28 MARCH 2022 Message from the Headmaster The term has concluded with some outstanding contributions from pupils, staff and parents. The CPA Quiz Night last Friday night was a wonderful success and thoroughly enjoyed by parents and staff. The Spring Soiree was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to display an abundance of musical talent, everyone in the auditorium was incredibly impressed and proud of the way in which the pupils performed. I am sure our strings players will be excellent ambassadors for Cranmore when we host five other schools for the Nicola Benedetti workshop at the beginning of the new term. It is a phenomenally exciting time for Cranmore, and this week I was delighted to share that we have been granted planning permission for the new Science and Technology Centre. This building will provide four new science laboratories, another dedicated Design and Technology room, an additional ICT suite, more classrooms, and an exhibition area for the pupil to display projects. We look forward to next term as it promises to be equally enriching with an array of activities, trips and experiences scheduled for the pupils. I wish you all an enjoyable Easter break. Mr Everitt
Year 8 practise their debating skills Mr Chapman's Year 8 English group debated two motions shortly before the Easter holidays: the first, 'This House believes that homework should be abolished' was passed with a thumping majority; the second, 'This House believes that Year 9 should choose their own curriculum' was more closely contested, but on this occasion, the motion was defeated. Mr Chapman
Adventure Wales Logo Competition We had a number of fantastic entries for the Adventure Wales Logo Competition. Our winner was Matthew R and his design will now be used as the official logo for the Adventure Wales trip. In addition, the logo will be embroidered or printed on the student’s soft shell jackets for the trip. They will be ready for distribution a few weeks before we head to Wales. I would like to thank all those who entered and all entries were awarded a worthy distinction!
Mr Cross Head of Year 7
NEW! Our Eco Council We are delighted to introduce to you our Senior Eco Council Leaders! This new team will be working hard to support the Cranmore community in making changes to make our school a more environmentally friendly place to work in. They already have a lot of great ideas regarding the biodiversity of the area, energy usage and the amount of waste we get through in a single day. They understand that they hold a position of great responsibility; all boys are determined to take this seriously. The applications from Billy C, George B and Thomas A portrayed their passion for ecological issues and were an inspiring read. These three boys will be our first Eco-Council Champions and as such will have greater leadership roles within the team as it grows. We will be inviting the Upper Prep students to apply to join the Eco Council after the Easter Holidays.
Our Eco Councillors: Artom E, Sebastian R, Thomas W, George B , Thomas A and Billy C (not pictured)

Year 5 Romans Day On Tuesday 29th March, Year 5 participated in a Roman workshop. In the morning we learned about roman games like Merles where you had to connect the counters through the middle of the board. We also learned about another game called Delta where you had to flick three counters onto a board, count the scores, and whoever had the biggest number won. Near midday we had a quiz about the Romans and there were 8 sections to the quiz. Later we learned how to be successful Roman soldiers by understanding Latin orders. We also marked the quiz; I got all the questions correct. In the last part of the workshop, we learned about Boudicca and her forces. We learned how she died and about the horrible massacre at the valley. We learned about gladiators, how long it took to build the colosseum and saw a fake gladiator fight. Eoghan F Today, in Year five, we learnt all about the Roman Empire and emperors. In the morning we enjoyed playing Roman board games, which were really fun. The game was played using Roman numerals. We then did a worksheet on different areas of Roman life, one of them was called ‘Know your enemy’ which was about the weapons they had and their tactics in war. We then looked at ancient Roman artefacts, which included armour, weaponry and roman coins. In the afternoon we enjoyed acting out a battle between Boudicca and the Romans, demonstrating how the Romans defeated the Iceni. Finally, we discovered more about the gladiators and acted out a fight between them in the colosseum and we shouted out who we thought would win. It was a really interesting and fun day. Thomas Y

Huge congratulations to all the pupils who performed so brilliantly at the Soiree on Wednesday night. We have all missed the buzz of live music and it was wonderful that so many parents and staff supported this event. I know from the many comments I received following the concert, how well it was received by all those who were present. It is fascinating to see the musicianship of the boys develop over time, from our younger pupils who performed with Training Strings to the older boys of Bel Canto who sang with such a sense of maturity and style. Bravo to one and all! Keep working hard on your music!! Mr Harris
Music workshop in Lower Prep We were delighted to welcome Year 1 and 2 from Glenesk School to Cranmore last week for a Music Workshop with our Year 2 pupils. The children were able to explore the theme ‘The Power of Music’ in a variety of different ways. They were able to create powerful imagery through their performances to ‘The Power of Nature’, using body percussion, recorders and their voices. They also joined together in a very moving song for their finale ‘We are One’. It was wonderful to be able to see the children perform so enthusiastically for their audience and we are looking forward to hosting future joint events.
Last Week’s House Cup Winners Congratulations to Stokes House in the Lower Prep and Tylor House in the Upper Prep and Seniors for earning the highest number of merits last week.

Year 2 Study Daffodils Year 2 have loved learning about William Wordsworth and reading his poem ‘Daffodils’. They read other daffodil poems and then wrote their own acrostic poems which they wrote neatly into their Easter cards. They then looked at daffodils closely, looking at the lines, shapes, and colours. The pupils worked really hard to draw them accurately and then used water colours to create these beautiful daffodil paintings.
Year 2 loved their fabulous finisher to their exciting Explorers topic watching Miss Minikin launch a rocket!

Indian celebrations for Year 3 Year 3 have been learning all about India this term and ended their topic with a celebration. They made posters about India using printed borders, designed mehndi patterns, dressed up in traditional Indian clothing, handled artefacts from India and even got to sample some Indian food prepared by the talented chefs in the Cranmore kitchens. The afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Ms Sinclair and Miss Freeman
Nursery News We were very lucky with the weather for our Mother’s Day event in the Cranmore Nursery garden. The children had made beautiful Spring flower headbands which they wore whilst performing their special songs to their mummies. They had previously planted cosmos seeds and they had fun planting the seedlings in the pots they had decorated with their mummies to take home. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

Sports Roundup It has been a very pleasing term of sport with many teams and squads achieving success at various tournaments and events. However, more recently it has been our hockey season that has been most rewarding. We have had the highest amount of hockey matches of any season to date, totalling over 100 in our 6 week season. A testament to the programme is the number of teams that went undefeated. This included teams: U9C, U9E, U9F, U11C, U11D, U11E, U11F, U13D, U13E, and U13F (*minimum of 3 matches to be counted). Thank you to Head of Hockey, Mr Down, for leading one of our core sports superbly well. Mr Hodgson, Director of Sport
