, all while increasing profitability. With both economic and environmental sustainability at the forefront of more and more printers’ strategic investments, we predict this trend to continue and anticipate that 30% of Kodak’s plate volume will be process free by 2019 as process free plates are quickly becoming a mainstream industry product.” The Advanced Resin Technology in SWORD MAX Thermal Plates is designed to deliver high-performance features, including strong chemical resistance, excellent handling, high productivity and resolution, and low developer consumption. SWORD MAX Plates will be available for testing in late 2016, initially in Asia only.

applications increasingly used by today’s packaging and commercial printers. The SONORA UV Plate will enable printers to take advantage of both the environmental and economic benefits of process free plates and the expanded set of opportunities associated with UV technology, including flexibility and durability, high print quality, and faster drying times. Based on technology used in the popular SONORA XJ Process Free Plate available commercially in Japan, the SONORA UV Plate is in early field testing now and will be in controlled sales and beta testing by Q4 2016. Full availability is expected in early 2017. “With SONORA Plate production facilities now located in the USA, Europe and China, more than 3,000 SONORA Plate customers across

The company’s most recent plate introductions, KODAK ELECTRA MAX Thermal Plates and KODAK LIBRA VP Digital Plates will be on display in the Plate Gallery. Kodak will also have live imaging demonstrations of SONORA XP and SONORA UV Process Free Plates and ELECTRA MAX Plates. Visitors to the stand can see the new KODAK AQUA-IMAGE Pressroom Chemicals range, designed to reduce printers’ variability and improve performance in the pressroom. The AQUA-IMAGE product range, currently available in the U.S. and Canada, and expanding worldwide throughout 2016, includes over 20 press washes, plate cleaners, ink roller maintenance chemicals and storage gums. Enhanced CtP Automation Portfolio delivers better efficiency and speed At drupa, Kodak also introduced an ultra-high speed imaging technology – the new ‘W speed’ – to the TRENDSETTER Q400 and Q800 Platesetters. The new imaging technology significantly increases

throughput to 68 plates per hour on an 8-up plate and 75 plates per hour on a 4-up plate imaging KODAK SONORA XP plates, creating the world’s fastest process-free CTP. This configuration will deliver a more efficient, compact and faster plate-making process – all without chemistry or processor use. Kodak has also responded to a growing demand for higher resolution imaging, mostly triggered by security, lenticular and high resolution art printing applications, by introducing a new 4,800 / 5,080 dpi resolution option to its Trendsetter platesetter ranges. This option can be used to image small features with great details like background patterns or wavy lines of variable width, and for micro printing indiscernible to the naked eye. A host of new automation options to complement the KODAK TRENDSETTER and KODAK ACHIEVE CTP families is also shown for the first time at drupa. This includes the new Multi-Cassette Unit (MCU) that features online access to four cassettes of 120 plates each, a total of 480 plates can be imaged without manual intervention. Brad Kruchten adds: “The MultiCassette Unit Kodak’s third generation CTP automation – requires half the space and uses up to 80% less energy than any other MCU on the market today. It is the perfect addition to Kodak’s recently introduced Single Cassette Unit and In-Line Punch System to give PSPs the flexibility and choice that will suit their printing needs.”

Apogee Cloud users minimize IT investements and maximize flexibility Although workflow management in the cloud is a relatively new phenomenon, Agfa Graphics customers can attest to its many advantages in terms of cost savings and increasing flexibility of their operations. Cloud-based solutions are perfectly adaptable to changing needs and the workflow software is always up to date. This was shown at the recent drupa expo in Germany

“I had never before considered the investment costs for the management, maintenance, and regular upgrades of the current server a waste. However, we can now expand the functionality without buying a specialized server. In addition, the excessive investment in information security is no longer necessary, and the customer data are always safe. This is incredibly important in terms of business continuity. Thanks to the proposal from AgfaGevaert Japan, we can work with cloud technology already and we value this a lot. Adopting this technological innovation has offered us new perspectives, and we have been able to reform and improve our operations, and to decrease waste.” Apogee Cloud incorporates the existing Apogee 10 workflow modules, yet relies on the cloud infrastructure, know-how and security offered by Agfa Graphics. This means users run their workflow off-site, in the same private and secure cloud that Agfa also uses for its Arkitex workflow software for newspapers, as well as for its HealthCare business unit. Franco Roda, General Director and owner of Fratelli Roda SA, Switzerland, and Luisa Colombo Crivelli, in charge of Marketing, explain their reasons to invest in a cloud-based Apogee workflow system: “The advantages add up as we don’t need to purchase dedicated hardware,

which leads to less energy consumption and more space. We also avoid the costs for hardware and software management and service because we rely on the data security in Agfa’s data centers. But most importantly the workflow is up-to-date at all times.” The runtime license is aligned with customers’ production and includes hardware, software, support, and ICT-managed services. Apogee Cloud minimizes investments, yet maximizes flexibility. This cloud-based solution is perfectly adaptable to changing needs. Seiichi Nishikawa, president of the Nishikawa Group, Japan, said:

Hosted by Agfa “Apogee Cloud easily adapts to changing needs in terms of production capacity,” says Andy Grant, Head of Software, Agfa Graphics. “The Agfa experts relieve in-house IT personnel of day-to-day tasks, so they have more time to focus on strategy and innovation within the organization. They also ensure system stability by constantly and proactively monitoring processes, aiming at foreseeing and preventing system failures or downtime.” Agfa’s hosting service is located in Belgium, monitored 24/7 and accessible by authorized personnel only. The infrastructure also guarantees protection against damage and is ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certified.

Showcase trailblazer at Drupa 2016 At drupa 2016 as part of its focus on demonstrating productive, high quality technologies that will enable print service providers (PSPs) to unleash their business potential, Canon offered many PSPs their first opportunity to see the ground-breaking Océ VarioPrint i300 in action following its 2015 launch. Combining the key benefits of its highly successful ColorStream and VarioPrint 6000 technologies, Canon developed this high-speed, sheet-fed inkjet press to deliver in one device the productivity and quality of inkjet and the versatility and flexibility of high-end, toner-based sheet-fed printers. At drupa 2016, Canon introduced a range of enhancements and extensions to the press, designed to further broaden its applications capability. New ColorGrip option for Océ VarioPrint i300 Canon used drupa 2016 to showcase the VarioPrint i300’s new ‘ColorGrip’ option, which has been designed to extend the application spectrum of the press and the profitable business

opportunities for high-quality print across a wide range of printing applications – from transactional to promotional communication. ColorGrip is an inline paper conditioning step that expands the choice of media, enabling high quality inkjet print on commodity stock, from

light to heavy weight, which would otherwise deliver unacceptable print quality. The introduction of ColorGrip allows print service providers (PSPs) to print on a wider variety of costeffective papers, including standard uncoated and offset coated media, and to comfortably manage blended offset, toner and inkjet production without

the need for different types of paper and without compromising on quality. Broadening the applications scope of the press, ColorGrip technology enables PSPs to increase print volumes and the range of jobs delivered on a single press platform. From May 2016, Canon will offer the VarioPrint i300 with and without ColorGrip, giving customers a choice of solutions optimised for their requirements. All existing VarioPrint i300 customers can upgrade their systems with the ColorGrip feature, protecting their existing investment. New ink set for VarioPrint i300 Canon also introduced a new enhanced ink set for the VarioPrint i300 to deliver outstanding colour gamut on a wide range of media. This is the result of Canon’s commitment to progressive innovation in ink for its inkjet systems and is also designed to optimise the colour reproduction achievable with the ColorGrip technology. The new generation inks will be introduced across the existing VarioPrint i300 customer base, enabling all customers to benefit from the enhanced performance. New finishing options The applications scope of the device is also being extended through the close integration of the inkjet engine with two new finishing options, supporting high-performance booklet-making and perforating.

The BLM600 is a complete bookletmaking system for digital print applications, combining stitching, folding, spine forming and trimming in a single machine to produce squareback booklets up to 224 pages thick. It features fully automatic settings for different booklet sizes and paginations, including variable stitch-leg length for varying booklet thicknesses. Printers whose job profile calls for flexible perforating capabilities will benefit from the integration of the VarioPrint i300 with the Tecnau TC1530 Dynamic Cut Sheet Perforator. This device dynamically creates horizontal and vertical micro perforations, allowing the perforation pattern to be turned on and off on a page-by-page basis, and offers a broad range of perforation patterns and wide application flexibility in transactional, direct mail and graphic arts applications. These two finishing options make it even easier to integrate the VarioPrint i300 into environments with ColorStream, JetStream, VarioPrint and imagePRESS systems, and to move jobs seamlessly between the various devices. Peter Wolff, Director, Canon Commercial Print Group comments: “Continuous product development is central to our philosophy towards the Océ VarioPrint i300, which in its first year has already proved its productivity and reliability in customer

environments and achieved the leading position in the sheet-fed inkjet market. We brought the press to market in early 2015, knowing it to be a groundbreaking approach to sheet-fed inkjet that would enable customers to mix multiple media streams for the ultimate in fast, flexible digital print production. With PRISMA workflow and finishing integrated into the system, the VarioPrint i300 is a unique end-to-end solution that allows the printing of customised and personalised jobs on multiple stocks with full job recovery. Customers can integrate multiple stocks and finishing into a job, allowing them to expand their business into new applications and new markets.” Wolff continues: “It was always our intention to build on this strong foundation with backwards-compatible product enhancements and finishing options that would make the VarioPrint i300 a compelling solution for all types of print production environment, to replace or complement offset, digital toner or continuous inkjet solutions. As customers across Europe have already been reaping the benefits of this innovative technology, the positive feedback and requests for additional functionality have fuelled our ongoing development of the product, resulting in the significant enhancements and additions we are delivering at this drupa 2016.”

drupa 2016 reports strong Asian presence Asia accounts for 17% of total visitorship, up 3.4% from 2012. Sha Jumari reports. drupa had 314,248 visitors. While overall visitor number has dropped, decision-makers is said to be extremely high at 75%. According to drupa, these decision-makers are executives and in a decisive and or co-decisive capacity when it comes to capital expenditure in their companies. “Customers – with very few exceptions – no longer come with large delegations or as part of a company outing to drupa. It is rather the top managers that travel to Düsseldorf today, and from 188 countries, to this drupa,” explained Dornscheidt. Other indicators to highlight the success of drupa include: The percentage of international visitors at drupa is at 76%, up 16% from the 2012 edition. Asian delegates made up 17% of the percentage. This is an increase from a reported 13.6% at the previous drupa. India took the largest share of the percentage at 5%, as China followed close behind at 3%. The leading European countries were Italy, France, the Netherlands and the UK. “This means that drupa has enhanced its global market significance and its international rating even further. It is the unrivalled global No. 1 trade fair for the print and media industries,” said Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, president & CEO, Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. India was also represented the largest Asian visitor group in 2012, at a recorded 15,000. Additionally, India exhibitors reported strongest exhibitor numbers to date, taking up 48 stands at drupa. India exhibitors include machine

manufacturers such as Manugraph and TPH, packaging giants including Uflex, die-makers such as Diehard Dies, consumable companies Mahalaxmi, RubTech, Imagico and paper mills such as Deevya Shakti Paper Mills. Drupa reported approximately 260,000 visitors from 188 countries and some 1,900 journalists from 74 countries were in attendance. This presents a drop in visitors; in 2012,

• 54% of visitors came to drupa 2016 with concrete investment intentions • 29% placed orders during drupa • 30% are planning to place their orders after drupa • 60% found new suppliers at drupa The drupa visitor survey also revealed a rosy outlook on the print industry: one in two visitors expected their companies’ business to develop very well over the next twelve months.

Landa Opens drupa with a not-so-Nano bang The official opening day of drupa saw Landa making a series of announcements on strategic cooperation, beta sites and new products.

True to founder, Benny Landa fashion, the print media was treated to a visually engaging presentation on Nanography technology, and its significance to the digital print industry. Landa also fittingly celebrated his 70th birthday at the biggest tradeshow in the world of print. The presentation baton was later passed on to Landa's newly-appointed CEO, Yishai Amir.

Graphics will be able to offer shortrun magazine and journal printing clients more versatile products.

1. Strategic Partnerships Quad/Graphics will strategically collaborate with Landa on bringing Landa Nanographic Printing Presses to the magazine-quality publication market, focusing on cost-effective digital printing for short-run magazines and journals.

2. Beta Sites of Nanographic Presses Announced

Quad/Graphics’ Nanographic Printing presses will combine commercial lithographic speeds and quality – even on the lightest-weight coated and uncoated papers. Accordingly, Quad/

In addition, Cimpress will be purchasing up to 20 Nanographic presses upon completion of successful testing, to potentially be the commercial printing industry’s largest ever digital printing transaction.

The first beta site is colordruck Baiersbronn, a folding carton specialist in Germany. The company will be Landa’s first customer in Europe for the Landa S10 Nanographic Printing Press. The Landa S10 press will be central to colordruck’s new purposebuilt, highly-automated 3,000 square meter digital packaging facility. The facility will serve a range of customer packaging requirements, from mass customisation packaging, individual and small orders, to mock-ups and test market campaigns. Another Landa S10 press beta site is confirmed at Imagine!, a POP and instore signage provider in the US. The press will be installed at the facility in Minneapolis and will be predominantly used for POP/POS display work. Elanders, a global print and packaging supplier in Sweden, will be the first Yishai Amir & Benny Landa

beta customer for the Landa S10P Nanographic Printing Press with perfector. The press will be installed at Elanders’ facility in Germany for the production of short- to mediumrun two-sided general commercial printing, including advertising pieces, catalog production, direct mail and high-end magazines. 3. New Nanography Press Launched: Landa W10P Landa W10P Nanographic Printing Press is a new meter-wide (41 in.) perfecting press with two printing engines. Designed for the publishing, catalog and direct mail segments, it prints at 200 meters per minute on a variety of coated and uncoated papers, light boards and metallic substrates. According to Landa, the Landa W10P is the industry’s highest speed digital press for high quality publishing market. The Landa W10P press supposedly prints on any coated or uncoated paper stock, ranging in weight from 30 gsm to cardstock. Since Nanographic Printing creates zero strikethrough, the press is able to produce magazinequality printing even on the lightest and cheapest uncoated papers. Running at 200 meters/minute, it can print over two million magazine pages per 8-hour shift. The Landa W10P joins the Nanography portfolio which initially consists of the Landa S10, Landa S10P, Landa W10, and the Nano-Metallography technology. The Landa W10P press will start shipping to customers in late 2017 and will not be shown at Drupa 2016.

Heidelberg Launches Primefire 106 The platform enables high digital production volumes to present new business opportunities for packaging printers Stephen Plenz at Primefire 106 launch presentation

The Primefire 106 enables packaging printers in particular to take the first step in developing new areas of business, for example with the production of variable or personalised packaging.

A day before the official start of drupa, on 30 May 2016, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) unveiled the new Primefire 106 to a roomful of print media. The Primefire 106 is geared towards packaging printers, and features industrial inkjet printing in 70 x 100 format.

The newly designed system is based on the leading inkjet technology from a development collaboration with Fujifilm and the Heidelberg Peak Performance platform from Heidelberg’s offset technology.

The digital printing system offers a number of highlights, including the highest quality of 1,200 x 1,200 dpi at a printing speed of up to 2,500 sheets per hour, achieving production volumes of up to 1.5 million sheets per month in future productivity modes. Heidelberg added that the Primefire 106 can potentially produce 5,000 sheets per hour for productivity modes,

Management/General which will be officially introduced after beta testings. The 7-color inkjet system with Heidelberg Multicolor technology also covers up to 95 per cent of the Pantone colour space. At the same time, water-based inkjet printing meets strict environmental and recycling requirements and therefore also permits food-safe production. Other products in the Heidelberg digital ‘Fire’ line include Labelfire, Omnifire and Versafire. At drupa, Heidelberg celebrated its 1,000th Versafire worldwide sale to a customer in Germany. With the ‘Fire’ line, the company hopes for the digital business to account for over 10% of total sales at Heidelberg. Prinect Digital Center Inline with Perfect Stack technology An important feature of the Primefire 106 is that it has been outfitted with a completely new operating concept, the Prinect Digital Center Inline with Perfect Stack technology. In combination with the Prinect Digital Frontend (DFE) from Heidelberg, the new high-performance control station supposedly ensures seamless integration into a print shop’s existing overall workflow. In combination with the Perfect Stack technology and controlled by the Prinect Digital Center Inline, the Speedmaster XL-based feeder only allows good sheets into the delivery

pile. The operator can also output test sheets directly to the control panel at the push of a button in order to visually check their quality. “The Heidelberg Primefire 106 combines the best of both worlds and is the first commercially available, industrial digital printing system in 70 x 100 format. This opens up completely new market segments both for our customers and Heidelberg. Folding carton producers in particular develop new digitally driven business models and thus improve their competitiveness. Heidelberg now offers a first-rate solution to do exactly that”, said Stephan Plenz, member of the management board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment. The Primefire 106 aims to address specific topics of relevance to the industry, such as web-to-print, multichannel publishing, personalised short runs, and digital packaging and label printing.

Speedmaster XL 106 to demo Heidelbergs Autonomous Printing

Heidelberg Assistant Autonomous Printing is the Way of the Future At drupa, Heidelberg emphasised on its focus on digitization to open doors for autonomous printing with the the company’s new ‘push to stop’ operating philosophy. According to Heidelberg, processes that have so far been actively planned, started, and completed by operators, will be taken over by the press in the future. The operator will only interrupt the autonomous process chain if necessary. Heidelberg demonstrated this idea at drupa with the new-generation Speedmaster XL 106, which takes industrial print production to a whole new level of performance. New cloud-based service platform The new Heidelberg cloud records and analyses data from over 10,000 networked machines. With these data, Heidelberg will be able to offer its customers preventive service programs to improve machine availability and boost the productivity of the entire pressroom. The Heidelberg Assistant concept study provides an insight into the future cloud-based information and service portal for Heidelberg customers. The Heidelberg Assistant gives customers personal access to all information and services relating to their businesses. This portal also offers direct access to the new Heidelberg eShop, providing customers with eCommerce solutions. Heidelberg has now rolled out its new online shop in 27 countries. Registered and new customers can order consumables around the clock and get their items delivered in super-fast time. It will also be possible to order selected service parts in the future.

EFI unveils Nozomi platform The new press is an ultra-fast inkjet press targeted at corrugated packaging EFI launched the new EFI Nozomi C18000, a single-pass LED inkjet press for high-speed corrugated board production. The Nozomi is purportedly able to reach speeds up to 75 linear meters per minute. In addition to its speeds, the new technology is able to give users the benefit of a low acquisition price with significant total cost of ownership advantages. The 1.8m-wide EFI Nozomi C18000 inkjet press aims to help corrugated manufacturers and brands access a wide colour gamut and broader design options in corrugated board work with fast turnaround times, all while maintaining low production costs. The sheetfed, digital packaging press has run speeds up to 8,100 m2/

hour and can print on boards up to 1.8mx3m in size. Users will gain superior versatility thanks to a doublelane printing feature that enables full utilisation of the press’ speed and width and increases throughput up to 9,000 80cmx60cm boards per hour. The press’ LED imaging capabilities is said to provide brilliant, accurate colour imaging on just about any board substrate, including traditional Kemi, model, bleach and kraft materials. The press is designed to offer value by reframing the industry discussion of digital corrugated packaging by enabling cost-effective, high-quality, direct-to-board digital printing, and by eliminating expenses and a great number of steps associated with

plating, printing and lamination in traditional analog production. “EFI’s next generation of innovation brings to market the strongest combination of versatility, imaging quality and production speeds at a total cost of ownership that is far below similar single-pass platforms,” said Guy Gecht, CEO, EFI. “When commercially available next year, the Nozomi C18000 press will finally give the corrugated packaging market a unique solution to establish a profitable business around on-demand, customised digital printing.” While other inkjet technologies are often developed to address signage or document printing and then adapted to corrugated packaging

Wide Format / Proofing Technology uses, this new EFI LED inkjet press has been designed from the ground up specifically for a $130 billion corrugated packaging industry that has more than 200 billion square meters of printed output per year – a figure that is more than 25-times greater than the estimated amount of annual signage and graphics output produced. The new inkjet technology’s media handling, inks and software platforms were designed by the top engineering, software and ink teams from across EFI. The cross-functional teams focused on understanding the unique needs of the corrugated industry, leveraging the latest technology to design a revolutionary solution. Users will be able to increase their productivity with digital in nearly any board application, running everything from 14-point cardstock to a full range of corrugated flutes – A, B, C, D, E, F, G, N, O, AB, AC, BC, EB, EF, and triple wall – without slowing down the press. The corrugated board press prints in up to seven colours, including white, and provides high-quality output with resolutions up to 360x720 dots per inch with four-level grayscale imaging. An in-line primer will give customers control over dot gain and ink absorption on different types of corrugated top sheets. A 100% in-line image quality inspection system on the press is tied to robust print optimisation technologies, including inkjet nozzle, alignment and uniformity correction for the highest possible imaging quality.

In addition to the new corrugated packaging press, EFI will incorporate its core Nozomi inkjet technology platform into new, high-volume printers for the signage market and other industries. EFI is planning to start installations of Nozomi C18000 presses within the next 12 months. The Green Factor With its “cool cure” LED imaging capabilities, the Nozomi C18000 press will help redefine sustainability in corrugated board production, as it will allow customers to eliminate wasteful warehousing routines for analogprinted packaging with leaner, just-intime inventory. Plus, packaging produced with the press is fully recyclable, with printed output meeting a leading recyclability and repulpability certification standard. Printed output for the EFI Nozomi C18000 press received certification for OCC recyclability and repulpability from the Western Michigan University Recycling, Paper and Coating Pilot Plant. Customers and brands can include the certification’s recyclability logo on corrugated board packaging, displays and other products printed using the press. As icing on the cake, the Nozomi press’ permanent head architecture eliminates the downtime associated with replacing consumable printheads.

New Fiery XB DFE Platform The Nozomi will be powered by a new, scalable EFI Fiery XB bladedarchitecture, high-performance digital front end (DFE) for the press will provide fast, efficient job processing to eliminate downtime spent waiting for jobs. Plus, the new DFE will include industry-proven Fiery job management, imposition and automation tools for peak efficiency. Introduced alongside the Nozomi at drupa, the new DFE platform is designed for ultra high-speed inkjet presses in the corrugated, packaging, transaction, commercial, graphics, book printing and photo markets. The DFE is said to be able to drive the presses to unparalleled speeds – 100 meters per minute of 1.8M wide corrugated boards; or in excess of 13,000 B1 sheets per hour, the equivalent of roughly 173 cut-sheet toner engines printing simultaneously at 100 pages per minute. The Fiery XB platform will power the next generation of ultra highspeed inkjet presses including Landa Nanography presses, Xerox Trivor, Canon Voyager and EFI Nozomi. The new Fiery DFE for the Nozomi C18000 press also will completely integrate with MES and ERP technologies in EFI’s Packaging and Corrugated Packaging Suites, as well as with Esko workflows, for streamlined management, including dynamic scheduling, shop-floor data collection and more.
