Champions at the ESSKIA National Finals

Afternoon tea with Onjali Raúf at The Savoy

11th October 2019 Dear Parents As ever, this edition has some sports news. In particular, you can read a comprehensive report on our outstanding success at the ESSKIA National Finals. Yesterday, we celebrated our traditional Harvest Mass and I am grateful to all those who contributed foods for those in need. A particular highlight this week was our special Junior Assembly for Grandparents followed by afternoon tea and a visit to the classrooms. We were delighted that so many grandparents were able to join us from near and far. On a more personal note, Monday was rather significant too as I had a “special birthday”. I was truly touched by the wonderful Junior Assembly in which the children sang for me and presented me with cards, balloons and even a magnificent chocolate cake! I am sure Year 7 will have a marvellous weekend as they head off for their residential visit. Yours sincerely, Michael Connolly

Senior News Afternoon tea at the Savoy with Onjali Raúf

Following author Onjali Raúf’s visit to Cranmore in June, we launched a competition to win afternoon tea at the Savoy with her. The challenge was to write a letter to the Queen, similar to the letter Ahmet writes in Onjali’s book, ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’. Four budding authors won the competition and were treated to a sumptuous afternoon tea on Sunday 6th October. They were thrilled to spend time talking with Onjali as well as sampling the delicious fare on offer!

Sports News Skiing success at the Nationals Our Ski Squad made the Cranmore community very proud last weekend at The ESSKIA Nationals in Norwich. The U14s skied honourably in the competition and, having qualified two weeks ago in Southampton, deserved their place in the Finals. Our U12 team competed exceptionally well and became eventual winners in their age category. The team (G. Messinger, T. Williams, B. Goldsmith and D. Downing) clocked fantastic times, resulting in the combination of the three quickest times to be enough for the overall win. Huge congratulations to our Ski Squad and a big thank you to all the supporting families. Netball and Hockey Our U8 netball teams played against Hoe Bridge on Tuesday and Bishopsgate on Friday, and our U9 hockey teams played against St George's in two entertaining matches. Football Football fixtures have taken place across the school against Milbourne Lodge, KCJS, and Cranleigh Prep (see SOCS for results). The school also featured at the Feltonfleet U11 and U9 Downsend football tournaments. Also on Saturday, our 1st XI progressed through to the last 16 of the Surrey Cup, beating Cumnor House 5-4 after extra time. This week, we have had our first swimming gala and cross-country event of the term, plus another golf match. Updates regarding these events will be in next week’s report.
