13th December 2019 Dear Parents We have come to the end of another busy and productive term. It is quite remarkable how much all the children have achieved in the last few months. Not only have there been many significant academic highlights, but there have also been many outstanding moments within Sport, Music, Drama and, indeed, many others aspects of school life. I am most grateful to all the staff who have worked so hard to give the children such an enriching educational experience. As ever, we enjoyed a magnificent Carol Service last night which was a powerful reminder of how we might reflect on the true meaning of the Christmas message. I wish you and your family a most relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Yours sincerely,

Michael Connolly

Junior News Year 3 Viking Day On Monday, a strong northerly wind blew some longships much further south than usual, which brought a brave, fearsome group of Vikings to the gates of Cranmore. The Vikings invaded the whole of Year 3 and spent the day solving quizzes and playing games from their culture. They also recounted some of their historic conquests and achievements and practised their bloodcurdling battle charge in the playground, striking fear into the heart of many a teacher. They compared different types of armour and discussed which weapons would be best for hunting or fighting. The day ended, as do most Viking days, with some exciting spear wrestling and a thrilling saga. When the Vikings left, they took with them the spoils of the day, a replica Viking coin to treasure. Sports News Sports Report The last week of term has seen our U13 and U12 rugby teams notch up wins against Sevenoaks, all the Year 4 boys (U9s) play superbly against Northcote Lodge, and an U11 side perform admirably at the Danes Hill festival (see reports and results on the sports portal, via the Cranmore website). House rugby has also been taking place across the whole school as well as various house challenges and competitions within netball and hockey lessons. Members of the squash squad played against Lanesborough across the U10, U11 and U13 age groups. All three age categories were won by Cranmore with some great squash taking place. Well done to all involved! With the term coming to the end, it seems fitting to reflect on a superb period of sport at the school. Highlights have included: playing over 200 matches and regaining the Henkes shield in the football season; the U8 netball team winning the team of the tournament at Cranleigh; squash squads remaining unbeaten in fixtures against other schools; being Surrey Champions and ESSKIA National Skiing Champions at U11 level; the rugby season starting very strong; and, finally, the recent news that the school has been nominated in the ‘Top 50 Prep School Schools for Cricket’ for the second year in a row (The Cricketer Magazine). Regarding cricket, it has been great to see so many children attending the winter cricket nets on Monday and Tuesday lunchtimes and, in addition, the winter golf training on Thursday for any keen golfers. This will continue in the Easter Term. On Sunday 5th January, over 100 children and families will attend the Guildford Flames ice hockey match at the Guildford Spectrum. Please make sure you collect your tickets today if you haven't done so already. We really hope you have an enjoyable experience. Watch out for our next sporting opportunity, hopefully a Harlequins rugby match! I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all the sports staff and specialist coaches for their ever constant enthusiasm and commitment to delivering sport at Cranmore. On behalf of the Sports Department, we wish you all a Happy Christmas and New year! Mr Hodgson

Sports News Cranmore Pupil Breaks British Indoor Rowing Records Year 7 pupil Igor, rowing in the U12 category, set two new British indoor rowing championship records. The first record was for the time he took to cover a distance of 500m. He covered it in 1 minute 45.8 seconds. The second record was the distance covered in two minutes, during which Igor rowed 567m, beating the previous record by 2m. The event was held at the 2012 Olympic Velodrome on Saturday 7th December. Congratulations, Igor!

Update about Former Pupil Will B’s Race in Lisbon Will came 22nd out of 115 competitors in the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon. It was a particularly hard, hilly course - the old timers said it was the hardest they had ever experienced! Will is now determined to try and win the race over the next couple of years. Will’s age group also won GB Team Gold!

Music News The Junior Chamber Choir sang wonderfully at the Cherry Trees Carol Service on Sunday. Congratulations to the choir and especially to the soloists, readers, and prayer readers.

A selection of year 7 and 8 Chamber Choir pupils sang beautiful carols at Hatchlands Park on Saturday. Well done!

Music News Many congratulations to Year 8 pupil, B. Jose, who not only passed his Grade 5 Theory of Music with Distinction, but has also now been awarded a place in the National Children’s Orchestra, playing his French horn.

These two pupils gave a beautiful rendition of Silent Night on their recorders in Assembly on Monday.

Notices CRANMORE SECOND HAND UNIFORM SHOP We only have current uniform in stock now thanks to extra hours of volunteering from our team this term. The layout has changed slightly and the girls’ uniform has a more prominent place to reflect the volume. We have taken the opportunity to look at the purpose and administration of the shop. Its primary purpose is to raise funds for the CPA for the benefit of our children. These funds are the ‘extras’ that make the school day a little different. I am sure you will recall that last year the CPA purchased a variety of different equipment, from virtual reality headsets to playground equipment, which are enjoyed by our children on a daily basis. The other purposes of the shop are to help parents to purchase good quality second hand uniform, to help parents recoup some of the costs of uniform and, at the same time, do our bit for the environment. If you have used, are using or may use the shop in the future, please could you take a moment to read about the changes which have been implemented. The shop is continually in need of new stock and we are very grateful for your items, as long as they are in good, clean condition and are current approved uniform. We reserve the right to dispose of items which are unfit for sale or no longer current, as well as items which remain unsold for two years. Parents can choose to fully donate items, which will be sold in aid of the CPA funds. Parents can label items for sale and receive 60% of the sale price back with the remaining 40% going to CPA funds. Parents will be contacted regarding successful sales and payment will be available for collection from the Second Hand Shop, usually on a termly basis. Due to administration costs, there is a minimum of a £5 sale price so not all items can be labelled in this way. Any qualifying items for sale need to be pre-labelled with your name, email address, mobile number, item description (including size) and are to be secured with a safety pin (no sewing pins please). Please do not include a price. A full list of the items that can and cannot be labelled, along with their sale price for your information, will be available shortly on the school website under the CPA section. A template for the labels can also be found on the website. While we are accepting almost all items, we are well-stocked and so not taking any trousers, shorts, school jumpers or maroon jogging bottoms at the moment. We are in need of winter/cold weather uniform as it has been in high demand over the last few weeks! If you have any other questions about the Second Hand Shop or would like to volunteer on a regular or adhoc basis, please contact Suzanne Hoddinott on cranmoresecondhandshop@gmail.com. Thank you very much for all your donations on behalf of the shop team and the CPA.

Suzanne, Carol, Victoria, Katherine and Kristina
