Fuji Xerox positioning themselves for success at drupa 25,000 sq’ of technology, applications and the Ministry of Sound drupa 2016 is heralded as ‘inkjet drupa’ yet again. Perhaps in 2012 the technology at production speeds was in its infancy whereas in 2016 it has come of age. Advancements in print quality has meant that many more applications can be undertaken with acceptable colour rendition
A few years ago we were told that inkjet was the future of print and I must confess to being very skeptical, however, today I think it is highly credible. Although the majority of applications are still transactional, invoice and statements, or direct mail and books there is a clear pattern of not only faster more productive presses but the additional provision of technology to service lower volumes and moving into the toner heartland. For drupa 2016 Xerox has announced that they will highlight a number of new inkjet presses including the Impika products that will not be seen in Asia because Fuji Xerox has had great success with their own range of production continuous feed presses having sold more than 80 engines in their territory, the FX 2800, FX1400 twin engine and single-engine duplex.
Both versions of the FX 1400 can be seen the new Integrated Customer Experience Center (ICEC) in Bangkok along with the complete range of Fuji Xerox’s production portfolio of presses, finishing and software solutions. “This center has been

This is an area of the market that InfoTrends calls the ‘Zone of Disruption’. The definition being primarily those offerings aimed at the sub three million prints a month with an acquisition cost around a US$1M filling the gap between high volume roll fed inkjet, like the FX1400, and high quality lower volume toner products, for example the Xerox Versant 2100. In addition to the Xerox Rialto 900 being identified as a contender, Xerox will also be highlighting the Xerox Brenva HD that also falls into this zone. Fuji Xerox are in the process of evaluating the potential market for Rialto and Brenva for the financial suitability for their customers in the Asia region. Just Let the Work Flow

Landa brakes the silence In the weeks closing up to drupa 2016, Landa finally broke the silence and announces its lineup of nanographic printing presses. By Sha Jumari. S10
At drupa 2012, the talk of the town was Landa Group’s new digital printing technology, that chairman Benny Landa coined ‘nanography’. The premise of nanotechnology is built upon the ability to produce offset quality at offset speed and productivity through digital printing. This would bring aboard all of digital’s benefits including the elimination of cumbersome conventional set-up processes and variable data printing. Perhaps the most tantalising allure: the promise of true cost-effective production of short-to-medium run lengths. With such big claims, the technology was received with much fanfare; even though no working press was presented at drupa 2012. Of course, it helped that Benny Landa, also known as the father of digital printing and inventor of Indigo technology that HP now owns, is at the helm of this technology. Orders and downpayments were made, yet no nanography presses were shipped out to date. Since then, Landa was reticent on further nanotechnology developments
- until the end of March 2016 saw Landa making the official announcement that a series of nanography printing presses to be unveiled at drupa. Along with that, the company will also introduce Landa Nano-Metallography, a metallisation technology that can halve the cost of metallised printing compared to foil transfer processes. A total of four products will be released utilising the nanotechnology. The upcoming edition presents not just a (re?)launchpad, but also the defining moment for Landa to deliver on the promises made at the last drupa.
Throughout drupa 2016, Landa will hold live product demonstrations of Landa Nano-Metallography on a narrow-web label press. Landa will double the size of its drupa 2016 stand to 3,000 m2 and will conduct live demonstrations of all of the new Nanographic Printing Presses. Theatre presentations will be held five times a day for the entire duration of the exhibition. Reservations can be requested in advance or may be booked at kiosks on the Landa stand (Hall 9) during the exhibition, subject to availability.
“Fourteen years of nanotechnology research has enabled us to make tremendous breakthroughs in the quality, speed and cost of printing,” said Landa. “Landa Nanographic Printing Presses produce offset quality, and now at offset speeds and offsetcompetitive cost per print - on virtually any paper stock. This research has also spawned a new technology, NanoMetallography, which will enable metallization graphics at less than half the cost of foil, with zero waste - and is quicker and simpler to use.”
“We expect visitors to our stand at drupa to be completely blown away by the amazing performance of these products – for which we will be taking orders at drupa. Our presses will start shipping in early 2017.” Landa S10 & S10P The S10 and S10P is a series of sheetfed presses that run at 13,000 B1 sheets per hour. The two presses are described to be ultra-fast, offset-quality presses that offer up digital printing at offsetcompetitive cost per print. The S10 sheetfed press is for the packaging and converting industries, while the S10P perfecting press is targeted at the commercial printing industry. The S10 is a single-sided B1 format press to enable just-in-time mainstream efficiency for the production of folding carton, POP/POS and corrugated boxes.

Landa W10 The new W10 Press is touted as the industry’s first digital press for mainstream production of flexible packaging. The meter-wide, highspeed web press prints up to 8 colours at 200 meters per minute on plastic packaging films, paper, carton board and aluminum foil. According to Landa, the specialty of the Landa W10 press is that it is able to produce gravure quality printing at ultra-fast, production speeds. A broad range of substrates can be used, from plastic packaging films to metal foils, from paper to carton. There will also be a solution to meet the needs for affordable short-to-medium run lengths of highest gravure-quality packaging materials, but with flexocompetitive costs and productivity. The W1 is said to be cost effective for runs up to 10,000 linear meters.

Landa Nano-Metallography Landa has announced a new nanotechnology breakthrough for the graphics metallisation market. The company’s new Nano-Metallography technology offers zero-waste metallization, reducing costs by more than half compared to foil. This process is purported to be quicker and simpler, to streamline the production of metallised print and improve customer profitability. Landa Nano-Metallography is operable with the full spectrum of conventional printing technologies, including narrow-web flexo, offset and screen for the production of labels, sheetfed offset for folding carton and commercial printing, web-offset for publishing and wide-web flexo and gravure for flexible packaging. “Current metallisation processes are prohibitively expensive due to the high cost of foil and tremendous waste,” said Landa. “Our Nano-Metallography technology will enable metallisation
at less than half the cost of foil, with zero-waste – and it's microwave compatible. We expect this technology to be available to customers in 2017.”

Agfa Graphics offers full computer-to-plate autonomy Agfa Graphics has added a new member to its Advantage N platesetter family – the Advantage N-PL. With its ability to image up to 3,100 plates continuously at a throughput speed of up to 400 plates per hour, the newcomer takes computer-to-plate (CtP) productivity and automation to the next level. Continuous plate production is made possible by the integrated pallet load module of the Advantage N-PL. This module supports two different plate formats – single plates and panorama plates – and allows printers to have both online simultaneously. The printer either loads two stacks of 1,500 single plates or one stack of 1,500 panorama plates. In addition, an extra 100 plates can be loaded on top. “The pallet load mechanism is quite simple. When the CtP engine has used up its first stack of plates, it automatically puts the second stack in place to continue plate production”, says Emiel Sweevers, Marketing Manager for Newspaper Engines, Agfa Graphics. “Thanks to this continuous production, we can avoid inconvenient plate leftovers. Moreover, the Advantage N-PL autonomy of more than 3,000 plates significantly reduces the number of necessary production stops and averts manual plate-loading errors such as badly stacked plates.”
Advantage N-PL pallet loading happens in daylight White light loading The pallet load module also enables printers to load new plates under white light circumstances, without interrupting the production process. By inserting a light protection shutter between the empty stack and the online stack, for example, new plates can be loaded through the back or the side of the machine without damaging the online ones with UV light. “The plate stacks are protected by a transport harness until they are moved to the online position inside the Advantage N-PL. That, together with the light protective shutter, allows printers to load a new stack without
needing yellow light conditions”, Sweevers explained. “The loading possibilities of the Advantage N-PL also add to the engine’s ability for continuous production.” Pallet load bonuses The Advantage N-PL’s working process significantly reduces packaging costs. In this way, the engine takes a sustainable and ecological approach to plate production. Another bonus is the possibility to combine the pallet load module with other Advantage N units. The module is available as an upgrade for both the Advantage N-TR HS and the Advantage N-TR VHS.

Konica Minolta announces Digital Workhorse – bizhub PRO 1100 Konica Minolta Business Solutions Asia (BSA) announced that the bizhub PRO 1100 series, the company’s latest production printer, will be officially launched in the ASEAN region at the company’s upcoming Connect 2016 conference on May 25, 2016. (ppm) with high print quality of up to 1,200 dots per inch (dpi). The machine can handle expected average volumes of between 150,000 and 300,000 prints and peaks up to 2.2 million black and white prints per month. This puts the printer at the top tier range of LPPs in the market for an entry level price. The drupa 2016 Preview – What to Expect Part 2 This is the second instalment of drupa 2016 highlights. By Sha Jumari. In addition, Esko will launch a fully enhanced digital finishing offering, beginning with two new table families, Kongsberg X and Kongsberg C. The Kongsberg line of cutting, creasing and milling tables will be presented in a new simplified platform choice, complete with fully integrated software solutions.
Esko (Hall 08b) Together with sister company X-Rite Pantone and subsidiaries Enfocus and MediaBeacon, Esko will be showcasing a wide range of innoations at its 900-square-meter stand. The theme for the stand will be ‘Packaging Simplified’, and Esko intends to take visitors through each step of a typical packaging production workflow with six zones. Each zone will feature solutions and key innovations from exhibiting companies. Esko has completely updated its software solutions and relaunched them under the umbrella brand name “Esko Software Platform”. The full range of innovations and integrations of the enhanced Esko Software Platform will be demonstrated for the first time at drupa 2016, and will be commercially available beginning of June 2016. Highlights of the drupa release of the Esko Software Platform include more software modules made available as Software as a Service (SaaS) and subscriptions, and improved 3D support, especially when viewing objects in WebCenter and on mobile devices. Esko will also be introducing a new
flexo plate UV LED exposure device. This device combines UV main and back exposure in a single operation: the XPS Crystal 5080. A new digital flexo plate imager, based on CDI technology, will also be introduced: the CDI Crystal 5080. Both devices can be connected as one single device, the CDI Crystal 5080 XPS, thus combining plate imaging and exposing into a single operation. This solution supposedly cuts the number of manual handling steps by 50% compared to other technologies and reduces the time needed to produce a press-ready plate by almost 70%.
Enfocus (Hall 08b) Enfocus recently announced the availability of the Enfocus Appstore, a co-creation platform where users and developers of Enfocus Switch could share their knowledge and work. At drupa 2016, Enfocus will be demonstrating the range of flows that can be created using apps from this community-created resource. The Switch Community is comprised of Switch specialists, including users, integrators and Channel Partners, from around the globe. If a user is interested in an app, he or she can download it and try it free for one month. If he or she likes the application, it can be purchased on a subscription basis. The last printed issue of The Independent The final print edition of The Independent has been sent to press, as the title moves to a digital-only format. The Independent on Sunday launched in 1990, with Stephen Glover as editor. The final Sunday edition was published last week. They are part of the group owned by the Lebedev family, who have other media assets including the Evening Standard and local TV station London Live. Current paid circulation at the daily title is just over 40,000 while its Sunday sister sells just under 43,000 copies.
The paper's last front page features an exclusive story about a British connection in a plot to kill a Saudi king and a striking image of train passengers being evacuated during an anti-terrorism operation in Brussels. Inside the paper, which was founded in 1986 under the slogan "It is. Are you?", four special-edition magazines look back at its history. Copies of the final print edition of The Independent on Sunday sit on a stand outside a newsagents in Soho, London, on March 20. Journalists for the daily paper posted photos of their final hours working on the print edition and showed editor Amol Rajan giving a speech to a crowded newsroom after it was sent to press for the last time. Owners Alexander and Evgeny Lebedev announced last month that The Independent and The Independent on Sunday would drop their print versions. Look to the Future with Muller Martini Hybrid print products are the future. That is why Muller Martini, in line with the buzzword of Finishing 4.0, will demonstrate live at its drupa booth in Hall 2 how variable magazines and books are produced using a fully connected, highly automated machine line-up consisting of sheetfed offset, web offset and digital printing elements. Offset and digital printing of magazines and books is one thing, the efficient print finishing of hybrid products is another. With its key drupa topic of Finishing 4.0, Muller Martini will demonstrate in Düsseldorf how signatures from both printing methods can be processed according to a smart workflow on a day-today basis. Hundreds of copies of over 20 different print products will be produced live each day using no fewer than nine connected systems to demonstrate the concepts of smart automation and touchless workflow. To enable hybrid products, the print finishing systems must naturally be digital ready. Muller Martini systems have met that requirement for many years. Numerous further developments and new developments will be presented at drupa in all segments (saddle stitchers, perfect binders, thread sewing machines and booklines), such as a brand-new solution for the three-sided trimming of softcover books in ultra-short runs. That will underline Muller Martini’s
position as a market leader and innovation leader, and provide visitors to the booth with a glimpse of the future of print finishing. With Finishing 4.0, Muller Martini will demonstrate at drupa 2016 in Hall 2 at Booth A49 how variable magazines and books can be produced using a fully connected, highly automated machine line-up consisting of sheetfed offset, web offset and digital printing elements. The complex hybrid products at the Muller Martini booth will include a bilingual “in-flight magazine”, which will be produced sequentially in sets of four copies, with varying page counts, in A4 size using the Presto II Digital saddle stitcher. Since hybrid products are not limited to saddle stitching and are gaining in importance in the softcover segment – especially when it comes to high-quality customized business reports and school materials in the B2B segment – Muller Martini will also present the relevant perfect binding solutions. For instance, a
digitally printed book block will be produced using the SigmaLine and fed using the book block feeder to the Alegro perfect binder, which will be showcased in a new digital version at drupa. The hybrid softcover product will be finished with offset signatures that are fed via the gathering machine. Canon hosts first Photo-to-Print Seminar in Asia The seminar is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia that caters specifically to photolabs in the region. Sha Jumari reports. Canon Singapore recently concluded the Photo-to-Print Seminar targeted at printers specialised in the photo printing space. Held at its regional headquarters in Singapore on 14 April 2016, the event attracted visitors all across the Southeast Asian region. At the close of the event, Canon reported an impressive attendance of 65 visitors from the region, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore. “This is the first time in the region that we’re holding such an event for photolabs. We don’t talk too much about our products, we present more on the current print markets and
trends, because this is what the visitors want,” said Bob Endert, senior director for Canon’s professional production printing division. The seminar followed the success of Canon’s Asian edition of the Book Publishing Forum, which wrapped up a couple of months back. This time round, the one-day event focused on helping photolabs explore new business opportunities. Amongst seminar highlights include presentations on key industry trends and findings in the photo printing and commercial printing areas. Thanh Thanh Photo, a Vietnamese photolab, also took the stage to present its journey from silver halide to digital printing. “I think that’s what makes this event a success. It’s all about sharing data and knowledge that Canon has access to with the customers so that they can make better business decisions,” Endert continued.
The seminar included a presentation of the Amendo software from OneVision Software AG Germany, which specialises on providing maximum automation in photo optimisation and workflow. A quick demo of the Amendo software showcased its ability to enhance images in just four seconds. Live demos of Canon’s presses were also organised, with special attention on the Canon DreamLabo 5000, the company’s flagship press for high definition production photo printing. 4R photo printing used to be the crux of a photolab’s business model. With the advent of technology and social media, the 4R photo method of collecting memories became obsolete. That is, until photobooks for the masses gained traction, and presented a whole new way of reliving experiences. As cameras improve, customers become more astute and demand more out of photo print quality. “There’s an opportunity in the photo printing industry and it’s important to realise what’s going on in the market. For photolabs all over the world, 4R printing is declining. Those who don’t change their business will eventually experience this decline. However, there are opportunities elsewhere, like in photobooks. This is where we come in,” said Endert.

The event merged Canon’s digital presses with its other successful tangent – cameras. One of the highlights was a photography session to drive home the differentiating message of highdefinition photobook printing. “The most important thing that we want our visitors today to takeaway is that we will have a very bright future, in our products and solutions. For Canon, this seminar is important to show customers new business opportunities, but it’s also important to follow up with the customers,” said Noriko Gunji, newly-appointed executive vice president of Canon Singapore. The Canon DreamLabo 5000 will be on display at the Canon booth at drupa 2016. Canon will be organising activities at the booth for its Asian customers, as well as customer site visits in and out of Düsseldorf. The Trendsetters: Thanh Thanh Photo Thanh Thanh Photo, a family-run photolab in Vietnam, started out with silver halide photo production. Traditionally, the Hanoi-based company produced images for the wedding and baby photo industry. In 2011, Thanh Thanh purchased its first Canon Arizona and successfully expanded their business to include school yearbooks and advertising printing. In 2015, Thanh Thanh invested in the Canon DreamLabo to produce its photobooks.

Since the company began marketing the new Dreamlabo print to their customers, Pham estimated about 100 of their existing customers have signaled high interest. Some customers have already switched to the new prints. Noticeably, most of them comprise of younger customers in their early 20s to early 30s.
“In the last five years, the photobook industry in Vietnam has been on the rise. It’s a big market for Vietnam, where a lot of people are going for photobooks instead of 4R printing. They’re finding that it is more convenient to do a photobook and the quality keeps getting better,” Pham said. With the purchase of the DreamLabo, Thanh Thanh hopes to set the trend in Vietnam’s photobook industry by being the one of the first two to produce high definition photobook prints, particularly for weddings and yearbooks. Pham explained that typically, at the end of the school year, each student would receive the same yearbook. In Vietnam however, the trend is to have one personalised book for each class. “As market leaders in Vietnam’s photobook scene, we see ourselves as trendsetters. Customisation is just one of the trends that we set in Vietnam. Before us, there were not much options for customisation, so customers were not specifically asking for it. That is also the reason why we first purchased the Canon Oce Arizona, so that we could print on album covers, on wood, aluminium, and a variety of other

It helps that Thanh Thanh Photo is setting the price point of prints produced by the DreamLabo 5000 at just 10 to 20% higher than what it was before. Pham added that the price increase only covers the increase in production cost, and not to make profit. He hopes that this will help customers adjust better to the gradual price increase. “It’s said that printing is a sunset industry. We don’t agree with this. Photo printing is a sunrise industry,” said Pham. “We’ve seen an increase in total revenue from the customers and we have year on year growth of 10%. With the Arizona and Dreamlabo 5000, we have managed to capture up to 90% of all high-end market in the wedding, baby and student photos.”

The Fujifilm Jet Press 540W, installed in December 2015, has proved the perfect investment to help to grow this side of the business. The investment came after more than a year spent testing a variety of machines from a range of suppliers. “We weren’t just looking for a new press,” explains Szymon Symonowicz, Interak’s Technical Director. “We wanted an ongoing partnership with a supplier to help drive our business forward. It was the confidence we felt in Fujifilm’s ability to meet those requirements as much as the capabilities of the machine itself that led us to make the decision we did. On both counts we’ve been very impressed – Fujifilm’s ongoing service since installation has been exemplary and the
machine has more than lived up to the promise it showed during our trials.” Unlike a conventional web offset press, where printing sizes are limited by the size of the plate cylinder, the Fujifilm Jet Press 540W uses direct data printing, so there is much more flexibility in the cut-off size of the paper. It can accommodate a wider variety of jobs, while remaining highly efficient for standard jobs that utilise the same paper size. Driven by XMF workflow, one of the most comprehensive and advanced production management systems on the market, the Jet Press 540W can be easily integrated with a range of post-press solutions. It also opens up a range of new business opportunities by enabling the combination of short-run and variable data capabilities, making it ideal for the production of leaflets, magazines, educational textbooks, manuals and newspapers. Symonowicz agrees: “It’s an excellent machine for printing both roll to roll and roll to sheet. Its productivity, at 127 metres per minute, is superb, and we have found it remarkably easy to operate. It is also ideally suited to low-volume book printing – an area of the business we expect to grow even more rapidly in the coming years, and it has freed up a lot of space on our litho platforms, significantly increasing our capacity across the business as a whole.” Fujifilm has used all its knowledge and experience to develop inks for use with this press which, when combined with its ultra-compact footprint, maximise the application flexibility and versatility of the machine. The VIVIDIA WP-S pigment ink range features a wider colour gamut, suffers from less 'see through' on the page and can be used in nearly all graphic applications, using either normal
offset or inkjet optimised paper types. This ink range, developed specifically to deliver superb image quality, allows high-density images to be printed at high speed, with reduced ink transfer from sheet to sheet, and with high-quality reproduction possible even on thin paper. The Jet Press 540W also utilises Fujifilm’s own screening technology, based on FM screening, which delivers smooth colours and sharp text. “We’ve found the quality of the Jet Press 540W to be exceptional,” says Symonowicz, “I think a lot of people have yet to realise just how far inkjet technology has come in the past few years. There is still a tendency among some to presume they will always get better quality with offset – but when it comes to a machine like the Jet Press, that isn’t necessarily the case anymore. The feedback we have received for the jobs printed on this machine since installation has been very positive indeed. Inkjet is the future, we’re certain of that, and our customers are increasingly coming to that view as well.” Says Wieland Schwarz, Marketing and Sales Manager at Fujifilm: “We’re delighted that Interak selected Fujifilm as a partner for this investment.
