7 OCTOBER 2024

Message from the Head of Prep

On Monday, we played host to Parkside School for a closely contested swimming gala. Well done to all those involved and thank you to those who came along to support. On Tuesday, we were treated to an amazing assembly and workshop about African drumming. The children loved being able to get involved and try some drumming for themselves.

Thank you to everyone who donated so generously to our annual Harvest appeal. The children looked delighted to be giving to those in need and those contributions will all go to a good cause. Another great way that the children can offer their support to those less fortunate is through our Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Although it might seem too soon to be thinking of Christmas, the deadline for shoeboxes to be brought to school is quickly rolling around. Please refer to Mr Jakubowski’s letter for more details.

Nursery and Reception had a lot of fun in their dance lessons this week, getting to enjoy, amongst other things, musical statues to some of the hits from the Frozen soundtrack. Also having an exciting time, Year 1 took a trip to Legoland where they took part in a tailored workshop and designed and created their own sea creature out of Lego.

School Council elections continue to take place in the Upper Prep and the elected representatives will be gathering soon to share their ideas. As I write this, Year 6 are busy tackling the challenges of an outdoor adventure centre and we all look forward to learning more about this trip on their return. Finally, we wish all those taking part in this weekend’s Henkes Shield the very best of luck.

African Drumming Workshops

We had an exciting start to the week with African Drumming workshops for pupils in Lower Prep and Year 6. The pupils loved hearing and refining the rhythms demonstrated by the workshop leader, Moussa. His spirt and energy throughout the whole day was palpable, and all the pupils benefitted from being immersed and experiencing different cultures and traditions. This was part of our Black History Month celebrations which are

Year 2’s Castles and Catapults

The Year 2 pupils have designed, constructed and painted their own castles this week. They have learnt about forces and experimented with making a catapult to force a small polystyrene ball to move through the air. They worked well together to try and solve problems and come up with solutions and ideas.

Year 1 Forest School Trip

Last Friday the 20th of September, all the Year 6 students had the pleasure of enjoying an informative STEM talk (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) on engineering.

The pupils in Year 1 had a wonderful time at Forest School last Thursday. They found some conkers and used their creativity to transform them into delightful caterpillar figurines. The children collaborated to mix and prepare a cement-like substance, and as a special treat, they were able to enjoy a freshly cooked crumpet over an open fire, accompanied by a warm and comforting hot chocolate.

The talk was presented by Mr.Derrick Budd who is a licenced aircraft engineer and has many years’ experience in his field. He spoke about what a career in engineering looks like and how he and his team of engineers rely on a wide range of skills and talents which apply science, mathematics and a host of other topics to solve problems in the aviation industry.

Our students watched a video to show the steps involved in the removal of an engine and installation of a new engine into a Boeing 787 aircraft. Mr.Budd explained the laws of physics of flight, which is based on Newton's three laws of motion and

Then, the students got the opportunity to make a paper aeroplane with their Maths teachers. They competed against their Form groups, to fly and land their plane with great accuracy. Mr.Budd enjoyed listening to the wonderful student questions

Reception Trip to Manor House

Henkes Shield, Saturday 12th October

The Henkes Shield is an annual football competition between Cranmore and Rokeby school, involving age groups U9s to U13s. Established in 1983, this will be the 39th year the event has taken place with 2 years being cancelled due to poor weather and Covid. Cranmore has won the competition 20 times, to Rokeby's 18. 8 matches will take place throughout tomorrow morning with one point being awarded for each win, 0.5 for a draw. Cranmore need to achieve 4.5 points to retain the prestigious shield.

Biathlon

Pupils from Year 5 to Year 9 took part in a qualifying event for the Schools National Biathlon. The event involved swimming and running set distances for their age groups. The boys competed incredibly well in their individual events and we will look forward to the results and qualification for the National Finals taking place in Bath.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

Bible Reading

The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Mark 4

Reflection

Sometimes as we journey and move through life we can face storms. These can often take us by surprise. Life can be unpredictable. The Disciples recognise Jesus as Teacher, but after this miracle as more than a Teacher. We too may think we know Jesus. But we must continue to grow in our knowledge of the one who can calm the storms.

Lord, bring peace and calm to the storms I am facing or may face in the future.

Remind us all that you are with us and that you control the waters.

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“May today there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.” St Teresa of Lisieux
