Autumn Term
30th NOVEMBER 2020 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020
Dear Parents, In terms of the marathon, we've entered the stadium and we're on the last lap! Michaelmas term is always a busy one and as we hurtle towards Christmas, it becomes exceptionally so. Despite covid, it is such a joy to be able to keep our wonderful tradition of Inter House Arts alive. It is genuinely the highlight of the entire school calendar. This year, girls will rehearse and film on Monday and Tuesday, then the Houses' most tech-savvy boffins will magically edit their efforts together, prior to the grand unveiling on Friday. Judging will take place as normal, and bubbles have, of course, been kept intact. This will be followed by Gary's epic Christmas lunch (in year groups rather than houses, for 2020 only), and a closing service. What a term it will have been. This week it was a pleasure to be able to help with rehearsals for our Carol Service, taking place on Tuesday 8th December, in the evening at 6pm, via Teams. This is, again, no small undertaking, requiring, at last count, 14 iPads (and equal number of chargers, extension cables and associated tech), 12 members of staff, choirs from five year groups, three pianos, one organ, and a partridge in a pear tree. I am a firm believer in extraordinary times calling for extraordinary measures, but all prayers to St Isidore of Seville gratefully received. The incredible Mrs Yalden and Deacon Simon produced a wonderful Advent Evensong this week, although all credit goes to members of the Year 7 branch of Schola Cantorum who sang simply beautifully. My congratulations to these superb choristers. It was a moment of calm and poise amongst the busy-ness. We also welcomed Year 9, albeit virtually, to their Options' Evening. This important milestone of choosing GCSEs was observed via Teams, and my thanks to Heads of Dept, Mr O'Farrell, Mr Pinks and all who attended or presented. The presentation and paperwork can all be found on the relevant Teams channel. My renewed thanks to FOST who organised an amazing online fair last week - it was such a pleasure browsing the site and marvelling at the scale and scope of what they also achieved to keep traditions going. Please may I remind parents that girls should wear their PE kit properly, that hoodies must be St Teresa's PE kit only (and of no other brand or school!), and the skort should be worn over leggings. Leg coverings in general should be navy blue (I'm flexible as to brand on this point). Full, smart school uniform for all girls on Friday 11th December, please - there are no PE lessons taking place. I do wish you all a wonderful weekend. Best wishes, Dr Claire McShane.

DESIGN A CHRISTMAS CARD Home Counties Carers are asking children between the ages of 5 and 16 to spread some Christmas cheer by sending in some card designs that they can then share with their community. Please email any entries to Mrs Menzies or hand in art-work to your Art Teachers by next Friday 11th December. .
BOARDING NEWS The boarders have been very busy baking more swiss rolls this past weekend - I think you'll agree they look fantastic! Great Job girls. They certainly are learning some cooking skills during this lockdown. All the boarders attended etiquette lessons with Dr McShane. The girls were taught how a formal table is set, how to use their cutlery correctly, and which way liquids and food are served. The girls were exceptionally engaged, and they will use this knowledge for life. On Sunday, the girls all enjoyed a Cream Tea with sandwiches and fresh cakes in the afternoon. Thank you, Bev, from Harrisons Catering! Next week will be our last weekend of the term. We are going to host 'Boarders’ Got Talent' on Saturday evening and the boarders will be packing on Sunday ready for the Christmas holidays.
MUSIC NEWS LJ Year 13 LJ is currently studying Music A level, and has a lead role in our musical production of Chicago. However, her musical tastes go far wider than the A level course. LJ has recently recorded a song in a London studio and it is now available on Spotify. It is called 'TheyThem'. Please see the link below to hear the song. LJ says that she plays the piano, drums, saxophone, guitar and also sings, but her main instruments are guitar and piano. "I have always enjoyed music, being creative and experimenting with different sounds. I haven't always been able to read music, but that hasn't stopped me creating." In the future LJ wants to continue writing and recording songs. Do have a listen and enjoy the link to 'TheyThem' below. https://open.spotify.com/track/3Cjg07uRQySb7nkQi8bIvW? si=Husnu6tSRCqsh_wrweGbZQ
Dear Parents/Guardians, This year has been a very difficult year for everyone due to covid and so we feel that it is more important than ever to participate in the shoe box appeal this year, in hope to make a child’s year a little bit better. The shoe boxes will be given to younger children who have not been as lucky as us this year and we thought it would be a great way to end the year and to put a smile on as many children’s faces as we can.
We would be extremely grateful if you could participate by creating a shoe box and bringing it to school so it can be given to children for Christmas. The shoe box can contain items such as: •Small teddy, a skipping rope, a ball, school supplies and hygiene items such as a toothbrush. Clothing items can be put in the box such as a scarf, gloves or hat. •Please do NOT put liquids , food, medicine, toothpaste, religious objects or any war related items such as army figures in the box Students have been given leaflets and labels to specify whether the box is for a boy or a girl and for which age. They are free to download to print and stick to the box on the following link https://www.samaritanspurse.org.uk/what-we-do/ operation-christmas-child/ operation-christmas-childresources/labels-leaflets/ Please wrap the box and the lid separately and please deliver the box to our chapel by Wednesday 9th December. We really would like as many of our students to participate and hit our target of 100 boxes. Thank you Pippa R and Leah H Year 12
YEAR 7 SCIENCE CLUB Last week we saw the beautifully decorated clowns and the results of additions to their bodies to assist with balancing. The girls showed their photographs of the clowns. Laila had a wonderfully colourful blue and red clown balancing on string. Eris balanced her clown on his shoulder which was brilliant! Katie had the most superb clown with spotty top and stripy trousers and managed to get her clown to balance on his tummy! First place goes to Katie for the combination of wonderful design and interesting balancing position. Joint second place goes to Eris and Laila as Eris had the most novel balanced position and Laila had a wonderful design. The task for this week was introduced: the girls have been set the task to make sustainable Christmas or tree decorations over the next two weeks. The girls were asked to avoid or minimise the use of plastics and were given lots of ideas of things found in nature to use. The girls will be judged on the variety of materials (dried fruits, cinnamon sticks, popcorn, pine cones, holly etc) as well as the overall decorative look. Judging to take place on the final Friday of the term.

We hope that you are all staying safe. A reminder that we will not be returning to our usual timetabled lessons until next term. When the lockdown ends, we will be organising ourselves to get ready for the adhoc and catch up lessons that are booked in for the week commencing Monday 7th December, and our lessons and activities for during the Christmas holidays. For those who are not able to ride, we have a list of all their missed lessons during this time which can be used towards bookings made in December and/or will be credited towards the Spring Term riding fees.
Christmas Pony Afternoons For those who have booked in, or are thinking about booking in for the Christmas Holidays, please bring your own hat and boots to ride in as we are not lending out equipment until it is deemed safe to do so.
Reminder on dates! Adhoc lessons: w/c Monday 7th December Spring Term Riding starts on: Monday 11th January
NSEA Reports Unfortunately all competitions have been cancelled for the duration of the lockdown.
We look forward to seeing the team back out in action in December!
This Week We are surrounded with all of the features of the festive season—trees, tinsel, turkeys!! These are all important, especially this year when we all need some cheering up! But this week we remembered that you can do all of that, but not actually be celebrating Christmas. As the saying goes, ‘Jesus is the reason for the season.’ In all the hustle and bustle, we are reminded to leave space for Jesus. And two ways to do this is to support our Shoebox Appeal and to join us for our Service of Nine Lessons and Carols!
