St Teresa Prep Weekly Bulletin 27 September 2024

27th September 2024

Dear Parents,

As part of our year you will be aware that our school value focus is Community. My Monday assemblies for this half term are focused around this through looking at what it means to be Community through St. Paul’s teaching on love from 1 Corinthians 13: 4 – 7. So far we have noted that love is kind (useful, serving and gracious), love is patient (long-tempered) and love does not envy (I want what you have AND I don’t want you to have it).

We have very much focused on the fact that this sort of love in relationship in community is a CHOICE. We have to choose to respond and behave in these ways with one another. We have delightful girls in this school AND we can all still choose to love in better ways. I encourage you to discuss these ways of loving further at home and even identify with each other when you see each other choosing to react and love in these ways.

Because, in the words of Joe and Jennifer:

Love lift us up where we belong

Where the eagles cry on a mountain high Love lift us up where we belong

Far from the world below, up where the clear winds blow

Have a LOVEly weekend,

Golden Book

Well done to all of the girls in our Golden Books this week:

4 KC Molly for a fabulous piece of written work on a stormy sea including spectacular fronted adverbials as well as adjectives and onomatopoeia.

Hollie for fabulous cursive handwriting in all her written work, for describing what a summary is to the class and for writing full sentences in her comprehension work.

4 LH Ava B and Vivienne W about their yes/no questions, which enabled them to move smoothly through their branching database.

5 AB Sophia D for her wonderfully detailed and interesting character description.

Thea B-H for her clear and well

Harper A-S for her super focus and independence during writing activities.

5 KH Ava-Skye for her fabulous description of a character from a myth, which employed imaginative and powerful vocabulary.

Thea S for her thoughtful topic work on The Shang Dynasty, particularly her detailed questions created for her oracle bone.

6 SG Eva J for having a brilliant and happy week at school.

Mira M for her consistently beautiful manners.

Darcy R for her wonderful setting descriptions in English.

6 MK Penny C and Sophie B for their excellent work in RE this week, particularly with their creative Roadmaps to Redemption showing how Jesus was sent to redeem our sins.

Sabina M for working with great focus and determination across the curriculum always giving 100% in all that she does.

Art Stars

Year 4 Ava B for creating a vibrantly colourful ink background which demonstrated careful control and thoughtful use of salt and tissues to create marks.

Year 5

Matilda W for her beautifully made sensory drawing, which she chose to call "Night Sky". She incorporated a range of punched holes and marks to create a thoughtful pattern.

Year 6 Eva C, for her positive start to constructing a sculpture of a polar bear using newspaper. She achieved a solid structure and definable features in a short amount of time.

Drama Stars

Year 4 Maddie J for participating with great confidence and showing excellent understanding of characterisation.

Year 5 Sophia D for showing kindness to others and warmly welcoming a new member to her group work task.

Year 6

Matilda G for contributing enthusiastically and expressing her ideas with confidence.

Changes to key dates for 2025

We have updated the key dates sheet to reflect the correct dates for 2025. We apologize for any confusion caused by the previous errors. Thank you for your understanding.

PondVisit

On Monday, Year 6 took a trip to the school Biodiversity area and investigated all sorts of creatures and their habitats.

Year 4 Science

This week in Science, Year 4 created branching databases to classify the various 'species' of Haribo. We can now apply this learning to classify various vertebrates and invertebrates.

Art Club

Year 5 and 6 have been busy in Art Club producing creative flowers using a wonderful array of painted papers. They have learned paper folding techniques to make the petals stand up, and also ways to attach the different elements. Do look out for their display along the top corridor soon!

Mr Tindall’s Wing Walk

Due to unfortunate weather conditions, Mr. Tindall’s Wing Walk scheduled for Sunday, 22nd September, where he was set to take to the skies strapped to the upper wing of a bi-plane to raise funds for Morgan’s Mission and NesT, has been cancelled. Hopefully, a new date will be set soon.

https://nstrust.co.uk/

Morgan is the 15-year-old son of one of my best friends. He was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, a life-threatening condition, aged just 15 months. As you may know, the condition affects the kidneys’ functioning and, combined with extreme allergic reactions giving Morgan excruciating eczema, has made most moments in his young life exceedingly painful to go through, without including the time out of school for constant medical procedures and hospitalisation.

Paul, myself and a group of other supporters are taking to the skies, strapped to planes, less life-threatening than Morgan’s condition, all to raise money for research into Nephrotic Syndrome (NesT).

If you feel led to donate, please do follow the link here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/gareth-tindall-1723843817839? utm_medium=fundraising&utm_content=page%2Fgareth-tindall1723843817839&utm_source=email&utm_campaign=pfp-email

Otherwise, please can I ask that you remember Paul and his family in your prayers.

With much appreciation

Gareth Tindall

National Poetry Day 2024

On Wednesday 25th September Year 6 had the pleasure of being involved in a Senior School workshop arranged in honour of World Poetry Day. Our Senior colleagues organised for renowned poet Karl Nova to perform some of his poems in a workshop with the girls and invited Year 6 to take an entire session for themselves!

The girls enjoyed traversing over to Mairlot Hall where they were fully engaged and entertained by Karl. We look forward to further collaborations with the Senior School, the next being a Quiz with Mr Breeze and Year 7 on the 17th October.

Sports News

Football

Well done to all of Year 5 who played in some closely contested football matches against St George's. The girls demonstrated great dribbling, which they have been recently practising in their PE lessons. It was great to see all the girls showing off their skills and enjoying their first football match of the year! Well done to Beatrice, Liberty, Anna and Daisy who were awarded the player of the match by St George's.

Hockey

The U11s all had their first hockey fixture of the year on Tuesday against Feltonfleet. Every member of the year group played which was excellent to see. Lots of what had been worked on during their training sessions was put into practice. Unfortunately, despite St Teresa’s giving it their all and working their socks off we were not able to come away with the win. The U11s will be playing again in November which gives the team time to train and prepare further

Pupil News

Well done to Florence, Isabell and Viv in Year 4, who competed in a Little Tough Mudder over the weekend!

If your daughter has completed any sporting achievements outside of school, we would love to hear about them. Please email Mrs Hitchman with a short description and photo to a.hitchman@st-teresas.com.

Music News

Musicians of the Week

Year 4 Sara W for such a wonderful enthusiastic start to her music learning – keep it up, Sara! Year 5 Beatrice SG for a brilliant start to Chamber Choir – well done, Bea, we’re so pleased to have you! Year 6 Sabina M for amazing focus and enthusiasm in Music. Great work, Sabina!

Year 4

Year 4 have enthusiastically embraced their first few lessons with the Toot, a fantastic stepping stone between the recorder and the flute. The Toot offers an excellent introduction to flute playing, featuring a specially designed interchangeable mouthpiece that can be easily clicked on and off. This allows the girls to transition smoothly from the familiar recorder playing style to mastering the flute’s lip plate. It’s been wonderful to see the girls engage with this new instrument, and they’ve already made great progress. Well done, Year 4! Keep up the excellent work!

Thursday – String Group We like to encourage the girls to be independent when remembering their one-to-one music lessons and would appreciate your help in reminding them to look at the noticeboard for their timetables. This Week

Bible Reading

The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Mark 4

Reflection

Sometimes as we journey and move through life we can face storms. These can often take us by surprise. Life can be unpredictable. The Disciples recognise Jesus as Teacher, but after this miracle as more than a Teacher. We too may think we know Jesus. But we must continue to grow in our knowledge of the one who can calm the storms.

Prayer

Lord, bring peace and calm to the storms I am facing or may face in the future. Remind us all that you are with us and that you control the waters. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“May today there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.”

St Teresa of Lisieux

We hope that you have had a good week and stayed out of the rain! A reminder to bring appropriate layers for the weather as it has been chopping and changing this past month as we only have a limited number of waterproofs to borrow. Please remember that no hoods or jewellery are to be worn when riding or around the horses.

If you are in the Prep school and want to learn more about the care of horses, then we have spaces on our Stable Management clubs on Friday and Saturdays. Please enquire at the office or by email for more information.
