Victory at the Annual Henkes Shield 15th November 2019 Dear Parents, This is another bumper edition with lots of news on sport. In particular, I was delighted to see our footballers win the Henkes Shield last Saturday. However, I was especially pleased by the good sportsmanship demonstrated by all the teams from both schools. Later that evening, we enjoyed a truly magnificent Fireworks Display courtesy of the CPA. As ever, the glow toys proved to be very popular too. On Monday we had a special Senior Department assembly to mark Remembrance Day. I was most grateful to our Year 8 pupils, who gave a powerful presentation to explain its history and continuing significance. Yours sincerely, Michael Connolly

We were treated to an awesome show in the planetarium featuring stars, constellations, planets and galaxies. We had great fun finding out about the states of matter in our workshop and made two types of Non-Newtonian fluid. We also had enormous fun testing out all the other exhibits. We wished we could have stayed for longer! Mrs Sinclair

Awesome Book Awards
We are delighted that over 60 pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6 have signed up to take part in the Awesome Book Awards challenge. The participating pupils will read the shortlist of five books by April, after which they will rank the books. Over 90 schools took part last year and the winning author will be announced in May. We will have a party at Cranmore for all those who have taken part. It is wonderful to see how enthusiastic the children are about completing the five books and to hear them discussing the books they are reading. Last year, Cranmore’s most popular book was Brightstorm by Vashti Hardy, who visited our school in September. She has now been selected as one of the final three authors in the shortlist for the Blue Peter Book Awards 2020 for her second book, Wildspark! Mrs Watkinson and Mrs Spooner

Sports News Sport Report Football At the end of the football season, there is always a special tournament in which all age groups play against our friends at Rokeby. On Saturday, eight teams travelled to our opposition for the annual Henkes Shield, which was first contested in 1983. In the early kick-offs, the U9B & U10B teams both won, resulting in a 2-0 lead going into the next six matches. The momentum switched throughout these matches; at one point Rokeby were leading in four of these games. Could the Cranmore teams stage a comeback? By 10.40 a.m. all the matches were complete and, thankfully, our teams showed great commitment and determination to secure the Henkes Shield, with 5.5 points to 2.5 points. Congratulations to all the teams for their performances on the day and a big thank you to all those who travelled to support them. The final week of the core curriculum sport also included whole year group fixtures for U13/U12 versus Danes Hill, U9 vs KCJS and U10 vs Northcote Lodge (see results on the sports portal, via the Cranmore website). I would just like to take this opportunity to thank our Head of Football, Mr O'Neill, with the rest of the sports staff, for a very successful and fixture-packed football season. Netball On Friday, a great afternoon of netball took place with both our U8s and U9s playing against St Teresa's and with both teams managing a win. Hockey Saturday saw the St George's U8 hockey tournament take place where Cranmore won one game, drew three and were bronze medallists in the tournament. There was more hockey on Monday, with our U9s competing in the Danes Hill tournament in which they performed very well. Sports Kit As the temperature drops and we experience more wintery conditions, please remind your child to bring in suitable sports clothing. This includes their Cranmore sports tracksuit and under-layer/skins tops/bottoms (purchased from the school shop). They also need their mouth guards, depending on age/sport, and water bottles for fixtures.
