The trip began at a quite frankly uncivilised hour. I doubt any of us would have got up at 1.45am for much else. But despite all that, and Mrs Randall’s unfortunate incident shutting her fingers in a window up in boarding, we were off to a brisk start.
The next few hours on coaches and trains flew by, until we found ourselves early in the morning, walking through the deserted streets of Rome on our way to our first big destination – the Colosseum. The girls were genuinely impressed by the scale and grandeur of the building, and with crowds of tourists milling round it was easy to imagine ourselves back in the First Century as the trumpets sounded and the gladiatorial games began.
Once we had explored the nooks and crannies of ancient Rome’s premier sporting venue it was time to pass by the arches of Constantine and Titus and climb the Palatine Hill. Even in their current, very dilapidated, state, the remains of the Palace of Augustus and the Circus Maximus where the chariot races took place were breathtakingly impressive. To round out our first day of visits we descended into the Roman Forum, where the girls were surrounded by temples, court buildings, shops and monuments. A quick lecture on evidence for Roman dentistry later and we were back to the hotel for dinner and sleep.
On Saturday we spent our time in the Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica, marvelling at the treasures the Catholic Church has acquired over the centuries. We passed by the Tomb of Scipio Barbatus, the Laocoon statue, Nero’s Porphyry bath and hundreds more pieces in awe, before the tapestry and geographical mural galleries led us to the Sistine Chapel. Leaving before our necks were too tired from all that looking up, we checked out the inside of St. Peter’s, to the accompaniment of a sextet of nuns singing Ave Maria over the speaker system.
Stopping briefly to see the chapel to St. Therese in the Church of St. Mary of the Angels and Martyrs (or, the Baths of Diocletian as we classicists tend to know it), we all piled on to the coach once more to head for the Bay of Naples. Sunday was our day to climb up Vesuvius and take in the views, while Monday saw us visit Pompeii and Herculaneum to get as close as we could to life in a Roman town. It was very interesting, seeing how the grandiose architecture of Rome itself was recreated on a much more human scale here, and everyone had a soft spot for the House of Caecilius Iucundus, star of our much beloved Cambridge Latin Course (sadly his wife Metella was not in residence in the atrium, as the course had promised us she would be).
Welcome back! This past Sunday we welcomed all the girls back into house for the final half term of the school year. This week the boarders have been working very hard studying and taking their exams which will soon be wrapping up. This weekend we have an exciting trip planned, we are headed into London to watch “Mamma Mia the Musical”, a spot of shopping around Covent Garden and finishing with some dinner.

Mirja joined Charterhouse Capital Partners, a UK Private Equity Firm in 2015. She is Charterhouse’s ESG Director. In 2019, Mirja also gained a Certificate in Business Sustainability Management from the Institute for Sustainability Leadership at the University of Cambridge. Mirja's lecture will cover:
the system pressures we are facing (climate, biodiversity)
the UN Sustainable Development Goals as global blue print to achieve system change
if you own a business, what this means across E (environment), S (social) and G (governance)
what role do governments, households and consumers play?
We have been working closely with KBR who have been leading sessions on sustainability and our ocean environment. They have planned a ‘One Ocean field trip’ to Brighton on 22nd June. Throughout the day, they plan to visit the Sea Life aquarium and host a beach clean-up.
We would be grateful if you could sign and return the consent form by Thursday 15th June to indicate whether you are willing for your daughter to participate in this trip.

Our third episode gives an insight about what it is like to be a DEI Ambassador at our school. The DEI Ambassadors share information about some of the exciting projects that they are undertaking, including the collaboration between the Performing Arts, PSHE and DEI departments to explore the themes within Hairspray the musical. Miss Burgess, our DEI Officer, speaks about the disability fashion design project that her team are working on, as well as their work with local charity Cherry Trees. We hope that you enjoy listening to this episode and gaining an insight into the work of the DEI team at St Teresa's.

We invite you to a parent seminar by David Leech on mental health and wellbeing. David Leech will be giving corresponding talks to Years 7 and 10 on the same day. In this talk, we will explore mental health and wellbeing, and what parents can do to help their daughters have happy, healthy relationships with others. David will cover how to identify specific warning signs, key terminology, new data and wellbeing strategies.

Teresa Baron will be giving a parent seminar on relationships and sex education. Teresa has already delivered ageappropriate sessions to Years 8-13 this year and the response has been very positive so far. In this session, we will explore the importance of healthy relationships, also focusing on child sexual exploitation and mental health. Information on your daughter’s relationships and sex education programme at St Teresa’s will be provided and there will be the opportunity to discuss this further .

Our annual Values Week pilgrimage walk along the stunningly beautiful North Downs Way from St Teresa’s to Guildford Cathedral will take place on Thursday 22 June. We will meet at school at 6:45am for a 7:00am departure and will return by coach in time for the buses.
As you are aware, each academic year we focus on one of our values, and this year it has been the Year of Intellect.
In support of this years Value, each Year 7 pupil has completed a Floreat Project and we are delighted to invite you to view the fruits of their labours at our Floreat Festival on Monday 19th June. This will take place for parents in the Sports Hall between 16:15 and 17:00 and will form a vital part of our Values Week celebrations.
The global round of the World Scholar’s Cup is being held in London, at the Bloomsbury Theatre at the University College of London from the 26 to 30 July 2023. If you would like your daughter to participate in the London global round, please could you complete the consent form emailed out previously.

We have been invited to attend a Workshop with Joe’s Buddy Line on Thursday 13 July 2023 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. This is the second workshop in the series and we will be looking at Coping Not Overwhelmed, this will support parents to help their children/our students to help manage their workloads and pressures of exams, tests, everyday life.

A week after the great feast of Pentecost, celebrated during half-term, we have the feast of the Blessed Trinity. The truth is that many people shy away from discussing, or even thinking about, the Trinity as they fear that it can tie themselves and others up in impenetrable intellectual knots.. It can be easier to say what the Trinity is rather than enter into an explanation peppered with errors.
We often call the Trinity a ‘mystery’ and we need to remember that this means, ‘something that is revealed bit by bit’ - that is, not something that remains hidden for ever. So perhaps it is worth remembering that the Trinity was first and foremost something that God has revealed to us. For example, at Jesus’ own baptism we hear the voice of the Father, revealing Jesus as his beloved Son, with the physical manifestation of that love descending from heaven to earth with the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove.
Jesus himself declared, ‘Father, into your hands I commend my Spirit.’ Again, the Trinity there before our eyes. Indeed, Jesus’ final command was to ‘Go make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’
Jesus revealed to us the very essence of God as a community of love, for that, as St John reminds us, is what God is, ‘God is love!’ St Augustine reminds us that for this to be true there must be one who loves, that is, the Father, one who is beloved, that is, the Son, and the love that they share, that is, the Spirit.
In perhaps the most famous depiction of the Trinity, the icon writer Rublev presents the Trinity seated around the sides of the table. This, of course, leaves one place free. We are invited to enter into that community of love. Perhaps, each time we begin our prayer with the Sign of the Cross, we can remember this invitation.

We hope that you have had a good half term.
Please make sure that your child puts on sun cream for riding and a top that covers their shoulders. It has been very warm in the afternoons and evenings recently, and it feels even hotter when riding in the arena!
If there are any school trips or events that your daughter will be doing instead of riding, then please let the office know by phone or by email. As if you wish to cancel a lesson, we do require 48hrs notice or more in order to offer credit. Any later and we are unable to fill the slot with a rider for a catch up lesson or off the waitlist.

Over the half term there were lots of pony days and lessons with the beautiful weather. The staff also had a lot of fun playing rounders on the Saturday!
