Year 3: Super Class Assembly 20th September 2019 Dear Parents

This is truly a bumper edition which demonstrates the remarkable variety of activities which have been going on at Cranmore recently across many different year groups. We were delighted to welcome Year 6 girls and their parents to Cranmore yesterday for a tour—given by our Year 6 boys—followed by refreshments. We are looking forward to tomorrow morning when we host our Open Morning and, again, pupils will have a leading role by conducting the tours for prospective families.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Connolly

Junior News Year 3 are learning all about Forces in Science. They went outside and completed different activities. They then had to discuss the forces used in each activity: pull, push and twist.

These children in Year 3 enjoyed a hands-on activity testing the friction of different surfaces during their Science lesson.

Junior News 3CS performed an excellent class assembly on Wednesday. They used the theme ‘Be the best you can be’. They told the story of the stonecutter who learnt to value his own gifts and talents.

Year 2 enjoyed brainstorming amazing adjectives to describe a castle setting.

Senior News In their Drama lessons this week, Year 4 have been exploring techniques and skills used to tell stories through Drama. It’s great to share their imagination and talents. A wonderful start to their dramatic journey at Cranmore! Mrs Hannah Hanson

Senior News Year 4 Teambuilding On Tuesday, the Year 4s had an amazing day with the team from Wise Up Teambuilding. We completed a whole range of activities designed to help the pupils as part of their transition and as a welcome to the Senior School. We focussed on communication, listening and working together. A great time was had by all and the pupils certainly got a lot out of the experience. Hopefully they can all use these important life skills as they move up through the school! Mr Jon Hinds

At their first Cookery club session of the term, the children made chocolate krispie cake!

Senior News Father Stephen, who holds a Doctorate in Radio Astronomy from Cambridge, gave a presentation on Creation from a scientific perspective to Years 7 and 8.

Year 7 have started the year fulfilling their responsibilities. Each Tuesday they are on recycling duty for our Cranmore family.

Senior News Year 8 conducted Geography field work on the Tillingbourne.

This week, Year 8 biologists have been recreating, arguably, the most important chemical reaction in the world. Green plants take the simple molecules of carbon dioxide and water and, using light energy, make glucose and oxygen. This feat was replicated using Molymod chemistry sets.

Sports News The first full week of term turned out to be very busy, including acquiring some silverware along the way. Our 1st and 2nd XI football teams were victorious in their respective triangular tournaments, against Cranleigh and Lambrook School. On Thursday, our U9s girls played their first netball match of the season against Hoe Bridge. On Friday, there were whole year group matches for the very excited Year 3 pupils against Danes Hill. The boys participated in football whilst the girls played hockey (winning both matches). Also on the same afternoon, there were six Year 5 football matches, hosted at KCS, Wimbledon. It was a very successful weekend for Cranmore Sport, starting with the 1st VII football team winning the Plate at the Parkside 5-a-side Tournament. On Sunday, our Ski Squad participated in the ESSKIA Qualifiers in Southampton. Both our U12 and U14 Cranmore Teams qualified for the Nationals, which will be hosted in Norwich in October. A relatively new competition at the Qualifiers is the Mixed Teams Competition. The only age category is U19s, but Cranmore were still able to enter a team. I am pleased to say that the team which included Sophie (aged 9), Isola (7), Oliver (8) and Vinny (10), skied superbly achieving second overall. At the start of this week our 1st XI Football Team, beat Parkside 4-2 in the Surrey Prep School League, whilst on Tuesday there were four matches against Parkside for the U11s. On the glorious afternoon there was some fantastic football on show, which included quick passing, attacking football and solid defending. Cranmore won all the Year group matches, with an aggregate tally of 17 goals scored, with only 2 conceded. Now that we have had several matches on the Henderson fields this term, it has allowed us to fully appreciate the condition of the pitches. Not only do they look fantastic (with the back drop of the golf course and the Forest School), but the surface allows good passing football. Both Cranmore and visiting parents have been very complimentary regarding the Henderson fields. A big thank you to Mike, Ashley and the rest of the grounds team for providing first class facilities for the children. Sports News 1st VII at Parkside tournament On Saturday 14th September, the 1st Vll travelled to Parkside for their annual tournament. In a very close group, we finished third to progress to the main quarter-finals, where we faced Rokeby. A narrow defeat meant that we were then placed into the Plate semi-final, where we defeated the Aldro B team to take our place in the final against Parkside A. In a pulsating match, with chances at both ends, the team engineered a great goal to win the contest 1-0 and were crowned Plate winners! Mr Fergal O’Neill

Our U9 netball team played their first netball match of the season against Hoe Bridge.

We were blessed with glorious sunshine last Thursday for our first cross country club session of the term.

Music News Cranmore’s Choirs We have a huge range of opportunities for pupils at Cranmore who play or sing. All rehearsals are well underway now. We run the following choirs: 

Senior Chamber Choir – this is our top choir and entry is by audition only. Pupils wishing to audition for this choir should approach Mrs Thornton. Children in this choir compete in festivals, sing in concerts, the Carol Service and at the Soirée.

Jubilee Choir – this choir is open to any senior pupil who loves to sing. No audition necessary, just lots of enthusiasm! Pupils in this choir also sing at concerts and the Carol Service and sing a more ‘popular’ style of music throughout the year.

Training Orchestra Has your child just passed Grade 1 on their instrument? Maybe it is time for them to join one of the many ensembles at Cranmore, Training Orchestra. Pupils in this group get together and rehearse every Friday morning at break time in the Auditorium. This is the first opportunity for Cranmore pupils to play in a group and it is great fun. The instrumental parts are easy to play with a little practice and the music chosen is very popular in style.

Don’t delay, musicians, join soon!

Alex R. in Year 5 brought in and played his Russian balalaika!

Music News That’s What I Call Cranmore Album! Copies of Cranmore’s debut album are available to purchase for £10 from Mr Harris and Mrs Thornton. If your child participated in a music ensemble or choir last year, they will feature on this wonderful album. We have already had fantastic feedback about the phenomenal standard. Buy your copy now so you do not miss out. It would also make a brilliant Christmas present.
