SIXTH FORM NEWS

Happy Friday to all! A plethora of events and excitement have occurred since I last wrote to you.

Firstly, we want to offer our biggest congratulations to the Year 13s who finished their A Levels this week! You have worked so hard and now you can finally rest and enjoy the summer ahead.

Values week has dominated the Sixth Form this week, with great efforts and enthusiasm being shown by all of our Sixth Formers, so I'll hand over to our fabulous Values Prefect, Q, to tell you all about it:

"Values week has been an exciting, joyous experience for the whole school – or at least I hope it has! My fantastic team – Amily Z, Anna H and Carlie L – and I organised and assisted with loads of fun activities that all were able to get involved with. Notably, there were the assemblies, given by a member of the Sixth Form every morning, and they were all wonderful. I’d like to thank Julia T, Sophie R, Ariella W, and Anna H, Poppy M, and Carlie L for their delightful assemblies. There was the scrabble competition, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part, and we (the Values Team) were more than happy to help organise it with Mr Neate, Mrs Edwards and Mrs Stubbs. Finding Neo was a great success (we are pleased to report that he really was found) and was enjoyed by all participants; even by the evil Dr Poffley and his minions, Julia T, Ariella W, Jadwiga K-L, Maria HVO, Isabella Z and myself. Our War and Peace readathon and Breakeoke has left a significant portion of the Sixth Form voiceless, although none of us are too distraught about it. Finally, I'd like to thank Sophie R, Corellia W and Georgina S for taking part in the quiz so enthusiastically. And thank you all for making values week such a grand success!"

On Thursday, ten Sixth Formers, along with many Year 10s, four teachers and Neo, undertook the annual Pilgrimage to Guildford Cathedral. We set off at 7 am and walked nearly 20 km, making sure to stop along the way to virtually join assembly and Breakeoke. We had such a great time and learned the value of soaking in the wonderful nature around us with friends. Thank you Mrs Cawley and Deacon Simon for organising it.

VALUES WEEK!!

BOARDING NEWS

Following the lovely weather this past week, the girls went out for a trip to Brighton to enjoy the sunshine and sea air. They got to walk along the pier trying sticks of rock and going on lots of fun rides while finishing the trip on

activities planned for each day.

Monday - we did bead collecting whilst walking as many times as possible around the school field; the longest bead collection won a prize - Well done Adriana!

Tuesday - we played games outside and had fun chalk drawing whilst listening to music.

Wednesday - The boarders have proved that they all have a very competitive side, with a two hour game of capture the flag !

Thursday - Lots of girls competed in the National Boarding Week’s Bake Off. There were a variety of cakes including coffee and chocolate heart cake; grape and pineapple sponge with Oreo icing and, a rainbow cake with a surprise filling.

FLOREAT FESTIVAL

As part of the year of Intellect, Year 7 have been working towards their Floreat Projects every Thursday since October. Each pupil was challenged to create a project about something that interested them. Floreat means “To FLOURISH” evoking the idea that the girls were growing their passion by taking part in this journey of intellectual discovery. The finished projects were displayed to an audience consisting of Year 6 pupils and parents on Monday. It was wonderful to see the sheer variety of the projects, mirroring the unique qualities and personalities of all our girls. The smorgasbord of topics included, but was not limited to, reptiles, fashion, dogs, snakes, Hong Kong, photography, Jamaica, sport, stationery and Harry Potter. Every pupil in Year 7 should feel very proud of their accomplishment!

FINDING NEO

Infamy! Calumny! Raise the hue and cry! Some dastardly charlatan has dognapped our precious Neo, and the blackguard is holding him hostage!

That was how we all came into assembly on Wednesday morning. Mrs Cawley was beside herself, and as the day wore on the sense of foreboding only got worse. In the evening, though, our meretricious mountebank revealed his awful plan in full. Dr. Poffley’s evil twin (or maybe it was just the real Dr. Poffley in a fake moustache who can say?) had locked the dog up, with the aim posting him to Siberia so we’d never see poor Neo again. But the villain had given us one last chance to save our furry friend!

Six fiendish puzzles lay before the hopeful teams of children and adults. Solve these, and the code to the lock on Neo’s cage was revealed. In the science labs Garlic led eager teams through his complex Physics based escape room. In the chapel Deacon Simon challenged one and all to follow the lives of our House Saints and build up a composite picture. In the sports hall Miss Kay put girls and parents alike through their paces, and in John Bosco House Ms. McDowell challenged them to a session of frantic code-breaking. came to the library, setting them a sequence of rhyming riddles concealed in the books. By the time everyone had returned to the dining Neo was being held. Fortunately the walls were now decorated with profiles of our staff, and a further “Guess Who” puzzle pointed teams to the first clue in a sequence that eventually led to his location. A mad scramble ensued, from the pavilion to the fountain to the gazebo to the daffodils. The chase ended at the old ice house, where Neo was found, safe and well!

To signal this joyous reunion the fastest team rushed to the chapel again, where the bells were rung in joy and evil Dr. Poffley fled in thwarted frustration. A prize of sweets for the girls and wine for the adults was shared out, and everyone left knowing that disaster had been averted.

The last we heard from evil Dr. Poffley he had barricaded himself in the linen cupboard, and even now he plots his revenge. But with such quick-thinking girls and parents on hand, he doesn’t stand a chance of pulling the wool over our eyes next time!

CALCULATOR CHALLENGE

As part of Values Week, Year 7 were challenged to complete a series of calculator crunching tasks. One of these was a story involving two people going to a farm, however, all the key information was given as a tricky calculation to input involving roots, powers and fractions! Eventually, we found Liz and Bob saw some geese on their trips. Other tasks included problem solving relating to prime numbers, fractions and ratios. All Year 7 students were encouraged to take a step outside their comfort zone in the use of their intellect.

ECO COUNCIL TRIP BRIGHTON

The Eco Council had a wonderful day in Brighton visiting Sea Life and finding out all about their conservation work followed by a litter pick on the beach as part of the

WOODLANDS SCHOOL CONCERT

Some pupils will be performing in an informal music concert lead by St Teresa's at Woodlands School, Leatherhead on Friday 30th June.

We will leave during the school day at 11:00 and will return by 12:30, taking a school bus there and back. We will be back in time for lessons and school lunch. Your daughter will be expected to catch up on any work missed. May we ask you to email p.cantwell@st-teresas.com or, alternatively, you can return the reply slip emailed previously, before Monday 26th June, indicating whether you give permission for your daughter to attend.

YEARS 7-13 ART SCHOLARS’ FESTIVAL DAY

The Art Department would like to invite all Art Scholars to attend our annual Arts Festival Day on Friday 30 June. St Teresa’s will be hosting two visiting artists, who will be delivering both painting and textile workshops throughout the day.

The workshops will start at 8:55 and will conclude at 16:15, allowing all pupils to have the opportunity to participate in both the painting and textile workshops. All works produced during the festival will be exhibited at the forthcoming Art Private View, which will be held on Tuesday 4 July from 18:00-20:00 in Mairlot Hall.

WORLD SCHOLAR’S CUP GLOBAL ROUND

The global round of the World Scholar’s Cup is being held in London, at the Bloomsbury Theatre at the University College of London from 26 to 30 July 2023. If you would like your daughter to participate in the London global round, please could you complete the consent form emailed out previously.

JOE’S BUDDY LINE WORKSHOP

We have been invited to attend a Workshop with Joe’s Buddy Line on Thursday 13 July 2023 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. This is the second workshop in the series and we will be looking at Coping Not Overwhelmed, this will support parents to help their children/our students to help manage their workloads and pressures of exams, tests, everyday life. All parents are welcome, we look forward to seeing you.

This Week

It has been fantastic participating in a wide range of activities as part of Values Week, this year focusing on the Value of ‘Intellect’.

On Thursday a group of 36 students along with 3 staff and a Governor walked the 12.75 miles from the school to Guildford Cathedral as part of our annual Pilgrimage Walk. We set off at the crack of dawn so that we could cover the first few miles in the cool of the day. We paused to join the daily assembly via Teams, and similarly participated enthusiastically in Breakeoke before heading up St Martha’s Hill and beginning the descent into Guildford. It was a beautiful day, with our thoughts and prayers lingering in our hearts as we walked along!

Whilst Years 10 and 12 walked, our Year 7 Chaplaincy Team attended the annual celebration of Catholic education at the Good Shepherd Service, this year held in Arundel Cathedral. This was a particularly special occasion as it coincided with the 150th Anniversary of the Cathedral. The Team along with pupils from the Prep School and Cranmore, represented the Trust and were warmly greeted by Bishop Richard as he received our offering of a woolly sheep in our school colours and a sash reminding everyone of our school values.

On Thursday we also celebrated Evensong for Values Week. We reflected on the intellectual giant, St Thomas More, whose feast day was celebrated on Thursday. We recalled how he employed his vast intellect, an intellect that informed his deep love of God, to stand up and confront even the King. We recalled that we celebrate this great individual in More House, our Science and Geography block. He is certainly a fantastic model of how we combine faith and intellect to become the people we are called to be.

We hope that you have had a good week.

Please make sure that your child puts on sun cream for riding and a top that covers the shoulders. It has been very warm in the afternoons and evenings recently, and it feels even hotter when riding in the arena!

If there are any school trips or events that your daughter will be doing instead of riding, then please let the office know by phone or by email. If you wish to cancel a lesson, we do require 48hrs notice or more in order to offer credit. Any later and we are unable to fill the slot with a rider for a catch up lesson or off the waitlist.
