4 OCTOBER 2021 Message from the Headmaster On Saturday morning the clouds cleared for the start of our Open Day with many families turning up early to have a tour of Cranmore. The grounds, facilities and pupils looked immaculate and the record number of parents were incredibly impressed with our school. Thank you to all the pupils, and staff that helped to make the day such a special event for our guests. I was privileged to attend the Lower Prep Music Assembly to hear some of our wonderfully talented pupils sing and play musical instruments. Parents and pupils were treated to performances on the oboe, piano, recorder and choral displays by the Cranmore Singers and Chamber Choir. On Wednesday evening, we hosted our Senior School Information evening for parents. They had an opportunity to hear about the future development plan including the curriculum, extra-curricular provision, staffing and the details of the new Science and Technology Centre. The planning application for the facility will be summitted before half term and the new building will accommodate a number of state-of-the-art science labs, IT room, DT room, additional classrooms and an exhibition space to enhance the provision for pupils as we move towards GCSE. As you will be aware, the Government has made it a national priority that education should continue as normally as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have set out clear guidance, which we are following, to ensure the benefits in managing infection are weighed against any educational drawbacks. We are continuously reviewing and reinforcing the measures we already have in place to reduce the possibility of transmission, such as our cleaning, hygiene and ventilation procedures. Following advice from Public Health England, received yesterday morning, assemblies will be held online for the remainder of this half term. Sadly, this includes the grandparents’ assembly scheduled for next week. This is as disappointing for us as it will be for our pupils and their families. Our nurses continue to monitor cases in school and should we be required to take additional measures, we will of course keep you informed. Thank you for your continued support.
Mr Everitt
On Thursday, we celebrated Harvest Mass with Father Stephen. Thank you on behalf of LeatherHEAD START for your wonderful generosity in supporting the homeless at this time. Thank you also to Year 3 for their beautiful Harvest artwork.
Autumn seeds and spinners If you have been for a walk recently, you may have noticed conkers bursting open under horse chestnut trees, squirrels gathering acorns , been blackberry picking or even had to de-fuzz your dog covered in grass seeds or burrs after a walk. Plants are in full seed dispersal mode and Year 5 have been learning about the four methods of dispersal, whilst investigating how the size of a sycamore helicopter wing affects the time it takes to fall to the ground. As one of the group pointed out, seed dispersal is as much about forces and Physics, as nature colonizing new areas. Dr Verny White
Investigating Forces Year 3 have been investigating magnets as part of their Forces topic.

Forest School fun for Reception One of our favourite times of the week in Reception is Forest School! The children have been creating spider conkers, relaxing in the hammocks, following exciting obstacle courses and warming up with a lovely hot chocolate or juice. Mrs Green and Mrs Prothero
Having a ‘whale’ of a time in Year 1! As part of their topic on Oceans, Year 1 have been writing facts about whales and have enjoyed painting whales too. A trip to Forest School was another highlight this week. Mrs Hastings and Mrs Bowen

Nursery learn about looking after their teeth. For ‘Show and Tell’ this week, the children brought in items for the Phoneme ‘p’. In Science, the Nursery children have been learning all about dental hygiene. They engaged in an activity selecting different pictures of food and discussed whether they were good or bad for their teeth. In the Nursery garden, the children enjoyed riding round the track on the bikes and using chalks to create their own pictures. Ms Luke Head of Nursery
Sports Roundup Our Swim Squad (Years 3 to 8) had their first ever win over ACS Cobham - an international school that has always had a strong swimming programme. Three of our ski teams are competing in Norwich tomorrow at the ESSKIA Finals. It has been a very busy period of football matches which has included fixtures almost every day for the last four weeks. The U11s are into the quarter final of the Surrey Cup after beating Staines Prep in the last round. Chelsea FC provided an outstanding masterclass for our Year 5 on the morning of our Open Day. Our Scholarship and Performance session this week focused on cricket skills, athletic development and plyometrics. Mr Hodgson Director of Sport
