Next generation workflow system wins FUJIFILM announces its next generation hybrid workflow system, “FUJIFILM WORKFLOW XMF” (XMF), has been awarded Japan’s popular and highly rated ‘Good Design Award’ 2012.

XMF was originally released to worldwide markets in 2007, and reflecting feedback from users has continuously been expanded and upgraded so that it is now one of the most comprehensive print production systems on the market, with over 3,500 installations worldwide. The workflow solution now consists of “XMF Workflow” (for managing print production) and “XMF Remote” (the web-based system for remote job submission and approval), with the system being configurable to meet a wide range of requirements. All XMF solutions are intuitive and easy-to-understand thanks to the simple and functional Graphical User Interface (GUI). This design has been based on research and feedback from many printing companies, with the result that the system is easy to use for even inexperienced operators, which contributes to a shorter training period and operational standardisation at user sites.

XMF also helps maximise operational efficiencies through its ability to customise functions to match users’ preferences, so the time taken to perform key operations can be drastically reduced. Understanding that many operators will be continuously monitoring the workflow, XMF’s colour scheme has been designed to be less stressful on the eye.

The web-based supporting system, “XMF Remote”, allows remote proofing over the internet, bringing benefits in terms of eliminating the need to produce physical proofs and streamlining the actual collaborative approvals process. This means XMF contributes not only to streamlining the proofing process, but also to reducing waste and saving resources. This “excellent functionality” and “contribution to society and environment” were highly rated, and were part of the reason for the system winning the “Good Design Award”. One of the judges commented: “The objective of this workflow system is to streamline the print process. The major reason for winning the award is its system and user interface, designed for efficient operation by various types of users involved, such as clients who order print jobs, designers who create materials, and operators in printing company, etc. Its simple and functional user interface design is a good example of the industrial user interface of the future.”

Digital Technology

The Nanographic Printing Process ™

Combining the versatility and short-run economics of digital printing with the qualities and productivity of offset printing. In May 2012, Benny Landa – inventor of the Indigo Digital Press – brought news of a breakthrough that may greatly advance print technology and its related economics. Since then, the blogosphere already has articles suggesting that this could be the biggest change in printing since Gutenberg invented the printing press. Nanographic Printing™ technology, also called Nanography, differs from other printing technologies because it uses an innovative system and printing process that employs Landa NanoInk™, a proprietary water-based ink with nano-pigment particles that measure tens of nanometres in size. Unlike lithography, Nanographic Printing™ technology harnesses the advantages of digital printing, including shorter turnaround times, reduced waste, the ability to print runs as short as one copy, as well as variable data printing. At the same time, it also offers offset qualities. Whereas inkjet printing jets transfer the image directly onto the substrate,

Fig 2. A schematic perspective view of a Landa Nanographic Printing™ Press.

Nanography™ first ejects the Landa NanoInk dispersions onto a unique heated blanket, and only then is the ink transferred from the blanket to the substrate in the form of an ultra-thin film. This document demonstrates how Nanography achieves the combined versatility and short-run economics of digital printing with the qualities and productivity of offset printing.

Introduction In the printing market, 98% of the pages are not printed using digital technology, but use technology that is essentially 500 years old. One of the main reasons is because when modern digital printing processes apply ink directly to paper, the wet ink penetrates the paper and many of the pigment particles end up beneath the surface

Digital Technology becoming inefficient absorbers of light. Additionally, when multiple colours are printed on top of each other, there is a limit to the amount of wet ink that can be applied to the paper. This maximum threshold is referred to as either TIC (Total Ink Coverage) or TAC (Total Area Coverage). Any ink applied beyond such limit does not attach itself to the previous layers and more significantly, the wet ink is not able to dry properly on the substrate. This can lead to ink smudging of the subsequent printed sheets. This is true for all printing processes, from offset to inkjet. In the case of inkjet printing, there is so much water in the ink that the paper becomes completely saturated, swollen, deformed and cockled. The paper must then be heated and the water evaporated from the paper. This limits aqueous inks to low area coverage applications, such as books and transpromotional materials – and makes it unsuitable for high area coverage applications such as commercial printing, packaging or for specific applications in the publishing sector, such as magazines or colourful books. The Nanographic difference The Landa Nanographic PrintingTM process is innovative in that it utilises the nano-sized pigments to absorb much more light than other pigments, and thus permits images with ultra-sharp dots of extremely high uniformity, high gloss fidelity and a broad CMYK colour gamut – covering at least 15% more Pantone colours than offset printing. Many of the advantages of the Landa Nanographic Printing process are achieved by eliminating the absorption of the liquid ink carrier by the substrate. In addition, the ultra-small Landa NanoInk pigments – and their ability to form a very thin layer of ink – allow digital printing at very high speeds; the ability to print on ordinary untreated paper stocks, whether coated or uncoated; and on practically any plastic packaging film or label stock; and the production of abrasion- and scratchresistant images. Landa NanoInk™ Many materials, when reduced to

Fig 3. Ink droplets interacting with the blanket following impact and carrier evaporation (illustration).

nano particle size, acquire unexpected properties. Some particles become super-hard, able to protect surfaces from abrasion; some become superabsorbent in the blood stream, enabling unique drug delivery systems. In the course of a decade of research, Landa observed that ink pigments, when reduced to nanometric scale, become unusually powerful colourants (Fig. 1). On the basis of this discovery, NanoInk colourants are used at the core of the Landa Nanographic Printing™ process. Landa NanoInk™ contains ultrasmall pigment particles in the tens of nanometres in size. In comparison, good quality offset inks have a particle size of approximately 500 nm — at least ten times larger. NanoInk is waterbased and ecofriendly. The Nanographic Printing process The Nanographic Printing process begins with the jetting of billions of droplets. However the droplets are not ejected directly onto the substrate as they are in the traditional inkjet process. Instead, they are ejected onto a blanket from ink ejectors that are mounted on print bars, onto a blanket positioned 1-2 mm away. Each print bar prints a specific colour. Landa Nanographic Printing Presses are equipped with eight print bars (Fig. 2) and are therefore capable of printing up to eight different colours simultaneously. Furthermore, the eight print bars can be employed for CMYK, spot or speciality colours such as white. The eight print bar configuration allows having two colour bars for each colour,

which in combination with doubling the paper handling system speed, allows doubling the productivity while maintaining the print quality. The ink drop ejection onto the blanket is precisely timed to obtain very high accuracy between print separations and achieve high colour plane registration. As each ink droplet lands on the heated blanket, it spreads and very quickly loses its water, becoming thinner as it does so. When all of its water has been evaporated, the ink becomes an ultra-thin, dry polymeric film on the blanket (Fig. 3). When pressed into contact with the printing substrate upon transfer, this thin 500 nm layer of ink instantaneously bonds tenaciously to the substrate without penetrating it (Fig. 4). The formed images are tough, abrasion resistant, do not need post-drying and leave no residual ink on the blanket. So two-sided printing becomes simple – and the printed output can immediately be processed, even on the most aggressive finishing equipment, right off the press. The transfer blanket The design of the optimum blanket and blanket conveyor system embodies some critical considerations to ensure perfect image, including the full image transfer to the paper, the prevention of any ink residuals, and smooth and stable blanket motion. The design enables a suitable balance between receiving the Landa NanoInk drops, permitting them to create a

perfect image, and concurrently allows the transfer of the ink film to the various substrate types without leaving a trace on the blanket. This ensures that the full image is transferred without any distortions and the blanket remains completely clean – ready to receive the next image ejection. The difference in the dots Inkjet-printed dots are typically characterised by poorly defined edges. This effect is due to the capillarity of the aqueous ink that causes it to be absorbed and wicked along the paper fibers. Offset printed dots are generally sharper than inkjet, but also suffer from edge raggedness due to ink capillarity. As mentioned, the Landa NanoInk droplets form a dry ink film when applied to the paper or other

substrates – and unlike directly applied wet inks, there is no penetration into the paper fibers. So the Landa NanoInk film does not wick along the paper fibers. Instead, it conforms to the surface roughness, right down to the topography of individual paper fibers, literally laminating the paper surface and therefore permitting precise and extremely efficient low ink laydown. This accounts for the ability of the Nanographic Printing technology to match the gloss of the paper and to produce dots with super-sharp edges and high optical uniformity. As a result, dots obtained using the Landa Nanographic Printing process are exceptionally round (Fig. 5). Extended colour gamut The Landa Nanographic Printing

process breaks through yet another barrier. Because the Landa NanoInk pigments are extremely small, the light dynamic range achieved by the Landa NanoInk formulation in the Nanographic Printing process is wider than any other printing processes and covers more Pantone colors than offset printing. This translates into bigger effective gray levels. (Fig. 6). Additionally, Nanography and Landa NanoInk create printed solid areas with lightness depth (density) values incomparable to any other printing process technology. High gloss uniformity Another amazing outcome of the very thin effective layer created in the Nanographic Printing process is the fact that the images have extremely

soaked paper. - Substrate cost – Printing on any substrate enables you to print on lowcost, off-the-shelf uncoated paper rather than expensive coated paper or specially designed paper. - Production logistics – Landa NanoInk is manufactured and shipped as a concentrated solution that reduces packaging, shipment and storage costs. The combination of Landa NanoInk and the Nanographic Printing process, allows digital production at up to 13,000 B1 sheets per hour for sheetfed and 200 metres per minute for webfed presses. This is an improvement of nearly 100% over other digital printing processes that will significantly boost the productivity of a company’s digital business.

high gloss fidelity with the substrate printed on. That means glossy images on glossy stock, and matte images on matte stock – all while maintaining the highest image qualities such as optical density, dot shape and others. In contrast, images printed on a dry toner electrophotographic press display the same gloss regardless of the gloss level of the printed media. The gloss differences between the printed area and the background are irritating to the human eye and are perceived as low-quality printing. Media friendly The ultra-thin Nanographic Printing ink film has an extraordinary ability to bond to all paper and plastic printing substrates. Due to the above described transfer technique, Landa NanoInk images can easily be applied to a wide range of sheet or web substrates, including untreated paper stock – coated or uncoated, plastic, newsprint, film and more. As the ink film contains no water or other liquids, Nanography preserves the substrate from both water damage and deformation.

With Nanographic Printing technology, the substrate remains dry, and since very low heat is applied to the paper surface, it maintains the substrate’s pure qualities. The Nanographic Printing economic advantage The Nanographic Printing process offers the capacity to yield the lowest cost-per-page of all the digital printing technologies. This is due to a variety of aspects relating to its underlying technology. They include: - The ink carrier – Landa NanoInk solutions are based on water which is a less costly ink carrier than any solvent or UV based inks. - The amount of ink used – The Landa Nanographic Printing process creates a film of about 500 nm that is approximately half the thickness of an offset printed image and uses less ink for the same image. - Energy consumption – The Nanographic Printing process is energy efficient and heating is used mainly to evaporate the limited amount of water in the ink rather than to dry out water-

Conclusion The Nanographic Printing™ process is a new technology and opens up a new category of printing. It uniquely combines a special printing process with water-based Landa NanoInk™ colourants and a specially designed transfer blanket. With the productivity, substrate range, and print qualities of offset and a break-even point of around 5000 sheets, Nanography™ is the first digital printing process that can compete in the mainstream market. As printing shifts from offset to digital, printers will not be able to sustain growth into the future with offset alone. Nanography addresses the principal obstacles faced by digital technology today, including speed, quality and cost and can fundamentally change the print industry.

Reduced marketing budgets open new markets for CEO Customers generally dislike waiting but not without valid reasons. It’s this time sensitivity that caused Niroon Buddhasiri, CEO of Sri Lanka-based Leaf d Private Limited, to capitalise on the fast turnaround offered by digital printing with the added benefit of personalisation. Christel Lee reports.

of our first Canon imagePRESS C1+ – also the first in Sri Lanka. Today, we are satisfied with the quality of our goods,” Niroon adds. The installation of this high-speed press placed Leaf d Private Limited on first-choice options as they are the ones able to deliver within hours, and with personalisation. “Concepts have become so time-sensitive that marketers cannot afford to remain static for their campaigns; customers will be constantly changing their collaterals to address the fluid needs of the market,” he notes. Another advantage that won Niroon over was the elimination of delays for sampling. He stresses, “Our customers are used to having sampling for checks and having offset-like quality is imperative. Traditional offset press sampling has caused massive delays, which piles up the cost. With this new powerful press, customers can receive samples with their desired quality almost immediately.” Marketing collaterals have traditionally been static for many enterprises due to the largest projected margin from mass markets. However, when the novelty of a certain product shows signs of diminishing, marketers have no choice but to re-explore other options. That naturally leads to addressing the uniqueness and preferences of every consumer in order to compensate for lack of interest. One of the markets dominated by offset printing is Sri Lanka – due to its large population and GDP. However, Niroon, who helms Leaf d Private Limited, took the plunge to venture into new territory. A veteran of 15 years experience in

the game, he shares: “We have seen the commercial printing industry transitioning towards digital. We have paved the path to digital and were also the first to invest in a technologicallyadvanced paper converting plant in 2002, which included two brand new sheeting machines. It was an advantage that led to cost savings and enabled us to have an edge over the export competition.” “In 2008, we observed the struggle facing printers concerning print finishing, which resulted in a bottle neck for the entire production process. The following year, printers faced the challenges of sampling and shorter runs-on-demand. That led to the entry

In a nutshell, Canon is one press seller who certainly understands the needs of their customers. That renders effective addressing of business challenges and places Leaf d Private Limited in an optimum position in the competitive industry. Niroon concludes, “Canon is like a business partner, they provide me the support and consultation in my business. Lastly, Metropolitan supports to get this project off ground.” Niroon Buddhasiri is endowed with 15 years of scientific and empirical knowledge in printing. Presently he is the CEO / Managing Director of Leaf d Private Limited, Ranpath Paper Private Limited, Ranpath Coating Systems Private Limited and Rosstia Pty Limited Australia.

Solving a problem in process costs for electronic components A recent innovation from Schreiner ProTech, based on advanced self-adhesive label technology has brought significant cost and time savings for manufacturers of electronic goods – and won recognition in a prestigious international labelling competition. Sensitive parts in today’s many electronic devices require careful finishing treatment by the manufacturer before they can be added to the finished product. They must be protected from the ingress of dirt, moisture, and salt spray to ensure that they will function properly, and they must carry a barcoded nameplate – usually a specially-developed self-adhesive label construction – which must last the life of the product – for identification and authentication purposes. These postproduction activities are essential but time-consuming and costly, and often involve hand assembly, particularly on smaller components. An integrated solution Schreiner ProTech – a business unit within the multi-disciplinary Schreiner Group, Oberschleissheim, Germany – which focuses on high-technology solutions based on self-adhesive labelling, has found the answer. The company has developed an integrated solution that combines both the pressure compensation seal (PCS) and the durable self-adhesive nameplate into a single laminate, delivered on a roll, for automatic or manual application to the electronic component. This special laminate does not in any way compromise the performance of either PCS or nameplate durability. Conversely, the system is today delivering significant reductions in both time and cost for manufacturers of electronic devices in, for example, the automotive, consumer electronics, electrical goods, and medical markets.

How the self-adhesive laminate contributes The self-adhesive label laminate, combining a face material, adhesive layer, and release-coated protective liner, is a versatile product that allows choices at every label. The Schreiner ProTech nameplate-integrated pressure compensation seals employ a printed film membrane as the face, partnered with an adhesive chosen for optimal performance on the component’s substrate (metal, medium- and lowsurface energy plastics such as HDPE and polycarbonates). To ensure reliable ventilation performance for the PCS and optimal printability of the durable label, Schreiner ProTech’s BleedStop technology – which controls the flow of the thick layer of adhesive necessary for durable label applications on what are often rough or irregular surfaces – is added to the adhesive layer. The laminate is completed with a reliable backing liner whose silicone coating allows the PCS-cum-nameplate to be smoothly and accurately positioned on the substrate via an automatic or handheld dispenser. International standards and compliances Schreiner ProTech consults closely with customers to define and meet specific needs – including meeting international standards and compliances such as REACH, RoHS, IMDS, WEEE, and UL and CSA certification. The printed message on the nameplate is the guarantee of a product’s safety and authenticity, so its printability, durability, and legibility (both by scanner and by the naked eye)

Jules Lejeune, Managing Director FINAT

are also essential. Schreiner ProTech nameplates also meet this requirement, and may be supplied to the component manufacturer either as pre-printed or blank labels for subsequent individual on-site printing.

It is primarily aimed at ensuring inclusive growth by providing a form of identity to those who do not have one.

The programme has already captured 200 million identities, making it by far the biggest database of its type in the world. Each of these IDs also requires a printed, laminated, fourcolour document with a photograph, information on the person, the ID number, barcodes and a QR code. That’s where Manipal Technologies plays a key role. “This enormous project requires high levels of reliability and security. Our heritage in the banking industry coupled with our size made us the ideal partner for UIDAI,” explains Gautham Pai, managing director at Manipal Technologies. “However, we needed to ensure we had a print platform that could handle the sheer volume while also ensuring the highest quality.” Founded in 1941, the Manipal Group is headquartered in Manipal, India and has diversified business interests that span the publishing and media sectors,

as well as financial, healthcare and educational institutions. Manipal Group is also India’s largest private health care provider and owns India’s largest

private university, Manipal University. Central to this diverse group is Manipal Technologies, which had its humble origins in the back office of

Syndicate Bank. Manipal Technologies has evolved from a security print products manufacturer to the preferred Outsourced Service Partner for the Indian banking industry. It has 6,000 employees and is split in two divisions: one which handles branding and marketing communications and one which provides security and transaction solutions. Capturing a billion identities Manipal typically provides its marketing customers with commercial promotional material, including direct mail, brochures and packaging. On the security side of the business, Manipal provides debit cards, ticketing and other more specialised print solutions. The company’s experience in this area made it a prime potential partner for the most ambitious government ID programme ever attempted anywhere in the world. Speed, quality and reliability Manipal Technologies has been using HP Indigo Digital Presses since 2008. The HP Indigo technology had proven reliable, flexible and fast – the precise qualities needed for the ID project to provide short-run book prints, photo books and customised products such as degree certificates and sports tickets. “HP is at the heart of our printing operations. The print quality provided by the HP Indigo Presses is exceptional, but our relationship with HP is also a key factor. It is a true long-term partnership in which we collaborate closely,” adds Pai. “That’s why we knew HP would be the best fit for this sensitive, confidential project. The HP Indigo Presses can deliver the requisite quality in colour and at speed, and HP as a company can provide the support to ensure that the job is never compromised.”

Manipal Technologies is using three HP Indigo Digital Presses to produce on average 340,000 ID documents every day. Each document contains a photo of the person, requiring excellent print quality. With so many individually customised documents being printed daily, the presses also must be reliable and provide maximum uptime. The sheer volume of data and the fact that the documents might be printed in different fonts and any of nine languages, pose additional challenges. “Working with the government can be challenging but our experience with the ID programme has been great because the HP Indigo Presses are enabling us to meet our agreed objectives,” comments Pai. “The flexibility of our HP printers has allowed us to adapt to different languages and designs easily, while providing the robust reliability to handle the high volumes of material. This is in part thanks to the in-house workflow solution we developed for data validation, processing and GMC application to produce final print-ready PDFs in multiple languages.”

A digital future With the ID programme on schedule to register all of India’s nearly one billion citizens within the next few years, Manipal Technologies is confident that HP technology will continue to play a vital role. Pai also expects his overall digital print business will continue to grow, as the benefits become more apparent and costs continue to decline. “Four years ago, 20 per cent of our business was digital; that has now risen to 50 per cent and I am in no doubt that it will continue to grow. Digital printing is a cost-effective way of providing the customised, highquality print solutions that the market is increasingly demanding. It is also more environmentally friendly than traditional offset printing,” concludes Pai. “We always look at what value we can create beyond what’s currently available. We work with HP because for us innovation is key and HP is a very innovative company. It is also very reliable. They deliver what they say they will deliver and we are the same.”

First H-UV Lithrone in Korea Sang-Choel Lee is President of Seon Myeong C&P, a printing company located in a new apartment-style shop in the centre of Chungmuro, Jung-gu, the district of Seoul thronged with printers that is the heart of the South Korean printing industry. Consisting of 35 employees, Seon Myeong C&P recorded a turnover last year of 4.2B South Korean won (approximately US$3.7M), making it a printer of middle standing in the industry. With the addition of the LS526, the company forecasts revenues of 6B won this year. Setting a new course In managing this growing company, Mr Lee gives top priority to providing the quality required by his customers, developing new design techniques and print capabilities, and cultivating human resources. The printer is undergoing a transformation from its focus on printing brochures with its existing digital printers to a business model that concentrates on commercial printing and packaging using the LS-526 acquired in April. To leverage its new design competence, the printer is striving to build a system whose cornerstone is production and quick turnaround. It is also aiming to secure work in the field of customised catalogs to meet today’s diverse market needs.

In January 2000, he bought out the copy shop that had been run by his older sister and launched his own business. Until recently, his company has primarily used an “all-in-one” platform of high-quality digital printers and integrated finishing equipment to print short-run booklet and brochures for customers.

Now, however, Seon Myeong C&P offers a full range of printing services, including planning, design, printing, output and quality control. And thanks to a new CTP system and the H-UVequipped five-colour Lithrone S26 press installed this April, it is able to provide high-volume commercial printing services.

Lithrone S26+H-UV and a visit to Japan In 2011 Lee began to consider investment in a new press. After intensively comparing Komori machines with those from Heidelberg and other leading press manufacturers, he decided to invest in the latest H-UV-equipped five-colour Lithrone S26 because of the advanced level of H-UV technology. Following up on his decision, he visited Komori’s Tsukuba Plant in Japan. What immediately impressed him was the modern environment and

Sheetfed Offset 21 systems of Komori’s factory, Komori’s passion for excellence in its endeavors, and the company’s dedication to environmentally-friendly production. On this trip, Lee also visited two Nagoya printers who were running H-UV-equipped presses. Lee says, “Although these Nagoya printers were small, what I admired most about them was that they had a production system that could meet the specific requirements of their customers rather than just producing standardised items. Their presses were fully automated and specified with options such as Full-APC and the PDC-SII density control system and their production environment was extremely clean. Their employees thoroughly embraced a spirit of service, being courteous and helpful to all customers who came to the shop.” Opening the door to new business “We installed the Komori H-UV press and were immediately impressed – the drying results were excellent when printing on a wide range of materials, enabling us to provide added value printing. The outstanding drying performance meant that processing was shortened. But even more important, due to the Lithrone’s superb printing on a range of materials, we were able to develop new products, acquire Japanese customers and begin exporting. Previously when our regular customers required short turnaround, we found that even if printing goes well, problems can occur if the products are damaged in the finishing stage. Once we began using the LS-526 with H-UV, we enjoyed the tremendous advantage of passing printed work immediately to finishing with complete consistency and no risk of damage. Turnaround itself was greatly shortened. Orders from our customers for 500 to 2,000 copies that must be delivered in two or three days constitute nearly all of our work. With the LS526+H-UV, meeting these deadlines is no problem at all. And thanks to the benefits in terms of print quality – being able to print on heavy and special papers – the press has opened the door to new liens of business for us. We are putting our energy into developing products that use special papers and packaging items,” adds Lee.

Targets come into focus President Lee describes his sense of security with the Komori team: “I’ve been very satisfied with the support that we were given – veteran specialists from Komori and Toyo Ink, the H-UV ink supplier, were dispatched to our facility to train us and help us achieve stable operation quickly, even though ours was the first H-UV machine introduced in South Korea and we did need a short time to get used to the machine. Once the press was commissioned and began regular operation, we got an immediate response from Komori or Iljin PMS, their dealer in Korea, around the clock whenever there was any problem.” Lee plans to develop powerful printed products that meet market needs as package solutions and also increase export work. He intends to install a larger press, develop packaging products and build a production system that provides a large number

of product types and lot sizes while utilizing online package solutions. Although developing package designs is definitely not easy, he also aims to build a web-to-print system that would permit customers to select size and quality and then order online and receive the items by the specified delivery deadline. This system would be able to accommodate very small orders – fewer than 100 copies. Lee concludes: “Individual areas such as prepress, press and postpress are disappearing. In other words, we have entered an era where the integrated printing group that offers total solutions has the competitive edge. Our industry must make preparations for this set of circumstances. I think that is why it was a good idea that Komori developed the digital systems that work together with OffsetOnDemand. Printers that rely on offset as their foundation must not be limited to offset,” Lee concludes.

Leading Indian packaging printers receive new presses The time when Indian packaging printers invested predominantly in second-hand and less automated sheetfed offset presses is coming to an end. In recent months three leading and fast growing packaging companies have installed new medium-format sheetfed offset presses from KBA, among them two high-end Rapida 106s. Last year TCPL Packaging, one of the largest manufacturers of folding boxes in India, fired up a Rapida 106 with a Corona unit, six printing units, a coater and double delivery extension. TCPL currently owns four production plants – three in Silvassa in west India about 180km (112 miles) from Mumbai and one in Haridwar, near the city of Delhi. Every plant is DISO 9001:2008 and ISO 22000:2005 accredited and follows strict standards set for vendors of food packaging (BRC/IOP). Additionally, the plants in Silvassa are FSC certified. Alongside the production of packaging for food, spirits and cigarettes plus folding boxes for other areas of the consumer industry, TCPL claims to be the biggest exporter of printed carton in India. Its customers are primarily from the UK, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates and other countries.

Other automated features include DriveTronic SIS Sidelay-free infeed, automatic plate changers plus roller, blanket and impression cylinder washing units during ink changes (conventional and UV). Additionally, the Rapida 106 is equipped with DensiTronic Professional to monitor and control image quality. This highperformance press shares a pressroom with two Japanese sheetfed offset press lines and a sheetfed gravure press. The plant has also purchased a punching and folder-gluer from Bobst plus a unit for gluing windows from Heiber & Schröder. ITC also opted for a Rapida 106 with eight inking units, a coater and a delivery extension, which was delivered in June to ITC’s packaging plant in

It is split into divisions for consumer goods, board and packaging, and has a large amount of agriculture and hotels. ITC belongs to the largest packaging manufacturers in India. The company creates a huge range of packaging for the food and drink industry, cigarettes (alongside TCPL they are the biggest manufacturer of cigarette boxes in India), spirits and consumer goods from over 70,000 tonnes of paper, board and coated substrates a year. ITC’s customer base includes prominent brands such as Nokia, Colgate, Palmolive, Pernod Ricard, British American Tobacco, Philip Morris International and many others. The new Rapida 106 has gone live in a cutting-edge environment. It is equipped for UV mixed operation, has additional packages enabling board and film printing, is mounted on a 675mm plinth (26.6in) and is embedded in an automatic pile logistics system. DriveTronic SIS sidelay-free infeed, automatic plate changers and CleanTronic Multi automatic washing units during ink changes are just some of the additional automated units featured in this up to 18,000sph press. An emissions extraction system (EES) ensures a healthy work environment by eliminating process-related odours at the delivery/console. The Rapida 106 is networked with pre-press and management systems via a KBA LogoTronic workstation. Furthermore, DensiTronic Professional monitors and controls image quality online. The third big packaging manufacturer, which installed a new Rapida, is

Parksons mainly produces packaging for consumer goods, food and drink, the electronics industry plus pharmaceutical product packaging for the domestic market as well as global players. The company has three production plants – in Daman, Rudrapur and Pune. Production has already started at the plant in Daman on a KBA sheetfed offset press featuring cutting, punching and gluing units used to add the finishes touches to folding boxes. Every plant has its own ink kitchen enabling conventional and UV inks to be individually made. The two new Rapida 105 sheetfed offset presses which were delivered in spring 2012 meant that now the plants in Pune and Rudrapur have also benefitted from KBA sheetfed offset technology. Automatic plate changers, combined washing units for blanket, impression cylinders and rollers during ink changes, and non-stop facilities at the delivery are just some of the presses’ automated features. Additionally, the press features DensiTronic Professional to measure and control image quality. The Indian market is focusing increasingly on technology and is characterised by its awareness of quality, which is based on the global market. KBA is benefitting from this. Along with the press mentioned, KBA has delivered further presses to Indian printing companies. Additionally, follow-on orders placed by large printing houses will be shipped in 2013.

Thinking Outside, Inside, and All Around the Box While some segments of the print market have been declining, eroded by alternative means of communication, other segments are seeing growth. With recipients’ email inboxes overloaded, marketers will increase spending on printed direct mail—by up to 6% this year, according to marketing consultants Winterberry Group. Packaging is another growing market, presenting growth opportunities for printers of all sizes.

environmentally-friendly printing methods, stock, inks, and coatings. There is also a growing trend toward more biodegradable packaging, such as replacing plastic surrounds with paper wraps or cardboard sleeves on durable goods. Presstek DI presses offer an ideal solution for cost-effectively producing small lot size packaging and accompany point-of-purchase materials. Their ability to use a wide range of inks, including vegetable-based varieties, UV inks and protective varnishes, on stock up to 31 pt. thick, make DI presses well suited for production in this dynamic environment. For high volume printers and packaging converters, DI presses are a cost-effective solution for profitably meeting customers’ short-run and fast turnaround needs, and for printing small package components without burdening large presses and imposing on production schedules, or for producing test market materials or packaging mock-ups in short runs.

And it is not just large volume national brands driving the growth. Think about the explosion in micro-breweries and local wineries. These are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of “Buy Local” initiatives, private labeling and products from smaller companies that are driving lot sizes down and causing disruption in the packaging supply chain, which in many cases is not designed to cost-effectively handle these smaller lot sizes at the price level and quality manufacturers demand. Also keep in mind that where there is a package, there is a promotion. Point-of-purchase advertising, package inserts, peel-off coupons, and hang tags are just some of the collateral items associated with packaging that present opportunities for commercial printers, packaging converters and brand owners alike. And many of these

items can benefit from geographic, demographic, seasonal or other types of customization, further driving down lot sizes. At the same time, brand owners want and need packaging that will literally jump from the shelves into the shopping card. This includes the use of specialty stocks, fluorescent ink, metallic ink, varnishes, and aqueous coating to achieve distinction and shelf appeal. Multi-part packaging is also popular to increase both brand awareness and perceived product value. A personal care product packed in a labeled jar, wrapped in branded tissue paper, and placed in a folded carton, is a common example. In addition, the popularity of natural foods and personal care products has increased the demand for

DI press sizes accommodate the majority of the printed components commonly used in packaging, such as skin cards for blister packs, inserts for plastic clamshells, and the small folding cartons used in many industries. The 29-inch format Presstek 75DI handles larger folding cartons and facilitates multiple-up sheets and gang runs. Presstek 52DI and 75DI presses are available with inline aqueous coating. UV models are available in all format sizes. Digital production methods are rapidly making their way into the packaging supply chain visit Presstek in Booth 3117 to learn more about how high quality DI presses can augment operations for packaging converters or ease the entry into packaging for commercial printers.

Shopping OnLine with Heidelberg Heidelberg continues to lead the market as the only press manufacturer to offer its customers the ability to purchase consumables and spare parts online, and now this service is being extended across the Asia Pacific. The Heidelberg Online Shop (OLS) has proven a great success for the company since the first OLS opened in 2002 in Austria. Today there are 20 country-specific OLS in the Heidelberg global network with more than 10,000 customers benefitting from the convenience of shopping online at any time of the day or night. Mr. Glenn Plummer Senior Vice President Consumables and Pre Press – Asia Pacific said the simplicity of the OLS and the ability to place an order 24/7 has made the concept popular in both mature and developing markets. “These days consumers are very used to purchasing items online in their personal life. We’ve taken advantage of the trend in online shopping and made the Heidelberg OLS extremely easy to use, reducing the time it takes to order consumables, or even spare parts”. He says Heidelberg Asia is in the

process of rolling out the OLS across the region. Australia was the first country in Asia Pacific to institute the OLS in 2007 with Malaysia coming online shortly after. Since then the volume of consumables purchased online in those two countries has grown to represent more than 50 percent of the company’s consumables turnover in those markets. The global average for online consumables purchases, confirmed Mr. Plummer, is 45 percent. “At the end of 2011 we rolled out the OLS in Japan, Thailand and the Philippines and we are now in the process of bringing our last five countries in Asia Pacific online. By the end of November India, Indonesia, Singapore, Korea and Taiwan will all have their own dedicated OLS,” he said. Each OLS has been tailored to meet the specific needs of each country and all will feature fully integrated and automated ordering processes in the local language.

“One of the true benefits of the OLS is the customer shopping list,” said Mr. Plummer. “Our account managers will set up the account for the customer and customize a shopping list that reflects that business’s equipment and consumables needs. This means that customers can log on and select items from their tailored shopping list rather than having to browse through the entire catalogue searching for products. So for instance, if you use a CD102-4 colour, as an example, your shopping list will include the necessary blankets and rollers along with more generic products such as washes, ink, coating and founts.” He continued. “This feature has proven to be extremely popular because it saves time and ensures customers are using the right products to optimize their equipment. The customized shopping list is certainly one of the primary reasons why the OLS has been embraced by so many

Many countries also have the Heidelberg Advantage Program, which rewards customers with “Saphira Points” for every “dollar” spent. These loyalty points can be redeemed for Heidelberg services or gift vouchers. The OLS also provides useful, additional product information such as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), Technical Data sheets (TDS), brochures and hyperlinks. Mr. Plummer said the company had undertaken research to determine if customers in Asia Pacific were interested in shopping online. “We discovered that many of our customers are happy to shop online and certainly uptake has proven this to be correct”. Of course for those customers who don’t want to shop online orders can still be submitted by phone, fax or email.

of our customers worldwide.” Ordering online is secure as each user has their own log in and password and companies can easily keep track of inventory and usage patterns by being able to retrieve historical information on their account. The process inside Heidelberg is seamless with online

orders directly generating a pick slip in the local warehouse for goods to be dispatched – time from order to delivery for in-stock products is in the customer’s hands. Other benefits to OLS customers include specific promotions designed for the OLS, offers that are exclusive

In conclusion Mr. Plummer said, “Online shopping is so convenient and many customers have told us that they save time and money by being able to shop to their own schedule. Online shopping saves on having to phone orders in or write up faxes or emails, which in busy periods can mean having to wait on the phone, or for orders to be manually entered. I encourage our customers to talk with their account managers and set up an account. It doesn’t cost anything to start shopping online and I am sure they will immediately see the benefits”.

Thailand and India dominate AFTA Excellence Awards 2012 The AFTA Excellence Awards went for its 11th run on 22 November 2012. While the usual suspects bagged the usual accolades, one actually did the same for the fifth consecutive year. Christel Lee reports. At Singapore’s Resorts World Sentosa, some 300 guests from the flexographic industry in Asia congregated to witness not only the reinforcement of alreadyastounding standards in packaging, but also acknowledge new contenders who just might join the ranks of the elite in the game. Alf Carrigan, Chairman of the Independent Judging Committee, shared in his opening speech: “There are significant improvements in the print qualities of entries this year. The judges were heartened to see contenders taking more pride in their work; the time and effort spent to assess and place entries are nothing less than worthwhile.” Thailand and India dominated the ring with nine and seven wins respectively. India’s tightest contenders – Wintek Flexo Prints and Letra Graphix Pvt Ltd – have been vying for the top prizes for years. This time Wintek handed the Best in Show trophy to Letra Graphix. One Indonesian company, PT Bentoel Prima, went on stage for a record five times, scooping five wins out of six – the last going to PT. Industri Pembungkus Internasional. Sri Lanka

had two winners this year – Packages Lanka and Flexiprint. The latter is the second winner from the country to bag

an award in the competition. China’s Tetra Pak took (for the fifth time) Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Beverage Cartons and Cup category. Paul Callaghan, Chairman of the AFTA Excellence Awards Committee, commented: “Such results reflect their commitment to print excellence and I am happy for them.” Callaghan also took the chance to announce his impending retirement from chairing the Committee – declaring 2013 will be his last year in the game. The annual two-day Asian Flexo Conference will resume in 2013, to be held in Manila, Philippines.

Thailand soars with 32 wins at 10th Asian Print Awards 2012 In 2011, the Land of Smiles trailed behind China by one award. This year, it overtook the Republic with an astounding 32 awards. Hong Kong took second place with 12 awards. Christel Lee reports. This year the Asian Print Awards celebrated the 10th anniversary of the competition, where Asian contenders vie for the prestige and recognition of excellence in print. Some 500 industry professionals congregated at the Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore, for the annual Asian Print Awards Gala Night. Sirivatana Interprint PCL and Space One Co., Ltd (Thailand-based printers) each bagged three awards. One outstanding feature of Thailand’s report card this year was a total of 12 Silvers and 12 Bronzes. Sirivatana Interprint PCL won not only a Gold

in the category of Embellishment, but also Gold East Paper’s Judges’ Award.

Birds of America Soars at Asian Print Awards 2012 At the 10th anniversary for the competition, C & C Joint Printing Co., (H.K.) Ltd. beat hundreds of entries from Asia to win a Gold in category for Book Printing with their Birds of America. Additionally, the same entry also received Heidelberg’s trophy for Best in Sheetfed Offset Printing. C&C’s CEO, Mr. Jackson Leung, comments, “We are extremely pleased with our result in this competition. It’s a massive encouragement for us at C&C that we are on the right path – not only for our valued customers, but towards print excellence.” CEO of Heidelberg Asia, Rene Ludvigsen, comments: “C & C Joint Printing Co., (H.K.) Ltd. is one distinguished customer of ours and we are happy for them for their results at the competition. We extend our heartiest congratulations to them and look forward to their participation in the years to come.” The printing giant is a known fierce contender in the competition and never walks away without at least a couple of Gold medals. In the last competition, C&C won three Gold medals and Gold East Paper’s Judge’s Award (to name a few).

China, the Republic dominant on their own turf with offset, had wins for Dongguan Yinxin Printing Factory, Everbest Printing Co., Ltd and Toppan Leefung. Making Hong Kong extremely proud were big boys such as C & C Joint Printing (HK) Co., Ltd, Standard (Chan)’s Co., and Jinda Holographic Printing Company Limited. C & C Joint Printing (HK) Co., Ltd’s entry of Birds of America won not only a Gold in the category for Book Printing, but also Heidelberg’s Best in Sheetfed Offset Printing. This year’s event included the inaugural addition of a Digital Outdoor, Large Format & Signage Category. Hong Kong-based Standard (Chan)’s Co snagged a Gold, Singaporebased BusAds Pte Ltd in its maiden participation won a Silver, while renowned Indian printer Prince Digi Graphics received a Bronze. The past ten years have seen contenders vying fiercely for positions in the competition. For Digital Categories, the battle was between Subur Printing and Book & Story from Indonesia. In 2010, Vincent Kusuma, from Book

Print World Asia • 11/2012

Management/General 37 & Story, submitted only one entry and bagged a Gold. Unfortunately or otherwise, fellow powerful contender Subur Printing, who is a regular winner, dethroned them in 2011, and Kusuma had to be content with two Silvers and one Bronze. However, this year, Book & Story emerged as an uncontested winner in the competition. It won two Golds in the Book Printing category for digital, and the category of Multipiece Productions and Campaigns. In 2011, the company scored in Book

Printing, Calendars and the Packaging categories for digital. Indonesia is not the only country to have experienced the effects of turning tides. India’s Prince Digi Graphics met a worthy contender from Hong Kong in Jinda Holographic Printing Company Limited, who successfully dethroned them for the Innovation Trophy. Prince Digi Graphics has a track record for winning Sponsor Awards year-on-year. In 2011, the company won Kodak’s Innovation Trophy.

One can conclude this episode of turning tides is a reminder things are extremely fluid in the competition. You may be a Gold winner this year; however it’s anybody’s guess whether you remain in the top position or get ousted in subsequent contests. The Asian Print Awards were deemed the perfect occasion to honour Major Wong with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Based in Singapore, Major Wong has been on the Judging Panel of the Asian Print Awards for ten years straight since their inception in 2002.

Hybrid Printing’s Added Value How do you create a newspaper model that is attractive to both readers and advertisers while providing a healthy margin for publishers? That is the burning industry question Kodak Product experts will answer at a special European customer event on December 4, staged at Axel Springer AG’s Hamburg-Ahrensburg offset printing plant. The day will focus on ways the industry can make newspapers more dynamic and targeted with variable data. content, last minute stories or updates during production. Newspaper Market Review The day will begin with a warm welcome by Thomas Drensek, Plant Manager at Axel Springer’s Hamburg-Ahrensburg offset printing plant and Olivier Claude, Kodak, followed by an overview of the newspaper market situation and trends from Prof. Karl Malik, Media Consultant, PreMedia Newsletter.

The invited guests will see how the recently installed KODAK PROSPER S30 Imprinting System on a MANROLAND COLORMAN Newspaper Web Offset Press enables static offset- print to be combined with high quality digital inkjet printing at full production speed of up to up to 914 m / min (15 meters per second). Olivier Claude, General Manager for Print & Vice President Commercial Business EAMER Kodak comments: “Axel Springer was the first newspaper to implement hybrid printing at this speed and we are delighted to be able to show prospective customers the versatility and quality possible and also highlight how it can create a higher profitability for numerous other printed products.”

In fact German newspaper Bild embraced the capabilities of the KODAK PROSPER S30 Imprinting System for a large scale Cash Millions Lottery campaign aimed at its Hamburg readers. Tickets bearing a one-off, inkjet-imprinted number combination were included with the newspaper at the start of the week. Readers were then urged to compare their numbers with the daily lucky numbers for a chance to win cash and non-cash prizes. A similar prize draw was organized in which around 35,000 copies of Welt Kompakt were imprinted every day with the S30 System. An exclusive prize code on the tabloid's title page held the key to electrical goods. Although the promotion was originally only supposed to last two weeks this was doubled by the publisher due to its huge success.

Daily Digital Applications Applications include versioning or personalization of advertising campaigns, combining static advertising content with variable data and image components, as well as enabling local advertising without plate changes. It also facilitates cross-media marketing and builds bridges between the online and offline world.

Then there is variable QR codes, changes in text and image information as well as URLs or graphics to change adverts from copy to copy for incentives in multi-channel campaigns and even prize draws. All of which can help boost sales and reader loyalty. The KODAK PROSPER S30 Imprinting System can also be used for editorial purposes – inserting targeted reader

Axel Springer's Sales Manager Stephan Wellnitz and Master Printer Sven Türy will talk about the implementation of the project, the challenges it addressed, the progress made and the improvements delivered. Anton Hamm, Vice President Service and Printcom for MANROLAND Web Systems GmbH, followed by Kodak’s Marketing Program Manager MarieLuce Delaune, and IPS Sales Support Manager Rainer Küssel, will talk about how the project was completed and give an insight into its success. They will also highlight the opportunities that this opens up for print operations in this sector to create a more targeted approach and add value to their services. The event will conclude with a factory tour and demonstration of the KODAK PROSPER S30 Imprinting System in operation on the MANROLAND COLORMAN Web Press. Olivier Claude concludes: “Newspapers need to work harder to retain hard won readers and boost their revenue in a very competitive market. The flexibility and creativity offered by hybrid solutions can help them make their product stand out. With the KODAK Technology now in place we need to focus on presenting the options available so publishers can truly harness the benefits.”

Importance of Lean Paste Management GSE Dispensing offers automated modular textile paste dispensers for virtually all printing situations. Units range from the IPS delta suitable for large printing operations that features up to 32 components with a capacity of 150 kg, to the IPS sigma, which is designed for t-shirt printers and users of relatively low paste volumes up to 5 kg. Additionally, the IPS epsilon is flexible to suit small quantities or samples, typically dispensing 1 kg, 5 kg and 15 kg of liquid dyes. The IPS gravimetric dispensing systems are designed for speed and accuracy. Recipes take just a few minutes to prepare and dispense, reducing set-up times and delivering on demand colour in accuracies of 0.1g. This ensures uncompromising quality standards whilst eliminating waste and unnecessary make-ready time to meet increasingly shorter lead times and remain profitable. In addition, Textile Management Software (TMS) enables automated precise calculation of paste recipes, storing job data and reports that are instantly available to the operator. It also further enables the elimination

of waste with a return paste module. This tracks any leftover paste, which is then stored and recalculated into a new recipe when needed. Many GSE customers have reported paste-yield boosts of up to 30 percent as a result of switching to

automated dispensing systems. One of India's leading textile manufacturers, Mandhana Industries Ltd (Tarapur, Maharashtra), is now able to offer shorter lead-times, consistent quality standards and cost-effective samples after installing an IPS delta paste dispensing system. Frank Timmen, area sales manager at GSE Dispensing, comments, "IPS dispensers provide an economically viable and lean paste management solution for any textile printing situation. Driving waste out of the workflow enables optimum output to meet increasing production demands." GSE Dispensing has a global network of service representatives with agents across six continents and is represented in India by International Caliber (Vileparle, near Mumbai), an agency with a strong and reliable presence in the Indian market.

SG360 using Goss web press to give direct mail a wider appeal A lot of printers produce direct mail products, but there may not be anyone doing it quite like Illinois (USA) based SG360, a Segerdahl company. Equipped with a Goss Sunday 4000 web press that feeds a 75-inch-wide web into a custom in-line finishing system, the company is delivering efficiency, versatility and value for its customers that are hard to beat, according to vice president of manufacturing John Romita. SG360 is also a pioneer in combining offset and personalized ink jet content in a hybrid production process.

Romita points to a regular monthly job that previously required two traditional 38-inch web presses running in tandem at SG360 as just one example of how the Goss wide-web technology translates into a clear advantage. "Now, with the Sunday press, we run that job faster and far more efficiently with one press - and one press crew - instead of two, and the print quality is out of this world," he explains.

"The best bang for the buck in target marketing is in printed direct mail, and it will continue to be a very viable marketing channel in a world of multiple channels," according to Romita. "And for direct mail, our Sunday 4000 is unique. You would be hard pressed to find anyone running a 75-inch web with an in-line finishing line that is as long and as versatile as what we have."

Romita says integrating ink jet capability directly into the web offset platform at SG360 makes the company more viable and more valuable in supporting the direct mail campaigns of its customers. "A lot of the images and static copy will be printed offset, but addressing and some of the internal messaging can be variable, changing from piece to piece," he explains. "That is typically what we do in our hybrid printing process."

SG360 had initial concerns about adding the wider Sunday press format to its extensive portfolio of production options, but Romita says he was "pleasantly surprised" by how smoothly the company was able to install and operate both the press and the integrated in-line finishing system. He attributes the success partly to the Sunday press technology and the Goss International support of that technology. "First of all, there are not a lot of suppliers that can offer a 75-inch web press," Romita points out. "There was one other option, and we spent a lot of time looking at the equipment and doing press tests, but apples-to-apples there was no comparison. The Sunday press was head and shoulders above."

Ongoing support from Goss International has also been exemplary and an important contributor to the success of the Sunday press platform at SG360, according to Romita. He says he is impressed with the wealth of knowledge and information within the Goss team and the ability of such a large, global supplier to also be so responsive. "I think they're the best in the business for support," he adds. "They've always done a great job for me, whatever plant I've been in, and especially over the past few years and with the Sunday press. The support has been second to none."

Substantial four-press upgrade project Goss International has launched a comprehensive press controls upgrade program for the Sin Chew Media Corporation, publisher of the Sin Chew Daily in Malaysia. The project involves installation of new hardware and software systems to deliver latest capabilities from three existing Goss Universal presses at the publisher's plant in Kuala Lumpur and from a further Goss Universal press in Johore. The four Goss Universal presses to be upgraded each comprise eight four-high towers, one folder and eight reelstands. The turn-key upgrade project involves replacing existing proprietary press controls with industrial open systems. This includes the replacement of printing unit electronics with latestgeneration Goss print quality modules to control register, dampening and inking. PLC automation systems and networking will also be switched for latest industry-standard Ethernetbased systems. Four new combined consoles per press will manage all aspects of print control including production planning, CIP3/JDFcompliantpresetting, soft proofing, monitoring and job reporting.

Completion of the project will see automation of all press auxiliary systems, including reelstands and web tension controls integrated into one system, providing pressroom workers with new levels of operational convenience and flexibility. Via a standard Ethernet network and remote input/output controls at the units, the entire press will also be supported by a remote diagnostics service, enabling Goss International technicians to provide Sin Chew Daily with roundthe-clock assistance. "The new electrical architecture is designed for low maintenance with redundancy of the existing systems and components as required," explains StĂŠphane Jaunasse, Goss International customer service manager. "With every aspect of the press production

embedded into and driven by one open and accessible system, the 12 year-old Universal presses will be upgraded to a modern user-friendly high-quality printing solution, providing all the capabilities the company requires for its clients' diverse range of production demands." With work already underway, Goss International is working in close cooperation with Sin Chew Daily and other suppliers in managing the project to ensure minimal disruption at the plant and uninterrupted production throughout. System Increases Added Value in the Mailroom With its revolutionary concept of selective main jacket feeding, the FlexLiner inserting system from Muller Martini provides for flexible applications and attractive product design. Through selective main product feeding, the FlexLiner provides customers with entirely new opportunities to set themselves apart. Using up to three feeding positions, which can be fed manually, from the FlexiRoll buffer system or directly from the web printing press, inserts can be placed as FlexAds on the front or back pages of a main product, in addition to normal insert production. Thanks to their prominent position, each FlexAd stands out from the mass of inserts and provides customers with considerably greater advertising impact than traditional inserts. Prominent Card Tipping The card gluer unveiled at the IFRA Expo 2012 can now be integrated with the main jacket feeding. It affixes cards, inserts and flyers precisely to the front or back pages of the main product. The position of the card can be individually adjusted in accordance with the main product to achieve the greatest possible advertising impact.

Optimised Logistics Several main products can be processed on the FlexLiner using the comailing procedure. The inserting system can produce different titles even at high speeds of up to 30,000 cycles per hour at very short intervals and for all quantities. They can then be reliably bundled in an optional sequence adjusted to the requirements of regionalization and zoning, for example using the FlexPack stack formation system, and distributed. High Degree of Size Variability With the FlexLiner, production can be covered by just one machine across the whole size range from a maximum of 420 x 300 mm to a minimum of 240 x 170 mm. To ensure quick and flexible production changeovers, all settings of the inserting system are adjusted fully automatically to the new sizes when there is a main product change. Both the bottom of the pocket and the lateral alignment adjust to the size defined in the commander, removing the need

for manual settings. Fine adjustments can be made easily while the machine is running.

ity. Through the MMRemote service module, Muller Martini can perform distance maintenance online from the factory, thereby keeping maintenance and service costs extremely low.

Simple Operation and Maintenance Large Plexiglas panes enable optimal accessibility at the gathering sections and the inserting wheel. Feeding and

doors can be simply and fully opened, the time spent on maintenance can be reduced considerably, for example when cleaning away paper dust, which accumulates at high production speeds

Flexibility thanks to Modular System Concept The FlexLiner with up to 30,000 cycles per hour is the ideal inserting system for relatively small and medium-sized newspaper companies. It can handle print runs of up to 100,000 extremely efficiently thanks to its high production speeds. The flexibility and costeffective operation of the FlexLiner also make it the right choice for advertising journals or mailshot packages with print runs of up to one million. It can be expanded in any number of ways thanks to its open system architecture. If production requirements change, immediate action can be taken. The FlexLiner can be expanded to have up to 30 feeding stations. These can be fed manually or using stream feeders as required. Additional possibilities are created by individual addressing in the delivery transporter and the integration of a labeling system. The FlexLiner is equipped with both low folio lap opening and suction opening as standard. It is possible to switch simply between the two opening types, removing the need for additional investments in supplementary modules, which would otherwise be necessary. The time for both changeovers and fine adjustments is reduced to a minimum.

Cost-Effective Zone Production with MPC With the trend for greater regionalization, more inserts and additional titles for external publishing companies, production sequences in the mailroom are becoming increasingly complex. The FlexLiner system from Muller Martini satisfies all complex mailroom requirements. The Mailroom Production Control (MPC) system connects all sub-processes and supports optimal workflow and thus the cost-effective use of the equipment in the mailroom. MPC coordinates the feeder allocation at the FlexLiner and supports the operating personnel in the correct assembly of products.

drupa continues 4-Year Cycle – length shortened to 11 Days drupa is to maintain its Olympic 4-year cycle. This decision was taken by the 20-member drupa committee at its constitutive session held on 2 November 2012.

A key factor in this decision was the international trade fair calendar that is built around the four-yearly cycle of drupa as the world’s most important trade fair for the print and media industry. “Many innovative exhibitors and their successful customers would very much like a more frequent event. However, the supplier industry plans its entire trade fair marketing activities within a global concept. Dependable planning is of the utmost importance here in view of the current economic climate and the situation in international sales markets,” explains Kai Büntemeyer, Chairman of the Printing and Paper Technology Association (Fachverband Druckund Papiertechnik) within the VDMA (German Engineering Federation) and President of Global Print. Founded in 2008, the international association Global Print promotes the global exchange of information on developments in the print and paper industries. In addition to those from Germany, Global Print includes print and paper associations from the USA, China, Japan, India, France, Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Switzerland, who together make up nearly a quarter of the world market for printed products.

At the same time, the drupa committee decided to shorten the length of the fair to eleven days – i.e. from 31 May to 10 June 2016. “Visitor structure at drupa has changed. While in the past large groups travelled to the fair – preferably at the weekend – drupa is now increasingly developing into a B2B fair with a high proportion of top decision-makers,” said Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, CEO at Messe Düsseldorf, explaining the decision. “At this year’s drupa 78% of the international visitors and 52% of German visitors came from top management; respectively this is 4 and 5 percentage points more than in 2008. This makes running over two weekends unnecessary. With eleven days – i.e. one weekend and nine working days – we perfectly cater to the needs of both supply and demand.” The second major item on the agenda of the constitutive session concerned personnel. The body unanimously appointed Dipl.-Ing. Claus Bolza-Schünemann, CEO of Koenig & Bauer AG, as the Chairman of drupa 2016. As in 1995, 2000, 2004 and 2008 Koenig & Bauer will once again be providing drupa’s Chairman in the form of Claus Bolza-Schünemann, now aged 56. “I am delighted to assume the Presidency at such an exciting time. Our sector is developing at a rapid pace and drupa

2016 will represent a key milestone on the path into the future,” explained Claus Bolza-Schünemann. Dr. Jürgen Vutz, CEO at Windmöller & Hölscher KG was confirmed as Vice Chairman and thus Chairman of the Admissions Committee and Rolf Schwarz, President of the German Printing and Media Industries Federation (Bundesverband Druck und Medien e.V.) was confirmed as the Second Vice Chairman of drupa 2016. The drupa committee represents the entire technology spectrum – from pre-media and print through to further processing, packaging production and paper processing. Users are also represented here by media service providers – as are the five most important sectoral associations: • Printing and Paper Technology Association (Fachverband Druck- und Papiertechnik) within the VDMA (German Engineering Federation), Frankfurt Internet: http://www.vdma.org/ • German Printing and Media Industries Federation (Bundesverband Druck und Medien – bvdm), Wiesbaden Internet: http://www.bvdm-online.de/ • Paper-Processing Trade Associations (Wirtschaftsverbände Papierverarbeitung – WPV), Darmstadt Internet: http://www.wpv-ev.de • German Pulp and Paper Association (Verband Deutscher Papierfabriken – VDP), Bonn Internet: http//www.vdp-online.de • German Printing Ink Industry Association (Verband der Druckfarbenindustrie – VdD) within the Association of the Mineral Pigments Industry (Verband der Mineralfarbenindustrie e.V.), Frankfurt Internet: http//www.vdmi.de

News Deploy its ambitions of creating an eco- system for “digital appearance” by significant investments in science X-Rite Incorporated has forged a longterm relationship with the University of Bonn and acquired Sensible Graphics GmbH to take a leadership role in the promising science of digital appearance and the creation of a digital appearance “ecosystem.” Sensible Graphics, a company providing digital appearance solutions, has gained a reputation for its unprecedentedly realistic virtual renderings of vehicle bodies coated with pearlescent paints, upholstery made from patterned textiles and leathers and other products with complex textures. The technology developed during the past few years by the founders of Sensible Graphics gives a significant competitive advantage to designers who need highquality surface rendering information to produce photo-realistic virtual prototypes of products for the automotive, fashion, advertising and other industries. Terms of the investment were not disclosed. X-Rite has also signed a long-term research agreement with the University of Bonn and agreed to establish a graduate school in the field of digital appearance to be led by Dr. Reinhard Klein, head of Computer Graphics Group at the university's Institute of Computer Science II. Professor Klein and his group have played a key role as thought leaders in the field of computer graphics during the past 10 years, developing methods of modeling, rendering and compression for data-driven digital material appearance.

The appearance capture system

Visualization based on X-Rite's new Total Appearance Capture technology scan of a car paint with effect pigments

"With these investments, X-Rite will extend its current leadership in the business of color into the field of appearance," said X-Rite Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Francis Lamy. "X-Rite Pantone dealt with aspects of appearance such as gloss and texture for years, but the work being done at the University of Bonn and at Sensible Graphics takes this to a whole new level of sophistication. The partnership with the Bonn team will enable X- Rite to develop a new core of technology that will enable the company to tackle high-value problems and serve markets a few orders of magnitude larger than current.” Fundamentally, the new science and technology of modeling the physics of light-matter interaction enables the development of (i) new types of instrumentation to holistically capture all appearance attributes, (ii) new

technologies to formulate complex effect materials such as automotive paint, effect plastics or even contemporary complex (multi-layered and scattering) building materials and human skin, (iii) new accuracy and realism in rendering within the computing power (GPU) reach of mobile devices, and (iv) a categorization and classification system for materials based on their appearance attributes to enable search, retrieval and semantic referencing. All of this will lead to simplification of product design processes when dealing with complex materials. "X-Rite will repurpose technologies developed over the last 2 decades by the computer graphics, entertainment and gaming industries for the benefit of its customers, with the aim to produce measurement-based accurate, physically correct simulation of real-world materials," Lamy added. “We strongly believe that the post-PC computing devices – tablets, mobile platforms, and smart phones – will lead the redefinition of man-machine interaction and call for the digitalization of ‘sensorial’ experience (e.g. new and alternate forms of input devices, haptic devices, autostereoscopic displays). This creates a great opportunity for our initiative. Our ambition with the digitalization of appearance is to ride that mega-trend by offering true electronic metaphors to ‘real world’ materials.” Central to this, X-Rite plans to expand the reach of the Pantone brand beyond its traditional relevance of communicating and specifying flat color into serving as a key standard for definition and categorization of complex digital

materials. The PantoneLIVE digital color standards Digital Rights Management (DRM), which already delivers cloudbased color data, will be expanded in the coming years to manage and deliver appearance data. “After a multi-year search across three continents to upgrade our platform of capabilities, we have found a rare, worldclass team at the University of Bonn who demonstrates thought leadership, technical sophistication and formal rigor, alongside an eagerness and passion for the challenge that mirror our own,” said Lamy. “We believe the partnership with Prof. Reinhard Klein and his team will enrich the skills and experience of both sides and we are excited at the prospect of walking this path together.” "We are very pleased to have forged this partnership with X-Rite to promote further research into this exciting branch of computer science," Klein said. "We are very satisfied to see that our fundamental research is applied to commercially

relevant problems.” Led by Dr. Gero Mueller, Sensible Graphics has developed technology to process and compress data captured by a hemispherical array of digital cameras and light sources to create virtual prototypes with a remarkably realistic look nearly indistinguishable from that of the real object. “Since this is a measurementbased process, designers and 3D artists can now use physically correct and highly realistic virtual materials without timeconsuming tweaking in material editors,” Mueller said. The automotive industry has been an early adopter of Sensible Graphics’ appearance process for realistic digital renderings that show designers and customers how vehicles look when coated with pearlescent or iridescent paints and how upholstery looks when fashioned from textured woven cloths or leathers. Other industries that may find applications for the new technology include industrial

of small, complexly assembled consumer products. The system is easy to use, can work for prolonged unattended periods, and requires only the minimal manpower to operate," added Zeitun. The Objet1000 system offers an unrivaled choice of over 100 materials, enabling designers and engineers to simulate both standard and ABS-grade plastics. As with all Objet Connex 3D printers, the Objet1000 is also able to print up to 14 different material properties within a single model. Image Factory Continues Migration to Digital with Installation of HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press HP announced that Image Factory, of Chippenham, Wiltshire, UK, has installed an HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press to provide cost-effective, versatile solutions for customers. The installation of the HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press follows the installation of an HP Scitex FB7500 Industrial Press less than a year ago. The company is now able to continue the migration of POS/POP and other graphic displays from screen to digital. In October 2011, when HP launched the FB7600 press, it also made an optional Upgrade Kit available to HP Scitex FB7500 Industrial Press users, which Image Factory installed. Image Factory has added the optional HP Scitex FB7500/FB7600 White Ink Kit to one of its presses and can use HP FB225 White Scitex Ink on the full range of substrates. "The addition of the white ink was part of the process to phase out screen printing," said Tim Boore, head of digital technologies, Image Factory. "The results are excellent and it is far more costeffective. The ability to print white really puts the last nail in the coffin for screen

"The speed and capacity of these printers has enabled us to shut down one of our three screen printing lines, and when we've completed the options and upgrades, we'll be able to shut down a second." The HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press uses UV-curable inks and is capable of imaging a broad range of substrates, from films, papers, and boards to more unusual materials like metal, glass and wood up to 25mm thick. With the optional multisheet loader on both presses enabling the simultaneous printing of four sheets, Image Factory is able to maximise productivity. "The result of these investments is that we have presses with identical functionality that enable us to move work from screen to digital," said Boore. While the market remains challenging, Boore feels that Image Factory is well positioned to give its customers the quality and service that they want, while ensuring its competitiveness and margins. "Using our MIS system we have been monitoring our press speeds, ink, and material use and production throughput carefully," he said. "The presses are performing at the levels promised by HP,

and our customers have been impressed with the improvements in the print quality and speed of delivery." The HP Scitex FB7600 Digital Press can print up to 95 full-size sheets per hour, but for POP/POS display quality, POP55 mode (up to 55 sheets per hour) offers maximum productivity of 290m2/hr (3120ft2/hr). Singaporean printer suffers S$50+K loss over date revision A Chinese daily reported an education body in Singapore rejected 40,000 printed calendars for 2013 over an alleged error in dates for holidays. Design of the calendar reportedly commenced last July, and the printer stated that there had not been any mention of a change in dates throughout the execution of the job. Tan, an executive who oversaw the entire project, told the media that production took place in October, and delivery was made early November. Unexpectedly, the client reverted (shortly after delivery) that there had been an error in the school holiday dates. Tan added further checks with the education body’s corporate website showed a revision in the new year’s school holidays.

News He laments it’s his first encounter of such an incident in all his years of experience in the industry, emphasising that no notice of the change in dates for school holidays was communicated. “The client initially insisted it’s our error in this issue and wanted to return the goods costing about S$57,000. Our subsequent checks suggest the error could now lie with the client. We have since spoken with the client – with hopes they accept the 40,000 calendars,” Tan confirms.

"By bringing the filling and packing lines here in the first quarter of next year, we will save much time which will result in a faster production process," Marlou Constantino, Tanauan plant manager, told reporters during a plant tour for the media on Friday.

This incident has caused the printer substantial losses and Tan was not spared a reprimand from management. However, the real issue now centres on the next step to deal with the current stock should the client remain adamant about not accepting the goods. To print the revised calendars is certainly too late. Tan has requested the media to not name his printing firm.

The Nestle factory in Lipa used to fill and pack the coffee creamer that came from Thailand.

Nestle Philippines ups facilities in Batangas Nestle Philippines reportedly is revving up the production line for Coffee Mate Creamer as part of the goal to reduce imports from Thailand and Malaysia. Part of the process is to centralize the manufacturing and packaging facilities within the newly constructed facility in Tanauan, Batangas, by moving the filling and packing lines from nearby Lipa City by 2013.

"In the current process, we send to Lipa for filling and packing the creamer we produce here in Tanauan," Constantino noted.

When the Tanauan facility was opened last month, Nestle Philippines chairman and chief executive John Martin Miller told reporters the factory brought the company's total investments in the Philippines to P16 billion and reflected its confidence and commitment to the economy. The factory would reduce Nestle’s importation of Coffee Mate from Malaysia and Thailand, he added. Fuji Xerox Honours Winners of PIXI Awards 2012 Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Pte. The comments you see here are just a few of the well-wishes we received from our ArtPro customer base around the world on this historic occasion.” A 20th birthday celebration video including customer statements can also be viewed on Esko's YouTube channel . Ducommun, Switzerland: Jean Ducommun, owner of Ducommun in Switzerland, has used ArtPro since the very beginning. "It's true,” he says. “We've been a happy user since 1992. The software evolved alongside our company. It's so versatile that you cannot only work in separations rather than composite files, but also make changes on the go without having to go back to rip-and-trap. We cannot recommend it highly enough. It's a must-have for any company involved in packaging." Van Eerd, The Netherlands: "In the 15

years that we've been using ArtPro,” states Jeroen Sneijders of Van Eerd, “ArtPro has grown with us and the tool has allowed us to expand even further. ArtPro capabilities and our Esko partners have encouraged us to keep growing by continuously assessing and improving our processes. We develop packaging for the pharmaceutical industry, so quality and traceability are imperative, and the Certified module has been crucial. The Certified module enables us to perfectly streamline all steps in the artwork process so we can easily and rapidly anticipate and trace back any issues. ArtPro is designed specifically for packaging and labels, which makes it the perfect user-friendly tool for us, enhancing our productivity to the fullest." Schawk, Los Angeles, USA: Dino Fiocchi, Applications Specialist at Schawk in the US, has been an ArtPro fan from the very beginning. He explains: "The technical properties of the program are outstanding. ArtPro enables you to deal with large images, but still allows you to work quickly. It doesn't slow down with larger images and more complex files. The Stepper, trapping and the editing tools I also consider to be invaluable. The ruler/editing tool far superior to any other editors." RAKO Graphic Services, Germany: "The Esko solutions used by us helped to increase the print quality and productivity in packaging printing significantly,” says Mirco Wilke of RAKO Graphic Services. “ArtPro plays a decisive role in preparing and monitoring high end print data in a reliable workflow." A bright looking future "Esko will continue to improve the existing packaging tools in ArtPro such as trapping, S&R and preflighting and at the same time respond to new trends in the packaging industry," concludes Bernard Zwaenepoel, Senior VP Software Business at Esko. "In addition, the integration with other Esko solutions will be taking another step forward: structural design files from Studio and ArtiosCAD will be handled better and communication with Automation Engine and WebCenter will be further aligned. Finally, by modernizing the kernel, that will be shared with other Esko applications, ArtPro will become PDF native, platform independent and more productive than ever!"
