Pupils from Form One and UP pictured at Cherry Trees with their Harvest gifts

Dear Parents This edition has some marvellous photos from the various educational visits which have taken place recently. Yesterday we enjoyed our traditional Action Day in the senior department. As ever, I am most grateful to Mr Harris for running this event which not only is a showcase for our very talented pupils but is a powerful way to generate funds for charities too. I am sure you are aware that tickets are on sale for the CPA Fireworks Party and I thoroughly recommend this annual celebration which is a great treat for adults and children of all ages. Finally, I wish you and your family a most enjoyable half-term break. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Gifts for Number 5 and LeatherHEAD START

Harvest Gifts - THANK YOU! As part of our Harvest celebrations, the Nursery , LP and MP contributed gifts for Lime Grove Care Home for the Elderly, and UP and Form 1 contributed gifts for Cherry Trees. The Seniors collected gifts for LeatherHEAD START Homeless Hostel and the Number 5 Project in Guildford. Some children went with staff to deliver the goods, as seen in these pictures. May we take this opportunity to thank you all for your generous Harvest Offerings. In the busy world we live in it isn't easy to do all the things asked of us. But the response we received for the Harvest Offerings Appeal, both in the Junior and Senior Department, was exceptional and moving. You were all so generous in what you gave and I wanted to let you know it is really appreciated and it is all very gratefully received. Mr Jakubowski

Remembrance Day

As part of our commemoration to mark the Centenary of the end of the First World War, we are having a whole school assembly, at the end of which all the pupils will plant a cross. On each cross we would like the name of a soldier who lost their life in the war. Over half term we would like every pupil to research the name of a soldier who fell in the war, so that this can be written on the back of their cross. If you know of a family member who died in this war or any other war it could be a poignant time to reflect and remember them and their sacrifice. Names could be taken from the War Memorials in every village and town or researched on line. The information we would like is their name, rank and regiment and age. Thank you Mr Doyle-Davidson and Mr MacKinnon

Second Hand Uniform Shop We thought you would be interested in learning about our exciting, latest charity venture! Since we had a vast amount of surplus donated stock (which consisted of shorts, trousers, shirts, junior jogging bottoms) after the summer; we thought how it could be utilised best and if we could help any charities. After a lot of investigation, we found an organisation that would be delighted for our donations of old uniform. They are called ‘ICollectClothes’ and work with 5 partner charities. The funds received from sales of unwanted clothes will help the charities and the unwanted clothes are reused by the less fortunate. We have chosen two out of the five charities that we would like to help. They will receive £200 for every tonne of clothing collected, which is a wonderful way to help these smaller charities that don’t receive any funding. The first charity we are supporting is ‘Mercy Ships’. They have a fleet of hospital ships that reach out to the world’s poorest people and serve in more than 150 ports in developing nations around the world. They provide free surgery and medical care and since 1978, they have treated over 422,000 patients in village clinics and have performed more than 456,000 medical procedures, including cleft lip and palate repair. The second charity we are supporting is the Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary. They provide lifetime care and help to horses, ponies, donkeys, sheep, cows and cats that have been victims of physical and mental abuse, either as a result of ignorance or malicious intent. Their ethos is they provide them with an environment where they are safe and have a life built around them, giving them all they need and asking nothing of them, for the rest of their lives. We feel thrilled that we are able to help these two worthwhile, wonderful charities and we thank you for all your donations, that have made this possible. It’s fantastic! HALF PRICE WINTER COAT SALE (Only on non-ticketed coats) Before the cold weather sets in, please come and grab yourself a bargain by buying a half price winter coat! News from the Nursery Our most exciting news this week is that we are now taking 2 year olds from November into the Nursery! If you have a younger child and are interested in this, please do get in touch with our Registrar nicky.synott@cranmoreprep.co.uk to find out more. Last week we celebrated Harvest! The children brought in gifts generously donated by their parents and a small group of children went out on the minibus with Mrs Poulter and Miss Luke to deliver them to the residents of Lime Grove. The gifts were of course very much appreciated by the residents and staff there. We are very proud of the children being so grown-up and confidently giving the presents to individual residents. As part of our Harvest Celebrations we joined in with the Junior Department’s special Harvest assembly on Wednesday and then held our own in-house celebration on Thursday morning. The children sang favourite songs such as ‘Big Red Combine Harvester’ and the ‘Harvest Samba’, acted out the story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’ and said a prayer to thank God for all the lovely foods we enjoy each day. Toddler Group will take place this Friday 2-3.15pm in our Pre-Nursery playroom, but will not be meeting over the half-term break. We have an action-packed programme of Holiday Fun activities, both indoors and outside, between October 22nd and November 1st for children aged 2 1/2 to 5 years.

Fourth Form Expedition Expert advice and guidance from former army officers ensured that Form 4’s trip to Operation Encounter near Marlow on Tuesday 16 October was a day to remember. The children were split into four groups and took part in three activities: raft building and racing; an assault course where team skills came to the fore; and team-building exercises. Lunch was enlivened by real army rations, heated up and served to the pupils. The ginger pudding and sauce was particularly popular! Thank you to Miss Fagan, Mrs Preedy and Mr Martin for accompanying us on a great day out. Mr Chapman

Music News

We all enjoyed a superb performance by our bassoon teacher, Miss Dubery, in the whole school assembly today. She currently has space in her timetable to start lessons with new pupils, so if your child would like a taster session on this fabulous instrument, please do let me know and I will arrange this. Mr Harris

. School Council Trip to the Houses of Parliament and the Churchill War Rooms Last Friday, the newly elected members of the School Council travelled to Westminster to visit the Palace of Westminster, the home of British democracy. On our arrival, we watched a short film which explained the history of democracy in Great Britain. After this we entered the historic Houses of Parliament. We were lucky enough to be able to enter both the House of Lords and the House of Commons as there were no debates taking place that day. After lunch, we spent some time exploring the Churchill War Rooms and museum. Cheering broke out inside the bus as we pulled up outside the beautiful and grand Houses of Parliament. The heavy police presence as we were led inside was rather intimidating. First, we were shown the Monarch’s entrance which is used by the Queen once a year when she visits for the State Opening of Parliament. Inside the robing room we saw paintings of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Below the paintings was a very majestic chair made especially for Queen Victoria. We then entered the House of Lords, a very big room which was full of red seats. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to sit on them! We then passed through Central Lobby and into the House of Commons, a very large room full of green seats. Our guide explained how MPs bob up and down to let the Speaker know they wish to take the floor. When trying to pass a bill, the two Houses play what is known as ‘ping pong’ until either an agreement is reached or the bill falls. We saw some statues of previous British Prime Ministers, including Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill. As we were leaving, we saw Big Ben; an impressive sight! It was a fantastic trip. The U8s KCJS Centenary festival kicked off our weekend of sport last Friday with Cranmore entering two teams. Our B side showed outstanding character to match up against some strong sides with excellent work ethic, especially in their defensive play. Our A side showed plenty of determination, winning three knockout games post pool stages to reach the final against Downsend. The game (and extra time) finished 1-1 which meant a penalty shoot-out was to decide the outcome of the match and competition. Cranmore showed fortitude and calmness in winning the penalty shoot-out which meant they were the 2018 KCJS Plate winners. On a fine Saturday morning, the Henderson Fields were the venue for all children in the 4th form to play in football matches, with Cranmore fielding sides from A to F. Our visiting teams were Danes Hill and Feltonfleet, which allowed no fewer than 10 matches to take place. Over 100 family members from all teams supported the children from the sidelines and even managed time to try a sausage and/or bacon bap from our catering team. Our U11s A & B competed in a triangular at Feltonfleet School, with the other team being Danes Hill. Unfortunately, due to adverse weather, the rowing on Sunday at Bath was cancelled. This week, the U9s had six teams playing away against Danes Hill, our 1st XI featured in the Surrey Cup quarter final on Tuesday and our Swim Squad competed on Wednesday at the KCJS swimming gala. Thursday saw three of our U9 football teams featuring against Parkside and on Friday we have House Football for U12/U13s (2nd round) and U10s. Rowing on Saturday concludes this week with the Weybridge Silver Sculls, and we have 2 doubles from the 6th Form racing over the 3000m course. For fixtures, team sheets and more information please use the sports portal via the Cranmore school website, or use the very useful Cranmore sports web app. Please also find us on twitter @cranmoresport Mr P Hodgson

5th Form Visit to Mill on the Brue Whether it was getting the team across a river, rescuing a trapped pilot from underground or guiding each other blindfolded round an assault course, the 5th Form rose to the challenge that their weekend away at Mill on the Brue presented to them. Whilst the weather added to the challenge on the Saturday, their tenacity and teamwork saw them through. Mr MacKinnon and myself were delighted with the outcome. The instructors were complimentary about the boys, their ability to solve problems and to work together as a team. Everyone gained from the weekend away, whether it was through developing greater self-belief, problem-solving, listening skills, teamworking or understanding of each other. Mr Doyle-Davidson
