Cranmore Chronicle 7th June 2019 Editor: Mrs S Watkinson

Dear Parents This edition has a most eclectic mix of news items. In particular, I wish to thank the school council members who ran such a successful Fair just before half-term. This event raised nearly £600 for Cancer Research UK. I have spent a significant part of this week carrying out a school inspection. There is a certain intensity in being parachuted in to another school and trying to produce a report within a remarkably short period which is a true reflection of the school community. That stated, it is always a pleasure to see how another school operates and one always leaves better informed about the ever changing world of education. I suspect our turn will come soon and it always begins by a phone call on a Monday morning…… I shall await the call. Yours sincerely, Michael Connolly

UF filled their marble jar and chose an art and disco party with sweets and cake!

At the end of their topic of Kenya, Upper Prep enjoyed a visit from Sebie’s father, sharing the story of his epic climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. UC then finished with a tasting of some Kenyan tea.

Upper Prep enjoyed a visit from Phil from The Zoo Lab, who shared many interesting facts about these African creatures.

Over half term, UF completed these research posters of famous explorers and adventurers and shared them with the class at the start of their new topic.

Seniors

Two of our pupils participated in the Surrey Chess Mega Final, having qualified from our After School Chess Club. 40,000 children enter the UK chess challenge but only 20% qualify for the Mega Finals. They competed against boys from other schools in a full day of competitive chess at Caterham School, playing 6 matches each. They played well and Harvey has qualified for the Giga Final (Regional Competition), which will be held at the end of June. Charlie improved on his score from last year but just missed getting through by half a point.

Over the next few weeks most of the Art lessons will be given over to scenery and prop making for ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.

Pinch pots ready for glazing. This is the simplest method of creating a pot. Pupils were told that they should aim to make something that was so perfect that it looked as though it had been made by a machine!

Hand-built vessels by 5M, successfully fired and ready for glazing. These were difficult pieces to build and relied upon pupils achieving strong clay bonds.

Thank you to the senior pupils and parents for supporting the School Council Fair. It was a most enjoyable afternoon.

The Fair raised £577 for the pupils’ nominated charity, Cancer Research UK.

Sports Focus *Please sign up and support the Cranmore Canter*

This is a 'fun run'-style occasion for all abilities with the option to enter one of two different course distances (1.5km or 3km). It will take place on the morning of Sunday 30th June at 9.00 a.m., with the shorter race taking place on the Cranmore school site and the longer race including surrounding Horsley countryside. The occasion promises to be an enjoyable event for everyone connected with Cranmore and we hope to see as many as possible joining us. See flyer for more information. Send names and specified distance (1.5km or 3km) for each runner to cranmorecanter@cranmoreprep.co.uk - ÂŁ3 per participant, added to school fees. Before half term, cricket matches were played across the school against: Danes Hill, Aldro, Parkside and Pyrford CofE Primary school. Our U8/U9s girls cricket teams played either side of the break versus Belmont and St. George's. One of these matches, played on The Front at Cranmore against St. George's, had an enthralling finish with Cranmore securing victory by just one run. A tennis fixture took place on the Thursday before we broke up against Danes Hill with the U13 resulting in a well-fought win. On Tuesday the U11s played a whole year group cricket fixture, with four teams playing against Downsend. Despite the temporary disruption due to bad weather, the matches ended with Cranmore securing three wins with one being a 'non scoring' match. Events

Notices URGENT: The Second Hand Shop Needs You! Dear Parents, After my last letter asking for volunteers for The Second Hand Shop, unfortunately no one came forward! Sadly, I leave in July, as Oliver will be leaving the 6th Form after many happy years at Cranmore. This only leaves Suzanne in the shop as Carol has now started working after volunteering alongside myself for the past few years. So WE NEED YOU! We need at least 2 new volunteers to help keep the Second Hand Shop open. For those of you who use the shop, you will know what an important part of Cranmore life it is. It’s a perfect opportunity to do your bit for the Cranmore CPA and to give a little of your time. All profit goes directly to the CPA which is put back into the school for the benefit of our children. All you need to do is to either give half an hour of your time or one hour a week, every Friday between 8-9 a.m. So why not grab a friend and volunteer together? Being part of the Second Hand Shop is very rewarding and it’s a great way to meet fellow parents at the school and it is fun! I can honestly say I’ve loved my time volunteering and managing the Second Hand Shop. Unfortunately, if no extra volunteers come forward, then we will have no option but to sadly close the Second Hand Shop as it just can’t stay open and be run with one volunteer. This is why we haven’t been able to open the Shop this Friday as, due to unforeseen circumstances, none of us could make it this Friday morning and we had no extra volunteers to call on. So, please do get in touch! Many thanks, Louise Broadbelt Mobile: 07796 715425 Email: louise_broadbelt@hotmail.com

Please would the owner of this Car Combi Bag, who kindly lent it to the School Office on 30th April 2019, pick it up from the School Office.
