OneVision appoints Tim Klappe as MD for APAC With the appointment of the print veteran, the German software company sets out on a mission to automate print processes in Asia Pacific. By Sha Jumari. Print software company, OneVision, recently appointed Tim Klappe as managing director of the Asia Pacific arm of the business. Based in Singapore, the Dutchman takes over responsibility of the regional sales office with immediate effect. Klappe brings to OneVision his extensive expertise in the entire printing process, from the prepress stage via printing to processing, both in conventional commercial printing and in digital printing. In addition, he brings with him an in-depth knowledge of the Asia Pacific region. Klappe has more than 25 years of industry experience in the region under his belt. His tenure included managerial stints in Ferrostaal and Norde International and was also previously responsible for leading the Asian postpress sales operations of Heidelberg and the Indonesian office of manroland. Klappe looks forward to tackling his new professional challenges:

BEFORE

“My main task will be to increase OneVision’s prominence. In principle, the applications deliver exactly the type of solutions printing companies and publishers are seeking for prepress and premedia activities to enable them to work with greater efficiency and speed, and in higher quality. Unfortunately, that has remained a well-kept secret up to now in the region in and around Southeast Asia and Australia. I therefore must and want to change that as soon as possible.” OneVision develops and offers software solutions for printing, publishing, and media industries. Its repertoire of software solutions appears to be created with one keyword in mind: automation. Klappe continued to say that he was attracted to OneVision due to the fact that its software solutions are helping guide the transition to digital printing and digital publishing. “Good workflows and tools are the most important prerequisites for smooth-running printing and high print quality. OneVision’s software solutions

cover cover the different printing processes and take away all the pain points and bottlenecks you experience in the processes at the prepress or prepublishing stage,” said Klappe. “We are pleased that we were able to attract Tim Klappe to our company. We are convinced that his long experience, his comprehensive knowhow about printing processes, and his far-reaching network spanning Asia and the Pacific will prove a genuine asset for the success of OneVision Software APAC,” said Hussein Khalil, CEO of OneVision Software AG. To better understand the scope of their solutions offerings, there are essentially four solution categories – workflow, prepress solutions, image enhancement and digital publishing. Just prior to drupa, OneVision recently introduced updates to its star products – Workspace Pro, Asura and Amendo.

Packaging Innovation Asia Issue 8 2016

PrePress Workflow – Workspace Pro Workspace Pro is a database driven and browser-based front end platform for OneVision’s products. Aiming to increase workflow automation, the software tool offers users customizable layout options for the production workflow. Workspace Pro is easy to learn and use, and allows both printers and publishers to remotely monitor, track, manage and control every job throughout the production process. Additional functions such as order control, job ticket, or file renaming in a rule-based manner allow prepress operators to have comprehensive insight into their production workflows.

standard colour profiles in job and newspaper printing. This helps prevent gauge pin problems and reduces the potential for complaint. Image Enhancement – Amendo Amendo is OneVision’s answer to automated image enhancement. The image editing solution, which runs on the Workspace Pro platform, delivers enhanced images in the shortest time possible, and at a consistently high standard. With its most recent update, the software is now enabled with a series of innovations to further increase automation in image enhancement and boost time and cost efficiencies.

facilitates the publishing of print media on an online platform. Targeted at media companies, Mirado enables publications to easily prepare, enhance and publish digital editions of print publications through a user-friendly interface. In addition, the software allows the digital version of the publication to embed features such as slideshows, video and audio so readers can have a richer and interactive experience online. Media companies can also make use of a comprehensive readership analytics tool included in the software. To get from design to digital publishing

The latest update of Workspace Pro is empowered with new features that can further increase job processing performance. A configurable job list update is able to increase throughput and simplify the operation of the job list, even at peak times. Workspace Pro users can now lodge job status information and job queue description, to enable better oversight and control of jobs. Prepress – Asura A prepress solution that runs on the Workspace platform is Asura. Asura is OneVision’s flagship solution that aims to automate the prepress stage of the print production line. The programme is able to automate and streamline the preflighting, optimisation and normalisation processes in print production. The software allows error identification and correction to be done automatically as part of the workflow, to cut down significant time and costs. Asura offers users a fully automated quality control for print files at the pre-press stage with subsequent optimisation of the PDF files. The solution is able to automatically check, correct and output to several formats including PDF, EPS and PostScript. The latest version of Asura allows for even greater optimisation. Asura’s data ‘laundry’ system is now less complex and easier to operate, to further reduce work time requirements. The new version is now equipped with a new 4D colour management technology for seamless integration of the new

One of which is a new file attribute, ‘Image Definition’, that allows images to be routed automatically by degree of definition. This feature automatically reduces sharpness parameters of images when analysis shows that the image is already sufficiently sharp. Brightness optimisation is another new feature which enables the adjustment of depth and light in an image. Amendo is additionally equipped with a ‘process meta data’ module that is capable of processing all EXIF, IPTC and XMP meta data. Amendo’s existing feature, ‘tone down skin impurity’, now includes three additional options so that users can achieve even finer adjustment of skin tone modulations. Digital Publishing – Mirado This branch of the software company is considered its newest. Under this category is the Mirado software, which

stage, there are three phases to the Mirado process. The first phase is preparation, in which Mirado automatically prepares content for publication from the final PDF input. Pre-production work such as cropping, trimming, page splitting, section detection and numbering is processed at this stage. The second step is enrichment, where publishers will be able to interactively add media, links and repurposing pages with the Mirado Editor. The last step is deployment. At this stage, the content is published on the target platform using Mirado’s deployment tool. The digital versions can be published to a cloud or the customers’ own data center for worldwide distribution. Mirado’s capabilities allow publications to explore cross-media campaigns, and potentially increase revenue opportunities.

The Secret to Award Winning Success iMSGlobal emerged the biggest winner at the inaugural competition, ORIS Flex Pack Awards. The company’s partnership with CGS has been instrumental in its international journey to the forefront of packaging design and branding. By Sha Jumari. The Business Company: iMSGroup Australia Pty Ltd (iMSGlobal) Industry: Packaging Branding and Design Headquarters: Australia Website: http://www.imsgroup.com.au/ The Challenge - Improve the range of proofing and mockup solutions across all operations - Push boundaries in creative brand packaging to continue to meet client satisfaction standards - Update and maintain a solid platform of operations to remain competitive The Solution CGS ORIS Proofing Solution consisting of: - ORIS Flex Pack // Web software - Roland Versacamm VS-300i The Results - iMSGlobal beat entries from all over the world to win five out of 12 awards at the inaugural Flex Pack // Web Awards - Ability to deliver a consistent product and exceed client expectations with a powerful costeffective colour management solution - Maximum level of creative and innovation facilitated by a greater level of flexibility for substrates At Drupa 2016, CGS Publishing Technologies recognised the winners of its first ORIS Flex Pack Awards. The competition acknowledged the creativity of current customers of the ORIS Flex Pack // Web system, and awarded 12 winning entries across four categories: Flexible Packaging, Carton Printing, Labels and Specialty Packaging. One of the big winners of the competition was iMSGroup Australia

Pty Ltd (iMSGlobal), which surpassed dozens of Flex Pack // Web user from across the globe to take home five out of the 12 awards meted out. “Winning five awards was a tremendous achievement for our team. We work hard to meet the needs and demands of our clients and winning these categories is a real testament to the quality of the work we produce. CGS’s ORIS Flex Pack // Web system gives us cuttingedge mock-up and packaging proof

capability, so our clients can really see and experience their brand coming to life,” said Andrew Gale, technical director, iMSGlobal. iMS is a global packaging and POS graphic design and production full service agency. The Australian headquartered company has ten offices in eight countries across Europe and Asia Pacific. In Asia Pacific, iMS is located in the major cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Shanghai and Mumbai.

“When we found out that iMS won so many awards at our first Flex Pack // Web competition, it didn’t come as a surprise. The entries submitted by the iMS operational units were not only high quality but complex too. It goes to show the level of creativity that the company possesses,” said Christoph Thommessen, sales director for Asia Pacific, CGS. Bringing Brands to Life Working in collaboration with their clients’ agencies and print vendors, the iMS group aims to provide a holistic, end-to-end service for brand management teams and address every stage of the artwork prepress, colour and print management process. The brands iMS generally represents are those in the FMCG space. “Many of our clients view us as their brand guardians, and this is a role we take very seriously. Our goal is to ensure that their brand is always showcased in the best, most innovative and most creative way, so the solutions we offer must always be exceptional,” said Gale. The company prides itself in adopting and investing in new, leading-edge technology. For iMS, it was essential to be updated with a solid and competitive platform of operations to consistently meet client satisfaction. “We regularly review all of our functions to ensure we continue to push boundaries. We are always seeking

to improve the range of proofing and mock-up solutions that we engage across our operations,” said Gale. “As we were expanding rapidly, we had the opportunity to invest in new technology and establish a new frontier. The time was ripe to explore the options available in the market that can improve our current range of platforms.”

cost effective and can create value for its clients. There was also a need for a solution that has the ability to print onto a wide range of base materials, and can provide accurate samples of likely commercial print run outcomes. iMS found the answer in the ORIS Flex Pack // Web system. The solution consists of the ORIS Flex Pack // Web software and the Roland Versacamm VSi UV printing system.

As part of the search and upon review of its current systems, the company pinpointed a number of requirements. It required a progressive colour management solution that is

The ORIS Edge Worldwide, the ORIS Flex Pack // Web system has 274 installations. The solution has install bases across the whole production chain, ranging from design agencies, brand owners, mockup producers, prepress companies to printers. Amongst the printers are flexo, offset and gravure printers and even metal can printers. The ORIS Flex Pack // Web system has firmly established itself in the market when it comes to producing highly accurate packaging proofs and mockups. The unique solution leverages 4D colour management technology and specially developed XG inks, which includes orange and green to offer up a wide gamut to cover almost all spot colours. “iMS already has and still retains other colour management and proofing solutions which we continue to operate across our facilities. However, for a high quality and colour accurate outcome we channel that work through the CGS solution,” Gale added. The Flex Pack // Web Software includes a packaging-specific spot colour management, which can also support CxF/4 spectral data allowing for perfect spot colour overprints. Furthermore, the software offers integrated soft proofing, proof certification and halftone support. Flex Pack // Web allows for colour precision and accuracy for mock-ups and proofs. The key to the colour precision is the ORIS broad transfer media portfolio, which can be printed upon and then transferred to any substrate common in packaging, including metal.

“The combination of quality staff and training made the CGS colour management solution a powerful cost-effective option that delivers a consistent product,” said Gale. “Coupled with the correct maintenance program and procedures, the CGS solution delivers a greater level of flexibility for generating folding carton, labels, shrink sleeves and TRUE proofs on actual substrate.” The software builds on Roland’s native firmware, with all printer features such as multi-pass, print and cut or overprint, are supported and efficiently used for the application. The Roland printer is equipped with a built-in cutting feature so that even short runs of adhesive labels can economically be produced. The hardware has been customised with several components developed by CGS, like a pre-heater, add-on dryers or special media feed systems. Amongst the available hardware options are also custom laminators, punchers and register units. Expanding Footprint with Innovation Moving forward, the iMSGlobal team have big plans to spread its international footprint. The company sees itself continue to open offices in Europe, North & South America and open more offices in the Asia Pacific region. “Our operational model is modular and is dependent upon servicing client needs in each location. However, a fundamental part of our modular solution is the installation of the CGS technology in all of our proposed new office locations. At Drupa 2016, our team spent some time investigating

other solutions, but so far none has been able to match the technical support and direction that the CGS team advocates,” said Gale. To date, iMS has installations of the ORIS Flex Pack // Web solution, located in all of its Asia Pacific bases. “The CGS team have been very supportive of our challenges in pushing boundaries and have worked diligently with us to ensure all of our people are trained to the highest level, that our installations were completed efficiently, within deadline and on budget and they continue to provide after sales support at the highest level. We would like to express our appreciation to them for that continued support,” Gale continued. Christoph Thommessen, sales director for Asia Pacific, CGS concluded: “We’re extremely proud that iMS have chosen our solution to support them in their demanding journey to remain as leading brand management experts and specialists. We look forward to continuing our partnership with them as the iMS family grows even bigger throughout the globe.”

The company’s membership in the community is the first step in its longterm partnership with GRI, and will not only expand the reporting disclosure system for its businesses in the region, but also raise sustainability awareness and execution. In addition, with GRI recently establishing an office in the Philippines and with an increasing focus on the region, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific will continue to be a strong driving partner for sustainability initiatives as its business grows together with its customers, suppliers and other stakeholders. “This partnership with GRI underscores Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific’s long-term commitment to sustainability and the initiatives we have already been implementing in line with sustainable business practices,” said Janet Neo, head of corporate sustainability, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. “With this membership, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific is raising the sustainability bar to the next level by ensuring our sustainability reporting remains at the forefront of GRI reporting standards to create new value for our stakeholders and how our business can drive action towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

Package printing gets boost with HP Indigo 20000 Who knew that so much thought goes into a split-second decision about buying milk? The competition among similar products on grocery store shelves can be intense. Food and drink manufacturers understand that shoppers make their buying decisions in a matter of seconds as they scan the shelves. Sometimes, they’re motivated by price. Others are loyal to particular brands. But other shoppers can be lured by custom packaging that not only attracts eyeballs but also visually communicates the brand’s promise. When a quick sale matters, aesthetic features such as color, typography, brightness and other graphics really do come into play. Big brands such as Coca-Cola, Emerald and Nestle already understand the value of custom packaging and have turned to HP’s Indigo 20000 press for help. But smaller companies are also looking to get into the game – and that created a business opportunity for Swiss Pack Canada. Swiss Pack, a Burlington, Ontario-based maker of flexible packaging and provider of custom digital packaging and printing services, uses the HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press to help its customers create packaging that sets their products apart, said Philippe St-Cyr, general manager of Swiss Pack Canada. The majority of Swiss Pack’s customers are small to mid-sized, family-owned businesses known for producing small

"Customers don’t buy the product. They buy the packaging." Philippe St-Cyr General manager of Swiss Pack Canada batches of high-quality or artisanal products in Canada. “Our investment in the HP Indigo 20000 enables us to help companies, especially those in the food packaging industry, make the transition into short-run digital printing,” he said. “We are often helping these companies take their first step into custom printed packaging.” Swiss Pack stocks and sells packaging products for a wide range of industries including food, pet food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, agriculture, pesticides, fertilizers, hygiene and detergents. It specializes in stand-up pouches, coffee bags, custom printed pouches and three side seal pouches including flat and pillow pouches. Flexible packaging is a sizeable chunk of the packaging industry and is a fastgrowing market segment. In 2014, flexible packaging accounted for more than $31 billion in sales in the U.S., or about 20 percent of the entire U.S. packaging market, according to the Flexible Packaging Association. Swiss Pack and the HP Indigo 20000 Swiss Pack invested in the HP Indigo

20000 to stay competitive as the market shifted to digital printing. The HP Indigo 20000 makes quickturn production easier because it can balance dozens of print jobs per day and helps Swiss Pack meet the needs of their customers, St.-Cyr said. The press’s 740 x 1100 millimeter image format covers a wide range of flexible packaging jobs and brings high productivity and efficiency to a variety of applications. Innovative packaging in focus With HP’s Indigo presses leading the way, Swiss Pack can offer its customers the latest innovations in flexible packaging and digital printing, including child-safety features and greener, more sustainable materials. The use of biofilms or recyclable films can help mitigate the effect of packaging waste on the environment and are also a great selling feature for eco-conscious brands. The company is experimenting with new, child-safe packaging that it plans to roll out next year. HP’s support has led to Swiss Pack’s investment in further research and development and “lots of learning from both sides,” St.-Cyr said. “We are happy to be learning and hoping for new technologies to come through to support small businesses,” he said.

HD Photobook Opens Eyes for Cataract Patients Cataract blindness is one of the most curable diseases – a quick 10-minute surgical procedure, and patients will be able to see again. Yet according to the World Health Organization, 46% of global visual impairment is attributed to cataract blindness. The bulk of those unnecessarily suffering from the disease live in destitute communities, and are not able to have access and afford the simple surgery. It was with this cause that the charity photobook, ‘A New Vision on Asia’, came to fruition. Launched at Canon Singapore’s headquarters on July 2016, the unique photobook was produced with the support of 40 photographers of the Facebook group ‘Asian Passion for Imaging’ and Bob Endert of Canon Singapore. The photobooks were printed with the high definition photo printer, the Canon DreamLabo 5000. The photobook project supports A New Vision, a Singapore-based charitable organisation that specialises in facilitating cataract blindness operations in East Java, Indonesia. The fundraising initiative aims to raise sufficient funds to pay for 500 operations. The funds raised from the project will be funneled towards A New Vision’s Cataract Surgical outreach scheduled for September 2016. Every donation of $100 to A New Vision helps pay for a 10-minute cataract operation. As a token of appreciation, each sponsor will be presented with a high definition photobook of images of Asia, which were contributed by forty talented photographers. “You would expect Canon, a company with imaging very close to its heart, to be the main driving force behind this initiative. However, Canon was not directly involved,” said Bob Endert of Canon Singapore. “It was really the Canon employees, the photographers

and DreamLabo customers, FotoHub and Seyacolor, who were the driving forces behind this initiative. We were able to raise sufficient money to fund a total of 150 eye operations.” The layout and printing of the photobooks were sponsored by two printing companies: FotoHub Singapore and Seyacolor in Sri Lanka. FotoHub was the first company in Singapore to install the Canon DreamLabo 5000. “As a passionate photographer myself, I was very happy to be able to be part of this great initiative to help A New Vision raise money to pay for cataract operations for the blind in Indonesia,” Endert continued. The DreamLabo is Canon’s flagship press for high definition production photo printing, offering a higher industry standard of 2400 x 1200 dpi print resolution. It features a newly developed high-density print head, enabling over 300 mm wide printing output.

Incorporating Canon’s FINE (Fullphotolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology, the print head enables the printing of high-quality photos and detailed text to support a variety of high-value-added output, from premium photobooks, photo calendars, photo collages and other merchandise to high-quality POD items, such as bespoke brochures. The wide print head delivers highspeed One-Pass printing, requiring only a single pass of the printing paper while the print head remains in a fixed position. When used in combination with the automatic Double-sided printing function up to 12×25 in size, the DreamLabo 5000 is capable of printing approximately 1000 pages of A4 size content. The DreamLabo uses a seven-colour dye-based ink system that delivers smooth gradation. To find out more and to contribute to the cause, visit: http://www. anewvision.org/

The Xeikon STAR traning program Xeikon has combined all its training expertise into a single initiative with its newly-launched Xeikon STAR Program. Developed for all Xeikon press operators, it has been created to add value, establish a stepped approach to increasing knowledge and expertise, offer a “Certified” program of Xeikon training curriculum and enable the customer trainees to fully optimize the performance of their Xeikon solution in all aspects of their business.

Six Elements There are six elements divided into three sections: Start with Basic Operator Training and Basic Workflow Training; Produce with Training for Production Efficiency and Training for Workflow Efficiency and Optimize with Advanced Media Scripting Training and Advanced Color Training.

Frederik Vervenne, Xeikon’s vice president services: “Our customers see us as a trusted advisor in digital production and applications and this is a way for us to apply our expertize to make an increasing digital production a successful experience for our customers. The Xeikon STAR Program will improve customer productivity and performance. And all those positive enhancements translate into increasing revenue for the customers. It will also offer a more focused approach to Xeikon training options building up to an ‘Expert’ status upon full completion of the program.”

Basic Operator Training will give the Xeikon press operator the baseline knowledge to print and operate the Xeikon digital press and raster image processor to produce high quality customer production jobs. It will focus on familiarizing operators with the press components and functionality, cover Raster Image Processing for the X-800 digital front-end, look at standard digital front-end RIP settings and review ways to maintain good print quality. Basic Workflow Training will give the press and prepress operators the

baseline knowledge to operate the Xeikon digital front-end Raster Imaging Processor and understand basic X-800 features and functions to produce high quality customer production jobs. It will include an introduction to MyPress, details on how to manipulate the digital front-end system and analyze X-800 jobs. Efficiency trainings Training for Production Efficiency will enable the press operator to perform all maintenance tasks, and deliver operational ‘know-how’ resulting in improved press productivity and operations. It will review ‘Basic’ knowledge of Xeikon Technology, functionality, and handling as well as preventative maintenance, track and perform maintenance tasks and recognize and resolve image defects.

Packaging Innovation Asia Issue 8 2016

Digital Technology Optional sessions will be on indepth process corrective aims, profile creation techniques, business development. Xeikon ColorControl + G7 Compliance Certification Training is also part of this element and focuses on Xeikon ColorControl Training, Introduction to G7 and Methodology, Theory, G7 in Practice and G7 in PrePress. Hands on exercises for each element will help underpin the learning As every stage is completed a certificate is awarded with a Star for each individual element until all six stars have been attained. The program itself will be continually assessed by the Xeikon team to ensure its effectiveness. Vervenne adds: “We have developed customer surveys for every class. This will help us track immediate response rates. We will also continue to measure service calls and prints volume so that we know that the classes are working and what the customers like or dislike about them.”

Training for Workflow Efficiency will give the pre-press and press operators the advanced knowledge to effectively operate the Xeikon X-800 digital frontends’ features and functions. They will learn how to create basic to complex workflows, review and select correct JTF settings, analyze the X-800 jobs and understand the different reporting functions and use Metadata for improved workflow automation. Landa hits doubledigit sales in China The company’s sheetfed S10 and W10 web Nanographic presses are proving popular with Chinese customers. Sha Jumari reports.

According to Asia Pacific sales director, Michael Mogridge, the technology is proving so popular in the region, Landa is limiting to companies with sales of more than €88m ($100m).

At the close of drupa, Landa reported that it took in over €450 million in orders for Nanographic Printing presses. The orders came from the major geographical regions, including the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific. The bulk of the orders reportedly came from China, as Landa claimed to have hit double-digit Chinese sales for its sheetfed S10 and W10 web Nanographic presses.

“The Asia Pacific market is a very big opportunity for us. We have established three regions: Americas, Europe and Africas, and then Asia Pacific, especially China, Korea and Japan. This is prevalent for packaging as Asia is a hub for customer goods and brand protection,” said Yishai Amir, CEO, Landa.

“Within China, the packaging industry is huge. All the big companies who are doing packaging have approached us. Meanwhile in the rest of Asia, packaging is still a priority, but there’s a little bit more interest in the commercial print space, especially in book and magazine publishing,” said Mogridge. The first Chinese buyer of the Landa S10 press is ZRP. Established in 1978, ZRP is one of the top 100 printers in China. Operating from four manufacturing sites in Zhongshan, Tianjin, Kunshan and Shenyang, ZRP specialises in the Personal & Home Care, Consumer Electronics & Toys, Cosmetics, Food & Pharmaceuticals, Spirits, and Paper Products markets. Huanran Huang, chief executive of ZRP, said: “With innovation close to our heart, the Landa S10 will be a perfect addition to our technology portfolio. For the first time in Asia, we will be able to provide cost-effective, short and mid-length packaging runs.”

28 metres of high-tech sheetfed offset Following successful installations of KBA sheetfed offset presses in other print companies belonging to the Slovakian Grafobal group, whose operations are spread over several Eastern European countries and cover numerous other segments beside the core competency in packaging, the first KBA Rapida 106 has now been taken into operation at the Grafobal headquarters in Skalica. The configuration of this 28-metre high-tech press, with its 13 printing, coating and dryer units, is unique in Slovakia – and no less remarkable far beyond the local borders. Nine printing units are followed by a coater, two dryer towers, a second coater and a triple-length extended delivery with installation space for further

dryers. This is at first sight a typical double-coater press for conventional, UV or mixed operation in the highquality printing and finishing of folding carton products. Accordingly, the Rapida is also equipped with boardhandling accessories and customerspecific pile logistics facilities, while a 675 mm plinth enables the use of higher piles when printing thick substrates.

18,000 sheets/hour with 13 units Much less common for such a long press, however, is the enormous output of up to 18,000 sheets per hour with the HighSpeed package. One of the features which makes this possible is the extremely precise, sidelay-free SIS infeed (Sensoric Infeed System), which is only to be found on KBA Rapidas. Similarly standard for the Rapida 106, in contrast to many other mediumformat presses of this category, is the consistent implementation of a dedicated drive concept at the feeder, with separate motors for the feeder head and feed table. In combination with the special Venturi sheet guiding system, high-performance VariDry dryers and a dynamic sheet brake in the delivery, these technical details lay the foundation for optimum print quality even at high speeds. Job changeover at the press of a button High net outputs are dependent not just on high production speeds, but especially on fast makeready. The job changeover program of the Rapida 106 ensures that all selected changeover processes are performed automatically and in optimised sequence. The LogoTronic Professional software enables the data and corresponding press settings for the next job to be

Sheetfed Offset inking can be corrected and expensive waste is reduced to a minimum. The customer can also be offered a detailed quality report. Further systems which help the operator to monitor print quality are ErgoTronic ColorControl for the measurement of ink densities and L*a*b* values, and ErgoTronic ACR for register evaluation. In addition to its primary function of simultaneous plate changing, the SPC system can also be used to adjust the print length. This practical function is a highly valued means to further enhance product quality.

loaded into the ErgoTronic console while the current production is still running. The actual job changeover can then be started with a single press of a button. For over ten years now, the magic word for fast job changeovers on the makeready world champion press Rapida 106 has been “simultaneous”. In the meantime, other manufacturers have also started to use this term, though users must remain wary as to exactly what it is intended to describe. For the Rapida 106 in Skalica, the situation is unambiguous: Thanks to the DriveTronic SPC (Simultaneous Plate Change) direct drive technology on the plate cylinders, the plates can be changed in all nine printing units at the same time. KBA Plate Ident reads a data matrix code to identify the mounted plates and can thus monitor their correct positioning and order. Parallel to this, i.e. without any loss of time, the blankets and impression cylinders can be washed with the CleanTronic Multi system. Another important function which contributes to fast makeready in folding carton production using a large number of different colours is the washing system DriveTronic SRW for the ink rollers in printing units 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9. If any of these units are not required for the current job, the rollers can already be washed down during production. Time-consuming ink changes between jobs thus become a thing of the past. Fast job changeovers are not limited

to just the printing units, however. One of the coaters incorporates an AniloxLoader system for automated anilox roller changes without physical stress for the operator. Three anilox rollers are held in a magazine directly on the coater. This system, too, is unique in Slovakia. Finishing diversity A double-coater press permits a multitude of coating effects. All the more so when it is equipped not only with supply circuits for dispersion and UV coatings, but also with provisions for special coating types such as gold, silver and Iriodin. The outputs of the IR/hot-air intermediate dryers and the VariDryBLUE IR, hot-air and UV dryers in the triple-length extended delivery are adapted to handle these applications. The VariDryBLUE final dryers are particularly efficient, as the hot air delivered to the initial segments is subsequently recirculated for drying in the rest of the delivery. The benefits of repeated heat use are especially evident in an air-conditioned hall. Controlled quality For printers of highly demanding packaging, e.g. for cigarettes, continuous quality control is an absolute must. On the Rapida 106, a camera system enables the operator to stay abreast of what is happening inside the press. The on-press measuring and control system QualiTronic Professional uses inline measurements to evaluate every single sheet and to detect possible defects in the printed image. If necessary, the

Convenience and efficiency at the console The operator-friendly ErgoTronic console enables convenient and efficient press handling. All functions are accessed and controlled intuitively via the TouchTronic interface, which never requires more than two taps on the console touchscreen. The program “One-Button Job Change” accelerates job changes by optimising the sequence of individual process steps. The “FastInkUp” function, on the other hand, is able to reduce start-up waste by up to 40 per cent; the last sheets of a job are used to reduce the old ink profile on the rollers, and the inking unit comes into colour faster with the new profile. The operator is presented a clearly arranged job list with information on ink coverage, visualisation of the ink profiles and preview images. The coverage data of the individual jobs facilitate determination of an optimum job sequence to minimise start-up waste and makeready time. The sixth installation of a Rapida press in a company of the Grafobal group underlines KBA's strong position in packaging print. This applies not only in large formats, where KBA is the uncontested market leader, but also in the highly competitive medium-format segment. Proof is furnished not least by a recent stream of installations with packaging customers on the Czech and Slovakian markets. But not only the packaging segment is convinced – commercial and book printers are equally appreciative of the practice-oriented automation and high production output of the KBA Rapidas.

Grows its business thanks to waterless technology The French daily newspaper Le Figaro looks back at a strategy implemented seven years ago: converting its production facilities to waterless printing with Toray plates. The move improved the newspaper print quality and opened up new business opportunities in commercial printing.

Toray Industries Inc., a leading manufacturer of waterless offset plate technology today reported that Le Figaro, one of France's leading national daily newspapers has grown its printing business substantially, despite a challenging market environment, thanks to a forward thinking investment strategy involving Toray waterless plates. In 2009, the Group made a €80 million investment in a new printing facility in Tremblay, near Paris. Adequately named L'Imprimerie (the print room), the new plant serves a double purpose: producing the newspaper for the northern half of the country, as well as developing new business in commercial printing. “Investing in equipment that would only run for four hours a day just didn't make financial sense, says Gilles Déchamps, operations director at L'Imprimerie. We wanted to be in a position to use our facility to widen our scope and diversify into magazine printing”.

Implementing waterless offset To implement its strategy, Le Figaro required equipment that offers the high level of quality required for commercial printing, with no tradeoff on the level of productivity needed for newspaper printing. In March 2009, two KBA Cortina triple width units (74 inches / 1890 mm) were installed. L'imprimerie originally selected Toray MX7 plates and later became one of France's early adopters of MX10 plates in 2014. "Our waterless printing configuration allows us to produce 80.000 copies per hour of the newspaper, or to double our production rate on lower pagination jobs at 160.000 copies per hour, explains Gilles Déchamps. So we have all the throughput we need for our newspaper activities”. Clear benefits At the same time, waterless printing with Toray MX10 plates offers a larger colour space, as well as higher screen resolutions, useful for commercial printing. "With conventional coldset web offset printing, we could typically

print a maximum line screen of 100 lpi, said Gilles Déchamps. Today, we print line screens of up to 177 lpi. This is a major benefit, particularly in the commercial segment, where we can now reliably compete with commercial heatset offset printers". This has also proven to be a benefit for newspaper printing, as higher print quality, with finer and sharper color images, was precisely what Le Figaro's advertisers were asking for. Other benefits include shorter makeready times (getting ready to run takes approximately 3 minutes), reduced paper tear and limited environmental impact. "Both our prepress and print room specialists enjoyed a very fast learning curve, thanks to the MX10's easy and problem free handling, said Gilles Déchamps. Waterless printing with Toray plates has turned out to be a winning combination for us and has met our expectations fully”. A successful strategy Seven years later, Le Figaro's strategy has clearly proven its case. L'Imprimerie prints Le Figaro (200.000 to 300.000 daily copies), as well as Le Monde (200.000 to 300.000 daily copies), Les Echos (80.000 to 120.000 daily copies) and Le Midi Olympique (28.000 weekly copies). “We have grown our newspaper printing activities by a factor of 2.5 since 2009” underscores Gilles Déchamps. As for commercial printing, L'Imprimerie attracted new customers, generating additional business in the weekly and monthly market segments, with an average of 80.000 magazine copies printed every day. “Overall, we are highly satisfied with our investment, says Gilles Déchamps. In particular, the Toray MX10 plate improved its lifespan on the press by 30% over the MX7 generation. Another confirmation that we made the right move to go waterless with Toray”.

QuadTech brings new ColorTrack™ and Color Measurement with DeltaCam™ Newly launched technologies promise fast, accurate press-side correction of ink formulations, and affordable inline spectral measurement

press-to-press, shift-to-shift, and plantto-plant."

QuadTech today announced that they will bring two breakthrough color technologies to Labelexpo Americas 2016 (booth 3717), held September 1315 at the Stephens Convention Center near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. Both new products were introduced at drupa 2016 in Düsseldorf, Germany in early June. Live demonstrations of QuadTech's ColorTrack are scheduled for 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. daily. QuadTech president Karl Fritchen comments, "The live demonstrations at drupa were virtually ‘standing room only' events every day. ColorTrack and DeltaCam both generated high interest in Europe, and we are eager to debut these solutions in the Americas."

ColorTrack ColorTrack is a unique, highly adaptive new color management software solution for packaging applications. Without any hardware modifications to the press, QuadTech's ColorTrack software seamlessly integrates with ink formulation software to not only simplify workflow, but also dramatically reduce the number of ink corrections needed to achieve accurate, optimal color. "Meeting the quality and consistency demands of brand owners has become increasingly difficult," says Stephan Doppelhammer, QuadTech Marketing Manager for Packaging. "QuadTech, in partnership with ColorConsulting, has developed a ‘color expert in a box' that automates the process of delivering absolute consistency from

With human color experts, three to five color corrections on startup are typical for a new job-or even six to eight for difficult colors. ColorTrack can achieve more accurate color in one or two corrections. ColorTrack is the only software solution that offers this level of press-side connection between color measurement and ink management. DeltaCam QuadTech's Color Measurement with DeltaCam makes advanced, inline spectral measurement affordable. For around the cost of a color register system, printers can utilize accurate, automated L*a*b* measurement on film, paper or board-ensuring that all printed product is within their customers' color specifications. Printers can reduce time and waste while confidently maintaining color throughout the roll-without the need to wait for a roll change to measure with a handheld device. Operators can spot problems early and make corrections quickly, thus minimizing waste, customer complaints, and rebates.

The devil you know or the one you don't by Dave Kahle

Q. Which of these two choices is more likely to result in an effective sales person: 1. hiring someone with technical expertise or industry experience and training them to become a sales person, 2. hiring someone with sales aptitude, and training them in the product knowledge and technical aspects of the job? A. That's simple. I think you are almost always better off hiring someone with sales aptitude and educating them in the technical part of the job. Here's why... 1. In any population of people, there are far more people with technical aptitude than there are with genuine sales aptitude. So, good sales people are harder to find than good technicians. That's one of the reasons why a good sales person earns more than a good technician. 2. Sales is a more difficult job than engineering, technical repair, or any of the other highly technical professions.

Technicians invariably work with things, and things have reliable and known characteristics. Sales people, on the other hand, invariably work with people. And each individual person is an ultimately unknowable combination of thoughts, feelings, values, goals and beliefs - incredibly complex. Now add together a group of people in the context of a business, and you have a very difficult and complex situation, full of unknowable variables.

to press on no matter what - then believe me, training them in technical details is the easy part.

If you can find someone with the qualities to handle this chaos -- the discipline to work an unsupervised effective work week, the personal self-image strong enough to withstand daily rejection, the personal motivation

Those of you who are familiar with my "peeling the onion" analogy will recognize that "technical problems" are very near the surface of the onion. As long as a sales person views his/ her job as that of finding solutions

3. Technical people who become sales people almost always view their job as essentially uncovering technical problems to solve, and then proposing solutions to those technical problems. While this is a component of the job, it dramatically limits the sales person's effectiveness.

Management/General to technical problems, they'll never penetrate to the heart of a customer's goals and motivations. While technical problem solvers are working at the surface of things, the professional sales people are working with their customers on systems and partnerships. The largest sales I ever made were always at deep levels in the organization, where systems and corporate philosophies and values were more important than technical issues.

4. Finally, from a very pragmatic point of view, it is easier to educate someone in product knowledge and technical applications than it is to train someone in sales skills. Ultimately, product knowledge and technical issues are knowledge, and knowledge can be learned. Sales, on the other hand, requires a complex combination of aptitudes, motivations, beliefs, concepts, skills, processes and tools. You are far better off hiring someone who has the raw material to

develop into an accomplished sales person, than someone who has gained knowledge, but doesn't have the aptitude. Here's an example from my life. At one time, I sold surgical staplers. That sales process required us to scrub into surgery and be part of the sterile team, right there with the surgeon as he used our instruments. You can imagine the depth of knowledge that we had to have in order to be there. In addition to all the practices of the operating room, we had to know the appropriate human biology, the

methods of this particular surgery, and the application of the product. Quite a bit to learn. Yet, the company was able to instill all that knowledge into us in about six weeks. After the six week's training program, we could go into any operating room in the county, comfortably comport ourselves and instruct the surgeon in the detailed aspects of using our instruments All of that was just knowledge, and knowledge is far more easily obtained,

when compared with the task of helping someone develop sales skills. Having said all that, I have one last thought. Don't think that just because someone has sales aptitude they don't need instruction in the competencies that make one an effective sales person. Just like any other profession, there are specific competencies that effective sales practitioner's practice. You can make a person's success in sales far more likely by seeing to it that they are trained in those competencies and

then stimulated to continually develop their skills than if you allow them to learn by trial and error. The world is full of technical people who should not be in sales, and sales people who plateau and never reach their potential because no one has invested in helping them to develop the competencies of a professional sales person.

DELIVERING REDUCED COSTS AND MAXIMUM PROTECTION When eCommerce entrepreneurs Kevin Dorren and Andrew Veitch saw a niche in the market to provide a small range of premium, carefully crafted and distinctively flavoured beers for the discerning food lover, Brewhive became a reality. The challenge for their latest online venture however was how to transport glass bottles and fragile beer glasses to consumers in the most cost effective manner while offering the highest levels of protection. Working with Antalis Packaging to design and develop specialist cartons, Brewhive now has

the solution, offering outstanding protection at reduced costs and with minimum waste. Launched in August 2015, Brewhive’s USP lies in the sourcing, provenance and selection of ingredients that are carefully mixed to give each beer its unique recipe and distinctive taste. Equally important is the safe, secure and cost efficient delivery of the bottles to its end-consumer target audience. Explains Anna Roper, Marketing Manager at Brewhive, “our main target audience are consumers that are looking for an alternative beverage

to enjoy and savour at home and as an accompaniment to the food they are eating, rather than selling to the retail or catering markets. Therefore, the selection, mix and creation of individual recipes for our beers is vital to Brewhive’s unique product offering.” With its heritage in ecommerce, Brewhive has engaged the services of external expert suppliers to ensure the overall experience of product, service and delivery matches consumer’s expectations. While recipe development and brewing is the domain of highly trained master brewers, the development of suitable packaging for

the glass-bottled beverages lies with the expert development team at Antalis Packaging. Roper continues, “With customer loyalty being so easily and negatively affected when receiving damaged or broken goods, this was a key priority for us when looking for a packaging solution. Equally vital however, was how we could maintain the high levels of protection needed to transport glassbased products while keeping costs and material wastage to a minimum.” Having worked with Brewhive’s sister businesses, The Fine Coffee Club and Diet Chef, the Antalis Packaging team already had a well-established working relationship with the organisation, and understood there was no ‘on the shelf ’ solution to Brewhive’s requirements. Ryan Bisland, Account Manager at Antalis Packaging was in charge of the Antalis Packaging team. “We were involved right at the beginning to design and develop suitable packaging, which not only had to accommodate Brewhive’s speciality bottled beers, it also had to cater for the transportation of drinking glasses aswell.” Bisland continues, “Unlike the usual online retailers of premium branded wines, each of Brewhive’s bottled beers have a much lower unit price. Our biggest challenge therefore was how to successfully devise a carton that would provide maximum protection at the lowest possible cost.”

The brief from Brewhive also needed to address the impact and ease of consumer handling and disposal of the protective packaging. Having considered all void-fill solutions, from cushioning, suspension, air-pack products, foam and even chemical mouldings, Antalis Packaging finally opted for a carton made from corrugated board that could easily be recycled in domestic environments. Initially, the boxes comprised two cardboard inserts to ‘suspend’ the bottles and hold them in place to protect against damage; one at the bottom and one at the top to provide air space around each bottle and keep them secure. The boxes, while quite large in size, provided excellent protection and addressed the need for consumer recyclability. Brewhive started by offering orders ranging from 6 to 24 bottles per order. However, after the first few months of trading, it saw the emergence of a new and distinct purchasing pattern amongst their customer base, which provided the opportunity for them to revisit their minimum sales orders and adapt their packaging requirements to cater for this new offering. “Through the various tests and process we had undertaken during the initial design phase, we were confident that corrugated cardboard was the right substrate to use. We therefore set out to review the outer carton and develop and test ways in which we could reduce

the size without compromising on protection levels,” explains Bisland. The result, was the introduction of a revised outer case carton that was significantly reduced in size, yet designed to give the flexibility of catering for orders of either 12 or 24 bottles. In addition, the new solution means that Brewhive is now spending less on packaging materials and less on postage costs, without compromising the integrity of their bottled beers and glasses.” “We’re delighted with the outcome which has resulted in a 50% reduction in consumables costs for Brewhive by introducing the new cartons,” says Roper. “This has not only delivered considerable cost savings for us as a business, it has enabled us to pass on this saving to our customers in the form of more product promotions.” “From the very start, Antalis Packaging understood our business needs for a low cost, high protection solution. They have continued to be extremely responsive and adaptable to our constantly changing business model delivering ever more beneficial packaging solutions in response to our changing demands. What’s more, our courier company is also highly impressed, and have reported much fewer breakages thanks to the superiority of the Brewhive packaging.”

Tailored print solutions for plastic packaging At K 2016, the world's no. 1 trade fair for the plastics, rubber and packaging industry, which is to be held in Düsseldorf from 19th to 26th October, the Koenig & Bauer subsidiaries KBA-Kammann GmbH from Bad Oeynhausen/ Germany and KBA-Flexotecnica S.p.A. from Tavazzano/Italy will be showcasing their broad portfolio of print and finishing solutions for flexible packaging and hollow containers. Both companies have been regular exhibitors at this premier international plastics fair for many years, but this will be the first time that they have shared a joint stand (Hall 4, B11+B13). KBA-Kammann: Innovations for the direct decoration of hollow containers As a leading manufacturer of screen printing, hot stamping and digital press systems for the direct decoration of luxury hollow containers made from glass, plastic or metal, KBA-Kammann GmbH has always viewed the plastics market as an important field of business. This year's fair has thus been chosen as a fitting occasion at which to unveil the new K20 family. The successor to the highly successful K1 product series sets new standards in terms of flexibility,

speed, quality and ease of operation in direct decoration. The K15 CNC series is another example for the outstanding potential of the machinery supplied by KBA-Kammann. Highperformance infeed and delivery robots, modern camera systems for flexible and precise register control irrespective of the product shape, screen printing on tapered articles, hot stamping in stroke or roll-on mode, printing/marking of the article base and contact-free digital printing on glass, plastic and metal containers – the K15 CNC leaves practically no wish unanswered. The diverse capabilities of the systems on show in Düsseldorf will be demonstrated by way of print simulations.

Direct decoration based on screen printing is very cost-intensive and has faced increasing competition from other emerging decoration technologies such as flexo, offset or labelling in recent years. Building upon a traditionally strong market position in screen printing, KBA-Kammann thus plans to expand its interests to embrace also digital technologies and hybrid applications. Given the possibilities of digital print with regard to individualisation, personalisation, ultra-short runs, etc., the company sees good prospects in markets which

Benchmarking Europe’s label industry today FINAT, the international association for the label industry, has just published the fifth edition of its half-yearly FINAT RADAR – a wide-ranging, professionally conducted industry trends report and analysis covering the European narrow-web market. With a core focus on label converters, and produced exclusively for FINAT members, FINAT RADAR delivers a unique, in-depth profile of the current marketplace. Buoyant growth FINAT RADAR is based on an extensive online survey carried out among FINAT converter members in Europe and members of the affiliated European national label print associations, and on FINAT’s

regularly updated labelstock statistics. Jules Lejeune, FINAT MD, presenting highlights from this new issue of RADAR during the association’s recent European Label Forum in Amsterdam, was able to confirm that the industry as a whole continues to enjoy ‘buoyant growth’ at around 5% – well above

European GDP – with label converting companies increasing their sales revenues on average by over 8% in 2015. Changing brand owner demands In response to a changing profile in end user/brand owner demand, average run lengths reduced significantly. With multi-versioning, multi-language, and multi-location labelling operations, plus a current requirement for ‘fast to market’ product introductions and special editions/personalisation, enduser companies now often specify ‘just in time’ label deliveries – so print runs are naturally contracting. This is true for both conventional analogue and digital label print. As a result, analogue print runs have reduced by an average 22%, and digital print runs by 12%,

with the beverage, health and beauty, and consumer durables segments showing the sharpest declines. A broader service offering “In the complex mix of traditional, hybrid, and digital print technologies which now characterise our industry”, says Jules Lejeune, “current research shows that nearly one third of survey participants intend to invest in digital label presses in the next six months – for the first time overtaking printers’ commitment to buying conventional presses. But that is not all… Many FINAT member companies are now additionally investing in alternative product decoration technologies such as shrink- and stretch-sleeve, in-mould labels, and even flexible pouches. This is great evidence of the forward-looking, innovative thinking that characterises our industry that’s creating a new arena of all-round, multi-service suppliers for brand owners.” Growth markets Geographically, while Europe’s ‘top ten’ label markets continue to account for 75% of total label consumption, east European markets, particularly Poland, Turkey, and Russia are visibly increasing their share. In terms of enduse markets, pharmaceuticals, health and beauty care, and food labelling were the strongest performers in 2015. Management and business challenges The new FINAT RADAR also explores key features of running a label converting business – employment, profit and loss, purchasing and investment, and the high-profile subject

of waste management. Echoing Jules Lejeune’s optimism, FINAT President Thomas Hagmaier comments “The outcomes of the current FINAT RADAR indicate that our industry’s fundamentals are healthy and that the European label industry

is well positioned to face current challenges like the proposed exit of the UK from the European community.” He adds “As a label printer myself, I believe that FINAT RADAR provides an invaluable dossier of information that enables such companies to benchmark their own activities and performance – and make the most of them for the future.”

ANOTHER STEP UP IN PERFORMANCE AND QUALITY Fujifilm today announces the release of the new Acuity Select HS 30 series, a high speed addition to the Select series. Capable of printing at impressive print speeds of up to 57.6 m2 per hour – nearly double the speed of the Acuity Select 20 series – the new HS 30 offers all the benefits of this hugely popular and successful Acuity UV flatbed printer series, including superb versatility, near-photographic image quality, excellent ease of use, and the ability to produce a wide variety of applications on a range of substrates up to 50.8mm thick. Print quality The Acuity Select HS 30 offers enhanced print quality with the option of using light cyan and light magenta – ideal for producing photographic images or fine art reproductions. Productivity The new pneumatic pin registration system allows quick and easy media loading, while productivity is further improved by an automated printhead maintenance system.

Versatility The UV lamp technology in the Acuity Select HS 30 opens the way for a broader range of thinner and sensitive media to be printed. Vacuum system Finally, the HS 30’s enhanced highpressure vacuum system reduces the need for masking of the bed and allows for easy loading of media. Like the Acuity Select 20 series – the addition of light inks means that the 30 series also comes in two channel variations - 6 & 8 channels - across six new models, which offer print quality to meet the exacting standards of the photographic and fine art sectors. The new Acuity Select HS 30 series is available in the standard (2.5 x 1.25m) and X2 (2.5 x 3.08m) print-bed sizes. A roll option is available for each. The Acuity Select HS 30 series is designed to achieve the highest print quality possible by combining true

flatbed architecture with greyscale technology. This combination maintains the well-earned reputation of the Acuity brand as the market leader in its field, ideal for high quality printing on both rigid & flexible media, and able to add capacity without compromising on quality. Says Mike Battersby, Marketing Manager at Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems: “The Acuity Select HS 30 series continues to build on the success of Fujifilm’s Acuity flatbed printers, from the launch of the Acuity 2504 in 2007 through to the Acuity Select 20, introduced in early 2016. This outstanding new machine has been specifically designed for those printing 10,000 m2 a year or more, those who are looking for capacity without compromising quality, or those speciality and industrial printers currently using analogue print technologies looking to migrate to digital printing – boosting production flexibility and enhancing profitability in the process”.

DOMINO PRINTING SCIENCES’ NEW CHINA FACTORY OPENS UP INCREASED BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN THE ASIA PACIFIC REGION

The Chinese market is an integral part of Domino’s overall vision for its future development. Domino China has been present in Beijing since 1995, and the rapid growth in sales performance has made Domino the preferred ink jet printer supplier in the region.

A foundation stone laying ceremony was recently held for Domino China’s new factory in Changshu – Domino Printing Technology (Changshu) Co. Limited. Canon Singapore appoints Noriko Gunji as new president and CEO Canon Singapore announced the new appointment of Noriko Gunji as president and CEO of Canon Singapore, the regional headquarters for Canon in South and Southeast Asia. Gunji was also appointed as executive officer of Canon Inc. earlier in April this year. She moved from her most recent role as vice president of Canon China. Based in Singapore, Ms. Gunji will oversee and lead Canon employees and business partners in the area of sales, marketing and operations in 18 markets, including the domestic Singapore market, national sales offices in India, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. “I am honoured and enthusiastic to lead Canon in this culturally diverse and dynamic region of Asia. There is immense potential for growth and I look forward to working together with my colleagues to bring a wealth of innovative imaging and business solutions to our customers. We will also continue our work on sustainability and corporate social responsibility in the environments we operate in, making Canon an even more attractive company for our employees, partners and customers,” said Gunji. Gunji started her career with Canon Inc. in Tokyo in 1987 and has more than 25 years of experience in various management roles, including in-depth familiarity with the China market. Gunji took over from Kensaku Konishi, a Canon veteran who had served as president and CEO in Canon Singapore

The foundation stone laying ceremony was attended by the Domino AsiaPacific Management Team, leaders of the Changshu Economic Development Zone and representatives from the construction party. The new Domino factory is located in the Changshu Economic & Technological Development Zone, among the chemical industries concentrated area along the river. The planned area covers 26,667m2, with the total investment figure approximately £19 million. The primary plan is to build 3 production lines, including ink production, ink jet printer assembly testing, as well as Thermal Transfer Overprinting (TTO) assembly testing. An annual output of 14,000 labelling devices and 2,500 tonnes of ink are both part of the company’s plans. Headquartered in Cambridge, United Kingdom, Domino Printing Sciences is a leader in research & development

In May 2002, Domino’s Asia Pacific Headquarters were established in Shanghai. Since then, the Company has invested in 4,500m2 of production facilities, providing improved service to customers in China, and concurrently providing products and technical support services to the Asia Pacific Region. Mr Johnny Tan, General Manager at Domino Printing Technology (Chang Shu) Co. Limited, said in his speech during the ceremony: “Domino’s development strategy is to strengthen its relationships with its customers, and the regional manufacturing base is a key part of this strategy.” He continues: “China is one of Domino’s biggest regional markets. In order to support the company’s development strategy, we chose Changshu, which is close to our Shanghai headquarters. With this location for our new factory, we will be able to serve the Asia Pacific Region more effectively, especially the Chinese market, by improving the efficiency of productions and logistics.”

Winning FOGRA approval represents a vote of confidence from the respected German-based graphic technology research association, and provides yet more evidence that the Jet Press 720S is a technology whose time has come – delivering unrivalled productivity, flexibility and quality to customers who wish to transform their businesses today. This accreditation certifies the press for five configurations, across a variety of substrates and three target print conditions: FOGRA39, FOGRA51 and FOGRA52. Says Falko Wagner, Systems Specialist, Digital Print Solutions EMEA at Fujifilm Europe: “Obtaining FOGRA VPS

(Validation Printing System) certification for the Jet Press 720S confirms what all our customers around the world have already discovered first-hand – that as well as being an extremely versatile, high productivity press – the Jet Press 720S produces work of the highest quality with levels of accuracy and consistency that most other presses would struggle to match.“ FOGRA’s comprehensive accreditation process takes several weeks to complete and involves extensive testing across multiple areas – including the following: Proofing substrate colour and gloss Permanence and light fastness Fading Rub resistance Colour accuracy Tone value reproduction limits/ Reproduction of vignettes Image register and resolving power Colorimetric tone value reproduction Homogeneity Consistency Margin information PDF/X conformance In addition to FOGRA – the Jet Press 720S has also recently achieved GRACoL certification in the USA. This accreditation from a highly respected American print standards authority has provided yet another boost to the hugely successful Jet Press 720S platform – confirming still further its reputation for reliable, consistent high quality. More automation at the prepress stage for greater efficiency in production and better print data quality “Growing as a company while reducing needed staff in prepress.” Prepress Manager Mike Thorson talks about the successful automation of the production workflow at US printing company Ripon Printers

To what extent can the production workflow at a printing company be automated? How can production throughput be increased while at the same time increasing the quality of print data? What measures need to be taken to make printing processes more efficient? How did the US-based printing company Ripon Printers manage to cut its prepress workforce and yet continue growing as a company? Answers to these questions and more can be found in the best-practice example provided by Ripon Printers, a company whose roots lie in newspaper printing but which has since developed into a major printing company in the US. The history of Ripon Printers began in 1962, when the company printed and published newspapers. Over the years Ripon was able to grow into a commercial printing firm with annual turnover of more than $50 million. From its headquarters in Wisconsin, Ripon Printers uses high-end technologies to provide services for catalog manufacturers and publishers throughout the US. In recent years Ripon Printers has successfully increased the level of automation in its production processes, thereby bringing the company considerable advantages in terms of resource efficiency, print data quality, and cost reduction. More automation at the prepress stage for greater efficiency in production and better print data quality Back in 2005, Ripon Printers decided to automate individual steps in its production process using OneVision’s Speedflow Check and Speedflow Edit solutions. After a successful implementation phase, the company was determined to increase the level of automation across its entire prepress stage. It therefore added not only the

NEWS MEECH CELEBRATES SUCCESS OF ITS FIRST AIR HANDLING UNIT FOR WEB CLEANING APPLICATIONS Meech International is celebrating the worldwide sale of over two hundred AHUv3’s, the company’s first in-house manufactured air handling unit and an integral component to three of its web cleaning technologies, the CyClean, VacClean and ShearClean. Featuring a robust design and requiring minimal maintenance, the AHUv3 provides the required airflows for the web cleaners, as well as housing the system filters.

data normalization and preflighting tool Asura but also OneVision’s Workspace Pro and Workspace Balance solutions to its production workflow. “The aim was to profit from an even higher level of automation, setting up and automatically running a series of modules, and therefore increasing our throughput,” explains Ripon Printers Prepress Manager Mike Thorson. One of the main reasons for the investment was for preflight as well as automatic correction of errors in PDF files. “We are currently putting through an average of 5,000 pages per week with a peak of over 11,000 ,” Thorson says.

while reducing needed staff in prepress,” Mike Thorson says.

Higher throughput as a key factor in corporate growth

The US-based printing company also benefits from the support provided by the German software manufacturer. Although Ripon Printers generally needs little support, it occasionally discovers problem files “for which OneVision Support has pretty much always been able to give us a way to work with whatever we have been sent,” Thorson says.“ Asura is fast, effective and powerful,” Thorson summarizes. Asked what he could tell other commercial printers about OneVision products, the prepress manager recalls being challenged by one of his employees about why the company had wasted so much money on a piece of software. Just a year after implementing Speedflow Check and Edit, the same employee told Thorson,

Asked how easy it was to integrate OneVision’s products into Ripon Printers’ process and systems environment, the prepress manager described the workflow: “ Asura sits in front of our Prinergy workflow to clean up and preflight incoming PDF files. There are literally hundreds of choices you can make when setting up a workflow. However, once you get started, it builds upon itself and becomes easier and quicker to create new processes.” Asura, Workspace Pro and Workspace Balance enable virtual preflighting and automated correction of most errors, e.g. the resolution of transparencies, color calibration, formatting alignment, etc. In the case of Ripon Printers, they enabled the company to focus more closely on issues like RIPing, trapping and automatic imposition. “We have been able to continue to grow as a company

The fact that Ripon Printers was already using OneVision products influenced its decision to invest in the additional workflow solutions Workspace Pro and Workspace Balance. Mike Thorson therefore knew OneVision understood what Ripon Printers was looking for. Under the terms of the maintenance contract, Ripon Printers regularly receives new updates for its software licenses and can therefore take advantage of new functions and developments.

“This is the best software we have ever purchased.”

“With web cleaning being one of Meech’s areas of expertise, we decided it was time to focus not just on the technology of the cleaning heads of our systems, but also the technology behind them,” explains Adam Battrick, Sales Director at Meech International. “As with many of our innovations, this was a customer driven initiative. Feedback indicated there was demand for a solution that guaranteed excellent filtration while also reducing the need for monitoring and operator intervention. As a result, we developed the AHUv3 family.” There are three models of the AHUv3 available: a 2-pump compact unit, a 3-pump unit and a 6-pump unit. The 2 pump model’s compact design allows for easier integration in production environments where spacing is an issue, which is quite common in the narrow web industry. The 3 pump and 6 pump models are typically used for applications with web widths above 600mm. While the AHUv3 shares similarities with previous air handling systems, Meech has now replaced the analogue features of the V1 and V2 units with a graphic display and digital touchscreen that allow remote activation, improved monitoring and personalised settings. This enables users to accurately pre-set the required level of pressure, depending on the application. “If you are running with the CyClean system, the AHUv3 monitors and controls the vacuum and positive pressure,” explains Adam. “The required pressure can be adjusted to specification using the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ buttons on the main screen. The ‘Set’ target pressure value
