DAVE PATTERSON CHAIRMAN OF CLEETHORPES TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

what a prestigious day for the club... Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen welcome to the Linden Homes Club. It is a honour to be holding this prestigious event and we will be doing everything possible to make sure you 04 THE OWL

are enjoying the day. Everyone involved with Cleethorpes Town have been working tirelessly to make sure everything is taken care off and I applaud them all. Good luck to all the teams involved in the football and I am sure it will be an exciting day of football. Up the Owls!

I joined the Army in 1983, followed many members of my family into the Royal Army Medical Corps. During basic training I played inter troop matches, and after five months of running and gym work I was fitter than I had ever been.

was a centre-half of some repute, and capped by the Army, but for this game he was starting in central midfield, which transpired next was probably the greatest 90 minutes I have ever been involed in as a player.

I was post to my first unit 16 Field Ambulance in Aldershot, in the Army. Wednesday afternoon was “Sports Afternoon” and I got selected for my first unit game. We were playing 12 Signals Squadron on Queens Avenue with a 2pm kick-off. I played in midfield and after ten minutes I realised these games were quite intense and physical. We won 3-1 and back we went back to the unit bar for a few pints and the usual pie and chips!

On a wet November afternoon the RAMC beat the mighty REME 3-2. To put into modern day content it was like a Division 3 club beating a Premier League side on their patch. My biggest memory of that game was with 15 minutes to go, Legs came over to me and said, “Pip, swop with me til the end, I’m knackered”, which I did. After, in the dressing room, the Corps Manager Nobby Garbutt produced the phrase that become synonymous for that season “Lads you’ve sweated blood for the Corps today.”

A few weeks later I got called into the RSM;s office. “Got a signal here Private Dunn, you have been selected for the Corps trials next week!” The following week I attended the trial at Keogh Barracks, and at the end I got selected! I was so proud, although not being a Corps it was still an honour. I was about to follow in the footsteps of my Uncles Alan and Peter, both of which I looked up to. The Corps competition started a few weeks later. I started at centre-half. We won the first game 2-1. The lads from all the units from all over the country came together and we won. Back to the NAFFI for a few pints and “Pie and Chips!” The next few fixtures were tough, the big four: The REME, The Artillery, The Royal Engineers, and the Royal Signs. All full of Army players and Corps four times the size of ours. Two weeks later we face the REME away at Bordon. That day I had the honour and privilege to play in the same side as my Uncle Peter for the first time. We were only born a few years apart and grew up together. He was and still is my hero. “Legs”

That game was the catalyst for a remarkable season. We beat all the “Big Four” and went unbeaten. A remarkable feat in many ways. We only got together once a fortnight and many of us were on operational tours, especially Northern Ireland. You would be on patrol on a Thursday morning and on a flight Thursday night, play on the Friday and fly back Saturday morning and be back on duty on the Saturday afternoon. Personally that season was memorable for a number of reason. I had been part of something special I had played with my hero and I then for into the Army squad, I was representing my country! I made my Army debut at the Aldershot Military Stadium against the Army BAOR, alongside Guy Whittingham (Pictured Right), Matt Carmichael and Mike Cheatham who all turned professional! What made this more special was the bond.We had fought for our Country on the battlefield and we then battled together on the “field of sport” as many before us had done! Mascall but he skewed his shot wide of the mark. At the other end, Adam Baker went close with a volley from inside the box but this was blocked by Tim Lowe then Carl Stewart’s looping header was cleared off the line by Liam Dickens. However, The Brewers did finally have the ball in the back of the net with 23 minutes on the clock. Greening latched onto a through ball by Corner who controlled it well flicking it over the head of Lowe. Greening then side footed it past the on-rushing Higton to give Tadcaster the lead. The Owls did not take this lying down though and previous wins over Tadcaster gave them the confidence to not only get into the game but to take the lead with two quick goals. The first came from Luke Mascall who unleashed a rasping effort from 25 yards past 18-year old debutant Charlie Murphy. Just a few minutes later with the Owls in the ascendancy they took the lead. Brody Robertson drifted in at the back post, completely unmarked and side-footed home an inch perfect Jonathan Oglesby cross sending the traveling Owls fans delirious.

32 THE OWL

Just before the break, Tadcaster should have equalised as Carl Stewart found Tom Corner with a dissecting through ball but Higton came out on top of the one-on-one saving with his feet. It was a quiet start to the second half as neither side could create a decent opening in the early exchanges. Both sides made changes on the hour mark and this seemed to spur the game on. Owls leading scorer Marc Cooper had a shot blocked from a corner from the right to deny the striker, whilst Tadcaster were frustrated as a deflected from Stewart. The Brewer’s did manage to level midway through the second half as Stewart outmuscled Lowe and fired underneath Higton. Nevertheless, the joy on the faces of the Tadcaster fans were short lived as Oglesby collected a long ball from Winn. He shimmed inside and out, beating one defender in the process then bent his right-footed curling effort into the corner of the net giving Murphy no chance sparking scenes of joy on the faces of all those involved with Cleethorpes Town. The Owls dealt with the late pressure from Tadcaster brilliantly and professionally. Late shouts for a penalty were half-hearted from The Brewers and the referee waved away both sets of appeals and blew his whistle moments later to give the Owls their first piece of NCEL Cup silverware.

football in the army reserve

The Army Reserve is the largest of the Reserve Forces, the others being the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR), the Royal Marines Reserve (RMR) and the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR). The Army Reserve provides support to the Regular Army at home and overseas, and throughout its history almost every major operation has seen reservists operate alongside their Regular counterparts. The Army Reserve Soldiers here today come from all walks of life and work part-time as soldiers for the British Army alongside full-time Regular soldiers. The Army Reserve has two clearly defined roles. Firstly, it provides highly trained soldiers who can work alongside the Regulars on missions in the UK and overseas. Secondly, it gives people who have specialist skills, like medics and engineers, a range of exciting opportunities to use them in new ways. Sport is a big part of being in the Army Reserve with football being the largest organised participation sport. One third of Army Reserve units have a football team and these compete in national 11-a-side and 6-aside competitions. The main inter-unit competition is the Challenge Cup which was first competed for in 1923. The current holders are 71 Engr Regt who came through five rounds of completion winning the final against 152 (NI) RLC at the Military Stadium in Aldershot. The teams on show today are taken from the units across the UK. The mens team has been established for many decades and is selected from players that shine in the Challenge Cup mentioned earlier. The women's team is new and in it’s first full season. Both teams plan to play eight matches each year, which includes three during the end of season training camp. The men were lucky enough to go to Cyprus last month for their camp where they played matches against their regular counterparts from the Army and the RAF. The women also enjoyed a challenging development camp but in the UK where they played against Fleet Town and the Regular Army side.

Saturday 14th May 2016 / Garforth Town FC / Attendance: 423 Cleethorpes Town triumphed on Saturday 14th May in the NCEL League Cup Final against Tadcaster Albion in a thrilling game at Garforth. Having never lost against Tadcaster, Cleethorpes were in high spirits going into the game even with Tadcaster wrapping up the league title two week’s previous. The Owls initially went behind when Brewers top scorer Josh Greening put Taddy ahead. However, two quick goals for the Owls put them in control at the break. Taddy leveled midway through the second half but a Jonathan Oglesby goal 17 minutes from time was enough for the to lift the trophy for the first time in their short history.

With the sun beaming down on Garforth and the pitch looking like Wembley both teams stepped out onto the field for the last time this season. NCEL Premier Division Champions Tadcaster fielded a strong side but were missing some of the ex-Football League stars that had helped them in recent weeks. The Owls, who were runners up in the NCEL League Cup Final last year fielded the same line-up for the third game running. The game started with a high tempo with both sides looking to apply themselves early on but it was the Owls who had the first real chance of the game. With three minutes on the clock, Brody Robertson made a superb run in behind the Tadcaster defence. He cross it to Luke
