The annual Asian Print Awards was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the print and packaging industries across Asia. With more than half the world’s population represented in this fast growing area, communication in the form of printed matter links Asia’s diverse cultures. It is imperative that such print achievements do not go unrecognised, especially among the population base that Asia enjoys. The Awards are judged on a wholly quality-oriented set of criteria to ensure that fair play is enacted at all times. The Independent Judging Panel comprises highly qualified personnel from within Asia and around the world. The independent judging panel has no knowledge of the actual entrants details. ALL ENTRIES ARE NUMBER-CODED. Entries must be commercially produced work. The Asian Print Awards is the only regional print quality competition of its kind in Asia. Supported by leading industry-supply companies, any progressive quality print house should enter and prove that they are the best - by winning the Gold, Silver or Bronze award. Proving pride in quality awareness is what customers love to see. It’s not just empty words, you can prove it.

In late March, an international, independent jury of industry experts deliberated and examined over hundreds of submissions from all over Asia to determine Gold, Silver and Bronze winners. Some categories were not awarded winners as entries were not able to meet the strict requirements and standards set by the judging panel. The submissions were judged anonymously within a pre-established set of criteria. Judges for Asian Packaging Excellence Awards this year are print veterans: Willem (Wim) Swiggers, Phee Boon Eow and Ben Kwok. SHIFT_019 Wraps Up The first Asian Packaging Conference to be held in Delhi, India, concludes. The conference theme for this year was: “Investing for Sustainability & Financial Returns. The theme aimed to address two of the most pressing issues faced by packaging printers today: sustainability and return on investments. The local and international speakers consisted of

technical specialists, marketing experts, consultants, end-users and suppliers. The conference attracted well over 350 business owners and suppliers, packaging printers, converters, brand owners and designers. According to organisers, 60% of the delegates were from India, while the rest arrived from around the region.

Next year’s event, which will also be the 18th edition, is expected to take place in Ho Chi Minh Vietnam in the month of August.

Japanese-Indonesian company Ohtomi purchases first MPS flexo press Based in Indonesia, Ohtomi adds a flexo press to its letterpress machine park spare parts, remote support, as well as local expert engineer service from their regional office in Kuala Lumpur. We also have a good relationship with Ahmad Sopian, the local MPS agent in Indonesia.” Ohtomi plans to purchase at least one additional MPS press within a year, and more in the future. Operator Training

A ten-colour, EF 430 multi-substrate flexo press with the APC (Automated Print Control) package was purchased and installed by Indonesian printer Ohtomi, and marks their first MPS investment and fourth flexo press. Previously as an exclusive user of letterpress technology, Ohtomi made the initial switch to flexo ten years ago. Hiroyoshi Oshima, marketing director at Ohtomi explained why: “In our manufacturing facility, we have 25 letterpress machines, running production of 50-60% of the total print jobs. We embraced flexo as a better alternative for longer print runs.” Advantages of flexo compared to letterpress For Ohtomi, flexo was proven as the more favourable solution for their press operators, as flexo presses are less complicated to operate versus letterpress machines. Oshima said: “Automation and pressure control

has improved considerably in flexo. Nowadays, flexo offers offset quality, which is a great advantage combined with higher productivity compared to letterpress.” The biggest advantage of letterpress, according to Oshima, is fine-tuning of colours and images. When demand for an additional new flexo press developed, Ohtomi was open for consideration between the leading flexo press manufacturers. Keeping in mind that presses are difficult to maintain due to high temperatures in Southeast Asia, important to Ohtomi was a manufacturer with a solid and local service infrastructure. “Service was one of the main reasons we chose MPS, next to their proven reputation of offering the highest print quality and productivity,” said Oshima. “The MPS service organization is very organized and customer-focused, with their offering the Red Box with

During the Factory Acceptance Test in November 2018 at MPS headquarters in the Netherlands, two Ohtomi press operators received extensive flexo training in machine operation, maintenance and troubleshooting, to assure maximum results from their new MPS flexo press. Both operators successfully completed the training program and are now certified MPS flexo operators. Ohtomi is a family business founded in 1971. The company began its origin when Hiroyoshi Oshima’s grandfather started a trading company between Japan and Indonesia in the 1930’s, before World War II. The trading company was the first to bring label presses to Indonesia. Responding to a growing demand for labels, Oshima’s father began printing labels himself, resulting in the Ohtomi label printing business. Today, Ohtomi is a flourishing company with three locations. The main factory is located in Jakarta, Indonesia and employs around 200 people. In October 2017, a small second printshop was opened in Surabaya, and Ohtomi is also a shared owner of a printing company in Vietnam and Thailand.

Digital printing solution for pouches Xeikon announces its digital printing solution for pouches. This latest innovation has been developed for consumer goods markets – food, beverage, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The digital process for printing on pouches responds to current trends, i.e. significant numbers of SKU’s, shorter lead times, and the rising popularity of pouches in store. Brand owners looking for shelf impact for their products are drawn to flexible pouches for their ability to stand, their light weight and their sustainability. Xeikon has simplified a key part of the overall production process to provide a fast turnaround solution. Filip Weymans, Xeikon’s Vice President Marketing, states: “This is a prime example of what we call "customer driven innovation”. By focusing on this application, we are supporting our customers’ requirements and also responding to the current trends in consumer preference. This development takes our digital production portfolio to the next level. With its technological expertise, Xeikon is ideally positioned to provide innovative digital processes.” Pouches can be reasonably complex to manufacture because of the flexible nature of their multi-layers. It is essentially a laminated bag made from several layers of material that requires a number of different steps in production. Xeikon is helping to simplify the overall process to provide a fast turnaround solution. By firstly digitally printing the text and graphics on a thermal laminate, the outside layer of the pouch is prepared and ready for the next steps. A variety of different

layers is then constructed by lamination with a series of barriers for protection before the pouch is finally put together in the manufacturing process. Xeikon’s digital printing solution offers the lowest possible complexity and the broadest lamination construction possible. Marketers and brand owners see a lot of value in this kind of packaging for a variety of reasons, such as product presentation and functionality for the consumer. Pouches can also be sustainable: a pouch has a so-called "product-to-package" ratio of 35:1, which essentially means that it can carry up to 35 times its own weight, resulting in less energy consumption to produce and to transport. Pouches can have a variety of different shapes depending on size, end-use application and functionality. Many brands are transitioning from rigid types of packaging to more flexible versions such as pouches. Digital printing with Xeikon’s dry toner technology has many advantages. It is not only the highest print quality on flexible substrates but there are also reductions in start-up costs and no job changeover costs. Importantly, the printer has the ability to print variable

data information in both single and full colour. Xeikon’s digital dry toner technology allows JIT production, versioning and last minute adaptations on the fly. For busy print operations with a high volume and complex jobs looking to assess which process and technologies will give them an advantage, the crossover point for flexo and the digital process is at least 4000lm. Weymans concludes, “Xeikon continues to develop new innovations for diverse markets to meet today’s challenging and fast moving world of consumerism. With our broad technology portfolio, we are in a perfect position to respond to current market trends and develop any solution required. Our digital printing solution for pouches utilizes our dry toner technology, which comes with a guarantee for food safety. This technology also ensures consistency and an equal finish to offset (am screen) and to flexo when colour matching is required. With our aXelerate programme, our dedicated teams provide direct and personal training and support for our customers every step of the way. Xeikon is committed to providing only the very best products and services.”

Memjet’s DuraLink Printhead Technology brings inkjet’s benefits to packaging DuraLink provides a cost-effective digital alternative to the traditional analog processes by enabling printers to produce high-quality graphics on low-quality stocks.

Today’s packaging providers are operating in an industry that is changing before their eyes. At one time, analog printing was the rule in packaging printing. But today, as demand for speed, customization, and short runs increases, more and more packaging is being produced digitally. To keep pace with this change, Memjet developed its second-generation inkjet printing technology platform, DuraLink. “Memjet set out to develop an inkjet technology platform that would bring quality, speed, and affordability to highvolume markets like packaging,” says Bent Serritslev, senior vice president of business development in the Asia– Pacific region (APAC) at Memjet. “The result of this effort is DuraLink. This new technology combines a long-life printhead, durable aqueous pigment inks, 100 in maximum print width, and a range of versatile modules. Together, these features enable the rapid, cost-effective development of next-generation solutions that create the type of packaging the market demands.” Redundancy at the Nozzle Level At the heart of DuraLink is a new longlife printhead. Unlike most printheads on the market today, DuraLink’s printhead integrates redundancy at the nozzle level. DuraLink has 5x nozzle redundancy across 70,400 nozzles, which is enhanced by DuraLink’s

aqueous pigment inks that are optimized for long life and reliability. With five nozzles printing each pixel, if one jet goes out, it will go virtually unnoticed in the printed image. The 5x nozzle-level redundancy also means the printhead does not need to be replaced as often. These long-life printheads require less maintenance than other printheads and enable longer print runs. Moreover, printing companies no longer need to take on the cost and complexity of adding more print bars or implementing costly image-quality monitoring systems. “Businesses report that a key benefit of inkjet has been the way it greatly simplifies the print production process

while still achieving the level of quality their customers demand,” Serritslev explains. “DuraLink brings those benefits to markets like packaging that require high volume printing, making the production of these jobs faster, less expensive, and easier than had been previously possible.” Stability and Flexibility for the Packaging Market The DuraLink printing system is composed of modules that act as building blocks. The standardizedmodule designs provide both architectural system stability and design flexibility, enabling OEMs to rapidly design and create custom press solutions that meet the specific challenges of package production.

OEM partners can build customized presses that offer print widths from 220mm to 2500mm, speeds up to 203m/min, one to eight colors simplex or duplex, and offset-like print quality up to 1600 x 1585 dpi. This level of customization means that DuraLink-powered presses can be built to accommodate finishing equipment currently being used in the packaging production process. In addition to flexibility, DuraLink has a lower printhead cost than competing printhead technologies. The lower cost, in combination with the flexible modules, allows OEM partners to affordably build customized inkjet solutions designed to meet the needs of their specific markets. DuraLink Speeds by Resolution (Europe version)

Industry-Leading Speed and Quality Together, the features of DuraLink provide industry-leading quality and speed to a range of commercial, packaging, and industrial printing markets. DuraLink Speeds by Resolution With this level of quality and durability, DuraLink’s pigment-based printing platform is an alternative to other more expensive and time-consuming digital and analog processes. Using DuraLink, OEM providers can create solutions that produce high-quality graphics on low-quality stocks like uncoated liners for corrugated board. Moreover, the ability to use up to 8 colors means printers can accurately reproduce brand colors on corrugated stocks.

The Future of Print Although there is growth in all areas of digital printing, the most dynamic area for change will be in the field of packaging. “There are new opportunities being created in the packaging industry today,” says Serritslev, “but to capture these opportunities, printers will need affordable solutions that enable them to economically produce the customized, quality packaging their customers demand in volumes that are right for their businesses. With the release of DuraLink, Memjet ensures that printers will have the resources they need to capture the opportunities of today and well into the future.”

Advanced drying and web-handling Contiweb, a specialist in state-of-the-art technologies for printing, advanced drying and web-handling, today announces that global installations of its silicone-saving Contiweb Fluid Applicator (CFA) now number well over fifty since its commercial launch in 2015. Developed to overcome the high prices associated with ready-made silicone mixtures, the CFA uses a cost-effective pure silicone oil mixture. Comprising large drops of oil, which are slowly absorbed by the paper, this solution remains on the surface for longer compared to the fine droplets produced by a pre-mixed silicone emulsion. This means that less oil is required to achieve good lubrication, reducing operational costs. Cutting Silicone Costs by 60% The 50th CFA unit was purchased by Mohn Media Mohndruck GmbH, Europe’s leading print and media service provider, specialising in premium books and magazines along with engaging brochures and direct mail applications. Based in Gütersloh. Germany, the company run 23 16-96-page web offset presses, producing over 500,000 tonnes of printed material per annum. According to Jens Klingebiel, Head of Technology Department, Mohn Media, the company originally invested in the CFA to reduce its soaring silicone costs. He explains: “Silicone is vital to our print line. It is deployed as a lubricant and used to remoisten the paper. As Europe’s leading print provider, you can imagine the sheer volume of silicone required to maintain our productivity. “Since installing the CFA we have slashed our silicone costs by 60 percent! From a business perspective, its quick and seamless integration into our existing workflow ensures that we can maintain our uptime and

importantly, maximise the productivity of consistently high-quality projects. “Our belief in the CFA and in Contiweb is such that we have installed 14 systems across our facility,” he adds. Rutger Jansen, CEO at Contiweb, concludes: “This landmark investment is a testament to Contiweb’s ethos of providing customers with businessenhancing solutions. Originally designed as an upgrade for the Ecocool and Ecoset dryers, the CFA is now also available as standalone system for customers with other dryers. It

combines both the silicone application and remoistening of the substrate in one. This allows companies, like Mohn Media to unlock huge cost savings. “Mohn Media was in fact, the very first company to install the CFA and is a prime example of how companies can enjoy the cost saving potential of this solution. We are delighted that the company continues to reap the rewards of our solution as it continues to expand its customer database. We are privileged to work with them.”

Successful transition from Letterpress to Flexo SCREEN Graphic Solutions Co., Ltd. (SCREEN GA) has finalised development of a new blue ink intended for use in its high-end Truepress Jet L350UV+ digital label printing system. The ink will be released worldwide in June. In recent years, the growing awareness of corporate and product brand image has led to a continuous increase in demand for higher quality product labelling and packaging. At the same time, there has been a growing need for the ability to use the blue colours often required for corporate designs and product packaging with digital label presses to provide greater flexibility and impact. In response to these trends, SCREEN GA has developed ‘Truepress ink for L350UV Blue’. This new blue ink is designed for use with the company’s Truepress Jet L350UV+ system, a highend UV inkjet label printing model that also offers features including industryleading print speeds of up to 60 metres per minute, wide media compatibility and outstanding operability. SCREEN GA’s exclusive expertise has enabled it to successfully extend the blue colour gamut to its maximum potential. The system’s ability to handle blue ink in addition to conventional CMYK and white inks allows it to faithfully reproduce blue colours in corporate designs that were previously difficult using process colours alone. It is also able to precisely output a wide range of blue tones frequently used on the packaging of items such as cosmetics, toiletries and body care products. These expressive capabilities help to improve

brand image and create products that truly stand out from competitor items in the marketplace. Screen Europe will be showing the Truepress Jet L350UV+ with the new blue ink at the inaugural LabelFest Open House event at its Amstelveen showroom in the Netherlands on 15th & 16th May 2019. Partners joining Screen at the event include CERM, Hybrid Software, Avery Dennison, Rotocon Europe, SEI Laser, CGS and Kurz. Carlo Sammarco, Screen Sales Director Packaging Solutions EMEA, said; “Visitors to LabelFest will be able to see a fully integrated digital label production system in operation and will have the opportunity to discuss their requirements with members of the Screen team and with our partner vendors.” SCREEN GA intends to continue its efforts to provide solutions to the

diverse market needs connected to label printing. It will also continue to promote the creation of new applications and business models as it works to support the expansion of the label and packaging industry.

We are ready for b An exclusive interview with Dr. Peter Conrady, the new President of Manroland Greater China and Head of Sales at Manroland Sheetfed GmbH. Article by Ms. Wang Tingting from Chinese Print Magazine ‘Printing Technology’.

are afoot. During the Manroland Innovative Added Value Printing of Alcohol Packaging Seminar and the Press Conference, it was a privilege to meet Dr. Peter Conrady face to face and find out the reason for this management change and the latest developments at Manroland. Strong commitment to the Chinese printing industry

The new president of Manroland Greater China is a veteran of the industry who has immersed himself in the business. Dr. Peter Conrady, who joined Manroland in 1995, was formerly Managing Director of Manroland Germany and Austria for many years. Since 2012, he has been Head of Sales of Manroland Sheetfed GmbH and has deep knowledge of the global printing industry and the Chinese printing market. Any change of management sparks curiosity on what policy changes

Manroland Greater China achieved great business success in 2018. The new-generation flagship model ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION enjoyed success in the high-end customized packaging printing field; the preventive maintenance concept of ProServ 360 ° was embraced by the customers; and the Printing Supplies division helped more customers to establish sustainable green printing production that meets regulatory requirements. “In 2018, Manroland successfully positioned itself at the high-end packaging printing market and its sales performance hit the target,” Dr. Conrady said. At the same time, Manroland's single largest market, China, was facing changes in the economic environment,

with new competition emerging along with unprecedented opportunities for development. Only by evolving and adapting to the times could Manroland achieve further growth in the Chinese market. In early 2019, Manroland's headquarters in Germany restructured their China operation by appointing Dr. Conrady president. Dr. Conrady believes that his appointment can directly bring resources and support from the headquarters to further boost the business development of manroland Greater China. This is undoubtedly great news to the Chinese market. It manifests Manroland's strong commitment to the Chinese printing industry helping Chinese printers to transform and upgrade themselves. Best packaging printing solution As a world-famous sheetfed offset press builder, backed by a long history and track record of success, Manroland Sheetfed has a legendary status in the design and manufacturing of topof-the-line printing equipment. In order to meet the market demands for higher automation and higher

better service

productivity, Manroland in November 2014 launched a new generation “Dream Model” the ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION. This model continues Manroland's proud tradition of solid press manufacturing while adopting the most innovative technology. With its new design concept and futuristic look, ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION won the 2015 Red Dot Design Award, considered as the “Oscars” in the design industry. Its broad range of options – such as SPL (simultaneous plate loading), AUPASYS (Automatic pallet transport system), and InlineInspector + InlineSorter which aims at the “zero defect sheet pile” – has won plenty of recognition. That’s because they can help printers to continuously improve productivity, service capabilities and customer satisfaction. According to Dr. Conrady, the ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION has performed very well since its launch. By now, it has seen its 1,000th printing unit come off the production line – proof that this model is an ideal value-

added printing tool. This, of course, is an important milestone in Manroland's development history. Moreover, in response to the everchanging printing market, Manroland launched a tailor-made model the ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION ULTIMA. “We hope to develop different applications through an advanced platform to meet the various needs of our customers,” explained Dr. Conrady. “Compared with the standard models, Ultima can be flexibly configured for printing, coating and drying, according to the product characteristics and production needs of the printers. What’s more, the coating unit can sit anywhere on the press. Through a combination of different options, a wide variety of print effects could be done through one-pass production. With Ultima, the printers could easily handle various challenges, such as higher quality requirements, increased complexity, shorter runs or reduced lead time. Therefore, it brings to the printers unlimited possibilities

for profitability,” Dr. Conrady stressed. At present, in China, prestigious printers, such as ZRP Printing & Packaging, Kunshan Kava, and YUTO, have acquired Ultima presses. Furthermore, according to sales statistics from Manroland Greater China in 2018, for every five presses sold, one was Ultima – proof that this model is a favorite among the printers. As for the changes in the printing equipment market in recent years, Dr. Conrady observed that the most obvious change is that printers are paying more attention to the machine’s stability and productivity, cost, print quality and environmental protection. The demand for the seven-color units or higher, automation, color management systems and special processes, such as InlineFoiler, double coating and LED UV, is rising.

“The ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION and the Ultima model were developed based on these needs,” Dr. Conrady said. “The feedback from our customers confirms that this model is very successful. It also strengthens our decision to develop in this direction.” Full range of services makes Manroland a bigger success "Manroland not only sells machines, but also pays attention to services, helping customers to not only afford the equipment, but also use it well." As a total solution provider, Dr. Conrady said, Manroland has not only been developing innovative technologies and value-added printing processes, but also offering customers a full range of services, including printservices and printcom. ProServ 360° PERFORMANCE was developed in accordance with this philosophy. According to Dr. Conrady, in addition to traditional installation, repair, training and spare parts, the biggest innovation of this solution is to provide the customers with preventive maintenance and performance improvement programs. The aim is to continuously improve the effective utilization rate of equipment

and increase its stability. Thus, the printers are able to provide their customers with high-quality packaging print products and services. Currently, the ProServ360° PERFORMANCE is integrated with the new ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION and is free of charge for the first two years. Also worthy of mention is the TOP Performance, which translates into: Performance (P) = Technology (T) x Organization (O) x People (P). According to the different working conditions and usage status of the printing machine, the production data report of each printing machine – including information on equipment, job, personnel and efficiency – can be regularly generated. The printers can carefully analyze productivity and identify plans to increase production efficiency according to the specified key performance indicators. “The ultimate goal of these services is to ensure the maximum production performance of the press,” Dr. Conrady said. Manroland has been in China for nearly 100 years, from the time it started business in 1921 to now. It has fulfilled its strong commitment to the Chinese printing industry. In the future, the burden on Dr. Conrady’s shoulders will

be even heavier. He said that he was very much looking forward to his new role. “Manroland has enough good products and services to cope with the ever-changing challenges of the Chinese market and industry,” he said. “I, together with my colleagues from Manroland Greater China, will serve our Chinese customers well, get more resources from the headquarters to the Chinese market, and at the same time update our headquarters in Germany of the changes in the Chinese market." Not all presses are made equal, not all presses are Manroland! A new challenge has begun. Let’s look forward to the outstanding performance of Dr. Conrady and Manroland Greater China!

Successful transition from Letterpress to Flexo Asahi AWP™-DEF water-washable plates deliver exceptional quality and stability Asahi Photoproducts, a pioneer in flexographic photopolymer plate development, today reported that Chinese label manufacturer Shanghai Hengze Printing Company has adopted Asahi AWP™-DEF water-washable plates with Clean Transfer Technology to boost quality and improve its competitive positioning. The company also uses Asahi’s AWP-2530 AA plate processor to ensure the utmost in quality and stability of its plates. The company was founded in 2001 as a letterpress shop producing labels for products in daily use among the Chinese population. Hengze has an annual output of 75 million yuan (11.1 million dollars) and 48 employees who are dedicated to delivering excellence for the company’s customers. Shanghai Hengze offers complete end-to-end services under one roof, from product design and prepress to the finished product, enabling a high level of customization and personalized service for its customers. Shanghai Hengze was looking for a solution to improve its overall quality. Mr. Li Xiaocheng, founder of Hengze, said, “With letterpress, the limitation of printing equipment structure and the ink transfer process result in a difference in color from start to finish of the run. With the Asahi AWP™DEF flexographic process plates, we do not experience this phenomenon and our overall quality has been greatly improved.” “We introduced flexographic printing to our business in 2013,” Mr. Li added. “We conducted extensive research into the best flexographic plate solution with assistance from Professor Yin Jinhua, an expert in the industry, with multiple tests using solvent-based and water-washable plates from a variety of manufacturers. The final result was our

From left to right: Mr. Li Xiaocheng, Founder of Hengze. Now part of the management advisory board. Father of President Li Yong. Mr. Yuji Suzuki, Head of the Technical Training Center at Asahi Photoproducts in China with the new ALL-IN-ONE AWP™-2530 AA flexographic processor designed to meet demand for the highest quality from today’s discerning customers. choice of Asahi AWP™-DEF water washable plates with Clean Transfer Technology, and the performance of these plates in practice has validated that we made the right choice.” Clean Transfer Technology plates from Asahi Photoproducts such as its AWP™-DEF plates have been specifically engineered to transfer all remaining ink to the printed substrate. This is due to the plate’s lower surface energy. Clean Transfer Technology plates do not need to be cleaned as often as conventional digital solvent plates. Reduction of plate cleaning stops creates a significant productivity improvement as well as more consistent quality. Shanghai Hengze cites five primary reasons for selecting Asahi AWP™DEF plates:

These plates deliver a much smaller dot gain than the solvent-based plates that were tested. Because solvent does not completely evaporate from plates during processing, a certain amount of dot deformation results. The surface tension of the AWP™DEF plate is more closely matched to the UV inks Hengze is using, meaning that the optimum amount of ink being transferred to the substrate is achieved more quickly than with solvent-based plates, resulting in faster time to market and less waste. AWP™-DEF print quality is better than the two other washable versions tested. The other washable plates use polymer rubber, which cannot deliver the fine dots Hengze’s quality work demands.

Printing Innovation Asia Issue 4 2019

37 The AWP™-DEF plate has a high surface flatness and minimal deformation during printing, making it easier for the press operator to maintain high quality throughout the run. AWP™-DEF plates can reduce gear mark, and have obvious advantages when compared with the other plates tested. Hengze chose to use the Asahi AWP™-2530 AA plate processor since its analysis showed that it offers superior performance when compared to domestic alternatives. The processor also includes a dryer, exposure and post exposure unit that is stable with a low error rate. It does a good job of washing out the plate, resulting in steep printing dot shoulders. The analysis also found that the AWP™-2530 AA plate processor consistently delivered plates with a uniform thickness. “All of these characteristics add to the overall quality of the combined solution,” Mr. Li concluded. About Shanghai Hengze Printing Company Shanghai Hengze Printing Co., Ltd.

was established in 2001 and specializes in the production of various types of labels. It has its own design and platemaking competency and uses various printing and finishing methods such as letterpress printing, flexo printing, silk screen printing and digital printing, a production portfolio that includes the world's leading prepress and print production equipment. Innovation Digital Lacquer Embossing The look and feel of surfaces can now be created completely digitally with this technology.

Printing Innovation Asia Issue 4 2019

45

The production of digitally printed materials is becoming increasingly popular – in the flooring, furniture or building materials sectors and more. Customers expect the look and feel of surfaces to match. There is a wide variety of processes to meet customer expectations today. But all the established processes have one thing in common: Unlike print processes, they are analogue and not digital. Hymmen has developed and patented a solution for this dilemma: Digital Lacquer Embossing. The growing importance of digital decor print Especially for floor coverings, an authentic design in terms of its look and feel has become very important. The surface texture is typically created using press plates or textured cylinders. Digitally printed décors, on the other hand, are becoming ever more popular. A dilemma ensues when the analogue texturing process can no longer keep up with the versatility of digital technology. A look at known production quantities helps to clarify the significance of digital printing today – especially in the flooring sector. The Hymmen Jupiter digital printing lines alone currently produce over 40 million square metres – and the trend is rising. More and more manufacturers are turning to the benefits of industrial scale digital printing processes. Shorter setup times, less storage costs, new design options, customized mass production, integration of the digital printing process in the process chain of the décor industry and the industrial production of small output quantities per design are just some of these advantages. „We are convinced that digitally textured printing has an enormous market potential“, remarks Dr. René Pankoke, Managing Partner

Dr. René Pankoke, Managing partner and CEO of Hymmen

and CEO at Hymmen, the market leader in industrial digital printing for the wood-based products industry. That is why the machine engineering specialist has developed an industrially viable process for digital texturing. Requirement for the industrial viability of DLE „We can look back on extensive experience in the area of digital décor printing“, comments Pankoke, on the starting point for the new development. „On the other hand, our know-how in liquid coating processes had taught us that customers have very high expectations in terms of textured

surfaces. New technologies don‘t stand a chance to replace established processes if these expectations cannot be met.“ Our initial approach, which entailed a digitally applied, positive texture, had to be abandoned as it didn‘t offer the necessary wear resistance. „The key requirements for digital texturing to be suitable for industrial use became evident in the many trials conducted at our technical research laboratory in Rödinghausen and in many meetings and discussions with users“,

Printing Innovation Asia Issue 4 2019

46 Choosing the digital process for décor prints on LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tiles) or modular multi-layer flooring will not only ensure exceptional quality, but also significant cost savings: The traditional process in the production of LVT entails the extrusion of substrate panels, their lamination with a printed design layer and an additional transparent layer as wear protection.

Hymmen Jupiter digital printing lines René Pankoke says in summary of the findings of the development process. These are the following characteristics: • A structural depth of 10–90 µm • The surface quality must be maintained • to match the printed design. This may vary depending on the product (furniture, flooring, etc.) • Various gloss levels • The creation of an underlying structure just like real wood, and not just a positive, layered texture • The possibility to integrate the technology in an existing, conventional coating line The innovation: Hymmen Digital Lacquer Embossing After many laboratory trials, Hymmen applied for several patents, which since have been granted. Digital Lacquer Embossing was introduced to the public for the first time at Inprint 2016. It answers the clear customer need for surfaces with a matching look and feel, with an absolutely natural appearance. In this innovative technology, a transparent medium is printed into a layer of uncured, conventional lacquer. That is done with the help of the established technology of Hymmen Jupiter digital printing lines. Physical and chemical reactions create the deep and unique texture of the product. DLE utilises all the commercial and technical advantages of established digital single pass printing by Hymmen. This includes characteristics like high flexibility, fast setup times, no storage costs, new design options and customisation, while eliminating the need for cylinder or press plate changes.

At a width of 70 mm to max. 2,100 mm and with only one digital printing beam, this technology can easily be integrated in existing processes. As only a small amount of the medium creating the texture is used, the established features of the lacquer, such as rigidity, adhesion, scratch-resistance and chemical resistance, remain intact. The end result are textures that precisely match the surface design – regardless of whether the design is an analogue or digital print. Hymmen installed a complete trial production line at the technical laboratory in Rödinghausen to provide the required capacity for upcoming customer trials. Digital Lacquer Embossing also offers an entirely new additional benefit for surface finishes: An authentic surface look and feel can now be achieved with the universal use of Hymmen industrial digital printing – including all the commercial and technical advantages. Modern digital production for modern flooring Hymmen‘s decorative digital printing has proven its value for modular multilayer floorings (MMF) in real-life operations. Firstly, the reliable adhesion of the inks on the substrates has been proven. Secondly, single pass printing of the most difficult flooring designs, such as stone décors with close to single colour areas, has been achieved in exceptional digital quality. Hymmen developed its ACC (Automatic Color Calibration) software for that purpose: a specially developed scanner technology records the printed design, and analyses and corrects the most minute deviations and irregularities.

The purchase of décor foils and the wear-resistant layer in the form of thermoplastic foils means high material consumption and therefore higher production costs. The digitally printed LVT, on the other hand, only needs a primer coat, the digital décor print and a wear-resistant top coat for the same surface quality. Using lacquers and digital printing processes instead of thermoplastic foils can yield between around 20–30% cost savings. Excimer technology for modular multi-layer flooring An Excimer system is the final element of a complete manufacturing line for modular multi-layer flooring, producing a wide variety of matt and gloss levels on a surface. The irradiation of surface coatings with a short-wave Excimer leads to the polymerisation (curing) of only the top layer of the lacquer. A thin, hardened film forms on the surface. As this film is subject to some shrinking, the film closest to the surface will display some micro-wrinkling, which creates the matt surface effect. Without any matting agent, the achievable gloss level lies between 2–30 gloss points (measuring angle of 60°) depending on parameters and coating. When you're one of the best car racing teams in the world You need the very best graphics. That's why Renault F1® Team has chosen Roland DG’s new TrueVIS VG2, the second-generation ecosolvent print-and-cut device, to produce its race-leading Grand Prix prints. Renault F1® Team has relied on Roland TrueVIS for many years, using the reliable and high-quality systems at its Technical Centre in Enstone, Oxfordshire, to produce stickers for its racing cars, livery for its support vehicles, displays for its hospitality areas, and much more. Grand Prix events can attract worldwide audiences of more than 400 million viewers, and sponsorship is as competitive as the races themselves. High-end sponsors demand the highest precision in their brand colours and immediate replacement of any damaged advertising graphics; Renault F1® Team always travels with 30 identical versions of every sticker, totalling around 1,400 stickers for every race. Roland has now upgraded the awardwinning TrueVIS VG Series with over 40 incredible enhancements, allowing Renault F1® Team to push its boundaries for accuracy, reliability and turnaround speeds even further. Those who have seen the VG2 in action describe it as both ‘best printer/ cutter’ and ‘best print device in the industry today’. Designed to meet and exceed the needs of today's most demanding print professionals, and already proving incredibly popular,

the Roland TrueVIS VG2 is set to attract significant attention at the forthcoming FESPA Global Print Expo 2019 in Munich (14 to 17 May, Hall A5, Booth H10). Joe McNamara, Head of Paint and Graphics at Renault F1® Team, has praised the extended colour gamut, now with bold Orange for vibrant colours, natural skin tones and exceptional colour replication. "One of the first things we noticed was the improvement in the colour matching, because a lot of what we do covers an entire season," he comments. "It gives us a good opportunity to have a consistent colour." He adds: "It also comes with the new orange swatch which has about a hundred colours in there – yellows and oranges. It really makes our life easy when it comes to matching colours exactly for our corporate sponsors, and also for our own branding on cars, on garages, and on everything we take to races with us." Memjet announces the appointment of Bent Serritslev as senior vice president of business development in the Asia Pacific region (APAC). In this role, Serritslev will oversee sales and marketing activities designed to expand the adoption of Memjet technology among OEM partners in the region. “The appointment of Bent Serritslev continues Memjet’s momentum in the Asia–Pacific market,” said Len Lauer, chief executive officer at Memjet. “Last year, at the All in Print China Conference, Memjet announced DuraLink partnerships with Shanghai UPG International Trading Co. Ltd (UP Group) and Liaoning Zheng Hong Basch (Basch). This year, with Bent as part of our team, we will be announcing more OEM partners in the region and expand the number of Memjetpowered printing solutions that bring the speed, quality and affordability needed to succeed in the competitive APAC market.” Before joining Memjet, Serritslev held senior management roles in the printing industry.

53 More recently, he was managing director for Xeikon Asia Pacific, where he established and grew Xeikon’s market share in region. Under his leadership, Xeikon’s office grew from a small core group of engineers to a thriving organization of about 30 people dedicated to providing sales, marketing, service and support for regional Asia Pacific customers. Prior to Xeikon, Serritslev was managing director of Heidelberg Malaysia and Singapore. “In my career, I have witnessed the evolution of the printing industry and the expansion and dynamics of the APAC market,” said Serritslev. “No matter how the market changes, one thing remains the same: the enduring power of strong customer relationships. At Memjet, I look forward to establishing connections and fostering productive working relationships that enable OEM partners to grow today and well into the future.” Heidelberg’s planned takeover of MBO blocked by German Federal Cartel Office The German Federal Cartel Office announced its decision to block the planned takeover of the MBO Group by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). Due to this decision, the takeover will not go ahead. “We take note of the decision with regret and moving on, even though we see the future market position of the combined company's differently,” commented Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer. The two companies remain convinced that integrating the offerings of MBO would have given customers added benefits in terms of smooth industrial processes in the digital future. Following the ruling, both companies will continue to run their businesses separately and independently as before. Heidelberg publicly announced its intention to take over the MBO Group and concluded an agreement with the owning family back in October 2018. This agreement was then submitted to the Federal Cartel Office for approval

and had been under review since that time. Heidelberg postpress strategy remains unchanged Even though the takeover of the MBO Group is not going ahead, Heidelberg will continue to pursue its strategy of further developing its postpress portfolio in the direction of industrial-scale postpress operations. This includes the extremely successful positioning of the Stahlfolder TH / KH series folding machines, especially the patented high-performance P-class. Heidelberg is also investing in a new way of improving transparency in postpress production control for all products. In parallel to this, the company is systematically aligning new business models with the growth segments of digital and packaging and tapping into new customer groups for its entire product range. This applies in particular to the segments of digital postpress and postpress for folding cartons and the associated inserts and outserts used in the pharmaceutical sector. It is also underlined by the company’s collaboration with the Chinese postpress specialist Masterwork Group, which was expanded with a capital measure in March and is designed to open up further potential on the growing packaging market. Lintec has introduced a new superstrength labelstock, ‘UH5070’, which includes a highly aggressive adhesive enabling placement on challenging surfaces. The polyester labelstock is targeted at professionals that require labels for high-end applications and industrial components. UH5070 features exceptional adhesive properties when compared to conventional labelstocks. It provides superior adhesion to rough and textured surfaces, making it the ideal solution for information and identification labels used on consumer devices and industrial components. It also offers high adhesive-to-adhesive strength, allowing customers to use the labelstock on applications such as loop tag labels. Soichiro Fujinaga, Technical Manager of LINTEC comments: “There are a wide variety of surfaces – such as textured, low energy, foamed and talc-filled plastics, as well as powder coated or galvanised metals – that can cause issues with the performance of conventional adhesives.” “The labelstock that we are introducing to market provides excellent adhesion to these challenging surfaces. Not only does it deliver superior durability, it also converts cleanly and with minimal to no adhesive secretion ooze on press or during end-user processes, such as thermal transfer printing.”

Printing Innovation Asia Issue 4 2019

54 He concludes: “When our customers face difficult application surfaces, we deliver a solution that is fit for purpose. Businesses need their labels to be durable and adhere quickly and easily, while also remaining in position for the entire production life cycle. UH5070 delivers on all of those fronts.

Tarsus and APTech announce strategic alliance and combined event Tarsus Group (owner and organizer of the Labelexpo and Brand Print Global Series of trade shows) and the Association for PRINT Technologies (owner and organizer of the PRINT® event) have today announced that they will combine efforts to launch Brand Print Americas. This will take place in lieu of PRINT® 2020 and will be co-located with the 2020 edition of Labelexpo Americas, happening at the Donald E Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL, from September 15-17. Tarsus Group, a global leader in the labels and package printing space, and the Association for PRINT Technologies, a leader in the commercial print industry, are uniting decades of expertise and knowledge of the whole print market by merging PRINT® 2020 into Brand Print Americas and co-locating it with Labelexpo Americas 2020. Brand Print Americas will offer printers, converters and brand owners access to solutions for their varied printing needs. Research demonstrates that there is a growing diversification in the print industry. Brands that have labels and packaging requirements also need to source printed materials to meet their other marketing needs, including, point of purchase, collation packs, outdoor advertising, fleet graphics, direct mail and much more. These two events bring together the whole supply chain under one roof, and therefore provide greater synergies and opportunities for printers, converters, manufacturers, suppliers, and creatives.

Lisa Milburn, managing director for Labelexpo Global Series and Brand Print, said: “We are delighted to collaborate with the Association for PRINT Technologies on the first Brand Print Americas. By combining efforts where we see crossover among segments, we are strategically connecting the print supply chain. This will give printers and converters access to a huge platform for exploring all of their print needs and finding the right solutions at a single venue.” Thayer Long, president of APTech, said: “We are thrilled to merge PRINT 2020 into this new event and partner with Tarsus and Labelexpo on Brand Print Americas. This is a strategic response to the market as printers look to diversify their offerings and manufacturers want to maximize their marketing dollars by bringing audiences together under one roof. We are taking a collaborative approach to bring together two well-known brands, two unique audiences, and multiple market segments together.” Milburn added: “Brand Print Americas joins our newest global portfolio of events for the branded printing sector, and is a natural extension of our hugely successful Labelexpo Global Series for the labels and package printing industry.” Launch of the digital platform “Label Experts” – the new knowledge portal for label printing • Free access to broad expertise • Interesting blend of technical articles, white papers and tips at https://label-experts.com Labels give products their unique identity and influence the impulse to

buy at the point of sale. Accounting for around five percent of the global print volume of approximately EUR 400 billion, today the label market has the greatest growth potential in the printing industry, and has evolved from a niche segment to a sizable industry over the last few decades. The associated knowledge base has also greatly increased hand in hand with this evolution, and today is differentiated on the basis of a remarkable variety of different printing technologies, applications, substrates and further consumables. In the digital age it was just a matter of time before the stakeholders in this industry, in other words users, manufacturers, associations and market research institutes, bundled this knowledge and made it available on a digital platform. With immediate effect, the new knowledge portal in English for all things label printing can be found at https://label-experts. com. This expert forum was started as a joint project between Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) and its subsidiary Gallus. “Heidelberg’s strength lies in its knowledge of its customers and their issues,” explains Professor Dr. Ulrich Hermann, Member of the Management Board responsible for Lifecycle Solutions and Chief Digital Officer at Heidelberg. “This is where our future customer communication begins, not just with the product. Our customers in the label printing industry will be able to access exclusive expert knowledge with this platform presence. Only if we are able to prove to our customers that we understand the label printing industry, will our customers continue to place their trust in us for their most important investment decisions.”

Event attracted close to 1.000 visitors over the 3 days Xeikon Café Europe 2019 (www. xeikoncafe.com) once again proves to be a leading event in the packaging industry’s calendar. With a creatively crafted conference programme providing a 360° view of the trends, challenges and solutions for today’s packaging industry and an applicationdriven technical Academy, this multivendor, educational and networking event attracted close to 1.000 visitors over the 3 days – this included over 500 label and packaging converters attending from over 55 countries.

Mertens of Xeikon Café. “We are dedicated to sharing our knowledge and expertise in packaging innovation and digital production, and each year we plan ahead to evolve and improve the visitor experience. For 2019 we further streamlined our Conference and Academy programmes inviting speakers that provide ‘spot on’ and challenging insights, intellectual entertainment and food for thought. This year a key discussion addressed the significant changes in consumer behaviour and communication that are impacting brand packaging and subsequently packaging production.”

Leading the way to discovering packaging innovation ”We are delighted with the success of this year’s Xeikon Café Europe. Once again it has shown its value to the industry with a substantial increase in visitors,” says Danny

Mertens continues, “The event delivered something for everyone whether newcomers to digital processes or those with more experience. It was clear that many of the visitors discovered new applications and production

possibilities. We clearly recognise the need from the industry for straight-forward objective, hands-on information – both from a technical and a business perspective. It was particularly rewarding this year to see the label and packaging converters taking the chance to learn and connect and be inspired. Their enthusiasm was evident from the interaction and the many questions asked while they attended Xeikon Café’s demonstrations and discussions. We have had great feedback this year from both visitors and exhibitors. Media & partner feedback stated this is becoming the biggest event on the planet dedicated to digital production in labels & packaging.” What visitors had to say Aljan de Boer, Head of Inspiration at Trendsactive and this year’s Conference keynote speaker enjoyed the three-day event and said: “There was a very strong vibe amongst visitors searching for new insights. They were looking for new things to inspire their future direction and wanted to explore new perspectives. I also found it great to see such a varied bunch of printing professionals from such a wide range of regions.” For AB Graphic, this was the fourth Xeikon Café they have attended as an exhibitor. Mark Hyde, UK Ireland and Australasia Sales Manager, stated: “We have had a lot of interest from visitors who are keen to develop creative labels with our embellishment capabilities. We try to be a one-stop shop for them with easy to use, high

59 quality and affordable systems and that has certainly been part of the many conversations we have been having.” It was the first attendance for converting equipment specialist Lemorau. They exhibited their finishing solutions. Susana Teixeira, CFO, states: “We saw the Xeikon Café advertising year after year, and it seemed the perfect environment for our solutions, so this year we decided to join as exhibitors. We like the broad scope of visitors coming from a wide range of sectors and countries, that are looking for good quality, robust solutions at a good price, and I’m pleased to close the event with lots of leads to follow-up on.” For Dmitri Belov of Moscow printer Sarmatia LLC, it is the second time he has visited the Xeikon Café. He comments: “We came here with a number of questions about our digital equipment from Xeikon, and have met a lot of useful people that helped us answer those questions. The Xeikon Café is a unique event where we can meet up with many people from different companies and share information and experiences. It is a real working environment which is important.” Fuji Film sends a clear message to anyone thinking of infringing our intellectual property Commenting on the ruling handed down by the Regional Court in Düsseldorf, Germany, Rob Fassam, R&D Director at FSIS said: “This sends a clear message to anyone thinking of infringing our intellectual property. We will continue to protect our investment by filing patents that cover our technology and we will take appropriate action against those who infringe. Commenting on the ruling handed down by the Regional Court in Düsseldorf, Germany, Rob Fassam, R&D Director at FSIS said: “This sends a clear message to anyone thinking of infringing our intellectual property. We will continue to protect our investment by filing patents that cover our technology and we will take appropriate action against those who infringe.

“I am delighted that the Regional Court in Düsseldorf has ruled in our favour. We invest significant time and resource developing new and exciting technology that benefits the inkjet industry.” In 2017 FUJIFILM Speciality Ink Systems Ltd (FSIS) filed suit against Nazdar Co., US and Nazdar Limited, UK as well as its German distributor Zaro GmbH before the competent Regional Court Düsseldorf (docket nos. 4b O 22/17 and 107/17). FSIS claimed Nazdar had infringed its UV ink patents EP 1 803 784 B3 and EP 2 383 314 B3 in Germany by offering its 702 & 703 Series UV inkjet inks and declaring them to be chemically compatible with the original inks designed for Fujifilm’s Acuity range of flatbed UV printers. The patents on these inks protect specific inkjet ink compositions providing a range of properties including improved flexibility, jetting performance and adhesion. In reaction to the infringement actions, Nazdar filed nullity actions against the patents in Germany before the German Federal Patents Court and asked the Regional Court Düsseldorf to stay the infringement proceedings. Furthermore, Nazdar contested infringement, but did also, in reaction to FSIS’ patent claims, change the chemical composition of its UV inkjet inks. However, despite redesigning the inks, Nazdar continued to market its UV inkjet inks as 702 & 703 Series and failed to indicate to customers the change in chemical composition in a way that FSIS considered necessary to

avoid patent infringement. With its judgements, the Regional Court in Düsseldorf has now confirmed infringement, injuncted Nazdar and Zaro from offering, bringing to market and any further use of patent infringing UV inkjet inks. It has also sentenced them to pay damages and render account. The Court also approved FSIS’s position that the change in chemical composition of the 702 & 703 Series is not sufficient to avoid infringement because Nazdar continues to market their UV inkjets inks as 702 & 703 Series without sufficient indication of the product change. Finally, while without prejudice of the nullity proceedings at the Federal Patents Court in Munich, the Regional Court in Düsseldorf did not follow Nazdar’s invalidity arguments and therefore also rejected the stay motion. Nazdar/Zaro have filed appeals against the judgements. Irrespectively, the judgements remain provisionally enforceable under the condition that FSIS will provide sufficient enforcement security. A date for the appeal hearing has been set for 7th November 2019. A date for a hearing in the nullity proceedings has not yet been set. FUJIFILM Speciality Ink Systems Limited is the Technology Centre of Excellence for UV curable ink within the FUJIFILM Inkjet Business Division. Its core skills are the development and manufacture of high performance UV curing inks that are used in many of the world’s leading printers.
