13th Asian Print Awards 2015
The only regional awards of its kind in Asia The annual Asian Print Awards was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the print and packaging industries across Asia. With more than half the world’s population represented in this fast growing area, communication in the form of printed matter links Asia’s diverse cultures. It is imperative that such print achievements do not go unrecognised, especially among the population base that Asia enjoys. The Awards are judged on a wholly quality-oriented set of criteria to ensure that fair play is enacted at all times. The Independent Judging Panel comprises highly qualified personnel from within Asia and around the world. The independent judging panel has no knowledge of the actual entrants details. ALL ENTRIES ARE NUMBER-CODED. Entries must be commercially produced work. The Asian Print Awards is the only regional print quality competition of its kind in Asia. Supported by leading industry-supply companies, any progressive quality print house should enter and prove that they are the best - by winning the Gold, Silver or Bronze award. Proving pride in quality awareness is what customers love to see. It’s not just empty words, you can prove it.
Make a note in your diary now! The “Event” for 2015 is the Asian Print Awards night, join us in Singapore If your company wins an award, a representative(s) from your company MUST be present in Singapore to receive the award on stage, we will not send any awards to you if you are absent!

Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Unveils Integrated Customer Experience Center in Thailand The new center features a collaborative approach to help customers in the production printing industry explore new capabilities and grow their business. By Sha Jumari. On 1 September 2015, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific officially opened the doors to its new Integrated Customer Experience Center in Bangkok, Thailand. The 3,600-square meter facility will serve customers across the Asia Pacific region. The center aims to aid customers in discovering new or improved methods of delivering value to their own clients while addressing print and communication needs.
“The key focus of this center is to have our regional customers expand their business into new segments and markets by collaborating with our team to develop and explore new print applications using Fuji Xerox technology,” said Masashi Honda, president and CEO, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. Fuji Xerox’s full suite of production printing capabilities is available at
the center to facilitate the close collaboration in a simulated customer environment: “The Integrated Customer Experience Center is not actually a production showroom. We want this facility to be able to duplicate the environment of our customers’ customers. Customers will be able to benchmark and conduct end-to-end application testing in this facility to help discover new opportunities to grow their business,” Honda added. The digital colour printing market in Asia Pacific grew by 4% in 2012 and has been projected to grow by 8.3% in 2017. By 2021, it is estimated that there will be more than 1.2 trillion digital colour pages printed per year.

“As a market leader, it is our task to nurture and develop the Asia Pacific market, and we hope to do that from this facility. Some of our regional customers today are still focused on their traditional business, and it is our responsibility at Fuji Xerox to show them what other opportunities they could consider with our technology platforms,” said Honda.
web-integration workflows, design, pre-press and print production, the staff are also equipped to provide consultation on ways to increase efficiencies and explore new opportunities. The center will also hold Business development workshops and schedule seminars focusing on Fuji Xerox’s range of business solutions and software.
“Thailand is easily accessible and affordable in terms of maintenance. This country also has a rising pool of creative professionals who deeply understand the print industry, which is crucial for us to develop the market,” Honda continued.
“I’m happy to see this facility set up in Thailand! Thailand is one of the fastest growing markets. By setting up this centre, we are showing our customers that Fuji Xerox is a frontrunner in the industry. This is most important for us,” said Honda. “I look forward to having all the customers from
At the center, customers will have the opportunity to explore adjacent markets by experimenting and developing various print applications, such as photo books, book publishing and direct mail. For example, a company that traditionally prints transactional-type documents such as invoices can visit the center and use it to test-trans-promotional materials. Customers are also able to carry out media testing on different substrates. The center has professional and technical personnel to help customers conduct end-to-end solution testing. Besides being able to provide expertise in areas such as color management,
our region, even Australia and New Zealand, to visit and make full use of our facility to develop their businesses and enhance their capabilities.”

Launch of the New 1400 Inkjet Color Continuous Feed Printing System In conjunction with the opening ceremony of the Integrated Customer Experience Center, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific introduced the 1400 Inkjet Color Continuous Feed Printing System, single-engine duplex. Catered to the Asia Pacific market, the high performance and compact entrylevel press is targeted at the data and commercial printing markets. “Traditionally, inkjets require high print volumes and a high capital investment to enter this business sector. The new 1400 single-engine duplex system has a very small footprint and is profitable for shorter average monthly print volumes than the standard twin engine 1400,” said Honda. “This is an opportunity for our legacy customers to move into the inkjet space. These are typically companies that want the benefit of inkjets, which boast high speed, high quality and low running costs, but haven’t had
the capital until now to support a big purchase and make the machine truly profitable.” The 1400 Inkjet Color Continuous Feed Printing System (Model-S2H) is space-efficient. Compared to dualengine inkjets, this single-engine system extends affordability and size, making it an entry-level purchase for customers exploring the high-end inkjet printing business. The highspeed, high-resolution full-colour printer is scalable to suit various business needs from basic print to high-volume data jobs at up to 100 meter/minute. “One of these machines has the potential to replace two or three toner devices and rationalize a customer’s current fleet of existing equipment and free up space for other uses. It’s also an opportunity to see improved efficiency in the business. These solutions have very high uptime, are incredibly reliable and provide enormous productivity benefits,” said Honda. “It's the first day we’ve shown this to the market and we’ve already had a huge amount of interest. We see a lot of potential for this 1400 press for this industry,” added Honda. “We have had some early engagements with customers in China and Australia, and there is a lot of interest for this press because it fulfills the brief of listening to what our customers need.” High Quality and Performance Equipped with a high-speed raster image processor (RIP) for concurrent output processing, the inkjet features the latest piezo print head technology. This technology produces sharp and smooth images up to 600x600 dots
per inch (dpi), similar to those in offset presses. This allows companies to create documents with clear characters and numbers, print high-quality images and sharp two-dimensional barcodes. This single engine inkjet printer offers users the option of duplex printing for paper width up to 254 millimeters, fitted with a unique paper path to enable one engine to print on both sides of the paper. The near-infrared dryer complements a cooling roller to enhance ink-drying performance, and an easy-to-use touch panel display and graphical user interface allow for operating and managing print jobs efficiently. Flexibility to Meet Different Needs Designed to meet the varied needs of each customer, the inkjet can be customized to match different business requirements, such as volume, performance and application type. Companies can enhance the basic model, ideal for entry-level customers, to a superior model according to their business needs. . Users of the 1400 can choose from a variety of preprocessing and finishing options, such as sheeting and folding. With this latest addition to its inkjet portfolio, Fuji Xerox now has the full range of inkjet products to support the growing demand for fast high-volume production, new applications and variable data printing. Businesses can now leverage on these inkjet solutions to fully address their requirements and better reach out to their customers in a very competitive market.

Agfa Graphics launches Attiro VHS, the top-speed clean-out unit for chemistry-free violet plates After the successful introduction of the Attiro clean-out unit earlier this year, Agfa Graphics now announces the Attiro VHS, built on the same revolutionary and patented cascade concept.
With an increased plate throughput speed of up to 3 m/min, the Attiro VHS easily handles plates from platesetters imaging up to 400 plates per hour, such as Agfa Graphics’ newest Advantage N-TR VHS. "The throughput numbers of Attiro VHS speak for themselves, especially for heavy-duty printers”, said Emiel Sweevers, Newspaper Segment Manager at Agfa Graphics. "They need high plate volumes and require high throughput speeds in the complete pre-press production." The Attiro and Attiro VHS are built according to a unique cascade design concept. There are three sections; the concentrated gum cascades from the third section into the second and later into the first. The gum is thus effectively reused three times, resulting
in minimal gum consumption yet maximal clean-out effect. It allows users to save on maintenance and gum while contributing to a more sustainable prepress process. When Attiro VHS with Attiro concentrated gum is used in combination with Agfa Graphics' chemistry-free plate, the true benefits of Attiro and the cascade concept become evident: Full maintenance is only required after 8.000 m² Minimal gum consumption for maximal clean-out effect Fully flat plate transport Less transport of gum bottles "At the WPE 2015, Agfa Graphics announces a series of new products. One of them is the new Attiro VHS,
but there is also the new chemistryfree violet plate N95-VCF and several improved features for the Advantage N platesetters and Arkitex Production workflow software," Emiel Sweevers continues. "We want to show our commitment to this industry, both for print and for mobile, with continuous innovations." Since 2011, when Agfa Graphics launched the N94-VCF plate, more than 70% of Agfa Graphics’ newspaper customers made the switch to its chemistry-free plate technology. Attiro VHS will make its global debut at the World Publishing Expo 2015 in Hamburg, Germany in October and will be available early 2016.

Management/General
International printing sector looks to the future with surprising optimism Initial results from the second "drupa Global Trends" report are showing sustained recovery from the recession with some surprising insights and positive feedback. The full report designed to highlight economic and operational trends in the worldwide print sector The results are all the more interesting as the survey itself, conducted in October 2014, was largely identical to the first "drupa Global Trends" report from February 2014. In addition this year a full survey was conducted amongst industry suppliers for the first time, ensuring a balanced picture of the global print market. Developments and important key data from the worldwide print sector – such as financial conditions, business climate,
outlook for the coming twelve months?’ was answered by 48 percent of service providers surveyed with expectations of an improvement in their companies’ economic situation, and only seven percent with a decline. The results from the worldwide supplier industry were similarly positive: 51 percent forecast an improvement, and only eight percent a decline.
investment plans and technologies used are given in detail and trends revealed. Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, Chairman of the Messe Düsseldorf Management Board summarises the key results of the study. "The generally upbeat picture reported by the expert panel surprised us,” says Dornscheidt.
“Both the print service providers and the international supplier industry gave a positive evaluation of the economic situation of their own companies as at October 2014. Even more surprising, however, was that the print and supplier industry is heading into 2015 with a very positive outlook.” The question ‘How do you see the
On the other hand, the results from individual performance measures surveyed show a much more mixed picture: 1 Sales for print service providers continue to rise – but are less pronounced. 39 percent of print service providers report an increase, whereas 22 percent show a drop in sales. This positive balance of 17 percent is well below the positive net balance of 27 percent from the first survey. 2. The margins for print service providers continue to fall. Almost half (43 percent) of the print service

providers surveyed report falling margins, while just 16 percent succeeded in increasing margins. Positive exceptions here are the markets of North America and the Middle East, where 29 and 28 percent reported increased margins. 3. Digital print is growing fast but is still a small percentage of turnover for most printers. As quickly as the share of digital printing in the overall print technology mix continues to rise, most turnover continues to be generated from traditional print. Only ten percent of the print service providers surveyed achieved more than 25 percent of their
2014 sales in digital printing (2013: 8 percent). 4. Print service providers are not turning to services outside the print sector. Often recommended as a new business area – but not yet realised in practice: Just 27 percent of the print providers surveyed achieved more than ten percent of their sales with services outside the print sector (e.g. asset management for customers, updating databases, etc.). Drawing an initial conclusion from the second "drupa Global Trends" report, those surveyed feel pretty positive –
even if some measures are still showing negative trends. This general optimism is supported by the investment plans cited both by print service providers and supplier firms. After all, only a forward-looking development strategy ensures a competitive edge and thus the future of the company. More than 1100 international decisionmakers from the print industry and their suppliers responded to the comprehensive survey in October 2014. The independent market research company Wissler & Partner (Switzerland) and Printfuture (UK) have – as with the first "drupa Global Trends" report and the first "drupa Global Insights" report – expertly evaluated and prepared the results. At the end of March the Executive Summary will be available as a free download in seven languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and Russian) as well as the entire version incl. the full figures in English for a price of EUR 249.00 online at www.drupa.de.

Manroland technology assists Chinese printing giant in achieving leaner production Competition in the Chinese printing industry is intense. With product prices dropping and the cost of materials and labour soaring, printing companies are achieving lower margins and in some cases reducing their manpower. One such Chinese organisation, Wing Fat Printing Co Ltd, has overcome such setbacks by implementing lean production in their numerous facilities. Lean production has financial benefits and has been key to the company's success. Wing Fat Printing was founded in Hong Kong in 1913, making it one of the oldest printers in the SAR and Mainland China. The company provides total printing and packaging solutions for tobacco, alcohol and pharmaceutical products. It also produces cigarette tipping paper, food-wrapping paper, metal cans and patented heat transfer film for decorative materials. They have a strong business network in Hong Kong and the Mainland, with factories in the SAR, Guangdong, Guangxi, Shanghai, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Henan and Shandong. Those factories are either wholly owned or joint ventures. As a company that attaches great importance to business growth, Wing Fat Printing invests much of its resource on developing management
systems - staff training, material procurement, production and quality. Software is also rigorously scrutinized to assist their employees in reaching the ultimate goal - lean production resulting in substantial cost savings. Network printing and management of multiple presse Companies who benefit from the advantages of network printing usually place great demands on the management of multiple presses. Wing Fat Printing is no exception. To do this, it employed Manroland‘s IntegrationPilot 2.0. technology. It prepares for and adjusts the print jobs of all the machines as well as collecting data and reports. Equally important, it presets the ink amount of all printing groups. IntegrationPilot 2.0 can easily edit and send out the print jobs. The Importance of Managing Business Process Change Utilise the ‘alien’ technique to effectively plan, manage and ease any business transformation in a company. Sha Jumari reports. When it comes to changing processes, policies or mindsets, one should have a clear plan to manage the change and look for opportunities to increase capability. Sha Jumari reports. In order to stay ahead in today’s rapidly changing business environments, companies have to evolve as well, to better adapt to transforming markets, consumer needs and policies and regulations. Fuji Xerox has had very dramatic business changes. The organisation used to have 72 call centres and 10 operating companies all across the region. Today, the company has just four hubs.
In addition, it changed its established customer service system from one focused on responsiveness and speed, to a revolutionary proactive approach. The new approach works on an issue resolution basis, to diagnose a problem before the customer even realises it. This system evolved customer satisfaction to customer loyalty. A recent survey revealed that out of its 22,500 customers in the Asia Pacific region, 97% recorded total satisfaction. “In running any projects or businesses, you need to have different perspectives,” said Martin Head, general manager for Channel Service Support, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. Speaking at Fuji Xerox DocuWorld 2015, Head explained how the company was able to seamlessly
Martin Head transition its processes, and how any company could do the same. “In this case, we take on the standpoint of an alien. If I were an alien, and I just landed on Earth, how would I go about doing this business now?” Head continued. “The main question the alien technique resolves simply is: If we were rebuilding our company, how would we do it differently?” Fuji Xerox had a common transaction, which was a 42-step process, and is being done many times a day: “This was a transaction that we have been doing for 30 years, it was ‘the way’,” said Head. “If we bring out that alien, and ask, would this make sense right now? It doesn’t, so we had to change.” As a result, Fuji Xerox was able to reduce the 42-step process to just three steps, which takes less than 30 seconds now. Through improving that particular process, the company was able to simplify the systems, eliminate a lot of now obsolete software and hardware, and even save in terms of licensing. “It’s also important to remember who the real competition is. They’re not your market competitors, I’m referring to internal competition. For example, when you have salespeople telling you why the customer will not go for the change, or administration telling you
Print World Asia • 9 2015
Digital Technology why this is not possible,” said Head, on the significance of identifying differing perspectives. In making an internal change, it’s also easy to lose track of how the change will benefit the customer, especially in dealing with internal competition. “When we are doing anything that changes a business process, we always have to think about the customer. Ask yourself, are we doing this change just for ourselves? What does this mean for the customer,” emphasised Head. “Ultimately, think about what the customer would want you to do. Adopt an outside-in thinking. Sometimes this simple step makes things very clear.” The 5-Step Change Management Process All of the business process changes Fuji Xerox underwent involves heavy shifts in the way the organisation thinks and works. When it comes to changing processes, policies or mindsets, one should have a clear plan to manage the change and look for opportunities to increase capability. “Change is not easy. We really need to change and shift the way our people think too. For us, we use a 5-step plan that we still use in every business
process change that we make,” said Head. 1. Pre-Engagement This first step involves engaging C-level executives, and identifying and aligning objectives: “Every country manager, CEO, or managing director, will have different needs and objectives for their markets. We need to align what we are doing with their local agendas and agree on the measure of success.” 2. Initial Engagement This step requires the identification and engagement of all stakeholders in order to further align local business objectives. “These would include the people who need to understand and explain the new processes down to the customers, such as the salespeople. They are the ones who will tell you what will what will not work,” explained Head. 3. Project Planning Once everyone’s internal objectives are on the same page, then can the project planning process commence. This would involve an activities timeline, a communication plan, contingency plan, and critical success factors. 4. Project Implementation The fourth step is in executing the
project plan. For Fuji Xerox, this required a time period of six to eight months. “This was a long business process change for us. It involved changes in technology, in our people, in communications with the customers. We had to put into action internal and external communications plans to reinforce the messaging of our transformation,” explained Head. 5. Post Go-Live Review “Once you go live, it doesn't end there. You need to review, and be able to answer the question: Did we actually achieve what we set out to do?” said Head. This final step includes on-going status updates on the as well as a review performance, to ensure that the plan is on the right track. “It’s also important to remember who the real competition is. They’re not your market competitors, I’m referring to internal competition. For example, when you have salespeople telling you why the customer will not go for the change, or administration telling you why this is not possible,”

KBA presents the ultimate in press technology in Bangkok The BITEC Exhibition Center in Bangkok opened its doors on 26 August for the four-day Pack Print International trade show shortly after the attack in the Thai capital. Bangkok will soon begin printing high-quality packaging at speeds of up to 18,000sph. The press, which is raised by 450mm (17.7in), will be equipped with VariDryBLUE dryers, inline colour density measurement and KBA QualiTronic professional sheet inspection system as demands for quality are rising constantly.
Just nine months ahead of the print industry’s internationally leading trade fair, Drupa, 231 exhibitors from 21 countries presented their products and services to a predominantly Asian crowd. The Koenig & Bauer Group (KBA) and its regional subsidiary KBA Asia Pacific were among the exhibitors. Some 15,000 visitors from 75 countries found out about the latest trends in the world of print. For the first time Italian subsidiary KBAFlexotecnica, responsible for KBA’s flexible packaging printing segment, was present at this show. A flexible web press from this KBA subsidiary based in Tavazzano will soon be installed in Thailand and a further press will be delivered to China. Flexotecnica aims to expand its position in the growing flexible packaging market further with the support of the KBA Group’s regional sales and service subsidiaries.
High-tech Rapida 106 and… Half, medium and large-format KBA Rapida sheetfed offset presses are already well established in commercial, book and packaging printing companies in Thailand and its neighbouring countries. Naturally these were the subject of great interest. In recent years these high performance machines from Saxony have been extremely successful in Thailand. Installations of medium-format presses from the Rapida 105 series have dominated. And even though Thai printing firms are currently holding back in terms of making investments, the first KBA Rapida 106 at T.C.P. on the edge of

Continental Packaging in Bangkok is to receive an eight-colour press with coater and UV drying. This installation also underscores KBA’s leading position in packaging printing. A customer from Myanmar ordered a four-colour A2+-format Rapida 66 at the trade show. Although stock market turbulence in China and the terror attack in Bangkok impacted on the show’s atmosphere and the investment climate in Southeast Asia, it was important for KBA to show its colours in the key market of Thailand four months after its large presence at Print China in Guangdong. Stefan Segger, managing director of KBA Asia-Pacific: “Our international business also knows less favourable times. It is important for us to show potential and existing customers regularly that we are there for them and are able to offer them new products and services with which they can survive in a highly competitive market.” Satisfied faces following the sale of a small-format Rapida to Myanmar. Goss marks 20 years leading press automation technology - Twentieth anniversary of Autoplate automatic platechanging - More than 2100 Autoplate units now running worldwide - Enabling technology for competing with sheetfed and gravure "Our M-600 experience made the wider press format possible with the same design, creating more opportunities for printers - and the larger the plate, the greater the benefits," comments Moioli. "One of the main goals achieved is reliability, proven by field experience with close to 100 percent plate change success.
Twenty years after Goss Autoplate technology was brought to market, Goss International is honoring a key milestone in the history of offset printing. Introducing reductions in makeready time, labor and expense, the Autoplate innovation has extended the web offset advantage and created opportunities across a wide range of sectors and applications. Goss Autoplate automatic platechanging was first introduced on the M-600 press in 1995, offering the ability to plate up an entire press in less than three minutes due to a simple, precision-engineered sequence. Plates were placed into cassettes on the printing units while the press was running or idle; then, at the push of a button old plates were automatically rotated off the cylinders and replaced by the new ones. All or any combination of plates could be changed in this way. According to Goss product manager, Jean-Pierre, Moioli, despite initial skepticism, live demonstrations at trade shows and open houses, together with field experience, rapidly established Autoplate technology as the flagbearer for web press automation. "The beauty of the system was - and
is - the simplicity of its operation made possible through precision engineering, without requiring extra cleaning or maintenance," explains Moioli. "With the realization that the shorter the run, the greater the benefit, came a freedom to explore run lengths beyond those traditionally associated with web offset and even to compete with sheetfed." Today, more than 2100 Goss Autoplate units are in operation on a range of commercial and newspaper presses worldwide, including M-600, Sunday 2000, 4000 and 5000, and Colorliner CPS press systems.
Most recently, as the single, most significant enabling technology of the Magnum Compact press, Goss Autoplate knowhow has led to a new era for newspaper printers and publishers. In reducing makeready time by as much as 90 percent, the Magnum Compact press lowers the break-even point of economical newspaper production. Combined with additional features such as consistent high quality, wide substrate flexibility, heatset options, and a versioning tool, this development provides the means to reach into new markets particularly for those that currently produce small- to mediumcirculation publications.
Non-stop edition change (NSEC) which ensures further time, energy and waste savings in makeready particularly for high-volume versioning;
"Through our decades of experience with Autoplate technology, we were able to develop a simple, cost-effective system entirely unique to this sector. In providing the ability to change plates in 30 seconds and to complete a full job changeover in less than five minutes, printers can fill the press with work even in the shortest production window," comments Eric Bell, director of Goss marketing.
Automatic Transfer (AT) printing for on-the-run edition changes, eliminating conventional makeready requirements in some applications.
"The breakthrough with the Magnum Compact press is a perfect example of the legacy of Autoplate technology in general," concludes Bell.
The ‘96-page' web offset press, creating new economies for very high-volume commercial printing and directly challenging the lower-volume gravure industry;

How Singapore SMEs can level up their print businesses The ICV and CDG government grants are initiatives Singapore businesses can leverage on to reach their next milestone. Sha Jumari reports. Growing a business can require a costly investment, especially for SMEs. For businesses located in Singapore, there are schemes by the government that can aid with the costs in order to encourage growth.
EnterpriseOne initiative managed by SPRING Singapore. The organisation conducts one-to-one complimentary consultation sessions, along with outreach events, seminars and conferences.
“There are more than 100 government schemes to develop key competency for long-term growth,” said Lim Hui Ping, business consultative advisor, SME Centre@SCCCI.
“We provide business advisory and diagnostic services, productivity and capability development assistance and of course, consultation on government grants,” explained Lim.
Speaking at a seminar at PrintPack+Sign 2015, Lim featured two assistance schemes dispensed by SPRING Singapore, the Innovation & Capability Voucher (ICV) and Capability Development Grant (CDG).
Local SMEs are perhaps more familiar with the Productivity and Innovation Credit (PIC), allotted by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore. This initiative allows businesses to enjoy 400% tax deductions up to $400,000, or 60% cash pay out up to $100,000, for investments in innovation and productivity improvements.
The SME Centre@SCCCI was jointly set up by SPRING Singapore and SCCI. It is part of the multi-agency
SMEs, or small and medium enterprises, are defined as companies that have an annual sales turnover of not more than $100 million, or an employee count not exceeding 200. To be eligible for the grants, the SME needs to be registered and operating in Singapore, with at least a 30% local shareholding. Innovation and Capability Voucher (ICV) This voucher encourages SMEs to step up in capabilities building. Each voucher is worth $5,000, and each SME is eligible to apply for up to 8 vouchers maximum. The vouchers can be used to upgrade business operations through consultacy in four areas: innovation, productivity, human resources, and financial management. Additionally, the ICV is able to support the implementation of productivity solutions under the categories of equipment & hardware, technical solutions & training, design & renovation, and intergrated solutions.

Management/General Business Excellence, Business Strategy Innovation, Enhancing Quality and Standards, Financial Management, Human Capital Development, Intellectual Property & Franchising, Productivity Improvement, Service Excellence, Technology Innovation. The CDG recently underwent enhancements. For grant support of $30,000 or less, the application process has been simplified with easier application forms and reduced documentation requirements. The CDG is currently valid for three years from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2018.
Each project has a maximum duration of six months. SPRING Singapore has a list of registered integrated solutions providers, although SMEs are not restricted to it for now. “Since July 2015, SPRING has updated their list integrated solutions providers. At this point of time, SPRING allows SMEs to purchase outside of this list if you have a preferred service provider,” said Lim. Lim added: “Seek approval on the project on the project before signing any contracts or starting on the project. The ICV claim, upon project completion, is paid directly to the service provider by SPRING Singapore.” An example of the ICV in use is from moving company, CYC Movers. The company used a paper-based timesheet system, and took 15 hours per month
to calculate the salaries of its workers. This system was conducive for illegible scribbling, wrongly recorded hours, and misplaced timesheets. This meant even more time and effort was wasted just to rectify the information. Utilising ICV, the company installed a radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology tracking system. This allows an on-site supervisor to use a smartphone in to read each employee’s unique RFID tag. This data is then transmitted wirelessly to a dedicated server that HR can access. This led to accurate recording of attendance and hours worked, to ultimately cutting costs. Capability Development Grant (CDG) For bigger scaled projects, SMEs can tap on to the Capability Development Grant (CDG). The CDG helps SMEs to develop capabilities across 10 key business areas: Branding & Marketing Strategy Development,
Unlike the ICV initiative, the CDG has no fixed grant quantum and can support up to 70% of the qualifying costs. CDG also has no fixed project duration requirements, so projects that take 1 to 2 years to complete can claim this grant. The CDG has a more customised project scope: “The scope is openended, and you’re allowed to source for your own consultants in the open market,” said Lim. An example of the CDG in use is by clothing company, Neptune Work Wear Pte Ltd. To better project its brand and vision, the company tapped on CDG for a brand management project. The company was able to engage a consultant for branding advisory, conducted market research and competitor analysis and developed a brand communication plan. As a result of the strengthened brand identity, the company recorded a doubling of sales thereafter. “Think about what you want to do for your business. There are many ways to do so; in terms of innovation, productivity, intellectual property and service excellency. There are even organisations to help with overseas ventures,” said Lim. “Be aware there are many government schemes to help SMEs with your businesses. If you are confused, seek advice. Most importantly, you need to take action. You are the key driver to your business and your company,” Lim concluded.

ASQ Labels goes digital ASQ Labels is currently expanding into new markets thanks to the wide colour gamut and high resolution printing capabilities of Domino’s N610i, UV digital ink jet label press. Based in Belgium, the company specialises in label printing for a variety of sectors, including high quality food and beverage brands, as well as providing flow-pack printing, wrappers and single-layer packaging.
ASQ Labels was founded in 1988 in Lummen, during a time when the Belgian government was incentivising new businesses in the area. By 1998 the labelling company had 45 employees and had relocated to a 2000 sq. metre property. ASQ originally serviced a wide range of markets, until the recent economic crisis forced the company to re-evaluate its focus. “We were a heavily sales-driven organisation that, until 2008, was successful in the automotive, transport, logistics and warehousing sectors,” recounts Raf Joos, CEO of ASQ Labels.
He continues: “That’s when we realised that high end food and beverage products would be a key area of interest, as there will always be a demand for a high quality label with eye-catching graphics to go with the product. Today we are heavily involved in the Belgian beer and chocolate sectors.”
to be able to print directly onto the standard substrate materials used by ASQ without the need for pre-coating; secondly, the system had to be able to print the high-resolution, bright images that ASQ’s customers expect to see on their product labels; thirdly, the requirement to print transparent labels.
Raf began looking into a UV ink jet solution in 2010, but initially was not convinced by the technology as it was still in its infancy. The system the company needed had to address three key requirements: first and foremost, the digital solution had
It was not until witnessing firsthand Domino’s N610i digital press at Labelexpo Europe 2013 that ASQ took notice of the possibilities that UV ink jet could bring. Raf continues: “When Domino invited us to their headquarters in the UK, we were

Packaging Technology given the opportunity to print a series of different label samples on a range of our standard flexo substrates. Not only were we impressed with the end result, we also realised that the press’ inclusion of opaque white would prove extremely useful for printing onto transparent materials. It is a very opaque white- it looks like it’s been screen printed. That was the moment we were won over by the Domino N610i.” The N610i operates at speeds of up to 75 metres (246ft) per minute with a 600dpi native resolution and is available in 4, 5, 6 and 7 colours. The highly opaque white ink which delivers a silkscreen-like finish is ideal for printing solids through to fine detail onto metallic and clear label materials. Elke Buckinx, Operations Manager at ASQ Labels, comments on the smooth transition period, as the company went from using flexo printing systems to employing the N610i for customer service. After just five weeks, we were producing labels for our customers. We have a mixture of new customers, and definitely new jobs are more colourful. We have moved a number of jobs over that we previously printed on flexo, such as short runs and we now print
several versions in one run, without the need to change the plates.” Wim Wouters, whom operates the N610i comments; “It’s very easy to use. There is little wasted paper, and when you reprint a job, the file is already there, and you always het the same colour, exactly like the first time you printed it.” Raf continues with an anecdote: “Belgium is well known worldwide for its beer. High-tech presses with up to 19 printing and finishing units Back in 2012, it was still quite a sensation when KBA announced the installation of a Rapida 106 with 19 printing and finishing units at Amcor Tobacco Packaging in Switzerland. In the meantime, investments in medium-format sheetfed offset presses with 10, 12, 14 or more units are no longer so unusual. And that is true for both packaging and commercial printers in many parts of the world. In 2013, for example, KBA delivered a 10-colour Rapida 106 in a doublecoater configuration, i.e. 14 printing and finishing units in total, to a Russian packaging printer. In that same year, the packaging company Yuri Gagarin in Plovdiv/Bulgaria purchased a similarly configured press with an additional facility for cold foil transfer. A further 14-unit Rapida went on stream in 2015 and is now producing high-quality covers for the Appl Group in Wemding. With four printing units and a drying tower ahead of perfecting, followed by six further printing units and a combination of drying, perforating and coating towers before the final extended delivery, it is almost 99ft (30 m) long.
USA: Long is beautiful Long presses are even more popular in the USA. In 2014 a packaging printer in Massachusetts received a Rapida 106 with a total of 15 printing and finishing units. The configuration with ten printing units, drying tower, coater, two further drying towers and a second coater is geared to high-quality inline finishing, as is the case with almost all long presses. The company has already been using an almost 131ft (40 m) long large-format Rapida with eight printing units, two coaters, three drying towers and a triple-length extended delivery, i.e. 13 printing and finishing units, for several years. Two sheetfed offset presses with a total of 28 units in one printing plant – that is indeed something special, even today.
The longest KBA Rapida 106 to date, with 19 printing and finishing units, has already been in use at Amcor Tobacco Packaging in Switzerland for the past three years
The next long Rapida 106 from KBASheetfed Solutions will already be setting off across the Atlantic soon. The press comprises six printing units and a coater plus drying tower before the perfecting unit, six further printing units, double-coating facilities with two intermediate drying towers and a three-section extended delivery, and is to be used to print commercial and advertising products for a print group with global operations. With its 18 printing and finishing units, the latest addition to the list of long Rapidas is almost the length of the legendary 19-unit press at packaging specialists Amcor in Switzerland. These extraordinary configurations underline the outstanding competence of KBA-Sheetfed Solutions when it comes to complex sheetfed offset installations. These are not presses “off the shelf”, but rather highly automated production systems which are tailored precisely to the requirements of a particular application and enable the user to remain successful with customer-oriented solutions in a competitive market.

Star performer in the rapidly growing market for sustainable printing Fujifilm’s Uvistar Pro8 roll-fed printer has proved itself a star performer for ecosubstrate innovator, ARIA Print Centres – the creator and manufacturer of ARIAFLEX™, a unique PE (polyethylene) environmentally-friendly fabric ideal for banners, billboards, signs and displays. A total of eight Uvistar printers have been ordered from Fujifilm by ARIA Print Centres - part of the YJ manufacturing group. So far, four have been installed across two ARIA Print Centres production sites – three in Selangor Darul Ehsan state in Malaysia and one in Dallas, Texas, where they have been used in a test production environment in combination with the ARIA-FLEX™ fabric over the past nine months. Three more Uvistar printers will be installed in Malaysia and one more in Dallas over the coming
months to meet increasing production demands. Craig Adams, president of ARIA, explains: “We chose the Uvistar because of its high speed, excellent quality and because the Uvistar printer is designed to handle the very lightweight PEFlex substrates that are manufactured by ARIA (www.aria.us.com). ARIAFLEX™ has been specifically engineered for the digital printing market and we believe it holds the key to a more sustainable future. It is a very
eco-friendly product made with 100% recyclable Polyethylene (PE) - a material that is a safer, durable alternative to PVC and performs exceptionally well, offering a smooth printing surface for vibrant, high quality results.” In the selection of the Uvistar Pro 8, Craig also sought the advice of Dr. Nicholas Hellmuth, publisher of the FLAAR Reports, for his strong evaluations of the printer: Nicholas and his team are one of the few impartial sources who have both a broad and deep technical knowledge of all the various printers, inks, and RIP and colour management systems: “There are many good UV printer brands, but Fujifilm took the time to test various ink and RIP settings until they had a perfect recipe that worked well on ARIA PE. Other printer brands either did not have the time for the tests, did not have a strong presence in Malaysia, or their UV inks were different and thus the results were inconclusive.”

Wide Format / Proofing Technology
Craig continues, “The overall cost per m2 of print is also essential to the viability of this project. The Uvistar proved to be the most cost effective solution by far for our particular set of applications. “Over the past few months, we’ve been using the first four of our eight Uvistar printers to rigorously test ARIAFLEX™’s compatibility with Uvijet inks and the Uvistar Pro8 platform and the results so far have been nothing short of outstanding. Over this time, we have produced an extensive range of products for our customers including one of the largest global outdoor media companies, which now has a selection of banners and signage out in the field produced on ARIA-FLEX™. Fujifilm’s Uvistar Pro8, together with the vibrant colours achieved through the use of Uvijet inks, delivers excellent image quality and high productivity. With a light colours ink set, it enables closeview, high value images to be printed, widening the range of applications to both high-volume outdoor and addedvalue indoor applications including exhibition graphics, point-of-purchase and other indoor displays. With two models - 3.5 metre and 5 metre - and a throughput speed of over 350m2/ hr, the Uvistar series has rigid and multi-roll media handling capabilities, is simple to operate and has a robust construction, making it ideal for even
the most demanding print production environments. Fujifilm has worked closely with ARIA Print Centres throughout the installation and product testing process, including building new bulk feeding systems to accommodate the unique attributes of the ARIA-FLEX™, something Craig says has been crucial to the overall success of the project. He continues: “PE is a natural replacement for PVC and a very exciting development for the industry, so it’s great to be working with Fujifilm, a global brand so well respected for its innovation in this field. This product has been a total of five years in development and the team at Fujifilm understands what we want to achieve and our commitment to it, and has worked closely with us to ensure maximum synergy between substrate, inks and machine. The result is a product that has exceeded ours and our customers’ expectations so far. I can
confidently say there has been no ‘buyer remorse’ following our investment in the Uvistar kit. It’s like a meeting of minds, and we’re very pleased to be working together with Fujifilm.” Another convert is CACTUS IMAGING in Australia. According to their President, Keith Ferrel, CACTUS got their first Uvistar about a year ago. Aside from the excellent print quality using ARIA, Keith says they are very pleased to find that their m2 cost is actually better than their expectations. Keith attributes this to efficiencies that are inherent to the system as a whole: the Uvistar printer, Fujifilm ink, and ARIA’s PE Flex perform synergistically to deliver an excellent product, quickly and consistently. And that assures quality while boosting output and lowering costs for CACTUS. Concludes Craig: “When green printing is the goal, it is all about developing the right synergy of substrate, printer, ink, and software.”

High Print Quality, Low Odour eco-solvent ink series Sun Chemical, the world’s leading manufacturer of printing inks and pigments, is today launching the Streamline ESL 2 range of eco-solvent inks, which have been designed specifically for use as a direct alternative to Roland Eco Sol Max II inks in the Roland Pro 4 (XF 640, XR 640, Versa Express RF 640 and Versa CAMM VSi) series of eco-solvent wide format printers.
Streamline ESL 2 is Sun Chemical’s latest addition to its Streamline product range to use the HPQ-LO (High Print Quality – Low Odour) eco-solvent chemistry platform, which offers a significant advantage for printers working in confined environments. The seven colour ink series includes CMYK with a revised nickel-free yellow ink, Light Cyan, Light Magenta and a new Light Black ink. ESL 2 has been perfectly colour-matched to the Roland Eco Sol Max II ink series, eliminating the need for re-profiling when converting from the original inks. Furthermore, it can also be intermixed with the Roland inks to allow for easy transition without any waste. Explains
James
Gould,
Product
Manager, Digital Aftermarket at Sun Chemical, “To guarantee exact reproduction to the Roland inks, the development of ESL 2 included the selection of a completely revised yellow pigment as well as the introduction of Light Black.” James continues, “The inks have gone through stringent tests, both in-house and at beta customer sites across Europe, to ensure a robust ink formulation that can deliver the highest standards across multiple print settings and substrate types. Results have also shown that ESL 2 offers excellent outdoor durability and is superior to the Roland inks for resistance to alcohol when printed on suitable media, ensuring customer graphics
maintain their highest quality over time. We are therefore confident that Roland Pro 4 users will agree that ESL 2 exceeds other inks in print quality and performance, allowing them to benefit from the full potential of their latest generation Roland eco-solvent devices.” ESL 2, developed and manufactured at Sun Chemical’s global headquarters for inkjet at Midsomer Norton, UK, is available in 440ml cartridges and 1 litre ink bottles. These can be used in Sun Chemical’s Streamline range of bulk ink feed systems, which have been designed specifically to meet the performance demands of the Roland Pro 4 printers and to offer improved productivity and reduced costs for customers. Sun Chemical will continue providing its popular ESL HPQ LO ink for customers using Roland’s established Pro 2 and Pro 3 platforms.

NEWS IGAS in Tokyo: Alegro, Vareo and Primera Attract Great Interest Muller Martini’s booth was well attended on all six days of the IGAS show in the Japanese capital of Tokyo. The great interest of the visitors, including many leading figures from Japan’s graphic arts industry, was due not least to the fact that Muller Martini gave live demos of three machines. In addition to the Alegro A7 featuring MC technology, a book data center (BDC) and line control, a second softcover system was also presented: the Vareo, which was launched this year and provides maximum flexibility at a speed of 1350 cycles per hour. The many visitors to the stand were naturally particularly curious about its innovative technology – the perfect binder is the first where each of the three clamps is equipped with its own servo motor – and followed the demo attentively through their headphones. Muller Martini gave tours of its booth three times of day, at which, in addition to the Alegro and Vareo, a Primera saddle stitcher with numerous quality control systems such as “Secure Binding” (product verification using AsirCode) and Trim Watcher Plus, a station for book format and thickness measurement of trimmed products that is specifically used in Japan. Due to the massive interest, visitors has to register for their tour of the Muller Martini booth, and not a single person failed to turn up.
The continued importance of the IGAS fair, which is held every four years, was shown by the wide range of nationalities of the visitors to the Muller Martini booth. They came not only from Japan, but also from several other countries in Asia, including China, India, Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore, as well as from Australia and as far afield as Africa. The great visitor interest was also reflected in the many new projects that were lined up and existing investment plans that were firmed during the event. In addition to the showroom, where unique and attractive sample products were shown, the joint press conference given by Bruno Müller, CEO of Muller Martini, and Yasuyoshi Miyazaki,
Managing Director of Muller Martini Japan on “global market trends” and “our future is digital and offset” to numerous Japanese journalists specializing in the printing industry was also well attended. The ‘superhero’ story emphasises the fact that digital, along with textile and signage have become the real opportunities for wide format printers over the past 10 years. The traits we associate with superheroes can be applied to our digital print community. Digital technology gives printers additional (super) powers and the potential to develop their businesses and just like our superheroes, they are stronger when combined. Being adaptable to changes in technology and customer demand is a strength of our community and at FESPA Digital 2016 visitors will be able to discover the tools and knowledge that will equip them for a powerful digital future.” For more information on FESPA Digital 2016 and to register to attend, visit: www. fespadigital.com Packing by IST METZ wins Paperazzo Haptik Award The packaging was awarded in the category „Packaging“ of this year’s Paperazzo Haptik Awards that have been awarded on September 10th in Frankfurt. The packaging comprises a tin can with a high-quality salt, the outer packaging of the tin and a folded parchment paper integrated into the bottom of the outer packaging. If the can holding the salt is removed, the folded box is transformed into a table lamp by simply pulling up the folded transparent paper and switching on the integrated LED tea light. The packaging can thus be also used as an ambient light. At UV DAYS 2013, the in-house trade fair of IST METZ on the topic of UV technology, the machine manufacturer presented the awarded packaging as an exemplary future print product. It is decorated with high-class varnishing effects produced in sheet-fed offset and inkjet printing. The use of inline embossing provides a special feel. The print product is supplemented by an app that shows a 3D animation of how to easily transform the packaging into a
table lamp on a smartphone or tablet. The packaging was developed by the Marketing Department of IST METZ and printed on the in-house printing press by means of UV technology. It has already been awarded two PrintStars 2013, a Promotional Gift Award 2014 and a Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2015. The Paperazzo Haptik Award is awarded in eight categories. The idea of this prize is to present exceptional and high-quality paper and print products to the public and to demonstrate the attraction in comparison to digital media. The prize has been awarded by the editorial team of the B2B Magazine Paperazzo since 2012. The Future is Now: manroland web systems at the World Publishing Expo 2015 manroland web systems presents different innovative business models in Hamburg that have been developed with newspaper printers Who has the most modern and efficient newspaper press of the year 2015? manroland web systems always is actively involved – in the offset project of the new COLORMAN e:line Bamberg as well as in the worldwide first digitally printed daily newspaper, the “Walliser Bote” in Switzerland. manroland web systems has developed future-proof business models together with its customers and will present them at the World Publishing Expo 2015. Dieter Betzmeier, member of the board at manroland web systems, is pleased about this year’s World Publishing Expo (WPE) (manroland web systems, booth 4.530, October 5-7). What he is expecting are professional and exciting
discussions in Hamburg: „Many of our customers already went into action and started the future of newspaper printing together with our company. In most cases, the challenges for newspaper printers are similar: How do I optimize the production technology for small runs and regionalization? Under what preconditions can traditional newspaper printing be handled economically?” Anyhow, the solutions for the printers are not always the same: there are investments in new offset and digital presses as well as many retrofits of existing presslines. This is what Dieter Betzmeier wants to talk about at the WPE: “We gained important experiences and got to know different business models at every project. These insights we would like to share. Therefore a communicative exhibition like the WPE is the perfect platform.” manroland web systems especially prepared some highly demanded key topics: these contain the new ink density control IDCµ for newspaper printing, upgrades and retrofits and the entry to digital newspaper production and resulting continuative business models. Digitally Booked to Capacity The daily “Walliser Bote“ of the Swiss printer Mengis Druck AG in Visp is a revolutionary best-practice example for digital newspaper printing. Integrated to a digital inline production workflow, the folding system FoldLine takes over the inline finishing. The inline folder is essential for the integrated production. Many printing experts that have visited the printing house in Visp are convinced and left with totally new perceptions about digital business models. Today, Mengis produces the newspaper in the evening and different commercial products, such as books, magazines and maps, in the daytime. An important component of the workflow is the MasterQ software. It plans the efficient

production order of all incoming jobs, as the workflow integration is also one of the core competencies of manroland web systems: Besides MasterQ, also WorkflowBridge (for industrial finishing) and DigiLink (connects digital and offset production planning) have established on the market. InlineDensity Control with micro marks (IDCµ) is the name of the first ink density control for newspaper printing from manroland web systems. It successfully went into production at the printing company in Bamberg. No matter if it is integrated to the new operation concept or a retrofit, it always offers great benefits. This is efficient for all newspaper presses from manroland web systems but also for other fabricates. Upgrades and retrofits have been in the focus of new investments of newspaper customers during the last year. The “puzzle strategy“, a solution from Augsburg that allows successive retrofits of single components, is especially famous in the USA. At every time, the customers benefit from the service and technology know-how of manroland web systems. All around the world, the project teams from manroland web systems help to make press rooms more efficient and future oriented due to retrofits and upgrades. The numerous press removals, operation retrofits and press re-configurations from Australia to India create a great story that can be told. More than ever when you are the project manager – as manroland web systems usually is. Fast exposure and constant quality for higher printing efficiency In 1976, the Korean Sungkon Chung founded the family business, Kyoung Wha, in the South Korean city of Ansan. Ansan is located in the province of Gyeonggi-do on the coast of the Yellow Sea about one and a half hours’ drive
away from the capital, Seoul. At the very beginning, the small company employed three people, which mainly produced hand-made rubber plates. Far-sighted and innovative, Mr Sungkon Chung established in the course of many years, a well-positioned trade shop, which now enjoys an excellent reputation as the market leader in South Korea. In the meantime, the company management turned over the business to the children of the company founder, Kate and Jihoon Chung, who successfully pursued the expansion of the business. Additional sites were then established in the South Korean cities of Daegu and Cheongju, and another branch was opened in Indonesia. Kyoung Wha offers a comprehensive service package to its clients, which ranges from design to finished plates, with the major focus on the corrugated market. Over 200 customers, mainly in the printing industry, are served. But also almost all of the large Korean enterprises are amongst the clientele – such as wellknown world leaders in the consumer electronics, electrical devices and mobile phone industries. Recently, Kyoung Wha started a close cooperation with Flint Group and is excited about the offer: “The products are of excellent quality; we purchase flexo as well as letterpress plates. Moreover, the technicians provide quick and efficient solutions when necessary“,
says Kate Chung, Director at Kyoung Wha. Since the company intends to further expand its portfolio by becoming active in the flexible packaging and label areas, they decided in the spring of 2015 to install a nyloflex® NExT Exposure FV from Flint Group. The nyloflex® NExT exposure technology utilises a high intensity UV-A LED light source to conduct rapid crosslinking of the photopolymer surface. The high UV-A output results in a virtual 1:1 image reproduction from the digital file to the finished plate. In flexible packaging, printing plates exposed with this technology allow excellent ink transfer, particularly in solids. And in corrugated printing, fluting will considerably be reduced. For this purpose, the firm uses the nyloflex® NEF printing plates, which have been especially developed for this exposure technology. Jihoon Chung, Director at Kyoung Wha explains: “The plate formulation, which is tailor-made for LED exposure, enables a significantly faster processing of the printing plates. We realise a higher quality by the excellent reproduction of the finest details in the highlights. Besides that, our customers benefit from the outstanding printing stability of the plates – less cleaning stops are necessary, with the result of increased efficiency.“
