BOARDING NEWS

On Saturday we went to visit Windsor Castle and Chapel. The state rooms were amazing with the over-the-top chandeliers and gold rooms; we came away with some ideas for redecorating our common rooms!

The girls were very excited to visit the final resting place of Queen Elizabeth II.We stood in line to file past the alcove in which she was buried alongside Prince Phillip, and all agreed we felt as if we were witnessing a part of history.

The best part of the trip, however, was getting a close-up view of the changing of the guards. We watched as their uniform was carefully inspected (staff picked up some tips) and one guard moved into position, sending the other guard off duty. It was then back to modern life and a trip into the town before heading back to school.

On Sunday we all enjoyed cooking, playing netball and making dance routines!

Next weekend is our last before half term and we are looking forward to going to Thorpe

SIXTH FORM NEWS

This week was another busy week in the Sixth Form! On Monday lunchtime the Sixth Form Events Committee had their first meeting of this Term; we welcomed our new Year 12 members, Pia and Neve, and discussed the exciting Halloween and Christmas events that will be coming up in the Sixth Form.

On Wednesday, the A Level Art & Design students enjoyed a trip to the Natural History Museum, capturing many photos of the vast array of interesting forms on display, which ranged from crystals and stones to fossils and skeletons of extinct animals. The trip served as a great opportunity to get more photographic references for our practical work and personal studies. Klara – Year 13

After registration on Thursday morning, we invited the Year 6 girls from the Prep School up to the Sixth Form to have breakfast with the Years 12 and 13 students. I would like to say a huge Thank You to Charlotte (our Prep School Prefect) for organising such a fantastic treat. The Year 6s were divided into groups with Sixth Formers whilst enjoying their delicious pastries. The Year 6s were interested in what life is like in the Senior School, preparing for their next move into Year 7. The Sixth Form enjoyed chatting to the Year 6 students and it was a pleasure to host them for breakfast.

Student Representatives for Effingham Schools Trust Student Council met for their Autumn Term meeting in the Boardroom to discuss the further events for St T’s and Cranmore to do together. This meeting was chaired by our Senior Prefect: Effingham Schools Trust Partnership Niki, with Pippa and me co chairing. After being awarded my role the week prior, I was excited to attend my first meeting and better my knowledge of the partnership events that are planned. Everyone was eager to discuss a potential cross-linked Floreat project where St Teresa’s and Cranmore students are encouraged to collaborate on specific topics fuelled by their interests. This was initially a popular idea and sparked curiosity about how the groups would be allocated; we discussed that we must ensure that both Cranmore and St Teresa’s pupils actively participate in the project. To guarantee this, the EST student council suggested that groups should be split between both schools with an even boy to girl ratio. This would allow both leadership and teamwork skills to develop for all the students involved, with groups able to assign different jobs to each pupil. One of the Year 7 representatives proposed a ‘Fun Mud Run’, which would test the resilience of both sets of students and allow some friendly competition. Allowing students to compete in a friendly environment where they win due to their own tenacity again forms more positive correlations with St Teresa’s and Cranmore, further entrenching the partnership between both schools. Hopefully, with the kind help of FOST and Cranmore, we can organise some exciting events over the course of this year, events that importantly, motivate and stimulate the students who participate.

The Sixth Form Coffee van came again on Friday where we enjoyed a range of treats, from hot chocolate to lemon swirl buns. During PSHCE the whole of the Sixth Form enjoyed a talk from Ms Marsden regarding Current Affairs. It was really interesting and was the first session to prepare for us to meet an MP next half term which we are all looking forward to doing.

RECENT ARTWORK

Sketchbook work carried out by upper school Fine Art, Photography and Textiles students. They have been drawing inspiration from a variety of different sources and created a unique body of artwork.

CCF

On Thursday 6th October the current cadets invited parents and pupils who are thinking of joining to a talk about the activities they carry out and to see an example of a drill and parade.

EVENING

LONDON ZOO BIOLOGY TRIP

This Thursday the Sixth form Biologists were lucky enough to get to visit the ZSL London Zoo with the Year 9 students as part of Biology week. We had a wonderful day and got to see lots of fascinating animals. One of my favourites was the Pygmy Hippo which is basically a smaller Hippo! It was an educational day and the Year 13’s got to apply their knowledge on conservation while the Year 12’s were able to get a flavour of what they are going to learn later this year! It was definitely worth the visit!

Natural History Museum Art Trip

The Natural History Museum, A level Art visit was a wonderful opportunity to observe unique and curious pieces of history. The moment we drew close to the building the cameras were out, capturing pictures of the stunning architecture, especially the large, delicately carved columns found at the entrance of the museum. As soon as we walked into the entrance the famous whale loomed over us.

As a group we were able to see the remarkable Dippy, also known as the nation’s favourite dinosaur. We were then able to explore the museum. This included: the dinosaurs, mammals, fossils, minerals, jewels, and my particular favourite, the dodo! We were tasked with taking over 100 photos, 2 detailed observational studies, and, as many continuous line drawings as we could muster.

(Charlotte R, A-level Fine Art student, Art Captain)

The Textiles students enjoyed studying a wide variety of artefacts on display. The exhibited objects such as coral, skeletons and taxidermy animals, where a great source of inspiration that we can later use in the classroom. Everyone had a fun filled day!

(Leah G, A-level Textiles student)

As a Photography student, the Museum was beneficial in taking a variety of photographs. From large scale architecture to minimal objects, capturing the details and working with the lighting. I'm sure all of us are looking forward to adding this new inspiration into our work!

PSHCE NEWS

Last Friday, Wildlife Aid Foundation visited the school to give a talk to Year 8 in their PSHCE lesson. Year 8 learnt about the charity's dedication to rescuing and rehabilitating animals. They also learnt about the wildlife in the local area, how to protect our environment and sustainability.

A police officer from Guildford spoke to our Sixth Form in their PSHCE lesson. She answered all of their questions about crime, arrests, abuse, and the demanding job of a police officer. We look forward to having her back for the other year groups.

MEDSOC TALK

This Tuesday lunchtime we were fortunate enough to welcome Dr Anna-Maria Rollin MBE to talk to us about her journey to becoming a NHS consultant anaesthetist. It was fascinating to hear her experiences in medicine including what is was like for her being one of only 6 women at her medical school! She talked about her exciting life including the various challenges she faced as well as rewarding experiences. There were lots of questions at the end for her to answer! It was truly an inspiring talk and we would love to have her back again!

BUSINESS PIT MARKET

Today, our Year 12 Business students conducted a bargaining experiment activity called the ‘Business Pit Market’, where they were bargaining down in their role either as a buyer or seller and had to negotiate a price, for a quantity supplied that all parties were happy to complete a deal on. As you can imagine, negotiations got quite heated which was hilarious, with sellers complaining that their production costs and taxes were increasing and so they refused to bring their prices down, whilst buyers were complaining that they could not afford any more than they had in their pockets and so it was either a deal or no deal situation. The girls considered this a great way of learning about the Equilibrium market clearing price and supply graph, that features in both A level Business and Economics.

MUSIC

Our Upper School soloists' recital in the Chapel was a great success. Many musicians performed a variety of pieces on their solo instruments, from Schubert to Kern to Hart. All girls were asked to think about the piece they were playing, and write their own programme notes to accompany their performances. It was a fantastic end to the day. We are grateful to our audience for coming along and supporting the girls.

What we've been up to:

Our Years 10 and 11 musicians have been performing their solo pieces to each other in lesson time to prepare for their GCSE performances. Year 11 musicians have been working hard on their minimalism compositions, and Year 10 have been composing to a brief, using specific note and rhythmic patterns. Year 12 have been composing in classical and renaissance styles.

Make sure you check the extra-curricular activities timetable and join a club!

We hope that you are all staying warm and dry! The staff will start to clip the ponies’ coats next week so they will look very tidy and smart but will start to feel the chill!

As the weather is so variable at the moment, please make sure that you come with a jumper (no hoodies!) and/or a coat to wear when it’s chilly out. As we are on top of a hill, we get a bit of a cold wind when riding in the arena!

A reminder that if you wish to cancel a lesson, we do require 48hrs notice or more in order to offer credit. Any later and we are unable to fill the slot with a rider for a catch up lesson or off the waitlist.

Last weekend, riders went to two NSEA competitions for jumping and dressage at Felbridge and did really well! Results are below!

The STE ponies moved fields and were very happy to get new grass. The ponies also had the farrier round to have new shoes after Roxy lost a shoe! As half term is coming up there are Pony Days where you get to tack up, groom, ride and learn LOADS about horses! There are bookings available so go to the STE website and sign up while you can!

The horse of the week is… Wizard!

This Week

It was an absolute joy to celebrate our annual St Francis Blessing Service this week. We were pleased to welcome a wide selection of much loved pets and other animals to the school site. We gave thanks for all the happiness and affection that we share, and we also took the opportunity to give thanks to God for all the blessings that we receive through our pets and the animals of our world.

Following the example of both St Francis and our own St Thérèse we recalled that it is often the little things that make a difference. In particular we thought about the bees who fulfil an essential role, particularly in the production of food. In short, most of us would go hungry if it were not for the bees who pollinate the crops we rely on. Yet bees are under significant threat. Their habitats are being destroyed, pesticides are killing them in unprecedented numbers and we all live with the threat that our food supply will be damaged or even destroyed unless we act.

In this Season of Creation, we are encouraged to give thanks for the beauty of creation, but also to reflect on our God given responsibility to be stewards of the gifts that we have received so that we can say, with St Francis, ‘Praise be to God in all your creatures!’
