Welcome 10th Asian Print Awards 2012 - The only regional awards of its kind in Asia The annual Asian Print Awards was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the print and packaging industries across Asia. With more than half the world’s population represented in this fast growing area, communication in the form of printed matter links Asia’s diverse cultures. It is imperative that such print achievements do not go unrecognised, especially among the population base that Asia enjoys. The Awards are judged on a wholly quality-oriented set of criteria to ensure that fair play is enacted at all times. The Independent Judging Panel comprises highly qualified personnel from within Asia and around the world. The independent judging panel has no knowledge of the actual entrants details. ALL ENTRIES ARE NUMBER-CODED. Entries must be commercially produced work. The Asian Print Awards is the only regional print quality competition of its kind in Asia. Supported by leading industry-supply companies, any progressive quality print house should enter and prove that they are the best - by winning the Gold, Silver or Bronze award. Proving pride in quality awareness is what customers love to see. It’s not just empty words, you can prove it. Entries submission close on 1st October 2012 at 5pm.

Management/General

The sky is the limit The vendor of Fiery, dominating with 97% market share in the production printing market in China alone, is not about to let the status quo remain. Ramin Kazemi (RK), Vice-President for EFI Asia Pacific, talks to Christel Lee of Print Pack Publish Asia on the third day of the fortnight-long exhibition. PPPA: Congratulations on your success in Shanghai Show - new records for units sold? What is your target? RK: We would like to sell as many units

as we can! The sky is the limit. On a real note, my target will be to connect with the customers and share what we have to offer. I want customers to know how serious we are in leading this superwide format industry. I hope customers see the level of our commitment, understand what a strong partner we are, and choose us.

earlier, back our promise with excellent support. At EFI, we are proud of all products in our portfolio, but if I need to pick one to put out there like you say, I would choose VUTEk. This is a stellar product line and we have such a strong customer base. VUTEk is certainly one of our flagship products.

PPPA: What would be your realistic expectations for Asia? Which unit would you expect to put out there?

PPPA: Any specific countries of growth?

RK: Asia is a growing market and we are experiencing tremendous progress in Australia, China, and Indonesia. We want to capture as much of this Asia boom as possible, but we have to back it up with a solid backbone in the area service. We need to have the right infrastructure in place; good facilities and excellent post sale support. We need to ensure customers come first and build around this premise.

RK: The first countries that come to mind are China and India. We are putting the right measures in place for future growth. Though many are feeling the heat of China’s finance slowdown, we have been fortunate to remain “safe” from this heat. I hope to see even more growth in Australia and Indonesia. However, I wish to get into emerging countries such as Vietnam and Myanmar.

My target is to be more sensitive to Asia; provide the most suitable products, communicate our story in the most effective way, and as mentioned

PPPA: Comparing yourself to the other players, what would be your biggest selling point?

RK: We’ve been in this business for 23 years. If it weren’t for our long history and our 33 platforms, we wouldn’t be here today. While most of us have spent half of our lives in this superwide format industry, we are still young when it comes to the enthusiasm we have for the business and our goals for the future. EFI invests over 20% of its revenue in R&D, with the main focus on the hardware sector. The average company only invests up to 2%. Our higher emphasis on R&D clearly reflects our vision and strategy. We still also consistently invest in our software portfolio. This is the more matured sector of our business, and we are happy to say we are still the leaders in this market. Overall, we believe that our R&D investment will be key in keeping us providing better solutions to our customers in the years to come. As long as the customers exist, we exist. PPPA: “Talk to Fiery”, do you see that coming into Asia? RK: Of course! Asian mobile phone users are much more educated than those from other parts of the world! You can walk on the street and see that everybody knows how to use a phone. Today’s market involves a lot of B2C (business to consumer), which applies to all demographics. Therefore, there is a great potential for this in Asia. In China, we have 97% market share in production printing. We hope to keep it this way in Asia and if possible, even improve it. PPPA: Printing on caskets…. You have a client in Netherlands called

Lifeart who produces printed caskets. Do you see that kind of “creativity” happening in Asia? RK: I think this has a lot to do with the flexibility of the machines. Customers should not limit their business because of equipment limitations. In our booth in Shanghai, we showcased variety of innovative applications, such as 3D backlit, 3D floor graphics, multilayer window graphics, and various wall and gallery applications, all aimed at high-end more profitable printing market. This type of event gives us the opportunity to share all these different creative and innovative ideas with our customers. Visitors at Shanghai show could get a feel for what we are doing in other

countries, They in turn will get creative and add their own twist, which will then inspire other folks to come up with new ideas. This evolution never ends and we are happy to support it. In fact, seeing this dynamic exchange and evolution is one of the benefits of my position.

Digital Technology

Helping you focus on what matters most Today, there is no shortage of digital print technology in the market, however differentiating each of the offerings is becoming very difficult. In consequence, when a supplier moves the discussion to looking at a printer’s business needs rather than focusing on products it is quite refreshing. Fuji Xerox are clearly stating this as their position after questioning more than 1000 print service providers worldwide and concluding that the journeys that print professionals go through to achieve their objectives is as important as the goals themselves. Further, that the most effective business partners were those that who help them succeed on every step of this journey. Fuji Xerox feel that years of experience in the market uniquely positions them to fulfill the role of supporting their customers in having flexibility in their operations, to embrace new technology, incorporate new ideas and adapting to changing circumstances.

The four top business objectives uncovered by the survey were: 1. Delighting customers In a single sentence, delighting your customers means exceeding their expectations, to create the best, most irreplaceable customer experience possible. This includes everything from: • Delivering outstanding image quality on every job • Saying “yes” to more of the jobs your customers request • Meeting the tightest turnaround times without fail • Backing it all up with exceptional

customer service It means taking the relationship beyond that of a print service provider and becoming a true strategic partner. It means going above and beyond to keep customers happy and coming back for more. 2. Producing more jobs With run lengths and turnaround times being shorter than ever, print service providers have to find ways to go from producing a smaller number of large jobs per day to a large number of small jobs. A recent InfoTrends™ report found that 50% of colour jobs have run lengths of less than1,000 and 70%

less than 5,000. There are a number of challenges here where Fuji Xerox says they can assist; • Automating workflows • Implementing web-to-print systems • Maintaining uptime and reliability • Reducing errors and reworks • Improving staff skills and effectiveness • Increasing employee productivity 3. Reducing costs Reducing costs is critical for the long term health of any company and enables the ability to invest in new technology and solutions that are necessary to maintain competitive edge. Rising prices are always a challenge, however, if you can find ways of controlling

errors and waste, minimise hand work in time and labour by identifying the most cost effective way to run each job it can mean that management and workers can be rewarded with an increase in personal income, or simply keep their jobs. 4. Growing the business To grow the business, requires a longterm strategy to differentiate it in the marketplace and provide real value to the customer. Growing the business is not just about producing more revenue, although it is an important aspect, but using the latest printing innovations to attract new customers whilst keeping the existing base satisfied. According to InfoTrends™

AIRDOT Ä C XY      

80% of print professionals indicated that digital printing has increased their company profits. Assistance based on experience to ensure that these processes are maximised would clearly be appreciated. So this is the proposition offered by Fuji Xerox, helping their customers every step of the way, allowing the print service provider to focus on what matters most to their business, helping them increase their print output, lowering their costs and delighting their customers whilst growing their business. Digital outdoor advertising gradually threatens static billboards Worries are brewing on outdoor advertising. You may end up watching videos played on the roads instead of static print ads in China. Printed billboards may just be martyred in due course in the republic. Christel Lee investigates. Before dismissals are hurled at this thought, the wide-format industry recently got riled up with the government of the world’s second largest economy for its latest regulation on luxury brands’ billboard advertising in the name of social security. China's capital imposed a rigid regulation on outdoor advertising that promotes hedonistic or high-end lifestyles as the government seeks to ease public concerns about the country's widening wealth gap. In early 2011, the Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce said in a

statement that businesses were given a deadline to rectify such ads, along with any that excessively promote "foreign" things. However, no specific details were defined. The statement added that such promotions help create a politically “unhealthy” climate. Violators reportedly could face fines of up to RMB30,000 (US$4,600). Additionally, there were new words forbidden, which include “supreme”, “royal”, “luxury” or “high-class”. These words were easily spotted on billboards for property, automotive and wine. In other extreme measures, a ban on words such

as “best”, “unique” or “irreplaceable” was implemented in Chongqing, the southwestern city in China. Salt was rubbed into the wound by a prediction from CLSA Asia-Pacific market in January this year that China would become the world’s largest luxury goods market by 2020! That translates to 44% of worldwide sales and bigger than the entire global market is now. LED with a vengeance Indeed, LED billboards tend to attract more attention. I recall a conversation with Malaysia-based Libroff Sdn Bhd

during last Fespa Asia. Dato Maarof, managing director, commented, “The business is more than it seems today. Gone are the days of static printing and joining pieces of PVC together to make a big billboard. Lightboxes have also gone beyond fluorescent bulbs!” With this coming from one of Malaysia’s biggest players, it’s left to everyone’s imagination on the possible scenario in China! The Chinese newspaper Economic Observer reported another bombshell. Experts in advertisement circles predict 3D outdoor advertising will create more than RMB10B (US$1.6B) in business in China over the next three years!

Members of the China Advertisement Association of Commerce held a forum in the first half of 2012 in Shanghai. The forum noted the republic’s outdoor advertising has entered a new era of 3D technology. Zhou Zhongrun, CEO of Shanghaibased advertisement company StrongChoice Media, explained the concept of the 4.0 era, which is characterised by 3D projection technology. In the 1.0 era, outdoor advertising was static. The introduction of neon lights, scrolling light boxes and other electric equipment led outdoor advertising into the 2.0 era. In the recent years, largesize LEDs have been widely used,

which opened the digitalised 3.0 era of outdoor advertising in China. Global DPN (digital-placed networks) revenues reportedly grew 11.8% to $5.09 billion in 2011, driven by doubledigit growth in the Asia-Pacific region – the largest and fastest growing region – fueled by the Chinese market, which is the region's biggest and strongest growing market, PQ Media estimates. Global DBB (digital billboards and signages) revenue increased 26% to $1.88 billion, fueled by positive measurement, regulation and agency perception trends in most of the leading markets in the four major

regions. China's overall DOOH (digital out-of-home) revenues surged 39.2% in 2011 to $1.44 billion. PQ Media’s report adds that the United States account for the largest DOOH market worldwide among 28 leading countries, generating $2.05 billion in 2011, followed by China and Japan. UK turns out to dominate in Europe, with $549 million generated in 2011. That is an 11.3% increase, partially influenced by activation on new locations and digitization of older sites for the upcoming Olympics. The world’s sixth largest economy, Brazil, had its market grow to $155 million in 2011 – 38% increase. Seemingly, Brazil is the only market that has grown for five consecutive years by PQ Media’s estimation.

One person, five printers and ORIS Color Management From the tiny local community of Bärweiler digital printer ZIETEK GmbH provides major exhibitions worldwide with highquality prints. ORIS Press Matcher // Web added a new quality level and absolute consistency to the production. Waldemar Zietek is an expert on advertising graphics and a man of the first hour. He learned the business from the ground up and completed his master certificate to open his own company in 1991. Back then, nobody talked about digital printing yet, therefore the company initially worked with milling machines for signage and advertising graphics, before moving on to thermo transfer systems from Gerber, which were in use until 1997. Amongst the biggest customers back then was one of the largest European insurance companies. Finally, in 2001 the company focused solely on digital printing and installed a 60'' Mutoh Rockhopper. "I produce graphics of all kinds for many wellknown corporations, but I get the jobs from just one client. For me this is an ideal situation, as I can completely concentrate on the production. At times, I had several employees in the company. Today I am on my own, but with the help of the latest technology I can work alone and still be more productive than ever. In general, the printers installed here hardly get older than a year and a half, before they are replaced. Over the years, I have pretty much had every common brand and

model on the market, always using the latest technology available. . For different applications, I either use dye-based or eco-solvent machines. After the first Mutoh, I had two 60'' Encads, then a number of HPs, Mimakis and four Canon iPF 9000, which I recently replaced with three Epson Stylus Pro 11880. On the ecosolvent side, I installed last year a Roland SolJET Pro III XC-540 and a XJ-640, which deliver an outstanding quality." In general, ZIE-TEK's final prints are always finished with a matte laminate, before they are sent off to the client. There the prints are checked, trimmed

and, if necessary, numbered, before they are shipped worldwide. Every corner of the production floor is occupied by machinery, computer hardware and substrates, perfectly organized, so that everything can be handled by just one person. Looking at numerous rolls of different media, Waldemar Zietek explains: "I mostly print on self-adhesive materials, but also for instance on backlit translucent film. The majority of the prints is being used indoors, but some also outside, particularly for short-term use. The different printing technologies and the variety of substrates require a lot of time-consuming profiling. Until a few years ago, customers were happy

Digital Technology with just large, colorful graphics on their booths. Today, they demand that the brand identity and their design guidelines are strictly kept. Not only does this mean that specific house colors are matched, but even images have to be absolutely consistent across all media. In other words, the color of images and graphics on an exhibition wall has to be exactly the same than for instance in a company brochure. That is also why I increasingly receive data in a standard color space like ISO Coated, together with a reference proof. These have then to be output on all machines in the same quality, quickly and efficiently. Lately, it became increasingly difficult and time-consuming to tweak profiles, just to get the color of a job about right. To make things worse, I am using different kinds of software RIPs with the printers. I was therefore delighted, when a supplier introduced me to a color server software to align all installed printers to one standard color space, and facilitate the reproduction of spot colors.

the end of the day the most important workflows were set up and I was able to achieve consistent results on all printers. One general problem is the quality of pdf data I receive from graphic designers. Included in ORIS Press Matcher // Web is an extensive preflighting and normalization tool, which takes care of nearly 90 % of all file related problems. Usually I generate flat pdf files in the ORIS application, because in the past I regularly had problems with transparencies which were not interpreted correctly by the printer's RIP. These RIPs are simply not designed for complex pdf files. Thanks to ORIS Press Matcher // Web, the color consistency across the fleet of printers is so good that today I can combine output from two completely different printers on one exhibition booth. Another advantage is the repeatability. Sometimes, though, I get files and no proofs, which make it difficult to determine in which color space the files were made. The new web-based version of ORIS Press Matcher will finally solve this problem too.

With the integrated ORIS softproof my customers can see a color accurate representation of the job on a calibrated monitor, which can then be electronically approved or corrections can be made, if necessary. For specific jobs, I have also recently purchased an Epson StylusPro 4900, which I will connect to the ORIS color management, too. Since the installation of the ORIS software, re-running previous jobs with exactly the same colors has become a snap. Many designs are regularly repeated. This caused a lot of effort in the past, particularly when a certain substrate was no longer available. On an alternative media, the result would be quite different. Since I have calibrated all printers to ISO coated standard, it is easy to reproduce previous results. In essence, ORIS Press Matcher took care of most of my problems." Whatever the future brings, with ORIS central color management ZIE-TEK is well-equipped to face any challenges.

After a trial period I decided to return the software, as the results were not what I expected. Shortly afterwards, ORIS Press Matcher // Web was suggested as an alternative. Given the past experience I was quite skeptical, but was positively surprised when a CGS application specialist installed the software and managed to get literally the same visual result from all printers, whether dye or eco-solvent. For each printer it took no more than two iterations to achieve results, which were well within the tolerances applying for proofing systems. In other words, at

Konica Minolta aims high with close to ¥100B by 2016 At the recent official opening of its regional headquarters in Singapore, Tadayuki Funakura, general manager of Konica Minolta Business Technologies, shared the organisation’s targets. Christel Lee reports. On 16 July 2012, Jun Haraguchi, executive director of Konica Minolta Business Technologies Inc., Japan, officially declared the new premises open, witnessed by an audience comprising media, Southeast Asian distributors and customers. Tadayuki Funakura, general manager of Konica Minolta Business Technologies’, revealed in his presentation that Europe, the United States and Japan are the organisation’s main source of revenue. However, the Japan-based press manufacturer has its focus in Asean, which Funakura indicates has the “largest market potential” for GDP. He also unveiled the organisation’s bold target of hitting close to ¥100B by 2016. Funakura added Singapore was selected for its central position to further enforce Konica Minolta’s grip on the Asian market and centralise the support function for the region. Support from the Singapore government, including a tax incentive, allows the company to vitalise human resources and organisation in the region.

Terence Gan, Deputy Director for Electronics from the state’s Economic Development Board, also graced the event. In his opening speech, he said, “Konica Minolta and Singapore have a longstanding relationship and we warmly welcome the opening of its regional headquarters here. This decision will add vibrancy to Singapore’s printing and imaging industry and it strengthens Singapore’s

role as a business hub for companies looking to grow in emerging Asia.” With the set up of the regional headquarters, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Asia Pte Ltd is poised for strong growth, projected to double its revenue by 2016 across the Southeast Asia region for office and production printing solutions. Haraguchi commented, “The regional team will manage, supervise and support the sales subsidiaries and distributors in Southeast Asia. Customers can expect faster turnaround response and value-added services, thus enriching their Konica Minolta experience and increasing our presence in the local markets.” Terence Gan, Deputy Director for Electronics, Economic Development Board

KSI increases productivity fourfold while improving colour quality by 30% Korea Studies Information Co., Ltd. (KSI), with more than 300 employees in Korea and China, has been providing academic organisations with a digitised service since the early 1990s, building up a database of about 14 million pages of scholarly journals. “The core strength of our print on demand business is no inventory overrun. Thanks to HP Indigo, we have been running our publishing business with no overrun for five years, even though we publish about 600 new titles each year.”

— Chae Jong Jun, president, KSI

Since 2004, the company has also become involved in the publishing business, producing more than 500 titles every year. KSI processes customised short-run production orders and large-volume production orders using a combination of HP Indigo Digital technology and offset printing. The evolving print industry With the acceleration of digitisation and the increasing popularity of eBooks, KSI expects that the majority of books will soon be digitised and the demand for paper books will gradually and naturally decline. As a result, it makes less sense for the company to maintain its current offset printing and distribution system. In anticipation of this trend, KSI is investing in new digital printing capabilities to open new opportunities for customised and personalised printing in smaller quantities.

“Already, not only in Korea, but in Europe, America and many other countries as well, publication volumes have been decreasing,” explains Chae Jong Jun, president, KSI. “They will continue to decline, and in that case, the print industry is bound to switch from the pre-existing offset market to digital printing platforms. Having forecast that future, we have been preparing for it for 12 years, and now we are at the forefront of it.” In previous years, KSI had invested in nine different HP Indigo Digital Presses so it could offer reasonable prices for short-run production and provide mass customisation and short delivery time. It was a natural choice therefore for the company to work with HP when it came to further extending its digital print capabilities. HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press quadruples productivity

In 2011, KSI added an HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press and HP Indigo 7500 Digital Press to further enhance KSI’s strong print on demand (POD) service capabilities and prepare the company for further growth. “Indigo’s biggest advantage is that right now, digital printers are at a cross-road,” adds Chae. “On one hand, there are systems that use toners; on the other there are systems that use liquid inks such as Indigo. The Indigo’s use of ink allows us to reproduce the traditional printing method more accurately and with excellent quality and so is best suited to our needs.” The new Indigo digital presses are delivering improved print quality and increased productivity. Accordingly, the cost of labour associated with hiring operators has been dramatically reduced.

Digital Technology Colour quality is particularly important for certain titles as KSI publishes more consumer-oriented books in addition to academic material.

“The production output of the HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press matches that of four HP Indigo press 5500 machines. The W7200, for example, can print in an hour, 14,400 pages in colour and 57,600 pages in black and white. With this increased productivity, the use of continuous feed over perpage has come to cost less. Therefore the print cost, which is the most important factor in printing, has decreased,” explains Chae. “And with the improved productivity, the expense spent on operators has been reduced by a significant amount.” New solution is more sustainable The increase in productivity and smarter use of paper is also helping KSI become more environmentally responsible – as is the nature of the POD business model. “In the relationship between the printing industry and the environment, paper is the asset most massively used. The Indigo W7200 is very sustainable in terms of cutting paper consumption. The typical per-page feed tends to have high paper loss value, but since the Indigo W7200 employs AT A GLANCE Industry: Publishing Business name: Korea Studies Information Co., Ltd. Headquarters : Paju Book City, Gyeonggi-do Website: www.kstudy.com CHALLENGE • Anticipating an acceleration of digitalisation and a reduction in demand for paper books, Korea Studies Information Co., Ltd (KSI) identified the need to transition from offset printing to digital without compromising quality. • KSI also needed a solution that would reduce excess stock and allow for small-volume printing.

rotation technology, it minimises paper loss,” adds Chae. “POD also makes positive contributions to the environment. The typical publishing business results in large volumes of waste inventory, but POD allows us to print only exactly what we need so that is environmentally responsible.” Best print quality and increased flexibility The HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press is also providing even better print quality compared to the previous presses, allowing KSI to deliver the best service – even at higher volumes. “In terms of image quality, it has changed from the previous printing technology of applying CMYK inks separately to applying them in one shot, allowing for clearer print quality,” explains Park Young Won, Director, Digital Printing Department, KSI. “For example, if you compare a previously printed booklet with one printed using the W7200, you will see that there’s about 30% improvement in color definition.” • To improve productivity and profitability KSI is always striving to become more efficient in order to compete effectively in a competitive market. SOLUTION The company added an HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press and an HP Indigo 7500 Digital Press with HP SmartStream Production Pro for fast-turnaround, to further enhance its strong print on demand service capabilities. RESULTS • KSI has doubled its print output, partly thanks to the increased productivity of the new Indigo presses, resulting in increased profits. • The ability to print in more flexible volumes

“Thus far, we have published about 6,000 titles and have distributed them through libraries and bookstores in Korea. Recently, we published a Korean cookbook using the Indigo W7200 model. Published for multicultural housewives living in Korea, this book presents Korea’s selection of daily dishes and describes the recipes in five different languages,” adds Park. “As the book showcases many dishes, colour quality was of utmost importance. The production schedule was also under a tight deadline, so rapid printing was essential.” The new Indigo Presses have also allowed KSI to schedule print runs of more than 500 which was previously not viable, enabling the company to bring in new business opportunities. “With the installation of the Indigo W7200 and the Indigo 7500, we have become able to print not just 500 copies but even over 1,000 copies. Going forward, I predict it will even become possible to print over 2,000 copies using these models,” concludes Park. “As a result, the print volume at Korean Studies Information Co., doubled in 2011 compared to the previous year. With this doubling, the productivity also improved. And with the improvement in productivity, the profitability has also increased.” ~ Chae Jong Jun, president, KSI KSI has minimised paper waste with the HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press allows KSI to deliver a broader range of services while enjoying the finest print quality. • The Indigo W7200 Digital Press can print four times faster than the previous model – delivering up to 14,400 pages in color and 57,600 pages in black and white every hour – enabling KSI to produce more books, more quickly. • 30% improvement in colour fidelity ensures output is indistinguishable from traditional offset printing. • KSI is enjoying reduced costs due to the continual feed rapid printing technology which requires fewer manual operators. • KSI has minimised paper waste because the HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press employs rotation technology for maximum efficiency.

First 75DI in the UK to replace three conventional presses Presstek, Inc. a leading supplier of digital offset printing solutions to the printing and communications industries, today announced that RCS Plc of Retford, Notts, UK, has ordered a five-color Presstek 75DI digital offset press with an inline aqueous coater. This is the first 75DI to be installed in the UK. RCS is one of the UK’s most prestigious printers and occupies a 43,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility. The firm plans to replace three conventional offset presses with its new Presstek 75DI-AC. “One of the important criteria in our selection process was the small environmental footprint of the 75DI press,” said Michael Todd, Owner and Managing Director of RCS. “Its waterless printing, on-press chemistry-free imaging and reduced waste support our environmental sustainability efforts. We spend a great deal of time thinking about how to reduce the impact of our activities, and replacing three conventional offset presses with the environmentally friendly 75DI will make a huge difference in that regard. When we saw the press at drupa 2012, we knew it would be our next acquisition.” “We are so excited to be working with a firm as well-known, versatile and committed to environmental sustainability as RCS,” said Axel Thien, Presstek’s President of the Europe, Africa and Middle East Region. “I am confident that RCS will be delighted with the Presstek 75DI once it is installed, not only in terms of its small environmental footprint, but also with the quality and productivity it will contribute to the

operation. RCS is accustomed to using stochastic screening and will be able to continue that service with the 75DI without any extra work or effort.” In addition to looking for an environmentally sustainable solution, RCS was seeking a press that could address the growing volume of very high quality short runs. “Like most printers today,” Todd adds, “we are seeing both run lengths and turnaround times drop. The Presstek 75DI will allow us to continue to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations. Its 6-minute makeready means we can profitably handle more jobs in one day on a single press than we could with our previous configuration at quality levels that we believe will thrill our customers. We also look forward to leveraging the 75DI to help our Resellers increase their activity. We’re

really looking forward to getting this press installed.” The Presstek 75DI is a highly automated 29” (B2+ format) digital offset press that is available in 4- to 10-color configurations. It has a full range of productivity enhancing options, including an inline coater. The 75DI features support for 300 lpi and FM screening, 6-minute job-to-job turnover (including on-press plate imaging), and a small environmental footprint. The press prints up to 16,000 sheets per hour.

Dainippon Screen Singapore encourages entrepreneurship Owner of award-winning printing company Innojet, Terence Cheah, took the plunge and ventured into a field he’s never been in – wide-format. He explains to Christel Lee of Print Pack Publish Asia what and who gave him the push. When asked about the rationale behind the major switch in field, Cheah remains candid. “Packaging is certainly a field that is still developing. It’s tough for players, moreover even young entrepreneurs like us, to bring ourselves up a notch due to financing – the cost of equipment and labour. That surprisingly turns out to be an opportunity for me to attempt wide-format production,” he shares. Cheah used to be an offset press operator in a printing firm for eight straight years prior to becoming a broker for print jobs for three years, and eventually started his own firm, Ultimate Packaging Pte Ltd. The company won a Bronze medal in the Asian Print Awards 2011, whose gala was held in Bangkok, Thailand. The machine used to produce the winning entry was Truepress Jet2500UV. Cheah has also debunked a myth about digital printing along the way. “Businesses tend to be skeptical about adopting digital print in Singapore due to the price of equipment. Though the price tag can be a hindrance, many fail to appreciate the lean approach it has on print. Additionally, there is a difference between running an offset press and a digital press – the skills needed.

Terence Cheah, Sales Manager, and Lewis Ko, General Manager of Innojet with his team You don’t need skills to operate a digital press,” he notes. Taking it a step further, he illustrates: “Digital print need not involve multiple parties. One could take a file and go direct. This alone eliminates a few steps in comparison to conventional print, resulting in time and cost savings.” Since its inception in February this year, the five-member-team at Innojet has been focusing on the glass business. To date, it boasts six-figure revenue, which is substantial for a start-up in its first five months of business!

While many adopt the current method of printing on glass, or pasting on glass, he realised many of such samples did not pass the stress test. “The paint was coming off, cracks were spotted on the glass – resulting in risks of safety,” he lamented. Cheah shared he took six months to study how best to produce decorative glass. Repeated failures in quality tests resulted in his current business model and the rest is history. “All we want is to reduce both material and labour costs in the process. That translates up to 30% in both time and costs savings with our current business model,” he notes. Screen’s equipment helping Ultimate Packaging snag a medal in the Asian Print Awards in 2011 was also the “key” to making Cheah’s Innojet Asia take off possible. “Screen offers excellent support and they are flexible. Their equipment uniqueness is a trait not many printers picked up and quality itself is a force to be reckoned with,” he adds. Innojet is also planning to add another press to the stable and expand its clientele base within the next year, with the aim to deliver the goods more effectively.

Sheetfed Offset 33 S. Pack and Print (S. Pack) Company Limited, based in Songkhla, engages in the manufacture and sale of corrugated and duplex board packaging products and also provides offset printing services in two factories. The print shop recently completed the installation of a Speedmaster CD 1024+L. In the past, the company was equipped with used equipment from various suppliers. After the Japanese company Oji bought a shareholding of S. Pack in 2011, the production was restructured – the used equipment did not meet their expectations. Since S. Pack’s customers are satisfied with the performance of the Speedmaster CD 102, the company plans to purchase a second Speedmaster CD 102-6+L for a third factory to be opened early next year. Green Life Printing, a new Thai print shop established as a partnership project between the companies HN Group and Print City, definitely is a green printer. The customer decided in favor of a Speedmaster SM 102 four-color press and benefits from Heidelberg Thailand’s knowledge on green printing and HEI ECO. Green printers project a growingly positive image to the market. The ideal press for commercial print shops: India’s commercial and packaging printers primarily opt for the Speedmaster SM 74 from Heidelberg. Commercial and packaging printer Ratna Offsets Ltd. installed a brandnew Speedmaster SM 74 four-color plus a Polar cutter 115 XC Plus. In addition, the customer signed for a Suprasetter A 75 to be installed in fiscal year 2013. The Ahmadabad-based company employs a workforce of around 50. The Speedmaster SM 74 is an ideal printing press for commercial print shops focusing on solid growth. Owner Dr. Vipul Shanker Pandya founded his company in 1980. New-Delhi-based Maatti Design recently installed a Speedmaster SM 74 five-color standard pile machine. The company, founded in 2005, consists of a team of product designers from various fields of expertise. The former competition customer invested in Heidelberg and now works with his first sheetfed offset printing press in their press room. The commercial and

packaging printer also decided in favor of a new Polar cutter. A brand new Speedmaster SM 74-4-H has been installed at Modest Graphics in Delhi. Also a former competition customer, Modest Graphics invested for the first time in Heidelberg. The decision in favor of Heidelberg resulted from two facts: best technology and best value for money. With the new machine installed, the company successfully started its export business. Agarwal Print Media (Agarwal), a commercial and packaging printer located in the small district Meerut at Uttar Pradesh, has made a big step forward: The company with a workforce of more than 50 has installed a brand new Speedmaster SM 74 fourcolor, a Suprasetter A 105 and a Polar 115 XC Plus cutting machine. Agarwal, which almost concluded a deal with a competitor, has built a new state-ofthe-art building to have their machines running under one roof. New Delhi-based commercial printer India Offset just installed a new Speedmaster CD 102 four-color. Before the new press was commissioned, the print shop had been running A1 size presses from a competitor. With the new Speedmaster CD 102 the productivity level is now at least four times higher than before. India Offset supplies the government, corporations, and organizations all over India with magazines, annual reports, books, labels, calendars, folders and much more. Kamala Printing Press is a commercial printer with a workforce of around 30. Based in Varanasi, a district of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, the customer

has invested in a Speedmaster SM 744, which is just being shipped from Germany to India. The Speedmaster SM 74 is the first brand new press in this area and will replace a second hand competition machine. Malaysia’s first Speedmaster SX 102 eight-color perfecting press goes to Percetakan Nasional Malaysia Bhd (PNMB). The wholly owned unit of the Ministry of Finance opted for the Heidelberg press on the occasion of drupa 2012. The growing customer demand for fast turnaround times and excellent quality at a reasonable prize prompted PNMB to invest in Heidelberg’s latest technology. Established in 1888, PNMB was incorporated in 1993 becoming wholly owned by the Ministry of Finance in Malaysia. The company’s services include general printing, variable data printing, security printing as well as document and imaging management solutions. PNMB is located in Putrajaya, a planned city located 25km south of Kuala Lumpur. Since 1999, Putrajaya has served as the federal administrative center of Malaysia. Singapore commercial printer Asiawide Print Holdings Pte Ltd. (Asiawide) is committed to delivering high quality by means of latest technology. Following the investment in a Stahlfolder Ti 52 in 2011, the company decided to install a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75 in late January 2012. Additional orders include the latest Prinect Pressroom Manager and the Prinect mobile solutions. Reasons for the print shop’s choice are manifold: the well-known brand, reliability as well as the expertise of the Heidelberg staff and commitment in providing total solutions.

Sheetfed Offset Zero-play antifriction bearings have long helped to cut energy consumption by KBA Rapida presses

Reducing energy input on high-output presses Sheetfed offset printing is an energy-intensive process. So it is all the more important to develop energy-efficient assemblies and to utilise waste heat wherever possible. Koenig & Bauer (KBA) has long been pursuing this train of thought in the interests of its customers and the environment, and has come up with some useful ideas. With a sheetfed offset press, the amount of energy consumed depends to a large extent on the type of job being printed. Alongside general efforts to optimise energy efficiency, from which any printer would benefit, there are some additional options for reducing the primary energy input where the financial outlay would only be worthwhile for specific print applications. Given the diversity of the production parameters involved, determining the potential benefits of recovering and reutilising waste heat off the press in the most effective way required a series of precise measurements taken over a prolonged period of time. Drawing on a solid foundation of captured data, KBA has developed an array of standard and optional features

for enhancing the energy efficiency of Rapida presses from the feeder to the delivery. The most effective examples are given below. Efficiency-enhancing four-quadrant drives Rapidas are fitted with four-quadrant drives which enhance overall press efficiency by feeding braking energy back into the grid. This has proven particularly effective at reducing power consumption during makeready processes. KBA favours direct belt drive onto the first impression cylinder. Shaftless DriveTronic feeder KBA’s DriveTronic feeder has no mechanical gears, longitudinal shafts or other energy-guzzling consumable parts. In their place are direct drives which are much more efficient.

Proportional valves, in conjunction with a self-regulating air-compression cabinet, ensure that only the volume of blower and suction air actually required at the sheet separator is provided. This means a lower energy input for the air supply. Individual, distributed blowers at the suction belt ensure an energyefficient sheet transport. DriveTronic SIS sidelay-free infeed Unlike mechanical or pneumatic systems, KBA’s sidelay-free DriveTronic SIS infeed, which is now available as an option in every format class, requires no air suction and therefore also reduces the amount of energy consumed by the air-supply system. reduced backlash allow the impression cylinders and transfer drums to be rotated with very little effort using a hand crank. This bearing technology, which has been incorporated in KBA presses for many years now, is a major factor in cutting the Rapidas’ energy consumption. The venturi effect is

its own can deliver a total energy saving of around 3kW per inking unit. It is also good for the environment and the budget, since it eliminates the need for costly roller paste and the time spent applying it and washing it off.

An optimised reflector geometry and better heat management at the radiators improve energy efficiency when drying exploited to reduce the volume of blown air applied at the sheet guides. Spoilers at the transfer drums are effective in preventing undercurrents. Fewer rollers in the printing unit The number of rollers in the inking unit has been reduced to promote a quicker response. At the same time the single-ribbon ink train has been optimised to minimise abrasion and energy losses. The same applies to the triple-roller dampening unit. The ability to disengage inking units not required for the production run is a further energy-saving option. This on

systems dramatically enhances the efficiency of the coating systems as well. For example, the VariDryBlue infrared/hot-air dryers with heat recovery cut energy input by as much as 50 per cent compared to conventional systems. The new VariDry UV dryers have also been made much more energy efficient by optimising reflector geometry and heat management at the radiation units, thus substantially increasing the level of radiation efficiency. The use of electronic ballasts delivers further savings by reducing energy consumption in stand-by mode. Free cooling of temperature control circuit Another energy-saving option KBA offers is free cooling of the temperaturecontrol circuit. With this system, where the outside temperature is low enough the return circuit is coupled directly to the temperature-control circuit. The level of utilisation depends on plant location and the volume of waste heat generated. Test measurements revealed that free cooling was effective for more than 1,000 hours, the equivalent of 11.5 per cent of the annual total.

The KBA AirTronic delivery has fewer blower pipes and thus consumes less air. Energy-efficient venturi nozzles help to stabilise the air-cushioned sheet travel. Aerodynamic spoilers at the gripper carriages maximise energy efficiency by optimising air currents. Less air resistance and improved sheet guidance automatically reduce air consumption.

Assuming 220 working days, each with two shifts, as the operating time for the dual-purpose cooling system, and an average power rating of 6kW for the temperature-control circuit, this represents a total input of 20.9MWh from the cooling circuit. If all other parameters remain unchanged, 1,000 hours of free cooling per year would cut power consumption to 6.45MWh. In the best-case scenario free cooling would be available for 3,000 operating hours, resulting in a potential cost saving of up to â‚Ź850 per year.

cabinet should always be water-cooled. By modifying the deployment of different types of compressor energy input for the air supply can be cut by up to 24MWh per year compared to rival cabinets. This is equivalent to a saving of 28 per cent in electricity consumption. Utilising waste heat in the return cooling circuit The waste heat emitted by the press and the water-cooled ancillary devices, and recovered via the return circuit, is potentially a major source of energy, eg for heating purposes. However, it is advisable to consider a number of factors prior to utilising this energy. If the plant is heated via an economical high-temperature system, there is a problem.

Temperature at the dual-purpose cooling device (long-term measurement)

The average temperature in the coolingcircuit feed flow is 40°C. The feed flow of a high-temperature heating system is generally around 70°C to 80°C and the return flow 50°C to 60°C. It is therefore inadvisable to re-utilise directly the heat in the return cooling circuit, since it would cool the heating circuit. One way of circumventing this would be to install a heat pump, which would raise the temperature from 40°C to the level required for heating. A feasibility study for such an installation would have to factor in the cost of substituting gas for the

heating, the different levels of usage (heating only in the winter months, press not continuously in operation) and the energy consumed by the heat pump. In the most favourable scenario the return on investment would be around 15 years, which would make the installation uneconomical. If, however, the printing plant is a new build with a low-temperature heating system, waste heat from the return circuit can be used to reduce energy consumption for heating. Waste heat could also be used relatively easily to heat the paper stores or similar. Reutilising exhaust air from the IR dryer Some of the energy contained in dryer exhaust air can be re-utilised directly via a heat exchanger to pre-warm the air entering the dryer, thus reducing energy input. Much bigger savings can be achieved by cooling the exhaust air and warming the inflowing air via an exhaust heat pump. Depending on the press type, this can deliver energy savings of up to 50MWh per year.

Reutilising the air circulated in the dryer can substantially reduce the amount of energy consumed by KBA VariDryBlue dryers compared to conventional infrared/hot-air dryers

Printing Industry to Undergo Major Changes Mr.Komori shares his views on the future of the printing industry Ferrostaal Thailand, one of the leading providers of consumables, equipment and after sales service for the graphic arts and packaging industry in Thailand and the accredited sales and service representative of Kormori Corporation invited Mr. Yoshiharu Komori to share his views on the future of the printing industry while on a visit to Thailand to meet existing and new customers. Mr.Yoshiharu Komori, Chairman, President and CEO of Komori Corporation, a world renowned manufacturer of printing machinery predicts that the printing industry will face major changes over the next 10 years as new technologies are developed and introduced and as customers demand for high quality printing continues to grow. Mr. Komori believes that these technologies will change the face of the printing industry and mean that manufactures will have to move with the times or be left behind. Mr.Komori, stated that since 2008 there has already been a major change in the industry with some players downsizing and shutting down as the global economic

situation has particularly affected the printing industry in the US and Europe which has had a negative effect on other markets and confidence in those markets have contracted. In addition, there has been a drastic change in the structure of printing companies brought about by the development of new technologies such as digital printing as well as changing demand from customers who are moving more towards short run production rather than long run production and are demanding faster turnaround. The continuing dominance of offset printing technology to remain Mr.Komori stated that offset printing

technology will continue its dominance in the market over the next ten years especially for large print runs and on quality, but will face challenges from new and improved printing technologies that are being developed and introduced. Digital printing, which is the first real challenge to offset printing technology still faces major cost and quality challenges and today only represents 2% of the total global print market. These cost issues, which means only small print runs of up to 200 sheets are cost effective, and the lower quality of the printing means that it will not make any major inroads into the offset printing market. However, Mr.Komori believes that a new technology that is a combination of digital and offset printing will be developed that will provide high quality L-R: Toshiyasu Kubotera, General Manager (Asia Pacific and Latin America) Overseas Sales Group of Komori, Pat S. Sheetfed Offset and cost effective printing over the next 10 years and that this will become the new printing technology standard for the industry and will rapidly take over from the traditional offset printing and current digital printing methods. As a result of this developing trend Komori Corporation is actively investing in the development of new innovative technologies and it is this investment that is enabling us to maintain our global market and the loyalty of our customers. Our latest innovative technology which is revolutionizing printing operations developed by the Komori Graphic Technology Center jointly with ink suppliers and paper companies is called H-UV and is becoming extremely successful and today accounts for up to 70% of our new deliveries to the Japanese domestic market. H-UV technology meets many of our customers’ demands for print quality and reducing cost through efficient power usage, automation which reduces manpower costs, shorter drying periods for faster turnaround of projects and is environmentally friendly. We have received good orders first from Japan, then China and we are now targeting the US where customer prefers to use the H-UV technology for the long machines (eight or ten colour) and Europe where six colour machines are now using H-UV technology so we are confident this is a trend setting technology. As yet no Thai company has invested in H-UV technology, but we are confident that many companies will be interested in the quality and cost savings they can achieve with this technology. Investment in H-UV is less than traditional UV so initial investment is

However, even with the higher cost of ink H-UV technology running costs are still cheaper than traditional UV technology making it a very attractive proposition for our customers. New technologies combining digital and offset methods to drive industry in future Komori is also investing in the development of digital printing and we recently announced our partnership with Landa which improves on the traditional inkjet idea of printing but instead of printing directly onto paper, which is very hard to achieve good quality, Landa’s technologies applies the ink to a blanket which is then dried allowing for a very sharp dot to be

created on the paper. So, as it is an idea similar to offset printing we are now working together to develop various ways to create an affordable and high quality printing machine for the future. Mr.Komori expects the development phase to take a further 1-2 years before this new technology will be available commercially. Komori in Thailand In Ferrostaal, we have found a very able and competent agent for sales and servicing of our commercial printing machines. Ferrostaal’s outreach to our existing and potential customers has been extremely good and we are expecting great things from them as we continue to work together to support the demands of the Thai printing industry by developing and supplying products that they want.

important to offer customers impressive quality, optimum reliability, and fair prices," explains Ernst-Otto Jäger, one of the managing directors of Foto-Litho-Jäger in Kassel, Germany. Founded in 1949, the print shop operates two Printmaster GTO 52 presses and has added digital printing to its portfolio. "We'd had nothing but positive experiences with our GTO 52 two-color press in terms of fast setup, smooth paper travel, and stable inking. In 2010, we therefore decided to add a GTO 52 four-color press with Prinect Classic Center, as the hourly rate can be kept very low for both presses and the GTO fits well into our overall concept," explains Jäger. The eight staff use the GTO presses for very short runs, art prints, letterheads, flyers, and brochures for customers in the region and other print shops that no longer support the 36 x 52 cm format. FotoLitho-Jäger systematically focuses on sustainable print production based on alcohol-free printing on FSC-certified paper and 100 percent green electricity. Ongoing further development ensures state-of-the-art features New developments such as the Prinect Classic Center or the alcohol-free direct continuous dampening system for eco-friendly printing ensure that the Printmaster GTO 52 continues to enjoy market success even after 40 years. The Prinect Classic Center combines precision with straightforward operation. The membrane keypad on the user-friendly central console is used for all ink and register settings. Settings can also be stored for repeat jobs. The excellent print quality is achieved thanks to a high-volume inking unit

with a storage capacity of 1:6.5 for high-quality processing of solid colors. Four oscillating inking form rollers help prevent ghosting, which is a

particular advantage on surfaces with negative cut-outs. The alcohol-free direct continuous dampening system has an extended working window that applies a thin, even film of dampening solution for a fast and stable ink/water balance. What's more, the inking and dampening system can be washed in a single pass. Bearer to bearer pressure between plate and blanket cylinder enable precise transfer of the print image onto the substrate, while highprecision Heidelberg printing units ensure a long service life and the robust design for which the GTO is renowned.

Newspaper press delivers its potential for Tianjin, China With commissioning now complete on its new two-tower Goss Newsliner 4x1 press, Tianjin Evening News Group has expressed ‘unreserved satisfaction' at performance figures achieved since installation. Key to these findings is the new capability to produce two separate publications through one folder. In choosing the Newsliner press, Tianjin Evening News Group was looking for a high-specification press rated at up to 80,000 copies per hour that would enhance capacity and flexibility while achieving cost advantages. With a web width of up to 1562mm, the new double-width, single circumference Newsliner press is configured as two four-over-four towers. It has a Goss 2:3:3 jaw folder featuring double independent folding couples and an upper former providing the crucial ability to simultaneously handle two individual titles with different circulations. This provides cost benefits through maximizing savings on consumables while boosting press utilization. The press is also

equipped with ink registration and ink leveling systems. Tianjin Evening News Group has been a long-term Goss newspaper press user, and the latest installation complements production off four 2x2 (single wide, double circumference) Goss Universal and three 2x1 Universal presses. Mr. Li Shengli, vice president of Tianjin Evening News Group considers the strong working relationship with Goss International a vital ingredient to the success of this project, "Naturally, the advanced features and overall capabilities of the equipment is first and foremost when making an investment of this magnitude and significance, but it certainly helps in the decision when

System receives 2012 InterTech™ Technology Award Printing Industries of America has announced that the QuadTech Color Control and Web Inspection System with AccuCamTM is a recipient of its prestigious InterTech Technology Award. Since 1978, the award has "honored the development of technologies predicted to have a major impact on the graphic communications and related industries." According to Dr. Mark Bohan, Vice President, Technology and Research at Printing Industries of America, "The judges were impressed with the system's ability to control color and provide automatic water control to minimize scumming in newspapers. As one of the judges said: 'I wish I had this in the past. It would have made my life so much easier!' Color control without color bars is the future. This eliminates waste and enhances the visual appearance of print." The AccuCam system provides fully automatic closed-loop color control by controlling the ink-key settings. An image-based system, AccuCam eliminates the need for unsightly gray bars or color bars. Using pre-press image files to create L*a*b* target aim point values, its proprietary sixchannel spectral sensor measures the printed web and calculates the L*a*b* values of the entire image. Then the system brings the printed image to the specified target values and automatically maintains the color quality throughout the production run. Besides advanced image-based color control, the system also provides reliable warnings of many common printing faults such as catch up (scumming), creasing, transposed plates, and tramlines. Recent research and development efforts have resulted in a new AccuCam water control capability, in which the system monitors and controls press damping levels. Requirements for the award include testimonials from users of the technology who will comment on its

performance in a production setting. Recommendations for AccuCam were made by Mr. Mark Ellington (Group Technical Services Director, Newsprinters), Mr. Ulrich Müller (Technical Director, Herold Druck), and Mr. Toru Uesaka, (Director, Production Bureau,The Sankei Shimbun). Karl Fritchen, President of QuadTech, comments: "We're honored to receive this recognition from Printing Industries of America. Our AccuCam technology is the result of close development partnerships with some of the most advanced printers in the world. And of course, congratulations

are due to our product development team at QuadTech, who are second to none when it comes to technology innovation in the print industry." Vince Balistrieri, QuadTech Director of Engineering and GM of Commercial & Newspaper adds: "The AccuCam system has a proven track record of reducing waste and delivering consistent quality. Our development partnerships will help us to continue adding more features and capabilitiesfurther strengthening printers' ability to grow and increase profit margins. We're very excited about what AccuCam can do for newspaper and retail insert printers throughout the world."

Toray’s Sustainable Approach to Printing Toray Industries Inc. will show how its ecological and economical waterless technology can help the newspaper industry meet the challenges of a rapidly changing marketplace on its Info Services Expo, Stand 3, at the 64th World Newspaper Congress and 19th World Editors Forum

“High quality waterless printing delivers a sustainable way of improving profitability,” comments Mr Junichi Ishii, Sales Manager for Graphics and Chemical sections, Toray International Europe GmbH. “We want to communicate how the long-term ecological benefits such as elimination of chemicals and the reduction in water consumption can be achieved while overall quality is improved. The World Newspaper Congress which includes a well attended editors forum, is the biggest international event for newspaper publishers. With so many key decision makers in one place it is the perfect platform to show newspaper publishers that adopting a superior printing technology can be an effective approach to enhance their business models.” Print samples from real life applications of waterless printing by major newspaper printers in Western Europe will be showcased. Highlights will in-

clude remarkable quality advertisements, in cold set with coating, from German newspaper printer Freiburger Druck. Mr Ishii says: “The print quality achieved in these samples are recognized as unachievable with a standard newspaper press but possible with KBA Cortina press and Toray waterless plates.”

Other samples will include special editions printed on green newsprint and high end fashion magazine adverts by Eco Print Center, Belgium. Waterless printing also helps a company position itself as environmentally conscientious while achieving the very best quality in both heat set and cold set. The latter is evidenced by seven waterless KBA Cortina press users from Finland, Germany and Switzerland who were awarded membership in the “International Newspaper Color Quality Club 20122014” which is a once-every-two-years opportunity. Mr Ishii concludes: “Investing in this technology enables waterless newspaper printers to successfully diversify into semi-commercial printing allowing for the smooth transition into a greater range of print possibilities. This expansion of production capabilities helps operations broaden their portfolios and in turn their profitable opportunities. What could be more attractive for an industry under such unprecedented pressure?”

COLORMAN e:line – Harmony of form and function What constitutes good design for an industrial product? The ideal combination of function, materials and form. Nothing has changed here since Bauhaus times. The internal technological values of a machine need to be right, it must be user-friendly and have an attractive appearance. Admittedly, rating design always involves a certain subjectivity. Nevertheless, the COLORMAN e:line is definitely causing a sensation in the industry. In reader polling for the most attractive drupa machine designs conducted by a German trade magazine, the COLORMAN e:line took second place, and was among the Top Ten for the Industriepreis 2012 that is awarded every year by the Initiative Mittelstand. The product designers of The Kaikai Company in Munich are responsible for the new design of the COLORMAN e:line. Tim R. Wichmann, Managing Director and Marketing Director: “We believe that good product design should always serve to convey intelligent innovations, and not hide product defects. The rapidly changing market for consumer goods stimulates us in trend sport areas – here one must be on the ball. But what really gives us great satisfaction is to design – and above all implement – capital goods so perfectly that the design is timeless and achieves much more than “only” looking good.”

Observers of the COLORMAN e:line immediately notice the use of new materials for the press exterior. “By using modern and intelligent materials, new form languages and functions are possible,” explains Christian Jaeger, General Manager and Creative Director at The Kaikai Company. Instead of sheet metal, that has limitations in design and haptic qualities, the designers opted for plastic with a durable surface that can be painted and coated entirely differently and is also easy to clean. This gives the COLORMAN e:line an elegant overall appearance thanks to large open surfaces, striking interstices, and emotion-arousing strip lights integrated in the protective covering that accentuate the functions. Changing colors show the printer the actual operating status of the press. If for instance the APL (Automatic Plate Loading) function is active, the lights are orange, and if the press is in production, the lights are blue. The final result is a truly new and revolutionary elegance in printing press design.

The COLORMAN e:line design celebrated its world premiere at drupa 2012 in Düsseldorf – and was promptly voted as one of the most attractive machine designs.

At the most, a blender design can work for a limited time with consumer goods. With capital goods such as a printing press, a harmonious overall concept is needed. Low energy consumption, ergonomically sound, and efficient The highlights of the COLORMAN e:line concept include good accessibility, maintenance- and user-friendliness, operation of the entire pressline from the control console level, and resourceconserving design. The roller washing devices are easily accessed from outside the press. Outstanding among the numerous automation features are the fully-automated plate logistics system APL logistics, and the fully-automated APL plate changing system. During production, the printer can deliver the next set of plates for the APL system to a soundproof area where a lift brings the plates to the working position of the plate loading robot. The user manages all the plates from the control console level and can check them at a glance. The new manroland operating concept makes the user a pilot who has all production processes under complete control. The functions are centrally accessed via an intuitively operated touch screen where display and operation are merged. Users can now see and control everything at a glance: their own actions and the status of the press. The fully revised screen design impresses with unsurpassed clarity and, together with the new autoprint menu, takes the next great step forward. Independent of time and place, the printer controls and adjusts press settings with the MobilPad as an additional mobile console, and the UnitPad for operating the printing units during work on the press.

Visitors to the booth loved the new yet familiar surroundings and experiences. The more than 3,000 printing plates making up the presentation had already been imaged and, as such, also reflected

Taiwanese printing companies repeat press orders

A leading Taiwan enterprise, the Ting Hsin International Group, the largest instant noodle manufacture in the world, has been running 10 manroland sheetfed offset six-color ROLAND 700 presses and operating 3 shifts, for 23 hours continuously, every day since they set up their own printing house in 2007. As Ting Hsin International’s products demand superior print quality and high volume production, after a series of rigorous tests and careful comparison with other well-known leading global press brands they once again ordered a six-color ROLAND 700 which not only met but exceeded their requirements. The average output per machine per year is around 90 – 100 million sheets. The manroland press achieved higher efficiency and higher productivity. Another prestigious Taiwanese packaging print company, Shang Yang Printing, has also placed a number of repeat orders.

They ordered their first manroland sixcolor ROLAND 900 press with coating unit in the early 1990s, as their production requirements grew they purchased their second manroland sheetfed offset fivecolor 3B Plus format ROLAND 700 and in 2011 expanded further with a six-color ROLAND 900 press. To meet further growth, a six-color ROLAND 700 HiPrint with coating unit is planned for later this year. Mr Wei, General Manager of Shang Yang Printing said, “We have been in close partnership with manroland for decades and we are satisfied with their advanced press technology and efficient service keeping us competitive in the fast moving print industry. We trust and rely on manroland!”

Benefits from increased performance, flexibility & highest quality coding

Situated in Alsace in Eastern France bordering Germany and Switzerland, is the picturesque region of Ribeauvillé, home to the famous Carola brand of natural mineral waters which is now part of the Nestlé Group. Founded in 1888 by Dr Staub who named the spring in honour of his sweetheart Caroline, the Carola range which includes slightly sparkling and sparkling natural and flavoured spring water, has established an enviable reputation amongst restaurateurs and gourmets for the quality of its product and is today distributed to over 25 regions in the East of France. As a further endorsement of its renowned reputation, in 2010/11 the celebrated world rally champion Sebastien Loeb, himself a native of Alsace, became an ambassador for Carola’s qualities of dynamism and competitive spirit. Following the recent installation of a Domino D320i laser coding solution into its glass bottling line, which has delivered increased production flexibility and the highest quality laser coding, Carola is this year taking the opportunity to highlight its 130+ year heritage by introducing a new visual identity across its entire product range, including its 1litre and 500ml glass bottles. The water from the spring, located 150 m underground, is piped into buffer storage tanks before being bottled, thus

As a company of the Nestlé Group, Carola is renowned as much for its distinctive identity and quality of its water, as it is for its environmental policy and high safety standards. José Lefort, Operations Manager at the Ribeauvillé facility explains, "In 2011 our plant was rewarded within the Nestlé group for its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its processes. More than 98% of our waste is recycled through the resale of caps, glass and plastic. In 2011 we reduced our energy and water consumption by 20% that's a record!" It was this same concern for the environment that prompted the company to opt for laser technology to code its bottles of water, the different types - sparkling, slightly sparkling and so on - being easily recognised by their red, blue or green colour. Carola was the first to introduce this colour coding, which is so well known to consumers today. The company carried out a comparative study of various laser models available on the market before finally opting for the next generation Domino D320i compact scribing lasers. Having used an original Domino DDC3 dot matrix laser coder to code directly onto the bottle on its PET production line since 2002, Carola was confident of the capabilities of the Domino technology, and therefore took

advantage of the launch of Domino’s new D320i to equip its glass bottling operation. On the glass line, the label is affixed to the bottles once they emerge from the bottling system. The D320i then laser scribes the best before date and time of bottling onto the label. "The new laser had to be reliable and easy to control," says Lefort. "The quality of marking is essential to the consumer. Since installing the D320i laser at the end of 2011, we've been extremely impressed with its performance and quality. Our customers are also very satisfied with the excellent readability of the codes." Lefort continues, "We carry out visual checks on the production line and the D320i significantly improves readability - the printed code is of a very high quality. In addition, the D320i has given us the crucial flexibility to respond to frequent changes in bottle format on the line." Having used the new Domino D320i for a few months, Carola Maintenance Manager Gilles Oehler adds, "I was already very familiar with the DDC3, but even so, the D320i is very simple to use. It requires minimal intervention and maintenance and the interface is very intuitive. For operators, changes and message backups with the associated parameters are quick and easy. A few months ago we still had to replace the coder and make various mechanical adjustments every time we wanted to change formats. With the D320i, this is no longer the case - it adapts very quickly to technical constraints." Number of Employees: 52 Production: 60 million bottles per year Quality: Over 200 checks per day
