BOARDING NEWS

Last weekend the boarders travelled into London by train to Camden. It was a busy day, but this made the atmosphere around the market very festive. The girls bought gifts to take home for their families. Street food was devoured, and many photos were taken for the girls’ memory books. On Sunday, cupcakes were made with Miss Hill. Next weekend we hope to make dumplings!

The weekend also meant watching football. The Mexican girls made snacks for their match and the Spanish and German boarders watched their home teams too.

Next week we will be Ice Skating.

SIXTH FORM NEWS

On Thursday morning, Year 11 came to the Sixth Form Centre to learn more about A Level subjects. The year 12 Subject Ambassadors were very excited to give the year below a student’s point of view on the different subjects. Both years shared an assortment of pastries and the Year 12s are looking forward to welcoming them to Sixth Form next year.

Julia (Year 12)

The A Level English Literature students watched a performance of Othello at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing on Thursday afternoon. The production was by the theatre company Frantic Assembly. This was an enjoyable and valuable opportunity to see a live production of the play which we are studying for our A Level, and I really enjoyed this interpretation of the play.

During the Sixth Form’s enrichment session on Friday afternoon, the Years 12 and 13 students split into groups to do different activities. These included yoga, volunteering, wellbeing, current affairs and learning a new skill. It was great for both years to get together and enjoy their enrichment session at the end of this busy week.

On Friday afternoon, the Head Girl Team recorded the first episode of the St Teresa’s podcast! We explored the history of our school, with our guest speakers being Miss Nelson, Mrs Gardner and Mrs Ford who used to be the Deputy Headmistress. Liv, Pippa and I really enjoyed interviewing them and learning a lot about the history of St T’s.

I hope everyone has a restful weekend.

On arrival at St Ives we made our way down to the harbour, where we arrived at a lookout point overseeing the entirety of St Ives. Sketchbooks were out and our first sketch was made, afterwards we descended and spent the afternoon drawing until we had to re climb the hill to check into the wonderful Tregenna Castle Hotel.

Half way on the way to the Engine Houses, Mrs Uren pulled our bus driver over to the side of the road in the pouring rain to sketch and photograph the Cars Clavier Mine. The actual Botallack Engine Houses we were meant to see looked as though they were about to fall off the cliff, which Mrs Uren was convinced was going to happen to us! The rain was still pelting down, meaning Klara’s yellow poncho made an entrance, but everyone quickly made a run for shelter. At the Maritime Museum we were able to study a multitude of flying boats as well as some creatures from the deep.

The third day was drier, with the sun even shining once more. The Tate had a wonderful exhibition of some of Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures as well as some of her studies. The artist Sol LeWitt was also exhibited with his wall painting. We then had a lovely lunch on a wall overlooking the ocean. Next we went to Barbara Hepworth’s Sculpture Garden; her creations led the way for other female artists, and her inclusivity and imaginative designs helped St Ives become the artist hub that it now is. We had some free time in the harbour to do some shopping as well as to complete some extra drawing. The sunset was stunning

On the way back we stopped off at the Eden Project, viewing the biomes of the Mediterranean and the Rainforest. My favourite was the rainforest, which had a waterfall all the way from the top cascading down to the bottom. The trees were extremely tall and the variety of plants made this tropical environment a wonder to the eye. Everyone arrived back to school extremely tired, but filled with much happiness and a sketchbook full of illustrations.

MATHS MASTERCLASS

Last Friday, the Year 12 Maths students had the great opportunity to have a masterclass session lead by Rachel, who works at the Royal Institute in London. We learnt different ways to effectively teach KS2 students, and learnt presentation skills to involve the younger pupils. These students are from both St Teresa’s Prep School and other schools. We also started to plan our lessons which will take place next term. We are looking forward to putting our skills to use!

PLANET GAZING

Mars is at its closest point to Earth tonight! (and will be up close and easy to spot all week!)

Watch the planet shine like a bright red star as it rises in the eastern sky shortly after sunset. It’s “opposition” technically isn’t until next week, but due to the elliptical orbits Mars is actually closer to Earth before the opposition.

Look towards the East Northeast when it's dark, just after sunset. Mars will already be above the horizon at this point and in the constellation Taurus.

As Mars comes into opposition, Earth will lie directly between Mars and the Sun, and the Red Planet will remain in the sky above the horizon for most of the night, making it an excellent time to view, clouds permitting.

Mars will reach opposition on 8 December 2022, when it will be at its brightest for the year, essentially creating a 'full' Mars. The Red Planet comes closest to Earth tonight. Mars will be just 81.45 million kilometres away from the Earth tonight.

Have fun star gazers!

We hope that you have all been well.

As the weather is so variable at the moment, please make sure that you come with a jumper (no hoodies!) and/or a coat to wear when it’s chilly out. As we are on top of a hill, we get a bit of a cold wind when riding in the arena!

A reminder that if you wish to cancel a lesson, we do require 48hrs notice or more in order to offer credit. Any later and we are unable to fill the slot with a rider for a catch up lesson or off the waitlist.

Finally, while the weather is showing on and off rain, we’d like to remind our riders that we still run lessons in the wind and rain provided there is not a risk to anyone’s safety. As an alternative for those who don’t want to ride, then we do offer stable management lessons in the warm barn.

Christmas Holidays

The dates are available to book on the system! Please check out our online site to book your spaces now!

We also have spaces for private 30min lesson on the week of Monday 12th December.

Barney passed the licence last week and had his first lesson at STE on Monday! An NSEA team also competed over the weekend and did well in jumping. The horse of the week is… Charlie!

NSEA News

This weekend we had several riders representing STE at Berkshire College of Agriculture for the County Show Jumping Qualifiers. Lilly S had a great round in the 80cm with Griff for a clear round but just outside the placings.

In the 90cm we had two teams entered. The team of Lulu S, Antonia S, Izzy L and Lilly S finished 7th with both Izzy and Antonia jumping clear rounds. The Blue Team of Chloe B, Amber B and Inde W didn’t have the easiest time as a team but Chloe did a brilliant round to finish 5th individually with a great clear round. Chloe B was the only representative in the 1m class and made it count with a super clear round to finish 3rd individually. Well done everyone!

This Week

In this first week of Advent, our minds turned wholeheartedly towards our preparations for the celebration of the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. In Chapel this week we reflected on the account from Luke’s Gospel where Jesus meets Zacchaeus. St Ignatius encourages us to enter into the account and ask which of the characters or groups we are most like. Perhaps we are like the crowd, hurt and wounded and all too quick to judge others. Perhaps we are just an ambivalent bystander, reluctant to enter the conversation out of a sense of fear. Perhaps we are like Zacchaeus, all too aware of the mess we have made, reluctant to face the consequence of our decisions or not quite knowing how to start again, but with a confident sense that in Jesus there is one who will understand. Or perhaps we are blessed to recognise, even in just small ways, that we have followed the example of Jesus as we have passed through the web of prejudice and frustration to see our neighbour face to face, to recognise the need in another person, and to reach out in welcoming compassion. Whichever character we associate with, it is a genuinely useful exercise that will help us enter into the core of what Advent is all about.

We received a most moving example of how this reflection and faith can transform lives, even in the most tragic of instances as we were privileged to welcome Margaret and Barry Mizen to the school. They spoke movingly of the tragedy of their son, Jimmy, who was murdered in 2008. Despite the horror of the events they experienced we were blessed to hear their passionate call to make that conscious decision to forgive and to remove the burden of anger and hate. As they shared their message with us, they helped us as a community to continue to strive to one shaped by forgiveness, peace and hope.
