SIXTH FORM NEWS

Welcome back everyone and welcome to the beginning of the Summer Term, which will be a great one! I hope everyone had a fabulous Easter break and got some well deserved rest.

The Sixth Form kicked off the week with a very interesting talk given by Paul Mott, the Head of the Joint Extremism Unit at the Home Office. He gave his talk in the Year 12 Careers lesson about joining the Civil Service, answering our questions on different aspects and job opportunities offered and telling us about his work in counterterrorism. We learnt about different experiences and motives that might lead to a terrorism attack and how the Home Office attempts to prevent them. We really enjoyed it and it has opened up a new interest in the Civil Service for many of us.

On Tuesday evening, we had our first Explore Lecture of the term, with Hannah Fernando presenting ‘Real vs Fake - How do you really know?’. Hannah worked as the news editor for Heat magazine before securing her role editing Woman magazine. In the lecture, she explored the power of social media, both good and bad, looking at fake news and images that society is exposed to, comparing them to reality and asking whether society would continue to seek perfection even if we were more honest. Thank you Hannah for such an interesting talk!

During Sixth Form assembly on Thursday morning, I announced to Years 12 and 13 that our 2023 Sixth Form Summer Ball will be held at De Vere Horsley Estate. Within an assembly last half term, the whole of the Sixth Form voted for their preferred Ball venue and so it was very exciting to find out the winning venue, which they had been waiting patiently for! I then went through other details such as the date, timings and logistics with everyone, which made everyone even more excited and we all can't wait for the Ball this Summer!

And finally, as it is the start of a new half term, this Friday the Sixth Formers will start their new enrichment opportunities including yoga, current affairs, learning a new skill, wellbeing and volunteering. We are excited to take part in enrichment, it is a nice break at the end of our busy week.

I hope everyone has a great bank holiday weekend and I look forward to writing to you next week.

The boarders all arrived back ready for a new exciting term. They were all so pleased that there was a takeaway pizza to eat at supper thank you FOST for our treat!

With two Bank Holidays and the Coronation to celebrate we have lots of activities to do with the girls.

This weekend we are pottery painting and going to Harry Potter studios.

FERIA DE ABRIL

This week has been an exciting one for the MFL department, as they have been connecting live with the 'Feria de Abril' in Seville (Spain). The students have had the unique opportunity to practice their Spanish language skills with native speakers during the live video chats, whilst also learning new vocabulary related to the festival.

They have been able to witness the vibrancy of the festival, and it has been a fantastic way to immerse them in the culture and language of this country.

The 'Feria de Abril' is one of the most significant festivals in Spain, and it is celebrated from 22nd April to 29th April. This event is full of colour, joy and flamenco dancing, making it an excellent opportunity for the students to

CCF FLYING AT RAF BENSON

CCF cadets from both Cranmore and St Teresa’s had the opportunity to fly Grub Tutors when they went to RAF Benson during the Easter break. They all had an amazing time.

MATHS MASTER CLASS

A selection of Year 5 students from St Teresa’s, Cranmore, St Martin’s and Eastwick visited St Teresa’s for another Royal Institute Mathematics Masterclass on the 28th of April. Organised by the Sixth Form students at St Teresa’s, the primary school pupils arrived in the library to begin learning about probability in a unique and exciting session.

Masterclasses are a series of workshops where students can explore mathematics and computer science outside the confines of the classroom, through hands-on extracurricular workshops. In collaboration with the Royal Institute, St Teresa’s has provided a handful of gifted mathematicians in local primary schools an opportunity to expand their current level of understanding into topics beyond their curriculum.

The primary students found themselves making friendships with others as they were guided to their first activity whilst waiting for the remaining schools. Kirsten S and Louise B took centre stage introducing the topic: Probability! Their exciting twist on the topic instantly captivated the engagement of all mini-mathematicians, starting with some common misconceptions. As they progressed to constructing their own dice from card, an experiment took place as pupils studied whether the hypothetical probability matched the relative frequency.

EURO SPACE CENTRE

The girls have had a busy few days at the Euro Space Centre.

In white lab coats the girls were "building a satellite" using microcontrollers and digital sensors connected with WiFi modules. The exciting climbing wall was a microgravity simulator where the girls had to repair a satellite by adding solar panels and repairing or replacing damaged circuitry whilst experiencing zero gravity.

Other activities included a three-axis rotation simulator, a remotecontrol rover task on the Mars surface and a big space mission simulation where the girls took on specific roles in mission control as well as pilot and mission commander in a shuttle simulator.

EXPLORE LECTURE: “REAL VS FAKE”

We were delighted to welcome Hannah Fernando to hear her talk on The Power of Social Media.

Hannah was the news editor of Heat magazine, working her way up to edit the title. She has worked on numerous women's lifestyle magazines and currently edits Woman magazine.

Hannah's lecture was "Real vs Fake - how do you really know?"

She talked about how there is so much on social media to look at. We hear about fake news, we know that images are filtered, perhaps we even do that ourselves. But, what's the truth? How do we know what to believe?

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR

Darcey took part in the Young Entrepreneurs Business Fair in Guildford on Saturday 15th April.

She was up against 44 other young entrepreneurs who were all showcasing their businesses. She was chosen by the BBC to be interviewed live on radio minutes before the fair started. Four prizes were up for grabs and after being interviewed by two separate teams of judges she scooped the top prize of “Judges’ Choice.” The feedback included, “amazing products, incredible stand, prices are clear and company branding superb.” Well done Darcey.

She will be selling her pottery at King Fest on Friday 5th May.

DSM ZOOM PARENT WORKSHOP

Subject title: I Wish I’d Known – a workshop for parents and carers on young people, drugs and decisions from the DSM Foundation

We would like to invite you to a drug and alcohol awareness workshop by webinar for our parents and carers by the drug education charity: Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation. This will be held on Monday 15th May from 6.308.00pm and led by Asha Fowells and Anjali Jayanty.

The workshop will involve finding out about:

· levels of young people’s exposure to drugs and alcohol – what, where, when and how

· what young people, and their parents and carers, need to know about the risks of drugs and alcohol

· factors that affect young people’s decisions about drugs and alcohol, including teenage brain development

· how to have effective conversations with your child, and practical suggestions for what you can do to support them to stay safe

· where to go for more information and support.

CCF SUMMER CAMP

This year’s Summer Camp will run from Sunday 9 July until Saturday 15 July. Places are limited and will be awarded on progress throughout the year in CCF. Please contact m.stephens@st-teresas.com if you would like your daughter to take part.

BOUGH BEECH RESERVOIR TRIP

The Chemistry Department has arranged for all of Year 10 to visit Bough Beech reservoir and treatment works. This trip is a great opportunity for pupils to gain a better insight into potable water, how it is produced, how much energy is involved and the importance of conserving water. It directly supports the GCSE curriculum and provides an opportunity to see how the science works. The trip will take place on either Tuesday 27th June or Tuesday 4th July, and your daughter will be informed nearer the time on which day she will be attending.

SKI TRIP

Amadé is a huge ski expanse made up of 29 resorts, bringing guaranteed snow (highest lift 3016m) The huge Salzburger Sportwelt resort, boasting 760km of piste, is considered the best ski area for schools. The trip is open to all in current Years 7-12, first-time or experienced skiers. There are 40 places available on the trip. The trip will be running from 23-29 March 2024 (the first week of the Easter holiday) meaning the girls will have 5 days of skiing / 5 hours a day. A letter will have been sent out with a booking form. It is on a first-come, firstserved basis so be quick!

YEAR 7 DRAMA FESTIVAL

The Year 7 Drama Festival will be taking place Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th May. Pupils will have the opportunity to finalise any technical and last-minute rehearsals before being able to perform their pieces on the Wednesday evening on Mairlot Hall stage. This has always been a brilliant opportunity for pupils and one from which they will learn an great deal. This will be an informal in-house event and an opportunity for all of the Year 7 girls to perform in a production without the pressure of a public audience, but this will of course affect the pick up times for pupils on both nights.

On Tuesday 9th pick up will be 19:30 from Mairlot Hall and on Wednesday 10th pick up will be at 20:00 with dinner being provided on both evenings. No other extracurricular activities will be running on these evenings to ensure that pupils will be able to attend.

YEAR 7 TRIP TO HAMPTON COURT PALACE

Year 7 will be going to Hampton Court Palace at the end of exams week.

We will be partaking in three educational sessions while at the palace:

• Henry To Mary: A Religious Rollercoaster (which will supplement the history lessons taking place in school)

• Tudor Kitchens revealed

• Wellbeing: exploring historic gardens

The trip will take place on Friday 9th June with drop off and pick up times remaining the same. Girls should be in full school uniform for the trip. A packed lunch will be provided, consisting of a sandwich, drink and piece of fruit. YEAR 9 CEMA TRIP

A trip is being organised for Year 9 to visit The Centre for Experimental Military Archaeology for the end of exams week.

CEMA was established in 2021 in Detling and aims to become a site for research, education and film. They have recreated an authentic World War One trench and the site is also a popular film location, with the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 choosing to shoot on site.

We will be partaking in five educational sessions while at the site:

• Trench tour

• Medicine in the trenches

• The Blitz and RAF Detling

• Dressing ‘Tommy’ – weapons, uniform and equipment

• WWII Home front

ECO COUNCIL NEWS

Following our presentation from the speakers from SKORI at Bristol University they are running a Children's Climate Challenge and would love for our students to take part!

We want to hear from YOU.

Direction is more important than effort and we want YOU to help steer the global response to climate change.

What do you want the world to look like in 2050? What will it sound like? What will cities look like? How will people treat each other? How will people treat the planet, plants and animals?

Please submit your creative depictions of the future you hope for with your first name, age and nationality. This could be a sentence, a poem, a story, a picture, a painting, a photo, a collage, an animation; anything creative! It could even be an equation or computer software. Please send your entries to Mrs Menzies by 30th April.

VALUES WEEK HISTORY COMPETITION

The school values are Faith, Character, Community, Compassion and Intellect. As you know, this year the value we are focusing on is Intellect. Participating in this competition will broaden your historical knowledge while also developing important skills of reflection, research, curiosity and resilience.

This is an extra-curricular project, which means you will have to find time for it outside of lessons/clubs. You will have a set amount of time to complete the project. During Values Week, your entry will be displayed, and you will have an opportunity to showcase your work to the rest of the school.

This Week

It was good to gather together and to continue our celebrations of the season of Easter. (Remember Easter lasts 50 days, so keep that supply of Easter Eggs coming!!)

In Chapel this week we reflected on one of the encounters that the disciples had with the Risen Lord., as we reflected on the Journey to Emmaus (Luke 24).

The account reminds us of the two disciples who had fled Jerusalem in the early hours of Easter Sunday. As they walked the long journey, dejected and empty at the news of the crucifixion of Jesus, an unexpected stranger joined them and explained how it was always necessary for the Christ to suffer in order to win his great victory over death. Only at the last moment, as Jesus breaks bread at their evening meal, do they recognise that it truly is him.

Perhaps, for us this week, we can remember three aspects of this story. Firstly, the two disciples were utter heart-broken at the news of Jesus. All their hopes had been dashed. In desperation, they were heading off in the absolute opposite direction that Jesus had shown. It can be reassuring that scripture presents us with models of discipleship that so often mirror our own experience.

But the second point is all the more significant as Jesus enters into that journey with them. With typical gentleness and compassion he accompanies these two disciples, even as they head in the wrong direction. Despite their confusion, Jesus explains the scriptures to them, and plants the seeds of hope in their hearts once again. They had been slow to recognise Jesus and slow to understand, but by entering into their journey, Jesus’ presence begins to transform the situation.

Finally, we have the image, so familiar to us from the frontispiece of the altar in the Chapel, of Jesus breaking the bread and the disciples coming to the realisation that Jesus has been with them throughout the journey. This can be what our journey through life is like. We live with the myth that we can make it on our own, relying, so we think, on our own initiative. Often we only recognise in retrospect the guiding hand of God in our lives as he gently supports and directs us in the right way.

As we continue our celebration of Easter let us pray that we would recognise that presence of God in our lives and cherish those moments when, like those disciples, our hearts burn within us as we come to see Jesus walking along side us.

There is still time to sign up to our drills and skills event on Sunday 14th May! This is a FREE event open to all players from Years 2-11 and is a great opportunity to get on court and have a hit with our fabulous coaches. There will be a BBQ running at the clubhouse for players and parents to enjoy!

A new pony arrived at STE over Easter! His name is King and he passed his council licence on Tuesday so will start to be slowly introduced to lessons. He is in the stable opposite Charlie and is very friendly so feel free to say hello!

STE had a variety of things going on over the Easter break, including hacking, lessons and Pony Mornings! This meant that the ponies did a range of activities to keep them fit and having fun. They also introduced a Day Camp and an Introduction to Dressage afternoon, which the ponies and riders enjoyed a lot!

Ponies and staff are happy to be back in the school term. The horse of the week is… King!

NSEA News

On the last weekend in March, Lilly S went to BCA for the JwS (Jumping with Style) qualifiers. She had an amazing day winning both the 80cm and the 90cm, winning the 90cm by over 13 penalties!

Over the 1st/2nd April weekend, our grassroots riders had some great results at Coombelands. In the 60cm Jess R was 6th and Rosie C was 9th, both with double clears. In the 70cm the team of Jess R, Rosie C and Abbie K took a great win, with Rosie finishing 3rd and Jess 9th, qualifying the team for the Grassroots Champs at Hickstead in August!
