Winners of Asian Print A Thailand leads the pack with 32 wins, India trails behind with 10 awards, and Singapore comes in third with eight. Sha Jumari reports.

On 20 September 2019, at the Grand Ballroom of BITEC in Bangkok, Thailand, winners of the Asian Print Awards 2019 were announced.

This year, the event was organised in collaboration with Pack Print International 2019, which ran concurrently from 18 to 21 September.

Each year, the awards recognise and celebrate stellar print entries across the Asian region.

On an equally impressive note, India’s Pragati Offset returned to leave with the most awards won by a single company. Pragati took home a total of eight awards, including two golds.

The company also snagged the CGS Sponsor Award for Best use of Colour, interestingly enough for their black and white entry. With Pragati’s wins, India was second in the race, taking home 10 awards total.

“Since we started the Asian Print Awards the focus was on improving print quality by awarding companies with a gold, silver and bronze for excellence in print production here in Asia,” said Paul Callaghan, chairman of Asian Print Awards. “I can say that this goal was achieved several years ago.

Together with the judges and sponsors, along with the new levels of technology introduced into the industry, the quality levels rose year on year.”

Singapore may be small in size, but big in spirit. The country came close behind India in third place with nine awards. Singapore company, Allegro Print Pte Ltd additionally took home the coveted Special Judges Recognition Award.

Thailand made its host country proud yet again by sweeping the most awards for the night. The nation has consistently swept awards in the competition year on year, and this edition was no different. Thailand took home a total of 32 awards in the Asian Print Awards, eight of which are Gold.

“The 2019 Asian Print Awards has again proved to be one of the hardest in the history of the event. Our panel of dedicated judges worked over three full days in Singapore to go through the thousands of entries and put their reputation on the line to decide who wins what, and why,” Callaghan added.

In the same beat, should there be two competing entries that match in all quality levels, the same award may be given to both companies.

Canon unveils new Océ Colorado 1650 The game changing Océ Colorado 1650 is capable of producing matte or gloss prints without changing inks or media. By Sha Jumari.

Canon announced the Southeast Asian launch of the Océ Colorado 1650 printer. The printer made its debut at Pack Print International 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand, expanding the range of roll-to-roll large format devices that feature Canon UVgel technology. The Océ Colorado 1650 features two innovations in the form of a new flexible ink, and Océ FLXfinish technology.

“We are very excited to introduce the Océ Colorado 1650 in Southeast Asia at Pack Print 2019. The Océ Colorado 1650 was first introduced to Europe and North America at FESPA and this is the opportunity for us to launch in this part of the world,” said Steve Ford, Managing Director, Production Printing Asia, Canon.

The Océ Colorado 1650 is aimed at print service providers (PSPs) that are producing high volumes of

large format applications, such as self-adhesive vinyls, wall coverings, canvasses, soft signage and vehicle graphics that require a high degree of flexibility for mounting and framing.

“Southeast Asia is one of the fastest growing markets in display graphics in point-of-sales (POS), interior décor such as wallpaper and wraparound lamp shades, soft signage, and so on.

This is where we see the growth engine fuel the entire region in display graphics market,” said Ford.

Ford added that there has been high interest from customers in the region prior to the launch – namely Thailand: “The reason why we launched in Thailand is because we see this country as one of the biggest market opportunities for us in the region.

We also see market opportunities in Indonesia, Taiwan and Singapore. We foresee Thailand and Indonesia as the

top two areas for the first handfuls of sales.”

Soon after the launch, Canon has reportedly sold three units of the Océ Colorado 1650 printer to Thai PSPs. Océ FLXfinish – Game Changing Matte and Gloss Flexibility The Océ Colorado 1650 incorporates Canon’s Océ FLXfinish technology, a new approach to LED curing which allows the user to choose between matte or gloss modes for each individual print.

“The key differentiator for the Océ Colorado 1650 is the the FLXfinish technology which allows us to print matte or gloss as the output – without changing inks or paper. This is truly game changing,” said Ford. “Today, if customers want a matte or gloss output, they will have to use different medias or inks. With the Océ Colorado 1650, they can do it all within the one device.

It’s a different approach to UV curing that the market has not seen before.

The technology is resonating with the market at the moment.”

This feature allows PSPs to easily achieve different aesthetic finishes at the push of a button. For graphics producers, this is particularly enticing as they now have opportunities in premium POS and décor with just one printer and without switching media or inks. A gloss finish gives visual impact to applications such as banners and posters, while a matte appearance is particularly appealing for high quality indoor applications viewed in artificial light, such as wall coverings or premium instore POS materials.

Océ FLXfinish technology also enables printing on porous media, such as uncoated papers, wallpaper as well as soft signage materials such as textiles and silicon-edged graphics. Each ink droplet is ‘fixed’ immediately on jetting, which prevents absorption buy the substrate.

Ink Flexibility In addition, the Océ Colorado 1650 works with a new version of Canon UVgel ink. The ink is designed for maximum flexibility by increasing the ‘stretchability’ of each cured ink droplet. This results in output optimal for applications that require cutting, bending, creasing and folding without

risk of cracking, such as in soft signage.

At the Canon booth at Pack Print – which held the theme “FUEL EMOTION WITH PRINT” – this feature was demonstrated with a Volkswagen pop-up display. A smooth wraparound was printed across its body, and no cracks were visible due to the flexibility of the ink.

The new 64” production printer builds on the productivity, output quality, automation and media versatility of its predecessor, the Océ Colorado 1640. There are over 800 1640 printers worldwide since its release.

The Colorado Series features exact positioning, which allows for near perfect registration. This feature would be useful for double-sided printing and ‘inside out’ printing of media with the printable surface facing in to boosting productivity and versatility.

“By delivering consistently great quality, our large format graphics roll-to-roll and workflow solutions are helping print service providers to achieve operational excellence and extend their capabilities to new exciting applications. This allows them to focus their resources and energies on creating value for customers that will translate to sustainable business growth,” said Ford.

HP spotlights Thai customer creations The Digital Print Pavilion showcased an array of digital print products by HP Indigo users. Sha Jumari reports.

At Pack Print International 2019, HP had the largest booth of 250 sqm. The company made full use of its space and showcased new digital printing solutions that open growth opportunities for local customers and accelerate the transformation of the Thailand printing industry.

“The main highlight here is to show the variety of applications that HP Indigo is capable of doing. Today, we can print almost everything with our technology, from commercial printing, book and publishing and packaging printing, like shrink sleeves, labels, flexible and label printing. These are the key applications we can offer to the market now,” said Suparat Chotikultanachai, country manager for HP Indigo Thailand.

To do this, the company’s booth debuted the HP Indigo Digital Print Pavilion – a showcase of 10 partners who have leveraged on the capabilities of HP machines to unlock opportunities of high digital productivity. Some of the partners include CyberPrint Group, Salee Printing and Thainam.

“We invited our customers to showcase their applications using our Indigo technology. Our aim here is to put forth the message that with digital print, anything is possible,” said Suparat.

According to Suparat, the products shown here are all commerciallyprinted applications. Amongst those displayed, some of the applications displayed include flexible packaging, shrink sleeves, labels, folding cartons and book printers. Suparat emphasised that HP Indigo is currently the only technology that is able to deliver flexible packaging.

Thailand’s printing and packaging industries registered over 300 billion Baht in 2018 of which 40% came from

Suparat Chotikultanachai, country manager for HP Indigo Thailand. the printing industry and 60% from packaging. Three supporting growth industries are driving its growth - Food and Beverage, Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics, and e-Commerce.

“When we talk about Thailand, it’s not just Thailand. In terms of location, Thailand is in the middle of IndoChina. Surrounding us we have Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, which are considered emerging countries.

When they grow, we also grow. That’s because most of the technology in this region is in Thailand,” said Pavin Vorapruck, managing director for HP Inc. Thailand.

At Pack Print, HP presented end-toend web-to-print solutions from its portfolio, moving away from solely focusing on print technology. This includes the entire print ecosystem from pre-press, HP Indigo technology to finishing solutions partners.

The HP Indigo 7000 series was introduced to the Thai market for the first at the booth. The HP Indigo 7000 Digital Press is a sheet-fed digital

offset colour press that incorporates the patented HP ElectroInk liquid ink technology.

“A key highlight of our booth is the new 7000 series, which we are showing for the first time in Thailand. The machine is able print at double the speed, from 2,000 sheets per hour, to 4,000 sheets per hour. It can support a maximum of seven colours – CMYK plus spot colours,” said Suparat.

Another first for Thailand are a showcase of high value-added digital print samples with newly released HP ElectroInk vivid inks, Vivid Green and Vivid Pink. The vivid inks were first specially developed for the Indian photobook market’s need for brighter colours. The launch coincides with the local market’s needs for a wider gamut.

HP also unveiled the Stitch S series, a super wide dye sub production printer designed to unleash new production possibilities for interior décor and soft signage.

Pack Print International Concludes The 7th edition wraps up with a count of over 19,000 trade visitors

Happening from 18 to 21 September at BITEC in Bangkok, Thailand was the 7th Pack Print International (PPi).

Holding the theme ‘Shaping the future of packaging and printing in Asia’, the event is a tripartite collaboration between Messe Dusseldorf Asia, the Thai Packaging Printing Association and the Thai Printing Association. Also open for visitors are co-exhibitions, T-Plas 2019, wire and Tube Southeast Asia.

“We started out as an idea over a decade ago, between Messe Dusseldorf Asia and our two partners, the Thai Printing Association and Thai Packaging Association, to provide an international business platform for the packaging and printing sectors to propel the local industry forward, and to link global companies to Thailand,” said Gernot Ringling, managing director for Messe Dusseldorf Asia.

The exhibition was expected to welcome 30,000 trade visitors, with 30% from

outside of Thailand. According to Ringling, they are expecting the show to do even better than its 2017 edition, which was the record year of visitors for PPi. Over 300 companies from 25 countries took part in the Bangkok exhibition, including HP, Heidelberg, Konica Minolta, Riso, Fujifilm, Ricoh, Bobst, KURZ, Zund, Duplo, Sansin, Selic Corp, PMC label materials and more.

In 2018, Thailand’s printing and packaging industries registered over 300 billion Baht, of which 40% came from the printing industry and 60% from packaging. Visitors to the exhibition saw innovations in areas such as package printing, corrugated printing and packaging, digital printing large format printing, flexible packaging, amongst others.

Guest-of-honour Dheerayut Varnitshang, Thailand’s vice minister for industry graced the opening ceremony with a speech highlighting “Thailand 4.0”, which is growing Thai innovation in the manufacturing sectors.

Commenting on how the exhibitions play a part in forming sustainable successes on the back of the era of 4.0, Ringling added: “The synergistic colocation of the fairs seek to augment a company’s marketing strategies and enable businesses to connect in a faceto-face environment, in facilitating prospect communication and lead generation that is complemented with live product demonstrations on the show floor.”

“Through this, businesses can improve and extend their existing relationships with their client base in Thailand and the ASEAN region. For smaller setups, trade platforms like this provide an opportune opening for them to share their service or products with a wide, yet targeted group of audience,” he said.

Investment designed to help company diversify into new markets Headquartered in the city of Noida in the Delhi National Capital Region, Hora Arts Centre recently installed a Xeikon 3500 digital label press at its Western India plant in Ranjangaon near Pune.

The investment was made to ensure that labels reach customers’ just-intime production lines in the region.

Hora Arts is a short-run packaging and label supplier to leading global manufacturers of white goods and electronics who have customers such as Panasonic, LG Samsung, and a large number of original equipment manufacturers. 20 screen and digital presses to deliver high volumes of labels several times each day and night to its customers.

Maximizing its digital capabilities in the region, the first digital press installed at Ranjangaon is the Xeikon 3500 label press, capable of printing at 1200 dpi with variable dot density on pressure sensitive film and paper label stock up to 250gsm at 19.2 meters a minute.

With heavier stock such as 350gsm paperboard for mono-cartons, the speed remains at 9.6 meters a minute.

Apart from CMYK inks, the fifth print unit of the Xeikon 3500 can be used for coating applications or for special colors, including a flat white.

The Xeikon 3500 press is capable of printing heat transfer, water transfer, in-mould labels, and continuous length wallpaper materials. All of these are of interest to Hora Arts, who is looking to explore the capabilities of the new press to diversify its business, especially in the production of continuous lengths of roll-to-roll wallpaper designs.

Hora Arts is a structured and professionally run company managed by the second generation of the Hora family, Pradeep and Sanjay Hora. In the past year, the third generation also

joined the business. Shailender Kapoor, Plant Head at Noida, is very clear about why the company purchased the Xeikon press after evaluating it carefully.

“Frankly, this decision is based on our customers’ demand, and this was also the reason why we set up the plant in Ranjangaon years ago. The 2019 PIXI Awards is now open for entry Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Pte Ltd announced that the 2019 edition of its PIXI Awards is now open for entry submission. This year, PIXI celebrates the 12th year running and all indications are it will be the biggest competition date.

The Future of Barcodes is DotCode With the latest update of DotCode, a new and innovative 2D barcode system entered the market that allows barcodes to be applied at a speed of more than 1,000 codes per seconds.

This potentially revolutionary technology, which already proved successful in the European tobacco industry, could be a real win for other industries as well.

In times were fraudulent products are more present than ever before, barcodes could potentially provide more safety.

This why the latest version of DotCode was released in July 2019. DotCode is an innovative barcode system which is based on a dot symbology.

Manufactures in the tobacco industry have already adopted and used this track-and-trace technology with great success. One of the major advantages of the new system is that the code can be applied at a speed of more than 1,000 codes per second. This offers potential to other markets such as the beverage, distribution and e-commerce industry.

DotCode was adopted by the global standards organization GS1 in their latest General Specifications update.

The 4.0 update defines expanded symbology-specific assessments for print quality to be conform with the SC31/WG1 international committee work and ISO/IEC 15415, the standard for 2D barcode print quality.

The newest update also incorporates an encoding improvement based on an extensive testing of the original encoder algorithm, and experience in printing and reading DotCode in the European tobacco industry over several years.

A Technology for New Markets As DotCode is now established in the GS1 system, other application fields may be ready for the technology, too.

Scott Gray, solutions architect at GS1 Global Office, claims: “With the ratification of the revised DotCode specification by AIM and the forthcoming release of updated printing systems, readers and verifiers to support the new standard, GS1 is looking forward to conducting additional empirical testing to determine exactly where DotCode may offer an advantage over other GS1 symbologies.”

An Innovative 2D Barcode The public domain DotCode symbol is a 2D matrix barcode language, designed by Dr. Andy Longacre and was originally published by AIM. One of the most important characteristics of DotCode is the distinct dot pattern which enables high speed printing and other marking applications where common barcodes or connections between dots might be problematic.

The Revision 4.0 of DotCode has recently been ratified by AIM Inc., publisher of the most common barcodes and one of the most trusted global authorities when it comes to automatic identification and data capture technologies. Furthermore,

Another option would be “large dot” inkjet printing, for example, for serialized shipping container codes (SSCC) directly onto corrugated or other packaging.

DotCode isn’t only suitable for GS1 applications, but at least for now it’s optimized for them. The technology comes with numerous benefits for applications outside the GS1 system as well. If made available a public domain technology that’s increasingly used and supported by barcode label designers, barcode printer and scanner manufacturers and software developers, this technology offers a wide range of possibilities for many industries.

Konica Minolta launches AccurioLabel 230 Konica Minolta has launched AccurioLabel 230, the latest version in its digital toner press portfolio.

AccurioLabel 230 builds on the AccurioLabel 190 press and is claimed to bring numerous benefits for customers including productivity, flexibility and stability. It has been built on the established Konica Minolta AccurioPress engine. It is targeted at small- and mid-range segments and is suitable for label printers, print providers, brand owners, packaging companies and commercial printers.

Enhancements available with the 4-color Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 230 include: Increased speed, at 23.4m/min and representing up to a 147 percent increase, with most coated/uncoated papers, PP and PET media now able to be printed at full speed;

Productivity, with continuous highest quality 1200 x 1200 dpi print runs of up to 1000 meters able to be achieved without the need for recalibration; the time taken between jobs has also been eliminated, increasing productivity further; Overprinting, allowing printing of preprinted media, for example overprinting of flexo white pre-printed on clear PP labels; and More accurate print registration, with a built-in speed detector for media feeding also cutting paper wastage.

‘The AccurioLabel 230 has been developed very much with customer interests in mind,’ said Khaled Alakhwas, industrial printing product

manager, Professional Printing Division, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe. ‘Customers and prospects who are shifting to digital production have welcomed the launch and have been highly impressed by productivity, stability and new features that help shape their thinking for new profitable business applications.​ ‘As one example, it now takes around half the amount of time on the AccurioLabel 230 to print four 300m jobs. We know that smaller label converters have found that up to 60 percent of their existing jobs could be done digitally, so freeing up their conventional press for longer-run work.’

Edoardo Cotichini, industrial printing team manager, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe, said: ‘Whereas the machine might look the same as its predecessor, there are big differences inside. This new model marks the next chapter of an incredible success story when you think how far we have come since entering the label market only four years ago.’

Shipments have already started for the new AccurioLabel 230 digital label press, which has been developed and manufactured in Europe with Danish firm Grafisk Maskinfabrik (GM).

Fuji Xerox’s Innovation Re:Mix Forum Future x Smart discussed the challenges and trends for print in an omni-channel marketing world. Sha Jumari reports.

Fuji Xerox Singapore held its second Innovation Re:Mix Forum Future x Smart 2019, at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre. The event brought together industry leaders and senior executives to share research insights and practices in enabling a future ‘smarter’ workplace.

The full-day conference featured a lineup of business and thought leaders participating in keynote presentations, panel discussions, and interactive workshops categorised into three themes: enterprise, small and medium business, and graphics communications marketing.

On the graphics communications end, omni-channel marketing where content is distributed across multiple platforms was the theme du jour. Against the

backdrop of a diverse and fragmented media landscape, the forum discussed the role of printed products in today’s marketing landscape.

“Ten years ago, you get a lot of print communication, and it became a less trusted medium. Then digital came up, and everyone thought it was going to replace print. But today we see a lot of the digital communications that we get, are being ignored or deleted,” said Tim Howard, associate director, graphic communications marketing, Fuji Xerox Singapore.

“Print has come full circle to become a trusted piece again, because you just don't see it as often. A lot of people say print is dead, but it has been around for centuries and will continue to exist. It is truly evolving.”

“What you can do with print is amazing and this is where perceptions need to change.

Before you see a four-colour product with a little of personalisation. Today, there’s a whole spectrum of things you can do with hyperpersonalisation and combined with the tactile feel of a printed product – print has in turn become high quality, trusted, and a piece that someone is going to hold on to. That is the potential of print today,” Howard asserted.

Howard added on that print and digital solutions as complements of each other: “Print is not just a media or a substrate, it’s a medium that takes you on a journey. It can take you to a digital journey. Print has expanded in terms of how it can be used as a communication platform.”

One of the trends highlighted was that a lot of printers are turning into or looking to be one-stop services.

Outside of simply printing, print companies want to be a go-to shop for a creative campaign.

“Before, the challenge was taking that first step to invest in a print platform.

Today, the challenge for a lot of printers, be it offset, or digital or hybrid, is to be able to expand services beyond print, to become communications specialists.

The print provider will still exist, but it’s the communication specialist that will be more successful,” said Howard.

“Omni-channel marketing is where the industry is headed. It’s a lot easier now, especially with the technology today, how information is happening so quickly, and the off-the-shelf solutions available now. It’s become a lot easier to make that transition today,” Howard advised. “For printers, understand what your capabilities and limitations are, and where you want to go.”

The forum also touched on creating effective marketing campaigns, tapping on new analytics tools, and learning from successful marketing campaigns.

Print Showcase A showcase of printed works by Fuji Xerox presses further emphasise print’s expanded capabilities. With the theme

“A Cut Above The Rest”, the exhibit featured a holographic backdrop and 3D paper gemstone jewellery printed using Fuji Xerox’s Iridesse Production Press, PrimeLink and B9 series.

Three sets of jewellery were created and intricately designed to feature the different presses. Iridesse was the clear highlight of the bunch, as its metallic finish mimicked the shiny effect of actual gemstones. A holographic tower printed by the Iridesse stood prominently in the middle of the showcase floor, to further highlight the capabilities of the press. Delegates left the conference with a customised tea blend, packages in a diamond-shaped, printed yet again, by the Iridesse.

According to Fuji Xerox, the showcase demonstrated “how print can be reimagined in striking, new ways while it underscored the integration of Machine, Digital and Human Intelligence, encapsulating Fuji Xerox’s core value propositions in digital transformation as well.”

Rapida 106 at Tosho Printing with top-class performance • 130 jobs with an average of 270 sheets each in 11.5 hours • Special commendation from Koenig & Bauer • Extraordinarily efficient means of production Tosho Printing in Kawagoe near Tokyo has been the proud owner of two Rapida 106 presses for four years now. One of those presses, a five-colour configuration with LEDUV drying, recently set a new record for the number of job changes in a single shift. Over the course of 11.5 hours, 130 jobs were printed with an average run length of 270 sheets.

That is equivalent to over 11 jobs per hour. This outstanding achievement earned a special commendation for the company’s press operators from Koenig & Bauer.

The Rapida 106 is currently the most important sheetfed offset

press in the Tosho print centre. The company management likes to refer to it as their ‘moneymaker’: “With its production output and the speed of job changeovers, the press achieves an excellent level of economic efficiency.”

And that naturally leaves everyone at Tosho very happy.

Tosho Printing is one of the oldest and most respected printing companies in Japan. It produces high-quality books as well as other commercial products.

Indeed, one of the country’s wellknown authors has commented: “Japan is fortunate to have the printers at Tosho. Because they produce books with passion.”

Alongside the five-colour Rapida 106, the company operates another press of the same type in a four-colour version.

Memjet launches Dur Recognizing the expanding role digital printing is playing in the label and package printing markets, Memjet and its OEM partners were at Labelexpo Europe to highlight the latest developments in inkjet production.

At Labelexpo, Memjet showcased the features of its third-generation printing technology, DuraFlex. In addition, Memjet OEM partners demonstrated an expanded range of Memjet-powered printing solutions that enable the fast, easy production of high-quality labels and packaging.

DuraFlex is a modular single-pass print solution that combines Memjet’s signature features of speed, simplicity and affordability with new attributes such as enhanced durability, A4 and A3+ widths in a four-colour printhead, a high-speed data path and modules that control all printhead functions.

“The market opportunity for inkjet label and package printers has never been stronger,” said Kim Beswick, general manager of Memjet’s benchtop and minipress division. “Localized food and beverage trends, combined with e-commerce business models, demand for mass versioning, and customization of marketing content means there is no end to the growth in demand for digital color labels and packaging. Heidelberg debuts redesigned Speedmaster CX 75 Pack Print International was the launchpad for the world premiere for the new ergonomic design of the Speedmaster CX 75.

At Pack Print International 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand, Heidelberg demonstrated the new ergonomicallydesigned Speedmaster CX 75 for the first time. Under the headline of ‘Smart Packaging’, a four colour Speedmaster CX 75 was showcased with an MK Easymatrix 106 CS die cutter, an MK Diana Easy 115 folder gluer and the Prinect workflow.

“The CX 75 is a flexible printing press for small- and medium-sized printing companies. It is flexible with regards to whatever substrates it can print on.

The Speedmaster is a multi-unit simplex sheetfed offset press in a 50 x 70cm format. First launched in 2017, the CX 75 is based on the flagship XL 75, and both models have over 19,000

units installed worldwide. Both the CX 75 and XL 75 share the same core functionalities. The machines are able to run at four- to six-colour plus coater with 15,000sph maximum speed for the CX 75.

has a “modernized gallery concept” with generous spacing between the printing units, meant to ease operator tasks such as staging printing plates, adding ink, changing washup cloths and rubber blankets, or doing maintenance.

Delivery of the redesigned Speedmaster CX 75 and XL 75 is set to begin in September 2019. According to Heidelberg, a redesigned CX 75 has already been sold to a Thai printer.

Shorter print runs, variety of jobs To have the first showcase of the redesigned Speedmaster CX 75 in Thailand is significant, as it aligns with the needs of the region. The CX 75 is designed to be optimally tailored to the needs of smaller printing companies in one- and two-shift operation. It is ideal for commercial customers who require a flexible press with a much smaller footprint combined with high substrate flexibility. With the CX 75, new markets

like packaging can also be explored.

“In my opinion, the CX 75 is the ideal press for customers in markets in Southeast Asia. It’s very versatile, and very robust, with proven XL 75 technology,” said Frank. “This is not for the highly industrialised businesses, but more for the ones that are familybusinesses. This does not run at 18,000 sheets/hour, because the CX 75 is more a machine for smaller print runs – which is what we are seeing more of in the region.”

“Print runs are getting shorter and shorter, but the variety of different jobs you have to print is getting bigger and bigger. Therefore, you need a press that is compact, which has all the automation for fast makeready, and of course, knowing how the climate is like in Southeast Asia, you need a robust machine,” Frank continued.

Small and medium-sized print companies in Southeast Asia are thriving in particular. Frank attributes this to better customer service and quick decision-making.

“One of the reasons why family businesses in Asia have a real chance is they are service oriented, they are available around the clock for their customers, and this is what the customers, of course, appreciate,” said Frank.

“They are pragmatic which means they make fast decisions. With larger companies, their decision-making process involves multiple levels, which can take longer. The family businesses in Asia tend to be flexible and are very responsive to market needs. This is where their strength lies.”

Dare to be different.

The impression is dead. Long live the impression! Long live printing that is integrated alongside other communication channels. This is the way forward and to get it right, you need to make two changes: throw away the old baggage you’ve carried for so long and embrace a change of mentality. You must swap the old habits of traditional printing for digital ones!

“I am optimistic for the years to come,” says Mr. Coquard, head of Industria, a Parisian print service provider with a passion for all things ‘tailor-made’ and right now on the verge of switching completely to digital printing. “There are fewer and fewer print experts within the customers we engage with.

Our contacts are coming more often from higher up in their organizations, in marketing or communications, and they are facing broader challenges.

They do not have a pure print problem but more a communications challenge.

And those with a print problem alone often don’t know how to manage it.

So, if a print service provider can offer relevant communication proposals, ensuring top quality within the required delivery schedule and with a positive communication result (outcome), then there is definitely business to be made!”

Printing has not changed as rapidly as it could have, as new technologies based on toner and inkjet have worked alongside the older ones

(offset, rotogravure, screen printing, flexography). It certainly has benefited from all the advantages brought by IT and software, whether in traditional or digital printing and finishing equipment (small and large formats), in process management or in marketing with multichannel or cross media communications.

We shouldn’t forget the numerous embellishments now available for all technologies and in all markets. In short, the print impression has been transformed, re-muscled, adapted and developed, while meeting a fundamental, necessary trend for reduced environmental impact (control

of rejects, less waste, better inks, sustainable papers, etc…)

Some traditional printers, albeit too few of them, go ahead and develop full digital departments or replace offset presses with digital models. But that‘s not enough, digital printing requires a change of mind: towards flexibility of operation, responsiveness, different management schedules, and real tailormade service. It is no coincidence that major players in digital printing are often derived from smaller reprographic structures that already have a ‘service culture’.

It is now possible to respond to customer-demands that could not have been met before, such as the printing of a single copy of a book, very short print-runs for brochures or documents as well as packaging and fully customized labels. The demand for long-tail solutions can now be met with digital printing offers from Canon, Domino, Fujifilm, Heidelberg, HP, Koenig & Bauer, Komori, Ricoh, Riso, Xeikon, Xerox, etc.

The search for the best price is giving way to the search for the most profitable service for the customer. ‘Print only’ is being replaced by ‘a universe with print in it’. From order to delivery, without sacrificing creativity, quality and overall print profitability. The key question becomes “what is the ROI (return on investment) of a print?”

Printed documents that can be dematerialized (into the non-physical) will continue to be de-materialized, so there’s only one way to remain in business profitably: by providing added-value and the related services.

Customers no longer want to be told how it works, but what it does in terms of results (impact) and in this regard print must contribute (i.e. communicate effectively) when integrated within a mix of media channels.

The return of print Consumers are saturated with digital information. They can however be positively sensitive (receptive) to different communications that engage them in a distinctive, personal way: invitations, brochures, books, photos, greeting cards, personalized documents using some of the advances in 21st century print: special colours (gold,

silver, fluorescent, etc.), varnish, relief, new shapes, form-factors.

“We see a return of print, ten years ago it was cheesy, especially for young people, now you have to know how to mix print with other modes of communication,” adds Mr. Coquard.

“We are rediscovering that a welltargeted print communication allows us to weave a link to customers”.

This is echoed in other industries where there is also a return to ‘the physical’ e.g. Polaroid images in photo and the Vinyl album in music. We are heading towards more automation of the printproduction process – from

receiving the order, managing the files to the shipping of the final print job.

Customers want human proximity and fast turnaround time. These two requests are becoming more and more the key criteria for selecting service providers. But how to provide such capabilities when the client is miles away?

Equipment wise and in order to deliver the latest services, more and more service providers are starting to use digital printing and embellishments systems (e.g. MGI/KonicaMinolta) or large-format flatbed printing systems (e.g. SwissQprint) with associated cutting (e.g. Zünd).

46 production lines – printing and finishing/converting and have very specific capabilities. They typically address national and international clients and markets.

- Printing factories, generally located near communication centres (airports, etc.), who can efficiently handle commodity print jobs with their optimized processes - Online printers, with fully integrated workflows across printing and finishing for efficient shipping and delivery across countries and borders. Users themselves need to upload the relevant content and select from among defined formats and substrates.

The digital transformation is in small and large format as well. Signage, posters, POS/POs, interior decoration, even textile or car-wrapping are now fully digital. Last but not least, environmental concerns are, for example, driving LED dryers to replace infrared dryers in all production printing systems. New substrates are changing the market landscape enabling new applications and reducing environmental impact.

Online printing factories with offset printing fleets, small and large format digital printers (e.g. Onlineprinters, Pixartprinting) will remain and will further grow, having conquered the various sectors of commodity printing.

They will retain this, supported by customers who are also print service providers using them under the socalled white label.

The consequence of all these recent developments: a new market segmentation is looming in printing.

We can distinguish six segments that sometimes overlap each other (a bit like in the food, home equipment, or business supply industries): - Multiservice printing companies expecting customers to walk through the door anytime, often described as small convenient (corner) copyshops.

- Print providers located in metropolitan centres providing quality and fast turnaround time, serving key accounts

to whom they have access and to whom they provide different print services.

- Print providers that are well equipped across multiple technologies, able to take on small and large orders. They have the necessary space being located on the outskirts of cities, however they suffer the disadvantageof depending on logistics and delivery times.

- The specialists (books, magazines, packaging, etc.). They have optimized

So the new mantra of the printing game is to define where you want to play and to do it right. The winners are the ones providing real services and addressing new segments and markets, moving away from commodity printing. In the not so distant future, Amazon and Google, to name just two, are waiting on the weaknesses of today’s print players to then place their own pawns in the game, so as to expand their capabilities building on their proven networks and process expertise. Amazon has in fact already started.

Inkjet Printing Technology – smaller, faster and less moving parts

Diversification of inkjet printing. Inkjet printing technologies are shared between thermal (HP), piezo (Epson), continuous (Kodak). The inks can be aqueous (dyes, pigments); solvent (better strength); UV polymerization; sublimation (fabric). And the printheads may be in a row and / or staggered, mobile or stationary (also called multi-pass versus single-pass).

Competition is fierce among the various suppliers of the inkjet market. Memjet (Duralink head with Waterfall technology) has chosen to sign agreements with Canon, MGI, Konica Minolta, Gallus, Rigoli (etc.). Fujifilm seems to be on the same track with its Samba heads found in the Motion Cluster (BOBST/Mouvent/ Radex). Xaar (many heads including the last quad 5601) signed an agreement with Seiko and Chinese manufacturers.

HP relies on PageWide technology, from desktop printers to the graphics industry, from small format to large format. HP as well has unique Indigo technology which celebrated 25 years in 2018. Epson is developing a fixed printhead for the label industry. Canon launched a similar approach at first for the office.

Since the end of 2017, Landa has been offering presses based on its exclusive Nanography technology aiming at reinventing printing. Kodak has continuous inkjet printing in the form of independent heads in systems aiming at the high productivity markets (Prosper, Versamark and UltraStream).

Screen launches new digital label printer with CGS technology Launched at Labelexpo, Screen’s new Truepress Jet L350UV SAI inkjet utilises press proprietary colour management technologies developed in collaboration with CGS. At Labelexpo, SCREEN Graphic Solutions Co., Ltd. (SCREEN GA) launched its new Truepress Jet L350UV SAI digital label printing machine. The inkjet printer is equipped with additional slots for mounting inkjet printheads. It has seven ink slots, making it possible to work alongside CMYK with white, orange and blue to effectively expand the colour space.

In order to make the best possible use of the extended colour space and the ink sets, SCREEN relies on the colour management know-how of CGS Publishing Technologies.

The Truepress Jet L350UV SAI has been equipped with a specially developed technology based on the core concept of the latest, fully automated colour management software ORIS x

Gamut. The proprietary technology enables the accurate reproduction of spot colours in an easy and reliable way with an extended fixed colour palette.

I travel to many events as your self-appointed Intergalactic Ambassador! I have started to discern a pattern in the talktracks regarding the formation of an independent global print network, based on the foundation that all members are owners of the same print technology.

In theory, this idea is not impossible to achieve. All you need is a group of printers with the same printing technology who could collectively execute client work across countries and continents. There are already very successful printing networks out in the world who do this every day. Cimpress, who owns VistaPrint, might be the best known, but they are not alone. Gelato, Cloudprinter, HappyPrinting and others also have networks of printers who fulfil work around the world.

In theory, those printers who band together to create a network can offer their clients more services in more locations. They could help their clients in unique ways on local levels – have you ever tried to have an anecdote or expression translated? It doesn’t always work out. Neither does cost-effective shipping across oceans. Between shipping interruptions and the havoc caused by customs-delays, delivering worldwide can be angst-ridden and heart-breaking. Not to mention profit-

destroying. A network that transfers files and prints locally could be a solution.

In theory, such a network of printers is a fine-tuned colour-management machine. Upon colour approval, the network can disseminate the ink settings so that what you see in Denver is what you see in Denmark… every time. In theory, the client’s choice of paper/

substrate (or coffee mug or t-shirt) is available to everyone in the network, anytime they need it. The same goes for finishing options: cutters, perforators, folding and inserters are all identical.

The problem with this theory is that it is based on plausibility and possibility and we all know that there is gap between theory and reality. If all the parts that need to fall into place are delivered then

52 it works. The problem with this theory is the risk in trusting that all of those parts will fall into place every time.

And, it has to be every time. The risk to a business and its reputation extends across all borders.

So, what is a girl who prints to do?

Well, the global network idea isn’t crazy… and you shouldn’t dismiss it.

If your goal is to expand your business, you should be looking at network options. But you may have to look at it from 30,000 feet to see where the opportunity is for your business.

Taking into consideration that the pool of print customers you have access to is more likely to be shrinking or stagnant, then looking beyond your geographical borders for business and new technology partners is a logical expansion. Those borders can surround your country or surround your neighbourhood, but regardless of the boundaries without the proper relationships you cannot achieve your expansion goals.

Manufacturers, business organizations and user groups all want to be the central point for the network creation relationship, but their vested interest

in selling this concept is directly tied to selling the products, services and organization memberships needed to accomplish the goal. With all the mergers and acquisitions, as well as manufacturers playing musical partner chairs, it seems quite risky to leave relationship development in someone else’s hands.

Another thing to consider, from a competition standpoint, is why a printer would want to cooperate and collaborate with many printers who have the same technology? Do they all bid on the same jobs? How does one printer get chosen over another in the same city or country? Does such

cooperation become another breeding ground for bidding wars and the further commoditization of print?

I just don’t see it going that way.

The more printers can stand out with unique services and opportunities for their customers, the better chance they have at winning jobs and avoiding consistent price wars with identical technology users.

Enter… drupa!

Vietnam's industrial production rose by 10.0 percent year-on-year in May 2019, accelerating from a 9.3 percent growth in the previous month. Output increased further for manufacturing (11.6 percent vs 10 percent in April); and water supply and waste treatment (8.4 percent vs 7.9 percent).

On the other hand, production of electricity supply and distribution went up at a softer pace (11.0 percent vs 12.4 percent) and mining and quarrying output declined (-1.5 percent vs 2.4 percent). Considering the first five months of the year, industrial output grew by 9.4 percent compared to the same period a year earlier.

Industrial Production in Vietnam averaged 9.15 percent from 2009 until 2019, reaching an all time high of 28.40 percent in January of 2010 and a record low of -10.10 percent in February of 2013.

Océ to officially rename as Canon Production Printing Canon Inc. and Océ Holding B.V. today announced the official corporate name (trade name) change of Canon Group company Océ to Canon Production Printing.

After joining the Canon Group in 2010, Océ continued to develop and manufacture its printing products under the Océ brand. By renaming Océ to Canon Production Printing and integrating the Océ products under the Canon brand, the company hopes to “create brand unity across all areas of our printing business, improve synergies across our portfolio and establish a clear end-to-end, go-tomarket approach”.

The change of the company name comes into effect as of January 1, 2020.

Since its establishment in 1877, Océ has introduced a number of unique copying and printing technologies.

Through further integration with the Canon Group, Océ will continue to develop its core technologies and grow its market share as Canon Production Printing, in order to accelerate the growth of the Canon Group’s commercial printing business worldwide.

Fitz also held a number of senior leadership positions at General Motors, both in Europe and the United States, and served as GM’s first chief risk officer. He also worked as the senior vice president and CFO of Nexteer Automotive, a global automotive steering systems company.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan and a Master of Business Administration from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University.

Fitz also serves as a board member for Blink Charging.

HP Announces CEO Succession Dion Weisler to step down, Enrique Lores appointed CEO effective 1 November 2019.

HP Inc. announced that its board of directors has unanimously appointed Enrique Lores, currently President of HP’s Imaging, Printing and Solutions business, to succeed Dion Weisler as the company’s President and CEO, effective November 1.

Weisler’s decision to step down at this time is due to a family health matter and he will be returning home to Australia. He will work with Lores to ensure a seamless transition and will remain at the company through January 2020. Following this, Weisler will continue to serve on HP’s board of directors until the next annual meeting of stockholders.

Weisler joined HP in 2012 and has served as President and CEO since 2015. HP has added approximately $7 billion in annual revenue, generated over $13 billion in free cash flow, and has met or exceeded its non-GAAP EPS guidance for 15 consecutive quarters since separation.

“Serving as CEO of HP is the highlight of my career, and I want to thank the entire HP team for the support they have shown me. I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved and equally confident in where we are heading as a company,” said Weisler.

“Enrique has been a tremendous partner whose leadership has been instrumental in setting this company up for success and delivering on our strategy.

Epson will expand the scope of inkjet applications by using the lab as a center primarily for collaborating with research institutes and companies that are innovating inkjet production processes or developing new inkjet-compatible materials.

Jet Press 750S awarded FOGRA certification for contract proofing Accreditation makes Fujifilm’s third generation B2 inkjet press both the world’s fastest contract proofing device and the world’s only production press certified for contract proofing

Fujifilm announces that its highly regarded third generation B2 inkjet press has been awarded Fogra certification for contract proofing, including FOGRASl and FOGRA52 accreditation for premium coated and uncoated wood-free substrates respectively. This follows tests carried out at Fujifilm’s Advanced Print Technology Centre in Brussels, using Fujifilm’s own proprietary XM F ColorPath colour management software.

66 Tonejet Cylone direct-to-pack digital printer moves to new manufacturing facility Guru Labels in Australia has installed a second Xeikon 3300 digital label press with inline finishing to further expand its capabilities and drive new business plans. Based in Lisarow, a developing suburb of the Central Coastal region of New South Wales located 90 km from Sydney, the company provides labels of all different types, shapes and sizes to multiple sectors across the whole of Australia. Established in 2001, the family owned business is now regarded as a Xeikon house and one of the most dynamic digital label printers in Australia. Guru Labels has recently purchased and refurbished a 36,000 sq. ft print factory, gaining four times more space and the opportunity to design a purpose-built manufacturing plant with a full IT team on site.

Direct food contact inks a vailable globally Sun Chemical today announced that it has signed an exclusive agreement with the innovative German printing inks manufacturer Epple Druckfarben to combine their resources to make Epple’s class-leading series of sheetfed offset inks for direct food contact, BoFood® Organic, available to a global audience.

BoFood Organic is a worldwide patented sheetfed offset ink for printing on the inside of folding carton food packaging, also allowing direct food contact. All the raw materials used in the manufacture of the ink have been approved for use in foodstuffs.

Under the agreement, ownership of the intellectual property in BoFood Organic remains with Epple, which has granted Sun Chemical a licence to market BoFood Organic under the name of SunPak® Organic, reflecting the ink’s food-safe qualities.

The two companies have also agreed to work together to further develop the platform technology for other potential applications.

Commenting on the agreement, Dr. Carl Epple, Member of the Management Board, Epple Druckfarben, says: “We see ourselves as pioneers in the development of sustainable sheetfed offset printing inks and are particularly proud of having created a worldwide patented offset ink that has been approved for printing on the inside of food packaging. It’s therefore gratifying that Sun Chemical, the world’s largest manufacturer of printing inks, has recognised the quality of our technology and we look forward to cooperating with them around the marketing and potential future development of the inkset for the benefit of common customers and printer.”
