Karishma (Marketing/ Writer)

Karishma, like most people, has a penchant for pretty and cute items. Vibrant colors and uniquely hand crafted items make her smile and awe at other people’s innate talents. Despite her insane need to gush over handmade crafts, she has never gone further from doodling in her books during lengthy classes. Her apparent lack of creativity is made up by her fascination and love for travelling and learning about new cultures and traditions. Her favorite cities would probably be Mumbai and Hong Kong. Two cities which never sleep, and are always so full of life, energy and characterized by indescribable eclectic personalities

henna aRt Henna as a cultural form of temporary tattoos is a common sight in Singapore. It originates from the Eastern Mediterranean, used mostly during weddings and important occasions. The name Henna is derived from the flowering plant, where the concentrated dye is used for many traditional and commercial functions. In Singapore, it is most commonly used to dye skin, hair and fingernails. The women would dye their bodies in elaborate patterns. Henna is regarded as a blessing, and is applied for luck, joy and beauty. That is why floral henna marks the hands and feet of many Indian and Middle-Eastern brides today. . For many cultures, the application of henna remains a cornerstone of ‘female camaraderie’, a time for conversation and sharing of stories.

learning and finding innovative ideas because of the ever-changing nature of flowers.

A B C FLORA ARRANGEMENT Workshop Report

THE

In the rush of everyday life, we seldom have the time to stop and smell the roses. Literally. We tend to take our natural surroundings for granted and do not appreciate the true beauty of nature. The vibrancy of the flowers and the ever-changing character of our surrounding environment is what first attracted Anson Low, principal of Nobleman School of Floral Design, to the beautiful hobby of floral arrangement. He loves the fact that there is no limit in the world of creative designing- one can keep learning and finding innovative ideas because of the ever-changing nature of flowers. Today you

OF

bud, but tomorrow, it could blossom and be totally different. This challenge and the flowers’ constant ability to surprise have become an integral part of Anson’s life. A florist by profession, Anson Low started the school in 1994. Despite the trials and tribulations that awaited him, he managed to overcome them and has since set up one of Asia’s leading floral schools. He first started by reading many floral design books, and tried his hand at the craft and learnt by trial and error. Most importantly, his never failing sense of passion has always been constant and has helped him pursue his profession. The basics of understanding and arranging flowers are all taught at Nobleman School of Floral Design. Since the past fourteen years, they have been teaching floral arrangement for different levels, from beginners, professionals and advanced diploma courses. The main aim

b

of NSFD is to teach the ABC of floral design- students have become aware of the different basic principles about floral arrangement. From this important step, they will gain confidence and their creativity will flow naturally. As long as there is a clear direction and a basic foundation, there is no end to the creativity and confidence.

Class timings are usually flexible, depending on students. The class atmosphere is interactive, since there are usually 4 instructors per session, giving personalized training. One of the most popular courses has been the Lifestyle Floral Design, where students are taught how to make effective use of the space in their homes, or office, and avoid using flowers which may clash with the décor.

Due to the fact that Nobleman School of Floral Design uses real flowers, the level of perishability is very high. One cannot keep flowers for more than a week. Most imported flowers are available in the market so you must really be careful when buying them. One quick tip: when checking whether a flower is fresh, make sure that the bottom part of the blossomed flower is hard, and does not seem hollow! You do not want to spend money on beautiful flowers to find them wilting at home! Our conversation with Anson left us marveling at his deep passion for floral arrangement: he believes strongly that travelling enhances a floral designer’s experiences and creativity. He has visited Europe and Asia, and has also done floral arrangements for weddings in Mumbai and the Philippines. Not only has this taught him a lot about different cultures, but it has also made him knowledgeable about his profession. Anson’s motivation and passion is inspirational; he is always up-todate with the latest trends, and travelling inspires him to keep

b

He loves the fact that there is no limit in the world of creative designing - one can keep

striving to do better. In fact, he has also been featured in International Floral Art, a yearly publication from Belgium featuring the best floral arrangements from around the world! The crafter regularly participates in floral design workshops and seminars worldwide, and is off to Spain next month, after a 2 months hiatus from travelling to Japan and Italy. NSFD also took part in the Singapore Garden Festival and won the Silver award for Best Decorated Booth and gold award for Floral Windows.

As you can see, floral designing entails as much creativity, passion and experience as any other craft. In fact, Anson believes that Singaporeans will be aware of the intricacies and principles of floral designing in years to come and comments that there is definitely a future for the industry! After all, flowers and nature of part of our everyday life!

Known as PMC, the idea of Precious Metal Clay was conceived in 1994 by Mitsubishi Materials Japan, in order to combine the elements of clay and precious metals. Craftholics will be glad to know that they can make their own jewelry from pure silver and will be able to inject their own quirky style in their precious accessories collection. What is PMC? Precious Metal Clay consists of Pure Silver particles, which are suspended with moist binders, popularly known as ‘clay’. The consistency is 90% silver and 10% binder and water, which consequently - after the piece is fired - becomes 99.9% pure silver. In a short time, PMC has become a popular craft for hobbyists. Through the use of suitable tools and firing methods, we are now able to design special jewelry pieces in small classes or even at home. The clay is easily molded into any shape, and jewelers can now stamp their interesting styles on the pieces. This enables them to achieve effects through methods, which had never been available before.

PMC workshops in Singapore Classes are available for those who want to learn the craft. Students are taught how to use PMC and design their own jewelry at N’Craftroom.

P M C

The workshop is the sole distributor of PMC and also the only certified senior instructor of the craft in Singapore. Students have to go through six levels of techniques before receiving this certificate. Together with other PMC artists in Singapore, N’craftroom has initiated a PMC Artist Club this year. PMC Artist Club

PMC lovers and clubs already exists in countries such as USA, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and the craft is growing in popularity in Singapore too. The advantages of joining the PMC Artist Club in Singapore are numerous. Firstly, PMC artists are given an opportunity to expand their knowledge through interaction with other members, while promoting their works through exhibitions and craft shows organized by several groups. Anyone can join the club, even beginners and non-instructors who would still enjoy the benefits of being a Friendship member. Yes, the biggest advantage would be the 10% discount obtained at N’craftroom for the purchase of all PMC materials. Members are made up of locals and foreigners staying in singapore.

11

ARTIST CLUB

The PMC Artist Club aims to promote this craft and give opportunities to all PMC artists to explore and endorse their talents. In fact, our local members also joined in a most prestigious competition organized by the PMC Guild Japan, where three of our instructors won awards pipping hundreds of participants! The club invites Craftholic readers to become members and enjoy the craft as we do!

Crafter of the Month Saori from Madam Fu

14

TEXT Karishma / PHOTO Madam-Fu

The artist has been painting for many years, and the most interesting feature in her art work is the use of different materials such as resin, fabrics, clay, gems, hair, and her most recent choice, wood. She goes beyond the usual flat 2D paintings and produces remarkable 3D mixed media pieces.

When I viewed her pieces, I felt that her art works spoke to me.

Saori’s love for drawing first attracted her to this profession, and the fact that there are individuals inspired by her art work would tell her that it cheered them up made her more determined to persist in her passion! After the artist’s graduation, she started drawing illustrated books in Japan, which was a difficult period for her because the market for such books was already saturated. However, despite the trials and tribulations she faced, we are fortunate that Saori did not give up and instead, persevered to become a well-regarded 3D artist today!

MadaM

Fu

Her track record is really impressive- she studied Fine Arts in Parson’s School of Design in New York and Kyoritsu Women’s University, Tokyo. Additionally, she has over ten solo exhibitions in both Tokyo and New York respectively. She has also received an award at the 2004 Chelsea Global Art Competition in the Big Apple!

Her motivation comes from the people nearest to her. In them, she can see happiness or hope and she thus attempts to capture these feelings in her art. Another inspiration for her drawing techniques is the Edoera (longest Japanese period from 1603- 1867), which is the most prestigious period for arts and culture in Japan. On many occasions, Saori comments that she gets her inspiration by the ‘Person’; which according to her, is a stand-alone art piece.

Every life created by every person is Art. She compares this philosophy with a flower’s life cycle. The only way humans differ from them is that they wish they too can bloom. Similarly, she aspires to express humans as blossomed beings.

This concept can be easily translated from her AMAPORA collection, which features three life stages of a woman: as a young girl, a middle aged woman and finally, an old lady. The young girl’s hair is made of flower buds, which grows into partially blossomed flowers for the middle-aged woman. Lastly, the old lady’s tresses are fully bloomed into red, pink and yellow flowers! We can only marvel at such genius. As you can tell, the use of flowers is prominent in Madam Fu’s work- sometimes used as the center piece, or sometimes as a woman’s cascading tresses. Most of the flowers

15 come from her imagination, and she comments that she likes flowers which are both ‘gorgeous and Japanese styled’- rhododendrons, peony and chrysanthemums are just some of her favorites. Colors used usually depend on her mood- she has a strong allegiance with colors ‘full of passion’. Red is her most darling color!

An artist strives for the ideal of engagement - that people should feel their passion and be inspired when they see the works. Thankfully, we can all have this chance to see her appealing art works since Saori is constantly producing new pieces and finding cafes or restaurants to exhibit the fruits of her passion. She is currently working on the piece which can be a show case cabinet for her favorite accessories.

Crafter of the Month

Crafter of the Month

Saori is the driving force and talent behind the art works of Madam Fu. One easy way to spot her love for all beautiful things is her choice of name: she loves the Japanese character ふ (Fu) meaning Madam and her surname comes from her family’s proud lineage.

Their 3D texture gives the impression that it is ready to leap out of the picture frame, and yet it manages to strike the observer with its vibrancy and eclectic mix of ideas.

When she is not painting, the talented mother of an adorable eight-month old daughter has tried her hand at many crafts such as polymer clay and has interesting views on New York and Singapore. She compares both cities, and says that our small country is the Asian New York! Cosmos with Carrie Bradshaw anyone? :) The reason for this comparison is the fact that both cities possess the luxury of diversity or “melting pots of cultures”. However, this would not hold true for the art scene. According to Saori, the art and crafts industry can be developed in Singapore. Yet, she speaks with enthusiasm about the Art Biennale taking place from September to November this year, and claims that she is really looking forward to it! On this last word, Craftholic is searching for nice place to exhibit Madam Fu Art works in Singapore. Any of you who are interested to drop us an idea, Please contact Saori or Craftholic.

Dear Crafters,

Flowers, sunshine, love, happiness, smiles… these things always go hand-in-hand to paint a perfectly beautiful picture. In this letter, I’ll introduce to you two jovial crafters who are inspired by flowers & sunshine in their creative work of heART. “It’s always a sunny day @SaltPlay!” This vibrant & cheerful motto makes SaltPlay a perfect online shop to be in this issue of Craftholic on “flower”. A freelance web designer and teacher in jewelry-making Elaine is also the creator of indie-label, SaltPlay, which carries a range of unique accessories, from necklaces & rings, to brooches & hair accessories. When Elaine first started SaltPlay in 2006, she “tested the market” at MAAD (Market for Artists & Designers) and a simple online shop. With two years of exposure, and equipped with her brilliant design ideas and her playful experiments with materials, Elaine has finally found a style she can now calls her own. Even her online shop has bloomed to reflect her inspirations from the colorful Mother Nature. For generic designs, check out www.saltplay.com For more exquisite design products, check out www.elainepang.com Jullie, on the other hand started selling her crafts online as a happy accident! I know what you must be thinking right now, because I’m envious too! As a kid, Jullie already showed passion and talent in handicraft. She always enjoys making little things to give to her Aunties and friends. In preparation for her own wedding two years ago, she was determined to make something for her “Sisters Troop” & Aunties. A good friend passed her a crochet book on flowers. She was so mesmerized by the beauty of hand-crochet flowers, she hasn’t stopped making them since then! Being very active in blogging, flickr and other online forums, Jullie’s intricately hand-crochet roses & calla lilies eventually found themselves an almost “incidental” fan club, especially among brides-to-be! Of course, Jullie never stops making “other little things”, which help makes her e “accidental” blogshop filled with cute Amigurumi (crochet stuffed toys) as well. ith th sed w to be able s e l Check out her cheerful creations at www.jullieteo.blogspot.com b am nds rean Flowers are always delightful. Decorate your house with some flowers and see how they’ll brighten up your home immediately. Yours sincerely, Betsy ^_^ betsy@knottybicsie.com.sg
