WHY DO YOU THINK YOU ARE IDEALLY POSITIONED TO LEAD CPUT CONVOCATION

BTech in Quantity Surveying

I am a graduate & convocant of CPUT, who is holding a National Diploma & BTech in Quantity Surveying. Due to my activism & commitment in serving the people, I had to leave my Master’s degree and peruse a journey of forming a worker’s trade union which seeks to advance the interests of workers. I am one of its founders and currently serving as its general secretary.

3. Enhance CPUT partnership with the business sector for employment of its graduates.

Upon my completion of studies, I had worked at Alsa Magwebu Civils as a quantity surveyor and had been involved in many major projects. I had been awarded the Optron Survey Engineers Award due to hard working and my commitment in my job. While I was busy with his maters, I had also worked as a researcher at National Research Foundation

6. Skills and financial support, on merit, for graduates who are willing/have ventured into establishing their own businesses.

8. Make it a point that employees, more especially academic staff, to be provided with enough/any necessary tools to ensure that the university produces sound and competent graduates.

WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE

2. Do educational support for schools to go simultaneously with career guidance- in townships, rural areas and all underperforming schools to be prioritized. (This should be piloted by unemployed educators from CPUT and those who are already on the system fully supported by our convocation leadership)

10. Make convocation an accessible structure.

I will make sure that the university put more emphasis on technology and knowledge transfer, prepare and develop students and lectures in terms of the 4th industrial revolution as we move to digitalisation.

A new breed of leadership!

During days of being a student at CPUT, I had served in several university structures. I been active in student development programs from student housing as well as sports department. I am a former SRC member CPUT Bellville Campus. Former ANCYL CPUT Bellville campus branch Chairperson. Former Postgraduate student association (POGSA) Bellville Campus Deputy Chairperson, Erstwhile leader & activist of CPUT Fees Must fall (FMF), Erstwhile leader & activist of CPUT Outsourcing Must Fall (OMF). General Secretary of National Insourced Workers Union

I possess all leadership skills and university knowledge that will enable me to spearhead the convocation in a correct direction. I will be able to reshape CPUT to be an employment hub for all its graduates. I will be able to promote, protect and maintain the interest and rights of the Convocation.

ATHENKOSI

NYANGIWE

Athenkosi Nyangiwe is a passionate Social Protagonist born in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape. Upon completion of his University degree in Education at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Athenkosi also completed a BA Honours Degree at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) to broaden his knowledge. His passion for education has led to the establishment of a turnkey developmental endeavor that aims to unlock the full potential of young minds through the provision of developing young people through outreach programmes in an attempt of mitigating the gap between private schools and public schools.

Athenkosi Nyangiwe holds a Bed (FET) Specialisation Degree from CPUT and completed BA Honours Degree Majoring in Media Studies, Onomastics, and Modern Prose at UWC. Served as an Executive of the Alumni Association at CPUT: 01 August 2016 – August 2018. Served as an Advisory Board Member for The Family Institute: 10 June 2020 – end June 2022. Currently serving as an Executive of the CPUT Convex: 07 September 2019 – 17 September 2022. Served as a Council Member at CPU: 07 September 2019 – 31 August 2022. Currently working for NSFAS Servicing the Eastern Cape TVET Colleges.

The experience I have gained over the years, having served in the previous Convocation Executive committee as well as having served in statutory committees of the University including the Council set me apart from other candidates. The broad experience that I have gained in the Higher Education and Training sector as well as having served on various boards make me an indispensable Presidential candidate to lead Convocation and reposition CPUT.

Coupled with his activist involvement at both secondary and tertiary levels, this has prepared him to have strong leadership capability not only to identify the need or opportunity but also to have sufficient solutions on what is to be done.

•HIGHLIGHTSThroughout my experience as a leader, and in the above-mentioned positions, I always kept my focus on what really mattered, and challenged all issues facing my constituency head-on. I took-action by implementing all recommendations, read and understand constitutions, policies and always consult where and when a need arises.

• I learnt how to respect time and the time of others, because disciplined leaders know their time is valuable. I showed up on time, and always would take wise decision on how I spend my own time.

• Adapting to any change (pos and neg), pressure, stress, challenges and maintaining flexibility at all costs.

• Have clear communication and effective goal setting

• I remained committed in the mission/ mandate at hand, finished all the tasks I have started, and always followed through with my promises. This has helped to remain disciplined and trusted.

• This however requires creativity, art, and solid design, which our youth finds enjoyment in, and is therefore a better way of opening job opportunities tour young graduates.

• Graduates of CPUT are unemployed, unprioritized and feel as if there are sidelined by their university of choice.

• As a University of Technology that wants to be part of the world that has pre-imagined the future, it is important for us to transform, and nurture our students to be tomorrow’s innovators.

• My experience and track-record has given graduates of CPUT hope that the time for CHANGE has finally arrived.

• Bursaries for South African graduates are very limited and selection system is always favoring the already affording/ rich.

• Change our approach as a university and introduce advanced learning in artificial intelligences, robotics, and genetic engineering.

• Having open-table discussions on how to create long-term and sustainable and dignified jobs

• Graduates, ever since FEESMUSTFALL epoch, asked that registration be made free, and until to date, they are fighting the same old system.

WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE CONVOCATION TO GREATER HEIGHTS AND ASSIST CPUT IN ACHIEVING ITS VISION.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO LEVERAGE THE CONVOCATION AS A PLATFORM IN HELPING CPUT PREPARE GRADUATES FOR THE 4TH AND SUBSEQUENT INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTIONS.

• They want to get back to the system and continue with their studies but are confronted by huge historical debts.

• School Psychologist be readily available, particularly for students doing research, to discuss, offload and disclose all their personal challenges.

• Call on all businesses to attend a Business INDABA and thus assist in addressing the continued increase of unemployment faced by CPUT graduates.

WHY DO YOU THINK YOU ARE IDEALLY POSITIONED TO LEAD CPUT CONVOCATION

• Regular meetings with Faculty Deans, on all issues relating to Supervisors and their students.

LWANDILE SOCIKWA

Lwandile is passionate about youth development and dedicates some of his time offering free mentorship and coaching to young people that are starting their professional careers, and young entrepreneurs in townships and rural communities. Organizations he has worked with in this regard include Unite 2030 on initiatives that support the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals and Make a Mark Africa Youth Development on youth mentorship.

WHY ELECT HIM AS CPUT CONVOCATION PRESIDENT?

MBA - NMU Business School

During his time at the university, he served as SRC Chairperson in 2006/7 and served on various institutional committees. He is a former Deputy Chairperson of the CPUT Alumni Association Executive, a former national president of PASMA, served in the youth parliament between 2009- 2012, a former Elgin FM board member, and was the leader of his MBA syndicate that won best MBA syndicate in 2018 at NMU Business School, he served in the National Marine Spatial Planning Working Group committee. Most recently, he served as a panel judge in the Unite 2030’s Impact Accelerator Programme for young entrepreneurs from all over the world.

• Facilitate sustainable Stakeholder and Industry partnerships to enable tangible economic opportunities for CPUT graduates (un-employed graduates, entrepreneurs)

HOW WILL HIS LEADERSHIP ASSIST CPUT TO ACHIEVE ITS STRATEGIC VISION?

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Lwandile Socikwa is the founder and Managing Director of Socikwa Management Pty LD and has 13+ years of industry experience in Programme Management and Business Leadership. He has held senior positions in organizations in the public and private sectors respectively such as the Presidency as a Director, SAPO as a Project Manager, Chase Africa Pty Ltd as a Senior Management Consultant, and Public Works as a Deputy Director. He successfully led the Integrated Transport Management Programme for Metrorail Gauteng and the UIF modernization projects respectively. He successfully led the implementation and rollout of the SASSA Grant Payment system used by the South African Post Office to distribute social grants to over 20 million South Africans monthly. Recently, he successfully led the Ministerial Task Team Strategic Review on the National Skills Fund (NSF).

• Mobilise CPUT Alumni and strategic industries partners that have ties with the CPUT to collaborate for the establishment of CPUT Makerspace libraries / facilities in different campuses

I want a Convocation that will include all generations of graduates including those before the University merger so as to increase quality and capacity of the CPUT Convocation to meet International Standards. To promote Good Governance and sound financial management, Basic Service Delivery be shared among own graduates in business and in consulting and ensuring quality of the curriculum that creates competitive graduate on the job Market.

• A Convocation Policy Conference that will identify a culture and a direction of CPUT Convocation, this will also adopt a term program for the convocation with all Members of the CPUT Convocation equally recognised.

• Establish CPUT Engineering Entity, Food Technology and Agri-Entity

• City of Cape Town is embarking on a Energy regeneration Program, I have a strong feeling that the Electrical Engineering Studies offered at our university can make a positive contribution and a life changing impact to such a program.

I decided to start my own Company with a vision to Grow and contribute immensely into the South African Economy. Creamillion Pty (Ltd) is a registered company in South Africa since 2018. The Company has various departments, Cleaning Detergents Manufacturing Construction Works(Building maintenance, Civil works) and Events Catering to Private individuals, Private companies, Municipalities, Government departments, and other institutions. The Company has three (3) Permanent Staff and Eight (8) Casual employees

Worked for different organisations such as First National Bank, Airports Company South Africa and George Municipality. Where learnt different skills and expertise in all the different industries including working with people, Policy implementation and Procedures to be followed in and outside working environment.

• Engage all relevant stake-holders Locally and abroad and create Partnerships that will influence or have impact in our curriculum in advancing 4IR
