BOARDING NEWS

On Saturday the boarders enjoyed ice skating at Guildford Spectrum. There was much excitement for the festive activity. We were particularly proud of all the girls who had never skated before -with a little encouragement and a snowman for support, these girls didn't want to leave the ice! After lots of laughs, everyone enjoyed a hot chocolate to warm up. Well done to all the girls!

After last weekend’s baking, the girls gave dumpling making a try. It was a bit tricky at first but they soon got the hang of it!

On Tuesday morning the girls woke to find treats in their shoes - a German tradition - St Nikolas; the girls love this tradition - some even put out riding boots for more treats.

This week the Year 7 boarders and flexi boarders hosted their Christmas 'Come Dine With Me' meal.

The tables were decorated with festive colours and crackers. A roast dinner with all the trimmings and a chocolate brownie pudding was enjoyed by all.

Deacon Simon and Mrs Cawley were invited to Judge along with Head Chef Gary and Mrs Wragg. The scores came in as 10, 9 and another 10! Well done girls, the planning, the music and your table manners were 'spot on'.

Certificates were then given to all the girls who gained Merits through the term, and eight Head of Boarding awards handed out too with a prize of a box of chocolates each. Fantastic end to the term.

Deacon Simon invited us after the celebrations to the Chapel for a candlelit Nativity and carols in different languages. We all prayed for peace for the New Year and placed a candle near the nativity. A beautiful end to our evening. Thank you, Deacon Simon.

The Sixth Form Events Committee organised some fun activities this week as the run up to Christmas is getting closer! On Wednesday during Form Time, we all made big snowflakes which we are going to put up in the Sixth Form Reading Room for our Christmas Party next week! The Sixth Form Events Committee also organised a Christmas ice skating trip to Somerset House in London. This took place on Wednesday evening, where everyone thoroughly enjoyed the skating and relished the festive spirit in London. We also organised gingerbread making on Thursday morning which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The whole of the Sixth Form decorated their gingerbread men before our lessons began and enjoyed a festive yummy treat before the day started.

This week the hard work of the EPQ students was revealed to an audience in the form of spectacular presentations. The EPQ is the Extended Project Qualification that takes about 18 months to complete. One of the elements of the project is to present months' worth of research in a 10-15 minute presentation whilst also being challenged with some random questions from the audience. This week's projects included whether neuromarketing is ethically justifiable, whether we can overcome untranslatability, how social media influences climate change views, an exploration of fast and slow fashion and kidney transplants. Amongst the audience were the new EPQ students in Year 12 who listened eagerly to what they will have to do next year. Well done to all the Year 13 EPQ students!

On Friday afternoon, the Head Girl Team recorded the second episode of the St T’s ‘Intellect Dissect’ podcast where we welcomed some more exciting guests. We all loved recording and being part of this exciting project, where we covered some very interesting topics and learnt lots of thrilling stories! We can’t wait to share the episodes with you shortly and the first episode will be available very soon!

The rest of the Sixth Form had their Enrichment Session during Period 5 on Friday where the Years 12 and 13 students split into integrated groups to do different activities. These included yoga, volunteering, wellbeing, current affairs and learning a new skill. It was great for both years to get together and enjoy their enrichment session!

I hope everyone has a restful weekend and I look forward to updating you on more Sixth Form fun next week!

We were delighted to welcome KBR Oneocean to our Eco meetings this half term where we have been investigating living systems, Climate, the Ocean and effect of Plastics and Pollution on the Marine Environment.

YEAR 7 SANTA FUN RUN

The Year 7 Santa Fun Run was a huge success on Wednesday afternoon. The girls all looked fantastic running around the countryside in their festive attire and the cookies and hot chocolate were well deserved at the end. Well done girls!

ROMEO & JULIET

Congratulations to our amazing performers, outstanding backstage crew, Hair, Make up, wardrobe and technical crew who performed to a sell out audience.

YEAR 8 TRIP TO HAMPTON COURT

Year 8 had a lovely trip to Hampton Court! They had a chance to look round the castle and see how Henry VIII lived, bringing to life this historical period. This was followed by an enjoyable ice skating session.

SCIENCE NEWS

Last week Years 10 - 12 have started studying the respiratory system. We had a go at building some very successful model lungs to simulate the effects the diaphragm has on the lungs.

‘PORTAL DE BELAN’

For Christmas time, the MFL Department has created a beautiful project involving several Year 9 students. Together they have created a 'Portal de Belen' (Nativity Scene) similar to the ones that usually decorate Spanish homes at this time of the year.

The students, using their scissors and coloured pencils, have put all their enthusiasm into this project.

All those who would like to visit the Belen can do so during break time and lunch time at Room 20.

YEAR 7 FORCES

This week 7SA have been investigating forces involved in floating and sinking. They had the opportunity to build their own rafts and competed to see which one could hold the biggest mass. We had joint winners - Piper and Erin! Well done ladies!

NSEA News

It was a busy weekend at Felbridge Show Ground for our NSEA riders this weekend, with lots learnt and plenty of good results too!

Saturday was the rescheduled county qualifiers: In the 70cm Pernille A had a great round to finish 8th!

The 80cm team of Lilly S, Amber B and Chloe B weren't placed but Lilly and Amber both jumped great clear rounds! Chloe B was also competing as an Individual in the 1m and jumped a clear round to finish just outside the placings.

Sunday was the Grassroots Regional Championships: We had a 50cm Team of Jess R, Florence B, Rosie C and Holly C who gave it a good go but it unfortunately wasn't their day. However, Holly C jumped a great clear round and would have been 3rd but she wasn't qualified for the individual final. We also had Abbie K and Pernille A competing in the 60cm as Individuals. They both jumped clear rounds in a class of over 50 riders. Huge congratulations to Pernille who won the class by over 2 seconds and Abbie finished in 9th!

This Week

In addition to all the other decorations slowly spreading across the school, this week we added the Crib to the Chapel.

The first crib was the creation of St Francis who famously enlisted the help of local villagers to reenact the nativity scene in their town square. This tradition proved so popular that you will now find crib scenes across the world.

Pope Francis has particularly encouraged us to make good use of the Christmas Crib, including during this time of Advent preparation. Following the lead of St Ignatius, he encourages us to enter into the scene in the crib, perhaps imagining ourselves as one of the main characters and to reflect on our experience and what the birth of the Christ-child means to us.

In Chapel this week we particularly focused on the role of the innkeeper who, according to tradition, was the one person who responded in compassion to Joseph and the all-too pregnant Mary when they could find no place to rest for the night on their arrival in Bethlehem.

We are challenged to do the same - amidst all the busy-ness of this season, we are reminded to set aside time to reflect on how we can make the Christ-child welcome in our lives, to set aside anything that is a distraction or obstacle to our celebration of Christmas, and to focus on what is at the heart of the seasons, and the heart of the crib; that is, the birth of the saviour who brings hope, peace, joy and love to the world.
