Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly. In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters. The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff. The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go. The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club.

Just four minutes later, Grant nearly had his second of the game but a low cross by Robertson caught the heel of the striker and it spun wide of the keepers left hand post. With the Owls having a man advantage, they looked to exploit this by moving the ball around and using long balls over the top to break their high defensive line.

Chances kept arising for the visitors as Dickens floated the ball into the box, Hanslip saw the Brody Robertson was making a run behind him and dummied his header but Robertson could not latch onto the ball with the goal gaping. Fortunes changed soon after in the 38th minute though. Oglesby pounced on a long ball forward by right back Luke Mascall but as he rounded the keeper he was upended and a penalty was awarded. Not only that, but Wells was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

squared the ball to Grant who laid it off to Hanslip but he could not find the back of the net.

As the clocked ticked into injury time a corner was won on the right hand side for the Owls. Oglesby swung the corner in, and Dickens headed it home at the far post much to the delight of the traveling support. The referee blew his whistle moments later to signal the end of the half. The Owls started the second half off as the first half had ended, creating chances and generally spreading the ball around effectively. It was only three minutes into the half when the first chance came. A corner from the right was headed goal bound by Hanslip but the keeper held the header well.

With the Owls on the ascendency, it was Cooper next to have a shot on goal as he took the ball past two defenders but he could only shoot wide of the mark from just outside the box. It was not long though until the ball was in the back of the net. Oglesby won a strong challenge on the right wing; he then played a delightful ball with the outside of his boot into the channel where Grant was to coolly dispatch his second goal of the game. With the Owls having an unassailable lead against 10 men you would think Pickering would struggle to c r e a t e c h a n c e . H o w e v e r, Pickering did find a way back into the game only four minutes later. Logan chased a long ball forward and as Steer was back peddling after deciding not to come for the ball, he delightfully chipped the ball home into the net.

Only seven minutes later and the three goal cushion was restored as Grant made sure of his hat trick with a deft 25 yard curler into the top corner. It was a goal right out the top drawer and as he peeled away to celebrate, the management team signaled that he was to be replaced by Heward.

dropped just wide of the right hand side post. The Pikes continued to press forward, giving the Owls little chance to get ahold of the ball and to play in wide areas like they are accustomed to. The pressure continued from Pickering though, frustrating not only the Owls with their impressive forward play but themselves as well with both Ramm and Joe Danby being caught offside on more than one occasions as they looked to break the back line of the Owls defence. Cleethorpes Town ran out 6-2 winners on Saturday against 10 men Pickering Town in the NCEL Premier Division. A hat trick from Louis Grant, alongside goals from Liam Dickens, Jack Barlow and Lawrence Heward saw off the North Yorkshire side. The Owls made just one change from their 3-0 midweek defeat to Bridlington Town bringing back in club captain Darren Hanslip with Jack Richardson moving to the bench.

With the Owls struggling to create any chance in the opening 15 minutes, it was winger Jonathan Oglesby who took matters into his own hands. He took ahold of the ball 25 yards out and unleashed a rasping effort on goal which whistled just inches over the bar.

This gave the Owls some impetuous as just 30 seconds later leading scorer Marc Cooper wasted a guilt edge chance as Grant and Alex Flett linked well to set up Cooper but he could only fire over the bar with just Toby Wells to beat in the Pickering goal. At the other end, the Owls where fortunate to keep out Logan as Steer misjudged a free kick which was played in from the left. His punch was very short, but Logan could not find room to muster a shot and the ball was ushered out of play for a goal kick. Only 60 seconds later, in the 20th minute, Logan really should of made it 1-0 to Pickering but he could not capitalise on a Dickens slip and as he raced clean through on goal the ball seemed to bobble just as he was about to pull the trigger and the ball trickled wide of the mark.

12

The Owls seemed to be getting a foot in in the game as the chances kept coming for them. Firstly, Hanslip tired an audacious overhead kick from outside the box but it went wide of the mark. Then, Hanslip dragged a shot wide after Cooper bumfuzzled his was past two defenders,

Before kick-off the teams lined up in an unfamiliar set-up with the pre-match photograph being with the teams mixed up. This was in commemoration of the 1914 Christmas Truce. Pickering kicked the game off and immediately went in search of the opening goal. Neat play between Ryan Cooper and Billy Logan set the latter free in on goal with just Damian Steer to beat. However, Steer stood strong and Logan could only fire his shot straight at the shot stopper much to the angst of the home fans.

GOOD afternoon and welcome back to The Bradley Community Stadium for the visit of Athersley Recreation in the NCEL Premier Division...

I would like to wish a warm welcome to our friends from Barnsley, Athersley Rec, the players, committee and supporters. I hope you enjoy your afternoon. I am writing this after just getting back from our fantastic win against league leaders Tadcaster Albion. I can probably state that it was our most accomplice performance to date. To a man, everyone put a great shift in and thoroughly deserved the victory. People will look at the result and think we were lucky. Nothing could have been further from the truth as we should

of won by more, we were that good. But we now must move onto today's game and make sure we continue with another great performance. It will be a tough encounter as they have in the past and I am sure Marcus will be gunning for revenge from the 1-0 defeat earlier in the season. Off the field things are starting to move at pace regarding the development at the linden club. We are meeting with the FA to p r e s e n t t h e m w i t h ou r dossier and hopefully they will see the benefit to the

whole club and community that this project will bring and support the funding which is required. I hope you all enjoy today's game. Cheer the lads on as I know it helps and we look forward to seeing you all again on the 27th December when we entertain Armthorpe. I wish you all a happy Christmas.

#FootballRemembers WHAT IS FOOTBALL REMEMBERS? ‘Football Remembers’ is the series of programmes and events being delivered jointly by the Premier League, The FA and the Football League, in partnership with the British Council, to commemorate the First World War. In 2014 most activity centres on one of the most iconic moments of the First World War, the 1914 Christmas Truce football match. Football Remembers kicked off in May 2014 when the partners launched a Football Remembers education pack that was sent to more than 30,000 schools across the UK. It includes resources to help children learn about the Truce and football’s role in recruitment and morale during the First World War. Football Remembers also features legacy projects that ensure young people will continue to learn about WW1 for decades to come. The programme will continue to 2018, highlighting the involvement of footballers and football. Along with the senior sides, Cleethorpes Town's junior sides proudly took part in the Football Remembers team photo event at the weekend. Pictured together are Cleethorpes Town Pattesons U10's and Grimsby Borough United U10's. Well done to everyone that took part. The Owl 30

GOOD afternoon to you and welcome to the Bradley Community Stadium for our NCEL Premier Division clash with Athersley Recreation... How can I start this any other way other than to say what a brilliant win Tuesday night was for us against league leaders Tadcaster Albion. It was a fantastic win. We work with a very talented bunch and when they are on their game they can beat anyone. We h a v e b e e n w i t h Darren Hanslip for a couple of games but he is now back. Darren is the skipper of the side and the leader of the team. He doesn't get the credit he deserves as he is not a flair player, but his work rate and unselfish attitude are second to none at this level. He set standards for everyone to follow, Darren is a quality player, any team would miss an integral part of their squad. To d a y s v i s i t o r s , Athersley, will be a very different ask as they are a good side who got a

one goal win over us early in the season but the result would have been very different had we taken our early chances. We will be out to rectify that result thought. We have a couple of injury concerns, firstly Lee McFarland is injured and Richard Peck is a concern with a dead leg but apart from that we are full strength.

Laslty, our traveling support (the Clee Town ultras) are getting quite a reputation for being vocal and really getting behind the boys. This is great and really drives the boys on so let's make some noise home and away. UP THE OWLS! Matthew Powell Assistant Manager

Gemma Charlton then slotted home to make it 4-2 after a great tackle from Hopkin saw the ball run through for Charlton who slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Zane Blow from last season and also Matty Pa y n e o f f the front two of Mikey Milne a n d Mackenzie Overend.

Saturday 25th October saw the “A” team travel to Caistor to play Caistor Tennyson in the league. With a few players unavailable from last week 6 changes were made with 5 new players coming into the squad. Josh Thompson was in goal with Mikey Bleasdale from the Under 18's side making his debut at right wing back. Mark Smith continuing on the left with a new pairing of Matt Russell alongside Tom Wingate at centre half. Debutants Jamie Smith, Sebastian Blyth in midfield alongside the returning

Ben Cadman was a sub who was also making his first appearance. The Owls came straight out the blocks and after ten minutes a Bleasdale cross fell too Milne who controlled it with his knee and fired into the bottom corner from 15 yards. They continued to make more chances but was caught on the counter attack with a Caistor forward firing in from outside the box. They then found themselves 2-1 down with minutes remaining in the first half when Caistor worked in from the right and smashed the ball home.

CleethorpesTownFC

Page Sponsor A quick response was required and it duly happened when Bleasdale played a long ball looking for Milne when the keeper and a Caistor defender got in a muddle, Milne nipped in scoring from a tight angle right on half time. The second half was a bit scrappy but the Owls got the ball in the net through a quality drive from 20 yards by Overend but was ruled out for an offside. Caistor scored the 5th goal of the game from a long ball that eluded the back four with the forward getting in to score what would be the winner. Thompson made a quality penalty save in the last few minutes as they pushed for an equaliser. On Saturday they travel to Louth to play Louth Old Boys in the Town Trophy, with a 2:15 kick off. “Top six is realistic but I know all the lads and the coaching staff have high expectations and we would be gutted if we didn’t gain promotion.”

Alex, we are doing well in the league, did brilliantly in the FA Cup and the FA Vase, give us your thoughts on the season so far. We had have a great start to the season but we lost a few games we shouldn’t of done. We just need to keep on winning and picking up points.

You left Bradford City in August 2011, then went on to Osset Albion, then Brigg Town, before settling with the Owls in 2012. How did the move come about to join up with Cleethorpes Town. I played for the junior side when I was younger, I ended up speaking to Tommy Watson and the You have played in most of the matches so far rest is history. this season, what would you say has been your toughest game? You are now 5th in the order of most It has to be the 5-4 win over Gresley in the FA appearances for the Owls, having played over Cup. It was end to end and really tough but we 80 times, how does this make you feel? eventually won and it was an amazing night. It is good to have a few appearances but I want to gain more and help the Owls gain promotions Which one of your 3 goals so far this season up the football pyramid. was you most pleased about scoring? The one against Shaw Lane in the last minute. It You come across as a very laid back individual, only just sneaked over the line but it put the but we want to know, what really annoys game to bed and was so relieved when the you?! referee awarded the goal. Only two things really annoy me, Liverpool fans and Jack Barlow and Jack Richardson at work! Playing with some of the best players in the county must be great, but tell me who you Your only 22 and still have a long career ahead think has been the best this season and why? of you, what are your realistic expectations I would not only have to say Marc Cooper for the going forward? goals he has scored so far, but also Darren I would like to play a bit higher, hopefully with Hanslip for the drive he gives us. Clee Town, if not maybe another team in the future. Not many people probably know, but you played in a League Two match for Bradford Lastly, where do you think the Owls will finish City against Crewe where the Bantams lost in the table? 5-1. What was that experience like? Top six is realistic but I know all the lads and the The whole day was very surreal. Playing in front coaching staff have high expectations and we of so many fans was great, it was a good would be gutted if we didn’t gain promotion. experience at such a young age.
