Summer Term

27th May 2022

Message from Mrs Conrad It has been a real joy to end this half term with a special day commemorating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The girls and staff looked very festive donned in their red, white and blue! The day began with a special service in the Sports Hall for the whole school where we listened to the scripture passage that would have been used at the coronation, said prayers for the Queen and the world and listened to a beautiful combined performance from the Prep Chamber Choir and Senior School Schola Cantorum of a beautiful anthem composed to some words that the Queen herself had written. Our street party at lunchtime was a wonderful occasion: FOST decorated the tables beautifully, the Maintenance Team hung our homemade bunting up and down Baker Street and Gary’s team supplied a delicious BBQ complete with ice cream cones for dessert. It was certainly an occasion that everyone will remember for years to come! It seems apt to end with the words of Cardinal Vincent Nichols, “Today we truly rejoice in Her Majesty, our Queen Elizabeth. We thank God for her shining, platinum, witness of service, full of faith and dignity. We offer our prayers to God for her and her family. May God bless you, Your Majesty.”

Golden Book Well done to all of the girls in our Golden Books this week:

2EB

Mariella D and Esther H for producing informative, colourful posters highlighting some of the similarities and differences between the UK and Australia.

3RN

Ruby S for excellent group work this week to produce an informative poster on all Ruby knew about volcanoes. She included the features, different types of eruptions and some ‘did you know?’ facts. Isabella M-S worked very well in a small group to research volcanoes and create an informative poster, including facts and diagrams. Olivia G for excellent setting description of Pompeii in our English lessons this week. Olivia used fantastic sentence starters and adjectives to describe life before Mount Vesuvius erupted.

3KC

Apollonia C-D for brilliant reading this week and for finding super adjectives and verbs in her reading. Zara O’D for an amazing diary entry about the eruption of Vesuvius. Well done for including fronted adverbials, onomatopoeia, and powerful adjectives.

5MK

Steffi C-B for super use of her creative skills to design an impressive Jubilee flag for our Jubilee celebrations. Tabby D and Natalia O for wonderful work in poetry this week, using figurative language to good effect, including metaphors and personification.

5HC

Emma v E and India R C for their superb written descriptions of a garden, their writing was exciting, vivid, full of figurative language and excellent vocabulary choices. Olivia K and Saskia H for their fantastic progress in English, especially with their written work. Listening to feedback, taking their time to include all elements of the success criteria, and editing their work successfully has seen them both produce some excellent pieces of work recently. Well done!

6KH

Beth B for her commitment to her Head Girl role; always leading by example and writing an excellent proposal for a charity initiative. Zara B for an original and entertaining speech on being the younger sister, which she delivered with clarity and confidence.

6JG

Lily E and Emily K for their impressive speeches in English.

6LD

Lily S for writing an excellent speech on the Wonders of Snakes. Isabella M for writing an excellent speech on Climate Change.

Young Voices Our Years 5 & 6 Young Voices Choir sung with joy and enthusiasm at the O2 this week. It was an amazing experience for the girls to perform with professional musicians at such a prestigious arena as part of a massed choir of 8,000. By the end of the evening, girls, parents and staff were all on their feet singing and dancing!

Year 2—English After learning about possessive apostrophes, the girls used their new knowledge to label their learning partner. Noses, cheeks, jumpers and arms were some of the items labelled!

Poetry & Literature Club The girls in Poetry and Literature Club chose an author they would like to research and produced an interesting and eye-catching profile.

Eco & Gardening Club In Eco and Gardening Club this week, Mrs Menzies from the Senior School invited the girls to plant some wild seed in the school ground. The girls loved preparing the ground using rakes, planting the seeds and raking the seeds afterwards. Fingers crossed for a little rain to help the seeds germinate.

Year 5—Chefs Adopt a School In Session 3 of "Chefs Adopt a School” Year 5 made bread dough and took it home to bake. They chose what shapes, sizes and flavours they wanted for their final product. We were impressed with their results, from plaited loaves, dinner rolls, dough balls with garlic butter to sweet, tasty cinnamon swirls! The girls all agreed that the bread tasted delicious.

Year 3—Volcanoes This week, the girls used the VR headsets to find out more about volcanoes for our topic ‘Tremors’. It was a long awaited lesson and a fantastic way to end the topic. The girls saw lava flowing, went on a virtual helicopter ride and imagined what a sulphurous volcano would smell like in Indonesia! What an adventure.

The girls in 3KC caught up with their volcano poem work after their amazing assembly and I think you'll agree they included some amazing vocabulary with language devices such as powerful adjectives and verbs, similes, onomatopoeia, alliteration plus many more. Afterwards they wrote their poems up inside a volcano to create a volcano calligram. Fabulous work girls!

The U10 team was victorious, winning against Wimbledon, Hawthorn’s and St George’s. Players of the tournament were Peyton, Liliana, Lyla and Olivia P. Well done girls!

This Week On Thursday, we celebrated the great Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, remembering, forty days after the Resurrection, when Jesus returned to glory to sit at the right hand of His Father. As we celebrated Mass together, joined by the parish community, we reflected on two elements of this event. It was a joy to join together as a whole school community this morning, as part of our Jubilee celebrations, for a Service of Prayer and Thanksgiving to mark the 70th Anniversary of the reign of our monarch, Queen Elizabeth. We reflected on King Solomon’s desire for gift of wisdom, and recalled that the Queen, in her Similarly, we, like the first followers of Jesus, turn, asked for the same. This has resulted in now wait in anticipation for the feast of her reign being one characterised by a life of Pentecost when we, the body of Christ, are service. While it is remarkable that she has inspired and called to continue Christ’s reigned for seventy years, her exemplary life of ministry of love to our world. service is surely a still greater legacy. As we gathered together we joined our voice to that of Cardinal Vincent Nichols as we declared: On the one hand we recalled that Jesus has gone before us to prepare that heavenly place for us. Having humbled himself to come down and participate so fully in our humanity, so now he has returned and opened the way to the eternal kingdom of heaven for us.

“Your Majesty, it is an honour and a pleasure to express the great loyalty and gratitude felt by the Catholic community of England and Wales for the outstanding and unstinting service you give to our nation and to people throughout the world”
