Cranmore Chronicle 14th June 2019 Editor: Mrs S Watkinson

Dear Parents This edition has news on recent educational visits. In addition, there are plenty of articles about our various sporting successes, including U9 Tennis; the Swim Squad at IAPS; the Golf Team at the Oratory Competition; the Blenheim Palace Regatta, and, of course, our traditional 1st XI Cricket Tour. Looking further ahead, there are full details included for holiday courses on Rowing, Football, and Tennis. On Wednesday, we held our special Mass in celebration for all those children who have recently taken their First Holy Communion. As ever, this was followed by refreshments and a wonderful, specially decorated cake. Yours sincerely, Michael Connolly

On Friday morning, the Juniors had a very busy Marvellous Maths Morning. Parents were invited in to see Maths in action across the Junior Department. The children took part in a range of problem-solving activities in their classrooms and had the opportunity to teach their parents about the methods and resources they use to solve a wide variety of challenging problems. It was fantastic to see their love for maths and independent problem-solving skills developing so well!

The Third Form had a very enjoyable and informative Geography field trip to the Living Rainforest in Berkshire.

4th Form Trip to Battle Form 4 braved soggy conditions and headed for the East Sussex town of Battle, scene of the famous Battle of Hastings. Morale remained high despite the deteriorating weather, and the children had the opportunity to participate in a limited re-enactment of that historic event. Nothing the Saxons could do, however, changed the result: Normans 1 Saxons 0‌‌.much to the delight of the accompanying Miss Meneghin, I might add! Adam McKinnon

These senior pupils took part in Art, Drama and Music presentations towards their Cranmore Creativity Award on Tuesday 11th June. They all spoke enthusiastically about their art work, performed their drama confidently and shared their musical talents with their parents.

Sports Focus *Please sign up and support the Cranmore Canter* This is a 'fun run' style occasion for all abilities with the option to enter one of two different course distances (1.5km or 3km). It will take place on the morning of Sunday 30th June at 9.00 a.m., with the shorter race taking place on the Cranmore school site and the longer race including the grounds of West Horsley Place. The occasion promises to be an enjoyable morning for everyone connected with Cranmore and we hope to have lots of people registered for the event. See flyer for more information. Please send names and specified distance (1.5km or 3km) for each runner to cranmorecanter@cranmoreprep.co.uk - ÂŁ3 per participant, added to school fees.

We had an action-packed weekend of sport, including members of our Swim Squad attending the IAPS Finals and our U10s Cricket Team competing at the Danes Hill Sixes Tournament. There was also our 1st XI West Country Cricket Tour taking place, as well as our rowers participating at the Blenheim Palace Regatta. Please see the separate reports. Swimming The Swim Squad performed superbly at the IAPS on Saturday. The event, held at the London Aquatics Centre, included swimmers from all over the country and yet all the Cranmore teams made the finals. Our U10s freestyle team finished 5th, and a special mention must go to James M, who reached the U12s 50m Breaststroke Final, clocking an impressive 39.35 PB. Tennis Two double pairings represented Cranmore at the U9s King's College School Tennis Tournament last Wednesday. Theo and Mathew M played very well and only just missed out on a semi-final spot in the 14-team event. The other Cranmore pairing, Brennan C and Thomas L, won all six group matches to progress to the knockout stages. The two boys beat Amesbury in the semi-final and KCJS in the Final. Brennan and Thomas played superbly, winning 27 games in total and remarkably only lost one throughout the afternoon. Well done to both teams! Golf Our golfers performed very well at The Oratory School Tournament on Tuesday. The event included eight schools and I am happy to say that Cranmore finished second overall. Darragh Finlayson achieved a further accolade for 'closest to the pin'.

The Cranmore Golf Day On Sunday, The Drift Golf Club hosted the 4th annual Cranmore Golf Day and we welcomed many people from all parts of the Cranmore community. On the day, we had 25 pupils and 41 adults playing and we had more family members join us for tea and prizes in the evening. Well done to the past and present staff team for winning the 18-hole match, and to Mr Everitt, Mr Harris, Richard Broadbelt and Oliver Broadbelt for winning the 9-hole match. Thank you to all who attended for making the afternoon so special. Cricket Weather has affected cricket fixtures over the last week, but our U9s were able to play their matches against Donhead. Fantastic batting and some good running between the wickets contributed to winning all six matches. Paul Hodgson, Director of Sport

Blenheim Palace Regatta — A day to remember! Our last big rowing event of the year took place in the spectacular surroundings of Blenheim Palace on the lake. Conditions were tough, with very strong winds and rough water to contend with, meaning the small boat events for the younger age groups had to be cancelled. First off were Jake Crehan Mills and Olivier Hinds who won the silver medal in J13 double sculls. It was then time for the quadruple sculls where we formed crews with Cranmore and Walton members. The J12 crew, with Alex Roberts on board, came home with a bronze medal. In the J11 quadruple sculls, Igor Tokarcyzk and Alec Weidner combined with the sculler for Danes Hill to win the gold medal just ahead of Hugo Rees, Seb Crehan Mills and Seth Hillas, who won the silver medal. To round the weekend off, we had a training session on Sunday morning at Walton and followed this with a session in which the boys had the opportunity to teach their parents how to scull in a fleet of training boats. I admired the parents’ enthusiasm and effort but feel a little more practice may be required for them to reach the same standard as their sons! Brian Martin

1st XI Cricket Tour 2019 The 1st XI had another successful cricket tour of the West Country — its 15th consecutive year! Although the weather washed out our match against Clifton Prep in Bristol, there were excellent victories at Dauntsey’s and Prior Park. The tour should prove valuable preparation for their remaining fixtures of the term, especially their Surrey Cup semi-final against Kings House.

Music Department Open House The Music Department will be holding its annual ‘Open House’ starting on Monday 17th June. If your child receives an individual instrumental or singing lesson here at Cranmore, please feel free to come and meet their teacher and observe your child’s lesson. This is an excellent opportunity for you to get feedback from the member of music staff teaching them and to discuss their progress and future targets. Please sign in at the school office on your arrival and then proceed to the Music Department. Richard Harris, Director of Music

Congratulations to these two talented young pianists who played superbly in Senior Assembly.
