Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly. In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters. The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff. The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go. The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club.

With confidence high, the Owls went in search of another in the form of Flett but he could only fire over the bar after being set up by Wheeler. The Owls nearly shot themselves in the foot as they pushed forward as Miners captain Andy Hawksworth snuck forward and broke the offside trap but his lofted effort sailed over the bar much to the relief of the Owls backline. With the clock running down, Garforth decided to push forward looking for the equaliser when left gaps at the back for the Owls to exploit. This was evident as Dickens played in Debnam who crossed to Oglesby in a similar move to the goal but Oglesby could only head wide of the mark. Just two minutes later, the Owls where at it again, this time in the form of Mascall and Hanslip as they both tested the keeper within seconds of each other but Hunter stood talk and didn't allow the ball to get past him.

With less than 15 minutes left, the best chance for the Owls to stretch their lead came when Robertson was played through with only the keeper to beat
but he spurned the chance and poked wide of the mark with only Hunter to beat. From the goal kick, the Owls won the ball and retained possession for over two minutes, passing over 40 times in the process in a move similar to Barcelona but the final ball by Robertson could not find Oglesby in an advanced position. Only two minters later and game changed. Mangham beat Dickens to the ball and was through on goal. Dickens had two choices, bring Mangham down and receive a definite red card or let him through and potentially concede a goal and lose out on two points. He chose the former, brought the striker down and headed off for an early shower. The traveling support showed their appreciation towards Dickens in his selfless act. From the awarded free-kick, Robertson struck the ball over the wall and clipped the outside of the post from 25 yards out. Dickens must of wondered what had happened as the noise level increased inside the stadium. With the man advantage, the Miners looked at breaking down the sturdy defence and seemed to have found a way after Mascall was beaten on the near side by Spencer Lund but he could only fire wide after sprinting into the box following his mazy run.

Even with the extra man, the Miners looked vulnerable on the break as substitute Richardson ran 70 yards with the ball, shielded off one opponent, laid it off into the path of Flett who cross to Debnam but he could not find the target with his powerful header. The clock ticked into injury time and the board went up for an additional six minutes of added time. The best chance for the Miners to draw level fell to Lund after Heward missed a long ball from Hunter but as Steer came rushing out and the angle narrowed Lund's right

closed the keeper down looking for a mistake. From the clearance, the ball fell to Mark Simpson where he played in a through ball to Luke Mangham who was just about to pull the trigger but Liam Dickens was on hand to produce a well timed tackle inside the box saving a certain goal. Just four minutes later and the Miners really should of scored. Mangham latched onto a lofted ball from deep and only had Steer to beat. He rounded the keeper but could only find the side netting from a tight angle much to his annoyance.
Cleethorpes Town narrowly beat Garforth Town 1-0 on Saturday thanks to a Jonathan Oglesby strike just after half-time. The Owls made five changes to the starting line-up from their defeat the previous Saturday bringing in Damien Steer, Kirk Wheeler, Darren Hanslip, Jack Debnam and Jonathan Oglesby in replacement of Brad Beattie, Jack Richardson, Jack Barlow, Marc Cooper and Louis Grant. The Owls started the match brightly and fashioned a chance as early as the third minute as Garforth's 6ft 7in man mountain of a keeper was rushed into a hurried clearance as Brody Robertson

the 29th minute as Alex Flett delivered a pinpoint cross which was chested by Robertson in Debnam's path but he could only scuff his shot inches wide. The relenting pressure from the visitors continued as Debnam saw he lobbed effort cleared off the line by Miners substitute Ashley Preece with his first touch of the ball after coming on for injured Jack McCarthy. Just five minutes last and it was deja vu once again but it was Oglesby this time who saw he lofted header cleared off the line as he nodded a Flett diagonal ball goalwards but it was Preece once more who came to the rescue of the Miners.
At the other end, makeshift striker Wheeler nearly had the ball in the back of the net after a great Owls move but Hunter was on hand to stop the shot.
As the clock was running down and halftime approaching the Owls went on ultra-offensive mode and made Hunter work for his place in the Miners side. He produced a marvelous one-handed diving save from a Debnam arrowed strike from 25 yards out that was heading into the top corner but the athleticism of Hunter saved the day. Then Oglesby found time to test the keeper once more before the break but once again the shot stopper was in fine first-half hiding onto the powerful shot well.
With the Owls gaining momentum, they pushed forward in search of the opener and should of got it as Oglesby played in a corner kick from the right hand side but Debnam could only head wide of the mark as he rose above his marker at the far post.
The half-time entertainment was provided by two Santas, one from either club competing in a penalty shootout. Thankfully the Owls Santa came away with the plaudits by winning 3-1 thanks to some quality finishing from the North Pole maestro.
Only 30 seconds later, and the Miners where under the cosh once more as Hanslip clipped the ball into Robertson's path but he could only drag his shot wide of Hunter's post. Further chances fell for the Owls over the next five minute with Debnam, Robertson and Wheeler all wasting good opportunities to open the scoring.
The second half started in complete contrast to how the first half went as Garforth came out the stronger side and in their opinion, should of had a penalty after Mascall appeared to have fouled Tim Robertson inside the box but the referee waved away the strong appeals.
However, Debnam did have the best chance of the game so far for the Owls in

In 2014 most activity centres on one of the most iconic moments of the First World War, the 1914 Christmas Truce football match. Football Remembers kicked off in May 2014 when the partners launched a Football Remembers education pack that was sent to more than 30,000 schools across the UK. It includes resources to help children learn about the Truce and football’s role in recruitment and morale during the First World War. Football Remembers also features legacy projects that ensure young people will continue to learn about WW1 for decades to come. The programme will continue to 2018, highlighting the involvement of footballers and football.

ASSISTANT MANAGER’S NOTES
P O W E L L “The Owl” GOOD afternoon to you and welcome to the Bradley Community Stadium for our NCEL Premier Division clash with Armthorpe Welfare... First of all can I say, I hope you have all had a great Christmas and I wish
you the very best for 2015. Now onto business, last weekend we travelled to Garforth Town and narrowly won 1-0 thanks to a Jonathan Oglesby shot just after t h e break. We were without two of our main strikers on the day and had to make do with what we had. All the lads put a shift in and it showed with us grinding out the

win. We did have the better of the chances looking back at the video but we came away with the three points and that is what counts. I expect todays visitors to be up for the challenge. They are a big physical team who will get at us and will cause us problems, but if we are at our best then Armthorpe will struggle. UP THE OWLS! Matthew Powell Assistant Manager

Dent scored from 40 yards after the Ruddington keeper was caught outside the area. Ruddington equalised just before half-time against the run of play. The second half started the same but Ruddington went 2-1 up from a 25 yard free kick that left Kassie Wallis with no chance. Alyssa Fussey then equalised chipping the keeper from the corner of the 18 yard box. The Owls then took the lead through Gemma Hopkin as she broke clear of the Ruddington back 4 to make it

Gemma Charlton then slotted home to make it 4-2 after a great tackle from Hopkin saw the ball run through for Charlton who slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Ruddington scored a third to make a tense last five minutes but the Ladies where able to hold on and win the game 4-3. The Ladies throughly deserved the win with the work rate, commitment and the football they played.

CLEETHORPES TOWN ‘A’Wa s With Mick Gibbons & Andy Cawte Cleethorpes Town “A” travelled to Holton Le Clay Community Centre to face AFC Holton Le Clay in league action on Saturday 20th December in their last game of 2014. Jack Gibbons made his debut in the Owls goal, with Jam Smith and Tom Wingate centre back, and Harry Crawford and Mark Smith wing backs. Matt Smith played his first game
of the season in front of the back four with Wade Hurst and Tom Furnell operating in the middle and Matty Payne off them with Mikey Milne and Luke Aldrich up front in an 11 mixed with youth and experience. AFC Holton Le Clay started the better side with Cleethorpes not getting to grips with the windy conditions. The back four did well to contain the Holton attack but they broke the deadlock after half an hour when an unlucky deflection fell to a Holton attacker who slotted past Gibbons.

The Owls went in 1-0 down at the break but the second half was a different story with a great performance with Furnell dictating the game whilst Payne looked dangerous. Milne and Aldrich also caused the Holton defence problems. Some quality football down the left through Crawford, Hurst and
CleethorpesTownFC
Page Sponsor Aldrich won the Owls a corner. Aldrich whipped in a great ball, Holton could only clear to the edge of the box where Furnell let fly on the half volley to equalise. Just five minutes later after another brilliant corner from Aldrich just missed the heads of Jamie Smith and Wingate. Payne forced saves from the Holton keeper as they couldn't quite manage to find the winning goal and if not for a point blank save from Gibbons in the closing minutes and a great block from Smith further points would have been snatched away. Once again, lots of positives to take from recent performances now being rewarded with results and going into the New Year still in 3 Cups gives us a lot to play for. Armthorpe Welfare The club was formed in 1926 as part of the Colliery Social Welfare scheme. Throughout its years, it achieved varied but limited success before disbandment in 1974. The lack of senior football in the village was soon recognised, and the club was reformed in 1976 when they registered in the Doncaster Senior League Division Three. It wasn’t long before honours were arriving, starting with the Senior League Championship in 1978/79 season. The following years brought further success by way of the Second Division Championship (1979/80), then the First Division Championship in the 1981/82 season, when they also lifted the West Riding Challenge Cup. Welfare also won the Doncaster Senior League Cup in the 1979/80 season and retained it for the following three seasons.

The following season saw Welfare join the Northern Counties East League in the Northern Second Division. They finished runners-up, which was enough to gain promotion to the Central Division One. Once again, they were promoted at the first time of asking by topping the division in 84/85. It was this year where the goal scoring talents of Martin Johnson; the former Boston FC striker, and Peter Camm saw them score 42 goals between them.
Since the glory days of the early 80’s, Welfare have maintained their place in the Northern Counties East Premier Division since 1985, but has not lifted any silverware in that time. They came close in 2007/08 when they were reached the Presidents Cup Final, but were beaten 4-2 (AET) by Liversedge. The 2009/2010 season was their most successful of recent times, and if not for a late drop in form, could have gained promotion to the Unibond (now Evo-Stik) First Division. They still managed their highest point’s haul (79) to finish third, and reached the fourth round of the FA Vase where Wroxham beat them on penalties in the replay. Welfare also reached the League Cup Final, but finished runner-up to Dinnington Town.

Goole & Thorne District Cup 1982/83. Cardiff City and Rotherham professional Leo Fortune-West, who contributed 7 goals in 13 appearances last season in his first season. Fortune-West made 29 appearances last season, but he gradually took more of a back seat, assisting manager Des Bennett on the coaching side. Then at the end of 2011/12 season Bennett announced he was to resign after 24 years at the club. Citing a desire to spend more time with his family, and on work commitments, his 13 years as manager came to an end. He left the club having maintained their status in the NCEL Premier League throughout his tenure, and last season guided the team to a 1st qualifying round replay in the FA Cup, and the third round of the FA Vase.
manager. They certainly have a challenge on their hands after a number of players left the club, and it was a challenge that proved too great. The squad failed to gel together, and there were multiple personnel changes throughout the season. A major change occurred half way through the campaign when assistant manager Gary Paton resigned, but there was no time to dwell on the situation as the games were coming thick and fast. Brian Johnston was appointed assistant, and with him he brought a host of new faces. Despite the quality of some players showing through, there was still inconsistency in team selection and tactics, and Fortune-West was struggling to get his team playing as a team.
Welfare moved swiftly, and it seemed a natural transition to appoint Fortune-West as manager, with Gary Paton joining him as assistant
The threat of relegation became very real, and Fortune-West tendered his resignation with five games left to play. Johnston stepped up to the plate

and it came down to the final day of the season. Welfare required a win to be sure of safety, and despite going 1-0 down, Welfare battled back to win 2-1 and secure Premier Division status and maintain the clubs record of never being relegated in their history. The 2013/14 season starts with much more optimism. Johnston was given the manager’s job permanently, and he has worked hard to retain the core nucleus of last year’s squad, while adding to it with some quality new players. David Poppleton has been appointed assistant manager and he is very knowledgeable and extremely enthusiastic. The ground at Church Street has a capacity of 2,500, and it held close to that in 1986 when facing Doncaster Rovers in a charity match.

“I hope we get a few more promotions as I’d really like to further my career with the Owls...”
Marc, we are doing well in the league, did brilliantly in the FA Cup and the FA Vase, give us your thoughts on the season so far. The season is going well at the minute, we’re picking some good points up, but we do need to keep it going. You have played in most of the matches so far this season, what would you say has been your toughest game? The toughest game so far has to be when we played against Worksop Town. They kept the ball really well. Which one of your 20 goals so far this season was you most pleased about scoring? It wasn’t the best goal but probably when we played Thackley away. It was late on and we won 1-0. Playing with some of the best players in the county must be great, but tell me who you think has been the best this season and why? I’d go for Alex Flett, he has been class so far this season.
Haha, he’s a bit better at it but it’s been said a lot to be fair! Do you think anyone will challenge you for the golden boot this season? There’s goals all over the squad. I think if Louis Grant ever gets off 11 goals then he may be a threat. You are now 1st in the order of most appearances for the Owls, having played over 100 times, how does this make you feel? Im happy to play over 100 times, hopefully I’ll be around to make a lot more! You come across as a very laid back individual, but we really want to know is, what really annoys you?! Bad drivers and Jack Richardson’s whistling! Your only 26 and still have a long career ahead of you, what are your realistic expectations going forward? Hopefully we will get a few more promotions, but you never know what’s going to happen in the future.
Lastly, where do you think the Owls will People have compared your style of play finish in the table? to Dimitar Berbatov, do you think this is Top 5. an accurate? Interview by Craig Kendall
