CELEBRATING DAWOUD BEY

Dawoud Bey began his career as an artist in 1975 with a series of photographs, Harlem, USA, that were later exhibited in his first one-person exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1979. His works have since been exhibited at institutions such as the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, NY, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art, and other museums worldwide where his works are also included in institutional collections. In 1995, the Walker Art Center organized a mid-career survey of his work, Dawoud Bey: Portraits 1975-1995, that was curated by Kellie Jones and traveled to institutions throughout the United States and Europe. Class Pictures: Photographs by Dawoud Bey was published by Aperture in 2007. A traveling exhibition of this work toured to museums throughout the country from 2007 to 2011. Harlem, USA was published by Yale University Press in conjunction with the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012, where the work was exhibited in its entirety for the first time since it was first shown at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1979. A survey exhibition of his work, Picturing People, opened at the Renaissance Society of the University of Chicago in 2012, and traveled to museums around the country. His most recent project Night Coming Tenderly, Black references the presence of The Underground Railroad in the Cleveland, OH, landscape. The work debuted in a site-specific

installation at the FRONT International Triennial in Cleveland in 2018, and at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2019 for its first museum showing. Born in New York, NY, Dawoud Bey earned his MFA from Yale University School of Art and is currently Professor of Art and a former Distinguished College Artist at Columbia College Chicago. He has been honored with numerous fellowships over the course of his long career, including a recent MacArthur “Genius Award” Fellowship, as well as a United States Artists Fellowship, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, among many others. A 40-year retrospective monograph of his work, Dawoud Bey: Seeing Deeply, was published in 2018 by the University of Texas Press. Bey’s work will be the subject of a retrospective exhibition in 2020 that will open at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, travel to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and end at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

2019 AFFINITY AWARD HONOREE: ALAN SIEGEL The Affinity Award was created in 2016 to acknowledge organizations and individuals, who have made significant contributions to CPW. We could not succeed without friends in the field who support our organization in countless ways. It is our pleasure to give the 2019 Affinity Award to Alan Siegel (1935-2019), who has been a close friend to CPW since our early years. We approached Alan about this award back in December. As usual, his enthusiasm was infectious as we developed plans for the award presentation. Those plans were unexpectedly interrupted, when Alan passed away in March. While we are deeply saddened not to be able to present this well-deserved award to him personally, we will forever be grateful for his kindness, initiative and friendship. Alan served on CPW's board and supported CPW through generosity, compassion and advice. At the helm of The Thompson Family Foundation, he provided a helping hand in small and large ways to numerous art organizations, all the while staying personally engaged in the arts as an accomplished painter and photographer. The Thompson Family Foundation has provided major support to the historic Seventh Regiment Armory, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Morgan Library & Museum and many art initiatives in New York City and beyond. Please join us as we celebrate Alan's extraordinary life and contributions to the arts. Photograph courtesy of Woodstock School of Art

CELEBRATING ALAN SIEGEL

“Alan’s intense passion for life and beauty was unfailing.” As perfectly described in the Woodstock Times, Alan Siegel (1935-2019) “was a voracious reader, a talented photographer, an avid painter, and a true lover and patron of the visual and performing arts.” 1 Alan was born in Cleveland, OH, and grew up in Bayonne, NJ. Pursuing an early passion for law, he earned degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, and the New York University Law School specializing in business, corporate, securities and international law. He distinguished himself in a long career that included becoming a partner in the New York office of Baker & McKenzie and later a partner in the law firm Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, LLC. Never shy to take on committee work, Alan served as the non-executive chairman of The Wet Seal and as director on the board of Thor Industries. He also served on many boards for non-profit and arts organizations. In New York, he served as a trustee of the Museum of the City of New York, and a director of both the American Committee of the Weizmann Institute of Science, as well as Pioneer Works in Brooklyn. In Woodstock, where he and his wife Sandy maintained a home for over 40 years, Alan served as a director of the Center for Photography at Woodstock, before becoming a director and

treasurer on the board of the Woodstock School of Art and a trustee of Maverick Concerts. Most recently, Alan served as director, secretary and treasurer of The Thompson Family Foundation, positions he held until his passing in March 2019. The private foundation was created by Wade F.B. Thompson, the founder of Thor Industries. The foundation has been instrumental in the renovation of the Park Avenue Armory in New York, and has provided significant grants for the arts, cancer research and neurological studies. Among many acknowledgements, the Thompson family and Alan Siegel were named the 2016 Outstanding Philanthropists by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In 2018, the Woodstock School of Art celebrated the naming of The Thompson Family Foundation/Alan and Sandy Siegel Studio for Graphics and Works on Paper, thereby creating a lasting legacy in Woodstock, NY. Alan Siegel and The Thompson Family Foundation lent their support to Woodstock organizations, such as CPW, Maverick Concerts, Opus 40, Woodstock Artists Association & Museum, Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, Woodstock Day School, Woodstock Film Festival, Woodstock Land Conservancy, Woodstock School of Art, and more. In the last few years, the foundation helped CPW to purchase an artist house for the artist-in-residence program, Woodstock AIR, and supported a digitization project for CPW's Permanent Print Collection. 1 Woodstock Times, March 26, 2019

2019 AUCTIONEER: RICK WESTER Rick Wester's diverse career as gallerist, consultant and auctioneer began forty years ago when the nascent photography market was just beginning to be established internationally. After stints at galleries in New York beginning in college, including at LIGHT, the seminal gallery of contemporary photography on 5th Avenue and 57th Street, Rick became a private dealer and consultant with corporate clients in the law, advertising and insurance fields, as well as an advisor to several private collectors. In 1992, he joined Christie’s Inc., the renowned global auction house as Specialist Department Head of Photographs before advancing to International Head of Photographs. At Christie’s he led the department to majority market share while setting numerous world record prices for artists such as Alfred Stieglitz, Man Ray and many others. He became the department’s auctioneer taking sales in New York, Los Angeles and London. He left Christies after nine years to become a director at Gagosian Gallery, adding to the famed blue-chip gallery’s artist roster. This was followed by a term as Interim Director of the Howard Greenberg Gallery, overseeing the gallery’s move from Soho to its present location in the Fuller Building on 57th Street. He soon incorporated Rick Wester Fine Art (RWFA), a move that returned him to private dealing, consulting and advising. In 2004, he joined the Chelsea-based auction house, Phillips, as International Director of Photographs. In 2007, he fully launched RWFA, which he leads today, representing a wide range of emerging and mid-career artists including photographers, painters and sculptors. RWFA offers its clients a wide range of services, including collection consulting, brokering secondary market sales for both buyers and sellers, as well as USPAP-compliant appraisals, while continuing to serve the community through benefit auctioneering. 2019 CPW AWARDS & BENEFIT AUCTION 57

CONDITIONS OF SALE

58 THE CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY AT WOODSTOCK

Thank you for your support of the Center for Photography at Woodstock, whether you are attending our annual benefit event on October 3, 2019 in person or are placing an absentee bid. Please take a moment to read the conditions of sale below that will assist you in participating in CPW’s 41st Annual Benefit Auction. The auctioneer will accept bids from bidders present at the Auction who raise their paddles to signify bidding interest and from absentee bidders who make bids with CPW in advance of the Auction. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the purchaser; in the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer will have final discretion. The auctioneer may act either by placing consecutive bids up to the amount of the reserve, opening bidding at the reserve, or entering bids in response to salesroom and order bids. CPW staff, board members, and volunteers may bid at the Auction for themselves, and/or they may execute bids for absentee buyers. If the auctioneer decides that any opening bid is below the value of the article offered, s/he may reject the bid and withdraw the article from sale. CPW will record the name or paddle number of the successful bidder upon the fall of the hammer. Each lot is sold “as is” and all purchases are final. CPW does not make any expression or implied warranty or representation as to the condition of any lot offered for sale, and no statement made at any time, whether oral or written, shall constitute such a warranty or representation. Descriptions of condition are not warranties. The descriptions of the conditions of articles

in this catalogue, including all references to damage or repairs, are provided as a service to interested persons. Accordingly, all lots should be viewed personally by prospective buyers or an authorized representative to evaluate the condition of the property offered for sale. Unless a lot is identified as part of a limited edition, no edition limit should be assumed. Unless a lot is identified as having been printed in a certain year, no date of printing can be warranted. All prints are shipped unframed, unless noted otherwise. Payment is due at the evening of sale unless otherwise agreed with CPW staff. Accepted methods of payment are credit card (American Express, Mastercard, Visa), check, money order, cash, or Paypal. New York City sales tax (8.875%) is charged on any purchases picked up or delivered in New York State, unless the purchaser has given CPW a valid resale exemption. Tax-exempt numbers should be registered the night of the sale or placed on absentee bid forms. Purchases shipped outside New York State may be subject to the sales tax of those states. The cost for shipping is not included in the auction bids. Upon request, art work can be mailed by US Mail or FedEx. The buyer agrees to pay the cost of shipping and handling of no less than $125, depending on weight and shipping address. Please contact the CPW staff to determine the exact cost or if you would like to make alternative shipping arrangements. If you have any questions, please call CPW at (845) 679-9957. Most importantly, all proceeds from the Benefit Auction sale will go to fund CPW’s year-round artist-centered programs!
