The Chronicle - 29 November 2019

29th November 2019 Dear Parents, I very much enjoyed the Junior Chamber Choir’s performance at Ockham last Sunday. It is wonderful that our connection with that church has been maintained through the decades since Cranmore’s foundation. I was also most impressed with the Year 5 production of A Christmas Carol. The acting, choreography and, of course, the singing were all excellent. This edition has a wealth of sporting news, covering a remarkable range of activities for pupils across many year groups. Next week, we shall be in December and so we can look forward to two Nativity performances, on Tuesday and Thursday, which will remind us of the real message for Christmas. Yours sincerely, Michael Connolly

Nursery News

The Nursery children used the apparatus in the Gym to practise their balancing and jumping.

There was an abundance of leaves at Forest School in which to play!

We made spiders at Forest School.

We searched for spider webs and made our own webs, using twigs and wool.

The children enjoyed dressing up and riding on their sleigh.

Junior News Year 2 are studying China as their topic this term and had two exciting visits this week. The first was from Mr Gardner, who ran a workshop on Tuesday. They learnt about the Chinese New Year, some geography of the country and some basic Mandarin, including counting and greetings.

Their second visit was from one of our Year 2 parents, Mrs Yang, who came to teach them more about China. They sang Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, learnt some numbers again and tried to pick up different objects with chopsticks.

Junior News 2AB have filled up their marble jar again! For their treat, they decorated some gingerbread men with different coloured icing and sprinkles.

2RF also filled their marble jar this week and chose a ‘chocolate fountain’ as their treat!

Reception had a fantastic day learning all about St Andrew. They learnt about his job, made and decorated the St Andrew’s flag and even had a quiz at the end of the day!

Senior News Year 5 Performance of A Christmas Carol On Wednesday 27th November, the Year 5 pupils performed an adapted version of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, called ‘Bah Humbug’. The performance was a great success. The pupils worked so hard to learn lines, dances and songs. They delivered this moral, well-known tale with enthusiasm and commitment.

Mrs Hanson

Year 4 had a very enjoyable trip to see Horrible Histories: Awful Egyptians last Friday.

Sports News Sports Report Netball and Hockey Our girls’ sports teams are on a great run at the moment. On Thursday, the U8s netball team entered the Cranleigh tournament, managing to win all four matches and being presented with the accolade of 'Team of the Tournament'. Monday saw the U8s and U9s hockey teams play against St George’s which turned out to be a great afternoon of hockey in spite of the damp conditions. There were some excellent skills on show, which resulted in two wins and a draw for Cranmore. Rugby The U13s entered the Worth tournament last Wednesday and the afternoon started with a thumping victory in which the squad looked very promising. While they played well to remain unbeaten in their group, injuries and fatigue began to set in, which left the squad depleted for the knock out stages. A semi-final exit cut the afternoon short, but lessons were learnt for the rest of the season. The U11s in the same tournament had a fantastic outing of rugby for the squad. There was plenty of enthusiasm and team spirit, which allowed the team to progress to the final. Well done to both squads.

Many other rugby fixtures have taken place across the different age groups against Cranleigh, Danes Hill, Feltonfleet and Trinity school. Squash On Tuesday, the U11s & U13s squash teams travelled to Lancing to compete in their annual tournament. Both teams played some superb squash to reach the main competition. Unfortunately, the U13s lost in the semi final but the U11s won theirs to reach the final, just falling short at the last hurdle. Well done to all those who took part. Finally, we are very honoured again to be included in the top 50 prep schools by the highly-regarded and prestigious 'The Cricketer' magazine. Well done to all players, parents and staff. Mr Hodgson
