Autumn Term

15 MARCH 2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020

Dear Parents, It barely seems possible that, having been back into the swing of things for a fortnight, this time next week we will be breaking up for the Easter holiday. We started the week treated to an absolutely incredible assembly, led by Ruby, our Senior Prefect (Pastoral). She spoke movingly and with conviction on the vital work of the Eco Council, and also offered us some useful and practical advice that we could all incorporate into our daily lives to aid in preserving the environment. I am considering offering Ruby the permanent job of delivering Monday morning assemblies because she knocked the spots off any of my offerings. My thanks to Georgia for playing the piano so beautifully while Saskia, Senior Prefect (Academic) led the reflection. Last Friday, I also received an email from a pupil who wished it to be announced on Monday that we remove the straps from any disposable face masks before throwing them away, because they represent a danger of entanglement to bird life. I feel the future is in safe hands. On Tuesday, I was walking round school at lunchtime only to discover Mr Stephens engaged in blowing something up, with members of Year 8 watching on - at a safe distance. This was a hangover from last week's Science Week as there was a need to blow things up in a covid -safe manner, requiring year group bubbles. Mr Stephens is also taking girls on a D of E expedition tomorrow - much-delayed, but finally given the all clear. After the explosion, I went into the lab to call in on the ducklings.

It is wonderful to hear the sounds of whistles, shouts and whoops from my study now that sporting activities are back in full swing, and the netball courts were absolutely chock-ablock at 5.15pm on Wednesday as I made my way home to log onto the Sixth Form parents' evening; my thanks to all who took part in this very positive occasion. I also spent a wonderful hour or so in boarding this week, taking the register, chatting to the girls and watching them leave to go to Into the Woods drama rehearsals, netball, and hockey. The Music Department was proud to present their Spring Soiree, via Teams, on Monday evening. We may only be here for three weeks before breaking up again, but it is truly like we have never been away. Dr Claire McShane

BOARDING NEWS This weekend we enjoyed making Lavender heat bags, one girl loved hers so much she wanted to give it to her mum for a Mother's Day gift. In the afternoon we had a delicious afternoon tea made by our lovely Bev; this is always a lovely treat for the girls as it brings them all together in the afternoon. Chocolate Easter Egg Cookies were made on Sunday with Miss Mentz. They were devoured as soon as they hit the table! Next weekend will be the last weekend on the hill so we will be starting to pack for the holidays. It has come round so quickly.

ENRICHMENT 7SA have been working hard on their Enrichment Projects this term, here are a few of their chosen topics...

Who could have predicted those strong winds last week?! We almost got blown over up here at equestrian. Good job to the riders who battled the weather in their lessons! We’re slowly getting the hang of our new booking system and have introduced those of you who are booked in to Easter to it. Next week we will email out about the summer term and lessons. We hope you’re as excited as we are to get back into the swing of things! If you don’t want to continue riding with us, or want a change of time or day, please let us know next week after we’ve contacted you. Our office staff are still on part-time furlough, so if you need to call the office please only do so on Mondays and Thursdays. We are trying to stay active on the emails Monday to Friday, but please bear with us if there is a slight delay.

Easter Pony Afternoons We have a few spaces left for our more advanced riders on our Pony Mornings. Mornings run from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Priced at £50 a session. Please contact the office for all Pony Day bookings, and payments will be made on our new system.

For those who have booked in, or are thinking about booking in for the Easter Holidays, please bring your own hat and boots to ride in as we are not lending out equipment until it is deemed safe to do so.

NSEA Reports Competitions will be opening from Monday 29th March, and we hope our NSEA riders are as excited as we are to get out and about competing for 2021! We have some riders already booked in for a show jumping competition on the 8th April at Felbridge Showgrounds. We wish them the best of luck!

Puffa Jackets Puffa jackets are still available to girls in Years 5 and up. Please contact h.wood@st-teresas.com if you would like to order one. What’s next? We’ve raised a fantastic amount of money towards our 2nd hand uniform cabin but there’s still some work to do to make it a reality…We’d love to hear your ideas so please do get in touch and get involved – we’re always recruiting new members! YEAR 7 SCIENCE CLUB Last week in science club we celebrated the return to school with a boomerang competition. The winner was Kelly C-H who had a very impressive flight. Our finalists were Katy H, Eris R, and Layla G, who also gave splendid shows. Special mention goes to Scarlett H and Jessica J who seemed very determined to assassinate Dr Evans and Ms Edwards!

This Week It is hard for us to imagine what it must have been like for Jesus as he approached the events of Holy Week. When we remember that he experienced all the same emotions and feelings that we have - but without sinning—we can recognise that the anticipation of this final week, and his execution by the authorities, must have filled him with terror. Yet, as was evident, as he hung on the cross, His thoughts were not for himself, but rather for those who were with him. So, at the Last Supper, he gives the words of reassurance, ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God still and trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s house, and I go to prepare a place for you.’ Even at the time of his greatest trial, he wishes to reassure his followers that his actions are for their salvation. And we should recall these words at those times when we face the greatest difficulties and greatest moments of sadness in our lives - yes, even when we face the death of a loved one. Jesus knew the sadness of the death of a friend. In the shortest verse in the Bible (John 11:35) we hear ‘Jesus wept’ when we heard the news. Yet in that sadness, he knew of the power of God to overcome event those moments when we ‘walk through the valley as dark as death. (Psalm 23:4) Indeed, this was the path that Jesus walked as he submitted to death, death on a cross. But by entering in to the very depths of human existence, and confronting that real horror, he overcame death. And through that death, gave us, and our loved ones, the sure hope life with him in those heavenly rooms he has prepared for us.
