Workshop Report for 2008

Pottery workshop, where we were surrounded by warm clay and smell of it, would make you concentrate and distress as well as wanting to spend time learning the different techniques to create your own masterpiece. A whole new exciting experience awaits children and adults from different age groups in workshops specially made for them. Although his ardent passion for pottery and the willingness to pass on his knowledge to others, he claims that there’s a certain limit he has, for doing pottery in Singapore, as there are not many potters here and the limitation of space . He would love to seize any opportunity where he could exhibit or sell his craft works, but due to the high rental of space, he is dampened by it.

Through pottery, one can express their creativity and enables release of stress. In other words, a form of art therapy.

Mr. Boon hopes that pottery would be acknowledged by most of the people in our society and that one day there would be more potters who can share the same interest as him as well as create exceptional masterpieces.

Located in a quaint shop at Aliwal Street, Quilts ‘N Sew Forth brings the craft of quilting alive. The beginner’s workshop consisted of a few weeks’ sessions, seeing us through the completion of the cutest baby quilt. Apart from Quilting concentrating Made easy on the designing and quilting aspects, Brigitte’s intensive course also allowed us to explore the pattern, template making and basic sewing methods. We got more familiar with the quilting jargon, and discovered that patchwork has evolved into a crafty expression, embraced for its aesthetic appeal.

Many bead makers face the problem of bad lighting while crafting, OTT LITE ™ True Color™ developed a line of natural lighting in order to avoid these problems. Now we lucky Singaporeans will be able to bead in natural light without any electric transformer. Visit Purple Beads to get your very own OTT LITE ™ True Color ™ and see the difference in your beading! 220 Orchard Road #03-09 Midpoint Orchard Singapore 238852 Tel: 6735 7030 Fax: 6836 1278 Email: purplebeads328@yahoo.com

Workshop Report

Purple beads customizes classes for beginners and professionals at the store, according to their preferences and abilities, and also sells a variety of quality delica beads and all the material needed for beads stictching. Different courses include beads crochet, knitting and weaving among others.

Quilts ‘n sew Forth 64, Aliwal Street 6736 2108

Patchwork has evolved as an artistic and crafty expression and quilts can also be used as wall hangings, bags and pouches.

The concept of quilting was initially conceived for climatic purposes. In such a hot country like Singapore, one could ask why quilting? Well, according to Brigitte Lee, owner of Quilts ‘N Sew Forth, quilting nowadays is done for sheer enjoyment and pleasure. Patchwork has evolved as an artistic and crafty expression and quilts can also be used as wall hangings, bags and pouches. Quilting essentially consists of binding together the three layers- the top, the batting and the backing - by stitching interesting and decorative designs to form a quilt. Brigitte has been quilting since the age of 20, and today, she is the proud owner of the quaint and pretty retail space and workshop at Aliwal Street, located behind Arab Street. Apart from being the largest distributor of quilt supplies and cotton fabrics from the USA in this region, Quilts ‘N Sew Forth also holds workshops for those interested in quilting.

You might be wondering what is so special about quilting. When you look at a quilt, it is like reading a story book- each quilt has its own tale, where the patchworks reflect a special moment, a festival, or personality traits of someone. They are built upon and conceptualized according to a theme. For instance, an airplane- themed quilt would have a dark green, forest background in order to imply that the planes are flying over the jungle.

09 Sounds interesting right? Why not try a beginners’ workshop at Quilts ‘N Sew Forth to uncover those hidden talents of yours. The beginner’s course is effectively designed for those who may know nothing about stitching. The first project for all beginner classes is the baby quilt, which takes approximately 6 sessions to complete. The learning curve is taught progressively and systematically throughout these 6 sessions. The first 3 weeks consist of tutorials on pattern and template making, and basic hand and machine sewing. The following sessions follow the designing and quilting outline, while using techniques such as binding, piecing or appliqué. Students also become more familiar with quilting tips and the jargon. For instance, did you know that the difference between piecing and appliqué is that while piecing, one sews 2 pieces of fabrics together while appliqué consists of sewing the fabric on top of the patchwork? Well, neither did I before visiting Quilts ‘N Sew Forth!

If you are not too sure about your sewing abilities, you could also try the one- day classes offered at the store. These workshops make extensive use of fabrics, gluing and taping them together in order to make a chosen product. One can book classes for making sewing boxes, teddy bears, butterfly cushions and seasonal balls made of folded fabrics! Moreover, Quilts ‘N Sew Forth has also been following the eco- friendly trend. You can join their eco- friendly classes to make a funky, foldable bag which is not only convenient for you, but also gentle on our environment! Brigitte believes that the more in the class, the merrier it is. Each class usually has more than 3 students, so as to make the session more interesting, interactive, and educative for the students as well as the teacher. The talented quilter is very attentive to the needs of the students, and is flexible in her teaching methods in order to suit their pace and requirements.

Apart from workshops, one can also custom order quilts from the shop. It takes about a year to custom make the quilt, and Brigitte usually works on a given theme. With such a vast plethora of services and products offered, it is really a delight to visit the shop. And if you have already started thinking of your Christmas gifts, what better way to please a loved one then by making them a handmade quilt, cushion or bag in order to touch their heart strings!

Floral arrangement has come a long way today, from simply arranging flowers in decorative vases, to contemporary and innovative arrangements and designs. We are accustomed to filling up empty spaces with flower vases, but how many of us really take the time to arrange them properly and thoughtfully match them with our settings? Craftholic pondered on the process and techniques of floral arrangement and decided to learn the ABC of this craft. Nobleman School of Floral Design gave us exactly what we were looking for: a basic foundation and different clear principles of floral arrangement, while motivating us to gain confidence and let our creativity flow naturally.

There is certainly no dearth of different types of beads and crystals to adorn our jewelry. However, human nature demands that we portray our individualism through what we wear. Therefore, instead of taking up the usual bead classes, we showed up at N’craftroom for some eco goodness. How, you may ask? Naoko, senior instructor and nature lover, utilizes natural seeds to embellish her jewelry. Her favorite saga seeds are seen on different accessories, while Jyuzu and Rudraksha seeds ornament intricate pieces. Naoko assisted us with the designing and styling of the natural elements, rendering them into our own unique accessories.

Pottery can create exquisite works of art as well as household items such as vases, dishes, bowls and lamps. Through pottery, one can express their creativity and enables release of stress. In other words, a form of art therapy.

A splendid experience indeed! Mr. Boon’s workshop cum gallery displays ceramics and clay done by his students as well as him.

The commonly used method is using the potter’s wheel. The clay is centered upon the wheel that spins the clay while it is being mould by the hand. Unique designs and decoration can be incised before the clay is allowed to dry.

A trip to Mr. Boon’s pottery workshop was entertaining yet educational. Mr. Boon, who has been doing pottery for 10 years, could create something from a lump of clay into a masterpiece of art in just 5 minutes. Over there, I was thought how to mould a small lump of clay using the pinching method by one of his instructors. The outcome of my creation was a square-shaped bowl with my initials carved on it.

’c

Another method is simply pinching a small lump of clay into the desired shape. This method, which is common in the Southwest, is applicable when creating miniature pots and bowls.

Eunice Choy’s belief that ‘anyone can scrapbook; you don’t need any skills, just a love for craft’ encouraged us to try our hand at a scrapbooking workshop. We met her over an afternoon session as her Choa Chu Kang studio, and were amazed to discover the tremendous amount of paraphernalia available to decorate our scrapbooking piece. Her keen eye and constant contact with latest developments and trends in the scrapbooking world taught us how to scrapbook efficiently and practically, while keeping the finished product most aesthetically pleasing.

N

There are different methods of pottery. One of them is coiling, where it involves creating long, narrow coils which are spiraled upwards to form the shape of a vessel. This is then smoothened to give a nice and even finish to the strengthened coils.

Pottery is an embellishing and useful ware made of baked clay. It is first shaped out of clay mixture using different methods according to preference, decorating and glazing the item, and then followed by baking at high temperature in a kiln to harden it. Firing them in a kiln will lead reactions that cause permanent changes, including increasing their strength and hardening and setting their shape and texture. The final outcome of the pottery depends on the type and amount of glazes, which requires a certain number of firings.

As the name suggests, Creative Escape is a space where craft lovers can get together and share their passions and talents. Craftholic caught up with Arden, director of the retreat to try out her glass fusing workshop. The concept sounds simple: using glass in a liquid and soft form after being heated at a very high temperature, then fusing together two or more pieces of glass to create a solid brilliant metallic dichroic or colored accessory. Simple? Quite. Fun? Tremendously so! Making our own jewelry through this funky, relatively unexplored method was one experience we will not forget any time soon.

When researching on eco-friendly craftwork, I encountered foreign websites. When I click the tab for Singapore, I only identified with Pauseability’s eco-creations (www. pauseability.etsy.com), which I introduced earlier to Craftholic readers. Actually, I’m not sure if our local crafters make handicrafts using recycled materials. We needed an online community. Hence, after discussing with my fellow KBCC (Knotty Bicsie Crafting Club) friends, we decided to start a blog last month on crafting with recycled materials.. We hope to share ideas & links to sites on eco-friendly Art & Craft creations & projects. We look forward to having more friends onboard to join our crafting journey.

Knotty Bicsie, my little Indie Label, was only possible with the blessings & encouragement from family & friends. Last month, I had my first solo exhibition, Mee Suah, to express close-knit relationships, experiences I take from my personal life. Mee Suah is a traditional Hokkien cuisine, served during occasions like birthdays, Lunar New Year & weddings. Hence, Mee Suah to me, signifies a bond between people. Through knitting & crochet, through this intriguing labyrinth of colours, I hope to depict camaraderie. Mee Suah was a special tribute to my loved ones for making our shared dreams come true – my very first solo exhibition!

Located at Tanglin Place, Boon’s Pottery is everything clay. We had the opportunity to make our own squareshaped bowls and inscribing our initials on our masterpieces during the class. Possibilities are endless- techniques are abundant. We only had time for the pinching technique, but that was enough to make us fall in love with the awe inspiring process of pottery making. What we’re passionate about delivering: an environment infused with art, culture and fresh creativity to inspire and enrich.

When I was a kid, my mom would always push me towards all kinds of lessons- I have taken all types of classes, including arts and crafts. While at that time I would complain that it just ate into my play time, today, I cannot thank mom enough for dragging me from one lesson to another. Well, to be fair to my grumblings, at my time, there were no workshops like D’Atelier!

A pretty innovative and new concept in Singapore, the workshop follows the Reggio Emilia’s learning principles of using the arts as a way of learning. They have designed a curriculum based on this philosophy, in order to create a full fledged space where kids can explore different materials and thus cultivate creative and experimental thinking. The workshop strives to concentrate not only on the aesthetic of the end product, but mainly on the journey of self expression and creativity. Through this process, kids obtain intangible benefits which are important later in life. They are given a free rein to explore subjects and materials, expressing their own perception and ideas. This holistic program thus enables children to think out of the box. In today’s competitive environment, such views are welcome and honed upon. Of course, some art and play therapy is included in the curriculum too to make the learning more fun. D’Atelier encourages the use of different materials to make and create different items. For instance, recycled test tubes as glass buildings, or old cardboards as roads! Anything goes, as long as the child expresses himself wholly and without any restriction. They work with textures, forms and shapes, inculcating a habit to explore and gain experiences through touching, moving, listening, seeing and hearing. Kids from 18month to 12years can join the regular workshops available: this entails a class a week for 10 sessions, where kids are given a loosely defined theme to work upon. More often than not, themes are season based, for example Christmas, thus giving plenty of scope for innovation and resourceful thinking. After ten to twelve months of course work, the child will be given an opportunity to

exhibit his/ her 865 Mountbatten Road #02-38 work and invite +65 63482850 parents, relatives and friends to admire the masterpiece! Through this course, proud parents will experience their child’s very first graduation, where their little boy or girl will be dressed in their own handmade graduation gown. Throughout their creative journey, the students will constantly be photographing their progress, which they will eventually make into a special scrapbook. D’Atelier also wishes to establish ‘concept workshops’ which will run during the weekends for some after school fun for kids. These workshops encompass arts and crafts such as ceramics, cartoon workshops, painting with acrylic, as well as Chinese calligraphy. I am sure that if I was given such an opportunity as a child, i.e., to play, create and learn while crafting, I would definitely never grumble! This holistic approach is not only suitable for your child, but also aids in acquainting him with the free and creative thinking of crafting. And as a bonus, many materials used are recycled, thus gentle on our environment as well as parents’ pockets!

tate, who would have ever imagined that such tremendous talent lurked behind the heavy and impersonal metallic doors of the estate? Owned by Janet and her son Luke, Genesis Glass Arts is a family business that started as a hobby for Janet, some 30 years ago. She then passed her knowledge to her son Luke, now 34 years old, who has since been ‘playing’ with glass since his early childhood. From ‘playing’ to profession, Luke carried on his mother’s passion despite having majored in Business and not arts and craft. The inner artist in Luke couldn’t ignore his real talent.

Dear Posh, I may just start

believing in love at first sight after today. I saw these cutest hand crafted brooches made of a variety of vintage and new fabrics and buttons and beads which completely bowled me over. Brooches you may wonder, who wears them nowadays. But being a fellow crafter, you should know best that a hand crafted item is special because it is unique, imperfect and reflective of the crafter’s personality and moods. And it is even more exciting and apt when the crafter is as quirky, fun, creative and volatile as Eugenie! Craftholic caught up with the beauty and brains behind these adorable broochesEugenie Yeo. Currently working in advertising, she started making fabric brooches four years ago, when boredom got the best of her after returning from Australia back to Singapore. From boredom to passion, Eugenie’s craft hobby has grown into a musthave for all her friends.

It is amazing how much junk gets accumulated every day. And it often pinches us when we have to throw away a whole stack of old magazines or that tattered dress just because it is no longer ‘trendy’. Have you ever wondered just

how many trees may have been cut down just to end up as a stack of paper before ending up in the dustbin? So then, why throw away our old items, which ‘seem’ unusable? Well, if you put your mind to it, there is so much you can do with unwanted material. This idea was taken up by a young happy lady, Didier. She uses all kind of recyclable material to make practical new products.

Coming from a naturally crafty family (her father was a musician and her mother loves everything pertaining to craft), her passion for working with fabrics seemed to grow naturally. Eugenie tends to be a very visual person, absorbing

images around her and incorporating them in her work- for instance, she takes inspiration from spring, extensive travels to flea markets all over the world, her favorite designer Dries Van Noten’s use of ethnic colors and styles, and the tastes and preferences of loved ones. By mixing these various aspects of craft making, Eugenie succeeds in making absolutely innovative and special pieces each time. Each brooch also has a funky name and a specific story about its humble beginnings! Of course, not everyone knows exactly how to wear brooches, but Eugenie states that there are plenty of different ways to wearing one: over a top, a dress or on a bag, the

Eugenie has always been one to think out of the box- she is always brimming with new ideas in order to expand Dear Posh and promote craft! Lucky for us, her future plans include setting up an Etsy store and a website, while she also plans to sell her funky little brooches at different stores and maybe export her local delights to New York! The craftholic has also tried her hand in different crafts, such as jewelry making and t- shirt de signing. Moreover, she wishes to start Sunday afternoon craft sessions at local cafes, where people can craft various knick knacks while sipping their cappuccinos. Really, what is there not to absolutely love about these funky brooches and their even more funky and imaginative creator, Eugenie!

This eco-friendly crafter cum designer is trained in product industry design. Didier resides in Singapore, yes the same Singapore that offers would be Oscar-the-Grouches a lot of rubbish to choose from. Rubbish is a free resource, and

harmful to the environment. Didier hates and is appalled at people who throw away relatively new furniture in the name of fashion. There is so much one can do with old furniture, or anything for that matter! She utilizes old tyres, dresses, furniture, magazines, rice sacks, and plastic bottles to showcase a range of products. Her cutest product is probably the bow tyres with a lace covering, used as buckles or even corsages!

Didier is a very observant person- she gains inspiration from everything around her. In fact, she has done stints at florists and restaurants, which have inspired her and given her ideas for diverse products and goods. Her enjoyment at what she does and passion for recycling is reflected through the way she describes her craft. The eco friendly crafter is quite the perfectionist- each and every item is handmade, and Didier keeps striving to make her hand crafts look more professional! No worries there Didier, Craftholic can vouch for the fact that your finished products will make Ernie jealous. And maybe Big Bird.

The origins of her brand name, ‘Dear Posh’, come from the fact that Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice, commented on Eugenie’s journalist friend’s quirky brooch and asked her where she got it from! Quite posh, right! From then on, Eugenie has not looked back once and has been growing her craft steadily.

That is how she actually gained more awareness about recycling! In fact, the crafter is so passionate that every single thing she uses, i.e., from her bag to her wallet to her hat, is all made of recyclable products! Very cool huh? Moreover, another incentive for her to pursue this craft is the fact that she gains tremendous satisfaction in transforming a seemingly unusable and useless product into an interesting item. When constructing, Didier always makes sure that she uses the whole material, be it a tyre or an old dress, so as to ensure

As we sign off, we ask Luke if he has any wise words to share with young aspiring artists. He pauses for a second, and finally utters some words of encouragement to all of us: ‘Keep with it in spite of obstacles, hardships or discouragement and never think that you’ve mastered it – this fuels the never ending quest for perfection.’

To be young and passionate is one thing, but to be young, passionate and actually have the ability to reach for the stars is just marvelous. Craftholic enjoyed meeting the young origami artist in his early twenties, Kelvin Atmadibrata for our paper issue. His passion for origami spilled over from a childhood legacy of folding papers, which has become a from her career choice for this young man. come imagination, and she comments that she likes The combination of his two loves, flowers floralwhich are both ‘gorgeous and Japanese arrangement and origami has motivated styled’- rhododendrons, peony Kelvin to find more and more ways to and chrysanthemums are just some of her favorites. fold papers, and break the traditional Colors used usually depend mould on her mood- she has a strong Everyand life explore different techniques, created by every personwith is Art. allegiance with colors ‘full of passion’. Luke has taught over 500 students at schools and during workshops at his studio, and has completed over hundreds of stained glass pieces, projects and panels. Ironically, the crafter’s favorite piece is the first one he made all by himself- a design of a 1950s Oldsmobile. He crafts every single day of his life, and what keeps him going is that he loves what he is doing. This is really the greatest achievement according to the artist/ crafter. Indeed, Luke states that Glass Art is both an art and a craft- it requires artistic sensibility as well as masterful craftsmanship.

Being innovative and experimental, he is always striving towards perfection, and believes that once an artist thinks that he has mastered the craft, the motivation to excel will cease. That is why he is constantly learning, striving to improve his skills and judgment at each step. He and his mother have already excelled in the processes of Stained Glass, from Design, Glass Cutting to Fabrication, and Luke aspires to ‘develop an all-round competency in the entire Glass Art realm.’ What are his plans for the future? ‘The next step for me in the Glass Arts is Hot Glass, i.e. Glass Blowing & Making.’

“A man without imagination is a man without wings”. Through PMC silver clay, her imagination took flight into another universe! She found herself thinking of countless ideas to give traditional motifs a contemporary look, so the modern generation can see the original significance behind the design, and learn to value its history, instead of thinking that it as dull and out-of-date. Since taking the course, she has made necklaces of Orchid blooms in various sizes, a pendant of a vase with Ikebana, a Chinese cloudmotif lock pendant, a Chinese style 3-dimentional floral carving with stone-setting and 22K gold-plating, a woven Bird-of-Paradise, a pair of rattan weave and a pair of Chinese brushstroke character cufflinks and many more. She will continue developing her design skill with endless possibilities with Silver clay.

He personally prefers abstract subjects, since they ‘pick up on the unique qualities of the Stained Glass medium and its dynamic nature, due to changing light intensity. Abstract designs are classic, timeless and enduring.’ Luke describes his art as an eclectic work in progress.

Naoko-san, her instructor from N’craftroom describes Anna as an “excellent designer who can reborn traditional Chinese to modern silver design”.

“How amazing is that? It’s unbelievable how easily it is done.”

Naoko-san, her instructor, was a God-send with infinite patience, vast experience and a nimble mind that can give ideas for the most intricate designs. It also helped that they had similar interests in Asian culture, and have an ardent love for nature. She was always inspired by the orchids in her garden and the Oriental antiques in her home, and she’s always bringing something from her garden to experiment with, or using clay to mimic traditional knots.

It was around June 2007, when Anna learned about the Silver Clay Precious Metal Clay (PMC) Certificate Course offered at N’craftroom. She had learnt about it from a friend and wasted no time in signing up for the course. The subsequent 1 1/2 months became a whirlwind of fun experiments, exciting discoveries and astonishing results. She explained about how the silver clay process is like alchemy… first, work with soft clay, pop your work into the kiln and fire for 10 minutes, and your masterpiece comes out in 999 pure Silver.

Bead Jewellery

She was browsing through the colorful shops on a street when she entered what seemed as a lace shop. Her curiousity leads her to buy her first lot of gemstone beads and a beading tool starter set. Soon, Anna was happily creating pieces and pieces of jewellery for her own use. She was making jewellery even when she was wheeled into the hospital labor ward, waiting to deliver her third baby! Before long, people started asking her about the jewellery which she was wearing, and it was then, her husband commented that she should consider selling them. That was when Lush Jewels ~ by Anna was born.

When asked how come he developed an interest in the arts and glass painting in particular, Luke candidly states: ‘Well, I was influenced by my mum from a very early age, who took it up first as a hobby, then into a full-fledged professional studio. It seemed natural for me to follow suit and pick it up.’
