26 FEBRUARY 2024
Message from the Head of Prep
Although we have just experienced one incredibly wet February, it did not dampen the spirits of the children as they enjoyed a range of events this week. Reception went to Painshill Park and had a close encounter with the Big Bad Wolf but managed to escape! Year 1 visited Manor House and explored their Forest School while having a lot of fun playing games and drinking hot chocolate. Year 6 loved their day trip, putting some of what they have learnt in Geography into practice with some navigating, fire making, den building and survival skills.
On Friday evening, Cranmore achieved success over Downsend in the pool and on Wednesday our U10s took part in the UKSA Hockey Tournament where they were undefeated through the five pool games but unfortunately went out in the semi-finals.
Today we have been delighted to welcome the electric quartet Stringfever to lead music workshops with the children and there is great excitement about their performance this evening.
Starting on Monday, we celebrate Book Week with author visits, a book fair and a range of other competitions and activities throughout the school. All of Prep are invited to dress up on Friday or bring in three props to represent their favourite book characters.
Happy St David’s Day!
Year 6 Outdoor Adventure Day
Year 6 braved the elements on Thursday to have a thoroughly enjoyable day taking part in activities such as: roasting marshmallows; building dens; orienteering; foraging for wild garlic; and charming several members of the public (half a dozen heartfelt compliments on the boys’ manners were passed on to the accompanying staff!). We returned damp but smiling and smelling of campfires and garlic. Well done, Year 6!
Year 1 Visit to Manor House
Year 1 pupils had a great day at Manor House on Wednesday. We visited their Forest School and explored their great site. We played lots of fun games and enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate or hot Ribena! Thank you so much to Manor House for having us!

Upper Prep School Council
At our Upper Prep School Council meeting this week, the reps reviewed the actions from our last meeting and shared suggestions which they had brought along from their forms. They were then asked to consider what we can do to help others and, with this in mind, they are going to gather ideas for a fundraising event from their classmates and bring these to our next meeting. Watch this space!
Mrs Spooner
Year 2 pupils loved designing and making their own explorer ships using a range of materials. They made the hulls of the ships out of clay. All the children had specific roles and were learning to work as part of a team. They were proud of what they could achieve by working together!

Music News
On Monday morning, the Lower Prep pupils were lucky enough to hear Harriet W in 2NS perform 'Let Us Chase the Squirrel' on the violin. She played with confidence and musicality, and her intonation was pitch perfect. You could definitely imagine a squirrel running, thanks to her interpretation of the music.
Well done Harriet!
Mrs Thornton
Nursery News
Spring has sprung in the Nursery this week! The children have been involved in activities relating to our topic of Spring. They were able to develop their ICT skills by creating their own Spring flowers on the interactive whiteboard.
They have enjoyed learning about St. David’s Day and Mrs Chan explained all the different elements of a daffodil and how the children could look at various pictures of daffodils and use the pastels for their observational drawings. We have also been learning all about being healthy and looking after our bodies. In Science the children talked all about the importance of keeping our teeth clean and the correct way to brush them!

Reception had a fantastic trip this week to Painshill Park. The children were immersed in various fairy tales and were thoroughly entertained by the group leader, Adam. They role-played making gingerbread men, they built houses to deter the Big Bad Wolf and explored the beautiful grounds of Painshill looking for Grandma's house and of course ran away from the Big Bad Wolf. Well done, Reception. It was another fantastic trip!

Come and See Afternoon for Years 2 and 3
Parents of pupils in Years 2 and 3 were invited in on Thursday last week to come and see their children’s work. It was a lovely opportunity for our pupils to showcase all their hard work and progress from the start of the academic year. They also enjoyed showing off their beautiful classrooms. Thank you to all those who came to join us for the afternoon.

Sport Update
Across the week, we have played hockey matches against Cranleigh, Danes Hill, Feltonfleet and RGS Prep. On Wednesday, our U10A team played in the UKSA hockey tournament which took place at The Triangle Sports Centre, Burgess Hill. The team went undefeated in the pool playing 5 matches, but unfortunately were knocked out in the semi-final, 0-2.
Last Friday, Downsend hosted Cranmore in a swimming gala from age groups U9s to U15s. It was close to the end, but Cranmore eventually won by 5 points.
With Year 6 having a choice to do multi-sports instead of playing hockey, this week's lessons involved a variety of sports, athletic development and team challenges. The latter was a rowing challenge to cover 3000m as a team. The pupils tried exceptionally hard and supported each other admirably.
U15 Reed's 7 Winners!
Last Sunday, our U15s attended the inaugural Reeds 7s tournament. This was the first 7s event for Cranmore this year. The team played superbly well against some very strong teams, including St. John's (28 - 10), Reed's (29-12) and Epsom College (36-33). A combination of a resilient defence and a potent attack meant that Cranmore was unbeaten and was crowned the eventual winner. Well done to all involved; we are extremely proud!
Sport Update
Senior Rowing
This week Cranmore's rowing programme took the Year 9 and 10 rowers to an indoor rowing tank as an alternative form of training. All the boys had a great time experiencing the facility and equipment at Molesey Boat Club. Rowing tanks are a great coaching tool. These sessions allowed the boys to receive many individual and group feedback pointers in a very advantageous environment. We look forward to seeing how the boys progress through the spring in time for the local regattas in the summer.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team
Reflection
This week we hear about how important Lent is.
Before Jesus began His great public ministry, He spent forty days fasting and praying in the desert. We read the gospel at the beginning of Lent to remind us to prepare our hearts for the great season of Easter at the end of approximately forty days.
"Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you." ~ Saint Augustine
Lent is a time of renewal, repentance and revival. A time to re-center ourselves on the great love of God and to reorder our lives back into His holy will.
Prayer
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
Amen
St Andrew …Pray for us.
St Maximilian Kolbe Pray for us.
Lent
Adoration
Every Wednesday
8am to 8.25am
This is an invitation to come to the chapel to be in Jesus’ presence on Wednesday morning
This is a time of silent prayer and to be in Jesus’ presence
Parents are asked to meet us in Reception at 7.55am
When we face the sun we get a tan… but when we stand before Jesus in the Eucharist we become saints.
Blessed Carlo Acutis
