This Week in the Prep School Year 5—Stargazers To celebrate the end of their ‘Stargazers’ topic, Year 5 girls have used their creativity and imaginative skills to make their very own space rocket, lunar module or moon buggy. Is this the next generation of woman space engineers?
Year 5—Figurative Language Year 5 have been experimenting with a range of figurative language and this week they have composed free verse poems about space. Here is one that we wrote together, each pair volunteering a line. Staring into a Midnight World by 5MK Free-falling through space The black sky is a fluffy, blanket covering me Ten thousand galaxies in darkening space Stars like fairy lights Twinkling and winking cheekily at me, in joyous delight Meteors whizzing around speedily like giant meatballs Picture-perfect planets glisten in the corner of my eye Saturn dashing around the sun like a lightning bolt The moon a glistening glitter ball hanging silently in space Whoosh! The world that we knew was gone in the blink of an eye.
This Week in the Prep School Year 1—Christingles This week in Year 1, the girls have really enjoyed rounding off our Advent topic in RE by making their very own Christingles. The girls worked so hard to learn the different meaning for each component within the Christingle and carefully assemble them. They weren't best pleased when I explained that the sweets were not for eating! Once assembled, we began to feel very festive!
Cards for Cherry Trees Care Homes In school this week, the girls have enjoyed putting love and care into cards for the children of Cherry Trees and residents of local care homes. These cards reminded our girls of the joy of spreading happiness to others.
Upper Prep Carols Upper Prep Carols by Candlelight reminded us of the true meaning of Christmas. The girls sang and read beautifully. Well done and thank you to everyone involved.
Lower Prep Nativity Lower Prep delighted the whole school with their Nativity performance on Thursday morning. The singing was beautiful and the performances were brilliant from all the girls.
This Week in the Prep School Year 2 Computing This half term, the girls in Year 2 have worked hard to write code for a grid dance, debugging as they went. This week, we tested out the codes as a whole class. It was lots of fun as well as a learning experience!
Science Experiment The Year 6 classes have been looking at the problem of plastic usage and have been looking at the matra reuse reduce and recycle. Here is a way for making plastic at home so please feel free to have a go.
Year 5 Year 5 made some beautiful stained glass windows depicting scenes from the Nativity story.
This Week in the Prep School We had a very special visitor to the Prep School today!! Thank you to FOST for all the gifts that he brought the girls (which have been quarantined for 72 hours).
Music News Musicians of the Week Mrs Yalden would like to congratulate all the girls who took part in the Nativity Play and Carol Service this week. They really did produce some wonderful singing for both events and she is really proud of the work they have put in this term to achieve this.
Music Activities Next Term All activities will remain as they have been this term. We hope to be able to add a few more and make some adjustments during the course of the Spring Term. Year 6 Music Theory – please note there will be NO music theory on the first day of next term.
Girls learning Instruments A gentle reminder to girls to keep playing instruments over the holidays, especially those girls who have exam recordings to make at the beginning of next term. Learning to play Christmas carols on your instrument is a great way to keep playing at this time of year.
Sports News •
Merry Christmas everyone from the Prep PE Department. Keep active and safe.
Pupils’ news Sofie (Year 5) had a very successful day at the NSEA championships at the weekend despite the cold weather! Sofie’s team came 4th and there were some very excited horses! The horses haven't been out for a month but due to lockdown are incredibly fit! Well done! Evangelina (Year 5) has been nominated for a 2020 Junior Tennis Award for players aged 10 years and under who have established themselves as a good role model to other younger juniors through coaching and competition experience. Evangelina will find out the results just before Christmas– fingers crossed!
Inspirational sports person of the week by Tabby H Lee Childs is an English tennis player who has now retired and is the Head of Queens tennis club. Lee has played Global competitions and at the one and only Wimbledon! He famously defeated Nikolay Davydnko in the 2003 Wimbledon Championship. He also has played Rafael Nadal. One of his quotes is: “Don’t practise for the sake of practising. Practise with a purpose. Every time you go on court you should always be trying to improve a particular aspect of your game which could be tactical, technical or physical”
The Year 3 Splash and Dash results are in…. It was a very foggy dash for the girls on Monday but they all did it with smiles on their faces. Well done to everyone in Year 3! St Ignatius were the winning team with Pascale, Isabella, Sophia, Emilia and Séarlait.
Santa Run 2020 What a great week we have had completing all the Santa Runs. The girls especially enjoyed the hot chocolate and gingerbread man at the end—special thanks to our catering team for providing this!

One team - Antonia, Inde and Sofie - came 4th, the second team - Antonia, Chloe and Lottie - came 5th. Antonia placed 1st individually. In the 70cm class, we also had two teams entered. The Green team - Antonia, Inde and Lulu came 7th overall, while the Pink team - Chloe, Lottie, Mia and Sofie - placed 4th. Congratulations everyone for such a brilliant result!
**Christmas Fair Round up** 2020 has been an interesting year to say the least…so coming together as a community during the Christmas Fair Week was perhaps more important than ever… We set out to hold an event that would create some Christmas fun for the school and support our local small businesses through the online marketplace (still open at www.sttsfair.co.uk until end December), but what we didn’t expect was that we’d make more money this year than we did in 2018 or 2019! The community spirit is alive and well in the Effingham Trust!
We’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to all the parents for your support, both by visiting the site and for getting on board with the plethora of activities on offer. We hoped the ‘bake off’ competition would go down well in the Prep School but we were overwhelmed by the number of entries we received, from Reception to the 6 th Form and from Cranmore boys and girls too!
A huge THANK YOU as well to the staff who helped FOST with printing, spreading the word and getting prizes to winners. And a special shout out to the Prep School Staff who really made the Advent Calendar activities come to life for the children. Along with local businesses we also hosted two local charities on our site, The Grange and Cherry Trees. We had some great feedback from The Grange that we would like to share with you. The Grange is a centre in Bookham that supports people with learning difficulties to lead independent and fulfilling lives. They make chutneys, jams, embroidered items, artwork, and much more at their centre, which they sell at a dedicated shop in Bookham. The Grange told us they have received a huge number of online orders and are sold out of certain items during our fair! They said that residents have really enjoyed taking online orders and are learning new skills in the process. They are feeling very valued and less pressurised completing these than when dealing with customers face to face. THANK YOU for supporting them. **CHRISTMAS MARKET THIS WEEKEND ** Cherry Trees have a Christmas market happening this weekend 12th December. You can book your ticket here https://www.cherrytrees.org.uk/event/cherry-trees-christmas-market What’s next? What’s next for FOST in 2021…We’ve raised a fantastic amount of money towards our 2nd hand uniform cabin but we’re still some work to do to make it a reality…We’d love to hear your ideas so please do get in touch and get involved – we’re always recruiting new members! Fostst2020@gmail.com On behalf of everyone at FOST have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Menu—w/c Tuesday 5th January Hot lunches include a selection of family favourites and suitable alternatives for children with allergies and intolerances. The girls will still need to bring a healthy snack/s into school for break time/s.
