Agfa Graphics to Lift the Covers off the new Arkitex Production The way we work is changing. The way we interact is changing. Our workflow is changing. For nearly a quarter-century, Agfa Graphics' expertise in electronic workflow - in commercial printing and newspaper production - has been at the forefront of the graphic arts industry. At the World Publishing Expo 2013, Agfa Graphics will be unveiling the new Arkitex workflow Arkitex Production. It is more than a simple upgrade of previous editions of Arkitex, which celebrates its 10 years anniversary at WPE 2013. It is a radical change in how work gets done. Designed for newspaper print production, Arkitex Production builds on the best of Agfa Graphics' experience with Arkitex and the experience of more than one-thousand customers around the world. "Arkitex Production is being designed as a completely new system built from

the ground up and with a new look, but at its heart and in its DNA is Arkitex," said Jeff Cord, Arkitex Marketing Manager, Agfa Graphics. "People will expect to access their workflow from mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets. By using HTML5 as a core part of the Arkitex workflow product, we can natively support a wide variety of devices" Cord added. Newspaper groups are consolidating multiple production sites into single, easier to manage, larger systems and newspaper printers are looking to increase their contract print work. At the same time, individual publishers and groups are looking to outsource system management. Arkitex Production is designed to accommodate the production requirements off the smallest newspaper printer to the largest publishers and groups. It

provides secure system and data access locally and in the cloud for all types of customers. Arkitex Production is already production-proven because it is based on an enhanced version of the 64-bit architecture and server used in Arkitex Portal. Arkitex Production is fully compatible with current Arkitex components and will allow easy upgrades to existing systems.

Guaranteed flight document security thanks to twin Xeikon 8500s Edelmann Leaflet Solutions installed two Xeikon 8500 digital presses, further establishing its pioneering role in document printing for the aviation industry The Lindauer Druckerei offset printing operation was set up in the early 1960s. With its workforce of 200 and under the name of Edelmann Leaflet Solutions GmbH it has been a member of the Edelmann Group since 2010. The company specializes in the production of security-related printed products. Along with printing approximately 500 million packaging leaflets worldwide for the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, just-in-time production for the aviation industry is one of the company's core activities. Printing time-critical, individualized flight documents calls above all for a high level of productivity and requires the digital printing system to be absolutely fail-safe. After working for several years with digital sheet printing systems, it was time to consider a new investment. The requirements for the new system were crystal clear: it was to handle a weekly production volume of at least one million documents, offer a processing width of 512 mm for 3up

DIN A5 printing and be able to process lightweight papers under 60g/m2 in both front and back printing. A comprehensive analysis of the market showed that the Xeikon 8500 was the most suitable machine for the production of security-relevant documents. The digital web-fed printing system is renowned for its high productivity, especially when it comes to minimal print runs. It allows simultaneous 5-color printing on both sides in a single production run, with DIN A4/A5 documents set out as an exact match and for maximum benefit. With a true resolution of 1200 dpi and variable color density, the Xeikon 8500 allows to print on a variety of materials up to maximum media width of 512 mm and weight of 40 to 350 g/m2 in practically unlimited lengths. Thanks to the electro-photographic dry-toner process, standard offset printing papers can be used without the need for pretreatment or lacquering. The digitally printed paper is de-inkable and fully recyclable.

Due to the level of productivity to be guaranteed, Edelmann Leaflet Solutions decided in March of this year to purchase two Xeikon 8500 digital presses, allowing the company to manage production peaks and handle different orders in parallel operations. Upon the installation of the Xeikon 8500 end of June, the company also installed a MBO Near-Line-Finishing unit for variable and selective folding, that is supported by the intelligent codes contributed by the Xeikon systems. In the downstream processing line, individual sheets or 4-page folded leaflets are further processed and merged inline and "on-the-fly" – through barcode control and including quality control – in a folding unit designed especially for digital printing, resulting in individual flight documents. Danny Mertens, Director Marketing & Business Development Document, states: Marcus Vierkorn, Operations Manager at Edelmann Leaflet Solutions, is delighted with the investment in the Xeikon 8500s web-fed printing systems and downstream processing. "Continuous roll printing guarantees complete format flexibility and requires fewer stops for operators to load and unload. Also paper jams are completely eliminated. This results in considerably leaner process operations in the print room and therefore an overall improvement of production times," says Vierkorn. "For us, the two Xeikon 8500s and the efficient, flexible downstream processing technology from MBO are the perfect combination for printing both individualized timecritical documents and packaging inserts. We are now producing about one million security-relevant documents per week – this means that we make full use of the available system capacity.“

Landa and Komori strengthen strategic relationship Landa Selects Komori Platforms for all Sheetfed Nanographic Printing™ Presses – Orders Production Units

Landa Corporation and Komori Corporation today announced the strengthening of their strategic relationship. The companies had collaborated during Landa’s development of Nanography™, with Komori providing sheetfed platforms for Landa’s launch of Nanographic Printing™ at Drupa 2012. The companies have now formalized their long-term strategic alliance by entering into multi-faceted agreements in which Komori will be the global supplier of all sheetfed Landa Nanographic Printing Press platforms to Landa and Landa will provide Komori with Nanographic Printing technology and Landa NanoInk™ Colorants for incorporation into Komori-branded Nanographic Printing presses. Komori Selected to Provide State-ofthe-Art Customized Platforms for all Landa Sheetfed Presses Since Drupa, Landa engineers have been evaluating proposals from the

industry’s leading press vendors, both European and Asian, for the supply of sheetfed platforms for Landa Nanographic Printing™ Presses. In making its assessment, Landa took into account the caliber of engineering, robustness of design, automation, reliability and cost effectiveness. The vendor’s culture of innovation, technical resources, commercial success and financial stability were also important criteria. The conclusion of this year-long pursuit left no doubt: Komori is in a class of its own and the clear partner of choice for Landa. The outcome led Landa to place orders with Komori for sheetfed platforms for Landa’s S10 Nanographic Printing Presses, which will start to be delivered to customers in the fourth quarter of 2014. Komori and Landa Formalize License Agreement Following a lengthy technology diligence period, during which

Komori scientists and engineers studied, evaluated and tested Landa Nanographic™ Printing technology, Komori concluded that Nanography™ has the potential to deliver on its promise of matching the quality and speed of offset printing at the lowest cost per page in the digital printing industry. Komori therefore formalized its license agreement with Landa, cementing the long-term strategic alliance between the companies. Landa Founder, Chairman and CEO Benny Landa says, “Since we first started our collaboration with Komori, we have been deeply impressed by the company, its people and its culture. Komori is an outstanding partner for Landa, bringing an extremely high caliber of engineering expertise, secondto-none quality and performance, together with a fervent commitment and willingness to invest in the future. It is gratifying to have as our strategic partner the one global press vendor that continues to thrive despite the challenges faced by the industry.” Yoshiharu Komori, Komori President, Chairman and CEO, says, “It is a great honor to be able to cooperate with Landa in bringing Nanography to market. Our teams have been closely monitoring Landa’s development and have been amazed with the progress made so far, which exceeds our expectations. We believe that the impact of Benny Landa’s new invention, Nanography— with the Komori platform—will have a far greater impact even than his introduction of the first digital printing press.“

iGen 150 Press Takes Guesswork out of Image Quality Variety may be the spice of life and for printers it can keep their business immune to the ups and downs of an ever-changing marketplace. But producing a variety of applications comes with challenges and delivering consistent color image quality is one. Xerox’s newest iGen® 150 Press offers a choice of line screens giving printers complete control over image quality so that each piece – regardless of quantity or elements such as photos, text, colors and images – looks consistent. For example, the press’ new 210 line screen heightens the softness in skin tones while keeping the detail of hair and background images intact – capabilities printers need to capture jobs in the fast-growing photo marketplace. A new technology inside the press called Object Oriented Half Toning renders images and text smooth or sharp as required for brochures, catalogs and fliers. “Digital color image quality is no longer a guessing game with the iGen 150,” said Jeff Jacobson, president, Graphic Communications Operations, Xerox. “We built an ‘intelligent’ press that puts printers in the driver’s seat. They can confidently determine how best to produce each job while moving

more offset pages to digital. And we have taken automation to a new level so printers can deliver more sellable prints per hour.”

when the job enters the workflow. Single-point Transfer prints 9,000, four-over impressions per hour – or 150 prints per minute.

New features offer both quality and productivity enhancements With the iGen 150, printers can gain about a 25 percent increase in productivity since less time is spent on reprinting, quality control, job setup and press availability. Options that make this possible include:

Features such as Xerox’s Confident Color, In-line Spectrophotometer, Auto Density Control and Matte Dry Ink, as well as Standard Gloss Dry Ink, which is now available as an option.

2400 x 2400 dpi imaging system delivers more information per square inch – improving details, uniform tints, flesh tones and sharpness. Automated Image-on-Paper technology eliminates manual setups for sheet sizes up to 26 inches – a time saver. Photo Create reach the pinnacle of on-demand personalized fulfillment operations

Photo Create was founded in 2006 to exploit the digital imaging technology that had the potential to change on-demand photo book and personalized product fulfillment. Although the company had its roots in photo specialty stores, it embraced digital printing to

achieve the considerable transformation from retail to a wholesale and web-based business model. In doing so, it became Australia’s largest personalized, on-demand fulfillment operation.

Photo Create reached and maintained this landmark without moving from its remote regional headquarters in Glen Innes, high on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales – 600 km north of Sydney and 360 km southwest of Brisbane. The company’s Australian manufacturing facilities produce a range of more than 800 personalized digitally printed products, which includes photobooks with hundreds of options in hard cover and soft cover; calendars; greeting cards; photo gifts;

Digital Technology canvas prints; wall décor; glass, metal and acrylic prints; custom framing; fine art prints; digital prints; poster prints; and corporate on-demand stationery. Peter Barr, Photo Create’s general manager says: “It comes down to lean manufacturing. We produce great quality products with excellent turnaround speed, and we leverage that speed to ensure the products get into the transport network to allow for immediate delivery into the major metropolitan Australian cities. We deliver orders on behalf of a range of vendors to international addresses in Europe, Asia, the US and Canada very quickly despite the fact that we’re in a regional location.” “Wave of emotion” Barr has to respond to the “wave of emotion” driving the personal wishes of the huge community that Photo Create serves – mothers, fathers, grandparents, godparents, aunts, uncles - the full family orchestra. “People trust us to deliver a physical memento of their very personal emotions. They invest time and feeling in making their choice of the image they want captured. Photo Create is charged with creating something that delivers an extra dimension to that emotional level,” says Barr. Photo Create founder, Hugh Eastwood, gave an indication of the future direction and opportunities possible as a result of the relationship built between the company and HP. “We’re expanding our product range so that we are able to personalize basically everything. Our mission statement is to give life to peoples’ stories.” If that is the emotionally driven side of the business, the process- oriented disciplines established by Photo Create underpin the pinnacle of success it has achieved in seven short years. In that time, The HP Indigo team has been helping Photo Create to gratify the emotional desires of its farflung customer base with the initial investment in the HP Indigo press 5000. As the business growth delivered profitability, Photo Create continued to scale up with HP Indigo equipment. Further HP Indigo models - two HP Indigo 5500 and four HP Indigo 7000 Digital Presses - have been added to

the production line. The fleet of seven HP Indigo Presses help ensure that the treasured mementoes are delivered with the best quality, lowest cost and shortest lead time. The company employs 150 people within the local community but this number can increase to 600 during the traditional peak seasons such as Easter, Mother's or Father's Day, and especially Christmas. Highly charged personalized demand The months of November and December see a 24/7 production line of three shifts working to meet the highly charged demand for personalized mementoes. At this peak season, in one day, Photo Create have to produce between 25,000 and 30,000 different products and the HP Indigo Digital Presses are an integral part of the total solution. Barr recalls the early days of what has developed into a strong and supportive relationship. “HP Indigo offered a print solution that was perfect for our needs. Just as important, HP Indigo was the only provider who was willing to support and service the equipment in our regional location. “This was a tremendous boost because no competitors were able to offer either that quality of technology or that level of commitment. We are a major employer in this area and the HP support has underpinned our success and given con-

tinuity and stability to the community we serve.” Vital part of the workflow “The HP Indigo Digital Presses are absolutely key to what we do. They are a vital part of our workflow because the machines understand and digest our information in an intelligent way and then supply the appropriate horsepower to deliver our output. Without them, we couldn’t be in the business of producing a one-off print run for the photo retail customer we service,” explains Barr. “It’s not just the printing ink on paper; it’s also the service and support we receive from HP. It shows us ways to maximize our efficiencies. HP help with training for our support and they assist us with the peak season,” he adds. Looking ahead Photo Create believes people would like to share a strongly personalized story. He says: “Our opportunity is only limited by the speed and agility with which we can move. We pride ourselves on a competitive edge that relies on our ability to move quickly and change as required by the market or the demands of the consumer. “That competitive edge is underscored by the high print quality, the reliability of the HP Indigo Digital Press range and its unquestioned cost effectiveness,” concludes Barr.

Revived Kodak sees potential in newspapers Kodak rocked the industry emerging fresh out of bankruptcy. Today, the Rochester-based player is all set to take on the market. This time, Creativity takes centre stage. Christel Lee reports. Everyone held their breath a couple of years back when the company filed Chapter 11. Speculations shot through the roofs on what caused the giant’s demise. Asia itself saw many familiar faces from the company leave, followed by its subtle retreat from the limelight. Subsequently, patent sales circulated within the industry. Yet, it’s footprint remains blatant at major tradeshows. Evandro Matteucci, Vice-President for Commercial Business for Asia Pacific region is tasked to address the media for obvious reasons. The poised representative has not changed in terms of remaining positive, clearly reflecting the company’s new lease of life.

Matteucci began his presentation with “What’s next starts now”, showcasing the company’s plans to continue leading the graphics market. “Focused New Company” is the key-phrase, and it listed Packaging, Commercial Print, Newspaper/Publishing, Enterprise and Functional Printing Segments under the scope. One could not be more convinced the potential this Rochester-based company has on its return into the ring, with an aim to deliver breakthrough technology that enables customers to create a variety of new business models. For starters, online content is known to wound newspapers. Multiple coverage of newspaper closure has added more

Evandro Matteucci, Vice-President for Commercial Business for Asia Pacific region pressure. “We are aware newspapers are sustained by advertisements. In the past, majority of the advertisements were recruitment. Today, we feel newspapers should embark on something different,” Matteucci comments. He mentioned Hybrid Printing is one of the concepts in newspapers. “Geographical personalisation is a good opportunity newspapers can explore. Newspapers can partner with advertisers to drive traffic within a specific area for promotions and campaigns. This places newspapers on par with direct mail. The same applies to recruitment advertisements and inserts. The crux is the press not stopped,” Matteucci notes. However there are more areas Kodak is poised to embark on: Brand owner’s integrity Matteucci pointed out compelling areas Kodak can “intervene” for product integrity; pharmaceutical and newspapers. With the recent probe involving GlaxoSmithKline in China, it’s apt for Kodak’s action in the action. He highlights, “We have a three-pronged approach to address the integrity of brand owners whose products are being copied. Securityprinted packaging is the tool that not

Management/General only protects brand owners’ product integrity, it helps printers as their risks lowered, and the government as a result picks up more taxes!” Personalised education Kodak is also taking on the education industry in Japan. Matteucci notes, “In a class, every student has different pace of picking up things. Standardised textbooks may not adequately address the learning needs of each student. Kodak has embarked on the task of producing personalised study books in accordance to each student’s learning calibre, in collaboration with institutions. This initiative has been extended to both high schools and tertiary institutions. The participating printer has four units of Kodak Prosper presses to address the volume.” Photobooks Pictures, weddings and India go together. Kodak’s reputation with photographers has placed the company in a position to address the photo book market since the country has some 20 million weddings a year. Kodak has created four hubs with Nexpress customers in India for photographers to partner with. In such scenarios, photographers’ roles have moved beyond snapping pictures. They are now actively selling prints to wedding couples that want to leave a lasting impression of their matrimony. Kodak’s ability to print gold has an added advantage in India as it’s deemed superiority and sophistication.

High-tech from Saxony for Perth in Australia Following an order for a six-colour KBA Rapida 162 with coater from Centrum Printing, a further Australian firm has opted for cutting-edge press technology from Koenig & Bauer (KBA). Perth print business Picton Press is assembling what its managing director Dennis Hague says will be the best printing solution in operation in Australia with a multi-million dollar spend that includes a new automated ten-colour KBA Rapida 106 perfector and a new MIS system. The press which features sidelay-free infeed, simultaneous plate changing and DriveTronic components will start its journey to Australia in January 2014. Dave Lewis, general manager at KBA Australia says: “There will not be a higher specified press in Australia. It prints at 18,000sph in perfecting mode, has fully automated makeready, automatic simultaneous plate changing, Plate Ident cameras which scan the plates and pull the job into register before running any substrates, and it is

also connected to a central ink pumping system.” Thanks to its standardised dryer modules the new press will come prepared for retrofitting HR–UV inks. The advantage of this is that the ink dries immediately and no spray powder is necessary. Dennis Hague is looking forward to the benefits this press will bring: “This increase in firepower will allow us to offer the very highest quality products at highly competitive prices due to significant reductions in raw materials, makeready times, reduced energy usage and full automation, resulting in maximum efficiency.” He continues: “We believe in the next six months Picton will have assembled the best printing solution operation in Australia enabling us to offer our customers additional benefits,

provide related information in respect to the pressures being applied by the market with ISO colour management and reporting, ease of operation, transparent reporting, supported by the very best people all in one affordable easy-to-use set of platforms. The new press will also allow us entry into markets we have been unable to service in the past.” “After extensive trips, many demonstrations and subsequent meetings with various manufacturers, we choose KBA. This decision was based on the press technology, their openness and support to fully integrate the solutions and a reporting system that we not only require but our major clients are demanding,” says Hague when explaining why he decided on the Rapida 106.

ContiTech Growing with Printing Blankets – Above All in China Eco-friendly printing blankets made in Germany are finding more and more fans in China. With its CONTI-AIR® and PHOENIX XTRA BLANKETS brands, ContiTech Elastomer Coatings has increased sales in China by more than ten percent in the last 12 months. "We are enjoying growth despite the slight slowdown in economic growth in China and the stagnation of the offset market worldwide," says Dr. Thomas Perkovic, head of the printing blanket segment at ContiTech. With sales topping the market average there by more than ten percent, ContiTech also picked up ground in the NAFTA region. Performing above average in China, products for sheet offset, packaging print, and metal decoration are a factor driving growth. Another is a heightened awareness of quality and the environment. "Chinese printing shops are increasingly focusing on high-quality premium products that create an even more compelling print image and are more economical because they last longer," said Perkovic. The heightened environmental awareness is boosting demand for

climate-friendly and climate-neutral printing blankets, such as those produced by ContiTech in particular. The company not only refrains from using solvents in production. It has also optimized its procedures to ensure that CO2 emissions are much lower than with standard products. By means of certificates, ContiTech printing blanket production process is, moreover, climate-neutral, at no extra expense to the customer Thanks to a dynamic sales policy on the ground and cooperation with a large dealer in Hong Kong, ContiTech has managed to secure a market share of almost 15 percent in China in recent years. "We will continue to expand and strengthen our local presence," says Perkovic. In Shanghai, ContiTech already has its own service center for the graphics industry. Here, CONTIAIR® brand printing blankets are cut

Worldwide Printing Hub to Install State of the Art Press Worldwide Printing Hub in Cannington, Western Australia has ordered the highest spec’d XL75 five colour press in that state. Managing Director Arnold Whiteside says the company chose the XL75, which comes with a coating unit and Heidelberg’s proprietary InPress Control, to primarily “drive efficiencies, improve speed to market and ensure colour and quality consistency”. Producing work for Worldwide Printing franchises around Australia, the Cannington Hub, which employs a staff of 75, is a hive of activity. With its client base predominantly comprising small to medium enterprises Worldwide Printing produces a large volume of gang work, which enables the Hub to enjoy the economies of scale says Whiteside.

“Eighty percent of the jobs we produce are quick turnaround, high quality short runs. Customers are looking for a reasonably priced product without having to compromise on quality. The XL75 press gives us options for a fifth colour as well as coating and its speed and high level of automation means we can push through work very fast.” With the vast majority of work being repeat jobs, colour consistency is paramount as Whiteside explains. “Worldwide Printing Solutions has its own colour finder, that is not dissimilar to a Pantone book. Our franchisees work from this finder so it is imperative that

we print to those densities each and every time because if there’s a variation we end up having to re-print. We are able to maintain a decent standard at the moment, but there is a lot of manual intervention by the printers to change the curves to ensure reproduction is accurate. That’s why we’ve chosen InPress Control as it is a fully automated colour management solution that will make the whole process much easier, faster and ensure colour consistency”. The ecological features of the XL75 will also enable Worldwide Printing Solutions to meet its environmental mandate. “We are the only carbon neutral print group in Australia and we are very proud of our green credentials. We have optioned the XL75 press with Heidelberg’s benchmark STAR environmental solutions that will enable us to continue to meet our objectives through the reduction of energy consumption, consumables and waste products. This highly efficient, ecologically responsible print solution also provides our franchisees with a sound environmental selling point on which to go to market”. Before making the final decision Worldwide Printing Solutions visited a site in Melbourne to view the XL75 in action. “We are a Heidelberg house and have a great relationship with the company, but it was still very beneficial to see the press in operation and discuss its performance with another printer”. In conclusion Whiteside says, “Heidelberg is a credible, reliable partner and that gives us confidence to invest in the XL75. The new press will be installed in January and commissioned in February providing us with a brilliant way to start the New Year”.

British fashion house to print in-house One of the UK’s most prestigious fashion houses has ordered a Manroland press to print its own high-quality literature. David Nieper, a designer and manufacturer of women’s knitwear, nightwear and clothing, will take delivery of the ROLAND 704LV HiPrint (four printing units and a coating unit) in December after placing the order with Manroland Sheetfed UK – owned by Langley Holdings plc, the UK engineering group based in Nottinghamshire. David Nieper sells by catalogue and online to private, upmarket clients in the UK, Europe and further afield. The catalogue is their shop window and the highest possible print quality is essential to accurately portray their merchandise in multiple languages across the world. The ethos of the business is Made in Britain, and quality in everything – including, of course printing. Colour management is paramount with the choice of fashion fabrics, photography, and their accurate representation onto the page. It’s essential that customers can shop with confidence – and that’s why the company chose not just to purchase their own printing press, but that it should be Manroland.

Their decision was based on the need for the highest quality print production, and the ability to upgrade, thus futureproofing the investment as much as possible. The machine will be supplied with ‘first fit’ for LEC-Low Energy Curing, allowing for future co-operation between Manroland and David Nieper. The family-owned company is more than 50 years old and employs more than 230 skilled people, including designers, garment cutters, seamstresses and dressmakers. Now they’ll need print operatives too! Christopher Nieper, Managing Director, says: “It’s a big step for a fashion house to venture into printing its own catalogue in-house. All of our fashion is ‘Made in Britain’ and this will help us secure the highest quality, the most accurate colour representation and importantly, to secure local jobs.” They chose Manroland above two other competitors and cite the quality of the printed sheet as the primary reason, along with excellent colour control to reduce deviation in colour consistency during the run.

The press will be installed in the David Nieper headquarters at Alfreton, Derbyshire, and already ideas are taking root in future improvements on the quality of distribution of products with printed boxes and tissue papers. About David Nieper David Nieper is a designer and manufacturer of women’s fashion – all Made in Britain. Based in Alfreton, Derbyshire, the fashion house was founded in 1961 and is renowned for its use of the highest quality fabrics and the personal touch it achieves in delivering world-class customer service to its customers throughout the UK and overseas. A family business, employing 230 skilled people, including designers, garment cutters, seamstresses and dressmakers with decades of experience, we run our own Fashion Academy to educate, nurture and develop fashion and manufacturing skills for the future. Gallus has its finger on the pulse at Labelexpo 2013 With visitor numbers at its stand up over 30 percent on 2011, numerous promising contacts and impressive machine sales in the double-digit range, Gallus enjoyed an excellent Labelexpo. Due to the many new suppliers of digital presses, countless visitors were looking for guidance in their decision-making process to ensure future-focused label manufacture. With the Gallus Print Shop concept, Gallus demonstrated the practical combination of digital and conventional printing methods along with the finishing of printed rolls in the production environment – an impressive portfolio of solutions. Not a question of conventional or digital No fewer than 61 live demonstrations and workshops gave visitors to the Gallus stand an excellent overview of the entire range of printing methods – from screen, flexographic and offset to rotogravure and digital. They were able to see with their own eyes how

to efficiently combine the benefits of each technology. With the Gallus Print Shop concept, Gallus introduced a new method for combining the advantages of digital and conventional printing methods by networking the individual presses and controlling the production process centrally using innovative CERM MIS workflow software. This concept makes label production extremely easy, whether all-digital, entirely conventional or hybrid with “pre-print & insetting”. It also turns traditionally machine-based production planning and control into a smart, comprehensive end-to-end solution that improves machine utilisation,

enables the dynamic and flexible application and combination of all printing methods (new, innovative design and product decoration options) and reduces the overall order planning and processing workload. Gallus is the only supplier to offer the full range of printing methods – both digital and conventional – from a single source, thus ensuring that the Gallus Print Shop concept provides a complete solution for fast and cost-effective label production with possible savings of up to 20 percent. New near-line solution for efficient digital label production In addition to the Gallus Print Shop concept, the highly flexible near-line solution comprising the Linoprint L from Heidelberg and the Gallus ECS C also proved particularly popular. This solution combines the benefits of high-resolution, digital four-colour inkjet printing with conventional highperformance finishing. As required

and at the touch of a button, labels can be printed digitally inline on the Heidelberg Linoprint L and finished and die cut on the Gallus ECS C, or the two machines can be operated independently offline. Thanks to this unique hybrid option, label printers remain highly flexible and can avoid downtimes while also benefiting from cost-efficient production. The new Gallus ECS 340 with “Plus” update package to boost cost-efficiency The new Gallus ECS 340 with “Plus” update package was another big hit. This package offers the following six productivity-boosting innovations: 1) A screen printing unit, 2) more powerful UV curing, 3) a secondary rail system, 4) new unwinding and rewinding equipment and a foil kit for monofoil substrates, 5) a software update with a higher maximum machine speed and 6) a new touchscreen user interface. These substantial further developments – the result of close cooperation with Gallus customers – enable label printers to

provide a better customer service, extend their range of applications and significantly boost their cost-efficiency. Rush for Gallus Screeny Genuine screen printing plates Hundreds of visitors also made use of the vouchers distributed prior to the

Tweens, which are shorter folded signatures in thread-sewn book blocks, can be variably positioned and provide high added value.

Innovative Product Ideas Featuring Shorter Folded Signatures E TWE¦ENMC from Muller Martini Revolutionizes World Premiere: Thread Sewing Muller Martini has set the stage for countless new and exciting ideas for thread-sewn products: thanks to the TWE¦E NMC option, smaller folded signatures can now also be stitched in a book block using the Ventura MC book sewing machine. From simple advertising messages to sophisticated coupon booklets or maps in guide books, with the new retrofittable TWE¦ENMC option smaller folded signatures can also be stitched in a book block. “Such shortened signatures, called tweens, provide great added value,” explains Jürgen Noll, Managing Director Marketing und Services of Muller Martini Book Technology GmbH. “They lend themselves for example to high-quality inlays in photo books or art books, or to conveying knowledge in textbooks in an interesting way.” New product ideas also arise from the possibility of stitching in signatures with different fold types, such as a double-parallel fold or a zigzag gatefold. The Ventura MC is the first book sew-

ing machine on the market that is capable of stitching products featuring signatures in different sizes and positions. An additional servo drive in the sewing saddle enables the tweens to differ both in length and width and to be variably positioned in the book block. “Thanks to the motion control drive design, the lug chain adjusts independently to the different sizes and the tweens can be processed entirely automatically,” adds Noll. Easy to Retrofit The TWE¦E NMC option was first un-

veiled at China Print 2013 in Beijing and attracted so much interest among visitors that many spontaneous purchases were made. New machines are already fitted with the new solution, and it is easily retrofittable on machines from the 2/11 series and onwards. For Ventura MC machines with an older year of manufacture, it is necessary to check individually whether an upgrade is possible. World Premiere: The Ventura MC from Muller Martini is the first book sewing machine than can stitch in signatures of different sizes with accurate positioning.

Management/General

Made in China: It's a different wide-format world CHINA HAS SOME VERY BIG PRINTING AMBITIONS. The current five-year government economic plan reportedly calls for print shows to be drupa-like by 2016. Judging by the 2012 Shanghai International Print, Packaging and Paper Expo, this is a realistic goal, but it certainly promises to be an interesting quest. Let’s take a closer look at this amazing laboratory of change. Apple will sell almost twice as many iPhones in China vs. the U.S. in 2012—and at a premium, too. When considering the printing industry, however, we have to factor in gross domestic income per capita. Although Apple is projected to sell 35 million iPhones in China, it is addressing only

the top 3% of the population with high incomes. Print is a more democratized product, affordable to the many hundreds of millions of residents who cannot afford tablet PCs and smart phones. China’s high literacy rate, coupled with rising incomes, should create growing demand for newsprint, magazines and book printing.

Environmental concerns have fueled a fascination with inkjet technology. The general consensus is that if China does not become involved in inkjet technology it will lag behind. Efforts to make its own ink jet printhead technology seem to have stalled; the current focus appears to be mainly on integration.

GOING GREENER For many years, the Chinese perceived pollution as the price of growth. But in recent years, pollution has become a national security issue. Concerns about lack of fresh drinking water, poor air quality, and safe food supply have risen to the forefront in an urgent and direct manner.

FIELD GUIDE TO EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS China has built an eco-system of suppliers that western countries can’t rival. While it is probably impossible to manufacturer electronic consumer goods in a timely fashion outside of China, production printing doesn’t require millions or even thousands of units. Generally speaking, China

Print World Asia • 10/2013

Management/General 39 has three kinds of printing equipment manufacturers: government owned, super capitalistic and foreign owned. GOVERNMENT OWNED Manufacturers such as Beijing Founder typically are well capitalized and focused on R&D. Because they tend to be non-profit driven, their commercial success may not be a metric. Often, these entities enjoy a captive market among book, newspaper and magazine publishers since the government also owns those outlets. SUPER CAPITALISTIC These entrepreneurs are often opportunistic and undisciplined in business process. They represent a growing group of printing equipment suppliers, mostly in non-publishing applications such as wide-format print. Many are start-ups created by former engineers at larger printing equipment manufacturers, looking to get rich quick. But few ever break out of the pack to reach annual revenues above $5 million and fewer still can claim more than $30 million in annual revenue. This group never accumulates enough capital to invest in marketing, sales, and service beyond emerging markets, and often sacrifices improved product quality in favor of producing the lowest priced printers. FOREIGN-OWNED CONTRACT PRINTING EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS Our final category includes Taiwanese and Hong Kong-owned contract

manufacturers such as FoxxCon (the producer of most of Apple’s products and soon most of HP’s consumer inkjet printers and PCs). They know how to produce high- and consistent-quality products. They, too, are driven by low cost, but through economies of scale rather than through sacrificing quality. They have little brand presence of their own (so far) and seem to have little interest in manufacturing production printers, as the volumes are low. THE BOTTOM LINE China is attempting to develop a strategic position in the printing equipment manufacturing business. Its core digital printing equipmentmanufacturing business today is in wide-format graphics, where the business model differs greatly from the western world: All margins have to be earned from hardware, because the Chinese manufacturers don’t capture ink annuities. Ultimately, this model may be unsustainable since the business can’t scale and reinvest.

How can China raise its position on the world stage of graphics printing equipment manufacturing? Acquiring leading western printing equipment manufacturers (such as Shanghai Electric’s Goss acquisition) is one option. But few analog printing equipment manufacturers are in a position of growth. Acquiring a digital production printer manufacturer would likely be expensive/impractical (scaling up would require buying lots of small inkjet integrators). GOING BEYOND PRINT? Perhaps, and this is sheer conjecture, the Chinese vision for taking a leading position in print extends well beyond document and graphics. With most consumer electronic products produced in China, owning/controlling the ability to print plastic electronics for printing of solar panels, flat screen displays, etc. may be the strategic vision for print.

Esko introduces new Kongsberg C digital finishing platform The first model of a completely re-engineered platform is a unique 3.2-meter wide system. Powerful, rigid, carbon-composite traverse technology assures exceptional precision and speed.

fully-featured super-wide digital finishing systems. “This is not scaled up from a light duty finishing table – it’s a completely re-engineered platform after a decade of the highly successful and well-known Kongsberg X-series,” comments Tom Naess, Esko Product Manager CAM. “We wanted to make sure that it was designed for 24/7 production and semi-industrial environments. Along with substantial flexibility, the new, wider format perfectly fits modern 3.2-meter wide format printers, working with wide rolls and wide sheets.”

Acknowledging that the wide format digital printing world continues to rapidly escalate productivity that requires faster turnaround times on an ever increasing variety of materials, Esko (www.esko.com) answers that trend with the introduction of a

completely new Kongsberg digital finishing system, the “Kongsberg C”. The first model of this new platform, the Kongsberg C64, is first demonstrated at the 2013 SGIA Expo in Orlando, Florida (October 23-25). Kongsberg C systems are the first

A large, complete finishing system for large, diverse jobs The Kongsberg C64 model works with 126” wide x 126” long (3.210 mm by 3.200 mm) materials, perfectly fitting modern wide format printers. Also available is the Kongsberg C60 model, accommodating 126” wide x 63” long (3.210 mm x 1.600 mm) sizes. Covering more than 10 feet across the table, a unique, extremely rigid, carboncomposite traverse beam assures excellent precision and supports high speed, fast acceleration, high quality creasing and exclusive, powerful 3kW milling capabilities. Thus, the Kongsberg C always produces high quality finishing results, with no left/ right/middle variances due to traverse bending. Unlike other super-wide finishers, the Kongsberg C does not decelerate with demanding materials, handling the most complex jobs without

Print World Asia • 10/2013

Packaging Technology

sacrificing quality or throughput. The Kongsberg C stands for Capability, Capacity, Consistency, Choice and Complete: Capability: the Kongsberg C processes the widest variety of materials of any super-wide finisher, working with an extensive range of finishing applications and substrates from paper and textiles to corrugated up to triple-wall thickness (unique to the Kongsberg C), fluted board, plastics, aluminum composites, and more. Capacity: it has the highest throughput of any super-wide digital finisher. The Kongsberg C is also the only superwide finisher to offer a 3kW continuous duty high-performance milling unit. Consistency: the Kongsberg C series delivers the same performance every time, even on the most demanding materials or the most complex jobs. Choice: there’s no need to choose between size and productivity. The Kongsberg C offers both, eliminating the necessity to own dedicated digital finishers for different applications. Complete: Esko offers a full solution consisting of hardware, software, bits & blades and services. The Kongsberg C series brings unmatched versatility with four “power” tool units and a full assortment of "speed” tools. The table can be upgraded to fit production needs

as a business grows with additional tooling, a conveyer feed system, roll feeder unit and more. A versatile finishing system to fulfill all production requirements Just as impressive, the Kongsberg C offers exceptional versatility for all sign, display and packaging applications. New tool covers offer clean, fast changing of the full range of Kongsberg XP tooling. Customers no longer need to invest in different digital finishing devices for different applications. With its combination of dexterity and power, the Kongsberg C, one machine fits all production needs – rolls, sheets, corrugated, milling – offering a more effective and smaller footprint solution than having to own multiple systems. Design and ergonomics: an easy to use finishing system The new solution has not only been reengineered, also the design has been completely reworked to apply to highest standards of industrial design and meet the operator’s needs for ergonomics and safety. For a machine so large, the Kongsberg C is remarkably easy to use – from the new, simple interface to the ease of replacing interchangeable tools on the table, helping to reduce operator error. The new workstation mounts on any corner of the machine. A new maneuvering concept places an integrated joystick and operator panel

on the traverse. It can be mounted on either side of the table. In fact, to make it easier for another operator, a second operator panel can be added. For easy loading and unloading, the new conveyor option can be manually jogged in both directions. “We have consulted our customers before and during the development of this new table and we are convinced they will appreciate to see that Esko now has the fastest, most productive solution at a super-wide width, with the greatest versatility in its size class,” concludes Steve Bennett, Esko Vice President, Digital Finishing Business. “The new Kongsberg C leapfrogs competitive tables on many ways. It simply enables us to provide the best value solution in this category.”

Three New Inks Specifically Designed

Videojet Technologies Inc., a world-leading manufacturer of coding, marking, and printing products, today announced three new Ultra High Speed (UHS) inks for its line of UHS continuous ink jet printers. These new inks – V516-D, V517-D and V530-D – join a family of ten other UHS compatible inks that have been extensively tested across a broad range of print speeds and environmental condition extremes. Designed for optimal drop formation, Videojet UHS inks are held to the highest quality control standards, which means customers can experience top print quality at the highest speeds. “These three new UHS inks had their debut at Pack Expo 2013 where we presented our recently released Videojet 1620 and 1650 UHS continuous ink jet printers. We developed the UHS inks to provide exceptional coding quality that our high speed application

customers have come to rely on,” said John Kirschner, Videojet supplies business manager. “Our family of UHS inks continues to grow with the addition of these three new inks – each specially engineered for unique coding applications.” V516-D Black Retort-Resistance Ink Designed for better code durability, this black, non-colour changing retortable ink can withstand tough high-temperature steam/water bath processes commonly used in cooking prepared food containers after filling and sealing. Foods such as vegetables, beans and baby foods requiring a retort process are cooked in a variety of containers such as metal cans and foil/plastic pouches. Challenges to ink survivability come from these foods undergoing high-temperature, highmoisture cooking processes, as well as being stacked throughout this process where codes come into contact with other containers. Typically dry in one to two seconds, V516-D ink provides manufacturers and retailers with easyto-read codes and improved adhesion, particularly on formed aluminum and metal alloy cans.

V517-D MEK-free, Thermochromic Ink Videojet’s V517-D thermochromic ink changes from black to blue when coding onto heat-processed food containers made of a variety of metal, plastic and glass substrates. This ink provides good durability as well as superior adhesion through the rigorous cooking/retort process. Additionally, V517-D can serve as a general purpose black ink for food and pharmaceutical applications. Low solvent volatility of the ink and its associated make-up fluid means V517-D can offer a low total cost of ownership through lower make- up consumption. V530-D MEK-free, Fast Dry General Purpose Black Ink With excellent adhesion on plastics, metals, paper, wood, ceramic and glass, V530-D is a patented high performance ink that comes in an environmentally-friendly MEK-free formula. V530-D is specially designed for printing onto various hard-to-code plastics such as untreated polyethylene and polypropylene substrates typically found in the food packaging industry. Ideal for high speed production lines that require a fast dry time, V530-D can also endure cold temperatures resulting from storage in commercial freezers and refrigerators. It can withstand abrasions caused by productto-product contact during stacking and production line transport.

Wide Format / Proofing Technology

UV or UV LED? That is the Question The UV inkjet printing industry has undergone a revolution with the launch of UV-LED lamps. These lamps are designed to provide functional lives that are 10 times longer than UV lamps. They last up to 10,000 hours, and thus offer much lower operational and maintenance costs than their UV counterparts. The longer life of the UV-LED lamps is but one of myriad factors that must be considered by print service providers contemplating whether to invest in UV or UV-LED technology. That determination will ultimately rest on such issues as the size of the shop, the volume of print, the types of substrates being used, and the owner or manager’s commitment to the environment, among others. In the pages ahead, we look at the differences between UV and UV-LED, why those differences matter, and what factors must be weighed in buying decisions. Differences Between UV and UV LED In addition to the long life of UV-LED lamps, UV-LED is different from UV

in a number of important ways, reports Steven Tu, product manager for Ivine, CA’s Roland DGA Corporation. “They also emit very little heat, which makes them more versatile with respect to the media they support than conventional UV curing systems,” he says. “Consider also that UV-LED lamps do not need any warm-up time, so they are ready to start printing immediately after being powered on. They are also smaller, more energy efficient, and completely ozone free, making them a safe alternative to conventional UV lamps.” Many UV-LED printers, including Roland VersaUV printers and printer/ cutters, support a broad array of substrates, including everything from

PVC, leather, paper and board stocks, to foils, BOPP, PE, and PET film, Tu says. When it comes to specialty applications, his company’s most compact UVLED printers print directly on threedimensional objects, such as smart phone cases, industrial and consumer products, promotional items and even iPads. “The ability to print on such a wide range of surfaces allows you to branch out into new markets, from package prototyping and labels to signage, interior décor, personalization and specialty graphics,” Tu reports. Jeffrey Nelson, business development manager for inkjet solutions with Fujifilm North America Corporation Graphic Systems Division in Hanover Park, IL, says the difference between the two technologies is obvious and comes down to how the ink is cured. “UV-LED uses a low-energy light source, and the lamps are expected to last the life of the press,” he says. “And because it’s low energy, it is low heat, so it works really well for thinner substrates, which can be very volatile.” On the other side of the equation, with UV technology the ink is UV cured, rather than LED cured, he says. The chief benefit is speed; the equipment can run much faster using conventional halide lamps. Fujifilm’s Onset S50, for instance, can produce more than 150 5x10-foot boards hourly. “It would be difficult to achieve speeds like that with a UV LED today,” Nelson says.

Print World Asia • 10/2013

Wide Format / Proofing Technology

Another difference shows up in cost. The cost of lamps is lower in UV than in UV-LED, he adds. As that cost differential drops, UV-LED will continue to make inroads in faster presses, even in industrial applications. A final contrast between the two technologies is that UV-LED is a greener solution, due to not requiring as many bulbs to be replaced and lower energy usage, Nelson says. According to Jim Cain, director of sales digital with Polytype America Corporation in Mahwah, NJ, which limits production to UV machines at present, the big difference is the curing power, as well as the light spectrum given off by the machine. UV machines have broader curing power, he says.

included in the company’s VersaUV printer line.

and we anticipate the continuing,” Nelson says.

These features in particular allow PSPs to automate the production of complex graphics from start to finish, Tu reports. “Find out if the printer comes with bundled RIP software and color management tools such as spot color libraries,” he says. “In the end, there is no substitute for versatility.”

The traditional UV bulb has a broader light spectrum, while UV-LED has a tight and more controlled spectrum. “What that means is more curing power out of the traditional UV, rather than the UV-LED,” he adds. “The UV-LED is almost like a straight line, a more confined space, as opposed to the traditional UV lamp, which has a broader and deeper curing power.”

For his part, Nelson says UV or UVLED buyers should consider several factors before purchasing. One is the price-performance ratio of the equipment. Buyers should determine how fast the equipment will run, and for how much.

PSPs should also consider their capacity or production needs. If theirs is a smaller operation, that would lend itself more to UV-LED. Customers looking for an industrial speed press, which would typically be a larger screen or offset printer, would be better suited to UV printers, Nelson advises. A limited number of companies currently manufacturer and/or market the UVLED, Cain says. Most manufacturers are still focusing on UV. If the work being done is fine art work calling for substantially less volume, UVLED may be a better choice. But for traditional print shops, including commercial printers, graphics and reprographics shops, standard UV is the wiser selection, he says.

In addition, LED is an up-and-coming product that unlike UV has yet to be proven in the industry, Cain asserts, noting, “It’s still in its early stages.” Consider Before Purchasing According to Tu, the very first considerations to keep in mind are the substrate on which you will print, and the primary applications for the printer. Next, consider the printer’s ease of use, operational costs and maintenance requirements, he says. In addition, Roland DGA recommends that PSPs select a printer that offers advanced features, such as specialty inks and integrated contour cutting, both

Having a UV-LED printer in your production environment will allow you to increase your profits, take your business in new directions and offer customers countless new products for a better overall value proposition, he adds.

But in some classes of printers available today, there is not a UV-LED printer available. “It’s certainly changed fairly dramatically in the last 24 to 36 months,

evolution

Cain won’t hesitate a guess as to how soon UV-LED will become more mainstream. “Everybody is experimenting with UV-LED,” he says. “And until they get better curing power, and more speed, and more production volume, it’s not going to come close to overtaking UV.”

New Solutions for LargeFormat Print Providers HP today announced upgrades, certifications and workflow solutions for its large-format sign and display portfolio, helping print service providers (PSPs) grow their businesses and explore new markets. In recent years, many large-format print shops have transformed their business models, offering new highvalue applications and seeking to avoid commoditisation. This transformation has been driven by technology advances that help PSPs move beyond sign and display to a diverse range of applications. No matter the market, clients increasingly demand highquality output with faster turnaround times, requiring PSPs to embrace the flexibility and versatility of digital to remain successful. "Large-format PSPs are working in a changing marketplace, challenging them to step outside of their application comfort zone to meet client demand," said Xavier Garcia, vice president and general manager, Large-Format Sign and Display Division, HP. "HP is introducing a variety of new offerings at SGIA to help our customers meet production demands, while also empowering them to confidently move into high-value markets, such as retail, interior décor and fleet graphics." News Komori Sponsors Eco Zone at Ipex 2014 Informa Exhibitions today announces that Komori Corporation will participate in Ipex 2014 as Sponsor of the Eco Zone. Part of the event’s rich educational content and features programme, the Eco Zone will educate visitors on the ecological and business-related advantages of reducing their environmental impact.

all of which are important presentation solutions. “We used to outsource all of our print work, but recently we saw a need to invest in a wide format printer in order to deliver the colour accuracy and quality our customers expect in timeframes that we can control,” explains Maarten van der Heijden, owner of Maxximap. “To that end we investigated the options available and chose Fujifilm’s Acuity Advance Select X2.” The Acuity Advance Select models build on all the advantages of the successful Acuity Advance platform, but with a variety of new features that improve production efficiency and versatility. One of the key developments is the inclusion of eight independent ink channels, which also include white and clear options, along with the standard CMYK ink set. “One of the most important reasons we chose the Acuity Advance Select X2 was the availability of white and clear ink as print options which can be used to create a much wider range of end applications,” continues Maarten. “The ability to print on black and colour materials also gives us a competitive edge.”

Maarten also explains Maxximap’s decision to purchase the X2 model (2.5 x 3.05m) instead of the standard size (1.25 x 2.5m): “We tend to work with large materials – one of our recent orders happened to be for a piste map sign for a ski resort. The X2 model’s size is ideal for working with larger materials and it also allows uninterrupted production, as we can print at one end whilst setting up a new job at the other. The ability to switch between rigid and roll media is also beneficial to our business, as we work with a variety of materials ranging from PVC and wallpaper to corrugated carton and other thick substrates.” When asked what the future holds in store, Maarten explains: “Our business is growing. We’ve already seized new opportunities in the past few months and we are gradually expanding into other sectors, such as B2B and Point Of Sale (POS). Our aim is to continue providing assurance to our customers that we will help them present their products in the most creative and effective way possible in what has become a very competitive market. With the Acuity Advance Select X2, we are confident we will achieve our objective.”

Neil Sutton, Managing Director of Komori UK, comments: "We were approached by the Ipex 2014 Management team to discuss our H-UV printing technology and showcasing it in the the Ipex Eco Zone, so Komori have taken the decision to sponsor this feature. This will be an excellent platform for Komori to continue to build on its market leading position for the supply of low emission, eco-friendly and innovative H-UV printing." “We are delighted that Komori made the decision to participate in Ipex, and are confident that commercial printers from around the world will benefit significantly from their offset technology and eco-expertise,” comments Wayne Beckett, Sales Director of Ipex 2014. “As the role of print continues to evolve in the multi-channel marketing communications mix, it is important to dispel any misperceptions in the industry about its environmental impact. HP Grows Designjet T-series Portfolio with New High-end eMultifunction Large-format Printer HP today announced the HP Designjet T2500 eMultifunction Printer (eMFP), which brings new customer-driven ergonomic design features to a single, compact device that scans, prints and copies to help collaborative teams work together better and faster. For architects, engineers, construction (AEC) and geographic information system (GIS) firms, as well as government agencies and enterprise customers,

scanning large-format colour documents is one of the most effective ways to review and communicate changes. However, large-format scanning is a time-consuming and complex process. In addition, many scanners today are still separate devices from in-office, largeformat printers. The HP Designjet T2500 eMultifunction Printer features an integrated scanner, which makes it easy to scan and send sketches to team members, as well as incorporate hand-annotated changes. Additionally, the printer's ergonomic design relieves traditional pain points with features like an integrated output stacking tray, two-roll front media loading with smart roll switching and an intuitive touch screen that allows the complete monitoring of the printer. The printer also offers a wider variety of media options with the ability to print up to A0 print sizes. "We are in constant communication with our clients as projects develop, and we often work through multiple rounds of reviews before a plan is final," said Debbie Garcia, project coordinator, Inland Engineering Services, Inc. "Previously when clients provided changes, we had to scan in sections at a time. With the HP Designjet T2500 eMultifunction Printer, we can now easily scan large plans that include hand-noted changes and immediately update the design file, which helps move projects forward faster and also allows us to work with our clients in real time." New HP Designjet printer design follows customer feedback Designed together with customers from around the world, the HP Designjet T2500 eMultifunction Printer has a 30 per cent smaller footprint than its predecessor.(1) This allows to minimise precious office space requirements. The integrated output stacking tray delivers flat, collated prints, helping teams stay organised between multiple projects. With two-roll, front media loading, customers can print projects that require different paper types and sizes without having to change the roll. Additionally, the intuitive, full-colour touch screen also gives users added control with the ability to manage job queues, track print costs, print borderless images(2) and view true print previews.

News Fosco, Hayes & Hurdley. "When we were shown print samples of the new orange ink, we were immediately impressed by the stunning impact it gave images and recognised this as a strong USP (Unique Selling Point) for us." Launched in April, the HP Scitex FB7600 Color Pack can add two new colours (Orange and Light Black) to the six-colour set of HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Presses and upgraded HP Scitex FB7500s. These additional colours can be installed together or added incrementally.

Built to increase efficiencies for mediumsized and enterprise businesses, the new design and functionalities of the HP Designjet T2500 eMultifunction Printer build on the recent introduction of the HP Designjet T920 and T1500 ePrinters. "We have seen a great shift in how architecture, engineering and construction firms work, evolving from teams operating out of a central location to a rising number of remote workgroups with increased firm-to-firm collaboration," said Ramon Pastor, vice president and general manager, Large Format Printing, HP. "Extending HP's new design features to a multifunction device will help improve productivity and enhance all types of working environments." Fosco’s First in EMEA to Install Orange Ink Option on HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press HP today announced that Fosco Hayes & Hurdley Ltd (Fosco's), of Birmingham, has become the first large format print service provider in Europe to install the recently-announced Orange Ink option for enhancing colour quality on one of

its HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Presses. The new Orange Ink gives a gamut volume increase of ten per cent with a PANTONE® Colour coverage increase of six per cent and an overall ability to achieve seven per cent more corporate colours.(1) When printing for companies using orange in their corporate or brand colours, this capability can be a powerful differentiator. "The flatbed converting market is fairly crowded, making competition for campaigns increasingly difficult," said David Nicholas, managing director,

"We use our two HP Scitex FB7600 presses to print mostly on EB flute, Corex and card," explains Nicholas. "While the press can handle films and paper, we usually use our other printers to do that. However, sometimes, scheduling means that printing jobs have to be moved and it's good to have the ability to move jobs easily." Fosco's has a large machine park of HP presses and printers. In addition to its two HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Presses, it has two HP Scitex XL1500 Industrial Printers, an HP Scitex TJ8350 Industrial Press, an HP Latex 850 Printer(2), an HP Designjet Z6200 Printer and an HP Indigo press 5500. News the ability to undertake a wide range of jobs, attract customers as well as giving us production flexibility," Nicholas continued. "The real drivers now are the FB7600 presses. The rise in demand for short-run rigid products and our ability to offer value-added services like POP/ POS design and retail-ready packaging attracts new work. We fully expect new Orange Ink and the print quality it delivers to enhance our position as a print service supplier." While the HP Scitex FB76000 Industrial Presses are able to print runs of one, the core of Fosco's work is in the 50 - 200 sheet range. "We've done runs up to 1000," Nicholas said. "And, we never know what's coming in the door: we could get an order at 13.00 today and it would have to be out by 17.00. "The new Orange Ink adds vibrancy to all the colours; we think it's fantastic," Nicholas concluded. "We are looking forward to going to customers and putting what we've done up to now next to what we can do with the new Orange Ink - they will be amazed!"
