SIXTH FORM NEWS

Hello everyone. I hope you all had a great week!

This week has been another one of those busy weeks as we settle back into normal school life after an extremely eventful Values Week.

Nine brave Year 12s set off on Gold D of E on Wednesday afternoon, heading to Snowdonia for five nights of camping and four days of walking. We are so proud of them all and are looking forward to welcoming them back next week.

We are all very excited for the Year 12 survival BBQ next Wednesday to celebrate surviving our first year of A Levels, and we are looking forward to Giving Day next week, when the Sixth Form will be running a ‘sponge the teacher’ stall. Thank you so much to all the teachers who have volunteered to be sponged!

Many of the Sixth Formers are very busy at the moment, heading to Open Days as we narrow down our university options. Good luck to everyone as you make your decisions!

Corellia, our fantastic Academic Prefect, is currently working on the latest edition of her termly Aspirations letter. I asked what we can look forward to and she said “since the last issue of the Aspirations Collection, work has been underway to bring the Sixth Form the summer edition. This issue includes a virtual bookshelf and so be sure to have a look when it is released! The academic committee are really excited to bring this edition to you and to hear what you think.”

Last week the final Maths Masterclass ran for the Year 5 students. Sophie R has been part of this project for this academic year and shared with us her experience “the sessions this year have been very informative for both the pupils and the A Level students who have been running them. The Year 12 students have learnt teamwork, leadership and communication skills. We have all enjoyed running the sessions and hope that the Year 5 students enjoyed attending them just as much. Thank you to all of the students who ran the masterclasses with myself, Emily E, Ariella W, Kirsten S, Louise B, Coco Z and Amily Z.”

BOARDING NEWS

This past week has been a very busy week for boarding with the BSA National Boarding Week. Each day the boarders have been involved in all kinds of fun activities. Boarding week really brought all the houses together in a range of different ways, including a competitive round of capture the flag and Mexican game prisoner. With values week in the day school, we saw the boarders' talents come to light with their skills in busking and dancing. We are very proud of them.

Saturday was an early start for the boarders with all the girls participating in sports day. Many girls came back with lots of medals.

On Sunday the boarders went into Guildford for the day to shop and hang out. For some of our Spanish and Mexican boarders this will be their last English shopping trip with boarding before they head home. This week is very exciting as we look forward to helping our Years 11 and 13 girls get ready for prom and are so excited to see them all dressed up and celebrating their achievements.

Friday will be boarders’ prizegiving where we appreciate all that the boarders contribute to our boarding community. And we can’t wait for the weekend activity this weekend as we will be going to the waterpark at Thorpe Park.

YEAR 11 SUMMER BALL

MATHS MASTERCLASS

During this academic year, the Year 12 Maths A Level students have worked alongside the Royal Institute to deliver a series of masterclasses to Year 5 pupils from schools across Surrey. The Year 12 students were lucky to have Rachel Doris from the Royal Institute in to show them how to run the classes. The first session was led by Dr Jenny Sharp from Plymouth University, where she discussed counting in base 8 instead of base 10. This allowed the pupils to discover a new form of counting. The following session was run by Sophie R, Ariella W and Emily E, where they delivered a session on fractions using mixtures of coloured water to demonstrate the varying shades of purple. The third session was run by Louise B and Kirsten S on probability, a relatively new concept which the pupils highly enjoyed. The made their own dice and conducted a range of probability experiments to understand relative frequency. The penultimate masterclass was run by Grace J, Coco Z and Amelie Z, who led the students through a series of cipher and code breaking tasks, with a prize at the end. The final masterclass took place last week and was led by Alison Eves from the Royal Institute which was based on Maths in Space. The pupils used scaled measurements to get a glimpse into just how big our solar system is.

Overall, this was a highly rewarding experience for both Sixth Formers and Year 5 budding mathematicians, as both groups have gained many valuable new skills. In particular, the Year 12 mathematicians led a series of outstanding masterclasses and should be congratulated on running such a highly successful programme.

NEW DAWN AFRICAN GIRL SUMMER 2023 UPDATE

Last year during Values Week the Senior School held a ‘Walk for Water’ event to raise funds for the New Dawn African Girl charity in Isiolo, Kenya. It is our pleasure to now share with you how the monies raised were spent. We are excited to share that a safe and reliable water source has now been established at the Prayer and Rescue Centre site. The monies raised were used to dig a borehole, construct a water tower, buy a water tank and solar pump. The project has also enabled the charity to start their own shamba (vegetable plot) on site too.

Your kind donations have made a real difference to these girls’ lives!

This year during Values Week we held a ‘War and Peace’ readathon. We would like to use the monies raised from the event to purchase reading books for the nine girls currently residing at the centre. Currently we have raised £22 but would like to raise more than £100. Thank you to those that have already donated, please donate HERE towards this worthy cause as we celebrate this year’s value of intellect.

This Week

On Thursday we gathered together as a whole school community – Prep School and Senior School – to celebrate the Solemnity of St Peter and St Paul. It was wonderful to also be able to invite many parishioners who joined us for Mass as well, of course, as Fr Stephen who celebrated Mass with us.

This great feast day celebrates two of the great heroes of the early Church. It is interesting to consider how different they each are.

St Peter is remembered as one of Jesus’ greatest followers during his earthly ministry. From a humble fisherman, he was chosen by Jesus to be leader of the twelve Apostles, those individuals who represented the new tribes of Israel and who were specifically commissioned and sent out to continue Jesus’ work. Simon, who was renamed Peter, was impetuous and could always be relied upon to speak first and think later. However, this served him well in the incident that we heard about in our Gospel, when he is the first to declare openly that Jesus is indeed the long-awaited Messiah, the Christ, the Son of the living God. His ministry was to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, which put him in conflict with Saul, or Paul as we know him.

If Peter came to decisions quickly, Paul took much longer, perhaps because his conversion was so profound. He began as a devout Pharisee who opposed the early Christians with such vigour that the early followers of Christ lived in fear of him. His conversion began with a great epiphany on the road to Damascus. He was blinded (surely a symbolic indication of his total lack of faith) before finally not just converting to the faith he had previously persecuted, but also becoming its boldest, most courageous evangelist. His mission was to the gentiles, those who followed the plethora of pagan religions across the Roman empire, and, with staggering success, brought a countless number to faith.

Despite being so very different (God calls every type of person!) they both shared a deep desire to follow Jesus’ command and to preach the Gospel to all people and, we, perhaps, are proof of their success as we, two thousand years later, along with over 2 billion others, declare the faith that Peter and Paul shared with our ancestors.

A saint is not a perfect person. Instead, it is someone who recognises that they have been called, and, despite their failures and difficulties, remain faithful to that call. Perhaps as we celebrate this great day, we can reflect on how God is calling us, and how we can respond.

If your daughter will not be riding next week due to activities, holidays or any other reason, then please let the office know by phone or by email. As if you wish to cancel a lesson, we do require 48hrs notice or more in order to offer credit.

Although it feels like a long way off, we have started to have a look at planning for next term’s timetable. For those who are not continuing with riding from September, please let the office know sooner rather than later. Once we have organised all of our current riders and their requests to time changes for next term, then we will be contacting those on our waitlist to fill the remaining spaces. Please do get in touch if you have any queries or would like your child/ren’s name added to the waitlist.
